Heartfelt reunion on Valentine’s

SOME of the Redcliffe peninsula’s youngest and oldest residents were reunited for Valentine’s Day as the members of an intergenerational playgroup met up again after almost 12 months apart.

With visits resuming to Ozcare at Clontarf, a small group of children from Sesame Lane Care and Kindergarten hand-delivered Valentine’s Day cards to seniors as part of an exchange art project aimed at recon-

necting the young and old.

“It is just a magical moment to be able to have our little visitors from the intergenerational playgroup, which had to be put on hold when the pandemic was declared in March last year,” Ozcare’s Diversional Therapist Annamarie Garrood said.

Among the seniors in the card swap was one of Queensland’s oldest WWII veterans, Arnie Nunn, who will be celebrating his 97th birthday this year – and 76

years since the Armistice was declared in 1945.

Ms Garrood said the joy of seeing the children again was a highlight for the residents of Ozcare’s Ozanam Villa Clontarf Aged Care Facility after connections were kept alive last year through an art exchange project.

Throughout 2020, the children created art for the seniors. At the same time, the seniors worked on crafts, including handmade dolls’ clothing, which were deliv-

ered to the childcare centre and used during homeroom play. Sesame Lane Director Therese Thomsen said the children also exchanged cuttings, from the kindy garden.

“The children are very excited to see their friends in the aged care facility again – the program is a part of the kindy curriculum and being with older people really does bring about a very authentic experience for both,” she said.

Massive year of events STORY KYLIE KNIGHT EVENTS are making a return to the Moreton Bay Region in a move that is tipped to give the local economy a much-needed boost and bring smiles to the faces of locals and visitors.

In this edition of Dolphins News, Moreton Bay Region Industry and Tourism (MBRIT) is launching the 2021 events calendar, showcasing major events, which will be staged across the region. These include favourites such as Redcliffe KiteFest, Tastes of Moreton Bay, Moreton Bay Food and Wine Festival, Park Vibes, Jetty 2 Jetty, Caboolture Festival, Redcliffe Festival of Sails, Hills Carnivale, Moreton Kids Festival, local shows and Abbey Medieval Festival.

It all starts with Park Vibes on March 20 at Pine Rivers Park (turn to page 19 for details), which is quickly followed by Redcliffe Festival of Sails on Good Friday, April 2.

Chairman Shane Newcombe said he was excited to see this year’s calendar, packed with events that would draw visitors to the region, boost the local economy and bring locals together.

“After a tough y e a r during which m a n y events were cancelled, due to COVID-19, we are thrilled to release our full calendar of events for 2021,” Mr Newcombe said.

“Our team has already been working closely with Queensland Health to

deliver C OV I D - S a f e events including Christmas carols, Australia Day and Lunar New Year. In many respects,

Foodies’ favourites on the move

TASTES of Moreton Bay – a month-long celebration of local produce and cuisine – is back in 2021 along with the Moreton Bay Food and Wine Festival.

The signature festival will be held on July 30, 31 and August 1 to coincide with the start of Tastes of Moreton Bay, which runs from August 1

to September 19 across the region. The program for both events will be released closer to the time, but the region’s own celebrity chef Alastair McLeod will be part of the action.

This year’s Moreton Bay Food and Wine Festival will be held at Apex Park, on the waterfront, at Woody Point. The new location will enable organisers to make it a COVID-Safe event, adhering to State Government guidelines,

with measures for contact tracing and plenty of space for social distancing.

MBRIT Chairman Shane Newcombe is calling on producers, cafes, restaurants and food vendors to be part of the festival and the Tastes of Moreton Bay program.

“Tastes of Moreton Bay is the chance for local tastemakers and foodies to come together. Venues and producers will be hosting culinary events and masterclasses and offering spe-

cial menus, creating a food trail across the region,” Mr Newcombe said.

Market stalls, cooking demonstrations, speaking events and more will give vendors and venues the opportunity to be part of the Moreton Bay Food and Wine Festival.

gion deserved to be recognised as a food bowl for South East Queensland.

Like other media outlets, our team was blindsided

by Facebook’s decision to restrict the posting of news links and all posts from news pages in Australia last Thursday.

Facebook is in a stand-off with the Federal Government over plans to introduce legislation that forces

tech giants to pay Australian news sites for content and says being asked to pay is unfair, because media outlets benefit more from using Facebook than the company does from sharing their news. The legislation has bipartisan support and was passed in the House of Representatives last week, but must still be passed by the Senate before it comes into effect.

“People outside of Australia also cannot view or share Australian news content or content from

Australian news Pages on Facebook,” a statement from Facebook said.

“This is not the outcome we wanted and it’s a step we take reluctantly. The proposed law fundamentally misunderstands the relationship between our platform and publishers who use it to share news content.”

But Federal Communications Minister Paul Fletcher said Facebook should think carefully about what the decision meant for its reputation.

Rallying call to clean up MONIQUE Betty and Louise Read are hoping to make a big difference at Scarborough Beach by beating the heat.

The sisters have put out an open invitation to join them to help Clean Up Australia from 6-7.30am (earlier than many sites) on Sunday, March 7.

Using their own network, six families (14 people) accepted and more than $670 had been donated at the time of going to press.

More of both are welcome.

Monique was “born and bred” in Redcliffe, which she calls “paradise”, and often walks along the waterfront at Scarborough.

“I’ve often done the clean up and wanted to give a bit more back to it,” said the mother of three, “we picked the very early start to try and beat the heat.

