When asked about the

inspiration behind the eyebrow-raising flavour fusion, Nutworks CEO Kylie Shepherd Watson said paying homage to her childhood growing-up on Moreton Bay’s doorstep was the driving force.

“When I think back on my childhood in Redcliffe, two of my fondest memories were digging into some fresh seafood off a trawler, and cracking open some macadamia nuts with a hammer,” she said.

MORETON Bay Food + Wine Festival will kickoff on July 30 with a free launch party for the community.

The event, presented by Traders in Purple, is from 4pm at Apex Park, Woody Point.

It will feature stage entertainment, roving performers, pop-up bars and food vendors under the cover of the popular festival tipis.

Entry is via Gate B (at the Belvedere Hotel end of the festival site).

The Taleena Peck Duo will kick-off the party from 4-5pm, followed by Matty G and the B Sides at 5pm.

Headliners Funk N Stuff will pump out a set of covers to get the crowd on their feet dancing at 6pm before their DJ takes over at 8pm.

Moreton Bay Region Industry and Tourism Chairman Shane Newcombe said the party was the perfect way to kick-off the Moreton Bay Food + Wine Festival weekend.

“We are excited about our new festival location, which gives us the opportunity to host a free event for the community ahead of the festival on Saturday and Sunday,” Mr Newcombe said.

“It’s a chance to come on down to the foreshore, enjoy live entertainment, some drinks, a bite to eat and a Woody Point sunset. It will be just a taste of what’s in store for the weekend.”

Mayor Peter Flannery said it was the party the Moreton Bay Region had

earned and deserved.

“We’ve got through this together, and that’s a reason to come together and celebrate,” Mayor Flannery said.

“The fact that the best food and drinks and views in South East Queensland will also be on offer is just the icing on that cake.”

The Mayor said a liquor licence had been approved for the entire party precinct and the event would follow a COVID-Safe plan allowing crowds to come together.

“So, no more isolation parties or watching movies indoors, get back out and enjoy the glorious winter sunshine that makes Queensland the envy of the world,” he said.

“If you’ve missed a birthday or an anniversary or a milestone, then get on down to this event because we want to help you make up for lost time.”

The full Moreton Bay Food + Wine Festival experience begins on Saturday, July 31 and continues on Sunday, August 1.

It will offer unique dining experiences, cooking demonstrations, pop-up bars, live entertainment, food trucks, fireworks, masterclasses, market stalls and more.

Moreton Bay Region Industry & Tourism (MBRIT) has partnered with Moreton Bay Regional Council, Tourism & Events Queensland and sponsors to deliver the event in a new, bigger, COVID-Safe location, which will capitalise on Woody Point’s stunning sunsets.

Flood-proof, safer road on horizon STORY KYLIE KNIGHT THE $12.9 million upgrade of Henry and Dohles Rocks roads at Griffin will start in the coming months, with the project now out to tender and due to be finished early next year.

The upgrade will be funded by Moreton Bay Regional Council (over two financial years), with a $4 million contribution from the Federal Government.

Federal Member for Petrie Luke Howarth and Councillor Jodie Shipway (Div 4) are pleased to see the project progressing and said it was needed to improve safety and provide a route motorists could rely on in wet weather.

The flood-prone road is regularly closed after sustained heavy rain.

“It will be raised higher, flood-proofed, still allow wildlife in the local creek and environment to be protected,” Mr Howarth said.

“The LED lighting that will be installed won’t attract wildlife like bats, possums, turtles etc and is meant to minimise impact on the environment.”

The upgrade will extend from about 300m south of Brays Rd on Henry Rd to about 50m east of Silver-

“Working with council enables us to get the road built quickly and construction should start in September,” Mr Howarth said.

Cr Shipway said the upgrade would be lasting no matter what connector roads were built in the area in the coming years.

“It’s either going to be a service road for the Moreton Connector or it will be a part of the bigger project

but it won’t be sacrificial because that’s what we were most concerned about … wasting Federal funds and council funds,” she said.

Mr Howarth said it was a vital connection for motorists in the absence of on and off ramps (to the Bruce Highway) or a connector road through to North Lakes on the eastern side of the highway.

“This road floods, so basically council and the Feder-

al Government are funding to raise the height of the road. There will be big culverts that go underneath that will allow the creek to flow and turtles and fish in that freshwater creek to swim through,” he said.

Cr Shipway is particularly keen to see the intersection of Henry and Dohles Rocks roads signalised and realigned.

“I’m excited about the safety that it will give to my

community. It’s part of the broader plan for Griffin,” she said.

“I’m really passionate about having a masterplan for Griffin and it starts with this and then footpaths come off it. There’s a lot of footpaths in here that lead to nowhere at the moment.

“The Griffin Sports Complex is coming along too and should be finished early next year so it’s all combining together.”

Winning Olympic Games is just the beginning SECURING the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games is the start of an 11-year journey to upgrade facilities and infrastructure across South East Queensland, including the Moreton Bay Region.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) voted in favour of Brisbane’s bid on July 21.

At the centre of the Brisbane bid was a masterplan including 32 venues across three zones in South East Queensland, connected by ‘high quality roads and public transport networks’.

The greater Brisbane zone included a proposed Moreton Bay Indoor Sports Centre at The Mill Priority Development Area, Petrie.

Moreton Bay Region Mayor Peter Flannery said the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games would put our region on the map.

He said the Moreton Bay Region had been selected to host the Olympic boxing event at the purpose-built Moreton Bay Indoor Sports Centre, which would have legacy benefits.

“We’ll be pulling no punches to ensure this is the best Olympic venue possible so that visitors leave Moreton Bay Region raving about what a great time they had here,” Mayor Flannery said.

“This will have huge ongoing benefits for the region too by activating The Mill Priority Development

Area and providing a community facility that can be used to host multiple indoor sports, exhibitions, trade shows, festivals, community groups and many more. We will continue to work closely with the SEQ Council of Mayors, the State and Federal Governments and the Australian Olympic Committee on

maximising the legacy benefits of the indoor sports centre for our region.”

In addition to new and revamped sporting facilities, the Games will fast-track the delivery of vital infrastructure, which the Mayor said would help the Moreton Bay Region become the powerhouse of South East Queensland.

Land deal for fire station STORY NICK CROCKFORD

CONSTRUCTION work is expected to start next year on a fire station for the North Lakes and Mango Hill area.

The Moreton Bay Central Fire and Rescue Station will be built on a block of almost 5000sq m at Steel St, off Boundary Rd. Planning work will begin this financial year after settlement on the land.

