JUST six months ago, Craig Williams says he was unfit, unhealthy and had reached a point when he needed to make a drastic change. When the 23-year-old stepped on the scales and saw he was 101kg, he decided enough was enough. “I started boxing. I guess I was so angry that I was unfit and unhealthy, I said ‘I want to fight, I want to be a fighter’. So, I joined a boxing gym (All Stars Boxing at Pine Rivers PCYC),” Mr Williams said. He also started running and before too long, set a

On June 26, his 24th birthday, he will do just that, running from the Redcliffe Jetty to Tingalpa and back to raise money for Teen Challenge. It will be part of the charity’s What’s Your 50? campaign to mark its 50th birthday. The organisation helps young people rebuild their lives. “I’d already come up with
running the 100km, so it’s What’s Your 50 x 2,” Mr Williams said. “I don’t know why I decided to do 100km. I did my first half marathon a couple of months ago and then I did another one the week after, and then I did another one two days later. I said, ‘great, I can do this’. “Four weeks after that, I did a marathon distance. I just ran for four and a half hours.” The Redcliffe resident’s former physical education teacher now runs 100km races and has been providing helpful tips. “Surprisingly, the thing I’m least stressed about is
doing the distance. Because it’s my birthday, and I was going to organise some drinks with my friends afterwards, I’m trying to organise what time to book the table for because I don’t know how long it’s going to take. That’s my biggest concern,” he said. “Doing it on my birthday is more incentive to actually get it done.” Mr Williams has lost 30kg, is feeling good and has started a Bachelor of Business degree. He thanked his employer, Warner Pool and Spa Care, for sponsoring him and supporting his run and training.

Sharing the magic of whale watching for 25 years Captain Kerry Lopez can’t wait for the 2021 season to begin.
STORY JODIE POWELL

BRISBANE Whale Watching Captain Kerry Lopez has seen many changes since she launched her business on the waters of Moreton Bay 25 years ago. Chief among them is a surge in the whale population making the migration north to warmer breeding waters – as well as an increase in the time they spend feeding, birthing and bonding in the bay. “The most powerful thing I have been able to watch is the whales and the population coming back to full recovery,” Ms Lopez said. “When I first started, we would take
visit brisbanewhalewatching. com.au an hour and a half to find the whales – now it takes 20 minutes. “The water is warmer, so they don’t need to travel as far north.” Ms Lopez is looking forward to welcoming passengers aboard Eye Spy – the state-of-the-art purpose-built catamaran – as she prepares to celebrate Brisbane Whale Watching’s 25th birthday and share the magic of observing the giants of the sea up close. “Sometimes I ask myself ‘how did I get this lucky?’,”
Ms Lopez said. “You never get sick of it; you never get used to it. “It’s gone so quickly, I think because it’s 25 years of excitement and being able to share the whales with locals. “We see mums giving birth and using the bay to feed their babies – some days there’s pods everywhere.” Commercial whaling of humpbacks was banned in Australia in 1963, and Ms Lopez said numbers had increased in the decades since. This year, she expects about 30,000 whales to pass through the waters of Moreton Bay. “It’s not just whales we
see, it’s turtles, dolphins, dugongs, hammerhead sharks. “It’s our backyard – we are so fortunate to have this marine park in our backyard. “Humpbacks are very surface active, they’re just loving clowns, they love the human interaction.” Ms Lopez said she and her crew never tired of spotting familiar whales each year and were privileged to witness intimate moments with the mystical creatures. “Watching one being born – we were able to film that on our drone a couple of years ago. “You can see them on the

FOUR owners of dangerous dogs are headed to court, after Moreton Bay Regional Council investigations concluded their negligence was so serious it warranted prosecution. Mayor Peter Flannery said 99 percent of pet owners did the right thing, but the one percent who flouted the law created a lifetime of trauma for dog attack victims. “We are pursuing legal action against these people because their negligence has created a danger in our communities, and we will not accept any threat to public safety,” Mayor Flannery said. “The details of these four attacks differ slightly, but in all instances the attacks on people and animals would not have happened if the dog owners were in control of their pets.” In one instance, a dog escaped from a yard at Kallangur and allegedly attacked a person walking their dog, then pursued them to a house, where the dog tried to get through a door. In another case, two dogs were involved in an incident with a Labrador in its yard at Beachmere, after which the Labrador was put down as a result of injuries. The third incident involved a dog and a person at Caboolture, followed by another incident involving the same dog, after which it was impounded and put down. The fourth case involved two dogs alleged to have escaped a yard at Kallangur. The maximum fine faced by the owners is $13,000.

Residents call for stop to speeding
PHOTO DOMINIKA LIS | Fatality Free Friday brought together emergency services personnel from around the region.
CONCERN is growing among residents in Mango Hill Village over speeding drivers, especially along Chermside Rd. One resident raised the issue in a letter to the Mango Hill Progress Association and it had support at the latest MHPA meeting. The letter said a family pet was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver on Chermside Rd. President Laurence Christie said the MHPA “strongly recommended people obey the speed limits”. Cr Jodie Shipway (Div 4) said she had asked Moreton Bay Regional Council officers to investigate the courteous driver,” she said. residents’ concerns regarding speed limits. “However, I suspect the Drivers travelling at 60km/h in a problem is more around 40km/h zone face fines of $266 and the loss of three demerit points. driver behaviour and it’s likely that even with a reduced speed limit these people may still do the wrong thing,” she said. “Speed studies are done in conjunction with the QPS (Queensland Police Read more Service) so if it’s a driver community news behaviour issue then they will more than likely inmoretondaily.com.au crease patrols to the area.”

ROAD SAFETY PLEDGE
EMERGENCY services from the Moreton Bay Region joined forces last week to mark Fatality Free Friday with a display at Bunnings at Rothwell. Police were joined by the Coast Guard, Ambulance paramedics and the Department of Transport and Main Roads to talk with people about the importance of staying safe on the road.
I promise that I will: • Always be fit to drive • Stay focused on the road • Scan the road ahead • Keep a safe distance • Drive to suit the conditions Moreton District Police Superintendent John Hallam said that with the state’s road toll higher than at the same time last year, Fatality
Free Friday was a sobering reminder to drive carefully. “Fatality Free Friday is a reminder to us all about the tragic consequences that can occur on our roads and the impact it has, not just on family, but on emergency service people who attend,” Supt Hallam said. “If people take just one message from the day, it’s please drive safely on the roads.” Moreton District Crime Prevention Unit officer in charge Sergeant Sarah
Grayson said Fatality Free Friday, in its 14th year, gave motorists the opportunity to take a pledge to commit to road safety. Sgt Grayson said there were extra hazards around the region, with major road works – many of which had reduced speed limits of 40km/h to protect road workers and allow construction vehicles to move around the site. “Allow that extra time and be a considerate and