Region’s delights drive property sales STORY JODIE POWELL THE real estate market across the Redcliffe peninsula and beyond is booming according to Waterfront Properties principal Kevin Bostock.

Mr Bostock said local agents were seeing strong activity across the market − from sales to rental properties − and private sales remained more popular than auctions.

He said the boom was driven by the number of buyers outstripping the number of available properties.

“This month is always a slow month for listings and when more come on the market, it will ease.

“The sky’s the limit for vendors – it’s a sellers’ market, a lot of them are ending up with a lot more than the asking price,” Mr Bostock said.

He attributed the flurry of activity in part to the COVID-19 pandemic, and said the resulting drop in interest rates was a contributing factor.

“It didn’t start until August, early September – it was a gradual thing, but just before Christmas was

the real eye-opener and we started to get more than the asking price, with multiple offers.

“It’s just progressed from there – we’re getting up to 70 groups through a first open-house.

“Interest rates went down, so affordability was

IT’S fair to say quite a lot has changed since Andy White joined the fire service in NSW on Valentine’s Day 1986.

Back then, the job revolved around fighting fires, but now the Senior Fire Fighter from Kippa-Ring station spends about two thirds of his time attending traffic accidents.

“Initially we were just firefighters, but because of advancements we have become an emergency services force,” Mr White explained.

“Sixty-five percent of our business is road crash rescue.”

It’s an area of work close to Mr White’s heart – when one of his sons was a young teen he was knocked off his bike on Griffith Rd as he was cycling home from school at Southern Cross Catholic College.

“He was in a coma for two

“When it happened, I was at home.

“One of my other son’s mates and his mum had driven past the crash and came to tell us.

“It wasn’t until a day or so later when the doctor said he was going to be OK that it hit me − the hardest thing with our job is that we can relate it to our personal lives.”

Mr White said his son

didn’t want to go back to school, but with support from the college he initially returned a day or two a week.

“He ended up getting an OP 7 and getting a teaching degree.”

Mr White has spent the past decade involved in the Queensland Fire and Emergency Service Road Action Planning Program for Year 11 students.

The program educates students about their responsibilities as motorists and highlights the risks associated with driving.

“The 17 to 24-year-old demographic is the most atrisk on the road,” Mr White said.

“We give a 70-80 minute video presentation to make them more aware of their responsibilities and the consequences.

“We try to encourage them to be more responsible and more aware of themselves and other people on the road.”

When he’s not in the field, Mr White enjoys recreational paddling, having retired from competing at an elite level in outrigger dragon boat racing.

“I represented Australia twice and won international gold medals,” he said.

“I competed in the world titles at club level in Italy, Hong Kong, Macau and Adelaide and in Canada and China with the national side.”

Mr White said he was attracted to the fire service because of the hours – two day shifts, followed by two night shifts and then four days off – but found the opportunity to be involved in the community extremely rewarding.

“It’s a community thing – I like being involved in the community.

“It’s knowing that you’re going there to help other people in a situation they have lost control of, knowing that you have done your best to help other people.”

Barge bid moves ahead A PROPOSAL to establish a pedestrian and vehicle barge service from the Redcliffe peninsula to Moreton Island (Mulgumpin) is setting sail.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said plans for the Moreton Island (Mulgumpin) Barge Development Opportunity project had progressed after a successful expression of interest (EOI) process.

“Late last year, we sought

expressions of interest from proponents with demonstrated experience in developing, owning and operating a commercial barge service,” Mr Bailey said.

“Proponents also needed to be willing to establish a new service from the Redcliffe peninsula to Moreton Island (Mulgumpin). Following an EOI invitation, we have successfully identified and shortlisted proposals.

“A second stage invitation to offer along with workshops with proponents are now underway to clarify financial and technical feasibility and proposed mainland barge landing sites.

“Dependent on these outcomes, we will then conduct a detailed evaluation before making a decision.”

State Member for Redcliffe Yvette D’Ath said renewed commercial interest in the proposal was great news for local business and

tourism operators.

“A new barge at the Redcliffe peninsula will offer alternative and increased travel services to Moreton Island, and drive more visitors and tourists to the region,” Mrs D’Ath said.

“Boosting travel to these stunning Queensland destinations, means we have new opportunities to drive tourism, increase employment and rebuild local economies.

“This is all about helping

this region recover while developing a new, commercially reliable and regular barge service to Moreton Island from our northern suburbs.

“The Palaszczuk Government backs the barge and has committed up to $4 million towards completing this project with the successful proponent.”

More than 100 jobs at The Komo MORE than 100 new jobs are on offer at one of Redcliffe’s largest entertainment venues.

With The Komo Hotel due to reopen after extensive renovations in March, the venue is looking for staff across a range of positions.

The hotel, bought by the Lewis Land Group in September, is undergoing a $3 million transformation.

Lewis Leisure Queensland Regional Manager Chris Allison said the focus of the revamped venue would be on delivering quality food with great service.

Federal Member for Petrie Luke Howarth said the much-needed track would receive $1.5 million in federal funding and he hoped work would start this financial year, subject to council approvals.

Mayor Peter Flannery said recent heavy rain and localised flooding had seeped into the administration hub at the back of the building, which made it unsafe for staff.

“An engineering assessment revealed that the retaining wall between the trotting oval and rear of the Redcliffe Neighbourhood Centre was taking on water and leaking into the building,” Mayor Flannery said. “(Council’s) unanimous vote means we can action these urgent works immediately. The $270,000 tender has been awarded to a local firm, Kimini Constructions, a company that prides itself on employing and contracting locally-based carpentry contractors and has trained several local apprentices.”

