WENDY Heath was “thinking of doing adventure things” when she discovered Australia’s longest charity rally.

Now the countdown has begun for Wendy and son Ronan Heath-Bourke, who both lived in Redcliffe for many years, ahead of the 2021 Great Endeavour Rally Simpson Desert Adventure (August 5-14).

The sold-out rally has 61 teams, covering 4000km in

three states over 10 days in remote parts of Australia. raising funds for the Endeavour Foundation, which helps those with intellectual disability.

Wendy and Ronan, who now live in Burpengary East, were aiming to raise $5000 but now have $7735 after getting $1800 from a day at Bunnings Rothwell and $2000 from Belvedere Social Club at Woody Point.

“Ronan has had a lot of challenges and we’re doing the rally to support people

like him,” Ms Heath said.

“Young people want to live their best life and have the same opportunities everyone has. Ronan likes adventure and travel. This will be a great social experience for him.”

Ronan was born with Down Syndrome and had leukaemia when he was three, spending two months in intensive care.

He went to school on the peninsula and in 2019, his senior year at Redcliffe Special School, was a student leader.

At the recent Special Olympics Queensland Games, Ronan won gold the 50m backstroke, in a personal best, silver in the 50m breaststroke and bronze in 100m freestyle.

In the desert adventure, teams drive from St George to Tibooburra (NSW), Mungerannie (SA), Birdsville and finish in Charleville.

WHEN Renee Taylor steps onto the field at Oi Seaside Park on July 25, she will add Olympian to her sporting resume, which includes Redcliffe Hockey Club.

The 25-year-old spent two years in Redcliffe’s Under 11s before going to Kedron Wavell, Commercial and now the Hockeyroos.

Taylor is one of eight Olympic debutants in Australia’s squad in Tokyo which faces Argentina, Spain, New Zealand, Japan and China in Pool A.

JADE Wall, who still registers to play for Redcliffe’s Open Women’s softball team, says the Aussie Spirit team will not be phased by history when they open the Olympic program on July 21 against Japan.

Australia has won three bronze medals and a silver in the last four Olympic Games which have featured softball, which returns in Tokyo after 12 years.

“I think we are used to having the history behind us and we’ll be using that, for sure,” she said. “We’re only here for the gold.”

KAYLEE MC KE OW N REDCLIFFE-BORN Kaylee McKeown is one of Australia’s biggest hopes to land gold in the Olympic swimming pool.

The 19-year-old, who was at Australian Crawl in Burpengary but is now at USC Spartans on the Sunshine Coast, smashed the world 100m backstroke record in the trials.

“It should be a really interesting (in Tokyo) – the 100m backstroke field and the 200m will be red hot,” McKeown said.

CHELSEA FO RK IN REDCLIFFE State High School teacher Chelsea Forkin says pushing the Tokyo Olympics back 12 months, due to COVID, has been a blessing in disguise.

The 31-year-old says it has given the Aussie Spirt team more time to gel, practise and check out opponents.

“We’ve been working really hard in the background to try and win it all. We don’t want to accept anything less,” she said. “If we get silver or bronze we’ll be happy. But we want gold.”

What can cause sciatica to flare?

Sciatica is a debilitating and painful condition involving the sciatic nerve, which travels from the spine to your lower extremities. Boost for wildlife and waterways STORY JODIE POWELL KOALAS, other native animals and the region’s waterways w i l l be the major beneficiaries of two new management plans adopted by Moreton Bay Regional Council.

The Green Infrastructure Portfolio Asset Management Plan oversees the region’s $11.7 million in infrastructure that allows wildlife to move safely around built-up areas and improves road safety, while the Waterways Portfolio Asset Management Plan outlines how Council will manage natural and constructed waterways in coming years.

Moreton Bay is home to more than 400 wildlife assets that fall under the green infrastructure plan, including fauna escape poles, refuge poles, fencing, underpasses, nest boxes and road stencils to alert motorists.

The plan said Council had

GREEN ASSETS monitored the performance of select green infrastructure sites since 2016 and found a strong correlation between green infrastructure and successful fauna crossings.

It said on average, there had been approximately a 70 percent reduction in fauna collisions, “representing a very positive result”.

Sites at Endeavour Boulevard and Discovery Dve, North Lakes recorded a 100 percent drop in collisions with wildlife during the observation period.

Under the green infrastructure management plan, Council will continue to build new green infrastructure, with $11 million earmarked to be spent over the next 10 years, and maintain the capital renewal budget, which is about $200,000 a year.

The region is home to about 988 linear kilometres of natural waterways supported by assets that improve and protect their health by reducing erosion and sedimentation and allowing fish to swim freely through them.

Riparian zones are critical to the health of waterways, improving water quality through filtration, provid-

ing habitat and reducing erosion.

The plan said it was imperative Council took a more proactive approach to managing waterway assets including planned, preventative and routine maintenance.

“The recommended funding adjustments, both for capital renewal/replacement and routine and planned maintenance, will allow Council to achieve its strategic asset management objectives,” it stated.

Race steeped in history JETTY 2 JETTY has come a long way since the first race from Rotary Park to Woody Point organised by the Moreton Bay Road Runners 35 years ago.

Andy Almond from MBRR said the race was embedded in the club’s history.

“The club started in 1985 and in 1986 they picked up on the great success of fun runs,” Mr Almond said.

In 1986, there were 120 entrants. This year’s race will have more than 4000.

Green light for hub STORY KYLIE KNIGHT IT has been 10 years ‘in the making’ but a housing and homelessness services hub at Redcliffe is one of the key projects to be delivered as part of a new State Government stimulus package.

The SEQ Community Stimulus Program (SEQCSP) will fund 24 projects across the region, totalling $13.8 million and creating 226 jobs.

The $3 million hub will be home to The Breakfast Club of Redcliffe and a second service provider in a bid to centralise support for the homeless. It will be built at the Redcliffe-Scarborough Pensioners Hall at the corner of Portwood St and Oxley Ave, Redcliffe.

The existing building will be demolished to make away for a purpose-built facility.

Moreton Bay Regional Council successfully applied for the funding, with the strong support of State Member for Redcliffe Yvette D’Ath. Mayor Peter Flannery said he was pleased to see action in helping the growing number of people experiencing homelessness, exacerbated by COVID-19.

“For nearly a decade we have been lobbying for state and federal funding to get a solution in Redcliffe and Caboolture. I think having a local politician like Yvette D’Ath in a portfolio like health is a real game-changer for us, in terms of getting the Queensland Cabinet to understand our local issues,” Mayor Flannery said.

“Comparing ABS Census data from 2011 and 2016 shows a dramatic increase of 57.5 per cent in the number of persons experiencing homelessness within the Moreton Bay Region.”

