Small steps making a big difference A 30km walk from Brisbane to Redcliffe is just the beginning of a series of adventures for author and book coach Jas Rawlinson.

The self-proclaimed “Non-Adventurous Person” completed the walk only hours before the most recent COVID-19 lockdown in a bid to raise awareness about – and money for – Project Karma, a charity dedicated to fighting child exploitation.

“The most I was able to do prior to my charity walk was 12km − so I really did have a challenge ahead of

me when the day came and I was facing 30km.

“I thought that walking 30km in honour of July 30 (Anti-Trafficking in Persons Day) would be a good match, but as someone who isn’t naturally sporty, I also felt that 30km was far enough to really test myself.” Her fundraising paves the way for her to take part in Adventure All Stars, a reality TV series that combines travel with philanthropy.

Each episode of the series, which starts production in September, is filmed in a different location around Australia, showcasing amazing sights and experiences.

“As a cast member, I won’t know where I’m going or what I’m doing until I arrive − it’s a complete surprise,” she said.

Money raised by participants in the next series will be donated to Project Karma.

Community rallies for foodie festival STORY KYLIE KNIGHT WHEN word spread that the snap COVID-19 lockdown forced Moreton Bay Food + Wine Festival’s cancelation just minutes after opening, the community started to rally.

Many were asking what they could do to help organisers, (not-for-profit) Moreton Bay Region Industry and Tourism (MBRIT) and vendors who suffered significant losses.

MBRIT Chairman Shane Newcombe said his team was devastated to have to shut down the festival site 13 minutes after opening, following a successful free Friday night launch party which gave the community a taste of what was to come.

“We know that we’re not alone and so many can relate to the devastating impact COVID-19 is having, not only financially but emotionally. The financial impact is significant, but the emotional toll is greater,” Mr Newcombe said.

“Our incredible #TeamMoretonBay has been working tirelessly for months to deliver a world-class seaside food and wine festival, set to be enjoyed by 30,000+ foodies from all over SEQ.” By the time the lockdown was announced, the festival site was fully operational.

“This means, that from this moment we were responsible for 100 per cent of the operational costs including theming, hire equipment, infrastructure, and staffing not to mention marketing costs already incurred,” he said.

Despite this, MBRIT will provide vendors and market stalls full refunds of their stall fees and will pay

MBRIT has also launched an online shop so supporters can buy festival cups, drink coolers and even Moreton Bay bug-flavoured macadamia nuts.

Nutworks created the nuts especially for the festival and has about 1000 bags for sale.

MBRIT has also created an online directory listing all the vendors and producers involved with the festival to give people the chance to support them direct.

“To our incredible vendors and stallholders, thank you for your understanding, especially when you were hurting. Together, we created one hell of a festival, and when things went incredibly wrong, even amongst the tears, there was a real sense of camaraderie and community onsite.

“To our sponsors and the general community, we’ve been blown away by your support and ongoing messages of good wishes. Many of you are refusing refunds to support the loss of income. We’re so proud to call this region and our community home.”

Support for local business BUSINESSES across the Moreton Bay Region affected by the latest COVID-19 lockdown looking for support might be struggling to know where to start.

Moreton Bay Regional Council has put together a list of places business owners can go for financial assistance, personal support, advice and training during these challenging times.

There is already plenty happening including a freeze on licencing fees for hospitality businesses (since September 2019), rates relief for those experiencing financial distress and record investment in infrastructure in a bid to keep the region’s economy firing.

A massive $104 million in combined government spending on infrastructure has been injected into the local economy to fund 146 projects and support more than 1500 jobs.

Moreton Bay Regional Council provided 40 per cent of that funding and was one of the fastest councils in the country to recognise the benefit of putting

Mayor Peter Flannery said the successful response has been a whole-of-community effort. “While Council has budgeted $55 million to pay for all our different stimulus initiatives at this tough time, the greatest support has actually come from locals standing by each other,” he said.

Change to EKKA long weekend THE MORETON Bay Region’s public holiday for the EKKA will be rescheduled due to the COVID-19 lockdown across 11 of the state’s local government areas.

Councillors voted last week to reschedule the region’s upcoming show public holiday, which was slated for Monday, August 9.

Mayor Peter Flannery said it was essential to try to provide businesses with some certainty so they could continue their operations.

“This is absolutely critical after the cancellation of Moreton Bay Food + Wine Festival, so I want to assure local businesses that they’ll enjoy the benefit of an alternative long weekend later this year,” he said. “Moving the holiday will mean residents and businesses can really make the most of a long weekend when lockdown is lifted, and we’ll be looking at a ‘stay and play’ campaign to encourage locals to celebrate the event in our region.”

Mayor Flannery said the new date was yet to be determined with the State Government, but Council would advocate for another long weekend of celebrations, possibly around Redcliffe Kitefest.

Epic race to the altar STORY KYLIE KNIGHT AIMEE Houston and Nicholas Richards were facing the prospect of postponing their wedding for the second time, when their wedding venue, celebrant, suppliers and DJ sprang into action after the snap COVID-19 lockdown was announced on July 31.

Their wedding originally scheduled for 3pm at the Golden Ox at Margate had to be brought forward, with less than two hours to prepare. The Golden Ox owner Nick Tzimas said he had just arrived at the Moreton Bay Food + Wine Festival, where he was booked for cooking demonstrations when word of the lockdown came through at 10am.

“I said straight away, ‘we have to get back to the restaurant’. We came back and I spoke to the bride’s mother. She said, can ‘we do it?’ and we said ‘of course we can’,” Mr Tzimas recalled.

That was at 10.45am and the wedding needed to happen at noon, with savouries at 12.50pm and entrées by 1.15pm. Everyone had to be on their way home by 3.30pm before the lockdown came into force.

Aimee Houston and Nicholas Richards had an earlier-than-expected wedding at The Golden Ox.

“Everyone flew with great speed. All the chefs, apprentices, me and Virginia, the floor staff … everyone went to work straight away to get it ready,” Mr Tzimas said.

The bride said her mother sprang into action, contacting suppliers – all local to the Moreton Bay Region.

“They were excellent. She spoke to the celebrant first, then Nick and came to the decision that we’d try as hard as we could to bring it all forward,” Mrs Richards said.

Meanwhile, the groom was relaxing at the couple’s room at Mon Komo blissfully unaware of the drama unfolding until he received a phone call from his bride.

“I said, ‘you’d better get your skates on because we’re going to have to pull it all forward to make it all happen before 4pm because there’s a snap lockdown’,” she recalled.

They had 48 guests attend and had deliberately kept numbers below 50 in case

of COVID-19 restrictions.

“It’s hard to sum it all up, we’re so thankful,” Mrs Richards said. “We rang the DJ, who was at Woolies and ditched a trolley of groceries and ran. The celebrant was at the bakery eating a pie.

“Their dedication was above and beyond. We couldn’t be more thankful for the enormous effort to make our love story happen on the day.”

Mr Tzimas said he was proud of is team.

Extra time to pay your rates RATEPAYERS will have extra time to pay this quarter’s rates, with Moreton Bay Regional Council extending the due date.

The original due date of August 18 was last week extended until September 15.

Council voted unanimously in favour of a range of assistance measures for ratepayers, local businesses and community organisations who have been impacted by COVID-19.