Record-breaking effort for cancer A BAREFOOT bowls event to raise money for brain cancer research in memory of Lincoln Powell has generated a record amount.

Since the first Lincoln’s Day in 2017, the event had raised more than $24,000, all of which has been donated to the QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute.

Lincoln was 43 when a brain tumour claimed his life in 2016 and since 2017 his beloved Bramble Bay Bowls Club has hosted an event to raise money for brain cancer research at the QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute, building on fundraising efforts that started after he was diagnosed.

Lincoln’s mum, Wendy, said this year’s event, at the Bramble Bay Bowls Club on Valentine’s Day, raised $7107.80.

“It’s about $1000 more than last year and we want to thank the community for their support,” Mrs Powell said.

“People were coming and going all day and we saw a lot of different people, as well as those who usually come to the event.”

Neighbourhood Centre provided essential support services to the community.

“This facility is located within the showgrounds precinct and is used by an array of important local organisations, so we’ve worked with Kimini Constructions to ensure there will be minimal disruption,” he said.

The Lab Network, which has Labs at North Lakes and Caboolture, is looking for people to share their professional and vocation skills in areas such as coding, social gaming, digital designs and video

The Lab started in Melbourne’s west in 2010 and has grown into a national network which is expected to exceed 40 local Labs this year.

DECEPTION Bay breast cancer survivor Marissa Taylor owes a debt of gratitude to breast cancer charity Chicks in Pink – and it’s one she will repay by taking part in the International Women’s Day Fun Run. Ms Taylor is a Chicks in Pink International Women’s Day Fun Run ambassador and has secured the Number 1 race bib.

She will do the 5km walk with family and friends and aims to raise more than $3000 to help Chicks In Pink continue to provide services and support to women undergoing treatment for breast cancer.

Diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 38, Ms Taylor thought breast cancer was something older women got.

She’s forever grateful for a playful wrestling match with her daughter, Ruby, in July 2018.

“Ruby bumped me in the breast – she was six – we were wrestling on the ground.

“I wasn’t inspecting my breasts because I was only 38.”

The mother of two’s public album on Facebook chronicles her journey – from the day she wore a bright pink tutu into battle for her first round of war against breast cancer when she started chemotherapy, through to fundraisers for Chicks In Pink.

She said she was grateful for the charity’s support – especially after they supplied her with a special bra after her mastectomy went wrong.

“I went in for a double mastectomy and woke up with a tube down my throat and one breast still on because I had an anaphylactic reaction – I was horrified because I had thrown out all my bras,” Ms Taylor laughed.

“I spent 16 weeks lopsided (until her allergy to the ketamine in the anaesthetic was identified and the second surgery complete).”

Ms Taylor urged people to donate to her Fun Run fundraiser.

“Just $25 will pay for parking when someone has to visit hospital for treatment or a check-up – it’s those things that add up,” she said.

Instead, she was fitted with a portable catheter in the week of her 39th birthday – which she marked by shaving off her waistlength hair.

NICOLE Yeates’ survival after a shocking motorcycle accident that left her with a traumatic brain injury at the age of 16 is the tale of a series of coincidences, minor miracles and sheer determination.

Riding to play basketball on a rainy night on June 19, 1987, Ms Yeates was struck by a car as she crossed through a roundabout in Christchurch, New Zealand. “The car didn’t see me,” she said.

“The lights went out on the bike as I approached the roundabout − my plan was to get to the other side and then stop. I was dragged 200m and the bike was still attached to the bumper bar.

“He was an unlicenced man in his 20s – he got 200 hours of community work and a $60 fine.”

Ms Yeates recalls nothing of the accident and its aftermath – she still has partial amnesia as a result of her head injuries.

But her mum has filled in the gaps. On the night of the crash she died three times, her mother was asked to sign organ donor forms and the doctors of-

fered no hope.

“I was left in the middle of the road for dead – as luck would have it, I was found by a nurse who worked in the spinal unit in Christchurch and he had oxygen in his car. He thought I was just a jacket on the road when he found me.

“He resuscitated me while we waited for the ambulance, which got there 30 minutes later.”

When Ms Yeates woke after three weeks in a deep coma, specialists said she would never walk, finish school or find anything other than menial employment.

Instead, the Woody Point resident defied their predictions and with courage, and sheer hard work, she not only walked, but completed school, trained as a beauty therapist and later built a successful career as a rehabilitation counsellor.

“I wrote to the doctor when I got my degree – a Bachelor of Human Services with a major in Rehabilitation Counselling.”

This year, she published a book about her experiences – Holding onto Hope: Finding the ‘New You’ after a Traumatic Brain Injury − which has reached number one on Amazon.

“It’s a memoir/self-help autobiographical book with an allied health professional hat on,” Ms Yeates said.

“Before I started writing, I researched comprehensively − there’s a lot of hard luck stories for hard luck’s sake. The other realm was highly religious-focused.

“There was not really anything out there that was ‘a terrible thing has happened and here’s some steps to help’.”

When Ms Yeates began her healing journey, experts believed the possibility of recovery had a limited timeframe.

“They know now that with neuroplasticity you can regrow at any age. The doctors didn’t know back then and we were told it’s two years and that’s the end of recovery,” she said.

“Fifteen years later my brain was still improving.”

Ms Yeates attributes her recovery to a combination of factors. “They didn’t take into account my support system and that I am stubborn,” she said.

Having spent years concealing the challenges she faces as a result of her injury, Ms Yeates is determined to use her experience to give hope to others.

A NEW haircutting service offering cuts for $2 has opened at Redcliffe.