Big names return for Rockin’ show STORY KYLIE KNIGHT THIS year’s Rockin’ 4 the Homeless line-up will bring three Aussie rock supergroups together to raise money for the community’s most vulnerable. The Hoodoo Gurus, The SuperJesus and Def-FX have signed on to perform free at the gig, which will be held at the Eatons Hill Hotel on July 17. It will also feature seven local bands including Team Utopia with rock guitar legend Bob Spencer, who has played with The Angels, The Skyhooks, Rose Tattoo, The Choirboys and others. Event director Dan Nebe and his team of dedicated volunteers organise the annual event, which raises money for The Breakfast Club of Redcliffe. The organisation provides more than 12,000 meals, emergency food parcels, housing and service information, supplies, phone charging and a safe space for connection and support for isolated and vulnerable homeless people each year. “The goal this year is to get The Breakfast Club mobile. members of the local Moreton Bay community who can’t get in to the centre themselves.” The Breakfast Club Director and Chairperson Michelle Gilcrest is grateful for the support. “Rockin’ 4 The Homeless (R4TH) does, as a community, something we could
not do alone. It pays the bills and changes lives. R4TH is everything to us,” Ms Gilcrest said. COVID-19 forced the cancellation of last year’s concert, but Mr Nebe called on his contacts in the music industry to record an album to raise money for the charity instead.
With the easing of restrictions, Mr Nebe has called on his mates again to bring “one hell of a rock’n’roll show” to the region. It will presented by One Agency. The Hoodoo Gurus frontman Dave Faulkner said the band was proud to be part of the event again.

Small business charter cements commitment REDCLIFFE Peninsula Chamber of Commerce president Brad Flynn has welcomed Moreton Bay Regional Council joining the Small Business Friendly Council initiative. Mr Flynn said the charter, signed last week, would complement the valuable work and practices already in place in Moreton Bay and enhance the region’s business profile. “The adoption of the Small Business Friendly Council Charter is an-
other step forward and demonstrates Moreton Bay Regional Council’s commitment to the REDS (Regional Economic Development Strategy) and to supporting local businesses and supporting #TeamMoretonBay,” he said. Moreton Bay Region is the largest council in Queensland to join the Small Business Friendly Council initiative. Queensland Small Business Commissioner Maree Adshead and local Cham-
bers of Commerce joined Mayor Peter Flannery to sign the charter as a commitment to continue supporting growth, resilience and innovation. “There was no way local businesses could have been prepared for the global market changes, border restrictions and forced business closures thrust upon them to protect Australia from the spread of COVID-19 and that’s why our Council acted swiftly to support our business
community,” Mayor Flannery said. “Time is critical in a crisis, that’s why we immediately refunded food licence fees, introduced a local preference policy to weight Council contracts towards local businesses and staggered payment plans for anyone struggling financially − we just knew we had to do whatever we could to keep cash in our community and help maintain a sense of optimism. “We are stepping up again today as a celebration of
Queensland Small Business Month, by signing this Small Business Friendly Council charter.” He described small businesses as the heart of the local economy and said when small businesses succeeded, everyone did. “They are more likely to use local suppliers, hire locals, and create local opportunities. “That’s why our call to action is to ‘Eat, Shop and Support Local’ at every opportunity.”
Mango Hill centre nears completion THE new shopping centre in Mango Hill Village is expected to open in mid-July. When it does, there will be an IGA supermarket, bakery and bottle shop. The indoor swimming pool is only for the adjoining childcare centre. The retail centre is at Kinsellas Rd West, off the roundabout with Lamington Rd and the proposed extension of Chelmsford Rd.

THE final stage in the multimillion-dollar redevelopment of Norths Leagues and Services Club is on track to be finished by August, offering diners flavours of the world, a standalone bar, and new children’s area. General Manager Troy Young said a new restaurant had been planned for about three years, but the COVID-19 pandemic had created a more localised market and management knew the time was right. It will be called The Precinct. “We have totally demolished our old
restaurant and designed a state-of-the-art kitchen, food outlets, kids’ facility and beverage offering from ground up,” Mr Young said. “It has given us the opportunity to double our floor space in our dining area for our members and guests. “Personally, this project has been one of the most exciting that I have had the pleasure to work on. But it is not just me – the excitement felt by the entire Norths team is truly infectious.” Mr Young said food was the fabric that brought Australians together. “Celebrating a special occasion, cheering on your
favourite sports team, or even just catching up with friends − food is present,” he said. The Precinct will feature four distinct dining outlets – German, Italian, Asian and Steakhouse. Executive Chef Brock Currey has worked across South East Asia, at a mix of five-star resorts and smaller local restaurants, gaining experience in the traditional and authentic cuisines of the region. He said the four styles of cuisine were selected after analysing what was popular on the club’s menu. “The choice is everything. Diners can expect quality
handmade food, cooked and prepared with authenticity and service with a smile,” he said. “For me, when you think of authentic cooking, Italian Nonnas spring to mind. My background training (and the training I hope to pass on to my chefs) is the original way of doing things - making as much as possible from scratch. Like the Italian Nonnas. Keeping the menus as authentic as possible is of the highest important to me.” The final stage of the renovations includes a standalone bar area including a gelato bar and kids’ room named ‘The Jungle’.

Time to prepare for winter safety STORY JODIE POWELL KIPPA-RING firefighters are urging people to “take five to get out alive” during winter – the peak season for housefires. Senior Firefighter Shayne Enright said taking five minutes to prepare in case of fire could save lives. He suggested following three simple steps to prepare your household – checking that fire alarms work, preparing a fire escape plan with an agreed meeting point, and practicing the plan. “You can have as little as 15 seconds to get everybody out,” Mr Enright said. “An important step in ensuring your family’s fire safety is having working, interconnected photoelectric fire alarms.”
TOP TIPS • Ensure fire alarms are working • Prepare a fire escape plan • Practice the fire escape plan
Senior Firefighter Terry Moloney said it was important to identify two escape routes from every room and practice an escape plan regularly. “When we do fire education at school, we tell the kids to turn the lights out and practice when it’s dark, because many fires happen at night and cut the electricity,” Mr Moloney said. Mr Enright encouraged people to look out for neighbours who lived alone.
“Keep an eye on people who are vulnerable – the elderly and the young - and make sure they have an escape route. “Check on elderly people who are living alone, and if they have added security make sure they leave their keys in a safe, accessible place.” Mr Enright said kitchens were the most fire-prone room in the house with almost half of all fires starting there, but bedrooms were not without risk, particularly in winter. “Check your electric blankets – when they have been folded for storage that can damage the element, and frayed cords are a risk too.” Mr Enright said it was also important to ensure fireplaces and chimneys PHOTO DOMINIKA LIS | Firefighter Sam Dwyer says people should test fire alarms to ensure they are working. were cleaned.

Trial meets growth in demand GREEN thumbs across the Moreton Bay Region will reap the benefits of a program trial encouraging positive, sustainable living. Councillors voted unanimously at last week’s meeting to join the Grow It Local movement as a two-year trial. Founded in 2012, Grow It Local has 149 councils and more than 400,000 people taking part nationally. Cr Cath Tonks (Div 9) said the program, which encourages people to grow and share produce, would benefit the community. “You don’t have to have a big backyard to get involved,” Cr Tonks said. Grow It Local aims to reduce food waste going to landfill, build stronger communities and inspire health and wellbeing.