Mayor Peter Flannery said the initiatives, including extending rates and food licence renewal due dates, as well as fast-tracking payments to suppliers would provide some relief to those doing it tough.

“Extending the due date of rates by four weeks, and the payment renewal of food licences until January 3, 2022, will help reduce the immediate burden on businesses and individuals

suffering financial loss as a result of the lockdown,” Mayor Flannery said.

“This is about affording people a little time if that’s all they need to get on top of their bills and provide them with additional shortterm cashflow to be able to sustain and recover from the lockdown.

“For Council contractors and suppliers, we’re continuing our accelerated payment terms to ensure cash gets into their pockets and our economy faster, because we are acutely aware that cashflow is one of the greatest stresses for local businesses right now.”

Mayor Flannery said since the start of the pandemic, Council had supported the community and local businesses through assistance measures and targeted projects to stimulate the economy worth more than $55 million.

WHAT’S HELPING SO FAR Moreton Bay Regional Council initiatives since March 2020 include: • Providing $7 million in Community Infrastructure Revitalisation and Community Hardship and Assistance Grants • Rates rebates • Food Licence refunds (two financial years) • Suspension of rate collection activities and the introduction of an interest-free period

Making kids ’appy in tough times STORY KYLIE KNIGHT IT HAS been a tough 18 months for most families – a fact not lost on nineyear-old William Rose who was pondering this, when he decided one night to do something about it.

The youngster from Newport said he had seen on TV that ‘people were really sad now’ and came up with the idea to develop an app one night, when trying to get to sleep.

That was a few months ago and since then, he and his mother Shauna have engaged an app designer and plan to release Emotionease in the next couple of weeks.

“He said he wanted an

app because that’s what kids use these days. Every child has some form of device, phone or iPad,” Mrs Rose said.

“William and I have spent a long time drawing it out.

The app designer said to come back with colours, logos and a name. We have tweaked it from there.”

They have ensured it suits all learning styles − visual, auditory, reading/writing and kinesthetic.

William wants children to better understand their emotions and for their parents to be aware of how they are feeling. “I want to make people happy,” he said.

“I want people to understand their emotions and

other people around them to understand what they’re going through.”

The app does just that, teaching children about their feelings while keeping track of their mood and offering links to crisis services such as Kids Helpline and 1300SICK. There is also capacity, with permission, to allow parents, guidance officers, psychologists and others to monitor a child’s wellbeing.

St Paul’s School at Bald Hills will be the first prototype school and its Year 11 and 12 students have already provided feedback.

Once testing has been completed William and his mum are keen to roll it out

to other schools, who they are hoping will subscribe and make it available to their students.

They want it to help children at risk of falling through the cracks by helping them understand their emotions and giving those in a position to help them useful information.

Mrs Rose is also working with Queensland Police Service, which is keen to promote the app’s use via its mental health liaison officers.

“I really hope it works,” William said. The Year 4 pupil said he might like to be an app designer one day and has enjoyed seeing it come together.

Remote working’s no barrier to fundraising for the generous team at Deception Bay Community Youth Programs.

D-Bay ‘Daggy Bunch’ STORY JODIE POWELL THE team at Deception Bay Community Youth Programs did not miss a beat during the latest COVID-19 lockdown, hopping straight onto Zoom to keep the service running – and even raising money for another charity.

Director Janine Botfield said the service was no stranger to nimble thinking, with last year’s first lockdown allowing it to deliver youth work digitally and parenting programs online.

This time around, the transition to remote working and service delivery was seamless, Ms Botfield said.

“We completed a full planning day in lockdown in a Zoom meeting, including games, dance breaks and some serious work,” Ms Botfield said.

The day coincided with a planned fundraiser for Brisbane Youth Service, which works with young people aged 12-25 years.

their daggiest knits to help shine a spotlight on the issue of youth homelessness.

With the money raised, Brisbane Youth service is able to provide life-changing services and assistance for young people experiencing homelessness.

LEUKAEMIA Support Queensland (LSQ) has launched a campaign to build a state-of-the-art pathology laboratory at Redcliffe Hospital, Caboolture Hospital or North Lakes.

LSQ is lobbying for a pathology lab with consultant pathologists and will use the Week for Leukaemia (September 8-12) to raise awareness and fundraise.

President Jane McMillan said the lab had been the organisation’s “dream for a number of years” and consultants were crucial to help speed up blood test results and diagnosis.

LSQ, a not-for profit run by volunteers, has already successfully campaigned for a haematology centre in North Lakes and a pathology lab is seen as the next step.

“There are 37 laboratories in hospitals in Queensland,” she said, “nine of those have consulting pathologists attached.

“In the Moreton Bay Region, we have two of the largest hospitals and we do not have any consulting pathologists. Our concern is the time it takes patients to gain results from blood tests when they have been diagnosed with serious diseases like leukaemia, lymphoma, etc.

“The immediate purpose of this campaign, A Day for Leukaemia in the Moreton

Bay Region, is to raise the funds to build a state-ofthe-art pathology centre in our region.”

Ms McMillan said the centre would speed up diagnosis of leukaemias and other life-threatening diseases as well as attracting specialists for research.

Discussions have already been held with Deputy Premier and Member for Murrumba Steven Miles, State Health Minister and Member for Redcliffe Yvette D’Ath and State Treasurer Cameron Dick.

Ms McMillan said blood tests are being sent to consultant pathologists at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s or Prince Charles Hospitals and may take five days or more to come back.

“If a consultant pathologist was in one of our main hospitals, here in the Moreton Bay Region, these results would be gained much more quickly,” she said.

“It is imperative for someone who has leukaemia or any cancer to get these results in a timely manner.

RETURNING to dancesport after a long break has proven fruitful for Jennifer Oehl and Scott McLeish, with the national championships in their sights after success at the state championships earlier this year.

The pair danced away with four gold medals at the 2021 Queensland National DanceSport Championship at Chandler Arena Sleeman Sports Complex in late May. Ms Oehl said they had wins in the C Grade categories for Ballroom and New Vogue, while placing fourth in the Open Ballroom category.

For her it comes after a 25-year break from the sport, following the birth of her first child and a long break for Mr McLeish who also took time out for family.

She put her dancing shoes back on about 18 months ago and has been competing since January.

The pair plan to compete at the Australian Championships in Melbourne in December in the same categories that brought success at a state level.

“We should get into a final, I can’t see why not,” Ms Oehl said.

She said they were always looking for ways to improve, training two or three times a week, with the blessing of their supportive partners in life.

Ms Oehl enjoys the fitness and creative aspects of dancing, but not what it takes to look glamourous on the dancefloor.

“I don’t like the cakedon make-up. My father used to call it the warpaint,” she said laughing.

Short bursts of high energy are required, but also endurance to get through a gruelling 12 hours of competition.

“Some people say it’s the equivalent of running a marathon – the energy we use and the length of the competition,” Ms Oehl said.

The pair is working on

Latin American routines for competitions next year.

Ms Oehl said everyone should give dancing a try – it was just a matter of co-ordinating natural rhythm with music.

She and Mr McLeish are regulars at the Friday Night Social Dance Night at Woody Point Hall.

Timely funds boost for animal charity ORGANISERS of this year’s Jetty 2 Jetty Fun Run have presented charity partner Peninsula Animal Aid with a cheque of more than $11,000 to help the organisation continue to care for animals in need.

The money was raised from entry fees and additional donations from this year’s entrants.