Queensland Fire and

Emergency Service (QFES), pinpointed the location with a key factor being access to major roads.

State Member for Bancroft Chris Whiting described it as a “happy day, when you can see the community is going to be made even safer”.

The case for a fire station had been strong, he said and “working closely with Keith King and Laurence Christie (of Mango Hill Progress Association) made it unanswerable”.

“I’d like to thank Mark Ryan (Fire and Emergency Services Minister) and Steven Miles (Deputy Premier) for going into bat for it. That was crucial,” Mr Whiting said. “Getting land for any project is the most important part.”

Mango Hill Progress Association (MHPA) president Laurence Christie said the group had been lobbying for a fire station since 2008. “When you have members who have experienced a fire beside them,

this becomes very important,” he said.

“We are delighted to have the fire station on the way and look forward to the future when people feel safer.

“Ten minutes is a lot of time, it can save a house and save a life.”

Fire and Emergency Services Minister and State Member for Morayfield Mark Ryan said the location gave “best response to calls for service”.

Mr Ryan paid tribute to MHPA saying it had been

a “strong advocate” and he was “pleased the State Government had been able to support the fire service in the purchase of the land”.

QFES Chief Superintendent Kevin Reading, said: “We’ve done a lot of data analysis and this location will complement other stations, so we get good coverage across the board”.

Design work will happen in the next 12 months before planning approvals and construction timetables are announced.

RUGBY league fans can enjoy not one, but two, NRL blockbusters at Moreton Daily Stadium next month when rounds 20 and 21 come to town.

Moreton Daily Stadium, the home of the Dolphins, will host the round 20 fixture between the Cronulla Sharks and Manly Sea Eagles on Sunday, August 1, at 4pm.

Dolphins CEO Tony Murphy said he was thrilled to see Moreton Daily Stadium host the first NRL fixture in the region. The venue has hosted preseason trial games, but never an NRL fixture.

“This is great news for rugby league fans across South-East Queensland, but particularly the Moreton Bay Region. We want the rugby league community to see exactly what we can do here at the stadium, which is hosting great football,” he said.

The round 20 clash will welcome back some big names, who have been part of the Dolphins’ community − Toby Ruldolf and Daly Cherry-Evans, just to mention a few.

Moreton Daily Stadium will also host the round 21 fixture between the Canterbury Bulldogs and Wests Tigers on Sunday, August 8 at 2pm.

Marine Assist saves the day STORY JODIE POWELL A DEDICATED band of volunteers are the unsung heroes of Moreton Bay, rescuing hundreds of boaties who find themselves in strife on the water every year.

Redcliffe Coast Guard flotilla Commander Ron Grundy said the service’s primary focus was on search and rescue, working with Queensland Water Police and other emergency services.

The crucial work of the Redcliffe flotilla is made possible by about 110 volunteers, who on any given day find themselves coming to the aid of vessels with engine trouble, that have run aground or ferrying people with medical emergencies from Moreton Island, as well as joining major search and rescue operations.

Mr Grundy said more than 200 people had been returned to the mainland

from the island in the past two years alone.

With limited government funding, the Coast Guard relies on sponsorship from organisations such as Redcliffe Leagues Club, Freight Plus, RSL Redcliffe and Brisbane Marine, fundraising and Marine Assist membership to provide its services.

The Redcliffe flotilla is home to five vessels, ranging from its three-metre rigid inflatable boat to its 12-metre flagship worth between $800,000 and $1 million to replace.

Mr Grundy urged anyone heading out on the water to take out a Marine Assist membership, which gives unlimited rescue access each year.

He said it also gave members discounted radio courses that enable boat owners to qualify for a federally-mandated operating certificate to use high-frequency and very high-fre-

“We’re like the RACQ of the water…Marine Assist is our version of roadside service,” he explained.

“We have more than 1500 Marine Assist members, so if they have any problems, we go and help.”

Mr Grundy said the Coast Guard also came to the aid of non-members.

“We go and get them and ask for a donation, we don’t insist on payment,” he said.

Mr Grundy said having a VHF radio on board boats was a huge safety boost.

“A radio on the boat is the best form of communication – a mobile phone is only any good if someone picks it up at the other end.

“Radio is important as well because we give regular weather reports.”

More than just a meal STORY JODIE POWELL REDCLIFFE Meals on Wheels has been delivering meals – and peace of mind – for more than 53 years.

The service, which delivered its first 14 meals in 1967, now delivers more than 200 meals a day.

The meals are delivered direct to the client and cannot be left on the doorstep, however the client can arrange for someone else close by to accept the meal on their behalf – a personal touch appreciated by both clients and their families.

The service about ensuring people who can’t get out and about can enjoy regular interaction and have the comfort of knowing someone will drop by regularly and say hello.

They’re a sentinel for the health and wellbeing of

our clients.

If they are delivering a meal and cannot raise the client, they put in motion any help that may be required.

The meals are prepared in the service’s onsite commercial kitchen by international chef David Clem, who joined the service earlier this year, and a team of wonderful volunteers. Motorcyclists urged to ride by the rules POLICE have urged motorcyclists to stick to the Moreton Bay Region road network after a series of complaints about riders going off-road.

Senior Constable Jo Arthur said police had received numerous reports of motorcyclists hooning through parks, along bike tracks and through suburban streets.

“Not only do these incidents create a noise annoyance for residents, but they

also pose significant risks to pedestrians, kids playing, motorists and (riders) themselves,” Sen-Constable Arthur said.

She said Moreton Bay Region police were investigating three recent instances where motorcycles were ridden inappropriately.

Police have fielded calls about motorcyclists riding through parks at Morayfield.

“The Crestwood Ave parkland and bike paths at Morayfield have been a play-

ground for these particular alleged offenders for some months now,” Sen-Constable Arthur said.

In the second instance, a motorcyclist allegedly failed to stop when police attempted to intercept him on Lipscombe Rd at Deception Bay at 4.51pm on July 2.

“The rider was seen allegedly riding at excessive speeds against the flow of traffic, doing wheel stands and riding on the footpath.”

said the bike path that followed the Redcliffe Peninsula train line near Buchanan St at Rothwell had allegedly been a thoroughfare for a motorcycle rider throughout June.

The alleged rider was been filmed by Moreton Bay Regional Council cameras within the area.

Sen-Constable Arthur said riders not sticking to the rules faced stiff fines, or even a court appearance.