The brainchild of Tracey Brown, Gold Coin Cuts sits within the Gold Coin OpShop on Sutton St. Ms Brown, who founded the Gold Coin Heroes Foundation, said that last year she spent $500 raised through the op shop paying for people doing it tough to have their hair cut at local salons.

This year, she opened her own service, paying local mobile hairdressers to occupy a chair within the shop a day a week offering $2 cuts to patrons.

“I rang every mobile hairdresser in the area and asked them for one day a week to cut as many people’s hair as they can,” Ms Brown said.

In the first week of opening, 46 people were treated to a trim.

The hairdressing area, staffed by insured and trained hairdressers, has three chairs available.

Ms Brown said she hoped more hairdressers would be willing to join the service.

She said she believed it would not take custom from other hairdressers because many of the people who used it could not afford to visit a traditional salon.

People are loving it The service offers trims, but does not provide full-service blow-drying, colouring or restyling.

Diane Shepherd, who works with Ms Brown, said the concept was about providing dignity for people who otherwise could not afford to have their hair cut.

“People can come in to get a trim for a job interview – to tidy up and feel good about themselves,” Ms Shepherd said.

“People are loving it.”

Money raised is channelled back into the community, with the Gold Coin Op-Shop also home to $2 coffees, teas and hot chocolate made by baristas.

It offers free loaves of bread donated by Woolworths at Margate and Redcliffe, as well as free hygiene products such as sanitary products for women and continence pants.

Ms Brown said the Op Shop offered everything for $2 so as many people as possible could afford it.

REDCLIFFE Meals on Wheels recently welcomed highly acclaimed chef David Clem to its ranks.

Mr Clem brings a wealth of culinary and catering experience to the role having previously been Executive Chef at Perth Arena, Chef of the Year 2014 Perth and currently vice president of the prestigious Academe de France Australia.

In recent years, he returned to Brisbane and held the position of Head Chef at the Wesley Mission, John Wesley Gardens.

Mr Clem said he was keen to apply his varied skills and experience to Redcliffe Meals on Wheels’ vital community service, which provides a wide range of nutritious meals directly to clients’ homes.

It is a service, that has been operating on the Redcliffe peninsula since 1967 and providing much more than a meal.

Menus are changed every season and each season has different menus each week.

Meals on Wheels is not means tested and is available to customers and their carers at a small cost.

New drop-off zone to open DROPPING-off and picking-up students at Mango Hill State School will soon be easier.

A second drop zone, on the opposite side of the fast-growing school, may be finished this week and could be open for use within days. It will operate from the Mallard St entrance to the school grounds and use a similar system to the main Bonnet Pde drop-offzone.

The new zone will have a pull-in lane with four bays, a fence along the front, and waiting students will be seated. A staff member will be present to call out names as their ‘lift’ arrives.

Cars will then continue up the road, turn around and leave again along Mallard St. Principal Tracy Egan said: “This is a really good news story for our community. It’s about providing another option to help parents and disperse traffic.

“If we can make the process streamlined between here and particularly the high school, that will help.

Mango Hill State School, the largest primary school in Queensland, has grown from 200 students to 1500 since it opened in 2012.

That has put increasing pressure on the Bonnet Pde drop zone, however the school is also working with bus services and on active Main pick-up collection point looking back towards Mallard St. travel options.

Ms Egan said additional bike racks were being built near the Bonnet Pde drop zone and would be ready soon. “It will double the capacity of our bike racks and scooters, encouraging active travel for those living locally,” she said.

“With active travel, bus services, pick-up zones, bike racks we are trying to support the community and make sure kids get to school safely.”

Children blossom with change STORY KYLIE KNIGHT SESAME Lane Care and Kindergarten has opened a Montessori Children’s House at one of its North Lakes centres in a bid to encourage independent learning and thinking.

The 75-place ‘house’ runs alongside its play-based centre at Joyner Circuit and opened last month.

It is being overseen by Montessori educator and directoress Amber Riddell, and has already changed the way children and educators behave and learn.

The teaching method encourages educators to observe children’s learning styles before introducing activities and offers children choice.

“From a classroom perspective, instead of having activities out on the tables and things to attract the child, it’s more about having activities on the shelf and having the classroom set up so they can get a choice in what they would like to do,” Ms Riddell said.

“It’s a very calm environment, the adults are quite softly spoken when they’re in the classroom because

Relishing The Lakes ‘embrace’ STORY KYLIE KNIGHT THE Lakes College’s new principal is feeling the warm embrace of her school community as she settles in with an eye on taking the college from ‘adolescence to adulthood’.

Nicole Gregory started in the job about eight weeks ago, and has since enjoyed her official commissioning and meeting the broader school community during a series of special events.

“There is a thing here called The Lakes Embrace – it’s a COVID Safe version at the moment – but it is a true embrace. Say, you want to come here and we will welcome you with open arms and support you in your journey,” Mrs Gregory said. “I’m going to spend the better part of this year unpacking what that looks like.”

“This lady took a subject area that I was not even remotely interested in and made it into something that opened my world up. It was just the way she went

about creating a sense of curiosity and wonder in her classroom.”

That same curiosity and wonder is more essential than ever in modern classrooms, along with community partnerships and outof-the-box thinking.

“I am very much an advocate for … it’s not about preparing young people for the world they’re going to engage into, it’s actually about having a community of learning where young people are able to make a contribution to the world

they live in now,” she said.

In a practical sense, that means finding ways to develop more flexible timetabling, while honouring the Australian Curriculum and being entrepreneurial and innovative.