Jetty 2 Jetty was organised

by Moreton Bay Region Industry & Tourism (MBRIT) and Moreton Bay Road Runners, in partnership

with Moreton Bay Regional Council.

MBRIT Chairman Shane Newcombe thanked this year’s Jetty 2 Jetty participants for supporting the event and helping raise so much for PAA. “Peninsula Animal Aid is run by volunteers who have a passion for caring for animals. We’re thrilled we have been able to support their work in this way,” Mr Newcombe said.

had negatively affected the organisation’s income and the donation was “of enormous assistance”.

“This donation will help PAA continue with the high level of care and feeding of the animals, until

they find their forever homes. Vet bills alone are many, many thousands of dollars each month,” she said.

“This event provided a wonderful opportunity to promote PAA on social media and at community events. Our social media has been busier than ever.

“Financial support is our greatest need at the moment. This can be done online, or by direct deposit. As PAA is a registered charity, all donations over

$2 are tax deductible.”

Moreton Bay Road Runners spokesman Andy Almond said the club was pleased with the amount raised for Peninsula Animal Aid. “It exceeded our hopes and it’s great to see just how much of an impact the running community can have to a local organisation,” Mr Almond said.

Youth camp to give at-risk boys life skills

Youth worker Sanford McMurray has a camp in September.

YOUTH mental wealth coach Sanford McMurray is passionate about helping young people overcome challenges and realise their potential, and will run camps for boys during the September school holidays.

The camps will run for three days, Wednesday to Friday during both weeks of the holidays.

“The boys will learn to shop, cook and budget for shopping. There will community jobs on offer to earn money,” Mr McMurray said.

“There will also be a book club that they must be part of, financial literacy and discussions on topics most boys are not taught or given the opportunity to share such respect, how to date and how to share their thoughts and ideas in a respectful and unapologetic way. Of course, there will circus arts, tennis and much more.”

The program will only take 12 boys each week. The cost is $200 which includes snacks and lunch and all lessons. It will run from 9am to 3pm each day.

Mr McMurray specialises in working with clients through telling the truth, movement and performing arts.

He is a youth mental wealth life coach, educator and author in his final year of study for a diploma in counselling.

Mr McMurray has worked with Open Minds, The Raise Foundation, Deception Bay Youth Community Programs and in Queensland schools for 15 years.

The program’s key focus areas are shortterm planning and goal setting.

“We dive into their fears, addiction and trauma. We use movement, performing arts and other forms of creative expression to unlock the four Rs of healing - relaxing, regulating, relationship building and reasoning,” he said.

Mr McMurray also runs a youth program at YMCA Mango Hill. He is planning a camp for girls and a collaborative camp.

Moreton Bay Regional Council is riding that Olympic high by upgrading key public facilities and is calling on residents to have their say on a $600,000 overhaul of the North Lakes Skate Park.

Councillor Jodie Shipway (Div 4) said she wanted input from everyone on final design concepts that were out for consultation from August 9-23.

“I want this awesome project built with locals in mind, especially local kids, so please get them online to tell us if we’ve hit the mark or not,” Cr Shipway said.

CHILDREN with disabilities are learning to ride horses and boost their social skills with the help of Pender Riding for the Disabled Redcliffe.

Volunteer Chris Whittall, whose granddaughter rides with the centre, said it made a huge difference in the lives of young people.

“Some of the children have physical disabilities and it helps them socially as well as physically,” Mr Whittall said.

“Some of the kids are on the autism spectrum and they’re not only learning to ride, they are also learning how to mix with other children in a less formal way.”

Pender is part of Riding for the Disabled Queensland,

which helps people with disabilities access the benefits of contact with horses as well horse riding.

But Mr Whittall said with no government funding, Pender had to raise money to pay for the care of its four horses − Star, Bullseye, Lucy and Caspar.

“There is feed, the cost of the farrier, dentist, veterinarian, occasional transport costs as well as vaccines to ensure that each horse is in excellent condition to carry their young charges,” he said.

This year, Pender launched a new fundraising campaign, seeking an annual sponsorship of

the four horses from local businesses.

Scarborough real estate agency Reid and Co. was the first to rise to the challenge, with a tax-deductible $2000

“The centre is entirely run by volunteers so sponsorship of each of the horses is essential,” Mr Whittall said.

QUEENSLAND Parks and Wildlife has completed 19 of its 44 planned burns in the Moreton Bay Region.

However, ‘hazard reduction’ or ‘prescribed burns’ are still planned for areas in Deception Bay, Narangba and Burpengary.

They include an area at North Lakes Environmental Reserve in Lipscombe Rd and a section at Robert Court Park in Narangba.

Burns are also planned in Albany Creek, Bunya, B u r p e n g a r y, Burpengary East, Cashmere, Closeburn, D’Aguilar, Elimbah, Mt Glorious, Mt Mee, Neurum, Ocean View, Petrie, Sandstone Point, Toorbul, Upper Caboolture and White Patch.

The dates of all burns depend on ground and weather conditions as well as assessments of each site and having wildlife spotters available before, during and after the burns. Planned burns reduce ground fuel and lessen the impact of bushfires while also protecting and enhancing native plants and animals. Properties adjoining the planned burn areas will be letterbox dropped before the burn.

The Griffin resident is now in the Tanami Desert, which straddles Western Australia and the Northern Territory (NT), more than three months and 7500km into her journey.

She left Woodford on May 2 – on her fat-wheeled bike ‘Banjo’ – and has raised almost $9000 towards her $10,000 target for Beyond Blue. Heading back from the Pacific coast, she was to have crossed from the NT into South Australia, back to the NT and into Queensland, finishing in Birdsville.

Peter and Colleen Flanagan’s last visit to Africa came just before the outbreak of COVID-19 last year, when they shipped their car and campervan over to spend 10 months travelling through the continent.

But with overseas visits on hold for the foreseeable future, they’ve turned to creativity to remind them of their adventures rather than forging new ones, with a mural painted by Mr Flanagan capturing some of the more memorable moments of their travels.

in their garden.

On previous trips to Africa, the Flanagans have climbed Mount Kilimanjaro, come up close to mountain gorillas in Rwanda, climbed the Mount Nyiragongo volcano in the Congo and swum in the Devil’s Pool in Zambia.

While they had travelled with guides before, their epic 10-month preCOVID journey saw them travelling alone, finding their way to remote villages and national parks.

Before their solo trip, they had never owned a 4WD,

so they bought one, and a camper-trailer and went to Fraser Island to learn the ropes. But nothing could prepare them for finding bridges washed away in the Okavango Delta in Zimbabwe or the isolation of the Central Kalahari, one of the most remote deserts in the world.

“We camped in Botswana under a camel thorn tree and every afternoon the elephants would come and hit their heads against the tree to knock the pods down to eat,” she laughed.

Awards shine light on local heroes STORY KYLIE KNIGHT TIRELESS volunteers from across the community were honoured during the 2021 Petrie Volunteer Awards on July 28.

The awards were presented by Federal Member for Petrie Luke Howarth during a morning tea at Redcliffe’s Pilpel Restaurant.

Guest speakers included Volunteering Queensland’s Zac Reimers, the man driving the Dolphins’ NRL bid Terry Reader and rugby league legend Petero Civoniceva.

Mr Howarth said more than six million Australians volunteered each year.

