STORY KYLIE KNIGHT BECOMING a new parent is exciting but can be overwhelming and isolating as North Lakes resident Padmal (Paddy) Vithanage discovered.

“My wife Nishi and I were feeling isolated when Eleena, now 22 months, was born. We were looking a group to connect with and get socially connected,” Mr Vithanage said.

“I was feeling socially isolated as a dad, even though I worked and had other people around me.”

He joined the Dads of North Lakes Facebook group, which had been created by the national notfor-profit Dads Group, and became pretty active.

And, after about six months, he was asked to organise face-to-face activities. The group is going from strength to strength, now meeting every week-

end for coffee or a play in the park near Lake Eden with their children.

“That’s really giving a good feeling, personally for me and for other dads that are coming,” he said.

“I like the social connection, meeting guys with similar interests. I get a place where I’m very supported and there’s no judgement. I like to talk about things that I can’t talk about with my partner,” he said. “I have a pas-

sion for doing this and getting more active.”

He is keen to organise a Man with Pram event on Father’s Day, which will most likely involve a walk around Lake Eden, and family barbecue.

The National Dads Group, which was started by Tom and Kate Docking, now has connections with 70 local groups.

Council adopts record Budget A RECORD $245 million capital works spend is the centrepiece of Moreton Bay Regional Council’s $743 million 2021-22 Budget handed down on June 18.

The investment in infrastructure is $25 million more than last year.

More than $120 million will be spent on building new community infrastructure, in addition to the $117 million allocated to building renewals and upgrades.

Mayor Flannery said keeping rates low, while spending enough to “keep our resurgent economy charging” was a difficult balance against a backdrop of complicated pressures resulting from COVID-19.

An average total rates bill will increase by about $1.20 per week (3.9 per cent).

“We do not take this lightly, in fact it was the most important consideration with regards to the increase in required revenue,” Mayor Flannery said.

“In Moreton Bay Region, rates account for 50 per cent of our revenue. I’m proud to say that not only have we minimised the rate rise, we’ve also retained all of the rebates paid to pensioners. That includes the $250 rebate for full pensioners and $100 rebate for part-pensioners that we introduced in the last year.”

Mayor Flannery said the heart of the Budget was behind the headline figures.

Mayor Flannery said the region’s road networks were already congested and significant investment was needed.

“That’s why we have continued to work with the State and Federal Governments on projects like Young’s Crossing, the Moreton Connector and

the alignment for the West Moreton Arterial and ensuring we plan for the future,” Mayor Flannery said.

“Council’s own Capital Program for 2021-22 invests $124 million or almost 50 per cent into transport projects. This includes investment in Old Gympie Rd of almost $20 million.

We will also commence construction on Henry Rd in the coming months to ensure that we increase its flood immunity and allow people to get home from work quicker.”

Community input needed for council planning review STORY BREEANA ROBERTS A REVIEW of the Moreton Bay Region’s planning scheme will address concerns about development, lifestyle, and ensure it responds to the region’s changing needs.

Endorsed by Council last week, the Reshaping our Region’s Planning Work Portfolio outlines mea-

sures to be launched over the next five years.

They include the Planning Scheme 2016 Reset Program, the Great Places Program, the Neighbourhood Planning Program, a Growth Areas Program, a Regional Planning Program and the New Planning Scheme Review Program.

Mayor Peter Flannery said work would start soon on the Neighbourhood

Planning Program.

It will provide short, medium, and long-term actions to ensure the planning scheme reflects community expectations.

“This is in direct response to calls for reviews into things like building heights, car park ratios and Next Generation housing,” Mayor Flannery said.

“This initiative is urgently needed if we are to protect

the unique characteristics of our existing communities in the face of booming population growth. “(It) will ensure we have enough green spaces, wildlife habitat and community infrastructure like parks and playgrounds so we continue to enjoy our lifestyle while catering for that growth.”

Deputy Mayor Denise Sims (Div 7), who has lobbied for Neighbourhood Planning, is

delighted Kallangur and Dakabin will be the first suburbs to trial the initiative.

“I’ve spent the past two terms bringing the community together through great planning initiatives like parks, playgrounds and footpaths but I want to ensure locals feel included in our broader planning processes,” she said.

Residents in Kallangur and Dakabin will receive

a newsletter explaining what to expect through the Neighbourhood Planning process.

Council will be calling for nominations to be part of the Community Reference Group from July 12.

“We already know a lot about what people don’t want, this is a chance to tell us what you do want,” Cr Sims said.

Tributes flow for dedicated officer STORY JODIE POWELL

QUEENSLAND Police, the Premier, Police Minister and Moreton Bay Regional Councillor Mark Booth are among thousands of people to offer condolences to the family of Deception Bay Police Station’s Senior-Constable David Masters, who was killed on Saturday.

Police Commissioner Katarina Carroll said Sen-Constable Masters’ death was an absolute tragedy for the Queensland Police Service and the entire Queensland community.

“It is with a very heavy heart we confirm the loss of one of our own, a senior constable who was working hard to protect his community,” Commissioner Carroll said.

“My sincerest condolences go out to the officer’s family, friends and colleagues at this incredibly difficult time.

“This is devastating news for our police family and we are offering support to all officers and staff.

“Sadly, this incident

The Queensland Police Union said Sen-Constable Masters, 53, left behind wife Sharon and son Jack, 21.

“Dave was passionate about horses and cherished his time in the QPS Mounted Police Unit.

“Our thoughts are with Sharon, Jack, and all of Dave’s friends and family at this time.”

The union said Mrs Masters described her husband as being “…dedicated to his role within the community to keep the public safe”.

Councillor Booth (Div 2) paid tribute to Sen-Constable Masters for his service.

“We (have) lost a Burpengary East local hero, Dave lived in our community and served our community, being stationed at Deception Bay,” Cr Booth said.

“Whether it be seeing Dave at the local shops, at our local Neighbourhood Watch meetings or while on patrol, Dave was always friendly and keen for a chat.

“We will all miss him and the jovial spirit he brought with him.”

In a joint statement, Premier Anastacia Palaszczuk and Police Minister Mark Ryan extended their sympathies to Sen-Constable Masters’ family, friends and colleagues.

“Our thoughts are with all those affected by this terrible tragedy,” they said.