Inspiring future entrepreneurs LOCAL schools can sign students up for a free seven-week training program which aims to help them start their own business – but they need to get in quick, there are just 100 places sponsored by Moreton Bay Regional Council.

The Creating Your Future Job initiative is a self-employment program for youths aged 15-24 years who are disengaged from school or at risk of disengaging from mainstream education and employment.

“This is a unique program that provides face-to-face training for youths and gives them real-world skills in an area of work that aligns with their interests, needs and abilities,” Mayor Flannery said.

During the seven-week program, students will identify local problems and be trained to brainstorm micro-business solutions.

“It will give them the skills and resources needed to start their own business, getting young people to think about how they can help us transform our economy for the digital age,” he said.

“While this kind of initiative is outside the usual scope of a Council’s work, it’s the kind of thinking we need to deliver on the ambitions in our new Regional Economic Development Strategy.”

The program will launch Term 4 2021.

UPGRADES to the program pool at Redcliffe War Memorial Pool are fast taking shape.

New heating and filtrations systems are being installed, so the pool can be heated to a constant 33 degrees.

Work on the 18m pool started in May and was scheduled to be completed in 17 weeks.

It follows work last year on the main 50m pool, which closed for maintenance during which the need for additional repair was discovered.

What started as applying grout and replacing cracked or damaged tiles, stretched to replacing all the tiles. The Sydney St pool, now in its 50th year, reopened in February this year after being closed for nine months.

Little library is inspiring readers

STORY JODIE POWELL WHEN Jessica Wright announced on a couple of community Facebook pages that she intended to start a street library at Mango Hill, she thought a handful of people might be interested.

Instead, she has found a community of readers united by a passion for sharing books.

“I thought one or two people would comment,” Ms Wright said.

“It’s way more popular than I was anticipating.”

Having worked in finance for more than 17 years, Ms Wright said she was delighted to be moonlighting as a librarian.

“I have a massive library inside my own house filled with fiction and non-fiction,” she explained.

“I wanted (a street library) myself because I love them when I see them,” Ms Wright said.

She described the tastes of her fellow Mango Hill bibliophiles as eclectic and said contributions to her little library ranged from

children’s books and biographies to romance, thrillers and DVDs. “I’ve been working from home since last March and it’s nice to have the ability to duck out when I want to and change the books over,” she said.

“I have a huge box full of stuff – there’s people there every single day, which is great to see.”

Ms Wright’s library is registered with the not-forprofit Street Library organisation, which launched its first library in 2015 in NSW with the aim of bringing neighbourhoods together.

There are now more than 3000 Street Libraries registered across Australia, all of which are mapped on the organisation’s website – and they hope to have 5000 registered by the end of the year.

WHAT IS IT? The founders of not-for-profit Street Library say the libraries are an invitation to share the joys of reading with your neighbours. They’re aiming for 5000 registered libraries by the end of the year.

Green light for childcare STORY JODIE POWELL A NEW childcare centre will be built at Scarborough, despite concerns about traffic congestion and pedestrian safety because of its proximity to Scarborough State School.

Moreton Bay Regional Council approved the Eversleigh Rd development, which will provide places for up to 45 children and operate Monday to Sunday.

Councillor Sandra Ruck (Div 5) told last week’s coun-

cil meeting the application had merit, but she was also concerned about safety. “A childcare centre located close to the primary school is convenient,” Cr Ruck said. “(But) the driveway is at the front of the school and next to the school boundary, where students are collected by cars.

“At the moment it’s a driveway of a private residence that might soon cater for many more cars entering that property.”

Councillor Brooke Savige (Div 1) said she was con-

cerned about the impact on neighbours of noise, with the centre planning to open from 6am-7pm.

“They purchased their properties in a suburban area with a residence next to them,” Cr Savige said.

Conditions imposed on the application include the use of the outdoor play area being limited to between 7am and 6pm and the installation of five mechanical car stackers for staff use, increasing onsite parking to 13 spaces.

There will also be parking

for at least two bikes, with bike lockers and a shower.

To make way for the two-storey centre with play spaces on the ground and upper levels, an existing two-story house will be demolished.

An officers’ report said the centre would replicate a residential building scale and be clad with weatherboard and topped with gabled roofs.

“Overall, although it is recognised that the existing school traffic creates congestion at peak times and

that the proposal may add in some small way to the traffic, the proposed childcare centre is a relatively small centre and provides appropriate on-site car parking to cater for the demand of the centre, with Eversleigh Rd itself having sufficient carrying capacity,” the report said.

Five councillors voted against the proposal: Cath Tonks, Jodie Shipway, Denise Sims, Brooke Savige and Mick Gillam, with the remainder voting in favour.

New campaign focusing on knife crimes

FORMER American National Football League player Jesse “Tha Monstar” Williams has helped launch a campaign aimed at reducing knife-related crime in the Moreton Bay Region.

Campaign ambassador Williams joined Police and Corrective Services Minister and State MP for Morayfield Mark Ryan, Mayor Peter Flannery, Federal MP for Petrie Luke Howarth and police at the launch of “I live my life without a knife” at Redcliffe Area Youth Space.

District Crime Prevention Co-ordinator Sergeant Sarah Grayson said the campaign, launched last week, was part of a state-wide approach to empower young people to make better choices about carrying knives.

“The project has been adapted for the local area after a spike in knife-related crime across the Moreton Policing District,” Sgt Grayson said.

Across the state, knife carrying offences grew eight per cent each year between 2015 and 2019, while robberies involving knives increased by about 19 percent.

Sgt Grayson said the campaign was initially run in Logan, where it showed a marked reduction in knife-related crime.

“They’re very supportive of raising awareness to stop other families going

through what they’re going through,” Sgt Grayson said.

“A lot of kids that carry them don’t seem to understand what could happen if they pull a knife out and stab someone.”

Acting Superintendent Paul Ready said education was critical to preventing knife-related offences.

“We want to educate young people and encourage them to make better choices around carrying a knife,” Acting Supt Ready said.

“Young people who carry knives for protection may be putting their own safety at risk due to the likelihood of having the knife used against them.”

Crafty quilters reach great heights STORY KYLIE KNIGHT

QUILTS crafted by the Henzell Street Quilters group will bring comfort to sick and injured people in remote parts of Queensland, after more than 100 were donated to the Royal Flying Doctor Service last month.

The donation was the result of countless hours of work by members of the group.