THE Olympic countdown has started for Redcliffe State High School teacher Chelsea Forkin. The 31-yearold flew to Japan on Monday with the Australian women’s softball team and is in a pre-games ‘bubble’. Next time we are likely to see her will be in July, wearing number 25 in the green and gold at the 2021 Tokyo Olympic Games. It is the world’s biggest sporting stage and may be the final time Forkin represents the national team as she will “probably” retire after her first and last Games. DECEPTION Bay Meals on Wheels will be one of the main beneficiaries when the Deception Bay Community Hall revamp is completed early next year. As part of the $3.7 million transformation, Meals on Wheels will have its own separate kitchen and working space. President Des Dewer said the facilities would be a boost for the community. Mayor Peter Flannery said the project was brought forward thanks to a $2.5 million contribution from the Federal Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program. Petrie MP Luke Howarth said project was a great example of multiple levels of government working together to deliver a vital outcome. Construction is due to begin this month.

able record in Olympic women’s softball. Australia has medalled every time it has qualified for the Games, winning bronz e-bronz e-silverbronze from 1996-2008. But never gold. “We are going with hopes and expectations,” said Forkin, who plays for Brisbane Bears and Queensland Heat, “we really want a medal − and our aim is gold. “We’ve been working really hard in the background to try and win it all. We don’t want to accept anything less.” Australia’s Open Women are ranked fourth in the world, but stormed through the qualifiers in China, two years ago. “We had to win every single game and we did,” said Forkin, who played in the US for Dallas Charge and Chicago Bandits in 2016-17. “It was the best softball we ever played.”
COVID-19 forced the Tokyo Olympics to be pushed back a year – a move which the HPE teacher says has been a ‘blessing in disguise”. “We’ve had the opportunity to get together more as a team, keep building our culture, keep practising, keep scouting our opposition,” she said. Olympic softball will be a far cry from Forkin’s junior days, playing baseball in Perth. She was in the Australian Open Women’s team at 15 – before switching to softball at 16. Two years later, she was in the Australian Under 19 team which won bronze at the 2007 Junior World Championships and had a “foot in the door” of the senior side. Forkin did not “make the cut” for the 2008 Olympics but has been in the Open Women’s team ever since, playing in five world championships and winning four national awards.

HUDSON Hudson came to Peninsula Animal Aid as a stray in February, 2021. He is a lovely big strong dog, who loves people but needs to be the only pet in the family. When he is excited, he can be a barker. He is still a puppy at play, but wary of other dogs. He loves to play ball, but when retrieving, prefers to keep it for himself. If you can offer Hudson a fur-ever home, please phone PAA on 3284 1927 and speak to a supervisor to arrange a meeting. All PAA dogs are vet-checked, desexed, microchipped, vaccinated and heartworm tested and treated, as well as treated for intestinal worms and ticks.

THE $18.8 million Nathan Road Sports Ground at Kippa-Ring has been named the AFL’s Project of the Year for 2020. Moreton Bay Regional Council received the Ken Gannon Community Football Facilities Award on May 13 from Mr Gannon, who travelled from Melbourne to make the presentation at the Redcliffe Tigers clubhouse. He had a decorated career across many areas of the game, including as Chief Executive of the Geelong
Steven Miles MP Murrumba
Cats and AFL Victoria. Mr Gannon spent much of the last decade of his career developing the AFL’s interest and partnerships in community facilities, leading outcomes related to more than 800 community football facility projects. Mayor Peter Flannery said Aussie Rules had grown significantly in Queensland in the past decade. “The new Nathan Road Sports Ground and facilities is a huge boost for the Redcliffe Peninsula and the 500-plus members who play
for the mighty Redcliffe Tigers, but especially for the women’s program which has boomed since receiving their own dedicated new facilities,” he said. “This is the third major Aussie Rules facility Council has built over the past 10 years, with our Burpengary and Brendale grounds playing host to AFL preseason matches, AFLW home and away fixtures and we’ve just signed up for nine VFL games to be played between them for the 2021 season.”
Head of AFL Queensland Trisha Squires congratulated Moreton Bay Regional Council on its delivery of another fantastic Aussie Rules football facility. “I know from AFL Queensland’s point of view, we’re constantly referring other councils to Moreton Bay in terms of operating practice, support for clubs and facility planning and delivery,” Ms Squires said. “Earlier this year the Queensland Government and the AFL announced a new $8m Grand Final Fa-

Maree’s right on track STORY NICK CROCKFORD GRIFFIN’S Maree Stephenson is six weeks into her remarkable 10 Desert Challenge – but the biggest tests may still be ahead. The 53-year-old has already cycled through some of the harshest landscapes in Queensland and South Australia reaching Marree, in South Australia at the weekend. Ms Stephenson is on schedule and now on the Oodnadatta Track, a 617km unsealed track,
heading towards West Australia, across the Tirair and Pedirka Deserts to Marla. Her aim is to ride 10,000km and raise $10,000 for Beyond Blue, the mental health and wellbeing support organisation. Many people Ms Stephenson has met en route have been inspired to make donations. “I think this has just been an introduction to rocky roads, to corrugated roads and bull dust,” she said, “you feel every bump and the wind has knocked me around mentally. “The days are so full and have been from the start, but I’m enjoying it. The last seven days (from Birdsville
to Marree) have been such a saturated experience. “The landscape is insane. Beautiful but harsh. You have to treat it with respect. It tests you, like with the puncture, no water ... I like it like that.” Ms Stephenson is travelling on her own, without support, overnighting in “wild” desert camps, but help is surprisingly close. “The caring out here is lovely,” said Ms Stephenson, who is bidding to become the first woman to cycle on tracks on all 10 deserts in Australia. “All drivers (on the Birdsville Track) have slowed until they know I’m okay. There’s contact with every car. I have been offered water, given apples, told where the next water point is.” Ms Stephenson was particularly grateful to one passing car. She woke one
morning to a flat tyre on her bike “Banjo” caused by a thorn from a tough desert bush. As she had stopped, silicone in the tyre was not drawn to the escaping air to patch the leak. Then she could not tighten a core valve. However, two brothers from Canberra pulled up and fixtured the problems. “I burst into tears,” Ms Stephenson said. “I thought was going to have to go back to Birdsville. “But experiencing the challenge is what this is all about. All your senses out here are taken to the next level. I love that closeness to the landscape. You’re not looking through a windscreen. It is real and it is stunning.” She left Woodford on May 2 and aims to finish in Birdsville on September 17 at the end of a 139-day ride to the west coast of Australia and back to Birdsville.