“Sen-Constable Masters lost his life while protecting the lives of others.

“Police put themselves in the line of danger every day to protect us and keep us safe, and today, tragically, they lost one of their own.”

Gruelling journey of self-discovery STORY KYLIE KNIGHT ANT Hanna may be a man on a mission, but his bit to do 1000 push-ups for 1000 days is about much more than getting fit.

The Scarborough resident, who has clocked up more than 420,000 push-ups in 420 days, said the challenge he has set himself has improved his mental and physical health.

It all started in May last year, during the COVID-19 lockdown when Mr Hanna listened to a podcast about a boxer who did 1000 pushups a day when he was in prison and won a fight he was not expected to win.

“I thought I wonder what would happen if I did that and I’m locked in my house, like he’s locked in his cell. So, I undertook his training regime,” Mr Hanna said.

“The plan was to do it for a year and I learnt so much about myself mentally and about grit and resilience.

I thought, maybe I should keep going and extend it to 1000 (days).

“I didn’t go straight into the 1000, I started at 350 and each day I added 50 until I got to 1000. When I got

to 1000, I started counting and that was May 6.”

It used to take him one hour and 20 minutes, but now takes about half an hour at his gym with a view – Scarborough Beach Park. He is generally at the beach by 5am, preferring to get the task over and done with before his day starts.

The discipline of this routine has helped him deal with obsessive compulsive disorder and depression.

“I found it has really helped in bringing up my mood and having that order. Once I’ve done it, I can deal with the chaos of the day,” he said.

“It’s changed the way I do a lot of things. I get up early and now I’ve started a do-list where I put that on top because it’s the worst thing to do and I do it straight away. Half that list is done before the kids even wake up.”

Mr Hanna has been a firefighter for about eight years and was a police negotiator and tactical operative in Victoria, but the past 12 months has taught him more about himself.

“It’s been a really interesting experiment … my mind has totally changed

on what we’re actually capable of,” he said.

“I know it’s a little bit crazy, excessive. It’s a big effort but that’s why I’m continuing it. It seems every month, I’m learning a way to better negotiate life through such a simple thing I’ve started.

“Results come from sustained efforts of being uncomfortable. It’s about getting comfortable with being uncomfortable.”

It is a message he is keen to share with young people via school visits, his Instagram page and his second book.

His first book will be released soon and looks at his journey with obsessive compulsive disorder, the perils of quitting and the benefits of sticking it out.

“I’ve been able to control the compulsions for a number of years now, but the thoughts are still there.

When I’m more calm and relaxed I can combat those thoughts easier,” he said.

“With 75 percent of our headline artists living in greater Sydney, our state borders have been closed to them and will be for some time. And, as with all of us, quarantine is simply not a viable option for people with highly committed schedules,” Mr Nebe said.

“Our admin team are working around the clock to get everything back on track for a revised date TBA. This does, of course, rest upon a myriad of factors, so please bear with us.

“The logistics for this event are insane and rebooting is a mission we wish on no-one. Having said that, we are up for the challenge and always will be.”

Headline acts for the show included the Hoodoo Gurus, The SuperJesus, and Def-FX. Def-FX frontwoman Fiona Horne has already confirmed she’s ‘in’ for the show, when it is rescheduled.

Tips, not tickets for rail commuters STORY JODIE POWELL

POLICE have appealed to motorists to remove valuables from their cars after a recent audit at a Moreton Bay Region train station carpark identified more than 100 vehicles that would appeal to opportunistic thieves.

The audit, conducted by police from the Moreton Crime Prevention Unit earlier this month, spotted garage remote controls, bags, gift cards, parcels and money left in cars by commuters parked at the train station.

Sen-Constable Jo Arthur urged motorists to take valuables with them when they left their cars unattended and said police put notices on the vulnerable vehicles to remind owners of the risks.

STORY KYLIE KNIGHT THE key message to business owners and entrepreneurs as a 2032 Brisbane Olympic Games looks more likely, is to seek out opportunities early and be nimble as others emerge.

Business Moreton Bay Region hosted a panel discussion at Eatons Hill Hotel on June 18 with former Federal Foreign Minister Julie Bishop, Mayor Peter Flannery, Queensland Academy of Sport Chair and major events specialist Paula Robinson and Olympian Jessicah Schipper.

The event sought to discuss the ways the Moreton Bay Region could benefit from a possible 2032 Brisbane Olympic Games.

Ms Bishop said there were massive opportunities to promote Queensland, and in turn the Moreton Bay Region, on the world stage.

Key to that was not just selling a product, but selling an experience that visitors and athletes would remember for years to come.

Mayor Peter Flannery said there were opportunities for business, tourism and building the infrastructure the region needs.

“It’s been a long time coming for the council and the Council of Mayors but it’s something that’s going to deliver the infrastructure that we need, whether we have an Olympics or not, and I believe we will get it, it’s just a matter of ticking the last box. The beauty of an Olympics is it puts a timeline on it,” he said.

At this stage, the region is earmarked to host boxing at a purpose-built facility at Petrie’s The Mill.

Ms Robinson, who worked on the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, an Invictus Games and has been working on the 2032 bid, said she had seen firsthand how these could be ‘coming-of-age’ events.

“The key is to not wait, to pounce on the opportunity as soon as it arrives because the time comes and goes so quickly,” she said.

“It was the businesses that acted strategically

early on, went and actively sought out the opportunities that saw the biggest returns.”

Mayor Peter Flannery said he hoped an Olympic Games would prompt greater investment in public transport infrastructure and accommodation.

He is keen to provide a base for overseas teams to stay and train.

Ms Schipper said athletes were looking for high-quality facilities, a welcoming atmosphere and opportunities to explore the region.

The Games would also inspire the next generation of athletes, those starting out in sports now and those who will be watching the Games as children.

“That’s what Sydney was for me. I was 12, I saw Susie O’Neill (competing) and said ‘that’s what I’m going to be’. For the next two or three generations of sport, what will come out of this will be fantastic,” she said.

Ms Bishop said it was important the community took ownership of the event.

Blue skies for finale STORY KYLIE KNIGHT BIGGER crowds than usual grabbed the chance to enjoy the Redcliffe Show, when the sun emerged on Sunday.