President Chris Berberich and Secretary Candice Iv-

ermee-Slade said some of the quilts were for children, some for adults but all were bright, cheerful and designed to bring them some comfort on their Royal Flying Doctor Service flight.

This is the first time members have donated quilts to the service as a group, but they have a long history of crafting and donating quilts to worthy causes.

“This was a whole club project,” Ms Berberich said.

“It has taken us a couple of months. People thought it was a wonderful idea, everyone pitched in.”

Henzell Street Quilters has been going for 37 years, this year.

They regularly craft items for charity including bags for Encircle to fill with toiletries for the needy. The group made more than 120 in the lead-up to last Christmas.

Members also make bags for ‘wheelie walkers’, and

sensory quilts for those with dementia.

“The club never stops,” Ms Ivermee-Slade said.

“They’ll always be someone in need or less fortunate. It’s a generosity of spirit that people have,” Ms Berberich said.

“There’s so much that people want to give. It’s giving someone their heart and soul.”

REDCLIFFE State High School students have learnt much more than how to prepare a meal as they hit the kitchen to complete a Certificate 2 in Active Volunteering.

Business and IT Head of Department Roanna Niven said they had been cooking meals for The Breakfast Club of Redcliffe as they worked towards clocking up 20 hours of volunteer work.

“As part of this course students learn theory about

volunteering, working with diverse groups of people and communication with others,” Ms Niven said.

They started the course at the beginning of the year and Ms Niven said it aligned with the school, which is a founding member of the Respect Project, and its focus to engage positively with the community.

“Students have made a difference to the local community by cooking meals for the homeless in association with The Breakfast Club, hosting events at

school to engage students during lunchtime breaks and also assisting the Redcliffe Uniting Church playgroup with writing programs and planning activities for children aged 0-4 years old,” she said.

“Students have learnt they must consider the needs of diverse people in our community. They have become more aware of social issues.”

“I would like to acknowledge Jodie Hurrey, who is the teacher of this certificate. She has been instrumental in finding volunteering opportunities for the students and has a variety of skills which enables them to be able to cook for The Breakfast Club and also assist in the early childhood area,” Ms Niven said.

THE Moreton Bay Regional Prostate Cancer Support Group and Redcliffe Hospital Urology department will hold their annual fun run on August 1.

Participants will have the choice of a 10km run from Woody Point Jetty to Redcliffe Jetty (return), or a 5km run/walk.

Spokesman John Dowling said the run would raise money to support the Redcliffe Hospital Cancer Care Nurse and Dr Matt Roberts’ local immunotherapy research.

“Within the Redcliffe hospital there is a group of doctors and allied medical professionals dedicating long hours to operating and caring for patients with cancer,” he said. “Their efforts to provide the best medical services, from diagnosis, through treatment to recovery support know no limits and we can only watch in awe and wonder where all their vitality, mental and physical strength comes from: so remarkable. They dream of building ‘gold standard’ cancer treatment facilities here in Redcliffe, and why not?.”

Club lends a helping hand THE Education Service Association (ESA) women’s service club continues to help the community in more ways than one.

The Redcliffe-based club was founded in November 1981 by young mum Jenny Hendriks, sister Diane Northey and their friends.

Since then, it has sponsored a range of activities, fundraised for important causes in the community and provided a family friendly club for members. Activities include cent sales, fashion parades, art gallery outings and visits from guest speakers.

The association has also established the ESA Princess Quest for girls aged eight to 12 years old in an effort to raise funds for the Leukaemia Foundation Queensland and establish Queensland’s first Bone Marrow Transplant Unit.

Appeal for winter help STORY JODIE POWELL SOCKS, underwear and blankets top the wish list for the Chameleon Youth Housing Winter Appeal.

The appeal is also seeking warm clothing.

Chameleon Housing is a specialist homeless service catering for male and female residents aged 16 to 25, as well as young parenting families aged 18 to 25.

Chief Executive Officer Carmel Riethmuller said it had experienced a dramatic spike in calls for help since the onset of COVID-19. In 2018-19, the charity worked with 342 clients. In 2020-21, it supported 553.

Ms Riethmuller said the number of domestic and family violence referrals to Chameleon Housing rose 400 percent year on year and the number of referrals for families needing housing jumped 39 percent.

Chameleon Housing has been collating the data it reports to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare to compare the need for support pre-COVID19,

during COVID-19, and post COVID-19 to better respond to need.

“COVID has changed how we work. People are more vulnerable, more broken,” she said Ms Riethmuller said as the peninsula’s 24-hour service, Chameleon Housing fielded many calls from people in crisis.

“We’re getting emergency calls from people because there are no other services open,” she said. “We had one young man, aged 25, who was released from jail on a Friday afternoon when nothing was open.”

Chameleon House helped find him emergency accommodation, and then a more permanent solution, and worked with him to find employment, which he still has a year later.

STORY JODIE POWELL EVA Porter’s landscape architecture studio has flourished since she won the Moreton Bay Region Business Excellence and Innovation Awards Young Entrepreneur Award in 2018.

The landscape architect said winning the award opened up a world of opportunity and connections that helped Porter Designs grow beyond her dreams.

Ms Porter said turning to local experts allowed Porter Designs to make the most of opportunities and turn them into profit.

“No matter what I was doing, I couldn’t get any further – I was not earning any more income with the knowledge I had,” she explained.

“I engaged one of the awards sponsors (an accounting firm) and that really helped my business.”

Ms Porter said the accounting team went through her books and provided strategic advice to help her business thrive.

She also enlisted the help of a consultant she found through a local chamber of commerce to create her marketing strategy.

“That was super beneficial – my advice to other businesses would be to engage consultants to help you where you need it.”

While many businesses were hit hard by the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, Ms Porter experienced a couple of quiet weeks, but then since found people had a renewed enthusiasm for nature, which has benefitted Porter Designs.

“I’ve never had so much work,” Ms Porter said.

Event to focus on region’s agribusiness STORY KYLIE KNIGHT MORETON Bay Region Industry and Tourism will host a business event focused on showcasing and supporting the region’s agribusinesses next month.

The event titled Supporting Local Produce: The Future of Agribusiness in Moreton Bay will be held at Mercure Clear Mountain Lodge on August 19

STORY KYLIE KNIGHT NORTH Lakes Lions Club members have been busy crocheting blankets for residents at Arcare North Lakes Aged Care, giving them an extra layer of warmth and comfort this winter.

Lions member Carolyn Brown said volunteers answered the call to put their crochet needles to work, donating more than 30 blankets this winter.

