Scene is set for Game of Drones A WORLD-FIRST game of drones, developed in the Moreton Bay Region, is being launched in North Lakes on June 16.

Drone-Games uses mobile net cages and easily-controlled microdrones in six structured games involving obstacle courses, bowling pins and Nerf guns.

Players can operate the drones by sight or use a phone screen showing the view from the drone camera. Managing Director of

Drone-Games at Murrumba Downs Darren Stone said it could be played by anyone of any age, no experience was needed and it was affordable.

This new concept is being unveiled at the Innovate Moreton Bay Monthly Social Catch-up at North Lakes Sports Club today, 3-5pm. Entry is free.

“Drone-Games is an opportunity for people to have fun with the technology by racing, crashing

and shooting the drones with nerf guns,” Mr Stone said. “After all, who hasn’t wanted to shoot a drone.”

Drone-Games gives anyone the opportunity to try drone technology without having to invest heavily.

“A complete beginner will be in the air in no time. Get a taste of the technology before choosing to dive in or not dive in. The drones are in a netted area and have cages around them.

Mr Stone said, so far, the youngest to try DroneGames was five years old.

“We thought he would last five minutes but he stayed sitting down for 45 minutes and was solving problems by the end of it,” he said.

Tuck into tasty events program STORY KYLIE KNIGHT TICKETS are on sale now for foodie events across six weeks as part of the Tastes of Moreton Bay program, which kicks off with the Moreton Bay Food + Wine Festival at Woody Point next month.

Tastes of Moreton Bay will be a culinary journey for foodies, offering a diverse program of local produce events and dining experiences, brewery tours, cooking schools, masterclasses and more, across the region.

It runs from August 1 to September 19.

Moreton Bay Region Industry & Tourism (MBRIT) has partnered with Moreton Bay Regional Council, local producers and businesses to create the tantalising program, attracting some of the nation’s most talented chefs to showcase the bounty grown, raised and caught in the region.

MBRIT Chairman Shane Newcombe said it had been a while between courses, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but local producers and venues were looking forward to being part of program, which would include more than 15 events.

“Tastes of Moreton Bay is the chance for local tastemakers and foodies to come together. Venues and producers will be hosting culinary events and masterclasses and offering special menus and creating food trails across the region, guaranteed to tantalise the tastebuds,” Mr Newcombe said.

“With an abundance of passionate local producers, amazing restaurants and boundary-pushing cafes on board with unbeatable

Moreton Bay Food + Wine Festival tickets on sale CELEBRITY chefs Matt Golinski, Alastair McLeod and Dominique Rizzo may be headlining this year’s Moreton Bay Food + Wine Festival, but the region’s cuisine will be the real star of the show.

The trio will be joined by ABC gardening guru Costa Georgiadis in what will be the festival’s biggest program yet.

Moreton Bay Food + Wine Festival is the signature event of the six-week Tastes of Moreton Bay program, and will be held on July 30, 31 and August 1 at Apex Park, Woody Point.

From unique dining experiences, cooking demonstrations, pop-up bars, live entertainment, food trucks, fireworks, masterclasses, and market stalls; the 2021 festival program

will satisfy everyone’s palate. Moreton Bay Region Industry & Tourism (MBRIT) has partnered with Moreton Bay Regional Council, Tourism & Events Queensland and sponsors to deliver the event in a new, bigger, COVID-Safe location, which will capitalise on Woody Point’s stunning sunsets.

MBRIT Chairman Shane Newcombe said the new location would give festival-goers room to move and was necessary to deliver a COVID-Safe event.

“We are really excited about the new location, which has big, grassed spaces with shade, giving us the opportunity to create some really special precincts within the festival site,” Mr Newcombe said.

“And you can’t rival the

“Joining us across two stages, during the festival weekend, will be some of Australia’s biggest household names including celebrity chefs Matt Golinski, Alastair McLeod and Dominique Rizzo.

“We’ll be serving up stage entertainment, roving performers, pop-up bars and food vendors, and the festival tipis are returning,” Mr

There is a limited release of festival weekend passes (entry for Saturday and Sunday), plus a free reusable festival cup with every adult weekend pass, for $30 + booking fee. STORY KYLIE KNIGHT BIG CROWDS are expected at this year’s Redcliffe Show, with a massive program of events to thrill visitors of all ages.

The show is on June 25, 26 and 27. There will be everything from traditional ring events and judging, to displays and competitions, sideshow alley and even a dinosaur park display.

The night program will feature a human cannon, wheel of death, high wire motorcycle, Aussie FMX Motocross and monster fireworks finale at 8.30pm.

Redcliffe Show Society president Garry Barlow said he was looking forward to a big show and welcoming people back after a COVID-19 hiatus last year.

Organisers have been working with Queensland Health on a COVID-Safe plan and introduced changes including online ticket purchasing, eftpos and QR code check-in There are reduced limits on patron numbers within pavilions and people are asked to adhere to social distancing at all times.

Entries are flooding in for exhibits and competitions.

Horticulture Head Steward Fay Greenstreet said she was keen to see what the peninsula’s green thumbs have produced in the past two years.

“We are looking forward to a bumper year of entries for our Horticulture Section,” she said. “The orchid society is going to give demonstrations on the care of orchids.”

and displays,” she said.

Needlework Head Stewards Julie Taeffe-Hill and Barbara Mapp said visitors could expect to see time-honoured exhibits of crocheting, knitting, fibre craft and demonstrations

by Spinners & Weavers Association members.

“This year we have a new addition to our Dolls & Toys Category. We will have, on display, a small collection of exquisite porcelain figurines from representatives of the QLD Porcelain Dolls Studio,” Ms Mapp said.

Cattle Stewards Sue and Phil Hood said a highlight of the show on Saturday was the beef and dairy cattle judging and the hotly contested Young Paraders and Young Judges Competition.

THE State Government has allocated $400,000 to the Scarborough Harbour Master Plan, with a vision to activate the harbour.

Community engagement will start in August 2021 to ensure residents can have their say and influence planning.

State Member for Redcliffe Yvette D’Ath said the Scarborough Harbour master planning process was part of the state’s overall vision to provide safe and efficient access and anchorage for recreational and commercial vessels, and promote commercial and environmentally sustainable activities.