Redcliffe Show Society President Garry Barlow said it was a wet start to the show on Friday, and rain threatened on Saturday but people came out on Saturday afternoon for the woodshop and night entertainment program.

“The crowd on Sunday was one of the best for a Sunday in a long time. People enjoyed getting out for the show,” Mr Barlow said.

While overall crowd numbers appeared to be down, takings were up, making it the best show in three years.

Many visitors even took the time to drop into the office and thank organisers for a wonderful event.

For Mr Barlow, highlights were the fireworks on Friday and Saturday night, the car show on Saturday afternoon, and the woodchop which featured some of Australia’s best male and female competitors.

The Kgari Kelpie Stud dog jumping was also popular on Sunday, with some spectators watching the dogs for hours.

Breathing new life into gym WHEN Marcus Schultz bought Breathe Health Clubs 24/7 gym at North Lakes, he wanted to make it accessible to people on a budget and appealing to women who might be nervous about joining a gym.

He has done both since he took over, two-and-a-half years ago, and has taken membership from 500 to 2000.

Mr Schultz has built a team that shares his philosophy of doing things well, supporting members and creating a genuine sense of community.

“One thing I harp on about is that community touch,” he said. “We’ve also worked hard to make women feel comfortable.”

He has worked hard to make gym membership affordable to those who would not normally be able to cover the cost, including young people from a similar battler background to his.

It has come a long way since Mr Schultz took over as a 22-year-old, after serving four years with the Army.

He left school in Year 11 to join up at the age of 17.

After he left the Army, he found the transition to civilian life difficult but had always been involved

in fitness. That interest and desire, to set the foundations for something more, is behind everything he has done since taking on the gym.

He said he valued the opinions of his members and staff, and had made changes to reflect what the majority thought would work best.

“I have high standards in regards to how things

are run … a little bit of ex-army coming out, I guess,” he said.

This was reflected in the day-to-day running of the gym and how the team interacted with members.

Mr Schultz has taken part in classes and been an instructor as well, so he knows how they should run from both sides.

the Les Mills classes earlier this month, Mr Schultz said he was told it was the largest in Queensland.

In the next 12 months, he plans to launch a clothing range, which is in the final stages of manufacture.

He also plans to open a second, larger performance centre Breathe Health Clubs 24/7 gym on the northside of Brisbane.

A TEMPORARY carpark built at the Redcliffe Showgrounds will be partially retained after Moreton Bay Regional Council reached an agreement with the Redcliffe Show Society.

The $400,000 carpark was built for hospital staff to use while the new Redcliffe Hospital carpark was built.

Under the agreement between Queensland Health and the Show Society – which had the consent of Council as custodians of the land – the grass was to be reinstated once the hospital carpark was complete.

Last week’s Council meeting heard there were three options – retain the carpark in its entirety, restore the grass entirely or partially retain the carpark and restore a portion of grass.

Councillors voted to keep half the carpark – retaining 144 spaces – and have the rest reinstated as turf.

Councillor Karl Winchester (Div 6) told the meeting the decision would allow the Society to continue its pre-existing use of the land, while retaining some carparking.

STORY JODIE POWELL THREE dedicated Drug Action Team volunteers have been recognised by Queensland Police and the Australian Drug Foundation for their work with the Moreton District Crime Prevention Unit.

Volunteers in Policing Ruth Kean and Bruce Wonders and Administrative Officer Tracey Beckley were presented with plaques honouring their service to the Local Drug Action Team Project.

Moreton Police District Superintendent John Hallam said the recognition was well deserved.

“I think it’s really important to acknowledge the work that’s done, especially o u r volunteers who really make that crime prevention space work for us,” Supt Hallam said.

He said the Local Drug Action Team Project enabled police to work with agencies in the region to educate and engage with young people to prevent crime.

Yachties buoyed by new club STORY JODIE POWELL NEWPORT Cruising Yacht Club members are looking forward to cruising into a new clubhouse in style thanks to funding from the State Government and Moreton Bay Regional Council.

Club Commodore Bolek Sulikowski said the $205,000 project had been years in the making and would be a welcome change from renting space.

“The club has been somewhat rudderless for the past few years without a permanent place to call home, so this is a massive boost for us,” Mr Sulikowski said.

“It will allow us to conduct more formal training and hold social gatherings without having to unpack and pack up equipment each time.

“I’m forever grateful for the investment from both the State Government and Moreton Bay Regional Council to help get this

project up and running.”

Club treasurer Gerardine Young has been on the building committee for the past three years and is excited to see the new facility taking shape.

She said it was a credit to the hard work and vision of past committees.

“It’s coming together on the foundations laid by others,” Ms Young said.

Mayor Peter Flannery said the clubhouse, on the banks of canals near Talobilla Park, was made possible with the State Government and Council working together.

“I’d like to thank the State for their $127,000 contribution through the Get Going Places and Spaces grant, which triggered Council’s commitment to add $22,900 for this project, and a $50,000 interest-free loan to help the club build their dream home.

STORY KYLIE KNIGHT WHEN Lynn Cank and her husband Nigel moved to Australia from the UK, she was looking for a lifestyle change and a chance to be part of a community.

Buying a home at North Lakes a decade ago and joining Lions has given her that and much more.

It followed their decision to emigrate to Australia from the UK in search of a change of pace and to be with their two daughters.

“The reason we bought here (in North Lakes), when we came from the UK (after stints at Bulimba and the Gold Coast), was that we were looking for somewhere with an obvious community,” Mrs Cank said.

“When we came here (for a look), we saw people running around the lake and families outside playing together … it was the first time I felt I was in a true community.

“It was important for us to meet people because we had left everything behind, except our daughters who were here. It was about building our new life.”

They had retired from busy jobs in the UK, Mrs Cank as a GP practice manager.

“We wanted a lifestyle change to be involved with our grandchildren. We also knew we wanted to do something on a voluntary level and supporting the community. That brought us here,” she said.

“I was at yoga one day and a couple of ladies were with Lions, so I went to a meeting with them and the club made me feel so welcome.

“They have been a support while I have been here and I love the projects they’ve

done. They’ve captured my heart.”

Some of those included raising money for a support dog, helping The Breakfast Club of Redcliffe, and mowing people’s lawns.

“I love the work that they do and the way they do it.

They do it in a kind and generous way, they’re very giving,” she said.