Mrs Brown said they made two deliveries – one at the beginning of winter and another in June.

“I wanted to give quite a few to the people at Arcare because when we delivered the first lot, they needed more,” she said.

It follows a delivery of 15 last year.

Mrs Brown said she had been working with Arcare’s lifestyle co-ordinator to identify the residents who needed them and arranging distribution.

She has been crocheting for many years, picking up the skill as an adult.

“It relaxes you, when you just want to sit down and you don’t have to concentrate on anything − it’s just in your brain,” Mrs Brown said.

Members have made smaller blankets for those in wheelchairs and larger ones to go on beds.

Mrs Brown and her husband Alan have been members of North Lakes Lions since they moved to Murrumba Downs about four years ago. They had previously been members of a club on the Sunshine Coast.

CASEY Apiata is a young man on a mission to do all he can to ensure all his classmates have the chance to attend their school formal, selling a framed plastic bag for $500 in a bid to reduce the cost of tickets.

The Deception Bay State High School house captain Casey framed the Woolworths plastic shopping bag in 2017, when they were banned, thinking one day it might be worth something.

“We got rid of them and then I found one in my room, so I was like ‘I should frame it and see what happens in a couple years’,” Casey said.

“I thought I might get some money out if it and I have. Originally, I put it on Facebook Marketplace for $100 for a formal suit for me and an anonymous donor gave me enough money to buy a suit (and cover other formal expenses). He didn’t want to buy the bag, but then I got all these other offers.”

Rotary club closes 70 years on STORY KYLIE KNIGHT REDCLIFFE City Rotary Club has handed back its charter after 70 years of service to the community.

The final six members made the decision when they realised they could no longer form a board.

The club, founded in 1951 has a lasting legacy on the Redcliffe peninsula of which the final six and long-standing members Traven Searle, Bob Blanch, Pat Naidoo, Ralph Ruiter, Terry Rogers and John Denzin are proud.

All are former presidents and all have received Lions’

Dolphins News caught up with Bob Blanch, Pat Naidoo, Traven Searle and Ralph Ruiter to reflect on the club’s contribution.

“It’s been a hard decision, but we’ve been working hard for about four years to get people interested.

The demography of the community has changed and also the fact that we’re a dinner club, makes it hard for people to attend.

Lunch and breakfast clubs seem to be where Rotary is going,” Mr Searle said.

He said the COVID-19 pandemic had not helped.

The club provided the first car for the Blue Nursing Service; sponsored the First European Settlement Wall and Rotary Park; established Interact clubs at Redcliffe State High School and Southern Cross Catholic College; sponsored Redcliffe Community Men’s Shed; raising funds for charity through a golf day and Rotary calendars; and supporting Australian Rotary health and Rotary International Projects including student and cultural exchanges.

“Everyone still talks about that event,” he said.

He also recalls going to Cambodia and Sri Lanka to fit prosthetic limbs for

landmine victims.

The club is also behind Rotary Park at Redcliffe, and shade structures along the foreshore for people to sit and enjoy a picnic.

During the club’s last function it donated $62,000 to a variety of community

organisations.

While tangible outcomes have been rewarding, the friendships made in the process of doing good was the most important spinoff to those who remained until the end.

Pine Rivers Show returns with bang

Electrician Mick McKellar shows community spirit.

MARGATE Sparc Electrical and Airconditioning owner Mick McKellar has come to the rescue of the Deception Bay District Girls Guides.

A generous benefactor had donated a new dishwasher and stove, but the Guides could not afford to have them installed.

When Cr Sandra Ruck (Div 5) learned of the problem, she popped a post on a community Facebook page asking for help.

Within days, Mr McKellar had been tagged by a friend and offered to complete the work, as well as supplying and installing interconnected smoke detectors to meet new legislation requirements.

“It was just nice to be able

to help out. It’s not about the recognition – community spirit is what we base our business on,” he said.

Cr Ruck said Mr McKellar’s generosity was testament to community spirit.

“It was great to be able to help out our Deception Bay Girl Guides. I found out by accident they needed some electrical work done and didn’t have the money to employ an electrician,” Cr Ruck said.

Primed for night of laughs Join comedian Akmal Saleh at an Open Air Comedy Night, which is part of the Caboolture Festival program for 2021.

COMEDIAN Akmal Saleh remembers being obsessed with funny movies and listening to his favourite comics on vinyl as a child and it is this foundation he draws from in his own stand-up shows.

The popular statesman of the Australian comedy scene has been at it since the early 1990s, and will be the headline act at the free Open Air Comedy Night at Caboolture Town Square as part of the Caboolture Festival on August 22.

“I think I’d tried everything and failed and this (comedy) was the last thing. I developed it over the years … I loved watching it in films,” Saleh recalled.

“I was obsessed with it as a child. When my friends would go to see Star Wars, I went to see comedy films.”

When asked to name his favourites, he recalled the first time he heard Monty Python on vinyl. “It blew my mind. I could not believe grown men were making funny noises … there

was a real sense of silliness and joy,” Saleh said.

“When I was very young, I remember Abbott and Costello marathons that went for 8-9 hours.”

So, when it came to his first paid stand-up performance, he sought comfort in material he had enjoyed on a Steven Wright record that cost him 99 cents.

Saleh said it was full of brilliant one-liners he repeated on stage during that show in 1993 at Sydney Comedy Store. He did not have the confidence to rollout his own material at that point.

“I didn’t know every comedian also knew about it. I did 10 jokes in a row and one of the comedians said to me that he could hear the scratches on those jokes (a reference to scratches on a vinyl record),” he said.

“I got that buzz from those huge laughs and I thought ‘I want that again’.”

The realisation he could earn more doing stand-up for an hour than driving a taxi for 12 was also motivation.

It would take him another couple of years to earn the same big laughs with his own material, but he did it and has not looked back.

Since then, Saleh has featured in movies, on TV, in stand-up and talk shows, at festivals and more.

He is now one of Australia’s most respected, successful and accomplished comics who has the ability to deal with hot topics in a hilarious and non-offensive way.

“I’m still not sure I’m good at it, I’m still learning. It only takes your next bad show to remind you it’s so fragile,” he said.

Saleh said jokes were old as soon as he walked off stage and the challenge was to come up with new material.

“It’s like anything, learning an instrument, when you learn at first it’s hard but then you get good, and then you see other people who are really good and you know you have more work to do,” he said.

A challenging 18 months, during which shows have been cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, has made performers and audiences appreciate the chance to connect at a show.