“Our approach supports the marine industry, helps protect the local environment and will boost local employment and tourism,” Mrs D’Ath said.

Scarborough Boat Harbour is one of eight state-owned and operated boat harbours on the Queensland coast.

Mrs D’Ath said the master planning process for Scarborough followed a successful Manly Boat Harbour community engagement exercise in 2020.

“We received more than 550 responses during the Manly Boat Harbour consultation, and I hope to see the Scarborough community equally as involved in ideas for their harbour,” she said.

“Our focus is on listening to the local community and other groups who use or may want to use Scarborough Boat Harbour.

“This is an opportunity for the community to share their ideas on how the area could be better used.”

During the next 12 months, Transport and Main Roads (TMR) will carry out further investigations and analysis, including of consultation responses, to develop the Scarborough Harbour Master Plan.

STORY JODIE POWELL A MORETON Bay father has praised the Queensland Fire and Emergency Service’s education programs after his 10-year-old son raised the alarm when a fire broke out in the family’s kitchen.

Steve Butler said son Riley sprang into action, alerting adults who were outside, and herding visiting children to the household’s designated meeting spot near the letterbox.

Mr Butler said the family was entertaining friends this month, when the drama unfolded.

Mr Butler and a friend put out the fire with an extinguisher and smothered flames with a blanket, preventing the blaze from spreading through the home.

“If it was 30 seconds later, it could have been a whole different story – there were

flames touching the roof.

I’m super proud of him – he saved the day by letting the adults know straight away.”

Mr Butler said his family had used QFES plans and stickers given to his sons at school during a firefighter visit to devise a fire escape plan.

BUSINESSES around the Moreton Bay Region should review their security after several armed robberies in recent weeks.

Moreton District Crime Prevention Unit officer in charge Sergeant Sarah Grayson said there were many steps business owners and staff could take to improve their safety. “(You can) reduce the risk, or at least minimise the impact, both human and financial, of armed robbery on your business,” she said.

Sgt Grayson said businesses should bear in mind that no amount of money or property was worth risking a life.

“Limit the amount of cash held on the premises and publicise this fact with a sign,” Sgt Grayson said.

If a business is robbed, the police should be called as soon as it is safe to do so.

Planning focus in record budget STORY KYLIE KNIGHT

RECORD capital expenditure with a focus on improving planning across the region are expected to be hallmarks of Moreton Bay Regional Council’s 2021-22 Budget, when it is handed down on June 18.

At the time of printing, Dolphins News understood rates would rise but Mayor Peter Flannery said Council had worked hard to keep them low.

Almost $16 million in road resurfacing contracts has been awarded to two companies, including Narangba contactor Suncoast Asphalt and Downer Group to resurface 81km of road in 173 individual projects.

“This is a record Budget.

There is a record capital spend to keep our economy strong and deliver better roads and infrastructure. But that’s exactly what you’d expect in the face of massive population growth,” Mayor Flannery said. He said Council had spent the past year listening to the concerns of locals, so 2021-22 would be a year of action.

From this year, Council will restructure its operations to be focused on four new pillars: supporting a progressive economy; creating healthy environments; designing thriving communities; and delivering a well-planned region.

“We’ve already com-

menced this ambitious agenda by taking long awaited projects out of the ‘too hard basket’ and making them a reality,” he said.

“Like the construction of a new $68 million Youngs Crossing Bridge which will be complete by December 2023 thanks to a contribution of nearly $33 million from the Federal Government and a commitment from the State Government to secure $10 million.

“More importantly, we acted on feedback from locals to redesign and realign

this bridge and address community concerns.

“So, not only are we working to improve our relationship with governments, we’re also working to improve our relationship with residents.”

Mayor Flannery said that included hiring more staff to provide a better level of service, guaranteeing pensioner rebates to support older residents and acting on calls to award contracts to more local businesses.

“I hope residents can see that this Budget is about

creating a new kind of Council with a willingness to fix historical issues they have concerns about - like our planning scheme.”

He said Council would seek residents’ feedback on its review of building heights and car parking ratios, and it would be trialling a neighbourhood planning initiative, activating more parks and playgrounds and launching an interactive planning map.

“This Budget is a comingof-age Budget for our growing region,” he said.

Fees and charges 2021-22 MOST fees and charges across the Moreton Bay Region will remain unchanged or incur only a modest rise in the 2021-22 financial year.

Councillors signed off on a new schedule of charges at last week’s meeting.

Most fees and charges for 2021-22 reflected an increase related to the Consumer Price Index and predicted wage rises. Library fees remain unchanged, and overdue item and reservation fees will be scrapped.

The cost of registering a cat will not change, except for cats that are not desexed, which will incur a two percent rise. Dog registration will cost between two and 2.9 percent more.

Declared menacing, desexed animal charges will rise by 25.6 percent, to $339.

Fees for using the region’s aquatic centres remain unchanged, but food business licences will go up by between 1.7 and 2 percent At local cemeteries, the cost of new monumental graves for ashes decrease by 22.4 percent, while burying ashes in a lawn grave reduces by almost 31 percent to $2825.

Praise for business milestone MORETON Bay’s whale watching season was officially launched last week, as a tourism icon celebrated its 25th Birthday.

Tourism Minister Stirling Hinchcliffe, State Member for Redcliffe and Health Minister Yvette D’Ath, and Moreton Bay Regional Council Mayor Peter Flannery were aboard Brisbane Whale Watching’s vessel Eye Spy to celebrate the launch and the business’ milestone.

“Over a quarter-of-a-century, Brisbane Whale Watching, Captain Kerry and Eye-Spy have become icons of Brisbane’s tourism industry,” Mr Hinchliffe said.

“The breathtaking sight of whales breaching on Moreton Bay was a popular visitor experience for many of the 1.5 million international tourists per year sightseeing in Brisbane before the pandemic.

“We know the closure of the international border

has been tough on local tourism businesses like Brisbane Whale Watching.

It was terrific to see Captain Kerry take the first booking of our Brisbane Holiday Dollars initiative and then benefit from a further 650 bookings.”

