STORY KYLIE KNIGHT MARK Murray has played rugby league at the highest level, coached an NRL team and been a club administrator – he knows a thing or two about the game and firmly believes the time is right for the Dolphins to play on the national stage.

It is a view based on his 10 years as a player, coach and administrator at the club and how the Dolphins have grown to be a Queensland Cup powerhouse on and off

the field since then.

“I think it’s the right time for the Dolphins because they have worked hard over the past few decades,” Mr Murray said.

“They have diversified the business model, with the shopping centre and the fitness precinct, and they are in a very healthy financial position.

“From the television rights point of view, it’s the right time for the NRL.” Murray played for the Dolphins from 1983-86, before

an off-field eye injury ended his playing career.

But with 15 State of Origins and several Test matches under his belt, he was grateful for the moments the game had given him. He coached the Dolphins’ Colts in 1988 and ‘89 and the first-grade team in 1990, and was also an administrator.

Mr Murray said the club’s history and the depth of former players still connected with it gave it the Dolphins’ bid weight,

which was lacking in the other two bids.

Juniors such as Chloe Stanworth, 7, and Luke Green, 9, hope a local NRL team will create a pathway to play on the big stage.

“I want the Dolphins to be in the NRL, so we can get more people playing,” Chloe said.

Luke said if the Dolphins made it into the NRL: “more people can come and support the Dolphins and there will be a bigger population of Dolphins fans”.

STORY KYLIE KNIGHT THE battle is on to become the 17th NRL club and today we’re issuing a rallying call to back the Dolphins’ bid and help the Australian Rugby League Commission make the right decision.

In this special edition of Dolphins News, we outline the case for a Dolphins team, dispel some myths and tell you how you can help get the club over the line.

This is a moment more than 70 years in the making and your chance to be part of history.

The ARL Commission has started the bid process, with three clubs vying for one licence to join the competition in 2023.

Those looking for inclusion are the Dolphins, Easts-backed Firehawks and Ipswich-backed Brisbane Jets.

Moreton Daily, publisher of Dolphins News, has launched a community campaign to show the ARL Commission how much we want the next NRL team in

the Moreton Bay Region.

Our aim is to paint the town red and mobilise footy fans from Bowen Hills to Bundaberg.

Dolphins’ Chairman Bob Jones said excitement was building at the club and beyond.

“It doesn’t matter where I am, people are asking, ‘are we a chance of winning the bid?’,” Mr Jones said.

When he was in Mackay for the first game of the season, he was wearing a Dolphins shirt and a man came up to him and said the Dolphins had to win the licence. It happened again in Newcastle more recently.

“It’s not just Queensland.

It’s really encouraging,” Mr Jones said.

“From a local point of view, and within the club, people are excited. The people of Brisbane, I have no doubt, will get behind us.”

Mr Jones said the club prided itself on having passionate supporters and it needed them more than ever as it built its case for an NRL licence.

“It’s very important, the

• The Dolphins will continue to call the Moreton Bay Region home, with its base at Redcliffe – just as the Brisbane Broncos call Red Hill home.

“We have got a history of wanting to play at the highest level, the next league up,” Mr Murphy said.

first-grade team before the NRL granted the Broncos a licence and players left to play in the national competition in 1987.

“In all our strategic plans, our No.1 focus has been to play in the best competition we can. It’s been the Queensland Cup, but there’s now an opportunity to play in the NRL. It’s an opportunity that only comes along every 30 years or so. This is our best shot.

“We are the most successful club in the QCup competition, we know how to run a football club. Business-wise, we’ve been trying to get ourselves in the best position.”

The man driving the bid, former Brisbane Broncos Chief Commercial Officer and Brisbane Lions Commercial Operations Manager Terry Reader, said the Dolphins had been waiting for an opportunity to be part of the NRL since 1987.

“The opportunity has arrived and now we need the community to follow us, and support the bid, as we look to become the 17th NRL team,”

Building our economic future

Mr Reader said.

He said the club was ready to hit the ground running the moment it was given the green light, with all the necessary infrastructure in place, and a solid financial position to ensure it will be a viable NRL club.

“The club is very well set up and has all of the infrastructure to go tomorrow,” Mr Reader said.

He said the Dolphins were ‘NRL-ready’, would not be faced with high start-up costs and could immediately focus on recruiting staff and building a competitive roster of players.

Red and white still runs deep STORY KYLIE KNIGHT RENOWNED poet and Dolphins’ patron Rupert McCall has written several poems about his love for the club, which started in childhood, and is one of several high-profile supporters calling for the club to be granted an NRL licence.

Dolphins News spoke with him shortly after he recorded a video, at the old Hornibrook Bridge entrance, backing the bid.

“I guess I’m excited about the opportunity to bring my family to watch the Dolphins play at the highest level every second weekend at Moreton Daily or Suncorp Stadium,” Mr McCall said.