Saleh’s shows this year have fortuitously dodged lockdowns and he has been able to perform in Adelaide, Melbourne, Perth and Brisbane.

“I’ve found the audience is much easier now, the choice of entertainment is limited.

Melbourne was unbelievable, normally it’s hard, but not this year,” he said He said audiences were keen for a night out and to have a good time.

“It’s an important part of being

human generally. People feel more relaxed after laughing for a while. All those endorphins are released,” he said.

Saleh said he was looking forward to the Caboolture gig, which will be hosted by comedian Ellen Briggs and include fellow comics Steve Allison, Ting Lim, Aaron Pratt and Jo Gowda.

“It’s that buzz of talking to a crowd for one hour or so and holding their attention and making them laugh,” he said.

“Whatever joy they get from my performance, I probably get more joy from performing it. It’s like a drug.”

He still gets nervous and it is during those moments, he sometimes questions his career choice. When he gets off stage and he has had a ‘killer night’ he is left with no doubt.

The Open Air Comedy Night will be delivered by Moreton Bay Region Industry and Tourism (MBRIT) and supported by Sit Down Comedy Club and strategic partner Moreton Bay Regional Council.

• 500g Mahi Mahi fillets, skin off • 2 stalks lemongrass, finely sliced • 30g ginger, grated • 1 clove garlic, peeled • 1tbls sesame oil • 1 red chilli, julienned • 1 cup pomelo flesh (or ruby grapefruit) • ¼ cup shredded coconut, lightly toasted • 100g snake beans, finely sliced into discs

• 75g roasted cashews • ½ bunch coriander • ½ cup Vietnamese mint • 1 kaffir lime leaf, finely shredded • 50ml lime juice • 50ml fish sauce • 25g palm sugar, grated • 1 cup finely sliced golden shallots (or ¼ cup store bought crispy shallots) • ½ cup vegetable oil (for frying)

Method

1.

In a food processor, blend the lemongrass, ginger, garlic and sesame oil to a fine paste. Brush this over the mahi mahi fillets, cover and refrigerate for two hours.

2.

Seal the mahi mahi fillets in a hot pan until coloured, transfer to a baking tray and roast in a 180C oven for 10 minutes or until just cooked through. Allow to cool.

3.

Whisk together the fish sauce, lime juice and palm sugar until the palm sugar has dissolved.

4.

Fry the sliced shallots in the vegetable oil over a medium heat until crispy and golden. Drain on paper towel.

5.

Flake the cooled fish into rough pieces and mix with the chilli, pomelo, coconut, snake beans, cashews, herbs and lime leaf.

6.

Dress with the fish sauce dressing and divide between four serving bowls.

• 2 eggs + 2 yolks • 75g frozen raspberries • 125g sour cream • 2tsp castor sugar • ½ tsp vanilla paste • 1 punnet fresh raspberries

In a food processor, blend the Nutworks Apple and Cinnamon Boost until it resembles coarse breadcrumbs. Pour in the butter and blend to combine.

Press 1tbls of mixture into 12 small cheesecake tins with removable bases. Refrigerate until firm.

3.

Blend the cream cheese, sugar, eggs, yolks and frozen raspberries in a food processor until smooth. Divide between the 12 tins.

Bake at 150C for 15 minutes.

Refrigerate until well chilled, remove from tins and decorate with fresh raspberries and chunks of Nutworks Raspberry Crumble Boost.

During the festival, there will be a number of changes to carpark, road and traffic conditions. Please abide by all traffic control and parking signs.

Free shuttle bus The free festival shuttle bus will be operating from the Pelican Park satellite carpark and Kippa-Ring Train Station on a continuous loop. All buses are pram and wheelchair-friendly.

KEEPING chickens is good for the soul, garden and kitchen, according to ‘The Chicken Lady’ Helen South.

She has been around chickens her whole life but has been running her hobby/business for five years.

Ms South said chooks were great companions for people of all ages, but there were a few things to consider.

Once you have the green light, you need to set up a safe, comfortable and secure home that protects them from wild birds and other creatures including dogs, cats and snakes.

“They will attract wild birds

and rodents. It’s good to have a system in place to avoid that,” Ms South said.

“Wild birds give chickens diseases, so it’s best to keep the two separate.”

Use small-gauge wire and ensure nothing can squeeze under it. A thick layer of clean sandpit sand is the perfect base because it is absorbent and easy to clean.

Ms South recommends using wood shavings in nesting boxes because they are absorbent, warm and will reduce odours.

“It’s three-ply versus oneply toilet paper. If you use hay or straw, it breeds bacteria

and smells because it holds moisture,” she says.

Chickens like a safe, dark space to lay their eggs. You will only need one or two for up to six chickens as they tend to prefer sharing boxes.

When it comes to feeding chooks, you cannot go past a good quality laying mash and kitchen scraps including vegetable peelings, rice and pasta. Do not give them avocado.

In winter, bump up their protein intake to ensure they have what they need to stay healthy and warm. This can include soy beans, raw liver, or anything

with high protein levels.

Many chickens will ‘go off the lay’ in winter, but feeding them finely chopped cow liver for a couple of weeks, will have them producing again.

They also need fresh water provided in water feeders to avoid contamination.

Adding 30ml of apple cider vinegar to 1 litre every now and then is good for them.

Giving hens plenty of room to move is important for their wellbeing and to promote egg production.

“The happier your chickens are, the better they lay, so free range is the best possible scenario for a chicken’s life,” she says.

Ms South said the eggs tasted better because they were fresh and free from human interference.

Eggs are not the only useful byproduct of keeping chickens.

The woodshavings and manure are good for your garden but are too potent to use without being watered down.

“Put them in a big drum and fill it with water, then use the water on your garden beds,” Ms South said.

Hooked On Fishing and Boating Fishing

THIS edition, we’ll look at different categories of lures and their intended use.

Broadly grouped, there are three main categories of lures, hardbodies, soft plastics and metals, with each having subcategories in them. Going forward, I’ll talk in broad terms regarding these, as going into full detail could fill a book.

Metals: Generally speaking, this is the most basic lure type manufactured from, as the name suggests, metal.

Commonly they are in a chrome, mirror or highly polished finish, however, a myriad of finishes exist. The intention of these is to imitate an injured or panicked, fleeing baitfish with plenty of reflective flash to attract a hungry predator’s attention. Produced in a range of sizes and designs, the most basic versions are designed to be cast and retrieved FAST as fast as you can wind. You’ll never outrun actively feeding fish by winding too fast.