State Member for Redcliffe Yvette D’Ath said whale watching season was worth millions to the economy each year.

“Eye-Spy has helped to build an important visitor attraction not only for Moreton Bay but also Brisbane Whale Watching’s Redcliffe base,” she said.

“Brisbane Whale Watching employs dozens of locals and contributes an estimated $5.18 million to the Redcliffe and Moreton Bay economy.”

Mayor Peter Flannery said visitors were assured of seeing humpbacks at their best in Moreton Bay. Captain Kerry Lopez said the business had come a long way since 1996.

Rockers to reunite for good cause ELECTRO-rockers Def FX will reform for the first time in two years, when they play at this year’s Rockin’ 4 the Homeless concert on July 17.

Frontwoman Fiona Horne said they performed a ‘Never Say Never’ farewell tour in 2019, and the upcoming show was proof they were right to choose that name.

It came about she lost her day job as a commercial pilot in the Caribbean last year , after seven years, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“It led me back to Australia and doing music again,

Horne is looking forward to singing the songs she wrote 30 years ago.

“We’ve got fans who are bringing their kids and we get to have a whole new mosh pit,” she said.

“I love that I still get to jump around on stage, at this stage in my life, and it’s great that I get to rock out with the Hoodoo Gurus and The SuperJesus at Rockin 4 the Homeless.”

The band does not have any other gigs planned,

other than a secret warmup show somewhere, and will relish this one.

“I’m (also) looking forward to seeing some of the local talent. This gig showcases up and coming bands. That’s what’s so great about this event. It’s a total experience and coming together and knowing that we’re doing this for a really good cause. I recommend everyone gets there early, like I will be.”

Fans can expect all their favourites and a few surprises.

“We want people to rock out like it’s 1996 again,” she said.

Holidays packed with fun at the Y STORY JODIE POWELL THE Y-Mango Hill Gymnastics Youth and Community Centre has kids of all ages covered for the winter school holidays.

Events Co-ordinator Jacqui Musiello said while younger children would be well catered for, special emphasis had been placed on creating programs for teens.

“There’s a lot out there for Prep to Year 6, but not much for kids in high school, so we’re filling that gap,” Ms Musiello said.

“I put it together thinking of my two 14-year-olds and what life is like for them so

they’re not sitting around on their screens.”

A Youth Holiday Workshop run by life coach and educator Sanford McMurray covers life skills, wellness, mental wealth and self-care.

During the life skills sessions, 13-21-year-olds can learn about growing a garden, automotive care, and cooking, while wellness covers movement, fitness, dance and circus skills.

Mental wealth sessions look at physical, emotional and spiritual health, with

self-care working with a beauty therapist to cover hygiene, skin care and basic make-up.

Renowned Tricking expert and Tumble coach Phill Gibbs is hosting two workshops – one for kids aged six-12 and the other for people over 13 – to get everyone moving.

Tricking combines gymnastics with martial arts and moves from breakdancing to produce an aesthetic display of tricks.

“Phill has been in the business for years,” Ms Musiello said.

“He’s been on Australia’s Got Talent and performed overseas.”

Rounding out the holiday offering are Drop n Shop sessions, where children aged five-12 can enjoy two hours of free play with qualified gymnastics coaches.

“It gives kids who are bored the chance to burn some energy – the coaches do some planned activities and there’s free play too,” Ms Musiello said.

Alex takes the crown MUELLER College pupil Alexander Charlton has bagged a swag of awards at an international pageant, winning nine of 15 award categories.

The 11-year-old from Rothwell is taking his success at the Diamond International pageant in his stride and said the most important thing was having fun and making new friends. “If anyone else was going to do it, I’d say don’t stress, just enjoy it, it’s all

about making friends,” he said.

“In fact, one of the other winners lives nearby and they’re hosting a charity event for Bravehearts and she has invited some of the winners to come and wear what we feel brave in.

“I’m going to wear the gold sequinned jacket I wore for the evening part of the pageant.”

Alex said he enjoyed the charity element of the event and raising money

for the RSPCA, his chosen charity.

“I had to do a speech (at the pageant) and actually help them, which I thought was special,” he said.

Preparing for the pageant was fun, with the hallway of the Charlton home commandeered as a makeshift runway.

“We have a very long hallway at our house and I used it to practice poses, my speech and media, which is my YouTube Channel.”

BRISBANE Seniors Online (BSOL) is appealing for more volunteer mentors to support its expansion in the Redcliffe and North Lakes areas.

Volunteers need to be confident to teach any devices running Windows, Android or Apple – or smart phones.

They must also be able to relate to seniors and those over 50 and ideally be around the average age of learners which is 74.

BSOL, which has been operating nearly 20 years, also runs a digital photography special interest group with monthly meetings and excursions.

BSOL provides computer and internet training for seniors and over 50s in the Greater Brisbane area, including Redcliffe and the Moreton Bay Region.

New learners have a $20 joining fee and a $45-a-year charge. Mentors join at no cost.

Exhibition of excellence returns LYNN Taylor’s love of painting was sparked when she received a paint by numbers set for Christmas at the age of 10.

“I was fascinated as I blended oil paints together,” Ms Taylor recalled.

The winner of last year’s Redcliffe Arts Society Exhibition of Excellence said her artistic ambition was put on hold as she was channelled into an academic stream in high school, only coming to life again while she was at teachers’ college and able to study art history and visual art.

“In my 30s I learned about acrylic and oil painting at night school for a couple of terms then at an adult art class while teaching in Beijing in my 50s,” she said.

THE Moreton Bay Region’s economic transformation will be led by frontline experts, after Council appointed seven business leaders from the private sector to form a taskforce to oversee implementation of its Regional Economic Development Strategy (REDS).

Taskforce Chairman Mayor Peter Flannery said, when it came to supporting business, government should take advice from experts.

“These local business leaders were chosen for their expertise across regional priority industries including advanced manufacturing, food and agribusiness, international trade, investment and marketing capability,” Mayor Flannery said.

Hospital upgrade opens to patients

A $3.2 MILLION upgrade of Redcliffe Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is now complete.

Minister for Health and Ambulance Services and State Member for Redcliffe Yvette D’Ath toured the refurbished facility on June 3, alongside the hospital’s intensive care nurses and clinicians.