“I’ve grown up, thanks to my dad, with red and white in my veins and running through my blood. I played my first game, outside of the back yard, for the under-11 Dolphins. When we were kids, on game day,

we would line up with our backs against the fence with our autograph books to see our heroes – Bunny Pierce, Peter Leis and Tony Obst.”

He said when was a junior, he loved to run out of the tunnel and imagine one day he would be doing it for the Dolphins’ top side.

“A lot has changed, but the tunnel is still there.

It’s still the heartbeat – not the bricks and motar, but what it represents, the opportunity for young rugby league players, male or female to run out and harbour those same ambitions and dreams,” he said.

They could do that at the highest level with their club and that’s a prospect Mr McCall is really excited about.

The Dolphins have been a huge part of his life and featured in a few of his poems, including Mighty, Mighty Phins.

It was written on the

back of a drink coaster as the 2006 Grand Final win played out – mostly in the toilets at Suncorp Stadium but also on the bus on the way back to Redcliffe.

The side had not won a Grand Final since 1965 and for Mr McCall, “it felt like today was going to be the day”.

He heard a stage had been set up on the field and Chairman Des Webb was going to make a presentation to the team, so he realised he was up against a deadline and the adrenaline was pumping.

Mr McCall has also written an ode to Bunny Pierce as a thankyou to the club legend who never said no to the kids waiting after each game for an autograph.

He also wrote a tribute to the legendary Tosser Turner, ‘a great human being who had high ambitions for the game and his beloved Dolphins’.

Others are also sharing their favourite Dolphins memories and photos.

Dolphins News caught up with some big names of the game and long-time supporters. Here’s what they had to say.

The Dolphins’ unparalleled infrastructure, along with its home base being geographically distant from other clubs augers well for the club’s NRL bid, Andrew Reibelt says.

“One of the reasons it’s going to be successful is that we’re not on top of another entity.

“We have our own physical base, and also our own emotional base.

“Our infrastructure is better than most NRL clubs – it’s logistically the superior option.

“It would be a tragedy if we didn’t get the gig.”

A proud and successful history and promising future are the main reasons the Dolphins should get the nod, according to Chris Close.

“I’m Dolphins through and through. I think they are in a very good position to support an NRL bid and definitely get my vote.”

“It has supported players in each level of competition and produced players who have gone on to play for Queensland and Australia.

“Redcliffe is also in the middle of a very stable community, one that is growing and Dolphins have kept in step with that.”

Chris “Choppy” Close – Dolphins 1980-81 In James Houghton’s view, the Dolphins are the only serious contenders.

“I think the NRL would be mugs not to give it (the NRL licence) to Dolphins. It is probably the only club capable of supporting a new NRL team.

“The performances over the last 10 years have been so good. They have the financial backing and runs on the board producing so many great players.”

James Houghton – Played in 1965 Grand Final-winning team Brian Niebling believes the Dolphins are well positioned to take a place in the NRL, with independent revenue streams generating income to allow the club to recruit experienced players while nurturing new talent.

“Having the infrastructure around the club gives us plenty of money.

“And it will give local kids a pathway – there will be more starting spots for them in future.”

Bryan Niebling – Dolphins 1984-87

In Denis Brennan’s opinion, the Dolphins have the strongest bid out of all those who have made an application (for the NRL).

“They have the history, right from the Murrumba League to the Brisbane competitions and had so many great players who have come through the juniors to seniors and played in the NRL. “I actually feel confident (about the bid) and when you take into account the club’s financial position as well …. I can’t see any other club but Dolphins.”

Denis Brennan - Life Member Old Boys and Patron, Director Leagues Club, Vice President sporting club For Brent Tate, it is a ‘no-brainer’.

“The club is set up financially and ready to go. It also has a good junior base, which is very important … the numbers just stack up.

“I could rattle off 10 players straight away who have come from Redcliffe and had great careers … and that will be a dream for juniors. They can see that pathway.

“Redcliffe has a great footprint over the whole area and it supports that area. I absolutely love the place.”

Brent Tate – Dolphin junior Under 9-17

Redcliffe has a very good chance of securing an NRL licence, in the eyes of John Treeby.

“It would be a great achievement and I think they would do very well.

“Having the leagues club has made such a difference and the area is growing right from Sandgate to the Sunshine Coast.

“Redcliffe has also produced so many players. I played here with Artie Beetson when he was about 19 or 20. He went on to have a wonderful career and so have many others.”

The Dolphins’ proven track record of producing talented players and connection to the community stand them in good stead for their NRL bid, according to Greg Consecu.

“They’ve produced a lot of international players.

“But more importantly they have always had strong leadership in the football club and the leagues club, with a strong financial model.

“As well, the club is very focused on the community part of peninsula life.”

Greg Conescu – Dolphins 1985-87 Tony Obst says strong leadership and a history of planning for the future make a compelling argument in favour of the Dolphins NRL bid.

Obst says the club’s rise from the “pauper” days of playing at the Redcliffe Showgrounds to a world-class stadium precinct are proof the Dolphins are ready to take things to the next level.

“They have the right people at the top – they’re rugby league people and they are interested in taking the game forward – they deserve the opportunity.”