Mrs D’Ath said the project would also support the community and construction industry jobs.

“I am excited to have secured this vital funding which will support a number of projects in our community, including the construction of the Moreton Bay Housing and Homelessness Services Hub,” she said. “I squealed I was so excited. It gave me goosebumps to think we’re finally going to do this. I want to acknowledge the community that’s advocated for this for a long time.”

Cr Karl Winchester (Div 5) said there was a need to provide meals and accommodation to help people get back on their feet.

“The building design will have dining capacity for 100 people, office space for the specialist service provider and a commercial kitchen and suitable amenities like toilets, showers and carparking,” he said.

“The state funding allows us to redevelop the site and represents a major breakthrough for homelessness support on the peninsula and across the region.”

The Breakfast Club of Redcliffe Chairperson Michelle Gilchrist said the organisation had been helping homeless and vulnerable people in the com-

munity since 2003, when the need emerged.

“It’s extremely exciting because it’s been a long time coming,” she said.

Ms Gilchrist said the new hub would not change what the organisation was doing, but would “give us a location where we can be in one place and provide the resources that are needed in regard to meal provision and to help people in need”.

Design is still being finalised, but the facility will have shower and laundry facilities, a locker system, mail services, internet and phone charging capability.

Helping hand for people in crisis A HOUSING crisis is putting the squeeze on the finances of many Deception Bay families, a leading support organisation believes.

Deception Bay Neighbourhood Centre Program co-ordinator Elise Barton said the challenging housing market had seen a rise in the number of people reaching out for help.

“Deception Bay is in a housing crisis – there’s nothing available and nothing affordable,” Ms Barton said. “It’s COVID – rent is going up.

“People are being moved out of their rentals because owners are moving out of their houses and into their investment properties.”

Ms Barton said the centre supported clients to get into housing, actively working with services to find homes in the private rental market, but also easing the burden on finances with practical support such as non-perishable food and basics such as blankets and socks.

She said as well as supporting people who wanted accommodation, the centre received visits from the Stand Up Step Out (SUSO) bus every Thursday, so those in need could access hot showers and laundry facilities and the Quihn Nurse Health Bus every second Thursday.

They also make up packs for people who are homeless, with items such as socks, a reusable water bottle, tea, coffee and food, and notebooks and pens so they can keep track of appointments. Ms Barton said the centre was grateful for donations of goods such as tinned food with ring-pulls because clients often did not have access to can openers, new blankets, socks and single sachets of tea, coffee and milk.

“I just really want to thank the council and the State Government for this opportunity. Our volunteers have worked so hard, they’re so excited to see this happening and they will keep doing what they do,” she said.

The organisation and council are still working through the plan for a temporary location while the new hub is being built, but Ms Gilchrist said her team would make it work and minimise disruption. The hub and the other 23 projects are required to be deVisit dbnc.org.au livered by June 30, 2024.

Milestone marks service

THE Deception Bay Gem and Allied Crafts Club has been granted a new lease by Moreton Bay Regional Council, subject to securing funding for a planned expansion.

The club has leased facilities at the Progress Park Sports Fields in Old Bay Road since 2008 and lodged an Improvement Works Application with Council, flagging its hopes of building an extension to create extra space.

Under Council’s Community Leasing Improvement Works and Area Amendments Policy, if an improvement increases a lease area by more than 20 percent of the original area, lease renewal must be considered at a General Meeting of Council.

The Deception Bay Gem and Allied Crafts Club’s planned extension would increase its lease area by 54 percent.

STORY NICK CROCKFORD THIRTY-five years ago tomorrow, one of the longest running and most active community groups in this area held its first meeting.

It was on July 15, 1986 that Mango Hill Progress Association (MHPA) first met, when the village had no town water, sewerage or sealed roads − and a fraction of today’s population.

Since then, MHPA’s volunteers have worked tirelessly in their community and for their community – with significant results.

Laurence Christie, a founding committee member and President since 1992, said building a sense of community spirit and creating trust had helped form important partnerships.

Over 35 years that has included: • MHPA was among the groups advocating for the new railway line to Redcliffe. It also backed

moves for the new Mango Hill State High School, worked for four lanes on Anzac Ave to improve traffic and saved the mango trees on Anzac Ave. • It is now close to gaining a second exit onto Anzac Ave via Lamington Rd (work will start soon) and connecting Chelsmford Rd and Kinsellas Rd West.

• MHPA is also pushing ‘vigorously’ for a fire station to be built in North Lakes.

• MHPA organises the Christmas Carols and Anzac Day ceremonies, skate nights, holds monthly community meetings and runs special events such as the Pine Rivers Festivals of the 1980s and ‘90s, Mango Hill Anzac Centenary Festival (2015), flood clean-up (2015) and centenary of the World War I Armistice (2018).

• Danzy Buchanan Park – Pine Rivers Shire Council gave MHPA the chance to plan the layout of

the park, named after a former farmer and has planted every tree.

• It also helped plan and get funding for the tennis court (1990), basketball court (1996) and lighting, resurfacing and upgrades for the community hall (2020).

• For 10 years MHPA lobbied for the 20m wide green belt which links Mango Hill and North Lakes. In 1996 it was given a weekend to present its case. The association did and was successful.

• One of MHPA’s most used functions is enabling residents to advocate through the association to Moreton Bay Regional Council and governments with ideas and feedback on major issues and community concerns.

MHPA meetings are held each month, on Wednesdays, at the community hall. Everyone is welcome.

ORGANISERS of an exhibition on the beach at Scarborough that was postponed due to the recent COVID-19 lockdown plan to stage it later this year.

The exhibition, organised by contemporary art group Carte Blanche, takes place over a four-hour period on the sand at Scarborough when the tide is at its lowest, giving artists maximum space to work.

Trudy Stephens from Carte Blanche said the postponement was disappointing, but the safest thing to do.

“Unfortunately we had to postpone the event as it was the day after our lockdown was lifted and vulnerable people were warned not to go out or travel,” she said.

Ms Rizzo will appear on the Seafood Cooking Stage (presented by USC) on July 31 at 12.30pm, where she will prepare poached Humpty Doo Barramundi with a spiced pumpkin and cucumber salad.

“I thought I would do a sweet dish as well. I was just talking to Matt Golinski about my microwave meringue. I’ve got a lovely twist on an Eaton mess with some beautiful Luvaberry berries and some Little White Goat Cheese freeze-dried goats cheese.

Fingers crossed it works,” she said.

Her approach is to keep it simple and inspire some magic in home kitchens.

“If you do lack confidence in the kitchen, come along to the festival, pick up a few tips from us chefs,” Ms Rizzo said.