“Part of what makes Australia great is the volunteers, people like you and what you give to the community,” he told the audience.

Mr Howarth said as well as the social impact and value of those relationships, volunteers contributed $290 billion annually to the Australian economy.

He quoted former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill: “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give”.

Mr Howarth presented awards to 24 volunteers, with another going to Moreton Bay Region Industry and Tourism Chairman Shane Newcombe who could not be present.

Volunteering Queensland representative Zac Reimers said it was fantastic to be part of events that recognised the contribution of volunteers – often the community’s unsung heroes.

Mr Reimers said while there were three million Queenslanders registered as volunteers, many more helped friends, neighbours and the community during the peak of the pandemic last year.

“It’s so ingrained in our culture that many people would not consider it volunteering. It’s just part of being a Queenslander and being part of the local community,” he said.

Mr Reimers said a strong volunteer base was a sign of a resilient community, and the Petrie electorate was obviously one of those.

The Dolphins’ Terry Reader spoke about the club’s history – forged on

the backs of tireless volunteers since its inception.

He particularly paid tribute to those helping out in junior rugby league – the mums and dads who keep it going.

“The whole game of rugby league wouldn’t exist without volunteers,” Mr Reader said.

It was a sentiment echoed by league legend Petero Civoniceva, who is known for his support of local organisations.

Mr Civoniceva said the role of volunteers was key to his success on the field and gave him the opportunity to realise his dreams.

STORY FLIGHT LIEUTENANT CHLOE STEVENSON PRIVATE Will Yet Foy’s day job is with Moreton Bay Regional Council but, as a reservist rifleman deployed on Exercise Talisman Sabre (TS21), he has been in action conducting urban assault training in North Queensland.

Private Yet Foy was deployed to the Townsville Field Training Area and he and other reservists were training at Line Creek Junction, a custom-built township complete with a local pub, bakery, butcher shop and a bank.

The reservist from the 9th Battalion, Royal Queensland Regiment, said he enjoyed the opportunity to get out of the office and into the bush when working with the Army.

“It’s great. I really love it,” Private Yet Foy said.

“I joined the Army Reserve because I wanted to do something in Defence but I couldn’t commit to it full-time. Army Reserve

was the way I could do that.

“In my day job, I work for Moreton Bay Regional Council in a customer service role and I have been working there for about 15 years.

“I love my job, but it’s really nice to get in a totally different head space and do something completely different.

“We have been going through an urban training package with the 1st Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment, bringing (reservists) up to speed and to the standard where we can work together to do the same level of work as the full-time Army members.

“It’s really good that work was able to give me time off to do this kind of thing.

“For myself, and a lot of the other reservists I work with, we have a good relationship with our work and our supervisors and it’s great we are able to take this time off for the Army Reserve.”

“It’s really good for our reserve unit as well, because the guys that I am here with – the non-com-

missioned officers – will be able to go back and train our other reservists at home in this kind of urban training, so they get something out of it as well,” Private Yet Foy said while in Townsville.

“To be able to get outside

into the bush, crawl around and get dirty, it’s great.

“It’s chalk-and-cheese with my other work, but it’s really good to have a different head space to climb into with my Army Reserve work.”

More than 400 children

were involved in the morning, including 84 Year 6 pupils who helped run the activities.

The theme was ‘Children Celebrating Outdoor Play and Learning’.

Connecting pupils with heritage and culture

A NEW yarning circle at Kippa-Ring State School is connecting pupils with Indigenous traditions.

Literacy and Numeracy Support teacher Jayne Shannon said the circle, created over the last school holidays, was completed in time for the school’s NAIDOC

Week celebrations.

“About 20 percent of our students are Indigenous, so the yarning circle is somewhere we can go to have a chat,” Ms Shannon said.

She said the circle promoted respectful communication and was a safe space to be heard and respond.

The school’s senior students have adopted the circle, which is made from sandstone, during lunchtimes, while other pupils are using it during regular story times. Ms Shannon said the school planned to create a bush tucker garden around the yarning circle.

Noel’s given a lifetime of service STORY KYLIE KNIGHT FOR Noel Powell, the words of his mother still ring true: ‘you don’t want to live your life and not make a difference’.

Her wisdom and his desire to do his bit to make the world a better place have been the driving forces behind 40 years of community service.

During that time, he has been a Justice of the Peace (40 years), member of Rotary (27 years), chairman of Redcliffe PCYC (10 years), and deputy chairman of Regional Development Australia Moreton Bay (seven years).

There have been highlights with all of these groups, but Mr Powell said it was time to step back and hand the baton over to others. Those who know him best say they will believe it when they see it.

Sewing is all in days’ work STORY KYLIE KNIGHT A SMALL team of volunteers is coming together each month to ensure girls and women in developing countries have what they need to live active lives.

They are part of Days for Girls, a not-for-profit organisation which has a network of teams around the world raising money to make washable, reusable sanitary care kits for girls and women in need.

Along with this, the group provides reproductive and hygiene education, and encourages and supports training for communities to produce their own kits and deliver education.

Days for Girls Redcliffe Team Leader Rhonda Brodie said she came across the organisation while living in New South Wales and encouraged the Rotary Club of Redcliffe Sunrise to support it when she moved

to the peninsula in 2019.

“We easily reached our target of 100 kits in the first year, and despite COVID-19 slowing our pace, have continued to complete quality kits for distribution,” Ms Brodie said.

“Our most recent distribution is on its way to Kiribati in the Pacific. Being able to assist our near neighbours produces positive vibes for our volunteers.”

Kits and carry pouches have also been sent to Sudan and Fiji. Volunteers from Rotary and the broader community trace, cut, sew and iron the items for each kit before carefully folding and packing each one. It costs $15 to sponsor each kit.

The kits are plastic-free, so they can be used by women in any country in the world, without fear of creating a waste/pollution problem.

LUCY Lucy is a beautiful eight-yearold sweetie. She originally came to Peninsula Animal Aid as a kitten, and was returned a couple of years later through no fault of her own.

She was adopted again and was a wonderful companion for her new owner for about five years.

REDCLIFFE-based band the Killtoys have found inspiration in the pop/new wave vibes of the 1980s for their latest single and it seems the punters are loving it.

Frontman and guitarist Mick Bristow said Come Alive had received good airplay in England and Scotland where ‘they really like it’ and was gathering momentum at home. It has had ‘reasonable support in Australia’ and was the most popular track being played by Canberra radio station Valley 89.5FM soon after its release.

“It’s striking a chord. I think it feels good.

It’s an enjoyable, fun song. It’s got a great upbeat vibe around it,” Bristow said.

He said it was a flashback to the early 1980s, with a beat you could dance to.

“It encompasses that space and time, but with our own take on it. It’s more rocky than you would have got then,” he said.

“The song is about emerging as your own person and finding your own style and people being a bit shocked at first, maybe. It’s about being brave enough to be who you want to be.

“The reaction has been super positive really. It’s the first pop one we’ve put out for a little while … we’ve been doing mostly rock song. This is a genuine single.”

There’s also a touch of nostalgia for those who enjoyed music in the 80s.

“There’s plenty of hooks to sing along to.

It’s something different,” Bristow said.

“We’re not doing what everyone else is.

People can relate to art you can’t find anywhere else.”

The whole band lives on the Redcliffe peninsula and Come Alive was recorded, engineered and mixed in Bristow’s King Street Studio.