“I love that feeling. It makes you feel good about yourself. You can only go so far, supporting from the

sidelines, then you get to the stage that you feel you can give more. Now, I’m not working, I have more time to step up into these roles.

“They’re lovely people and I know I’m well supported in what I’m doing.”

She will put organisational skills developed during her career to work in helping others and the club she loves.

“I do feel this is my time to give back. That’s why I accepted the Vice-President position,” she said.

OUR annual changeover dinner was held on June 26. This marks the end of a two-year presidency with Lion Greg Milne at the helm and his board.

New President Lion Sean Hughes and his board will now take the reins in steering our club, following the great example set by their predecessors.

President Greg has been an extremely hands-on worker in the role, and we’re also in good hands with Lion Sean and his team moving forward.

Chef to share passion for produce STORY KYLIE KNIGHT GROWING up on a tropical fruit farm has given celebrity chef Matt Golinski an appreciation of why it is important to use local produce in the kitchen and it is a message he will be sharing at the Moreton Bay Food + Wine Festival.

“I was surrounded by the best of everything from a really early age and that’s really one of the things that inspired me to be a chef in the first place,” he said.

“My weekends were always in the kitchen baking cakes and making whatever recipes I could find the stuff for. Being surrounded by all that produce has driven the way I look at food now to this day.”

He recalls thinking, at eight years of age, that he wanted to be a chef.

“So, 41 years on and I still love it. I feel pretty blessed that I chose the right thing.

I still get excited about going to work every day. I’m a

lucky man,” he said.

Part of that excitement is learning something new every day. “You can live a thousand lifetimes and still not know everything there is to know. There’s not a day that goes by that I’m at work that I don’t learn something new about myself as a cook or about an ingredient or think of something new to do with something,” he said.

“It’s endless learning.

It’s also endless creativity.

You’re only limited by your imagination in the kitchen.”

When creating a menu, Mr Golinski starts with the produce that is in season and available locally.

“If the strawberry season has started, then I’m looking at strawberries; if the fig season’s ended, then figs are off the menu,” he said.

“Any menu is based around what I can get the best of locally and be ready to change things out as the seasons change.”

Mr Golinski has become an ambassador for region-

al produce and will headline Moreton Bay Food + Wine Festival on July 31 and August 1.

Foodies can watch his cooking demonstrations and learn tips and tricks at the Seafood Cooking Stage, presented by USC. “It’s going to be a fantastic weekend. I’ll be here on the Saturday and the Sunday and absorbing the whole feeling of what this region’s about … all right here in this beautiful setting at Woody Point,” he said.

Mr Golinski is a proud Queenslander who relishes the chance to travel to different regions, meet growers and learn more about their produce.

“That directly relates to how I see the product I’m using and how I then put it onto the plate,” he said.

So, is there a hero of the Moreton Bay Region, when it comes to food?

“Obviously, seafood is the big one and that’s what most people would think of

when they think of Moreton Bay,” Mr Golinski said.

“It’s a bay afterall, but the other one that comes to mind for me is the strawberry growers out around Wamuran, Mt Mee … all that area … it’s a big area for strawberry production and it always has been.”

Mr Golinski said everyone had the ability to cook, but some lacked confidence. “Mostly, people’s apprehension comes from past failures or just a fear of failure and you’ve got to be prepared to fail. I still do and I think every chef still does.”

Festive fun for Redcliffe Markets CHRISTMAS will come early to the Peninsula when Goodwill Projects brings a yuletide market to Redcliffe in July.

Market co-ordinator Mark Power said patrons could expect unique stalls selling everything from gingerbread houses to hot chocolates and shining crystals, hand poured candles, and evergreen pot plants.

“Follow the smells of gingerbread and spiced bratwurst through the laneways, and rug up while you browse the bespoke handicrafts, wrap your hands around a warm steaming drink and pretend that we have a real winter,” Mr Power said.

There will be gourmet street eats and family activities for visitors to enjoy.

“As a cheeky bonus, Redcliffe is boasting a magical fireworks display,” Mr Power said.

Hunt is on for memorabilia STORY JODIE POWELL KIPPA-RING Kindergarten and Preschool is gearing up to celebrate its 50th birthday in September.

With a family fun day planned, the kindy is hunting for memories and memorabilia to mark the occasion.

Director Beth Kerr said

while there were plenty of photos and information from more recent years, she was searching for earlier material.

“We don’t seem to have much information about the ’80s and ’90s,” Ms Kerr said.

“We’re looking for stories, photos and artwork.”

Ms Kerr said much had

changed since the kindy opened in the 1970s, but its philosophy of supporting children and their families had not.

“The parents saw a need for a kindy in the area when it opened and we still run as an affiliate with a volunteer parent committee and value their input.

“We would love to be able

to show our full story and want families that have been here to come and see the changes and the growth.”

The family fun day in September will feature activities for children, face painting and a display of memorabilia, as well as a colourful exhibition of children’s art.

Celebrating 70 years of inclusion STORY JODIE POWELL THE Endeavour Foundation at Redcliffe celebrated the organisation’s 70th birthday in style this month with a party to mark the occasion.

Site manager Callan Stout said the celebration gave clients and their families the chance to enjoy music and dancing, as well as lunch and a sneak preview of this year’s entry in the Foundation’s annual Battle of the Bands.

“They really enjoy music and the arts, getting out into the community and socialising with people, and it brings them a lot of joy to be able to come here,” Mr Stout said.

The Endeavour Foundation Battle of the Bands began in 2014, aiming to bring live music to everyone, no matter their ability.

This year’s Battle had the theme “the future is bright”.

ENRICHMENT for pets can be a wide variety of different activities, because enrichment is basically any action that improves or enhances a pet’s quality of life.

Every pet is different, so what might be a great enrichment activity for one pet, could very well be stressful to another. There are lots of different ways that you can provide enrichment for your pet at home.

DOGS Outgoing, high-energy dogs will love to run around chasing a ball, splash in your pool, or engage in a social playtime session with other pets.

By comparison, when providing enrichment to low-energy dogs, they will

probably prefer to spend time with you engaging in low-key activities, like brushing them or gently massaging them while they sit with you.

If your pet needs constant ongoing amusement, consider an activity that they can work away at on their own, like a Kong treat or a doggie ice block.