MAKING toast and coffee for her mother as a young child, using hot water from the tap, is Dominique Rizzo’s earliest memory of ‘cooking’ but she remembers feeling proud – a feeling the chef still has today when she whips up something special.

Ms Rizzo is pa r tic ularly proud to showcase lo-

cal produce in a way that inspires other chefs and everyday cooks to follow suit.

She will be aiming to do just that, when she appears at the Moreton Bay Food + Wine Festival precinct.

The festival is on July 31 and August 1 at Apex Park, Woody Point.

“I would say my style of cooking is rustic and very much recipes for the people, so everyone can cook with everyday ingredients,” Ms Rizzo said.

“I’m not a fancy chef, not even for myself cooking at home. I love stuff that is practical, that people can relate to and look at and go ‘I could make that’.”

She is also keen to teach people about the bounty of produce close to home.

“I feel so honoured to live in this area and just to be able to have produce that is literally fingertips away and so close to the city,” she said.

“I think this is what people maybe don’t realise and why festivals like the Moreton Bay Food + Wine Festival are so fantastic. It gives people that may not have the knowledge of local pro-

Mr McLeod said there was a growing desire to understand ‘the rhythms of the seasons’ and when different produce was in plentiful supply.

So, what does he like to cook in winter? “At this time of the year, it’s brassica season so I would love to take things like silverbeet, cavalonero, leafy greens and I would braise them down with some onions, garlic, anchovies and a little bit of chicken stock and cook them down and you get this flavour bomb and nutritional powerhouse.

“The days of allowing ourselves to have a 200g piece of protein for lunch and then for dinner is a luxury we can’t afford anymore. The heart of your plate, the majority of your plate, should be plants.

This cook doesn’t seek to impress, this cook seeks to delight and cook food that has a postcode.”

He said events such as

the Tastes of Moreton Bay program and Moreton Bay Food + Wine Festival were vital in raising awareness and ensuring there was a next generation of farmer.

“There are confronting statistics like the average age of a farmer, just over 100 years ago, was 21. The average age of a farmer in Australia today is in the mid-60s. So, there’s a whole raft of ethical and moral reasons why we need to use it or we’ll lose it,” he said.

ALASTAIR McLeod has called the Moreton Bay Region home for eight years but reckons he has only just scratched the surface, when it comes to unearthing the diversity of produce grown and farmed here.

He is thoroughly enjoying the culinary treasure hunting experience and is looking forward to sharing what he has discovered during the Tastes of Moreton Bay Program.

Mr McLeod is hosting the sold-out Samford Harvest dinner in the barn on the farm at Loop Growers, Draper, next month, but will also take the stage at the Moreton Bay Food + Wine Festival precinct.

The event is on July 31 and August 1 at Apex Park, Woody Point.

“I am not surprised by it but when you do scratch the surface, there is a prodigious panoply of produce available in our own backyard,” he said.

“It comes from the whole notion, the whole idea that you cannot make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear.

“The heart of good cooking is the ingredients, so it makes sense to inform yourself. That has to be the

narrative of our cooking, to know where our produce has come from.

“It will taste better, we will have tread a little bit lighter on this earth and because you know the producer you’re less likely to waste. Statistics say we throw away a third of everything we buy. If I know the person who’s grown the mushrooms, I feel a sense of duty, of obligation not to waste.”

He cited Nick and Brydie Holliday at Belvedere Farm, Cedarton; Jacki Hinchey at Blue Dog Farm, Mt Mee; Madi Leicester at Samford Valley Mushrooms as examples of passionate local producers with a focus on quality.

“There is more than enough to keep this cook happy. If you’re buying from people who are growing from a regenerative, restorative, organic and biodynamic way, you will eat well and that is so important,” Mr McLeod said.

“The spirit of our age is not cooking dishes with 11 different elements – there’s no correlation between how tricky something is and how delicious something is.

Nathan’s riding like the wind STORY KYLIE KNIGHT NATHAN McDowell not only cycled from Noosa to Redcliffe earlier this year, he also cycled for the entire month of May to raise money for children with cerebral palsy.

Completing both challenges has pushed him to the limit as he faces his own health battles.

The 30-year-old was diagnosed with Pelizaeus-Merzbacher disease (PMD) more than 10 years ago and embarked on Nathan’s Big Ride from Noosa to Redcliffe in March to raise awareness of the condition, and money to research a cure and secure his future.

PMD is a condition that

affects the central nervous system and is associated with abnormalities of the white matter of the brain and spinal cord. Mr McDowell said he was one of only a handful of people to live as long as he has.

He is also legally blind, has cerebral palsy, spina bifida, attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD).

His efforts have been supported by Holistic Horizons Disability Support Services Queensland at Margate.

In May, he raised more than $1000 while taking part in The Extra Mile fundraiser for children with cerebral palsy.

His support worker Mat-

thew Bell said Mr McDowell set a goal of 200km, achieving 120km due to medical appointments and illness. His team achieved the target.

In the lead-up to and during his big ride from Noosa to Redcliffe in March, he raised more than $31,000. He donated 10 per cent to Leukodystrophy Australia, which is a not-for-profit charity that connects people with rare genetic diseases and funds research. The balance will be used to fund Mr McDowell’s ongoing care and secure his future.

Now, he is having a break from riding and focusing on his health, while his bicycle is serviced.

Top honour for dynamic duo REDCLIFFE Bridge Club has awarded life membership to two of its members in recognition of their commitment to the group.

Clontarf’s Sandra Routley and Scarborough’s Helen Chapman received the honour at the club’s Annual General Meeting on June 14.

Ms Routley joined the club in 1986.

She has achieved playing honours in various competitions and has served in management committee roles from 2011-12 and 2016-17 and while she was Vice President in 2012, she had a lead role in the relocation of the club and establishment of the current club premises at Irene St, Redcliffe.

He comes from Beerwah, where his parents have an upholstery business. One of their first customers was the man who gave Mr Campbell his start in the industry and has offered

STORY NICK CROCKFORD MAREE Stephenson has, at times, been “exhausted, physically and emotionally” by her marathon 10 Desert Challenge – but is “absolutely loving it”.

“Deeper the challenge, deeper the experience” the Griffin resident said.

Ms Stephenson is past halfway in her 10,000km cycle ride across all 10 Australian deserts to raise $10,000 for Beyond Blue.

This week she was closing in on the mining town of Newman in the Pilbara region of Western Australia.

She started at Woodford on May 2 and aims to finish in Birdsville on September 17 – as the first woman to ever achieve the feat.

However, the 1000km from Yulara to Laverton along the Great Central Rd, have taken her challenge “to the next level” … and beyond.

Permit issues almost stopped Ms Stephenson in her tracks when an Aboriginal council refused permission to cycle through one area on safety grounds.

She challenged the decision, wanting to know why.