“It means leveraging partnerships, it means looking at a college environment and saying why is it that we have this magnificent facility that’s only open during the day, five days a week and what could we do with that down the track and how can our college

become something that’s shared with the community,” Mrs Gregory said.

“So, for me it’s really about growing the institution into a township on a hill with a bright light shining from it that draws people to it.

Mrs Gregory said she was keen to tackle all of this while helping the college continue to mature, and with a supportive husband and two adult daughters, she was perfectly positioned to devote her energy to the task.

Tributes have flowed for Shirley Sutherland, who died in January following a short illness.

FAMILY and friends have bid a sad farewell to Shirley Sutherland who died, following a short illness, on January 30.

Mrs Sutherland was born Shirley Houghton on November 17, 1933, to James and Emily Houghton. Her mother Emily was a member of the Corscadden family, who were early European settlers in Redcliffe moving to the area in 1894.

As a girl, Mrs Sutherland attended Scarborough State School and then St Margaret’s at Albion. She enjoyed singing and excelled in hockey and tennis. She was selected in the Queensland hockey squad, but it was at tennis (the old Dunbar Street Courts) where she met and fell in love with Bob Sutherland.

The couple often travelled to Bribie, while courting, on the SS Koopa and were married in 1955. They had two children, Allan and John. During their marriage, Bob was elected to Redcliffe City Council and served for nine years including as Deputy Mayor.

Mrs Sutherland’s brothers also served on Council, at various times, and son Allan was Mayor of Redcliffe City and then Moreton Bay Regional Council.

She was a member of many community organisations including the Committee for Kindergarten, Moreton Bay Boat Club Women’s Auxiliary and Meals on Wheels.

Mrs Sutherland loved cooking and spent a considerable amount of time assisting Rotary and Apex, even though women could not be members at that time, and she was always cooking for her church.

She was also a member of Probus and the Redcliffe Historical Society.

Until recently, Mrs Sutherland enjoyed reasonable health, but was diagnosed with cancer on January 13, 2021.

She leaves behind husband Bob, sons Allan and John and their wives Gayle and Sharon, and also five grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

STORY NICK CROCKFORD CHARLIE Fearnley admits he took “a gamble” just before Christmas − but it seems to be paying off.

With partner Lele Vaiotu, he opened Fearnleys Seafood at Scarborough selling Moreton Bay prawns, bugs, crabs and squid.

Straight from their trawler, Teresa, the catch is offloaded at Scarborough Harbour and sold two kilometres away at 611 Oxley Ave. The fresh, local seafood quickly became a hit and Mr Fearnley said he had already built up a loyal clientele.

“The people in the area are the nicest. It’s a great feeling seeing them backing me and keep coming back,” Mr Fearnley said.

“Their comments on Facebook and face-to-face are that they are so happy. I feel it is like one big family.

“I have set a cheaper price as we have effectively taken out the ‘middle man’. I was told to raise the prices at Christmas but this, to me, is wrong. It would hurt my local people.

“This is not about getting rich overnight, it’s about

keeping the public happy. My boat can keep up with what people want and they understand if I have to close the doors because of bad weather, but I just don’t want to mess up the word ‘fresh’.”

Mr Fearnley is from a fishing family, with 45 years experience, and has operated his trawler Tere-

sa from Scarborough for the past two years.

For much of his career Mr Fearnley has ‘prawned’, working 40 hours straight on many trips. However, he said he became increasingly disappointed that many prawns were being frozen for months on end and set out to get them “fresh to the public”.

THE Moreton Bay Symphony Orchestra will join forces with Queensland Musical Theatre and MBSO’s Julie McCoy for a journey into the world of musicals.

MBSO president Eve Brown said Curtains Up would feature musicians from MBSO’s Junior Strings, Youth Symphony and Open Adult orchestras.

“It’s a large logistical challenge given we have a limit of 55 people on stage because of COVID,” Ms Brown said.

The Junior Strings traditionally have up to 20 performers, the Youth Symphony 45 and the Open Adult 45 – and that’s not taking into account the need

Find performers ‘Anywhere’ in the region A NEW festival, offering a feast of entertainment, is headed to the Moreton Bay Region.

The ‘Anywhere Festival’ promotes the concept that performance arts should not be constrained by a theatre or limited to a stage, with performances instead hosted by local businesses and even in private homes.

Mayor Peter Flannery said a decision by Council to provide $20,000 in funding for the May festival to come to Moreton Bay for the first time was a great opportunity for local performers.

“This initiative is literally the perfect COVID solution by taking traditional storytelling out of theatre buildings and back to where life really takes place − in the community,” Mayor Flannery said.

“It means we can observe social distancing while providing dynamic and contemporary entertainment for locals and supporting artists, and inject some post-COVID vibrancy back into our communities.”

“I found the most fascinating exciting and fun performances weren’t happening in custommade spaces, rather they were happening in the nooks and crannies where performers could try new things and audiences could experience a more intimate and up-close performance,” Mr Osuch said.

and theatre but it is also about encouraging businesses to engage with their community in a new way.”

Mayor Flannery said it was important to provide artists with work opportunities.

“Performance, concerts, and theatre were all but obliterated

by COVID. This festival supports artists to create incredible work without all the financial burdens and overheads associated with presenting independently.”

The band tells me they plan to release an album in March 2021. I cannot wait for that. Live music events look like they are returning thick and fast for 2021.

A classic pasta that is as quick to make as it will be to finish when you’re devouring it! Tastes like Italy and is simple to create, with just a handful of ingredients.