Leaders unite to back bid STORY KYLIE KNIGHT FEDERAL Defence Minister Peter Dutton, Deputy Premier Steven Miles and Mayor Peter Flannery signed a declaration of support for the Dolphins’ NRL bid alongside every politician in the region, from all levels of government at the Moreton Bay Leaders’ Summit on May 7.

The forum was the first of its kind in the region, focusing on growth, infrastructure and opportunities to thrive. A Dolphins NRL team was identified as one of those.

Mayor Peter Flannery said it was an emphatic display of what the region was willing to do to get the Dolphins over the try line. All 26 elected representatives have now backed the bid.

“The Dolphins have been dreaming of this day for 70 years and their business case is compelling,” Mayor Peter Flannery said.

“But with ARL Commission Chairman Peter

V’Landys announcing Expressions of Interest opening, we wanted to ensure our bid and the resolve behind it is impossible to ignore.

“We are one of Australia’s great rugby league heartlands, and locals rightly want to see a competitive team that can take Queensland to the top of the ladder. I’ll back the Dolphins to do that.

“A successful bid would bring huge economic stimulus, including investment from interstate, to one of Australia’s fastest growing local government areas and forge a new nationally recognisable identity that everyone in our community can be proud of.”

Federal Defence Minister and Member for Dickson Peter Dutton said the bid was compelling and he was proud to support it.

“I want Peter Beattie and I want Kate Jones and others, who have influence within the ARL, to support this bid,” Mr Dutton said.

“I think it’s incredibly important for local kids to have another club to follow.

“I’ve always been suspicious of people that change clubs, I was brought up with the Broncos and that won’t change but my No.2 club is the Dolphins but at the moment the No.1 club to bid is the Dolphins.

“This is needed, we need this club and all of us are here to support the Dolphins. Let’s hope that sanity prevails and they’re successful in their bid.”

Deputy Premier Steven Miles, a Broncos supporter, said Brisbane was big enough for two NRL teams.

“I think it makes a lot of sense to put a new team here in Moreton Bay – the Dolphins – and we’ll be barracking for both them and the Broncos when they play each other, the local derby, it will be huge,” Mr Miles said.

“I understand that as part of the bidding process, the NRL looks to which bids have the support of local,

state and federal representatives.

“They asked us to tell them that, so we thought we could both tell them that and show them.

“We’ve shown them that today by putting our Dolphins caps on, and Dolphins ties on, that we’re backing the Dolphins.”

Dolphins CEO Tony Murphy said he was humbled by the gesture and strong show of support.

“It puts our bid front and centre of the ARL Commission.”

Federal Member for Petrie Luke Howarth said the Dolphins were ready and well supported to enter the NRL. “The Dolphins are the full package. They have the structure, culture, history, clubhouse, stadium and support of the Moreton Bay people,” Mr Howarth said.

“No other South East Queensland team is as well prepared for an NRL bid as the Dolphins.”

THEY say pictures speak louder than words and, on May 21, we want social media to be flooded with photos of fans wearing red at work.

League bonanza comes to town STORY NICK CROCKFORD THE Women’s National Rugby League Championships are in Redcliffe this week, with 500 players and officials expected to pump $700,000 into the region’s economy.

Sponsored by Harvey Norman, the four-day tournament (May 20-23) will attract 14 teams fielding 300 of Australia’s “brightest talents” at Moreton Daily Stadium.

Open Women and Under 19 teams will come from the Northern Territory, South Australia, West Australia, Victoria, Queensland, New South Wales and the Australian Defence Force.

For the first time, an Indigenous Invitational side will take part – the First Nations Gems.

All teams will stay in the Redcliffe and North Lakes areas, spectator entry is free. The NRL, supported by the Dolphins and Moreton Bay Regional Council, will hold a free clinic for girls aged 8-12 on Sunday.

NRL General Manager Player Pathways and Jillaroos Coach Brad Donald said: “These four days are more important to rugby league and the NRLW than ever before. We’re on the cusp of expansions and there are potentially two or three more teams which will be starting preseason in six or seven weeks.

“That means we need more players for those teams and it could be anywhere from 80-100 players who have not played NRLW before.

“I guarantee we’ll see girls running around here who will bounce into the

NRLW in just weeks.”

Julia Robertson is a perfect example. She burst onto the scene in 2018, going from netball to the inaugural Broncos’ team and then the Australian Jillaroos in the same year.

“I’d played netball all my life but joined the Australian Defence Force (ADF) which was looking for (rugby league) players,” Robertson said.

With her first touch in her

first league match, playing for the ADF at the 2018 National Championships, Robertson raced 80m down the touchline to score.

“Looking back and I do think ‘how did that happen’?” she said, “but footy is growing and this is a great opportunity.

“This is where you can get seen. You never know who is watching, you never know what will happen.

Moreton Bay Regional Council worked with the NRL to bring the talent identification tournament to Moreton Daily Stadium.