For elderly dogs, it is important that regardless of their mobility level, they get up and move around.

This might include a slow walk on a lead, a paddle in a shallow puppy pool, or just a wander around the yard to sniff the grass.

CATS Regardless of how social or friendly your furry feline is, they all need enrichment of some sort.

Unlike dogs, cats have a higher tendency to want to keep to themselves. They can still be a wonderful companion and member of the family, but it is important to know what your cat is comfortable with and respect its boundaries.

If you have a feline that prefers its own company, make sure that it has plenty

of room to move around, stretch its legs and explore throughout the day.

When inside the house, cats love to find somewhere warm to lay and enjoy the sunshine, so even if they don’t want to play, they can enjoy enrichment in other ways by laying near you

and lapping up the sun rays while you work or watch TV. Having a conversation with your cat might sound crazy, but even those who prefer minimal human interaction of the physical kind still need to know that you are there, and you love them, so don’t be afraid to

talk to them!

“It was one of the roles I always wanted and then I grew up and realised the

vocal range and how fit you have to be – I always thought I’d love to do it, but I never thought I could.

“I’ve lost 14kg – that’s how fit you have to be.”

A passionate Jack Black fan, Armstrong-Robley said he grew up singing Black’s material and counts a Tenacious D concerts as among his most memorable experiences.

“It’s the only concert I’ve

ever lined up for − I lined up for eight hours to be at the front of their moshpit.”

Armstrong-Robley said his fellow cast members were incredibly talented singing, dancing and playing musical instruments as they form a band at the behest of Dewey Finn, who’s posing as a substitute music teacher at a prestigious school.

“The majority of the

show is me and my class of 18 kids on stage.

“It’s a tough ask for a kid – they’re phenomenal.”

Redcliffe Musical Theatre President Madeleine Johns said the production was based on the movie, with the musical score by Andrew Lloyd Webber, and would have wide appeal.

“We thought it was going to be hard to find kids who could sing, dance, act

and play a musical instrument, but we were overwhelmed,” Ms Johns said.

Call to break safety heroes record

ENERGEX and Ergon Energy are calling on primary schools across Queensland to register now for the Safety Heroes program and help them break a participation record.

Since 2015, the program has taught children lifesaving information about how to spot electrical hazards in the home and in the community and how to behave safely around electricity.

Every primary school in the Moreton Bay Region has taken part at least once since the program began in 2015.

A multimillion-dollar investment from a firm aligned with Microsoft has helped a Kippa-Ring-based tech company expand its team, develop new products and fast-track its growth.

Jesi, an innovative remote work and journey/ activity management software company, was the first investment for Future Now Capital Management, a Sydney-based venture capital firm.

In 2019, Future Now Capital Management formed a world-first partnership with Microsoft that gave investors in the fund direct exposure to companies selected for Microsoft’s accelerated growth programs.

During the past seven months, Jesi has grown from a team of eight to 23 and now has offices in Sydney and Adelaide, in addition to its bases in Perth, Townsville and headquarters at Kippa-Ring.

“They’re looking to accelerate and work with companies like Jesi that can become high-growth, rapid-scale independent software vendors with Microsoft products,” Mr Hoolahan said.

So, how has it helped take Jesi to the next level?

“It’s all about people. The product was solid, we had a good grounding of core clients and so the investment really has been about extra resources – in key markets and key verticals, but also helped us build out the product,” he said.

“When you’re dealing with a large organisation there’s a certain credibility, there’s authentication around that as well.”

Mr Hoolahan said the next step was to “knock on every door”. “Our strategy is about finding partnerships, what we call channels and partners of value-added resellers

that become a reseller of Jesi or we integrate with like-minded solutions.”

“We leverage their market share and their market penetration as well. Certainly that scale, that integration … how do we make Jesi more sticky by having less touches essentially?”

His team is also keen to improve the user experience, so it easily integrates with existing platforms.

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought pain to Jesi and its customers, but also opportunity.

“I would say it has helped us create an extra four or five features within our product and they’ve become products themselves, so work from home, work onsite, remote work, lone work have always been a core of what we did but they actually now stand alone as individual product offerings,” he said.

Mr Hoolahan said a change in work patterns had reshaped Jesi’s client base to incorporate big mining companies and smaller operations.

“There’s a real opportunity for the small and medium businesses that have

people working from home or remote. Our system’s so affordable for those little organisations, that we can provide a really good layer of support for them,” he said.

Mr Hoolahan said being based in the Moreton Bay Region had served his company well and was a point of difference.

“I realised quite quickly I was on to something and changed my business from jewellery to hair nets.”

A UNIQUE exhibition will grace the shores of Scarborough next month when contemporary art group Carte Blanche stages Between the Tides.

The exhibition takes place over a four-hour period on the sand at Scarborough when the tide is at its lowest, giving artists maximum space to work.

Carte Blanche’s Trudy Stephens said Between the Tides had been held for the past eight years, brought to the peninsula by a member who had taken

part in a similar event in New Zealand.

“Visitors will see an inspiring range of ephemeral art works spread across the vast expanse of sand at Scarborough’s low tide foreshore,” Stephens explained.

As well as creating stunning visual art, Between the Tides creates an opportunity to highlight environmental issues and celebrate nature.

recycled and natural objects such as feathers, seed pods and discarded scrap to create their installations.

The 11 members of Carte Blanche form the backbone of the exhibition, but Stephens

said members of the public were encouraged to take part too.

“When the tide comes in we remove most works but anything that is natural can be washed away.

“We’re sorry to dismantle the works, but it is just a one day event and this is a temporary exhibition and experience.”

Magical STORY KYLIE KNIGHT IN COOLER parts of the world, winter is cold, bleak and pretty dull, but in South East Queensland gardens offer a stark contrast.

Redcliffe Garden Centre is bursting with colour, as winter wonders take centre stage.

The centre’s experts Sondra Grainger and Tylor Elmsly said cooler temperatures and the warm winter sun combined to create prime growing conditions for many flowering plants including annuals, natives and succulents.

“I always say, winter is just as colourful as spring,” Ms Grainger said.

Natives such as grevilleas, along with callistemons, camelias, roses, flowering cottage garden varieties, daisies and lavender are in full bloom as well as annuals such as pansies, violas, snap dragons, primula, osteospermum and pentice to name a few.