STORY JODIE POWELL MEL Fursman, Cathy Burden and Carol Atkins have clocked up more than half a century between them greeting visitors to the Moreton Bay Region. Volunteers at the Clontarf Visitor Information Centre, they were each honoured for 20 years of service at a morning tea held as part of
National Volunteer Week. Mr Fursman and Mrs Atkins have spent almost every Friday together for the past two decades, having started at Clontarf on the same day. They have forged a firm friendship, joining Probus together with their spouses and also holiday regularly together as a foursome. Mrs Atkins has developed a reputation as a pelican
whisperer, attracting the majestic birds to the regular 10am feeding sessions, where the pelicans are also monitored for injuries and other issues. “I have a gentleman who comes most days to watch – I enjoy all the people - you get happy people coming,” Mrs Atkins said. “A lot of them are regulars; we have a chat and find out more about the community.”
Mr Fursman said he learned as much from visitors as tourists did from volunteers. “What I love is that you meet people from all over the world. “(Before COVID) we have had people come out for our summer and we get to know them on a first name basis. “We (were) getting the best information in the
world about Europe – it’s an incredible place to work,” he said. Mrs Burden was introduced to the Visitor Information Centre by a friend who worked there. “I was at a loose end – I had just lost my husband and I needed to get out there and meet other people,” Mrs Burden recalled. “I started as a Claytons volunteer – I visited for
quite a while before I officially signed on.” Working full time, Mrs Burden volunteers on weekends two or three times a month. “I love meeting people, it’s another way of finding out what’s happening in your local area,” she said. Favourites return to our show STORY KYLIE KNIGHT WOODCHOP events are carved into the history of the Redcliffe Show, but they have evolved with technology and the popularity of high-energy timbersports. Co-Head Steward Tom Wilkinson said the show’s woodchopping program was one of the biggest outside of a Royal Show. This year’s bumper program will feature 25 events, including four Queensland titles. Mr Wilkinson said about 70 competitors would battle it out, including 10 women and children. Some of these will be high-profile interstate competitors from the Stihl Timbersports Series. “A lot of the guys that are coming are world champions,” he said. These include Mitch Argent from Blackbutt, who is the current world title holder in the stand-

ing block. He has won this three consecutive years, and only one of four who have achieved this. Redcliffe’s Jamie Head, the other Head Steward for the woodchop arena, will also compete and is the current world title holder in the double-handed saw. Victoria’s Laurence O’Toole, of the well-known woodchopping O’Toole family, has held many world titles include the underhand chop which he has won 11 times at the Royal Easter Show. “The best of the best you can get in Australia at the moment will be here,” Mr Wilkinson said. “The hot saw event is a pretty big drawcard. We were the first show in Queensland to run a hot saw event and this will be the second year we’ve done it.” It will be on June 26 about 3pm. Spectators will also have the chance to watch the springboard event, as seen in

It will be a chance to try out $20,000 in new standing block dummies, which are now made of steel. The old timber ones had been there for about 40 years. “They haven’t been used
and have been sitting there for 18 months,” he said. And he is looking forward to competing in 15 events including all four Queensland titles. Other Head Stewards are also gearing up for a big show, including Woodcraft head steward Valentine Millway. “The Redcliffe and District Woodcraft

Renewed focus for network FOR MORE INFORMATION visit redcliffebusiness network.com.au
REDCLIFFE Business Network has been relaunched with a new focus on building a true network that helps small and mediumsized businesses grow and support each other. President Lorraine Hollitt said it was now an incorporated notfor-profit organisation. One business per industry will be permitted, with exceptions for business types with different specialties. They will need to apply and provide referees. Ms Hollitt said the network would focus on generating referrals and collaborating to grow members’ businesses. “It formalises it more than it was before, so people can get more value from it,” she said. It costs $400 to join for one year; $200 to renew per year after that. Businesses can come along to two breakfast meetings to see if it is the right fit for them. They can then apply to join. In addition to breakfasts, the group will have evening catch-ups every six weeks at a different venue.

Plea to ban plastic lids
ON THE BRIGHT SIDE
TWO Deception Bay women are campaigning for dome plastic lids to be banned alongside plastic straws and cutlery in a bid to protect birds, lizards and marine life. Wendy Wallin and Julie Jess have a petition on change.org, which has more than 3500 signatures and are calling on the State Government to ban the lids found on takeaway drink cups and ice cream sundaes. It all started when a Corella, which was a regular visitor to Ms Jess’s garden, turned up one day with a dome lid stuck around its neck. Attempts to catch the bird, and free it, were unsuccessful and it vanished. Ms Jess believes it died. “I often find littered on my local beach, or floating in the shallows, hazardous fishing line and discarded takeaway containers, including these plastic ‘dome lid nooses’ and many solid ring seals from under plastic caps,” Ms Wallin said. “The risk doesn’t only lie in dome lids being trapped around the neck of a poor creature, they also resemble jelly fish in the water.

OUR state is about to debate Voluntary Assisted Dying. It’s worth noting what a blessed position we’re in to be having such a debate. It’s not always obvious, but such debates can only happen in stable, safe, egalitarian, pluralist, affluent, technologically and medically advanced societies, where our government isn’t about to use such legislation to snuff out someone’s life. While the debate might be heated, understand what an amazing country we live in to have such debates. That is something I think we can all celebrate. IAN Gammage has held some of the most senior roles in Lions and it seems he was destined to serve his community. Mr Gammage has been involved with the organisation for 29 years, joining North Lakes Lions about four years ago when he moved to Queensland from Canberra. His connection with community service goes back to childhood and he remembers helping at a local flower show, when he was eight years old. This service has continued into adulthood and throughout a career which has included time in the Army and with the Reserve Bank of Australia, public service and diplomatic postings to Moscow, Taipei and Hong Kong. He reached the rank of Major in the Army and it was during his service he met a Colonel, who was a member of Lions. “I’ve been buying their Christmas cakes for a while and I was interested in what else they were doing,” he said. I didn’t expect to be Council Chairman,” he said. Mr Gammage has travelled around the world with Lions and been inspired by the activities of clubs he has visited.

In his view, the district that takes in North Lakes is “particularly good”. “It’s unified and does a lot of grassroots work,” he said. He particularly enjoyed the nature of the North Lakes club’s work – helping individuals in need. “To me, that’s what Lions should be about,” he said. The Kallangur resident

The first was for his contribution in helping raise $5 million for tsunami victims in Indonesia and the second for his contribution to Lions’ governance and training. Coats and Jackets WINTER is officially upon us. Now is the time to get your winter warmers out of hibernation and be prepared for the colder months ahead. While humans can easily add another layer of clothing during winter to stay warm, our pets don’t have that luxury so it’s up to us to keep them warm and healthy. Here are some tips to help you keep them warm and safe during the cooler months.