“Home to the mighty Dolphins, more than 5500 local players and 14 junior clubs, Moreton Bay Region is one of Australia’s great rugby league heartlands and the perfect place to host the championships,” Mayor Peter Flannery said.

“Locals can cheer on

their Origin heroes while local businesses will benefit from more than $700,000 expected to flow into the local economy.

The National Championships has moved from the Gold Coast to Redcliffe.

It was last played in 2019 with six teams. COVID forced it to be cancelled last year, but the NRL has introduced Under 19s this season and expanded it to 14 teams.

Queensland Government Statistician’s Office for 2019-20 showed while the state recorded a slight increase in crime between 2018-19 and 2019-20, Moreton Bay fared better, with a 4.8 percent drop.

in 2019-20 – a rate of 11,495 crimes for every 100,000 people, compared with 12,068 reported per 100,000 the previous year.

Of the reports made, offences against the person fell 11.8 percent in Moreton Bay North compared with the previous year, while the state recorded a 1.5 percent drop. The number of sexual assaults across the region

fell by almost 39 percent in 12 months. Traffic offences were down by more than 9 percent, while other property damage, which includes graffiti, unlawful damage wilfully killing or injuring animals fell by just over five percent, compared with the state average of a 2.5 percent drop.

Mark Ryan said the research undertaken by the State Government Statistician’s Office would help police evaluate trends and emerging issues to deliver the best support for communities.

“By using the information in this report, police will be better equipped to respond in the best possible way to community needs,” he said.

“While this report shows that fewer Queenslanders are committing offences in the first place, the fact is, crime is still happening.”

Deputy Police Commissioner Steve Gollschewski said while there had been a two per cent increase in overall reported offences, the number of young offenders and unique offenders was down.

New home for Angel needing TLC STORY KYLIE KNIGHT THERE has been good news for a little dog whose owner died in a house fire at North Lakes last month.

Thanks to the efforts of Northshore Pet Resort’s owner Kylie Mackay, Angel has found a new home with Bevin and Betty Smith at Burpengary, who are already showering him with love.

Ms Mackay said it had been a perfect match and Mr and Mrs Smith were the right owners for an older dog needing some TLC. Angel is almost 12 years old.

“They are really genuine,” she said.

Angel was one of several pets inside a home at North Lakes, when the devastating fire happened in early April.

He was rescued and taken to North Lakes Vet Hospital, where he and the other animals remained for a couple of days after the fire.

Northshore Pet Resort then took Angel and one of the other dogs in, offering temporary accommodation.

“Whilst one dog was adopted quickly by a family friend, Angel was still in need of a home and Northshore provided his next of kin with free accommodation over the following weeks while searching to find a suitable family for his adoption,” Ms Mackay said.

“Betty and Bevin’s daughter reached out to me on the local community page, when she read my update about the pets in our care, to ask about suitability for her parents because they had recently lost their last dog and missed the company.

lic holiday to meet him and have a cup of tea and chat.

“They were happy to give an older dog a home, and told me that they were keeping his name as ‘Angel’ as Betty believes he is a gift from heaven. They have said that after everything he has been through, he deserves undevoted attention in a loving home

for the rest of his days.”

When Dolphins News checked on Angel, he had settled in to his new home since his arrival on April 29, and was most at home sleeping on Bevin’s lap.

“He’s training us,” Mrs Smith said.

She said he was friendly, calm and quiet and had been resting regularly

since his arrival.

“We’d like everybody to see he’s really settled,” she said.

“For him, we want to give him a good life for the rest of his life. Our aim is to make up for lost time and make his final years as happy and content as they can be.”

Mr Smith said they

watched Ms Mackay walk Angel around her yard before they met him properly.

“I thought he was fairly sedate in the yard with her.

How can you not take him home and give him a good life?” he said.

And a good life it is … Angel was sound asleep, on a blanket on Mr Smith’s lap, by the end of our visit.

Favourite ring events will return including horse jumping, a championship dog show, pig racing, woodchopping, cattle, exotic horse breeds and poultry judging, and Kgari Kelpie stud dog jumping.

This year’s show will also include a dinosaur park display tipped to fascinate young and old.

The animal nursery will return, as will Professor Wallace’s Puppet Show, Luke’s Reptile Kingdom, schoolwork, needlework, cooking, horticulture, arts, lapidary and woodcraft displays and much more.

The night entertainment program includes human cannon, wheel of death, hire wire motorcycle, Aussie FMX Motocross, and fireworks on Friday and Saturday night.

Dr Joel said one of the highlights of the ride was the final day leaving Woodford in mist before a “beautiful blue sunny day” for the ride to Caboolture and then Redcliffe Hospital.

“After cycling the many bumpy backroads and busy highways, the cycleways of the southeast were such a pleasant change,” Dr Dulhunty said.

“Arriving at Redcliffe Hospital was a highlight too, meeting up again with

friends and colleagues.”

Dr Dulhunty said there were physical and mental challenges on the route, but also mixed feelings as they neared the end.

“There is something exciting about life on the road and being in a new place at the end of each day,” he said.