Ingredients • 350g penne pasta • 350g boneless, skinless chicken breast • 200g jar of sundried tomatoes

6. Place the patties on a plate and refrigerate for 30 minutes.

7. Preheat the barbecue to high.

8. Place the patties directly on the grill and press down with the back of a spatula.

9. Reduce the head to medium and cook for five minutes. Turn, gently press down on each patty and allow them to cook for another five minutes.

10. When the patties are cooked through, remove from the barbecue, cover with foil, and set aside to rest for a few minutes..

11. Build your burgers with remaining spinach leaves and your choice of sauce.

12. Optional: add 60g of feta to the patty mix in step 2; and serve with Tzatziki sauce.

MANY gardeners may be preparing their vegie patches for winter planting, but there’s still plenty of options for those wanting to grow crops they can harvest before the temperature drops.

Peter Popenko from The Plant Shack at Deception Bay said some gardeners were still planting corn, salad vegetables and open-leaf lettuces including coz and mignonette lettuces.

These perform better than ‘hearting’ lettuces, such as iceberg, which do not stand up to the summer heat.

For poor soil, per square metre, spread 500g to 1000g organic fertiliser, 200g dolomite, 200g gypsum, 100g Epsom salts and thick of layer compost or manure, and mix through to a depth of 15cm.

Before planting, it is a good idea to cover the prepared soil with a layer of mulch − preferably sugar cane, 5-7cm deep.

Vegies will jump out of the ground If planting seedlings, dunk the punnet in a bucket of organic liquid fertiliser before planting.

After planting, water your seedlings but do not flood them.

Follow-up water with frequent light applications while the plant roots are superficial and slowly increase the amount of water and decrease the frequency as the plants grow.

Increase the frequency and the amount of water closer to harvesting because the plants will need it and the weather will be dry.

They will also need follow-up nutrition to thrive.

Mr Popenko’s other tips include: growing vegetables in winter, resting the garden bed in summer; mixing high potassium liquid fertiliser such as Flourish with organic liquid fertiliser for plants such as capsicums, carrots, tomatoes, beetroot, eggplant and beans.

To beat the bugs, he suggested a molasses and detergent spray or other organic sprays.

THE issue I’d like to talk about in this edition is the basic care of fishing gear.

At the end of every session, I wash my gear with fresh water.

Anything that’s been with me is hosed off and allowed to dry before being put away, including terminal tackle.

Salt is extremely corrosive and quickly degrades our gear to the point of repair or replacement. Salt gets left behind once saltwater and spray has dried and this causes corrosion very quickly.

Line guides: Tiny deposits get in between the metal frame of the guide and insert ring, and begin to grow and expand. They will eventually break the metal of the guide frame, which results in the ring falling out and leaving a corroded metal frame for our line to pass through. This drastically damages line and causes breakages.

Rod grips: Give these a thorough spray to remove any fish slime, scales or similar. If left, these cause pitting and damage to the grip material.

Reels: I screw my drags

down tightly prior to hosing down. This helps seal some of the reel’s internals against fresh water carrying tiny salt particles inside, causing corrosion. I then give the reel a good rinse down, not using too much pressure anywhere that water may force its way inside. I also ensure the line on the reel gets a good rinse off, as leaving salt deposits here can decrease its lifespan. Leave everything to dry for a couple of hours, then back the drags right off to nothing. Don’t forget to back them off as it will lessen the drag’s effectiveness due to the drag washers being continually compressed. I turn the reel handle and open the bail arm while it’s under the hose, including the bail roller. Corrosion here causes seizing and pitting which damages line and costs us fish.

In general: A light oil or spray of Inox or similar on all metal and moving parts will increase the longevity and effectiveness of our equipment, as does storing gear out of the elements … inside.

Lastly, happy birthday to my mum, who turned 70 last week.

While I don’t think it’s quite what she meant at the time … she always told me, when I was a young bloke, that if I didn’t start behaving myself she’d be reading about me in the paper one day.

BULL sharks have increasingly become a target for recreational fishers in Moreton Bay, and some anglers specialise in their capture during summer and early autumn.

They belong to the large group of sharks commonly called “whalers”.

Sharks are ancient animals; they were around before the dinosaurs and obviously outlived them. In fact, they have survived five mass extinction events.

Bull sharks, tiger sharks and white sharks are the three species most frequently responsible for serious bites on people and fatalities. Deaths from bull shark bites have occurred in Moreton Bay and the Brisbane River.

The average maximum size of a bull shark is 2.4m and 130kg, with females reaching a slightly larger length and weight than males. Larger ones up to 4m have been recorded though. Weight for weight, bull sharks have the highest bite force compared to other shark species including white sharks.

The habitat of bull sharks is wide ranging from the open ocean to freshwater rivers.

Large bull sharks can move over a large geographic area, but they may also spend extended periods of time at a single location and this is thought to be related to prey availability.

Pregnant female bull sharks move into estuaries and near coastal areas to breed during the warmer months. Bull sharks, like most sharks, give birth to live young. They are termed ovoviviparous – there is internal fertilisation, but the female shark does not directly nourish the developing

DR DAZZA offspring. This is different to most mammals including us. A bull shark pup can be 60-80cm at birth with litter size varying from five to 14. The length of pregnancy for a female bull shark is about 12 months.

Young bull sharks use rivers and estuaries as nursery areas.

They can live in freshwater or brackish areas for long periods of time. This means they can grow in an environment, where the chances of becoming prey for larger sharks is reduced.

It is only when they grow, that they develop the ability to use marine waters more effectively.

Bull sharks are opportunistic feeders and what they eat depends on their size and location.