“The ICU is where the hospital’s most critically unwell and vulnerable paediatric and adult patients are looked after, and Redcliffe sees

hundreds of patients each year,” Mrs D’Ath said.

“This upgrade has transformed this vital facility into one of the most modern and safest anywhere in Queensland.

This upgrade to the ICU is set to benefit around 550 patients each year.

Mrs D’Ath said the upgrade had delivered four new class N negative pressure isolation rooms, which would be used to care for patients with infectious illnesses – including COVID-19.

“The ICU now also has two class S separation rooms, providing additional patient separation,” she said. “Like other hospitals in South East Queensland, Redcliffe has cared for COVID-positive patients before and will often care for patients suffering from a range of infectious diseases and illnesses.

“Isolation and negative pressure rooms allow clinicians to treat these patients more safely.”

Oriti said the ICU team moved back into the renovated space a few weeks ago.

“Already they’re seeing the positive difference that this new facility is making for our patients,” she said.

Planning is also progressing well on the detailed business case for the hospital’s future expansion.

An investment of $1.6 million was contributed by the State Government and matched by the Federal Government to fund the ICU upgrade.

REDCLIFFE Floral and Art Festival will be back to its blooming best this week, when it returns after a forced hiatus in 2020.

Coordinator Liz Peters said last year’s event was cancelled due to COVID-19 restrictions and she was looking forward to welcoming visitors to St Peter the Fisherman Church at Clontarf on June 18, 19 and 20.

“This year we are expanding the festival to a larger outside area, where we have demonstrating experts who are going to teach, talk and explain how to improve your gardening techniques, look after and create bonsai trees, how to get your orchids to bloom and how to handle prickly cactus,” Ms Peters said.

“There will also be a large craft stall and demonstrating artists will cover acrylics, pastels and scratch boarding, as well as watercolours.”

STORY KYLIE KNIGHT SEVENTY years after this ‘Wishing Wheel’ was moved from Scarborough Beach Park to Humpybong Park for safe-keeping, while the park was being upgraded, plans are afoot to return it to its original location.

The ‘Wishing Wheel’ was a novelty, much like a roulette wheel, used by children and visitors in the 1950s. They would insert a coin, spin the wheel and make a wish.

The spinning mechanism was removed, when it was relocated.

It is not believed to hold any historic significance and was installed purely for the amusement of visitors and residents.

Scarborough resident Darryl Neild OAM stumbled upon the unusual structure, while walking through Humpybong Park with his grandson and wondered what it was.

He turned to the History Redcliffe group for information and then asked Moreton Bay Regional Councillor Sandra Ruck (Div 5) if there was a chance it could be restored and re-

Cr Ruck thanked him for bringing it to her attention and said a plaque would be added to explain the wheel’s significance. The spinning component will not be returned in a bid to protect little fingers.

“I just want to return it to its original site for the Division 5 residents. It was a small project, but one of those important community projects,” Cr Ruck said.

The work will be done in the next 12 months.

Jodi Parker was motivated to join the Leukemia Foundation’s Shave for A Cure in memory of a former colleague’s son who lost his life to the disease.

The impact of COVID-19 on the community had also spurred her on. “COVID came about and I thought ‘let’s do something to help someone,” Ms Parker said.

As well as raising more than $1200 for the Leukemia Foundation, Ms Parker has donated her cut hair to be made into a wig for people suffering hair loss.

Festival celebrates write stuff THE Fellowship of Australian Writers Queensland celebrating 100 years of supporting emerging writers with a Readers and Writers Festival in the Moreton Bay Region.

The festival, from June 18 to July 4, aims to foster the love of books and writing, encourage writing and reading and bring writers, aspiring writers and readers together.

Events and activities will be held at libraries across the Moreton Bay Region, including Deception Bay, North Lakes and Redcliffe.

The festival will officially open at the University of the Sunshine Coast’s Moreton Bay campus on July 3, with activities extending to July 4.

At USC Moreton Bay, there will be panel discussions for readers and writers, innovative storytelling events, book launches and competition announcements.

BUSINESS and Professional Women North Lakes will deliver a Women’s Empowerment Workshop later this year, after receiving a new Regional Economic Development Grant from Moreton Bay Regional Council.

The inaugural grant of $9990 will be used to host the event at Norths Leagues and Services Club on November 13 from 9am-4pm.

BPW North Lakes President Sara Gault said it was aimed at women in business or those aspiring to be in business.

There will be five guest speakers and the event will be compered by speaker, coach and author Sally Foley-Lewis.

The workshop will offer tips on how to thrive professionally and personally, find your voice and speak out, set healthy boundaries, master styling and first impressions, and much more.

“Women want to step up and make a difference to the economy of the Moreton Bay Region,” Ms Gault said.

Dragon Boat Festival a first STORY KYLIE

SEE dragon boats in action and enjoy free vegetarian food, fun games for the family, stalls and entertainment, when the Dragon Boat Festival comes to Clontarf for the first time on June 20.

The event, hosted by the Brisbane North Chinese Association and Multicultural Queensland, is on from 9.30am-3.30pm at Pelican Park.

Brisbane North Chinese Association President Carl Wu said it would be the first time the event had been held in the Moreton Bay Region.

“This is one of the most important festivals in Chinese culture as dragon boat competitions show a combatant spirit of nation and its people, especially to Chinese migrants who came to Australia a hundred years before,” Mr Wu said.

“Also, this festival will show the how the Chinese (culture) is getting into local communities as most the dragon boat paddlers are local Australians.”

Reliving moment in time STORY KYLIE KNIGHT FORMER and present Redcliffe State High School students and staff had a glimpse of life in the late 1970s and 2000, when two time capsules were opened during the school’s Reddi Showcase event on May 25.

son said one from 1977-78 was damaged as it was brought to the surface, but the contents were preserved.

“This contained letters from students from all grades. It also contained a letter from the principal about the Duke of Edinburgh medal, which the school participated in at the time,” Ms Williamson said.

“The second capsule, from the year 2000, also contained letters from all students as well the school uniform, newspapers from the day that it was buried, some textbooks and a set of drumsticks. The past students, who attended, collected their letters and some brave ones read them out.”