Legal bodies became involved and Ms Stephenson had to sign an indemnity to go any further.

“This is not about putting my personal safety at risk,” she said. “I talked to local

As a precaution, Ms Stephenson camped hidden behind dunes, bushes and down side tracks with no obvious tyre marks. Local police also monitored her.

“The first night I was on very high alert,” she admitted. “I’ve never experienced anything like that so far out of my comfort zone.

But there’s only so much you can plan for.”

supplies after being unable to make a one-day dash along the Goldfields Hwy to Leinster. The highway bitumen is a contrast to the Great Central Rd where cars speed over the corrugated surface to flatten out bumps. “You just can’t do that on a bike,” she said.

Sharp stones on the shoulders punctured the tyres of Banjo, her fatwheeled bike. She had to stop every few kilometres to pump them up, by hand.

At night, packs of dingoes have wandered into the 53-year-old’s camp. Some have come right up to the awning of her tent - and then scattered after a loud blast on a whistle.

“The wildlife out here is amazing,” Ms Stephenson said, “the dingoes weren’t going to hurt me, but I don’t want them in my space.

That whistle is a blessing.”

Less so, was finding an essential roadhouse stop closed due to COVID-19.

“I really needed to top up supplies and recharge at TJ (Tjukayirla), but didn’t know this was going to happen. I had to say to the lady there ‘I really need your help’. She was so good. She sold me things and told me to go into the campgrounds where I’d be safe.”

It was another act of kindness which has been a feature of the journey.

Maree has also received donations in tribute to Nigel Harris, who stopped to help Maree early in the ride, but died in an accident while watching a desert rally days later. One of his final social media posts was urging others to support the challenge.

Plea to save water this winter STORY NICK CROCKFORD UNITYWATER is urging residents across the region to do a quick assessment of their home, business or garden and help save water.

Despite rain in MarchMay, the region’s combined dam levels were at their lowest levels for May in a decade – and water restrictions are a possibility this year.

North Pine Dam, with a reduced capacity of 68 per cent due to upgrade work, was this week at 65.9 per cent, Lake Kurwongbah was at 100.5 per cent and South East Queensland’s collective dam storage at 60.1 per cent.

But Unitywater said residents needed to explore ways to save water, from using a broom instead of a hose for outdoor cleaning, to installing a winter pool cover to reduce the need for water top-ups.

“As we head into our dry season, we encourage everyone to make small changes and be part of a big collective effort to help save water,” Unitywater Communications and Engagement Manager Jana Dore said.

“With less rain, we tend to use more water to top up our pools, water our lawns and wash our cars.

“It means our storages take a double hit and fall more quickly than in summer months.

“There are lots of easy and cost-effective ways to

help save water.

“Using a broom or leaf blower instead of a hose to clean outdoor areas, installing water-efficient shower heads or simply cutting showers to four minutes are great places to start.

“Drought tolerant plants, brooms, buckets, hose trig-

ger nozzles and other water efficient devices are available from local hardware stores or garden centres.

“These small changes can make a big difference and we thank residents and businesses for all of their water-saving efforts.”

Stage set for big production

TWO vehicles, a garden and a street on stage, as well special lighting effects and projections of scenery, bring to life Mousetrap Theatre’s production of The Lady in the Van. The play, by British playwright Alan Bennett, tells the true story of his relationship with eccentric homeless woman Mary Shepherd, whom he befriended in London’s Camden in the mid-1970s.

Bennett agreed Miss Shepherd could park her van in his driveway for three months – she stayed 15 years, until her death in 1989.

RESIDENTS at Azure Blue Retirement Village enjoyed morning tea for a good cause on June 15, when they hosted an Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea event.

On June 15, residents enjoyed a morning fete with cakes, slices, savouries and jam for sale in the baked goods stall, and had the chance to buy handcrafted items.

Knitted teddies and beanies not sold were donated to Redcliffe Hospital Auxiliary for its hospital shop.

The event included entertainment, raffles and competitions, raising more than $1800 for Cancer Council Queensland.

The Biggest Morning Tea has been a fixture on the Azure Blue Retirement Village calendar for many years, always organised and supported by resident, the late Peg Presneill.

Luke’s special birthday in his new home A NORTH LAKES man has celebrated his 40th birthday with family and friends in his own home for the first time in years.

Diagnosed with Huntington’s Disease just weeks before his 30th birthday, Luke had spent the past six years living in an aged care facility at Clontarf, but last month moved into a complex of seven two-bedroom apartments custom-built by charity Youngcare.

The apartments will be home to 14 young people who have been living in aged care, institutions, hospital rooms or at home

attend pop-up stalls or nominate for a community reference group.

“This is a small group of community members who will work closely with our neighbourhood planning team to set a vision for the area and some strategies to help us get there,” she said.

Third-generation Kallangur resident Gemma Gale is keen to see the area reach its potential.

“We’ve got people with a lot of heart but we haven’t had a town with a heart.

I think it’s exciting the neighbourhood plan will give those residents the chance to have their say,” Ms Gale said.

Rev Clark said it would be a warm, welcoming space not a commercial, concrete structure.

The church community celebrated the start of the project with a sod turning and blessing service on June 27.

“With the construction of the physical building about to take place, it can be easy to forget that this is a people project,” Mr Clark said. “We keep reiterating that this is not a building project but a becoming project. I have come to realise that the struggle, the journey, the wrestle is what prepares us and makes us ready for the

Hub Steering Committee Chairperson Kerri-Anne Dooley is excited to see the

VOLUNTEERS, community members, corporate staff, politicians and school students have rolled up their sleeves and had a hand in planting 24,000 trees at the Nathan Road Wetland Reserve at Kippa-Ring in the past two years.

While COVID-19 lockdowns and restrictions slowed progress, they did not dampen enthusiasm for the Revive the Wetlands project, which is transforming more than 40ha near the aerodrome and Mueller College.

Nathan Road Wetland Bushcare Group volunteer Gary Brennan said they received $30,000 in funding from the Federal Government via the Community Environmental Program in 2019.

“In 2020, we did start but COVID hit and we had to stop everything,” he said.

“We picked it up again in May this year.”

The group, of about eight volunteers, has also received considerable sup-

port from Moreton Bay Regional Council, Stockland, and Conservation Volunteers Australia.

Mr Brennan said he had been part of the Chelsea Street Bushcare Group since 2006 and thought they could do some work at the Nathan Road Wetland Reserve as well.

They started working in the area in 2018 and have so far planted about 24,000 trees, with help from developer Stockland which planted 19,000.

Conservation Volunteers Australia organised a community tree planting day in May, which was also attended by Federal Member for Petrie Luke Howarth and Moreton Bay Regional Councillor Sandra Ruck (Div 5).