Warm winter coats and jackets are available for both cats and dogs. The trick is to get your pet used to wearing them from an early age, if possible, so that they are not inclined to try to remove them or chew them. Pet coats are a great way to keep your pets warm during winter and can be worn day or night.
Warm bedding There are some great, affordable options for pet bedding available these days. You can purchase soft style beds and pet blankets from a variety of locations, and if you want an even cheaper alternative to blankets, you can even use some old towels that you no longer have a use for. If downsizing the family home is on your bucket list, there’s incentive to keep progressing with that goal with new homes now available at over 50s lifestyle community Freshwater by Ingenia Lifestyle at Burpengary. Community Sales Manager at Freshwater, Rebecca Carlow said the lifestyle community was giving new clients the next stepping stone to achieving their downsizing dream. “I love asking my clients the question, ‘what would you do with the extra cash in the bank?’ Head away on a holiday? Upgrade your car? Go on a shopping spree? Buy a boat or caravan?” Ms Carlow said. She said Ingenia Lifestyle had a real understanding of how to improve the lifestyle of downsizers, with the land lease ownership model allowing purchasers to own a new home at a more affordable price, giving them the opportunity to free up their money.
“The very simple and transparent land lease ownership model means there are no exit/DMF fees, there’s no stamp duty to pay and no body corporate or strata fees,” Ms Carlow said. “With just one weekly site fee to cover, our buyers have more confidence in knowing there’s no surprises. “Downsizers also have a lot more time to enjoy their new lifestyle with less cleaning and maintenance on their homes so they can start their next exciting chapter in life.” Living in an Ingenia Lifestyle community is all about getting the most out of life, being active, and maintaining independence and wellbeing. STORY JODIE POWELL A NEW North Lakes beauty salon is taking the guilt out of juggling children with finding time for a treatment. The brainchild of Ashleigh Kapper, Bubs and Beauty Salon provides free childcare onsite while parents are pampered. In the beauty industry for nine years, Ms Kapper realised how difficult it was for mums to find care for their children while they had a haircut, massage or manicure. “But it’s really important to have that self-care,” Ms Kapper said. “There’s no beauty salon
in Brisbane with a creche and there’s such a need for it. “Gyms have creches, so there’s no reason this wouldn’t work.” Bubs and Beauty offers free play dates on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, where people can drop in for morning tea and meet other parents while their children are cared for in the creche. All staff at the salon have Blue Cards and all creche workers have a child service certificate or diploma, first aid qualifications and CPR. For Michelle Lampshire, the salon is a godsend because it means she does not have to worry about a babysitter. She moved to Australia
from New Zealand about seven years ago, and while she does have some family nearby, her partner works six days a week and she doesn’t like to impose. “It’s great – I brought my five-year-old in while I had a facial and I nearly cried,” Ms Lampshire said. “It was the best facial I’ve ever had because I didn’t have to worry about my kids.” Ms Kapper said the salon had been designed, so some treatment rooms had windows overlooking the creche. “A little bit of noise comes through and the mums say it’s lovely to hear the kids playing happily,” she said. After their salon treatments, clients are

Self-portrait a journey of healing
STORY JODIE POWELL MARGATE artist Monica Rose Batiste had not intended to display the deeply personal self-portrait she spent months painting, let alone enter it into Australia’s oldest portrait award – the Archibald prize. But enter it she did, taking the portrait on a cathartic journey from Brisbane with stops at Coffs Harbour, Newcastle and the Blue Mountains to see family and friends. On the day of delivery, Batiste walked it across the Domain before finding her way to the rear of the National Gallery of NSW and the packing room where entries are received. “As we drove into the city, I was so nervous,” Batiste recalled. “I have entered a few times

through a courier – this is the first time I have taken my painting myself. “It was nice to be in the packing room – everybody’s painting gets turned to the wall.” Batiste began the portrait as part of her journey of healing from depression. “I painted it last year based on my experiences – I was never really going to display it – it was just for me. “It took months, I would put it aside and then work on it again. I cried a lot.”
I painted it last year based on my experiences Then Batiste wrote a piece about what depression felt like, which ultimately became the statement that accompanied her Archibald entry. “The more we share, the more connected we become and right now it feels like connection is important,” she said. “I want to be brave and share my truth so other women feel okay to. “The more we are true to who we are, to ourselves, the more community we become.” A sense of community is important to Batiste, who teaches yoga by the beach at Margate. The pace is a far cry from her previous life as a fitness instructor at a gym and has helped her deal with depression. “I ended up teaching yoga because of depression – I was a fitness instructor but developed chronic fatigue,” Batiste said. “I wanted to keep working so I became a yoga teacher – yoga turned out to be a very good healer and helped create the community that I would not have had otherwise – I never made friends at the gym.” Now in its 100th year, the Archibald is Australia’s oldest portrait award, with the winner to be announced on June 4.

Garden
Plant now for spring STORY KYLIE KNIGHT IF YOU want a garden bursting with colour in spring, now is the time to plant potted colour in the garden and containers. The Plant Shack’s Peter Popenko said it was too late to start thinking about it in September, when everyone else’s garden was blooming. “People turn up to the nursery in September, when the result of the growing time kicks in,” Mr Popenko said. “This is the time to start planting flowers. There’s a big range of flower punnets available.” He said the best picks of the bunch were geraniums, petunias, calibrachoa, lavender, gerberas, dianthus and euphorbias. Mr Popenko said now was a good time to plant these varieties because they would not need to contend with hot, humid days. They would also not be as vulnerable to pests, which are not as active in winter.
THE PLANT SHACK The Plant Shack is at the corner of Krause St and Deception Bay Rd, Deception Bay. VISIT theplantshack.com.au “These plants do particularly well in the cooler months and, in about 12 weeks, will show plenty of colour and vibrance,” he said. His key message is to think ahead and imagine how you want your garden to look in Spring. Potted plants: Mr Popenko recommends using a good quality potting mix. “Like wine, if you buy on price, you’ll get it right,” he said. Good quality potting mix has pre-mixed fertiliser, which helps plants perform well. But you still need to add control-release plant food when planting. Between one teaspoon and a tablespoon will do the job, depending on the size of the pot and plant. Mix this
through the soil and then pot your plant. Make sure you add liquid fertiliser every two weeks. Try to keep water off foliage, as it can affect flowering performance. Choose a position that is in the sun for at least half the day. Garden beds: Prepare the garden bed as you would if you were planting vegetables. Add a 2-4cm layer of compost and organic fertiliser such as Organic Xtra or even citrus food. Use liquid fertiliser every 2-4 weeks to give the plant a boost and promote flower growth. Fertilise again in 4-10 weeks, when buds are forming. “That’s when flowers have a real need for potassium. There’s a 17 per cent increase in their need for it,” Mr Popenko said. Use liquid flowering plant food such as Flourish, which is high in the mineral. General tip: It is important to remove old flowers as they finish. If they have a long stem, such as gerberas, cut at the base of the stem.
This is the time to start planting flowers

As the name suggests, you can load these sweet potatoes up with as many Mexican-inspired ingredients as you dare. Get the kids involved and have some fun.
Loaded sweet potatoes
Ingredients
• 2 medium sweet potatoes (scrubbed and dried) • 1 tbls olive oil • 400g black beans (rinsed and drained) • 1 cup grated cheddar cheese • Sea salt
• Cracked pepper • Optional: mashed avocado seasoned with lime and sprinkled with fresh coriander leaves, corn, coriander leaves, seasoned chick peas, sour cream.
3. 4. 5. 6. 7.
Preheat oven to 200 degrees and line a tray with baking paper. Halve each sweet potato length-ways, then brush with olive oil and sprinkle both sides generously with sea salt. Place cut side down on the prepared tray and roast for 30-40 minutes or until cooked. Remove the sweet potatoes from the oven, turn them over and allow to cool slightly. Use a fork to rough-up the flesh and slightly flatten the potatoes. Season with salt and pepper. Divide half the cheese among the potato halves, spoon the black beans or seasoned chick peas and cover with the remaining cheese. Return to the oven and cook for a further 6-7 minutes or until the cheese has melted and the beans are heated through. Remove from the oven and cover with your favourite toppings – mashed avocado, coriander, corn and sour cream.