The three-piece group, which also includes Stav Tsolakides on bass guitar and Bevan Bancroft on drums, formed in 2019 after playing together in other bands − most notably The Pretty Fingers who released 10 records and had their music aired nationally. Bristow said he had been in the industry ‘a lifetime’, since he was a teenager and he has an endless fascination to make the best song possible – one that he loves and one that others will also enjoy.

Musician on the right track STORY JODIE POWELL HE began his musical career as the lead singer of pop-punk band Call the Shots, but now former Clontarf State High School student Josh Setterfield is putting his stamp firmly on the country music scene.

The Kallangur local released his latest single, Right About Now, last month and already it is a winner with fans, having debuted at number three on the Country charts and seeing him crowned iHeart Radio’s Artist of the Week.

W h i l e Setterfield grew up with his family listening to country music, firstly in Newcastle and then at Redcliffe when the family moved there in 2000, he found his own style in his teens.

“As a teen I rebelled a little and went down the punk route,” he explains.

“I was in a pop-punk band called Call The Shots for a long time and we were based in Redcliffe.

“Once the band came to an end, I knew it was a risk, but decided to take a chance and try my love for country.”

Josh Setterfield’s latest single, Right About Now, Now, is already a hit with fans.

Brooks and Jesse Slack, the single is the first song Setterfield has recorded that he did not have a hand in writing and mixing.

He has been collaborating with the duo for some time after connecting with Brooks via Instagram, and had written what will be his next single with Slack when Slack mentioned he had a song that would suit Setterfield’s style.

“I was hesitant at first, as it’s not usually something that I do, but the second I started listening to it, it told the story of something that I had already lived, so I connected instantly.”

Setterfield’s punk-pop background is evident in his current repertoire.

“I guess it’s a mix between my pop and punk sides that show a little in my country sound.

“Bands like Florida Georgia Line, Dan and Shay, etc influenced me heaps when writing and performing.”

He is also a big fan of another performer who grew up in the Moreton Bay Region and made a name for himself on the country music scene.

“It’s a stereotypical thing to say as a smaller Aussie country artist, but Keith Urban is pretty much a god to me.

“Even back in my punk days, I used to listen to him while we were on tour and the band were super confused!”

As with all musicians, Setterfield has been hit hard

by COVID-19, but he is hopeful of being back on stage sooner rather than later – although

there is no timeframe for rescheduling a planned trip to Nashville.

“Life pretty much came to a halt," he said.

“Most of my tour has been rescheduled, my overseas trips to Nashville have been on hold for over a year, and pretty much all of us musicians have lost 100 percent of our income.

“It’s real tough. But we’re all in the same boat.

“I’ll have to see where lockdowns take us, keep promoting the new song and do whatever we can to eventually make shows happen.”

Setterfield has fond memories of his time at Clontarf State High.

“I made some life-long friends there that I’ll never forget − most of them in the music rooms or class at school. I was never much for the theory side, but playing the music is where I found my roots.”

He is also a massive fan of the Redcliffe peninsula.

“What is there not to love?

I’ve spent my entire teen years growing up in Redcliffe. It’s a gorgeous place and I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else.”

Start the day strong with this wholegrain breakfast bowl bursting with mushrooms and eggs. The combination of textures with the red wine vinegar dressing is what makes this lighter bowl sing. It’s perfect for the early bird or as brunch on a lazy weekend.

Place the dried mushrooms in a small bowl and cover with boiling water and leave for 20 minutes to soak. Drain and set aside.

In a large frying pan over medium heat, add butter and the leek. Cook until softened and slightly caramelised.

Remove from the pan. Add button mushrooms and cook until tender and slightly caramelised. Remove from the pan.

Add the dried mushrooms and enoki to the pan along with the stock and cook for 3-4 minutes, or until the liquid is absorbed.

Add the mushrooms, leek and quinoa to a bowl along with salt and pepper and toss to combine.

Whisk the red wine vinegar, olive oil and mustard in a small bowl and add to the mushroom and quinoa mixture. Toss well and check the seasoning.

Add the baby spinach. Divide between two plates or bowls.

Fill a large frying pan with 1.5 inches of water. Heat over medium heat until bubbles just appear on the bottom, then add white vinegar. Break one egg and carefully and slowly lower the egg into the water. Repeat with the second egg. Cook until whites are just firm (about 4-6 minutes).

Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towel. Place on top of the salad and serve immediately.

• ½ tsp ground sweet paprika • ¼ tsp ground cumin • 1 tbls green tabasco sauce

• 1 avocado peeled and cut into chunks • 2 tomatoes, diced • 1 carrot, shredded • 2 cups baby spinach

Whisk the egg whites in a bowl. Season with salt and pepper.

Grease a 20cm non-stick frying pan with ¼ tsp of oil and place on the stove over a medium heat.

Pour ¼ cup of the egg whites into the frying pan and swirl around so the whites cover the bottom of the pan.

Cook for 2-3 minutes until the whites solidify, then flip carefully to cook the other side until golden brown on the edges (2 minutes). Remove from the heat and set aside on a plate.

Repeat to make the other egg white wraps.

Mix half of the black beans with paprika, cumin and tabasco in a bowl and mash roughly. Add the rest of the black beans, avocado, carrot and mix together.

Layer each egg white wrap with baby spinach and the black bean salad. Season with salt and pepper and wrap tightly.

THEY can be tricky to grow, but the romance of the rose and its perfume keeps growers coming back for more. Now is the perfect time of year to pop one in your garden.

Bruce Whitfield from Theo's Garden Centre at Kallangur said growing roses could be difficult in our subtropical environment, with the humid conditions ideal for fungal diseases, but it was worth the effort.

In the 30 years they have owned the company, he and wife Judi have learnt plenty about the plants, and have half a dozen bushes at home.

So where do people go wrong?

Roses need to be fertilised regularly and yearn for deep watering at the base, not the leaves. Watering the leaves in the afternoon is a no, no. Doing this will make it easier for fungus to take hold.

“Every time it rains, you should be out there with fungicide on the leaves. You’ve got to be vigilant,” he said.

At this time of year, growers

can buy bare root roses but Mr Whitfield prefers to sell potted plants so buyers can see what they are purchasing.

Before planting, soil must be filled with compost and fertiliser, and the garden bed must be well drained and provide 6-8 hours of full sun a day. Don't worry about the heat of the summer, just keep the water up.

HOW TO GROW ROSES

They need food, water and love There are hundreds of roses but Bruce recommends the hardy top 30, which include Mister Lincoln, Iceberg, Gold Bunny, Queen Elizabeth, Kentucky Derby and Just Joey.

Cut the leaves off and throw them in the bin – do not put them in the garden as this will spread the disease

• Spray with Searle’s Rose Pro, which is an insecticide and fungicide in one. You have to be vigilant in the battle against disease in our subtropical climate • Blackspot is the most common problem.

HARDBODY lures: these are, as the name suggests, manufactured from timber, plastic or a myriad of synthetics, with internal rattles, silent, and more colour combinations than we can count.

Hardbody decribes the material used in the manufacturing process, however the category encompasses a few styles or sub-categories which I'll broadly break into surface, diving and sinking.

Surface: "Poppers", are floating surface lures which have several different designs, with the most common being either, "skipping", "blooping", or, tentatively, “floating stickbaits".