There was plenty of interest in the group’s work as a result and it was decided to run an education session with students from Mueller College last month.

Mr Brennan said volunteers had been removing weeds and invasive species, and planting koala corri-

dor trees, grasses and other native plants.

“There were a lot of weeds like lantana that were blocking up the system and a lot of the grasses planted there when it was grazing land … they restrict the native plants. Our role is to remove them and plant native plants in their place and return the area to its original state,” he said.

The next task is to remove pepper trees in the area, which are an introduced species and encroach on native plants.

Mr Brennan said volunteers were making their way through the reserve towards the aerodrome, and native wildlife, including about 50 kangaroos, were now calling the area home.

“It’s a very sensitive wetland area, partly saline and freshwater, and a resting place for migratory birds.

A lot of bird watchers come here,” he said.

The long-term project will also require maintenance and more volunteers are needed.

Since joining the team at the age of 19, Miss Rebecca – as she is known to her young charges – has been part of the early education journey for hundreds of children. In fact, she is so embedded in their lives that fellow team member Bronte was among the first kindy kids she worked with.

Building a lasting legacy STORY KYLIE KNIGHT MICHAEL Connolly has achieved much in his 25 years in business, building it up from a modest display at the markets to an enterprise that sells Aboriginal art across the world.

There have been plenty of highs and lows, lessons learnt and relationships forged but Mr Connolly’s focus has always been on remaining true to himself and his art, and leaving a legacy for his family.

It all began with a handful of digeridoos and a stall at the Redcliffe markets, which evolved to stalls at the Eagle Street Pier and South Bank Markets, and then a home shop and finally a stand-alone shopfront, gallery and studio.

Making connections with state and federal govern-

ment economic development and trade departments, and a couple of insightful mentors have helped him along the way.

“So, here we are. I’ve got a grandson coming in August, so the next generation is coming. It’s been quite a journey actually,” Mr Connolly said “People think in business, you just go and do it but there’s marketing, the right people or the wrong people … in the bush, I found a handshake was life but down here they take your watch off. You don’t get that honesty down here, so I’ve been ripped off a few times.

“It’s about making Kullilla Art a great name, know-

ing who to speak with, who is interested? We’re not tokenism anymore, we’re here supporting our culture, our land, our people within the community that we live in,” he said “People don’t realise, but when you’re not from this country, you have to get permission to live on this land. So, I came down here and met traditional owners in the area and they gave respect for me to raise my family here and have my business here. It’s that rec-

onciliation between our people but also the wider community.”

His advice to people starting out in business is to learn, look out for the ‘sharks’ and to not sell yourself or product short.

“Research your product, Australian laws, copyright laws, everything that involves the business. They say in the first five years, you’ll fail. As soon as they put that in your head, that’s a negative straight away,” he said.

“I’ve stayed with my style of art for 25 years and now it’s getting recognition. I think a highlight was travelling the world with federal government and state governments and being a presenter for our culture and our land.

“It’s about leaving a legacy of what I’ve achieved and maybe one day I’ll write a book. I’ve been offered this journey and supported, in that people saw something in me and have given me that chance.”

A SWAG of prizes and trophies is on offer for budding young artists in the Moreton Bay Region Youth Art Awards.

Entries are open for the 2021 awards, which also give artists who live or go to school in the region the chance to win money for their school.

Moreton Bay Region Mayor Peter Flannery said he was amazed at the level of talent on display at last year’s awards exhibition.

Entries close on September 1.

Artists can enter all kinds of works, ranging from paintings to

drawings and sculptures.

Last year’s winner in the 3D category for students in PrepYear 3, Jasper Rogers, spent days creating Under the Sea, a colourful, interactive sculpture made up of nine sea creatures including fish, a shark, a seahorse, a turtle, and a starfish.

Jasper said he discovered many challenges while making his piece, ranging from getting the size and shape of the creatures right to figuring out the height to display each piece to convey a story.

“The shark and the seahorse were the hardest because they are really heavy,” he said.

“I had to draw about 15 seahorses to get the correct size and shape.”

Last year was Jasper’s first year working with three-dimensional art, and while he did encounter challenges in the process, his finished piece included each sea creature being able to rotate on its stick, allowing Under the Sea to change to create different stories.

Mayor Flannery said art was a great outlet for the mind and

the soul and the exhibition gave young people in the region a chance to express themselves.

The collaborative section is open to schools in the Moreton Bay Region to enter collaborative works. A group of three or more students of the same group qualify to win a prize in each of the two art categories.

Prizes consist of a $1000 scholarship to be spent on art workshops for the winning school. Individual entrants can win prize money of $200.

Crispy Moreton Bay bug spring rolls, coriander salsa

Method

To prepare the bugs, place on their back and, using a sharp heavy knife or cleaver, split the length of the shell from head to tail.

Remove the digestive tract (grey thread) running down the middle of the tail meat.

If you are barbecuing them, opt for green bugs and use a teaspoon to clean out the head cavity.

The yellowy-orange tomalley or ‘mustard’ is terrific to enrich a simple sauce of melted butter, lemon juice and garlic or to give some mayonnaise a mineral boost.

Remove the bug meat from the shell then cut into 1cm dice. Refrigerate until required.

Heat a large frying pan over high heat. Swirl in oil and, once it is shimmering, toss in the cabbage, mushrooms, ginger and garlic. Stir fry for 1 minute then tip into a large bowl.

Allow to cool, then add bug meat, sesame oil, herbs and season lightly. To make spring rolls, set wrappers on a board like a diamond with a point facing you. Place filling in a cylinder shape. Fold up the bottom point of the wrapper to cover the filling. Fold in the two edges and continue to roll away from you. Brush this last point with a little egg to seal.

Preheat vegetable oil in a fryer to 180C. Fry rolls for 5 minutes or until golden. Drain well and serve with salsa and coriander.

Coriander salsa Ingredients

• 1 tsp sesame oil

• 1 tbls vegetable oil • 1 yellow capsicum, peeled, seeded and diced • 1 orange capsicum, peeled, seeded and diced • 1 red capsicum, peeled, seeded and diced • 2 Roma tomatoes, skinned, seeded and diced

• 1½ tbls vegetable oil

• 1 tbls finely chopped coriander + additional sprigs for garnish

• ¼ savoy cabbage, thinly sliced

• 1 tbls finely chopped mint

• 100g shiitake mushrooms, stalked and thinly sliced

• Sea salt and freshly milled pepper

Preheat a large frying pan over low heat. Add oil and saute capsicums in oil in for 2 minutes.

IF you are keen to compost, but do not know how to get started, we have some tips guaranteed to make your garden grow.

We consulted the experts at Loop Growers, renowned for their war on waste and for working with the region’s restaurants and cafes to create a waste loop.