Use a spoon to gently scrape the gills from the underside of the portobello mushroom cap and discard. Chop the mushrooms into small pieces and saute in a small amount of olive oil for 5-7 minutes or until browned. Drain off excess liquid and place in a mixing bowl. Add the broccoli, onion, garlic, basil, eggs, parmesan, breadcrumbs, salt and pepper. Mix until well combined. Scoop ½ cup of the mixture into the palm of your hand and gently shape into a burger. If it does not hold its shape, add a tablespoon more breadcrumbs. Place patties on a plate and repeat with the remaining mixture until you have made four burger patties. In a medium-sized non-stick pan, add enough oil to cover the bottom of the pan and heat over medium heat. ARIES
MARCH 21 - APRIL 19
The phase between two eclipses can be transformative. Next Thursday’s solar eclipse, the second of two eclipses, will bring a fresh chapter in a collaboration or even a new direction completely. For some Aries, a key decision will be on the table. A surprise or change of direction concerning your home, work, family or property will ring in changes.
TAURUS
APRIL 20 - MAY 20
You wish to gain direction and a sense of fulfilment. The good news is that next Thursday’s solar eclipse will provide insight into your circumstances from a practical, financial aspect. However, a change of routine or environment is likely to bring out strong emotions, so take time out to unwind. Research circumstances and avoid snap decisions.
GEMINI
MAY 20 - JUNE 20
Next Thursday’s solar eclipse signifies a brand new chapter for you. Being true to yourself involves taking calculated risks and making key decisions. Ensure you gain as much information as you can before making commitments. A new way to share space at home or elsewhere will mean you must reorganise work and joint duties.
CANCER
JUNE 21 - JULY 22
As one chapter ends, another begins. A work, health or daily schedule is soon to change, (if it hasn’t already). You may even be surprised by developments. A change in your personal circumstances (or your partner’s) may also be in the works, and if these create tension, avoid sudden decisions and base choices on facts and research instead.
LEO
JULY 23 - AUGUST 22
Prepare to turn a corner in a social or work context, as you’ll begin to see circumstances in a fresh light. New information or developments that create fresh perspective for you in your endeavours will encourage you to take action in new directions. Trust that a new structure in your life will emerge if an old one crumbles. Be positive.
VIRGO
AUGUST 23 - SEPTEMBER 22
Prepare for a fresh chapter in your status or even a new direction. You’ll enjoy being upbeat and sociable. Your interests could blossom so focus on activities you love. But if you feel some people cause intensity or wish to meddle, ensure you keep things light. You’ll enjoy surprises and news, gaining the chance to build fresh relationships.

SEPTEMBER 23 - OCTOBER 22
DECEMBER 22 - JANUARY 19
You may deepen a relationship with a family member or will discover a fresh interest that brings variety to your week. You may need to study or research a work or health situation. For some, there will be a fresh collaboration or a new way to manage your personal life. Avoid intense reactions to a change of situation and improve stability instead.
As one door closes, another opens. Get set to turn a corner at work or to change your schedule so that it suits you better. If a health issue has been on your mind, take a moment to research and proceed with the facts. You may experience a financial boost. Make a plan if you must make long-range changes. Avoid being impulsive with people who try your patience.
SCORPIO
OCTOBER 23 - NOVEMBER 21
Consider approaching those you share space with in a new way. You may be more adaptable than you believe, and it’s possible to breathe fresh air into relationships. If you’re unsure of circumstances, avoid gambling both financially and emotionally. Get the facts instead. Avoid snap decisions if intense emotions arise.
SAGITTARIUS
NOVEMBER 23 - DECEMBER 21
Next Thursday’s solar eclipse could revitalise your business and personal partnerships especially if you were born mid-December. This weekend, meetings with friends or family create a busy atmosphere and you’ll enjoy being spontaneous. But if a visit or conversation becomes difficult, take steps to recover your peace of mind.
AQUARIUS
JANUARY 20 - FEBRUARY 18
A change of tempo this weekend may be intense, so avoid flared tempers. You’ll feel ready to take a creative or family venture to the next level but will be happier to reveal your plans only when they are complete. Matters may be unclear in the realms of love and money, so find out more about what your decisions will mean long-term.
PISCES
FEBRUARY 19 - MARCH 20
Developments this weekend could bring out strong emotions. You’ll enjoy a favourite activity and romance could blossom, but you must avoid arguments as these will spiral quickly. You are ready to kickstart a fresh chapter at home or with family, while mid-March fish will be ready to make a new agreement with an organisation.

Hooked On Fishing and Boating Fishing
TONY LINCOLN
with
IT’S THE golden rule of fishing; the lighter you fish, the more fish you’ll catch. This applies to all aspects of our tackle – line, leader and terminal tackle all combine to our presentation, and the more natural a presentation, the more bites we’ll receive. As long as the weight of our line and terminal tackle are within reason for our target species, fishing lighter will almost always yield better results. We may lose a bit more gear, and the occasional fish as well, but overall, we’ll nearly always be in front. The heavier our rig, especially line and leader weight, the more fish we spook. We still want to tailor our rigs to suit the environment we’re fishing in to minimise losses. For instance, fishing a clean sandy bottom or channel edge, a lightly rigged bait that moves with the current provides a natural presentation as well as covering more ground. However this same rig fished in rocky or reefy ground will be prone to snagging up and result in the inevitable bust off. The latter scenario may be more efficiently fished by anchoring our bait with heavier sinkers or presented under a float or balloon to stay above the snags. Leader weight should be just enough to protect against either scuffing over structure or weakening from chafing against a fishes jaw or teeth during the fight. I regularly hear anglers talking about using wire trace for fish such

as flathead. This is overkill. I personally use between eight and fourteen pound monofilament or fluorocarbon leader, depending on my rig and the size of the fish I’m targeting at the time. The same focus applies to our main line. The lighter the better, although we do need to take into account the structure or challenges that a particular location may present. Think about where you can reduce the weight of your rig, experiment with and learn to use your drags and give fishing light a go. Hopefully you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the result. Thanks for reading again, and remember: Talk to old people, they know stuff you don’t. Talk to young people, they know stuff you don’t.