There are also plenty of indoor varieties flush with colour at this time of year such as African violets, cyclamen and orchids.

Succulents are also colourful in winter, with many flowering or displaying striking foliage.

Mr Elmsly said fire sticks had orange growth, flapjacks turned red and alloes produced an orange flower spike.

“Kalanchoes are a nice, pretty succulent that can have double blooms and big clusters of flowers,” he said.

Other winter wonders are angelonia, mona lavender (will tolerate shade), camelias (full sun) and nasturtium.

FERTILISER Ms Grainger said it was a good idea to give flowering plants a hit of fertiliser to promote blooms. Native plants should be given Searles Native Plant Food, while plants such as lavender would benefit from Searles Flourish.

Ms Grainger said liquid fertiliser was good for annuals because they flowered hard and fast.

They're here for a good time, not a long time lower part of the plant as it grows? A couple of these would make a stunning statement at the front of any home, and they perform well in pots too.

Local birds will love you and the beautiful yellow flowers, if you plant a bush lemon grevillea in your garden.

Ms Grainger said kangaroo paw was also looking good at the moment.

“You can create a very stunning winter native garden very easily up here (in Queensland) and

many will flower through into spring as well,” she says.

“Foliage colour is out of control this time of year. This is because plants are not under the stress of the hot summer sun.”

Creating a winter show in your garden is also a good excuse to do some companion planting using pansies and marigolds to keep pests at bay.

“There’s nothing better than a big planter of annuals,” Ms Grainger said.

Gardening at this time of year can also be fun for the kids.

Get them to look for the faces in pansies and make snapdragon flowers “talk” by squeezing them in just the right spot.

Many flowers in bloom right now are also edible, such as violas, pansies, nasturtiums, calendula, dianthus and cornflowers.

If you’re looking for a flowering, plant that will do well indoors, vriesea is a bromilead that has a flower spike that lasts for months.

WATERING While temperatures may be cooler, the sun still has plenty of punch and westerly winds will dry plants out. “You need to keep an eye on hanging baskets, especially when it’s windy, and small pots, which will dry out quickly,” Ms Grainger said. Use the ‘finger test’ to determine if your containers and hanging baskets need a drink. As for garden beds, you should give them a half-hour soak once a week. “It’s a good idea to mulch to conserve water.

Mulch will keep the moisture in there,” she said.

I strongly believe that a lure’s action and subsequent vibration in the water make up at least 90 per cent of a lure’s effectiveness, with colour being the icing on the cake. I base my belief in this on my experience of catching, and seeing fish caught in water visibility of almost zero, on lure colours closely matching water colour to an extent that the fish couldn’t possibly see the lure until they’re almost on top of it. Thousands of barramundi are caught every year on brown or drab-coloured lures in water the colour of coffee. Black/dark lures in low light or at night are very effective, and clear/ translucent lures fished in clear water also produce good results.

Lure fishing is an incredibly rewarding way to fish with the strike usually being significantly harder than on a dead bait. The fish mistake the lure as being alive and are therefore hitting it at a speed they would normally apply to a fleeing baitfish that will escape if the predator isn’t fast enough. For me, the attraction to lure fishing is that strike.

Tiger squid grow faster in warmer water than cooler water. In sub-tropical areas, tiger squid can reach over 400g and it only takes between 100 to 150 days to do so.

If you are a tiger squid, your life flashes by. Most tiger squid live for less than 200 days. The exceptionally fast growth rate of squid is fuelled by a voracious appetite and all species are carnivorous.

It only takes about 140 days for a male tiger squid to mature, but slightly longer for females. Can you tell a mature male from a mature female tiger squid just by looking at it?

The answer is yes. On one of their arms, males have a series of hooks rather than suckers and this structure is called a hectocotylus.

Tiger squid can be successfully hatched and raised in captivity in marine aquaculture ventures, but this has not been done on a commercial scale.

Hatchlings can be cannibals which is something that needs to be managed when trying to produce them.

SQUID fishing has always been popular in Moreton Bay but during the past decade, in particular, interest among recreational anglers in catching them has increased.

This is the first of two articles where I introduce you to the secret life of squid …

While there are many species of squid captured in Moreton Bay, the main two species are the tiger squid (Sepioteuthis lessoniana) and the pencil squid (Uroteuthis etheridgei).

The tiger squid is the most popular for recreational anglers because of its larger size although my personal preference, on the dinner plate, is the smaller pencil squid.

I grew up catching both species during winter nights on the Redcliffe Jetty and Shorncliffe Pier.

The tiger squid is found along the entire length of the Queensland coast.

Squid in general have some amazing adaptations. They have eight arms and two longer tentacles. The long tentacles capture the prey while the arms manipulate the prey for consumption.

Everything squid do is done quickly. Squid have extremely high metabolisms and can extract oxygen from the water through their gills and through their skin.

They also have exceptionally fast growth rates but often significant variability in these growth rates between individuals of a species. Squid grow continuously during their lives and all food is converted directly to body growth with none stored as fat.

Healthy never tasted so good Sesame barbecue prawns with chilli jam + pear and herb salad

DOMINIQUE Rizzo is just one of the celebrity chefs appearing at Moreton Bay Food + Wine Festival, which is on July 30, 31 and August 1 at Apex Park, Woody Point. She has a passion for creating tasty, healthy dishes. Here’s a couple for you to try at home.

Fresh prawns with a zesty dressing and delightful salad are the perfect starter to any meal.

Ingredients

Asian Prawn • 20 large raw green tiger prawns, deveined, head intact • Good pinch of pepper • ¼ cup corn flour • 1 egg • 1 tsp sesame oil • 2 tsps tamari • ¼ cup Japanese rice sesame and nori seasoning • ¼ cup peanut oil for frying Salad • 2 cups mixed herbs – coriander, Vietnamese mint, Thai basil, spearmint • 4 red radishes, julienne

• 1 Lebanese cucumber, julienne • ½ cup daikon, julienne • 1 punnet shiso herbs • 1 Fuji pear, julienne • 1 cup green papaya, julienne or shredded • 2 long red chillies, deseeded and julienne Dressing • 5 cloves garlic • 60ml good quality chilli jam • 30ml rice vinegar • 60ml fish sauce • 65ml lime juice • 30ml lemon juice

Prepare salad by combining all ingredients and tossing together.