Skipping poppers usually have an angled or slanted face and are retrieved quickly across the top of the water to resemble a fleeing or, "skipping", baitfish.

Blooping style poppers have a cupped or concave face and create a splash, bubble trail and blooping noise when retrieved with a stop/start technique, with this extra commotion attracting a predator’s attention. Bloopers can also be retrieved via a constant retrieve to create a bubble trail behind them which silhouettes very well from beneath, however the stop/start technique is generally more productive with this style of lure. to remember that different species of fish respond to different retrieve styles and speeds, so don't be afraid to experiment if one retrieve style isn't producing.

“Floating stickbaits” generally have a plain, rounded nose and don't appear to have a strong action. Once again, experimentation with retrieve style is important with this type of lure. Different retrieves give vastly different results in the action of these lures with a, "walk the dog/zig zag", action being very common. This imitates a wounded baitfish presenting an easy meal for hungry predators.

Some of the more advanced, quality stickbaits have incredible actions which can see them turning almost 180 degrees on the pause between twitches or rips.

Further surface lures such as paddlers, crawlers and fizzers exist, and these are broadly best described as the forefathers of blooping, commotion-style lures.

Hopefully I've given you a decent outline of basic surface hardbodies and next edition we'll cover diving lures.

WE’VE all seen the headline numbers that an estimated one in two Australians aged 16-85 years old experience a mental disorder during their lifetime, and an estimated one in five Australians aged 16-85 years have experienced a mental disorder in the previous 12 months. Mental disorders are slightly more prevalent in men, but this does not make them any less relevant for women.

So, what has this got to do with recreational fishing? Everything.

Recreational fishing contributes positively to personal wellbeing and mental health. In one of the few Australian studies of its type, Curtin University identified the health and wellbeing benefits of recreational fishing centred on a general “positive state of mind” including stress relief, relaxation, mental health, clarity of mind, happiness and fun. The value anglers placed on recreational fishing was highlighted by approximately 80 per cent of survey respondents identifying fishing as important or very important to their health and wellbeing. Recreational fishing can build an individual’s self-esteem, and this can transfer to other parts of their life.

Fishing is a mindfulness activity and had been long before the term was coined and became popular among psychologists and self-help gurus. Mindfulness is a type of meditation in which you focus on being intensely aware of what you're sensing and feeling in the moment. That is fishing in a nutshell – focusing on what you are sensing or feeling in that moment! While many an angler may baulk at the various mindfulness activities that feature in self-help guides, they are often doing similar exercises in a very different context but still deriving the benefits from them.

DR DAZZA Beyond benefits to the individual, the value of recreational fishing to society has traditionally centred on expenditure of disposal income and the purchase of equipment and boats. This is a very narrow view as the positive mental health benefits can generate much broader economic benefits and benefits to society. Recreational fishing can reduce the mental health burden of society and reduce demand on medical and health services. You should be able to claim part of the costs of a fishing trip on Medicare!

COVID restrictions where fishing is prohibited for a significant period add to the mental health burden of individuals who rely on it for wellness.

In recognition of how the benefits of recreational fishing for mental health are now part of mainstream understanding, there is a dedicated Queensland-based Facebook group – Fishing for Mental Health. The group was developed to help people that have mental health challenges (e.g. autism, bipolar, social anxiety). It is established as a positive environment for people to post fishing catches and questions and share their experiences. It’s a great group to join and realise that if you are having mental health challenges, you are not alone in the recreational fishing sector.

Dolphins waiting to take field STORY KYLIE KNIGHT THE Dolphins’ Intrust Super Cup and Hasting Deering Colts seasons are in limbo as South East Queensland emerges from its snap eightday lockdown this week.

Restrictions announced by the State Government on Sunday included a ban on organised sport of any description until 4pm on August 22 including community, club and recreational sport.

The ban includes statewide competitions such as the Intrust Super Cup and Hastings Deering Colts. Both competitions were suspended on July 31.

In a statement, the Queensland Rugby League (QRL) said: “During this time, a ban on community sport has been put in place for the next two weeks, and as such, all training and games are prohibited for clubs in the Brisbane, Logan, Moreton Bay, Ipswich, Lockyer Valley, Redlands, Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast,

Noosa, Somerset and Scenic Rim local government areas (LGAs).

“As a result, QRL’s statewide competitions including Intrust Super Cup and Hastings Deering Colts have been suspended during this period.”

Rounds 15 and 16 were cancelled in which the Dolphins’ Intrust Super Cup side were to play Mackay Cutters (August 1) and Northern Pride (August 7). They were due to play Souths Logan Magpies in round 17 at Davies Park on August 15.

Coach Adam Mogg said the situation was changing constantly but players had been following fitness programs and doing what they could to stay on track while in lockdown at home.

“They’ve been trying to keep each other ticking over as far as the physical side goes and being in touch mentally, knowing the team is still together even though they’ve been in home isolation,” Mogg said.

He hoped the lockdown and lack of training would not slow the momentum the side had created in the past couple of months but said ‘we’ll have to wait and see’.

“Probably for us the lockdown has been OK, some guys will come out of injury and we’ll have more troops on board,” he said.

Mogg said the season had already been shortened and he expected it to be shortened further ahead of the

But there is also talk the season might be extended, so nothing is set in stone.

“We’ll work towards that until we hear otherwise.

We’ll keep doing what we’re

doing. The guys are pretty good doing their own thing at home,” he said.

“We’ve used 46 players this season which must be some sort of record. It’s a real compliment to our football club – the Colts and the QCup teams.

“We’ve had so many inju-

ries and bad luck which is probably a reflection of not playing last year. The players and staff have stayed the course to do their job. Both QCup and Colts are in the mix, which is a fantastic result.

“We’re still in there with a fighting chance.”

WITH the past three games being cancelled and more uncertainty over when the season will continue, it certainly has been an interesting month.

One thing I can say about our group is that we stick together and continue to drive standards.

During lockdown we were communicating through a group chat and setting fitness challenges to keep the group active.

As a group we have been through this before and it is important to stay positive and look after each other.

Lockdown has been lifted however with no community sport for two weeks we wait on word from the QRL as to what is happening with our season.

We are currently sitting in equal second and have put ourselves into a good position for a home semi-final hopefully in front of a packed Moreton Daily Stadium pending COVID-19 restrictions.

Plans to reschedule Bulls Masters match CELEBRATIONS for the Warehouse Cricket Association’s 100th anniversary were last week postponed – not cancelled – due to the COVID lockdown.

Organisers of the planned Centenary Dinner at The Gabba and Bulls Masters T20 match at Peninsula Cricket Club said both

events “will be deferred to a date to be announced”.

On the association’s Facebook page a post said: “It is intended at this time that both events can go ahead later this year if at all possible.”

The Centenary Dinner was to have been at The Cricketers’ Club, The Gab-

ba on August 6.

Peninsula Cricket Club was to have hosted three T20 games, the final one being a Warehouse Cricket Association side against Queensland Bulls Masters.

The Masters, making their first appearance in the Moreton Bay Region, were to have fielded former

Test players Ryan Harris and Andy Bichel with a host of state stars.

The Softball Queensland 2021 Masters Tournament, due to be held at Redcliffe and Caboolture from August 6-8, has been cancelled.

Hundreds of teams and players from across the

state were due to play. The 2020 tournament also fell victim to COVID restrictions.