THIS is the first of a two-part column on yellowfin bream (Acanthopagrus australis). The yellowfin bream is one of the most important angling species in Moreton Bay and a popular angling target around Redcliffe, Deception Bay and Bribie Passage. The yellowfin bream belongs to the family Sparidae and there are about 155 species in the family. In addition to the yellowfin bream, there are a further four species in the family found in Queensland: snapper, fryingpan snapper, tarwhine and the pikey bream of more northern waters. Most coastal areas of the world have at least one species of sparid fish present. Globally, important recreational species in the family include the white steenbra of southern Africa, the common dentex of the Mediterranean and surrounding waters, and the sheepshead, which is found in the western Atlantic from Nova Scotia to Brazil and is most abundant in Florida. The yellowfin bream is endemic to the Australian east coast – meaning that it is the only coastal region in the world where the species occurs. They are found in a variety of coastal habitats including throughout river systems, along all the coastal foreshores of Moreton Bay, the surf zone and around rocky headlands. Let’s look at the likely movements of adult yellowfin bream in Moreton Bay in a given year: From October to April, they tend to be in the rivers and creeks (or at least adjacent to them) feeding in these diverse and highly productive habitats. The condition of the fish in October tends to be poor and they used to be referred to as “razorbacks”, when I was teenager at Sandgate. If there is substantial rain over the summer period, they do end up highly dispersed but they still tend to be more abundant in around the rivers and creeks. The spawning period for yellowfin bream in Moreton
DO YOU HAVE A QUESTION?
DR DAZZA Bay is in line with the winter months, with a peak in July to August. Spawning occurs at, or adjacent to, surf bars. As the day length shortens, the fish, from May onwards, are stimulated to commence their migration to their main spawning locations, although they may have already moved downriver, for example in the Brisbane River and the Pine River in March/April. They do not leave the rivers and creeks en-masse and not all fish participate in the migration, so there are some fish available in the rivers and creeks all year round. It is likely that some fish go back and forth to the principal spawning locations during the winter from adjacent areas. Whether the proportion of adult fish participating in the annual spawning migration varies between years is unknown. Yellowfin bream do not readily utilise the more open expanses of Moreton Bay and tend to hug the shoreline and this is where they can be targeted. When fishing the shorelines, you are fishing along their migratory path. Unlike sea mullet, yellowfin bream feed along the way and their energetic needs are likely to be higher, hence they are hungry and will readily take a bait. Why do they migrate to the surf bars? By spawning on the flood tide at surf bars, they maximise the dispersal of larvae throughout the system. It is a good breeding strategy. Most post-larvae enter the estuary at night during the full moon on the flood tide, and they transition from planktonic animal to a juvenile fish from August to November when they are 13-14mm total length. From September onwards, most of the spawning bream are heading back to the river and creeks. In the next edition, I’ll explain feeding, age and growth, and the reproductive biology of yellowfin bream. editor@dolphinsnews.com.au

Sunshine and Double Rainbows The other day I was driving to work and the most beautiful thing happened. It had rained just a little earlier and the sun was out and shining brightly. Off in the distance was a super bright double rainbow. Now at the best of times just a normal rainbow is fabulous to see, but a super bright, double rainbow, well that doesn’t happen very often and conditions have to be just perfect. I thought, “man, I’ve got to grab a photo of that”. Anyway, you are probably thinking, what on earth is Stephan on? Isn’t this little skit supposed to be about his adventures in real estate? Well stick with me here. Remember how I said conditions were perfect? Well at the moment the situation is fairly similar if you have a property that you’d like to sell. Conditions are just about perfect. We really are in double-rainbow territory. What happened next? The road forced me to turn a corner. I travelled for a few minutes in a different direction. When I looked back the double rainbow had disappeared and even the main rainbow was fading. I’d missed my chance. The perfect conditions to take the picture had passed. Things had changed and that is bound to happen with the real estate market, AT SOME
Residential Sales & Rentals
POINT. When will that be? Who knows, no one has a crystal ball and no one irrespective of how experienced they knows when with any certainty. So if you are thinking of selling, you really want to sell in double-rainbow territory, which is now. On another note, make sure the Agent that you choose has a proper strategy in place to sell to the best buyer not just the fastest ones. Sold in the first day is something we are seeing so much of lately and even if you think you’ve scored the dream deal usually it means you’ve still left many, many dollars behind (but this is a topic for next time). Enjoy your week and if you are thinking of selling soon, get a move on and give me a buzz. We can discuss how to best maximise your property’s true potential. Have a great week.

Juniors to shine in spotlight PHOTO DOMINIKA LIS | Luke Green, Jesse Green, Payton Stanworth, Mateaki Papani, Zane Stanworth and Chloe Stanworth are ready for the Junior March Past.

GAME DETAILS
UP to 300 Dolphins juniors will relish their moment on the big stage, when they step into the spotlight ahead of the Intrust Super Cup side’s home game this weekend, in a tradition forged more than 20 years ago. Representatives from each of the club’s 40 junior teams will walk around the field in their annual March Past on June 12 about 5pm at Moreton Daily Stadium. Dolphins Football Development Officer Steve Crawford said it was an important tradition that inspired the next generation of players and reminded

of kids who have come through our junior ranks playing in our senior grades and at the present moment too. “A lot of the players who will play in the Intrust Super Cup on Saturday, will have done the March Past themselves. It’s a good tradition. “It’s important that we are one club – the brand is right through from under 6s to the top level.” The March Past will happen between the Colts and Intrust Super Cup games, and then the juniors will form a guard of honour for their senior counterparts and run them out for their clash with the Burleigh Bears at 6pm.
Crew Legal is the official sponsor of the Junior March Past and will be presenting ‘thunder stix’ to all juniors as they enter the field. Managing Director Shane Crew said his team was excited to sponsor the event. “This year, we have secured a supply of Crew Legal ‘thunder stix’ for the crowd to bang away and make some noise in support of the Redcliffe Dolphins Intrust Super Cup team in their match against Burleigh Bears,” he said. “Our crew will be there to hand out 1000 pairs on the evening. As a local business, we pride ourselves on supporting the local community and have a particu-
lar interest in the sporting organisations that do so much for the health and wellbeing of kids in the local community.” Crawford said the event was a chance to thank the many local businesses, including Crew Legal and long-time major sponsor Andrew Reibelt, who supported the juniors. The club’s under 6s and 7s will have a chance to play at Moreton Daily Stadium in a curtain-raiser to round 16 of the Intrust Super Cup on August 7. Players from the under 8s and 9s will get their chance on August 28.
FANS packed Moreton Daily Stadium on Saturday night to watch us take on the PNG Hunters. It is always a tough and physical battle against PNG and this game was no different. We got off to the perfect start leading 22-0 in what was probably our most clinical half of football for the season. The Hunters got one back just before halftime, heading into the break 22-4 down. We knew the Hunters would not give in. We were ready to face any adversity that came our way and, with coach Mogg adapting very quickly to the new rules around high contact, we had prepared very well. PNG were first to score in the second half and it was game on. They were building a heap of momentum and, with 13 minutes to go, we had a player sent off for the rest of the game due to high contact. The boys knew exactly what we needed to do. It was a huge effort to only concede one try and win the game 2412. We had a chat a few weeks back and our record was two wins, three losses. Our upcoming games were Townsville, Easts and PNG and we knew this block was very important. We managed to win all three. Next up, we take on the Falcons at the Sunshine Coast before the Storm V Titans game. Come along for an afternoon at the footy and to support your team!

Former Redcliffe player Matthew Swann has retired from international hockey after 13 years with the Kookaburras. Swann was planning to step down after the Tokyo Olympics in 2020, but the Games going back 12 months due to COVID has promoted his decision, with wife Roos due to give birth to their first child in August. Swann finishes with seven goals in 204 appearances, an Olympic bronze medal, two Commonwealth golds and two World Cup wins.