“Towards the end, we couldn’t help but look forward to getting home.

“However, our last day of riding was so magical and the journey so rewarding

there was a thought at the back of my mind saying wouldn’t it be nice to just keep riding.”

Dr Dulhunty will continue donating $1 for every kilometre he rides towards the fundraising target.

HARD work has been a big part of Eva Waters’ 100 years, as have family and living on the Redcliffe peninsula.

The Peninsula Palms resident’s milestone birthday celebrations might have been delayed by COVID-19 restrictions, but she made up for during a ‘big party’ with family on May 8, a month after her birthday on April 2.

Mrs Waters remembers the rollerskating rink and merry-go-round on the foreshore and when Redcliffe closed on Wednesday

She and Mr Waters were both keen gardeners, growing their own vegetables at their Redcliffe home, in a bid to save money. It was a pastime they continued when they moved to Margate.

The couple had three

children Ian, Heather and Ralph, five grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Memories of these days flood back in quiet moments, as Mrs Waters reflects on a life lived well.

“I can’t believe I’m 100, I don’t feel like I’m 100,” she said.

Inspiring tale for the ages STORY KYLIE KNIGHT

ALAN Landau grew up hearing remarkable stories about his ancestors, brothers, who carved out lives and businesses in South Africa after arriving as teenagers on their own in the late 1800s.

In a bid to preserve these stories for his children and generations to come, and with some encouragement from his wife, he decided to write a book.

That was in 2014 and he has recently released the sixth and final book in the series, titled Langbourne’s Legacy. The series follows their story from 1876 to 1947 – through the Boer War, two world wars and the 1918 flu pandemic.

“I wrote it for the younger generation, it’s an easy read, I wanted them to appreciate the story,” Mr Landau said.

The Redcliffe resident said he loved hearing his father and grandfather speak of the brothers and their rags-to-riches story.

He recalled helping his father create a display honouring their achievements at home as a child – some of

“They were like child labourers in the UK, making cigarettes, so when they got to Africa on their own they thought, ‘what can we do’,” Mr Landau explained.

“So, they started making cigarettes. By day, they would roll them by hand and they sold them by night in the pubs and hotels. They ended up being bought out. They made a tonne of money.”

Mr Landau said they then decided to be traders in a new country to the north called Rhodesia.

“They caught a train to Mafeking bought some wagons and filled them up with stock and then walked to Bulawayo. It’s a three-month walk, so they walked through the bush,” he said. “That’s where the family began, in Bulawayo.

They set up their business. Every time they set up a business, some sort of rebellion or uprising would happen and they would lose their business and start again. They were quite amazing brothers.

“Then they called up their next two younger brothers, who came out as well, and they built this incredible empire and did so well.”

Mr Landau worked in his family’s business before moving to Australia. “Business letters was all the writing I ever did,” he said.

When he retired, he decided to give it a go and started with one short chapter.

Years of research has followed, but Mr Landau has enjoyed every moment and hopes his journey will inspire others to record their

own family history.

Mr Landau has a book distributor in South Africa and they are available on Amazon and from Dymocks North Lakes and Chermside.

He will be part of a panel during the Fellowship of Australian Writers Queensland Readers and Writers Festival, to be held in the Moreton Bay Region, in June.

A whole on stage

STORY KYLIE KNIGHT IT is the tale of a loveable thief with a heart of gold, and the musical Aladdin Jr will be loved by a new audience, when Mueller College students rub the genie’s bottle and unleash their theatrical talents next month.

The production, based on the 1992 Disney film and the 2014 Broadway adaptation, will be staged on June 4 and 5.

Mueller College musical director and music teacher Sharon Casey said she was toying with the idea of Beauty and the Beast, but she felt with Aladdin Jr she could have a larger chorus and involve more students.

The cast and crew, of 112, have been rehearsing for about 13 weeks.

The role of Jasmine is being played by Year 12 student Alex Lundberg Hall and will be her first major musical role.

Aladdin will be played by Kyle Armstrong (Year 11), the Genie by Asher Ghal (Year 10), Jafar by Adison Ransley (Year 11), Sultan

by Dylan Boughey (Year 12) and Iago by Jesse Vickery (Year 12).

“There’s lots of singing and dancing, sparkle and entertainment,” Mrs Casey said.

“The chorus is amazing, probably the best chorus I’ve worked with.”

The story follows Aladdin, Jasmine and the fasttalking, wisecracking

Genie as they discover mystical caves, take magic carpet rides, and outwit the evil sorcerer, Jafar and the witty Iago.

The production, adapted for young performers, includes favourite Alan Menken songs such as Friend Like Me, A Whole New World, and Prince Ali. Mrs Casey said the story resonated with audiences because “everyone wants to go from nothing to something - everyone wants to be seen and heard”.

It is also a classic good versus evil story.

“And of course, who doesn’t want to ride on a magic carpet,” she said, laughing.

The production will blend technology with traditional staging, in a first for the college.