However, the Softball Queensland CEO Ross Symonds said: “We will commence discussions with council now to lock in the 2022 Masters Tournament dates.”

THE next generation of athletes are already on track, inspired by their heroes in Tokyo and a dream of representing their country at the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games.

Race walking coach Shane Pearson was at Redcliffe Little Athletics track (before lockdown), taking athletes through their paces before Qld Sports Minister Stirling Hinchliffe and State Member for Redcliffe Yvette D’Ath. Pearson runs a weekly

training session there and at Arana Hills and has plans for specialist coaching at Caboolture.

He is training race walkers, who could follow Redcliffe-born athlete Dane Bird-Smith to an Olympics – maybe Brisbane 2032.

“They’re all saying they’re looking at 2032. They want to be there,” Pearson said.

He has been involved in race walking since he was 11 years old, even racing against Dane’s father and coach Dave at the back end of his career. “I was 17 and that was the start of

my career. I looked up at Dave. He’s done a lot for the sport,” Pearson said.

Pearson loves the physical and mental challenge of race walk.

In winter he has about 20 young athletes and this doubles in summer. They are usually at state level events and many in Australian development teams.

Pearson said the variety in athletics enabled children to learn how to run properly, more efficiently and improve cardio fitness.

As for race walking, it takes endurance of a mar-

athon runner, supreme fitness and core strength, the leg speed of a sprinter, and technical ability.

“Anyone can learn to walk. I think it’s a great event, very challenging event, it’s the best event because it has that cross reference to other sports,” Pearson said.

“Little As is an amazing product. It’s a great place to start. Most sporting people at an elite level have some link to Little As.”

REDCLIFFE State High School’s Rugby League Program of Excellence was, at the time of writing, still hoping to finish its 2021 fixtures.

The latest lockdown forced the Opens Years 1112 Gee Shield Grand Final, against Clairvaux McKillop College, to be postponed last Wednesday.

However, Redcliffe’s Year 8 team is due to play in the Steve Renouf Shield semi-finals against Palm

Beach Currumbin on August 17, after finishing equal top with Marsden.

The Year 10s are currently sixth in the Michael De Vere Cup with one round to play; the Year 7s were fifth in the Brisbane Broncos Old Boys Trophy and the Year 9s missed the Michael Hancock Cup finals.

Pbs for Redcliffe trio THREE members of Redcliffe Leagues Swimming Club all recorded personal bests (pbs) on day one of the Brisbane Senior Short Course Championships.

Rylee Smith was runner in the 400m Individual Medley with a pb; Amelie Hoefel took ninth in 100m Individual Medley and had a pb in 50m Backstroke, while Hilary Rike had a pb in the 100m freestyle.

Head coach Wanda Drew was on deck assisting, as in the junior titles last month,

which saw a host of pbs.

The Seniors was cut short by a day due to the snap lockdown but organisers will try to reschedule the missed events.

Inspiring next generation KAYLEE MC KE OW N KAYLEE McKeown’s golden hat-trick at the Tokyo Olympics is already inspiring future generations, says her junior development coach Jodie Morgan.

Redcliffe-born McKeown was one of the stars of the most successful swimming team in Australian Olympic history.

The 20-year-old won gold in the 100m and 200m Backstroke, 4x100m Medley Relay and bronze in the Mixed 100m Medley Relay.

“We have the next generation (here) and they are saying so many amazing things,” said Jodie Morgan, who coached McKeown at Australian Crawl in Burpengary.

Now junior development coach at the Flinders Aquatic Academy (FAA) in Buderim, Morgan said: “Girls of 11 and 12 …. they idolise Kaylee.

“I’ve got a swimmer Georgia, a breaststroker, with a broken wrist. But after watching Kaylee she’s lifted again and is saying how long until the cast’s off.

“At a meet, a girl of seven or eight from another club went up to one of our parents and said “excuse me, is Kaylee McKeown from your club?”

“The parent said “yes” and the little girl said “she’s so fast” and off she went. It was inspiring.”

Morgan, pictured right, worked with legendary coach Ken Wood at Redcliffe Memorial Pool and still works with McKeown’s current coach at USC Spartans, Chris Mooney. All three were at Burpengary.

McKeown’s mum Sharon said the Olympics “well and truly” delivered more than she expected for her daughter.

“Who dreams of one gold medal, let alone two or three?” she said, “the achievements of everyone on that team were so well deserved.”

Kaylee is almost at the end of a two-week quarantine in the Northern Territory after which she will return home before resuming her international schedule.

CAMERON Smith was just one shot away from the play-off for bronze in the Olympic golf.

Smith, 27, who grew up in Bray Park, hit eight birdies in his final round five under par 66. He was in the battle for bronze, but a dropped shot at the last hole gave him a fourround total 270 (71, 67, 66, 66) and 14 under par.

FORMER Redcliffe playcoach Graham Reid guided India to its first Olympic hockey men’s medal in more than 40 years.

Reid, 57, has transformed the Indian team since taking over in 2019 as the country’s eighth coach in 10 years and capped it with a stunning bronze in Tokyo.

Trailing 3-1 to Germany in the bronze medal match, India – with eight Olympic hockey gold medals, but none since 1980 – scored four times to win 5-4.

Reid, a four-time Olympian, grew up in Redcliffe and was a junior at Redcliffe Leagues Hockey Club.

He won the Brisbane Hockey Association Best & Fairest Medal as a Redcliffe player in 1983 and six years later the Brisbane Division One championship as Redcliffe’s player-coach.

Reid is one of only two players to win league player of the year awards in Brisbane and Perth (1995, 1996, 1998) and is in the Hockey Qld Hall of Fame.

He played 130 games for Australia, winning the 1990 World Cup and an Olympic Games silver medal in 1992.

Reid coached the Australian Kookaburras from 2014-16, winning Commonwealth gold in 2014.

FORMER Redcliffe Leagues Hockey Club junior Renee Taylor and the Hockeyroos bowed out of the Olympics in the quarter-finals, going down 1-0 to India in one of the shocks of the tournament.

Australia was undefeated in five games in Pool B. India needed Britain to beat Ireland to scrape through.

The Hockeyroos’ strong defence – one goal conceded in five games – was tipped to take them to the final, but it was not to be.

THE Aussie Spirit softballers, which included Redcliffe State High School teacher Chelsea Forkin and ex-Redcliffe player Jade Wall, went out in the pool stage.

Australia had to beat Mexico to make the bronze medal match, but lost 4-1.

Wall scored a home run in the sixth inning.

Earlier, the Aussies beat Italy 1-0 and pushed the US, who took silver behind Japan’s gold, close in a 2-1 defeat to finish fifth overall.

DEFENDING a title is always hard, as former Deception Bay rugby league junior Evania Pelite and Australia’s Women’s Sevens rugby team discovered.

Gold medallists in Rio, the Aussies beat China and Japan but came unstuck in hot, humid conditions against the US, going down 14-12, but still making the quarter-finals from Pool C. Sadly, Fiji emerged triumphant by the same score to send Australia out of the tournament.

BRONWEN Knox, whose water polo career began at Albany Creek 20 years ago, was so close to keeping the Aussie Stingers’ medal hopes alive in the Olympic quarter-finals.

Knox was a key figure throughout and had two shots in the final minute as the Stingers went down 9-8 to the Russian Olympic Committee team.