Barry calls ‘stumps’ STORY NICK CROCKFORD
BARRY Stevenson, one of the peninsula cricket’s stalwart volunteers, has called stumps and stepped down from his position. For the last eight years, senior and junior wickets at Peninsula Cricket Club’s ground in Woody Point, have been prepared by Barry. Twelve hours a week, 48 weeks of the year, he has been preparing, rolling and marking senior wickets, with dog Bonnie alongside on the roller. He also created two 16-metre turf strips for the Redcliffe City Cyclones’ Master Blaster junior (ages 5-8) teams who play under lights on Fridays. Barry’s efforts led the Redcliffe venue’s wickets to become the envy of northside clubs, but at the age of 80 he is making way for the next generation of volunteer groundsmen. “The Redcliffe City Cyclones have greatly valued the support Barry has shown to junior cricket over this time,” said Cyclones’ President Darren Wheeler. “We were pleased to present him with a new club shirt as a small token
THE Women’s National Rugby League Championships, held at Moreton Daily Stadium last month, have been praised by NRL Player Pathways General Manager Brad Donald. Queensland dominated the Under 19 competition having both finalists. West Australia took the Open Women’s section. In total, more than 350 players and officials were on the peninsula for the four-day (May 20-23) tournament to identify Australia’s “brightest talents”. “The tournament was a huge success with players travelling from every state in Australia,” said Donald. “Players and staff were able to enjoy the great facilities in the Moreton Bay Regional Council area and the exceptional facilities at Redcliffe Dolphins and Moreton Daily Stadium. “The NRL is appreciative of the efforts of all staff and players that made the journey, and the warm hospitality within the region.” The Under 19 final saw Queensland Sapphires winning 16-4 against Queensland Rubys.

of our gratitude. “We sincerely wish Barry all the best and look forward to still seeing him around the club in a more relaxed capacity.” Despite having played cricket for many years in several states, Barry had no previous experience preparing wickets when he took over. “Queensland Cricket
came out when I started and gave me a hand and I asked a lot of questions,” said Barry, who has lived in Redcliffe for 24 years. “I went to seminars and other grounds … and asked a lot of questions. I’m told we have one of the best wickets in Warehouse (Cricket Association). “It has been very gratifying to be able to help out.”

Evans’ focussed on his Winton challenge STORY NICK CROCKFORD KYLE Evans, the Redcliffe-based Formula Ford driver, is ninth in the Australian Championship after Round Two at Wakefield Raceway in NSW. Facing a record number of entries, heavy fog, and temperatures down to -2 degrees, the damp track affected grip and
lap times. Evans, 16, was 14th in Race One, after starting in 13th and slipping back to 19th at one stage, with a fastest lap of 1 minute 3.672 seconds. That was followed by 13th in Race Two with a fastest lap time of 1 minute 2.964 seconds. Race Three was red flagged after a crash. Both
drivers walked away, shaken but unharmed. “It wasn’t my best weekend for racing,” said Evans, “there’s lots to learn and improve from the weekend. Round Three of the Australian Formula Ford
Miles’ sights on F3 drive STORY NICK CROCKFORD MILES Bromley has set his sporting goals and wants to reach them – by going fast. The 15-year-old from Newport is looking to step up from go-karts to the open-wheel racing cars of Formula Three (F3). With no direct step between the two, Bromley was invited for a test in a Formula BMW car with Tim Macrow Racing (TMR) at Winton, Victoria. Formula BMW is an entry-level for drivers, the same route Australian star Daniel Ricciardo took to Formula One teams Red Bull, Renault and now McLaren. TMR’s development program was “extremely pleased with Miles’ maturity, ability and car
knowledge,” said his father Grant. “They have invited us to test the F3 car when they next have a track booking.” If Miles impresses again his chance of a place in the TMR team for 2022 increases, though it would be budget dependent. Stepping out of karts for the first time, Bromley hit speeds of 180km/h in the two-litre, six gear Formula BMW car around Winton Raceway. “The car can go at 240km/h, but the track wasn’t right for it,” he said. “It was a lot faster and better than go-karts. “There was no racing, it was just a day to test my ability. I thought I started average but picked up more speed and driving skills as it went on. “I hope by next year to get a seat in Formula Three.
Championship is at Winton, Victoria on June 11-13. “I have never raced in Victoria before,” said Evans, “there’s a lot to focus on in preparation.”

It’s a matter of finding a team.” The best current option appears to be Tim Macrow Racing, a professional team based in Melbourne, which runs development programs for young drivers. It was started by Tim and his father Peter in 2005.
Tim raced until 2016 becoming one of Australia’s most successful Formula Three drivers. That experience would be invaluable to Miles Bromley, who only started racing karts three years ago. He has since won the 2020 Ipswich Cup, Triple Crown
Championship and was third in the Toowoomba Valley Winter Carnival. Bromley will take on his first endurance kart race at Ipswich on June 5 swapping the driving seat halfway through with a teammate.

Cheyne’s stunning debut in Ultraman PAGE 60 // STORY CONTINUED “THERE was so much stress in the lead-up,” he said, “the run scared me. I’d never run more than 42kms. I was thinking just see what happens on the way home.” Finishing on the soft sand of Noosa beach, Murphy clocked 23 hours seven minutes 33 seconds – well ahead of the thirdplace finisher. “The last 5kms was awesome,” said Murphy, “once I’d got over that last hill, I knew it was just back to Noosa. Nothing mattered. Even the soft sand at the finish.
“I’m glad I was with it at that point. Noosa beach had people everywhere. Everyone was clapping, my crew and my kids ran with me. “That was my first Ultraman and probably my last! It was totally different to anything else I have done.” Murphy was training 25 hours a week in the leadup to Ultraman - swimming 20kms, riding four or five times and two or three long runs. He had always played team sport, mainly rugby and baseball for caboolture, Pine Rivers and Redcliffe Padres representing Australia at the age of 18 in the latter. “This was a big life shift to a sport which sucks you in, but is very rewarding. You need a good crew behind you and there are great people at Redcliffe (Triathlon Club),” he said. Murphy’s first triathlon was at Bribie, a 300m swim, 20km bike, ride and 5km run. Since then he has done 10 full Ironman (3.8km swim, 180km bike, 42kms run) events and qualified for the 2018 Ironman World Championships in Hawaii, finishing in under 10 hours. Brothers making mark STORY NICK CROCKFORD BROCK and Tex Copeland are following in their famous father’s footsteps two decades after he helped make sporting history for Brisbane. Robbie Copeland was part of the Brisbane Lions team which in 2001 lifted the first of three successive AFL Premierships. He played 143 games for Lions scoring 39 goals and with the family living in Newport, is now turning out for Redcliffe Tigers at Kippa-Ring. His sons - both at Mueller College, Rothwell - are in Sunshine Coast Regional teams for Queensland Schools State competitions in Mackay and Cairns. Brock, 14, was one of 22 selected from 132 hopefuls for the Sunshine Coast Region’s 13-15 Years team which went to Mackay for the Queensland titles at the weekend (May 27-30). Brock’s side reached the semi-finals and the teenager is reported to have impressed the coach in his first state carnival while playing in defence. Brock made the district team after trials in February and the regional side following trials at Maroochydore in March.

Tex, 11, trialled at Tigers and then earned his place in the Sunshine Coast 10-12 Years side following a twoday carnival at Kawana in April. He made the regional side of 22, from 154 hopefuls, is now off to the schools state championship in Cairns on June 10-13, also chasing a
place in the state side. Robbie will be following both his sons to the titles. “I love seeing the boys play and succeeding in sport at this age,” he said. “I’ve not had a lot to do with it really. I played and can mentor a bit, but once they are on the field it is up to them.
“They have done well to get this far, but for me watching is definitely harder for me than playing.” What chance all three could one day play in the same side? “I’ll be really old if that happens!” said Robbie. “Brock is a couple of years away yet, so maybe. Maybe.”