The group meets every second Thursday of the month at 10.30am for a 11am start. There is usually a guest speaker.

Powerful play’s vision to connect audiences

STORY JODIE POWELL REDCLIFFE Musical Theatre’s latest production grapples with the themes of crisis and mental illness.

The award-winning Next To Normal is directed by Zac Crisan, who was behind last year’s sell-out Lord of the Flies.

“It’s quite exciting but scary because I’ve directed a play before, but never a musical,” Crisan said.

“It’s a bigger team, working alongside a musical director and a choreographer, making sure everything is spick and span, but sticking to my vision.”

Crisan said Next To Normal was set in America in the early 2000s and tells the story of a mum with bipolar depressive disorder dealing with her condition and its impact on her family.

Samara Marinelli takes the lead role of Diana Goodman, with Nathaniel Currie in the role of her husband, Dan Goodman.

“Samara is the best of the best – she’s a very talented singer and she’s a music teacher,” Crisin said.

He said the production dealt with challenging subjects such as suicide and drug abuse, but there were also come funny and uplifting moments.

“I chose Next to Normal because it’s a musical I have fallen in love with.

“There were lots of dark themes in Lord of the Flies and Next To Normal is also dark.”

Redcliffe Musical Theatre president Madeleine Johns said while Next to Normal had its Broadway debut in 2009, its themes of mental health and our need for connection seemed even more relevant in 2021.

“Despite some of the darkness of the story, the musical ultimately offers us hope and light – two things we need more than ever today.”

Irwin tribute goes global

STORY JODIE POWELL WHEN North Lakes artist Michaela Hill created a piece depicting the late Steve Irwin with his newborn granddaughter Grace Warrior, she never dreamt it would become a world-wide sensation.

The stunning drawing captures the Crocodile Hunter – who died in 2006 – with his tiny granddaughter, who was born on March 25.

Ms Hill posted a photo of the drawing on social media platform TikTok, as well as a time-lapse video of her creating the work.

The video went viral, amassing more than 1.1 million views, 283,000 likes and almost 3500 comments.

Ms Hill, who had asked people to share the post in the hope it would reach Irwin’s daughter, Bindi and her husband Chandler Powell, was stunned by the response.

“People started messaging me asking if I could draw their passed loved ones,” she said.

Ms Hill and her family visited Australia Zoo this month to deliver the precious drawing.

While they were unable to meet Bindi, Zoo staff were touched by the gesture and promised that Bindi and Chandler would be in touch.

Since the video was posted she has been contacted by people as far afield as America and the UK, commissioning her to create special portraits of babies with relatives who are no longer alive.

The mum of three was inspired

to start drawing memorial portraits after a close friend lost her daughter.

The magical result was the child depicted as an angel.

“I realised I have an affinity for drawing passed loved ones,” she said.

While Ms Hill said some people found the portraits a little unusual, they were treasured by those whose loved ones were no longer with them and she was honoured to be invited to create special family mementos.

“One said it meant so much to her because she had never been able to see her dad with his grandchildren.”

Working from photographs, the portraits are drawn freehand and take countless hours to complete – the eyes in each take more than two hours alone.

Ms Hill, who only started her business in January, already has bookings for memorial portraits taking her through to October.

PATIENCE and persistence are useful – but not essential – when it comes to growing orchids, according to Redcliffe District Orchid Society member Margie Beckett.

“I had a flowering orchid given to me for our 25th wedding anniversary – we’ve now been married 47 years – and it didn’t flower again until we moved up to Caboolture a few years ago,” Mrs Beckett laughed.

“It was on its last legs, and then it flowered.”

Mrs Beckett says while orchids are hardy, they are quite particular about being kept in the right conditions to thrive.

“I have grown up on the Peninsula and that’s where I lived most of my life, but then we moved to Caboolture and there’s a temperature difference of about three

passion for the exotic blooms was sparked by one plant about 40 years ago and her collection grew slowly while she was working.

“You might go along to an orchid show and something catches your eye and you buy one, then you buy another one.”

With more than 60,000 different species across the globe, orchids are the largest genre of flowering plants.

As she started learning more about growing orchids, Mrs Beckett expanded to raising them from seedlings, as well as hand pollinating.

“You have to be patient – a Dendrobium might take three years from the time you pollinate and a Cattleya takes seven years.”

Now, she has about 700-800 different orchids across three orchid houses.

“My largest house is 12x6m and covered with solar weave so I can control how much water they get, whereas the other two houses are open to the elements.”

Mrs Beckett said while winter

was reasonably lowmaintenance for orchids, a dose of fish emulsion could help prepare them for growing season in spring.

“I water them once a week because if you water too much you haven’t got as much sunlight and they don’t dry out as quickly.

“They need to dry out otherwise funguses can grow,” Mrs Beckett said.

Orchids need good air flow around their roots to prevent scale, aphids and mealy bugs, “You’re trying to replicate what they like in the wild – sometimes you don’t have success so you need to move them around and change their potting mix.”