Australia was second in Pool A winning three matches and only losing to table-toppers Spain.

CHARISMA AMOE-TARRANT Narangba resident Charisma Amoe-Tarrant briefly led the women’s +87kg weightlifting in Tokyo.

The 22-year-old made 105kgs on her third lift in the Snatch and 138kgs on her final attempt in the Clean and Jerk for a 243kg total.

But the competition was tough. China’s Li Wenwen took gold with an Olympic record of 180kgs in the Clean and Jerk, an Olympic record 140kgs in the Snatch and an Olympic record 320kgs total.

Lucky is in the 400m Freestyle S9 and possibly a relay team.

The 22-year-old who does massage, strength, conditioning and physio in North Lakes, said the 12-month delay “gave us more time to work on those little one per centers”.

Lucky was at Southern Cross but is now with Belgravia in Burpengary and will be in action on the first day in the S9 400m Freestyle.

Former Southern Cross swimmer Blake Cochrane, who has been drafted into the Australian Paralympic swimming team.

BRENDEN HA LL BRENDEN Hall will launch his bid for a third successive Paralympic S9 400m Freestyle title on the opening day of the Tokyo Games.

The Mango Hill resident took the title in London 2012 and Rio 2016 but admits there’s “definitely a few more after me now”.

But he’s “glad of the competition”.

“I wouldn’t be doing this if I wasn’t excited about pulling on the green and gold again,” said Hall, who trains at Burpengary with coach Harley Connolly.

“It’s a hard process and it definitely gets harder.

KIRRALEE Hayes is under no illusions about the task ahead at her first Paralympic Games.

The 17-year-old from Genesis Aquatics in Bray Park is in the S13 50m Freestyle and S13 100m Butterfly at Tokyo.

“I have thought a little about the races (in Tokyo),” she said. “I am still learning about my opponents and I know I’ve got to work hard.”

Hayes, who trains at the AIS in Canberra and with coach Rick Pendleton at Genesis, has been on the radar since making the finals at the 2019 national championships.

BLAKE Cochrane, a former Southern Cross College student, may have been a late-call-up but is “definitely ready” for a fourth Paralympic Games.

The 30-year-old swimmer missed selection for the original squad, but was drafted in last week when Australia was given an addition team place.

He is in Cairns for a preGames camp and will fly to Tokyo with the team on August 21 to compete in the SB7 100m Breaststroke, S8 100m Freestyle and possibly the relays.

“I feel I’ve done the best swimming of my career over the last six months,” said Cochrane, who trained at Southern Cross Swimming Club, Scarborough, but is now at USC Spartans.

“The consistency is there and I’m really looking forward to the Games. I

“I definitely feel ready for Games” – Cochrane definitely feel ready and I’d love to get a 1:16.00 (1 minute 16 seconds) in the breaststroke.

“I’ve only done it once before in my career (1:16.91) and would like to step back on the podium again.

“Gold may be a little out of reach, but I expect the same line-up from the World Championships (in 2019, when Cochrane won bronze).”

Cochrane, who lived on the peninsula for 18 years, will join a select group in Tokyo. Only 44 Australian athletes have competed in four Paralympics.

He returned with medals from the past three – silver in SB7 100m breaststroke Beijing 2008; gold SB7 100m Breaststroke and 4x100m Freestyle Relay London 2012; silver SB8 100m Breaststroke Rio 2016.

But missed selection for Tokyo at the trials in June and in an interview with Swimming Australia admitted, while still training hard, he had “almost given up” hope.

“I was at the Grand Prix event in Brisbane when I found out they had a spot for me,” said Cochrane who graduated from USC

last year with a degree in Clinical Exercise Science.

“I was warming up to swim one of the last races I would for this year. They pulled me out of the pool and said, ‘we just want to let you know we’ve got a spot for you’.”

Cochrane told few people as he waited a week before it was confirmed and announced.

“It was such a sense of relief,” he said, “I was waiting for the process to unfold and had almost given up, but then to be told I was going to Tokyo, it’s just very exciting.

“It’s a great way to finish the process of the last four or five years. These Games will be interesting. Slightly different, but certainly not disappointing.

“We are privileged to be able to represent the entire country and very aware that so many people cannot even go 5km from home or travel overseas.”

HARLEY CO NN OL LY HARLEY Connolly, Head Coach at Burpengary Aquatic Centre, is in the team of Australian coaches going to the Paralympics.

Connolly has Brenden Hall and Lakeisha Patterson under his wing at Burpengary and is in Cairns at the pre-Games camp.

“It’s not just coaching to a physical fitness level, it’s mental as well,” said Connolly, from Bribie Island.

“It’s making sure they are mentally and physically fit … composed and focussed, confident. I’m usually pretty composed, but happy to celebrate with them!”

Watson set to blaze trail for Australia in historic debut

JANINE Watson, from Warner, will make history at the Paralympic Games (August 24-September 5) in Tokyo.

The 40-year-old is to become the first Australian to compete in Para Taekwondo, which makes its debut in Japan.

A team of three was selected but two have pulled out leaving Watson, who admits she is “a little bit of

a trailblazer”.

“I’m humbled and honoured to have the chance,” the three-time world champion said, “but I was looking forward to going in a team.”

Watson, who has multiple sclerosis, will have to adapt in Tokyo where the Para Taekwondo discipline of Kyorugi (full contact sparring) is used.

“My world champi-

onships were in Poomsae (Patterns),” she told Paralympics Australia.

“In Kyorugi I was only classified at the end of 2018 when they expanded the classification to include people with neurological impairments. Before that I was competing against able-bodied athletes.”

Watson moved from Currumbin to Albany Creek three years ago and was

Head of Maths and Science at Brisbane State High School before being medically retired in 2019.

That has given more time for Taekwondo and Watson is world ranked eight, but has wins over the world numbers two, three, four, five and six, to her credit.

However, the Paralympian says she is the “underdog” in Japan and under no pressure to win a medal.

“I think I fight best in that role,” she said, adding success in Tokyo would be “just getting Para Taekwondo out into the community.

“I want to show people what we can do and how amazing the sport is. If I come home with a medal, then that’s even better,” she told Paralympics Australia.

Plenty for Tigers’ to celebrate REDCLIFFE Tigers AFL players were among the teams that celebrated the inaugural under-9 girls competition in south-east Queensland at a gala night of football.

All Brisbane-based teams came together at Coorparoo AFC to play their final round of fixtures and celebrate the first dedicated under-9 girls season.

To cap a special year, members of the Brisbane Lions AFLW Premiership team presented players with a Lions guernsey.

About 160 girls took to the park to mix it with Emily Bates, Dakota Davidson, Sophie Conway, Shannon Campbell, Bre Koenen, Nat Grider, Jess Wuetschner, Cathy Svarc and Maria Moloney from the Lions.

Tigers coach Nicholas Bradley took on a joint role of Junior Co-ordinator for the club, as well as coaching his son’s under-10 boys team and the under-9 girls in their first season.

Tigers media co-ordinator Kylie Milstead said: “He loves helping and seeing

players take the field. He’s a true Tiger and volunteering runs through his veins.

“He comes down to help at Youth and Senior football games as well.”

Bradley said the under-9 girls’ team would not have been the success it was without the support of players from other teams helping each week.

Twenty-one sides entered the competition across south-east Queensland, with plans to expand to the Sunshine Coast and other locations next year.