Prepare the dressing by combining the ingredients and adjusting seasoning to taste.

Combine the pepper with the cornflour and dip the prawns only on the outside into the corn flour.

Mix the egg with sesame oil and tamari using a whisk.

Dip the prawns into the egg mixture and then into the chopped sesame and nori.

Heat the oil in a fry pan and add prawns, frying on both sides until the sesame seeds are golden and prawns are just cooked.

Serve hot with a small amount of the salad on top

Place the cauliflower, water and butter into a small pot fitted with a lid and cook the cauliflower over a moderate heat until tender.

Allow to cool before blending it with the firm ricotta until creamy. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Heat another pot with olive oil and sweat off the onions until softened, about 8 minutes. Add the mushrooms and cook the mushrooms until all of their liquid has been cooked out.

Add the diced chicken and the thyme leaves and continue cooking until the meat turns white.

Stir in the corn flour and the chicken stock and simmer until the sauce thickens. Cook the sauce for 2 minutes and then turn off the heat.

Add the yoghurt, spinach and adjust the seasoning by adding salt and pepper.

Preheat the oven to 200c.

Spoon the chicken and mushroom mix into two oven-proof dishes or into a casserole dish and then spoon on the creamed cauliflower, covering the chicken and mushroom mix.

Bake for 20 minutes until the cauliflower is golden. This can also be done under the grill for about 10 minutes.

CAPTAIN’S CALL AFTER winning five in a row, we travelled down to Tweed to take on the Seagulls with plenty on the line.

A win would have seen us jump Tweed on the ladder and move into outright third however after a disappointing two-point loss (14-12), we dropped down to sixth proving just how close it is for a top four spot this year.

Tweed had some big inclusions including Titans’ Sam Lisoni and Herman Ese’ese in the middle. Our defence was well below the standard we set ourselves and, along with some poor execution in patches, made for a tough day at the office.

The playing group was quite disappointed as we felt the game was there to be won and our own mistakes cost us.

Origin weekend gave the team a chance to refresh and reset with the whole competition having a bye.

We now have a block of three games before another bye, which includes a huge home game against the top-of-the-table Wynnum Manly Seagulls (round 13 at 6pm).

With the Covid outbreak in Sydney, the NRL may go back into a bubble meaning we will be without our Warriors players for a period of time.

But, we have some great Dolphins players waiting to step up in what will be the most important few weeks of our season.

Round 12 is against the Capras in Rockhampton on July 3 at 5pm.

STORY KYLIE KNIGHT JAYDEN Nikorima owns his story, mistakes and all, and is using the lessons he has learnt to help young people find the right path.

He has come a long way since the devastating lows that followed a lucrative NRL contract, poor choices and a failure to take accountability and learn from his mistakes.

The 24-year-old debuted with the Sydney Roosters at the age of 19 on a contact worth more than $700,000 for three years.

“I was around drugs, alcohol, girls and I had a lot of money and no family around me. I got dropped in round 10 and it was proba-

bly the first time when my back had been against the wall. I’d never been dropped in junior footy and I didn’t really know what to do. So, I started hanging around people who made me feel good about myself.

“Those people were not rugby league-related, and they were the ones surrounded by drugs and alcohol. I got myself caught around the wrong crowd.”

Two incidents involving drugs and lying on a statutory declaration resulted in his contract being torn up.

He was later charged with drink driving.

It is a story Nikorima is not proud of, but it is his story and he now believes personal accountability is important. The Dol-

phins offered him a second chance and he was invited to take part in a preseason camp, where he took part in workshops run by professional development specialist Glenn Azar.

Azar spoke about his son, who has a disability, and made the squad appreciate how privileged they were.

It had a profound impact.

“As hard as it was, I reached out for help and it’s honestly one of the best things that I’ve ever done.”

Nikorima has not only grown personally, he is now working with Azar to mentor at-risk teenagers aged 11-17 years through camps and workshops.

“It’s pretty much to empower our youth. We found through the 500 kids we’ve

had on our camp, I think it’s 70 per cent have anxiety,” he said. “Our camps are to give them to tools to be able to deal with all the anxiety that’s coming and will continue to come and teach them to communicate. Nikorima said they were seeking government and private sector funding to continue this work.

A dislocated shoulder and subsequent surgery forced him to leave preseason training with the Warriors, earlier this year, but he made his return to the field a couple of weeks ago with the Brighton Roosters.

“I’ve got to get a few games in with Brighton Roosters and then I should feed in to the Queensland Cup side and hopeful-

ly make my way back in, whether that’s at the Warriors at the end of this year.

My goal this year is to get another preseason at an NRL club,” he said.

“I was always told footy should be No.2, all through growing up and it was always No.1. Now, all this personal development and helping these kids became No.1 and I definitely believe it’s helped my footy grow to a new level as well.

“Especially the last 12 months, my life has gone up.

I’ve done these camps, I’ve got back into an NRL preseason, I got engaged to my partner Christa and we’ve got a baby on the way now.

My life has changed, I can’t wipe the smile off my face.”

The 31-year-old, who trains at All Star Boxing Academy in PCYC Pine Rivers, faces unbeaten Paul Fleming in Newcastle on July 7.

It is part of the undercard to the super welterweight clash between Tim Tszyu and Michael Zerafa – billed as the biggest boxing event in Australia this year.

Zalewski’s manager Phil Murphy, from Oxmar Properties, said taking on Sydney-based Fleming would be a “tough fight”.

Fleming, 33, has won 27 and drawn one of his 28 professional fights. Zalewski has won eight and lost one of his contests.

RENEE Taylor, a former Redcliffe Leagues Hockey Club junior, says pushing the Olympics back a year may work in the Hockeyroos’ favour.

The 25-year-old will make her Olympic bow in Tokyo next month as one of eight Australian debutants, seven dual Olympians and one going to her third Games.

Taylor will have support on the Peninsula having played two seasons with the Redcliffe Under 11s, when her mum was in the club’s Division Three side.

She then moved to Kedron

Wavell and Commercial, made her Hockeyroos debut in 2015, joined the national squad in 2016 and won silver at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. The defender now has 85 caps.