They take kitchen scraps from hospitality venues and use the organic material to make compost, which is used to grow fruit and vegetables.

This produce is sold back to the suppliers – closing the loop.

In fact, founders Alice Star and Phil Garozzo will be hosting two events as part of the Tastes of Moreton Bay program. The first, Samford Harvest, has sold out but they will also host a Sprinter Feast in their barn on September 4 from 4-9pm.

Ms Star says changing the way you think about waste is the first step in producing compost that

“You have to change your notion of what waste is and start thinking about the food scraps you’re throwing away as a resource,” she said.

Ms Star said there are a few important rules to follow when composting.

1. SEPARATE YOUR WASTE

Acidic materials and egg shells can slow down your compost. If there is only a small amount going in, it will not do too much harm, but if there is a fair amount, keeping them separate is best. Dry out your egg shells and crush them before adding them to the compost to speed up their breakdown.

2. USE TWO OR THREE COMPOST BINS

Have at least two bins, so one can be rested once it is full. This will give you an opportunity to use what you have produced. Ideally, you would have three bins – a third for acidic scraps.

3. ADD CARBON TO THE MIX

If you are just adding fruit and vegetable scraps, you are essentially just adding nitrogen and because the mix is not balanced with carbon it smells bad. Ms Star said many people abandoned composting when this happened. For each scoop of scraps you add to your compost, you should add two scoops of carbon (leaf litter, sugar cane mulch, dried grass clippings).

4. MAKE SURE IT IS NOT TOO WET

The mix needs to be moist but not dripping wet through your fingers when you squeeze it. Alice recommends soaking your carbon material in water overnight before putting it in the compost bin or pile.

That will give the mix the moisture it needs.

5. KEEP IT AERATED

Add small tree branches for aeration.

These branches will not break down as quickly and can be pulled out and used again, once the compost is finished.

6. USE YOUR COMPOST

You know it is ready when it feels and looks like soil. Chunky bits are OK because they will continue to break down.

Compost can be added to veggie patches, herb and flower gardens, pot plants and even directly onto your lawn. The combination of compost and plant roots creates the perfect environment for good microbes and fungi to thrive in your soil.

Hooked On Fishing and Boating Fishing

LAST edition, I spoke about lure action playing such a large part in their effectiveness.

While it’s my belief that action is at least 90 per cent of a lure’s effectiveness, there’s no denying that certain colours do seem to produce more consistently than others.

As an example, flathead love pink, but the contrast to this is the undeniable effectiveness of the soft plastic lure colour, “Motor Oil”. Pink and motor oil are about as far away from each other on the colour spectrum as they can get, yet they both produce. In my experience, Motor Oil would be the premier allrounder colour for anyone looking to start fishing with soft plastic lures, especially for our bread and butter species such as bream, flathead, etc.

Lure colours and patterns can be broadly segregated into three categories, brights, naturals and darks, with each one having their place. I choose colours based mostly on water clarity at the time and location I’m fishing. In clear water, I tend to use either brights, (to stand out and grab the fish’s attention), or naturals to mimic the naturally occurring prey that my target species feeds on or is feeding on.

In murky, discoloured water I’m very fond of darks or solid colours as I feel they silhouette much better against the backdrop of the water at the time, thus giving the fish an easier target once the vibration has drawn them in. Contrasting colour patterns, such as a light or bright main colour with bold dark stripes, spots or features

can also work very well in murky water as these features viewed against the lighter background once again give the attacking fish an easier target.

On those special days, when the fish are fired up and feeding aggressively, they’ll hit just about anything we throw at them, but when they’re shut down or finicky, lure selection becomes much more important for us to achieve success. This is when style of lure, colour and retrieve technique all play a part.

FISHING REPORT • Once again, healthy fishing all round at the moment with plenty of baitfish around the peninsula and bay, and the great condition of the fish reflecting this.

• Flathead fishing very well.

• Some very nice tailor up to 70cm being caught.

• The odd jewfish being landed as well.

• Tailor off Woody Point jetty, off all the rocky points and inshore reefs around the peninsula, Ted Smout platform, Pine River mouth and particularly in Bramble Bay. • Plenty of squire and snapper on the rocky points, inshore reefs and the odd one off the jetties.

• Bream on the beaches, jetties, rocky points and on the inshore reefs.

• Bream, flathead and some whiting in Hays Inlet, the Pine River, Scarborough Spit and foreshore, and the mouth of the canals.

LAST edition, I went through some of the features of the local tiger and pencil squid including how fast they grow and how short their life span is. This time, I’ll look at some of the other features of these fascinating animals.

Squid have a lot of heart. Three in fact. They have a systemic heart which pumps blood around the body and two hearts which pump blood to each set of gills. Among the invertebrate animals, squid have the best developed nervous system.

Squid have eyes that are superficially like that of vertebrate animals such as mammals, however they differ in terms of how they focus and their ability to see polarised light. If you want to see how your squid jig looks to a squid, have a look at it while you are wearing a pair of polarised sunglasses.

As squid fishermen know, squid respond strongly to light.

The light environment that squid best respond to differs between species. Our local squid species prefers a level of underwater light illuminance between 2.5-10.0 lux. The colour of the light is substantially less important. These are things to think about if you are looking at buying a light to attract squid.

Anyone who catches squid must deal with the ink.

Squid eject the ink to distract predators. It creates a visual cloud in the water, and it may chemically deter some predators. However, its main function is it to create a cloud in the water that buys the squid a little bit more time to escape

DR DAZZA from a potential predator. The main chemical compound in squid ink is melanin which is also found in human skin. Squid ink is used in art, painting and cosmetics but is most used in Mediterranean and Japanese cooking. There is some medical interest in squid ink because of its anti-microbial and antiinflammatory properties.

Squid have an internal skeleton called a pen which most anglers that catch them are familiar with. The pen is the evolutionary remnant of the typical mollusc shell. Octopus lack a pen or any internal skeleton. The pen is made of chitin – a modified polysaccharide.

Squid can change colour – both in the water and after you have caught them. They achieve this by using their chromatophores on their skin. These are pigment sacs which the squid can open and close individually. In the water they change their colour to blend in with their background and can also use colour changes as a means of communicating with other squid of the same species.

Next time you catch a squid, think about the wonderful adaptations the animal has!

Injuries from Saturday night’s win could cost the side a couple of players, but Mogg said more would be known later this week.

“This will create more opportunity for people in our football club. It puts pressure on the first-grade team and Colts,” he said He says training together every week and not locking players into position was paying off.

“Everyone is competing really well at training and it’s times like this it comes back to help you, not so much at the beginning of the season,” he said.