They are very effective at hunting in murky waters. They feed on a wide variety of fish and stingrays.

They also scavenge and are known to feed on marine mammals, marine turtles and sea birds. They have been recorded as scavenging on terrestrial mammals such as cows and horses that have been washed into rivers during floods or other events.

If fishing for bull sharks, remember there is a maximum size of 150cm and a bag limit of one per person or two per boat with two or more people on board.

STORY KYLIE KNIGHT DOLPHINS players have already had a taste of how their club’s three-year deal with the Vodafone Warriors will work, training with the NRL club in the preseason and staking a claim for a call-up when the time is right.

And one of the Warriors’ rising stars is looking to make his mark in a red and white jersey in a move that proves the deal benefits both clubs and the Intrust Super Cup competition.

Warriors’ assistant coach Craig Hodges knows the Queensland Cup competition well, having coached at Easts and Wynnum-Manly, and the Brisbane Broncos Under-20s side.

He has been on the ground with Dolphins players during Warriors preseason training at Kiama and Tamworth, and is now with the squad in their bubble at Terrigal.

He said a small group of Australia-based players was at Kiama before Christmas, before the entire group was reunited in Tamworth for an intensive training camp.

Hodges said the team had proven its resilience last season and the squad was

prepared to do whatever they needed to, to make it work.

“They are a good bunch of guys and adaptive to what’s happening. These guys have been remarkable,” he said.

The Dolphins’ Lachlan Timm impressed Hodges during his time with the squad during preseason training.

Hodges said the front rower arrived prepared, focused and dedicated.

“He was fantastic, with his training and his work ethic … second to none,” Hodges said.

“He was very conscious of his diet and gave himself the chance to have his best day, every day. His whole attitude to preparation was outstanding.”

“If he doesn’t get to play for us, I expect he’ll have a very good year for Redcliffe.”

Former Norths Devils backrower Pride Petterson-Robati secured himself a contract and will definitely wear the Dolphins’ red and white this season.

Hodges was impressed

by Petterson-Robati’s skill and style of play and predicts he’ll get better as the season goes on.

“I hadn’t trained or played for six or seven months. It gives you confidence going into games,” he said.

He said the training focused on honing players’ skills, consistency and getting the basics right.

The 24-year-old returned to Redcliffe on February 1 and is now training with the Intrust Super Cup side ahead of the season start on March 20.

“ Re d cliffe fans will get to see some young, developing players … generation next. There’s some really exciting players among them,” he said.

He said they were the future of the Warriors and Dolphins fans would have

bragging rights to say they saw them play first.

Timm said it was great to train at such a high level after such a long break from playing and training due to the sudden end to the Intrust Super Cup season as a result of COVID-19 restrictions last year.

His focus is now on using those sharpened skills to help the Dolphins win the premiership.

“I just want to play really well for Redcliffe, that’s my main goal,” Timm said.

“Mid-way through the season, if the Warriors need a new player and I’m playing at a level that makes me deserving of a call-up, then everything else will work itself out.”

Petterson-Robati knows the Dolphins squad well, having played against many of them.

His close friend Matt Lodge wanted him to play

for Redcliffe while he was there but Petterson-Robati, who had taken a break from league, was not ready to make the move.

He came to Queensland midseason and joined Norths Devils in 2019.

“It will be nice to play for Redcliffe and hopefully achieve what he did, a premiership,” he said.

The 25-year-old is grateful for his contact with the Vodafone Warriors as a development player.

“I’m very excited. It’s a long journey ahead and a lot of football to be played for Redcliffe. I’m grateful there’s an opportunity for me to play NRL. It’s just a dream,” he said. “I’ll bring a lot of competitiveness (to Redcliffe) and add to the skill that’s there.”

He said preseason had taught him not to take anything for granted.

DECEPTION Bay boxer Waylon Law is determined to secure his first world ranking when he steps into the ring at Eatons Hill Hotel next week.

Law faces Brisbane’s Justin Frost at Eatons Hill for the IBF Asia Oceania Super Lightweight title on March 5, with the winner coming away with a world ranking

in the division’s top 15.

“I’ve never been in this position before and I’m not going into this fight to lose,” Law said.

“I feel amazing and have been training so hard for this. We’re into the last bit of the (pre) fight camp. It’s been a long camp but good.”

This will be the third time Law and Frost have fought in the past six months and each fight has been labelled one of the ‘fights of the year’.

Law took the first one, ending Frost’s unbeaten run, but the Iceman reclaimed the Australian title in a rematch. They were decided on a split decision and majority decision by judges.

“We’ve spent over an hour in the ring, so we know each other quite a bit,” Law said, adding he had been “working on a few things” in his fight plan.

“He’s a very strong

come-forward type of fighter, so we’re preparing for that,” Law said “The last fight was not a loss, it was a lesson to be learned, a speed bump. I didn’t take this third fight to lose.”

DECEPTION Bay (TeamDBLA) will have almost 60 athletes at next month’s Little Athletics Queensland McDonald’s State Championships at QSAC. It follows a remarkable haul of 35 gold, 55 silver and 43 bronze medals at the Nordic Sport SunCoast Regional Championships at Zammit Oval, on February 6 and 7.

Of TeamDBLA’s 116 entries at the Regionals, which it hosted, 93 were Under 9-17 athletes eligible to qualify for the state titles – and 59 made it by finishing in a top-four position.

In hot conditions, there were many personal and season bests by TeamDBLA as well as three SunCoast Regional Championship records.