Despite being based in Perth for five years, Taylor still goes to Redcliffe when she can and surprised Division Five players last year when turning up for a training session.

COVID made 2020 difficult for the Hockeyroos, who recently played New Zealand in their first matches for more than a year.

In that time the Tokyo Olympics were pushed

back 12 months, but Taylor said: “We are quite a young squad so that actually gave us an extra year to prepare in training and personally.

“This is an uncertain time with COVID, so we’ve had to set the bar high ourselves. Normally we’d have plenty of games in an Olympic year.

“The European teams have just played four or five matches.

“People have not seen much of us in the last 18 months. It hasn’t been ideal, but maybe it will work in our favour.”

Jade’s going for gold STORY NICK CROCKFORD JADE Wall is on the final leg of a long - and at times demanding - journey which has taken her from the softball fields of Redcliffe to the world’s greatest sporting stage.

Wall, a member of Redcliffe Leagues Softball Association, flew into Tokyo on June 1 with the Aussie Spirit Olympic squad on June 1 – seven weeks before the Games start.

After so little team time since 2019, they were the first Olympic athletes in Japan and are preparing under strict COVID rules in Ota City, with regular tests and no travel other than to training/matches.

It’s a far cry from 12 years ago when Wall first started playing in Redcliffe, but the connection remains strong.

Despite being based in Sydney, Wall registers for Redcliffe’s Open Women’s team and the club hopes she will be available for the State titles at Caboolture in October.

But, for now, her sole focus is the Olympic Games with matches against Japanese teams before the Spirit squad of 23 is cut to 15.

“We knew it was going to be a long haul and lots of testing,” said Wall speaking from Japan, “Before travelling we had two camps in Australia simulating these conditions.

Knox, whose career started at North Brisbane Polo Bears in Albany Creek 20 years ago, will be the first Australian woman to play water polo at four Olympic Games.

REDCLIFFE-born Kaylee McKeown is on her way to Tokyo as one of Australia’s biggest gold medal hopes.

The 19-year-old broke the women’s 100m backstroke world record at the trials this month, clocking 57.57 seconds and taking .12 seconds off the world best.

She also has two silver medals (200m backstroike and 4x100m medley relay) from the 2019 World Championships.

McKeown was in the Australian Crawl squad which was based at Caboolture Aquatic Centre (now renamed Burpengary Regional Aquatic Centre) working with coach Chris Mooney.

Both swimmer and coach are now at USC Spartans club on the Sunshine Coast.

McKeown is also a former student at St Paul’s Lutheran Primary School and Kindergarten in Caboolture.

Massive milestone for Yahoo GARRY “Yahoo” Spencer has become only the second Redcliffe Tigers AFL Club player to notch 300 games.

Spencer played his 300th game in the Councillors Cup, as the Tigers matched up against the Moreton Bay Lions, equalling the record set

by John “Peg” Pyatt in 2007.

Life member Dean Milstead said Spencer started at the Tigers in 2002, won a best and fairest in 2004 and had played in three premierships for the club.

“Yahoo is a rare gem, simply one of the nicest blokes you would ever meet, with a fierce competitive streak - Garry has been an essential piece of the Redcliffe Tigers organisation,” Milstead said.

The club celebrated the milestone with a guard of honour and a banner for players to run through, led by Spencer.

The Lions defeated the Tigers 6.6.42 to 8.1.49.

REDCLIFFE Triathlon Club (RTC) celebrated its 30th anniversary this month and has two new members in its hall of fame.

Past and present members gathered with families and supporters at Suttons Beach Pavilion, Redcliffe, for the club’s landmark on June 12.

There Ann Palmer and Cheyne Murphy were presented with plaques and welcomed into the RTC Hall of Fame.

Palmer is still doing triathlons at the age of 78.

She has been a long-time supporter of RTC and its junior program.

She has won state ands Australian titles and in 2000 carried the Olympic Torch through Redcliffe.

Murphy, who started triathlon in 2006 unable to swim 50m, recently completed a three-day, 515km Ultrathon.

Rising to challenge STORY NICK CROCKFORD PENINSULA Power coach Aaron Philp said his squad is ‘embracing’ the challenge of being top of the table with a 100 per cent record.

Power battled to a 1-0 victory at Logan on Friday night and – at the time of writing – were scheduled to face Gold Coast United at AJ Kelly Park yesterday.

Scarborough’s Shaun Richardson lands just metres from the spinning Paul Weel.

SCARBOROUGH racer Shaun Richardson was just metres from a dramatic crash in round two of the 2021 Australian Stadium Trucks Series in Darwin.

Richardson was right behind Paul Weel who hit a track ramp at an angle, after contact with the truck in front, spun and rolled six times before coming to a halt.

Remarkably, after a few seconds, Weel was able to drive his badly damaged vehicle back to the pits.

“I just jumped left as I saw him rolling to the right,” said Richardson, of Road Rage Industries in Kippa-Ring.

It was a mixed weekend for Richardson, who finished seventh in race one, third in race two, but did not finish race three of the meeting after being hit by an opponent who had a puncture when breaking.

Olympics in Paul’s sights STORY NICK CROCKFORD SKEET shooter Paul Adams aims to keep everything ‘normal’ next month as he prepares to step onto the world’s greatest sporting stage.

Adams, who lives in North Lakes and works at Kippa-Ring, is in the Australian team for the Tokyo Olympic Games (July 23-August 8).

He enters a two-week preGames semi-lockdown on Sunday, flies out to Japan from Sydney on July 19 and then goes for gold on July 26-27.

Throughout Adams will follow his grandfather Ian’s advice, now tattooed on his chest, to take it “one at a time”.

“I’ll try to keep doing things I would on a normal day,” said the 29-year-old theatre nurse at Peninsula Private Hospital.

“I’ll be talking to my partner,

my mother and my family … normal everyday things.

“Everyone gets nervous (at the Olympics) and there will be more pressure there, but I set small goals for my personal way of shooting.

“Those small things all add up in the bigger picture.”

And there is no bigger ‘picture’ than the Olympics where skeet shooters fire at clay targets mechanically launched from fixed positions.

They face 75 targets on day one and 50 on day two. The top six competitors go forward into the semi-final from which the medallists emerge.

Adams is training hard and in fine form having won his most recent event, the Queensland State titles, with a final score of 120 out of 125.