He said losing the NRL players and 8-10 other players to injury could have a big impact, but he’s confident it will not because of the way the squad has trained and is structured.

“Preseason comes back to really help you and you saw that on Saturday night,” Mogg said.

“The exciting thing for me is that we didn’t play our best footy on Saturday night, I think we were deserving winners, but I don’t think it was our best defensive game.”

He says the side that plays the Jets in Quilpie this Saturday at 3pm (round 14) will be different again, and the focus at training will be the same as it has been all season – review and determine how to improve.

AFTER a bye and another week off due to the COVID-19 lockdown, the stage was set for a huge game against the competition leaders Wynnum Manly Seagulls.

It was a big occasion with it being Old Boys’ Day and the rivalry with Wynnum.

Supporters would have been surprised with the team playing in a black jersey to support Smart Pups.

The game was very entertaining, a high-scoring battle which saw the lead change hands on a few occasions.

With the NRL going into stage 4 protocols both teams were without their NRL affiliate players, making it a genuine reserve grade contest.

This meant we had a heap of team changes, with a few on debut, and Jayden Nikorima making his return to football after a long stint on the sidelines.

Jayden delivered a Man of the Match performance scoring two tries and setting up one, helping us to victory.

Although it was huge win for our club, we still feel we have a heap to work on with some poor defensive lapses and transitions.

Round 14 sees us head to Quilpie for country week against Ipswich. The next three weeks is a very important block to set up our season. We now sit in tied fourth place and a win against Ipswich could see us move into outright third.

STORY NICK CROCKFORD THE Hutchinson Builders Redcliffe Pro-Am, being held tomorrow and Friday, will have the best field ever seen at Redcliffe Golf Club.

All will be chasing a share of $60,000 – the biggest prize fund on the national Adidas PGA Pro-Am Series this year.

“It’s a huge entry list,” said Redcliffe’s Director of Golf Chris Adnams, “if it was the Queensland Open or NSW Open, the field would be exactly the same.

“It is the best field ever assembled at this club, chasing the best prize purse.”

It includes Jordan Zunic, winner of the 2015 BMW New Zealand Open and runner-up in the 2017 Australian PGA Championship and 2018 Izuzu Queensland Open.

There’s also Anthony Quayle, a European Tour player, who was runner-up in the 2018 Fiji International and won the 2020 Queensland Open.

Zalewski’s ‘highlight-reel’ win

SHAUN Richardson, the Scarborough-based racing driver, had a podium finish in round three of the Australian Stadium Trucks Series in Townsville on Saturday.

Richardson, from Road Rage Industries at Kippa-Ring, took third in race two and had hopes of going better in Sunday’s final outing.

But he was unable to get the set-up right for his “truck” and finished down the field, as he did in the opening race.

Round Four of the national series is currently scheduled for Sydney on August 20-22.

STORY NICK CROCKFORD NORTH Lakes’ boxer Miles Zalewski sent a stunning message to the lightweight division with a brutal knockout of Lee Fook in Newcastle last week.

Zalewski caught Fook, a late replacement for the unbeaten Paul Fleming who suffered a back injury, with a thunderous left.

The blow in round five has been described as a “devastating shot” and a “highlight-reel knockout”.

It was Zalewski’s ninth win in 10 pro fights and featured on major media outlets and will have caught the attention of promoters.

Hall ready for chasing pack in Tokyo showdown PAGE 60 // STORY CONTINUED HALL will join a select group in Tokyo. Only 44 Australian athletes have competed in four Paralympics since they started in 1948 and just 83 in four or more Games.

He was 14 when qualifying and 15 when competing at the Beijing Paralympics in 2008. Four years later came his first 400m Freestyle S9 gold at London

2012 and again in Rio 2016.

The former Pine Rivers State High School student also won gold in his pet event at the 2010, 2013 and 2015 World Championships – but the chasing ‘pack’ is growing. “(There’s) definitely a few more after me now,” said Hall, “being the older dog in the pack you expect that and I’m glad of the competition.

“It’ll make me work harder in the pool and keep me

on my toes. I’m going to make sure I do everything I mentally and physically can to hold on to my crown.

“At the moment I’m sore and tired after my first week back in the pool after a comp (Australian Trials in Adelaide).

“But Tokyo’s on the horizon and I know what has to be done. I have made a lot of changes since the world champs in 2019.

“I’m looking forward to getting up on that stage

and seeing what happens.”

Hall, who used to train at Grace Lutheran College Rothwell, has also prepared for the weight of expectation in Tokyo.

“I felt pressure in Rio trying to go back-to-back,” he said, “it hit me in the marshalling room before my race. It was hitting me last week at the trials with all these 16 and 17-year-olds and I’m going “come on’!

“Hopefully when the time comes you can channel it

the right way and get the job done.”

And the future? Hall did a Bachelor of Exercise and Sports Science at the University of Queensland in 2017 and is now finishing a Bachelor of Physiotherapy at the Australian Catholic University.

In the pool, Hall said he is “definitely looking beyond Tokyo”, but will see how the body holds up this year.

“People close to me know Brenden Hall, drawing on experience. what the go will be.”

LAKEISHA ‘Lucky’ Patterson has turned the disruption of the pandemic to her advantage on the long countdown to next month’s Paralympic Games (August 24-September 5) in Tokyo.

The 22-year-old, who does strength and conditioning, massage and physio in North Lakes, focussed on “little one percenters” which can make a big difference when going for gold in the 400m Freestyle S9.

Japan is the latest stop in a swimming journey which began 17 years ago to manage muscle stiffness after Lucky was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy left Hemiplegia soon after birth and epilepsy at the age of five.

The UQ student will hit the water in Tokyo a year later than planned after COVID forced the Paralympics and Olympics back by 12 months – but that time has been used wisely.

“Sometimes different can be good,” said Lucky, who trained at Southern Cross, in Scarborough early in her career.

“It took time to adjust and figure out what was happening. Instead of seeing negatives, I instilled everything I have worked on and used to move forward.

“That gave us more time to work on those little one percenters. In a way, it was an exciting time to get

those added advantages.”

Lucky is among the favourites having has won gold at her last four major Games – World Championships 2015 and 2019, Rio Paralympics 2016 and Commonwealth Games 2018.

“Under the guidance of the amazing (coach) Harley (Connolly) I’m confident

of being able to swim well at the games,” said Lucky who learned to swim on Bribie and is now at Burpengary Aquatic Centre.

The Caboolture resident said securing her ticket to Toyko brought a mix of emotions. “To finally have that security of ‘yes you are going’ was a sense

of pride and accomplishment,” she said. “But the job is not over yet. It’s still head down and put in the hard work and progress towards those goals of winning gold.”