Summer Millard smashed the Under 16 Female 1500m racewalk record, clocking 8 minutes 24.64 seconds – 29.54 seconds better than the 2016 record of 8:54.18.

Nahkiyha Mullins-Walit broke the Under 13 Female javelin record with 36.52m, which was 96cm better than the 2014 record of 35.56m.

Jaden Armitage also threw 28.17m in the Under 9 Male discus to beat the 2017 record of 27.97m by 20cm.

Deadline for new centre BRISBANE Roar’s W-League team is a closer to calling the Moreton Bay Region home, with designs underway for a new Queensland Centre of Excellence for Women’s Football at the South Pine Sports Complex.

PRESIDENT Craig Feuerriegel says success at state level “must continue” for Power to continue its drive towards a new National Second Division.

Power raced through Queensland’s second tier (FQPL) to the top of the NPL with two premierships in three seasons – and have strengthened during the summer.

“One of the challenges after winning the Premiership is following up with a strong performance the next season and challenging again.

“I am pleased that head coach Aaron Philp has continued to assess what is needed to maintain our goal of another strong year in this competition.

“We have added another experienced coach Jordan Manning to the senior team. Jordan is currently the Brisbane Roar A League team’s strength and conditioning coach.

“We have also added some very exciting Under 23 players who will no doubt play first team this season for the club. Our ambition is always to represent our region in the highest level of competition.

POWER coach Aaron Philp and his squad will start by chasing more silverware – the Foundation Cup, which was last in the club’s trophy cabinet in 2019.

As the NPL Premiers, Power face Logan, the promoted FQPL Premiers, in the traditional season curtain-raiser at AJ Kelly Park on March 5, kick-off 7.30pm.

However, Philp said the squad was “not dwelling” on the defence of their Premiership or being a more prized scalp for opponents.

“Some say it can be hard to defend (a title) and I guess other teams will be looking to beat us, but it’s not something we’re dwelling on,” Aaron Philp said.

“We’re just looking forward to round one – any talk of titles and trophies can wait.

“Our preseason is going well, fitness levels are going up, new players settling in. I think we’ve improved in certain areas and we’re as strong as we were last year.”

Power have added the likes of goalkeeper Brendan White and defender Michael McGowan from Strikers, as well as forward Zander Guy from Gold Coast United.

POWER’S women’s team is “up for the challenge” of the NPLW, Queensland’s top women’s competition, coach Oliver Denny said.

After three years in the Brisbane Women’s Premier League (BWPL), Power have rejoined the NPLW, which it left as Premiers and Grand Final winners in 2017.

Much of last season’s BWPL squad has been retained for 2021 with “five or six additions”.

They include midfielder Emily Phillips and Abby Belford who have returned to Power and Tegan Van Vegchel, who was at The Gap last year.

“The club’s looking forward to the challenge,” Denny said. “We have reinvigorated the squad but are still looking for talented players. We are preparing for a tough year and we’re looking longer term. We have some good juniors coming through, showing a lot of promise and potential.”

Power’s NPLW campaign starts on March 13 at home to Mitchelton, before a bye round and then trips to The Gap and Brisbane City. The NPLW has expanded from 11 to 17 teams this season.

POWER’S junior boys have stepped up into the NPL’s Academy this season, but technical director Paul Dymock said the club’s approach would not change.

“It’s still all about developing each individual player,” he said, “not about results. If you are getting beaten each week, results can show you need to improve.

“Results are important to some people, but as a club we are focussed on individual player development. We will, for example, move a player up an age group to help his development. It may impact the team below, but development is the key.”

Power have retained 60 of the 64 players who helped it step up from the Development section last season. A sports science program was introduced last year to monitor the loading for players and those aged 16 and above had individual strength and conditioning.

Power’s promotion for the Under 13-16 Boys’ teams followed assessments by Football Queensland’s Club Development Unit, whose assessment gave each club a ranking.

Socceroo to star for Masters at festival A NEW showcase of Indigenous footballing talent will be launched at AJ Kelly Park, Redcliffe, on Saturday (February 27).

Designed to help unite football in the state, the festival will pitch the national Indigenous women’s and men’s teams against hosts Peninsula Power at 5pm and 7pm respectively.

Power’s Masters team will kick things off against the South Coast Jummalungs, an Over35s side from NSW, in the curtain-raiser at 3pm.

Former Socceroo and now TV analyst Craig Foster has confirmed he will play in the Masters match. SBS will broadcast the men’s and women’s games live.

“Our vision is to unite football in Queensland and events like this help bring communities together,” Football Queensland President Ben Richardson said.

“We were delighted to see so many clubs wearing Indigenous-inspired kits during NAIDOC Week and look forward to watching this event unfold.”

The Indigenousroos and Indigenous Koalas teams were first selected following the Australian Indigenous Football Championships in Queensland and went on to compete at the 2019 Arafura Games, winning gold and silver respectively.

Past and present National Premier Leagues (NPL) Queensland players Ramone Close, James Brown and Samara Christmas are among the stars involved with the two squads.

THE Special Olympians of Moreton North (SOMN), some from Redcliffe and North Lakes, are starting a journey which may take them from Morayfield to Berlin, via Tasmania.

Once every four years the Special Olympics Queensland Games is a gateway to the national and then world titles for athletes with an intellectual disability.

SOMN will have around 60 in the SE Qld opening ceremony at Morayfield Sports and Events Centre on March 7 and all will be in action over the following four weekends.

They range from Redcliffe’s world champion gymnast Martin Smith and world swimming gold medallist Tim Gould, to Kailum Leoroyd, of Narangba, in his first State Games.