Ms Williamson said the

Redcliffe State High School Alumni Committee would digitise the other letters, so people could read them online. “These capsules were to be opened last year but had to be postponed due to COVID. We had many past students, teachers and principals present at the openings,” she said.

Book bonanza boosts reading rates

Pupils at Kippa-Ring State School were thrilled when more than 600 new books arrived.

BOOKWORMS at Kippa-Ring State School are rejoicing after a generous donation from Dymocks at North Lakes paved the way for hundreds of new books.

Learning Support teacher Jayne Shannon said Dymocks gave the school $10,500 to spend on new titles as part of its Library Regeneration Program.

spend that amount of money on books.”

Ms Shannon said pupils were excited to see the 642 new books arrive and the donation had boosted their enthusiasm for reading.

Kippa-Ring State School runs a Littlest Readers program each Thursday, with children from Bumper Bears Early Learning Centre visiting, along with siblings of pupils and their

parents to hear Ms Shannon read a story.

“Every week I have a theme and dress up in costume to match – I’ve been Suzee Sing Special Spy, a princess, Sly Sam. They have their library bags and little library cards and when they come in, they return their book, pick up their card and borrow a new book, and take home a colour-in picture to match the story we’ve read.”

TAMARA RANDLE 1. Looking back at previous years I have always wanted to participate in J2J and my inner saboteur has stopped me. One of my close friends asked if anyone would join her in walking. This made me stop and think about where I am in life, who I want to be, how I wanted my child to see at me. I want him to see a person who is willing to try.

2. My favourite thing about participating is that I am doing with my family.

3. Training is not the easiest when you have a child, you have to plan and most of the time it will be last minute. When he was first born I used to walk to the bakery and back during his nap time or to get him to nap.

Now exercise is walking or riding to the park for a play. Outdoor playtime with your child is exercise even if you don’t think it is.

4. Post-run food (or in my case walk) would have to be “Krispy Kreme” glazed doughnuts.

101 reasons to celebrate STORY JODIE POWELL WOODY Point’s Avis Hall may have missed her 100th birthday party last year due to COVID-10 restrictions, but she made up for it for her 101st birthday last month.

Daughter Avis-Ann said her mother marked the occasion with a party for 66 family and friends at the Belvedere Hotel.

“Due to Covid lockdowns, Avis’ planned 100th Party was postponed twice, in May 2020 and January 2021,” Avis-Ann said.

Born Avis Isabelle Rail at Mourilyan on May 20, 1920, Mrs Hall went to Mourilyan State School.

“Sometimes she and her brother Bill would ride their horse, Dick, to school,” Avis-Ann said.

“Homework was done by

kerosene lamp as there was no electricity there then.”

Mrs Hall began her working life at the Mourilyan Telephone Exchange, which required working every second weekend.

“Bill was an inaugural member of the Etty Bay Surf Life Saving Club, so when Woolworths opened a store in Innisfail she applied so she could have all her weekends off and join her friends at the beach,” Avis-Ann said.

Mrs Hall served in the Australian Army Medical Women’s Service (AAMWS), as a Voluntary Aid Detachment attached to Nursing Services, finding her way to the Atherton Tableland as a Nurse Orderly at the Rocky Creek 2/2 AGH. The Tableland was the

largest military base in Australia from 1943 to 1945, and the 2/2 AGH was the largest hospital in the Southern Hemisphere.

When she was discharged, Mrs Hall returned to Woolworths, where she worked until she married Eric on January 15, 1948 after meeting at a Woolworths Christmas party.

The couple had three children - Linda May, Avis-Ann and Graham Eric. Linda was born with Spina Bifida and died just three weeks short of her second birthday.

In 1973, Mr Hall was made manager of the National Bank Margate Branch and the couple, having lived in bank housing all their married lives, bought their first home in Woody Point, where Mrs Hall still lives.

THERE is no doubt about it – training your dog takes plenty of time and patience. The earlier you start, the sooner you will see the benefits both for yourself and also for your dog. Training your pet leads to a stronger bond between the two of you, a calmer household, and you get to spend more one-onone time together while concentrating on training.

Here are a few of the important benefits of training your pooch.

Boundaries It is important for your dog to understand what the boundaries are. There is no point getting frustrated or angry with them for jumping on your couch or grabbing food off the table,

if you have not been able to spend the time actively training them to learn not to do those things. Having a pet who knows what the boundaries are will make your home life much easier and ensure they are not getting into trouble for things that they simply don’t understand.

Socialisation Socialisation has many benefits, as it will help influence the behaviour of your dog and assist them in being happy, fear-free and well-adjusted pets who relate well to other animals, and also other people. Attending training sessions (either in a group or a private session) will help your dog get used to being with other people and also other dogs in a group setting. If you have a puppy, start this as soon as you are able to enrol them into a puppy class.

For older dogs, remember, it is never too late to teach an old dog new tricks.

Seek help by joining a group obedience class or contacting your local dog trainer.

Consistency The key to successful training is consistency.

A MANGO Hill-based notfor-profit organisation will use a Federal Government grant of more than $777,000 to help Aboriginal women and girls make their mark in business.

The organisation, founded by Dunghutti woman Carol Vale about five years ago, is called Tiddas in Business. Tiddas means sisters or very good friends.

Until now, Ms Vale’s core business Murawin has been funding the program in a bid to help Aboriginal women identify and pursue business ideas and build a platform for success.

The grant, which is part of the Federal Government’s Women’s Leadership and Development Program, will be used to encourage

Farewell to iconic star STORY JODIE POWELL MELINDA Schneider is relishing the opportunity to return to the stage after last year’s COVID-19 restrictions forced the postponement of her show, A Farewell to Doris Day. Schneider will be in the Moreton Bay Region for two performances this month – at the Bribie Island Hotel and the Redcliffe Entertainment Centre.

“I have been really enjoying this tour because the energy in the audience is different – they’re so grateful to be coming out,” she said.

A Farewell to Doris Day is Schneider’s tribute to the star, who died in 2019 at the age of 97.

“I perform 20 of her biggest hits and talk about all her films –

Calamity Jane, Pillow Talk – but also the sad parts of her life.