Basic straight slugs travel straight through the water and the colour or reflectivity produces the strike. Retrieval techniques can vary. Cast out, let sink and retrieve from deeper water, gradually rising as they get closer to you, straight back just under the surface, or skipped fast along the surface to imitate fleeing baitfish.

Some metals have twists, flat areas or holes incorporated into their design which impart some action and vibration as they travel through the water.

These can be straight-retrieved as above, but they have the

added option of a slower or intermittent erratic retrieval as their design may allow a fluttering action as it sinks.

This will add vibration and flash, but it is also important to keep the lure in the water for longer, giving undecided fish more time to decide to attack.

In the majority of situations, speed is your friend. Metals travelling too slowly through the water, look like a hunk of metal travelling through the water. Speed gives them their reflectivity, splash and in some cases, even a bubble trail behind them, which all combine to imitate a meal for hungry predators.

Remember: Talk to old people, they know stuff you don’t. Talk to young people, they know stuff you don’t.

FISHING REPORT • Once again, healthy fishing all round at the moment with plenty of baitfish around the peninsula and bay, and the great condition of the fish reflects this.

• Flathead fishing very well.

• Tailor up to 55cm being caught.

• The odd jewfish being landed as well.

• Tailor off Woody Point jetty, off all the rocky points and inshore reefs around the peninsula, Ted Smout platform, Pine River mouth and particularly in Bramble Bay. • Plenty of squire and snapper on the rocky points, inshore reefs and the odd one off the jetties.

• Bream on the beaches, jetties, rocky points and on the inshore reefs.

• Bream, flathead and some whiting in Hays Inlet, the Pine River, Scarborough Spit and foreshore, and the mouth of the canals.

• Diver whiting off Scarborough into Deception Bay, and across to the Cockle Banks.

• Good numbers of squid in all the usual haunts.

• Snapper and tuskies on the artificial reefs inside Moreton.

• Remember we’re in closed season for snapper until 11.59pm on August 15.

ALL of our lives have been impacted by COVID-19. The various lockdowns and rules during lockdowns have affected all activities and this includes recreational fishing.

Where lockdowns have included complete bans on recreational fishing, the impacts are obvious. Bans on recreational fishing have however not been commonly used across jurisdictions. As an example, 92 per cent of US jurisdictions kept recreational fishing open, asking anglers to always practice social distancing, but enacting a variety of other management responses aiming to allow the activity and minimise the risk.

In Queensland, recreational fishing for food has (more or less) been identified as an essential activity during lockdowns – albeit with movement restrictions. As such, our response shares commonalities with Texas and British Colombia (Canada).

When recreational fishing has been still allowed, there has also been significant changes.

While the impacts of COVID-19 on recreational fishing have not been assessed in Queensland, emerging research in Western Australia and overseas sheds light on the range of impacts.

Overall, current research suggests an increase in recreational fishing activity adjacent to urban areas.

To summarise that work, impacts due to social distancing were greater for avid fishers, who were only permitted to fish with their family. Impacts due to travel restrictions were greater for metropolitan-based fishers, who were unable to travel to regional centres during the early phases of COVID-19 due to State Government imposed travel restrictions. Impacts due to personal decision to isolate were greater for fishers 60 years or older, who presumably stayed home and had genuine concern for their health.

DR DAZZA although angling effort and fish consumption appeared to decline during the early phases of the pandemic, approximately 21 per cent of the anglers who responded to a survey identified themselves as new entrants who had begun or resumed fishing in that time.

Motivations to fish during the pandemic suggest that free time, importance to mental and physical health, and desires for self-sufficiency caused some anglers to fish more. Like the sentiments of many anglers I have spoken to in Queensland, those in Ontario expressed a desire for more clear and consistent communication from government regarding recreational fishing rules during the pandemic.

In Denmark during the early part of the pandemic, an increase of 20 per cent in the sales of mandatory fishing licences suggested an increase in recreational fishing participation. In more detailed analysis, it was identified that participants were younger, more likely to live in urban areas, less experienced in fishing, and stated angling as a less important hobby compared to others.

While some of the effects of COVID-19 on recreational fishing are probably obvious, collectively they pose some further interesting questions.

Will those that commenced or returned to recreational fishing because of the pandemic continue to fish when other forms of outdoor recreation and socialising become less regulated on a consistent basis?

Will COVID-19 increase recreational fishing participation in the medium and long-term over and above what was expected without it?

CAPTAIN’S CALL BACK-to-back away trips took us up to Rockhampton to take on the Capras.

With a few former Dolphins players in their team, we knew they would turn up to play.

Poor discipline and sloppy defence saw Capras open the scoring and get off to a good start.

Resilience has been a real feature of our season this year and again we hung in there and hit back straight away.

We went into half time up 18-6 but we were pretty disappointed in how we were playing.

We made a few adjustments and came out and took a 30-6 lead which we should of ran away with.

However we finished the half in a less than desirable fashion and Capras staged a comeback, falling just short at 30-24.

We now sit in tied second position and in a really good spot to secure a home semi-final.

With five weeks of the regular season to go, we still have a heap of improvement in our team which is exciting.

Next Sunday we play Mackay in a home game (venue to be confirmed).

THE Kepu twins have played rugby league together since they were in under-15s, progressing to the Warriors academy system and making the journey across the ditch to learn what they can from the Dolphins this year.

Each is aware of where the other twin is on the field and there’s a ‘magic’ that happens, when they find their rhythm.

Lingi has scored twice – his first in his second Cup game against Wynnum and

his second against the Jets at Quilpie.

Kina scored his first Intrust Super Cup try for the Dolphins against the Capras in the side’s 30-24 win in Rockhampton on July 25. Before this year, the 18-year-olds from the southside of Auckland had never lived away from home, let alone in a different country.

It has been a big adjustment, made easier by doing it together and with the support of Dolphins’ Football Operations Manager Steve Crawford and his partner Roimata and their teammates.

“Meeting new people is

the best part about it, especially Roimata and Steve Crawford. They’ve taken us into their home – it’s just like helps especially being away from home. We’re grateful for everything.”

Lingi agrees: “If I didn’t meet Roimata and Sticksy (Crawford), I probably would have gone back home by now”.

Lingi was a late call-up for his debut for the Intrust Super Cup side against Norths. “What hit me the most is I saw my number, my Dolphin number. I went home after that game and thought ‘wow I’m number 790’,” he said.

It was not long before

Kina earned his own Dolphin number (799).