Mrs Beckett said preparations were in full swing for this year’s Orchid Show, which was cancelled last year due to COVID-19 restrictions.

A lot of orchids only flower once a year “It was our anniversary show because last year we turned 50,” she said.

Members are readying their orchids for this year’s show, which is scheduled for September 18 and 19.

“A lot of orchids only flower once a year – hopefully when you want them to,” Mrs Beckett said.

• 500g lamb mince • 150g feta cheese, crumbed • 1 long rosemary stalk • 2 tsp sesame seeds

Preheat oven to 200 degrees and line a baking tray with baking paper.

Place the lamb mince, feta cheese and finely chopped rosemary into a mixing bowl. Season with salt and pepper and mix until combined.

Using a sharp knife, cut each pastry sheet down the middle (creating four long lengths).

Place a quarter of the mixture down the centre of each pastry half and roll to enclose.

Place seamed side down and sprinkle with sesame seeds before cutting each roll into quarters.

Place the sausage rolls onto the prepared tray and cook for 20 minutes or until golden and crispy.

Note: lamb mince can be oily. You can bake them on a cake rack on a baking tray and allow the oil to drip down. You can turn halfway through.

• ½ cup tomato sauce • 3 tbls Worcestershire sauce • 1 tbls apple cider vinegar • 1/3 cup brown sugar

Trim excess fat off the ribs and remove the membrane from underneath the ribs.

Season well with salt and pepper.

Set barbecue at 150 degrees for indirect cooking. Place ribs away from the heat source and add preferred smoking wood chunks.

Cook for 4-6 hours (with internal temperature of 92-96 degrees).

You can check if ribs are done by probing with a skewer. It should feel like you are pushing the probe through hot butter.

While the ribs are cooking, prepare the basting sauce. Mix tomato sauce, Worcestershire sauce, apple cider vinegar and brown sugar.

When the ribs are close to being done, apply a layer of sauce.

Allow this layer to become set, so it is tacky and then apply as many subsequent layers as you wish.

Remove ribs, when cooked, and rest for 10-15 minutes, before serving.

The Dolphins is a club connected with some of the game’s greatest players, including Arthur Beetson who once said seeing the Dolphins play against Easts in the NRL would be a dream come true. We take a look at the Dolphins’ honour roll as the club launches its bid for the 17th NRL licence.

STORY KYLIE KNIGHT FROM humble beginnings in 1947 at the Redcliffe Showgrounds to the rugby league powerhouse it is today, the Dolphins has been the club of champions, legends of the game who have gone on to represent their state and country.

Players like Arthur Beetson, who moved from Roma to Redcliffe to play for the Dolphins in 1964 and was part of the legendary 1965 Brisbane Rugby League Premiership-winning side, went on to play in the NSWRL and Australia.

He returned to the Dolphins in 1981 and became player-coach, when coach Frank Stanton left the club.

Dolphins CEO Tony Murphy said Beetson famously declared it would be a dream come true to see Easts and the Dolphins play each other in the NRL. Beetson is just one of a long list of league legends with connections to the club including Wally Fullerton-Smith, Trevor Harken, Kevin Yow Yeh, Greg Conescu, Mark Murray, Bryan Niebling, Petero Civoniceva, Peter Leis, Troy Lindsay, Tony Obst, Dick ‘Tosser’ Turner, Greg Oliphant, and the Bleakleys, Boxalls, Cherrys (including Daly Cherry-Evans) and Webbs.

The club has also had high-profile coaches including Ken Day, Frank Stanton, Arthur Beetson, Mark Murray, Anthony Griffin and Adam Mogg.

Redcliffe District Rugby

League Football Club Inc was founded in 1947, and in its first year entered Under 17, Reserve Grade and First Grade teams into the Sandgate Suburban Rugby League competition.

Through the 1950s it also played in the Kilcoy, Murrumba and Geraghty Cup competitions. In 1959, the Dolphins were accepted into the Brisbane First Grade competition.

The club won the Brisbane Rugby League Premiership for the first time in 1965, but lost all six Grand Final appearances from 1973-87, including Beetson’s final appearance in 1981.

Redemption came in 1994, when the club’s teams won four premierships. Grand Final wins followed in 1997, 2000, 2002 and 2003.

The club started playing in the Queensland Cup competition in 2006, beating Toowoomba in the Grand Final. It won the Grand Final again in 2018 and is the most successful in the competition, appearing in 11 Grand Finals and winning six premierships since 1996.

The club has always wanted to play rugby league at the highest level, something that has attracted the best players and coaches.

In this edition’s column, I thought I’d cover tides and their effects.

Different species respond differently to various stages of the tides, and our success at different locations can be very dependent on this.

For the best chance of a successful trip, I look at my intended location and target species and the potential responses in relation to the stage of the tide.

As a general rule, I like to fish an incoming or rising tide in most locations, as I feel the fish are switched on and actively looking for food more so than during a falling tide, when they may only be travelling to deeper water to reduce their exposure.

For instance, an incoming tide can provide access to reefs, weed beds, or sand flats that are exposed at low water and the associated food availability that come with these.