“She had four tumultuous marriages, which no-one knew about at the time. She really had a tough life with a lot of challenges – her third husband lost all of her money.

“I can relate to that – I have had similar experiences with choosing the wrong men four times in a row.

“I can relate to having that happy façade and being on stage all the time, the pressure to be the girl next door with all those things happening behind the scenes.”

Schneider said the show was very intimate, like doing a gig in someone’s loungeroom.

“I just love singing all the songs, they’re so classic and timeless and they’re all challenging to sing.

Schneider’s affinity for Doris Day began when she saw Calamity Jane at the age of eight

and was captivated by her talent and girl next door charm.

In 2003, Schneider was invited to perform at Melbourne’s Midsumma Pride Festival, where she performed songs made famous by Day. “The reaction that I got that day – I remember my mum (renowned yodeller Mary Schneider) being there and saying ‘you have to do a whole show’.”

But it wasn’t until after Schneider appeared on Dancing with the Stars in 2010 that the first iteration of a full-scale production came about.

“It (Dancing with the Stars) was nerve-wracking – I had to go into therapy before I even went on because you’re dealing with that humiliation.

“It’s hard enough being criticised privately, let alone on national TV. “But I loved every minute of it, I’ve never been fitter and I learnt to dance, which allowed me to do the show.”

STORY KYLIE KNIGHT WE may have had plenty of rain in recent months, but not enough of it has fallen over Wivenhoe Dam and we are being asked to conserve water around the house and in the garden.

The experts at Bunnings have given us plenty of tips and tricks, when it comes to creating a stunning garden that does not need too much water to thrive.

It all starts with garden design, soil preparation and plant choice.

DESIGN INSPIRATION:

A low-water garden can have a rich tapestry of colours and textures, and we can look to the Australian bush for inspiration.

Taking note of which native plants perform well in your local area is always a good place to start.

You should also consider succulents such as agaves, flowering aloes and echeverias,

to create sculptural forms and bursts of colour.

Consider the sun, shade, wind and reflective heat in your space.

This will help you understand your garden and how you can better plan and plant.

Yates horticulture consultant Angie Thomas said: “Group plants with similar water needs together; that way, if you do include a handful of thirsty plants, more water can be directed to that zone”.

You also do not need to fill every inch of the garden bed with plants. Try including hard elements, such as boulders of local stone and gravel between plants.

It will reduce the need for complete ground cover, will add visual interest to the garden and complements a naturalistic dry garden style well.

Aussies love lawns, but they are thirsty. Consider reducing the size of your lawn in favour of beds or borders with low-water ground covers.

You can even create a Palm Springs vibe, with a patch of

PLANT CHOICE:

For a successful dry garden, always begin by choosing plants that have evolved to deal with hot, dry conditions.

“Look for plants with silver, leathery, needle-like, hairy or waxy leaves,” Ms Thomas said.

Plants with these kinds of features tend to lose less moisture compared to large, lush-leaved plants. “Go for Australian natives such as wattles, banksias, bottlebrush, westringias, melaleucas and grasses,” she said.

“For a Mediterranean feel, lamb’s ears, rosemary, sage and perennial statice are ideal candidates.” Once established, these plants can survive periods of low watering.

Succulents and cacti are ideal contenders, too, and they can often go through long periods with little to no water and most have eye-catching flowers.

SOIL PREPARATION:

The best time to plant is autumn or spring, so plants have enough time to get established before things really heat up.

When planting, start by breaking up the soil well and mixing in compost and organic matter to encourage plants to root deeply.

Improving the soil can help boost its resilience in dry times.

“Regularly incorporating rich sources of organic matter in the soil, such as Yates dynamic lifter, can help sandy and clay-based soils retain more moisture,” Ms Thomas said.

After planting, she recommends applying a generous layer of mulch over garden beds, vegetable patches and pots.

“Adding a layer of mulch will help reduce the amount of moisture lost from the soil and, if using organic mulch like bark chips, they add valuable organic matter to the soil as they break down,” she said.

To reduce water waste, it is a good idea to install irrigation and a drip system will regulate the release and deliver water directly to the plants’ rootballs.

WATERWISE STARS Agave (Agave sp.): large, succulent leaves arranged in an elegant rosette. Colours range from dusty-greyish green to yellow and green stripes. A tough statement piece for any garden.

Coastal rosemary (Westringia fruticosa): With small needlelike leaves that grow into a tight, compact bush, coastal rosemary can withstand wind, sea spray, sun and dry soil.

Trim it into a hedge or topiary ball, or let it grow naturally into a loose mound.

Kangaroo paw (Anigozanthos sp.): This iconic Australian native has gorgeous boldcoloured blooms in varying shades of red, green, yellow or pink. Kangaroo paw grows best in a sunny dry spot.

Banksia ‘Birthday Candles’: Ideal for small spaces, its golden cylindrical flowers float above a sea of green foliage, growing into a low, dense shrub. Grow as ground cover or in pots.

IN THIS edition, I thought I’d try to give you a basic plan to eliminate a few factors that can ruin an otherwise hopefully successful fishing trip.

Plan your trip: Check the weather and tides. Make sure your intended location is going to be safe to fish, and the tide times should dictate your arrival and departure. Tides play a major role in fishing success as do times of low light and darkness.

Bait and tackle: Ensure you’ve got your bait either already sourced or readily available en route to, or at your destination. Ensure you’ve got all the tackle you need for your intended target species, PLUS, additional tackle for those fish that may turn up unexpectedly. This may consist of additional hooks and sinkers, or could extend to several different rod and reel combos.

Check your gear prior to leaving: If there are faults or problems, it’s much better to find them when they can be rectified at home, rather than out on the water or a distance away from parts or tools. Worst case scenario, your gear’s completely inoperable and you’re heading home without even wetting a line. The frustration and disappointment you’ll feel is especially magnified if it occurs on one of those glorious weather days that coincide with our available fishing time far too infrequently.

Stay safe: Make sure you’ve got torches, appropriate footwear, rain/cold weather gear and if required, safety/ first aid supplies, for your

intended location.