The 400m Freestyle S9 starts on the opening day of competition in Tokyo and Lucky was, at the time

of writing, unsure about racing the 100m Freestyle or 34-point replays.

“I’m concentrating on getting myself ready, not about everyone else’s results or times,” she said. “I know to some degree what to expect; I know how important recovery is …. and all those one percenters!”

‘Wow, this is real’ – Hayes’ reality check

Kirralee Hayes off to her first Paralympics

KIRRALEE Hayes has her boarding card for the flight to Tokyo, but says reality may not ‘sink in’ until she actually steps on the plane.

The 17-year-old from Genesis Aquatics in Bray Park is preparing for her first Paralympic Games (August 24-September 5).

Hayes, a founding member of the club at Genesis Christian College, is in the S13 (vision impaired) 50m

Freestyle and 100m Butterfly in Japan.

At the trials, she needed to swim 28.00 seconds to have a chance of making the Tokyo team. She clocked exactly 28 seconds.

“I was very happy, then it was just a question of waiting to see if I got in,” Hayes said. “I was just about to leave for the finals (at the trials) when I was told ‘make sure you are here at

this time with these things’.

“I thought wow! It (the official announcement) was surreal. I wasn’t going to believe it until I was called out. I thought they might have got it wrong.

“Then I started thinking this is real. But, honestly, I don’t think it will sink in until I get on that plane to Tokyo.”

Hayes is based at the Australian Institute of Sport

(AIS) in Canberra, but regularly returns to train at Genesis Aquatics with coach Rick Pendleton.

“Once Kirralee is in the moment she is very capable,” said Pendleton, “her racing ability is pretty strong and she doesn’t get phased by too much.

“When it comes to the final at a big meet she generally steps up and knows what she has to do.”

Coach says focus must be racing COACH Harley Connolly has a simple message for his swimmers ahead of the Tokyo Paralympic Games.

“We are going there to race, not be spectators,” said Connolly, Head Coach at Burpengary Aquatic Centre. “Enjoy the games spirit after you have got the job done and then support your teammates.”

The Bribie resident is off to his second Paralympic Games as part of Australia’s coaching team. He was in Rio 2016 and at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Brenden Hall and Lakeisha Patterson have been with him since 2012 and 2016 respectively, at Lawnton and now Burpengary.

In Tokyo they will prepare with Connolly and two other swimmers appointed to the coach.

“They (Hall and Patterson) swam well in the trials and have set themselves up for a good Games,” said Connolly, who moved to Burpengary in 2019.

“We’ve still got some time and are in a good position physically and mentally.”

The focus on Australia’s Paralympic swimmers will then sharpen in a preGames camp at Cairns before they fly to Tokyo.

“It’s not just coaching to a physical fitness level, it’s mental as well,” said Connolly. “It’s making sure they are mentally and physically fit when on the blocks … composed and focussed, confident. “(As coach) you can worry for them, but cannot show it, you don’t want it to rub off on them.

“I’m usually pretty composed and not much phases me in the competition arena. But, I’m absolutely happy to celebrate with them.”

It also pitches Power against former player and coach Warren Moon, now in charge at Brisbane Roar, who said it was a “dream draw”.

“It’s exciting. It’s against a team I know a lot about, and a club that has been very supportive of Brisbane Roar in the past 18 months,” Moon said.

“I like the idea that we’re playing in the Redcliffe area as well, so we should get Brisbane Roar fans and

Power fans out in force.

“It’s a tournament and we want to win the tournament. The attitude has to be spot on. At the moment they’re in our way.”

Brisbane Roar will be in their pre-season phase of the 2021-22 season, but Feuerriegel expects them to field a full-strength side.

“We’re under no illusions it will be a full strength side,” said Power’s president Craig Feuerriegel, “they will have players

looking to impress and have a very successful NPL squad.”

Power are 10 points clear at the top of the NPL Qld, with a perfect record from 14 games, despite having last Saturday’s match at Gold Coast United postponed due to the weather.

Luke Reddiex, a former Redcliffe Hockey Club junior has reached a remarkable milestone for Pine Rivers St Andrew.

The 33-year-old recently played his 250th match for Pine Rivers, who he joined in 2007 after 20 games for Bulimba (2003-2005).

Reddiex, who plays as a midfielder or striker, has scored 98 goals in Brisbane Hockey Division One.

STORY NICK CROCKFORD PENINSULA Cricket Club will play a major role in the centenary celebrations of the Warehouse Cricket Association (WCA).

Filmer Park, at Woody Point, is to host the WCA Centenary Gala Day on Saturday, August 7 with three Twenty20 (T20) matches, some under the ground’s new floodlights.

C Grade and Over 40s matches will be followed by a WCA side taking on the Queensland Bulls Masters, in their first ever match in the Moreton Bay Region.

The Masters are former Queensland and Australian players, many legends in the game, who support organisations and cricket development.

Bulls’ Founding members included Jimmy Maher, Andy Bichel, Michael Kasprowicz and Martin Kent. Ian Healy was the first chairman, Maher the

Seventeen teams played the first season, representing founding businesses in Brisbane such as Howard Smith, McWhirters, Rhoades and Tristrams, to name a few.

On the 50th anniversary in 1970-71, there were around 200 teams per season – summer and winter. first managing director.

THE magic of the FFA Cup is coming back to Peninsula Power next month.

Power, runaway leaders of the state level NPL Qld, will face A-League Brisbane Roar in Australia’s top knockout competition.

It will also see Roar coach Warren Moon face the club he played for and coached.

Though drawn at home, Power will switch the tie from AJ Kelly Park to the Roar’s home ground at Moreton Daily Stadium.

At the time of going to press, the date had not been announced.

However, Power president Craig Feuerriegel described it as a “magical” draw in the Round of 32.

The club’s only previous match at this stage was in 2017 when 4000 people packed Moreton Daily Stadium to see Power go down bravely to A-League Melbourne City.

BRENDEN Hall admits getting ‘goosebumps’ just talking about the Paralympics Games in Tokyo - which are still six weeks away.

The 28-year-old from Mango Hill has been selected for the Australian swimming team and flies to Japan aiming for a third successive gold medal in the 400m Freestyle S9.

He is also in the 100m Backstroke S9, where he won bronze at Rio 2016 and possibly in the 4x100m 34 point relay.

“You are representing your country, friends and family at home. Teammates in the warm-up pool and the village are cheering you on,” said Hall, who trains at Burpengary with coach of nine years Harley Connolly.

“That’s the spark which brings more out of you. I get goosebumps just talking about it and it’s my fourth Games! I wouldn’t be doing this if I wasn’t excited about pulling on the green and gold again.

“It’s a hard process and it definitely gets harder. Nothing prepares you for it, but I love every moment of it. The excitement is still there, 100 per cent.’’