Both credit Tyson Cleal for helping them improve their game, while Shane Pumipi has offered life experience advice.

The twins are keen to play in the NRL, but know that they have plenty to learn and they are in the right place to hone their skills.

“I’d like to play some more games with Cup, because before the experience comes along I want to learn more. If I hit the next level, I’ll be able to play naturally. Just to be able to represent my family too.

That would be one of the big ones,” Lingi said.

DOUG Klein produced a “fairy-tale” finish to the $60,000 Hutchinson Builders Redcliffe Pro-Am (July 15-16) which is now being targeted by players for next year.

Klein, who works at Redcliffe Golf Club’s pro shop, beat Nathan Barbieri by one shot to win $10,788, the biggest payday of his career.

The 23-year-old had a superb first round 63 to lead by two on his home course and in windy conditions on day two had 68 for 131 total.

Barbieri’s second day 64 closed the gap to one shot, but the man from Monash Country Club in Sydney could not find another birdie over the last five holes.

That gave Klein his second win in four tournaments and third of the year having also won the Virginia Pro-Am in April and Tin Can Bay Pro-Am on July 6. He also tied for fourth at last week’s Coolangatta

‘Weight’ almost over for Charisma THE final countdown has begun for Narangba resident Charisma Amoe-Tarrant who will make her Olympic debut on Monday.

The 22-year-old is going for gold in the Women’s 87kg at Tokyo, three years after winning silver for Nauru, at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Though born in Naura, Amoe-Tarrant has lived in Australia since she was 13

and chose the green and gold after striking silver.

Amoe-Tarrant, who trains at the Cougars Weightlifting Club in Chandler, was selected for the Australian team at the 2019 Pacific Games and won a bronze medal in the F87kg class.

There followed an eightmonth break due to the COVID lockdown last year but she returned for the

“I’ve not been in quite this situation before,” said Smith, “but I’m really excited about it.

“Being a part of the Olympic squad is a fantastic feeling. It’s something I didn’t think we ever had a chance of doing growing up. Any

chance to represent Australia or wear the green and gold, I’ll put my hand up. I’m super pumped.”

Smith, who lived in Bray Park and worked at Redcliffe RSL when younger, joins Marc Leishman as Australia’s selections for the men’s tournament from July 29-August 1.

Leaving his Florida home on Sunday, Smith flew to Tokyo and started practising on Monday for the Olympic stroke play tournament at The Kasumigaseki Country Club.

The ex-Pine Rivers State High School student has not been to the course before but has played plenty of golf in Japan and Asia.

“The courses can be really tough with tight fairways, but in great condition, some of the best courses you can play.

“Leish and I are really good together and we’ll try to treat this as a normal tournament.”

World ranked 28, Smith has been in fine form on

Queensland Senior Championships and made every lift to win the 87kg+ title.

Amoe-Tarrant had a total of 257kg and won the category by 100kg with her best results across snatch, clean and jerk and total weights.

The Tokyo Olympics will be a far cry from the day, when aged just 11, that Amoe-Tarrant started weightlifting. She was, at that time, a discus and shot

put athlete.

But the love of weightlifting was growing and Amoe-Tarrant represented Naura at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, finishing tied for fourth in Women’s 90kg snatch class.

However, she completed all three clean and jerk lifts, with a best of 142kg, for a 243kg total to take the Medal hope - Charisma Amoe-Tarrant silver medal.

back to where I’ve come from. What started as a dream is now my job,” Smith said. “I set out to be the best golfer I can. Now I’m playing against the best golfers on the best tour in the world!”

But he loves returning to this region to see family,

friends and for the annual Cameron Smith Junior Classic at Wantima.

“I really hope to get back to Australia and maybe play some golf,” he said, “I’ve not seen my family for about two years. I always look forward to coming back.”

Australia’s softball medal hopes hinged on Monday’s final Opening Round match against Mexico.

Redcliffe State High School teacher Chelsea Forkin and ex-Redcliffe player Jade Wall were hoping to help Aussie Spirit to victory and a place in Tuesday’s bronze medal match.

Teagan Micah, who grew up in Redcliffe, was due to be in the Australia’s squad facing the US yesterday, looking to secure a place in the quarter-finals.

The former Redcliffe State High School student made her Olympic playing debut in the Matildas’ 4-2 loss against a powerful Swedish team, at the weekend.

They probably needed a win or at least a point to reach the quarters as one of the top two in Pool G or one of the best third-placed teams in the Games.

Redcliffe-born Kaylee McKeown, a big hope for gold in the pool, is tomorrow scheduled to start her 200m Backstroke campaign in the heats from 9.08pm.

McKeown made her first Olympic final on Monday with second in the 100m Backstroke semi-final.

Bronwen Knox, whose water polo career began and is still going at Albany Creek Leisure Centre, helped Australia beat Canada 8-5 in their first match at the weekend.

Knox and her colleagues were looking to maintain that start against Netherlands on Monday and Spain on Friday at 8.50pm.

Adams misses final shootout PAUL Adams, who lives in North Lakes, missed the shootout for a top six place – and chance of a medal – by just three shots in the Olympic Skeet Shooting.

Adams was equal first after day one and the first 50 discs, but slipped back to finish with 119 (25, 25, 23, 22, 24) from 125 and 21st place overall.

In a tight competition, the top two qualifiers scored 124/125 and six finished on 122 and went into a shootoff for the last three places.

Lakers at the Masters STORY NICK CROCKFORD THE Lakers are about to add another milestone to a remarkable year.

Next month the NorthLakes-based softball club will have its biggest representation at the Queensland Masters.

Three women’s teams and one men’s side are among the 172 entries with matches at grounds in Redcliffe and Caboolture.

It comes after Lakers was named Redcliffe Leagues Softball Association 2021 Club of the Year and Junior Club of the Year.

All highlights for an organisation which almost folded, but has now become one of the region’s biggest, drawing players from as far as Brisbane and Ipswich.

“Being named club of the year was not only due to our success on the field,” said treasurer Rachel Leaver. “It was also our commitment to the community.”

It is a far cry from 2013, three years after Lakers began, when there were fears it may not survive.

Rachel Leaver was among those who helped turn fortunes around to the extent it was named the Redcliffe association’s Club of the Year in 2016, 2019 and 2021.

It was recognition for the club’s success on and off the field with a commitment to Moreton Bay Regional Council Active Kids holiday sessions, North Lakes Sports Club advisory committee, field improvements and junior skills development.