Boaties should check requirements for their respective craft and area, and ensure they’ve got everything they may need, and that it hasn’t expired and is in date. Even a local trip inside Moreton Bay can be a long trip home or wait for rescue if things go wrong. Having fished in remote locations where it’s several hours or even an overnight wait for a light plane or helicopter to get to you has reinforced this for me over the years. No fish is worth your life. Your people want you to come home. Guaranteed.

DR DAZZA of fish, including yellowfin bream, can be estimated by examining otoliths (ear bones).

Yellowfin bream are relatively slow growing, but not as slow growing as their cousin the black bream which is found in southern NSW and Victoria.

There is substantial variation in how old a yellowfin bream is for a given size. For example, age estimates by the Queensland Department of Primary Industries identify that a 30m yellowfin bream would likely be seven years of age, but it could quite likely be as young as four or as old as 12.

Six-year-old yellowfin bream comprise the most common age group harvested by recreational fishers. Overall, fish in the four to 10-year-old age groups account for most of the harvest (86 per cent).

It is fair to say that yellowfin bream are highly opportunistic in what they eat, and this is well known to anglers who can use a myriad of baits or lures to catch them. Their natural diet though is highly dependent on their habitat at the time.

For example, the diet of fish in mangrove and saltmarshes is dominated by shore crabs while terrestrial animals such as insects, spiders and lizards are also consumed.

IN THE last column, I discussed the movements of yellowfin bream around Moreton Bay. In this edition, I’ll cover age and growth, reproductive biology and diet.

Much of the early work on the reproductive biology of yellowfin bream in Moreton Bay was undertaken by Dr Barry Pollock who grew up on Redcliffe peninsula.

The reproductive biology of yellowfin bream is complex, involving a form of sequential hermaphroditism called protandrous (male first) sex inversion. This is not uncommon among fish species, and it is an approach which can maximise the reproductive output of a population.

Yellowfin bream possess an ovotestes in which the testis and ovary occur in separate zones within the same individual.

Most juveniles become functional males, but a small proportion of juveniles develop directly into functional females (primary females). Protandrous sex inversion commences after the fish mature when male fish change into female fish; however, some fish remain as males (primary males) throughout their life. The upshot of all this is that most small adult fish are males and most large adult fish are females.

Yellowfin bream are thought to become mature as males between 17.5–20.5cm fork length. The minimum legal size of 25cm total length allows over 50 per cent of fish to spawn once. This is a standard benchmark when setting a minimum legal size.

Everyone's an expert

Having worked through previous property cycles I have seen this before and this leads me to ask a number of questions.

How long will it last? Is the current phase sustainable? Is Covid the major driver of the change? With international migration largely on hold where are all the people coming from?

These questions are critical to understand what happens next. If we are having net migration inflows into Queensland (which we are) and most of the people seem to be coming from NSW and Victoria (which they are), then why are the markets in the Southern Capital Cities still rising?

Hard-fought win for Dolphins STORY KYLIE KNIGHT THE Dolphins Intrust Super Cup team has moved into fourth position on the ladder, after a physical clash against Burleigh Bears at Moreton Daily Stadium on Saturday night.

The side dug deep to come back from a 14-12 deficit at half-time to win the game 3224 in front of a home crowd including the club’s youngest players, who formed a guard of honour for the players as they ran on.

It was part of the club’s

annual junior march past, during which hundreds of youngsters march around the field before the main game.

Intrust Super Cup team coach Adam Mogg said there was plenty to work on before his team took on Tweed Seagulls at Tweed on June 20.

“I was really proud of the performance – to lose a winger in the first 20 minutes and lose a halfback in the last 10 minutes – it was a pretty gritty, tough performance against a really good Burleigh team,” Mogg said.

While he was pleased with the win, he said there were a couple of “ordinary, soft ties” and plenty to work on in terms of combinations.

“We’re moving players around based on availability and injury and we need to get better in some areas,” he said.

Even with five wins in a row, Mogg is looking for stronger performance from the team. “I feel like we’ve got heaps to improve on, I really do. It’s going to take time, based on availability and injury,” he explained “We only trained once last

week and that was without the Warriors players.

For this reason, I’m really proud of this weekend’s performance.”

He will not know who will make up the final squad until Friday, when the Warriors finalise their team list.

“But we know we’ll have a tough game against Tweed, who are in good form. It was a physical game on the weekend, Burleigh are a really good footy team,” he said.

While the Dolphins lost Setu Tu and Sean O’Sullivan to injury at the week-

end, no one was sent off as a result of the crackdown on high tackles. “We’ve been working on stuff in training in footwork to help us with that. It’s something the players are aware of.

I’m a supporter of it.”

IT WAS a massive night at Moreton Daily Stadium with our Dolphins junior march and our boys looking to make it five consecutive wins against a quality team in Burleigh.

It was a cold night but that didn’t stop a heap of Dolphins supporters and juniors hanging around to cheer us on.

A dropped ball off the kick-off and Burleigh scored within the first two minutes of the game, which was a less than ideal start.

In what was a quality Intrust Super Cup game, we went into half-time down 14-12.

We went through some adversity in the second half losing our winger Setu Tu and five-eighth Sean O’Sullivan to injury.

This meant a massive reshuffle however we responded really well and were able to come away with a 32-24 win moving us into fourth on the ladder.

It was a very special night for myself personally celebrating my 100th game with a win against my old club.

We now look to make it six in a row against Tweed at Tweed, which would see us overtake them on the ladder and move to third.

Billy’s comeback trail STORY NICK CROCKFORD BILLY Limov is back at Deception Bay Boxing Club and counting down to his first fight in two years.

The 33-year-old will face Kolby Johnson, who has not fought in four years, at Townsville Convention Centre on June 26.

Limov, who is stepping up to the middleweight division for the first time, said he “didn’t have to think about taking the contest, it just felt right”.

“I was offered a few fights in the last six months and

thought ‘no I’m going in a different direction’.

“But it was in the back of my mind, then (coach) Damian (Smith) called me with this fight. I’m so motivated and want to do this.

I don’t think I was ready to call it a day.

“I’ve opened a couple of businesses in the last six months and have been really busy working, but I have found time to come to the gym because I love it.

“I was in a better place when I was boxing. Now the stars have alligned and I want to give it a go.”

All matches in the current round of Brisbane Junior Rugby Union (BJRU) Girls’ 7s are being played at the Ray Frawley Fields, Clontarf, on Sunday.

This is the first season Redcliffe has fielded Girls 7s teams and as such the first time the entire BJRU Girls’ 7s cohort has come to the Peninsula.

More than 30 teams are expected to bring more than 200 players to the local fields for all the Under 12, Under 14, Under 16 and Under 18 games which will run from 8.40am-2pm.

It will be the biggest number of female players at Silcock St in a season when BJRU is fielding its highest number of girls playing the 7s rugby format.

Jack’s delight at Queensland jersey HARD work has certainly paid off for North Lakes State College (NLSC) Year 12 student Jack Hussey.

The 17-year-old half-back has been selected for Queensland’s Under 18 rugby union team.

Hussey was named in the Queensland City team two years ago but said making the

full state side was a surprise.

“I didn’t expect to be selected,” he said, “I thought I had worked hard and maybe had a chance of getting there.”

The national titles have been postponed as host city Melbourne only last week started to ease restrictions around its latest COVID lockdown.

However, Hussey will

still be presented with his Queensland jersey.

It has been quite a rise for the Year 12 pupil who played rugby league up to Under 13, before switching codes.

Since then he has represented Brisbane Junior Rugby Union Under 16s, City Under 16, Metropolitan North Under 18 and Norths Eagles Colts where he is in the Under 21 side.

Hussey has been a Signature Rugby Member at NLSC since 2016 and played for the first XV while in Year 10.

He captained the Firsts this year and has so far scored 116 points for the college.

However, Hussey is not looking too far ahead.

“One season at a time,” he said, “I’ve got a couple more years of Colts.”

Leaping high on carnival mission STORY NICK CROCKFORD THE countdown has begun for dozens of PCYC Redcliffe gymnasts with two more major championships now on the horizon.

Around 40 will go to Crestmead, near Logan, for the Gymnastics Queensland Combined State Championships on August 6-8.

Four weeks later 35 will go to the Gold Coast to take on the rest of Australia at the National Clubs Gymnastics Carnival, on September 8-19.

PCYC Redcliffe has an impressive Carnival record having made the top seven in 2019. The 2020 event was cancelled due to COVID. Those follow April’s state and last month’s national titles where PCYC Redcliffe members brought home a host of medals.

Beau (10) and Bryce (15) Edwards led the way – both becoming national champions, while representing Queensland, against Australia’s top trampolinists.

In the Under 17s, Bryce won the International and was third in Double Mini Trampoline (DMT). In the Senior Men, he was third in DMT team and fourth in Tramp Team.

puts family before Olympics FORMER Redcliffe Leagues star Matthew Swann has retired from international hockey just before the Tokyo Olympics, which was to be his swansong.

The 32-year-old defender left the Kookabur ras early with wife Roos to give birth to their first child on August 8, the day of the Olympic Closing

Ceremony. He was planning to retire after Tokyo 2020, but the 12-month postponement, due to COVID, has dented those plans.

“I am very comfortable with the decision,” said Swann, who made 207 appearances for the Kookaburras over 13 years, scoring seven times.

“With Roos and I having our first child, we were hoping quarantining would change or maybe the situation and state of COVID globally wouldn’t be as dire as it is at the moment.

“It is sad, but I will be cheering the boys on and

thinking about being there, but at the end of the day I have made a decision I think is right for my family.

“In 10 years I’m going to look back and still believe I made the right decision to be there for Roos, even though I’m not going to be there for my Kookas family which is sad. But everyone has been fully supportive.”

Swann was with Redcliffe Leagues Hockey Club from 2007-2009, playing 39 games in Brisbane League Division 1. In 2007, he won the Brisbane Hockey Association Best & Fairest Medal and Rookie of the Year

awards - and is still the only player to win both in the same season.

Swann also helped Redcliffe win the Brisbane League 1 Minor Premiership in 2009.

“Redcliffe looked after me,” he said, “it was a place where I was put in a position where I could perform.

The club helped me from being a state player to the national men’s team.”

Swann made his Kookaburras debut on October 19, 2009 against Malaysia and his 200th appearance on Australia Day last year against Belgium in Sydney.

REDCLIFFE and District Touch Association Seniors is calling for team nominations in its new competition starting on Monday, July 26 at Bradley Park, cnr Henzell St and Victoria Ave Redcliffe.

“I was surprised, I wasn’t expecting to score three in that amount of time,” she said. “It was right at the end of the game. I just got the ball and went for goal.”

Tiana played for The Lakes FC before joining Moreton Bay United’s SAP program in 2019.

She also played for Met North in the Under 15 Queensland Schools State titles at Hervey Bay at the end of last month.

Met North won the title and Tiana was one of four players from Moreton Bay United selected for the Queensland Under 15 Girls’ team.

Power turn to Smith STORY NICK CROCKFORD PENINSULA Power has appointed Alex Smith as its Head of the Women’s Football Program and NPLW (National Premier Leagues Women) Head Coach.

Smith will also oversee player recruitment, coaching education, junior girls’ academy and female player development.

The AFC A licenced coach has moved back to Brisbane after working at Melbourne City for the past two years as W-League Assistant Coach and Under14 Head Academy Coach.

Smith played in the US Major League Soccer, Malaysia, Australian A-League and NPL. He was part of Brisbane Roar’s W-League coaching team before heading to Victoria.

“There are no illusions as to where the program is at, my job is to show everyone where we are going and how we will get there. It is a challenge I look forward to taking on,” he said. “My aim is to create the most professional environment I can, using all the resources the club has to offer.”

Peninsula Power President Craig Feuerriegel said: “This has been a goal of the club to secure a coach with the experience and passion for women’s football as we continue to rebuild our NPLW program. Our club is very committed to the development and progression of the women’s game.”

Scarborough’s Shaun Richardson will be at Hidden Valley Raceway, Darwin this weekend for round two of the Australian Stadium Truck Series. Richardson, one of only 12 drivers invited to the series, was second, fourth and third in round one in Tasmania in April.