These areas can be identified at low water and returned to fish, once the tide starts to rise. When fish are moving up into previously inaccessible waters and feeding grounds, they’re quite often in feeding mode and a well-presented offering put in front of them can yield good results.

So, we can fish the structure or grounds but shouldn’t neglect prospecting along their travel route as well.

However, outgoing tides can funnel food through gaps in reefs, across weed beds, and into channels where some species congregate to take advantage of this.

By thinking about and asking ourselves how fish feed regarding tides and current

direction, we can definitely present a bait or lure in the best manner possible.

If fish are sitting in one spot waiting for the current to bring food to them, they’ll be facing into the current, so drifting a bait to them as naturally as possible is a much better presentation than anchoring our bait too far away with a sinker, or behind them.

“Why are they there, or not there?”, is often a great way to kickstart the right thought process.

The sea mullet is the most important species for commercial fisheries in Moreton Bay. It was the most important species for Indigenous people prior to European arrival and remains culturally important.

The sea mullet occurs in all the world’s major oceans and is important for fisheries throughout most of its range.

Sea mullet are one of several species of mullet found locally.

On the Australian east coast, sea mullet migrate from estuaries and inshore areas during late autumn and early winter for spawning. This is the time of the year you will see large shoals of sea mullet. Often the shoals congregate at the mouth of estuaries, with the migration out of the estuary and on to beaches triggered by strong offshore winds. Reducing day-length during autumn may also be an important cue for fish to roe up and get ready for migration and spawning. Around the Redcliffe peninsula, the shoals of fish generally leave the Pine River and Hays Inlet and move north along Redcliffe beaches.

Results from tagging suggest that while sea mullet can undertake large movements (more than 300km), the majority of fish recaptured were in the locality (eg. the same river or embayment) where they were tagged and released. While earlier work suggested that sea mullet on the east coast were a single stock, new molecular techniques have raised the possibility of regional scale population differentiation. It is not the case that large numbers of fish move from waters south of Moreton Bay to a location such as Redcliffe.

The age at first spawning for sea mullet is three years and 50 per cent of male sea mullet mature at about 27cm fork length. The minimum legal size of sea mullet is 30cm total length. You cannot keep sea mullet below this size, even for bait. If you are keeping small mullet for bait you need to make sure that they are flat tail or

Sea mullet larvae hatch at sea and use tidal currents to enter estuaries approximately one month after hatching. The majority of juvenile mullet will then remain within one river system until maturity. Sea mullet can occur in freshwater.

In the absence of instream barriers, such as dams or weirs, sea mullet will move upstream into brackish or freshwater habitats for feeding.

Early juvenile mullet feed on plankton and very small animals that live in the seabed. Larger juvenile and adult sea mullet principally feed on algae and detritus (and associated bacteria and protozoa) that is either sucked up from the surface layer of the mud or grazed from rocks or seagrass blades. They also typically ingest sand and mud while feeding. This sand and mud is thought to be used in the thick muscled gizzard (the anterior portion of the stomach of the fish to grind the ingested food particles.

The gizzard is the “onion” in mullet gut which is used by recreational fishers to principally target yellowfin bream.

Many an observer has seen a mullet jump lazily out of the water with nothing apparently chasing them. Why do they do it?

There is circumstantial evidence they use part of their pharynx for aerial respiration, the air obtained by jumping or rolling at the surface. This may help them feed in estuarine mud where oxygen content is very low.

Although often maligned as a table fish, sea mullet this time of the year are extremely tasty and nutritious. Smoked mullet is a delicacy. Sea mullet are very high in “good oils” and the oil content is high this time of the year during their spawning period.

Sunshine and Double Rainbows The other day I was driving to work and the most beautiful thing happened.

It had rained just a little earlier and the sun was out and shining brightly. Off in the distance was a super bright double rainbow. Now at the best of times just a normal rainbow is fabulous to see, but a super bright, double rainbow, well that doesn’t happen very often and conditions have to be just perfect. I thought, “man, I’ve got to grab a photo of that”.

Anyway, you are probably thinking, what on earth is Stephan on? Isn’t this little skit supposed to be about his adventures in real estate? Well stick with me here.

Remember how I said conditions were perfect? Well at the moment the situation is fairly similar if you have a property that you’d like to sell.

Conditions are just about perfect. We really are in double-rainbow territory.

What happened next? The road forced me to turn a corner. I travelled for a few minutes in a different direction. When I looked back the double rainbow had disappeared and even the main rainbow was fading. I’d missed my chance. The perfect conditions to take the picture had passed. BIG crowds are expected at Moreton Daily Stadium when the Dolphins take on PNG Hunters on May 29 in what coach Adam Mogg says will be a physical game of footy.

It will come after a week off for the Intrust Super Cup side and on the back of two hard-fought wins.

The team won 14-12 on May 16 against the Brisbane Tigers, and 26-24 against the Townsville Blackhawks on May 9.

Mogg said the weekend’s win against the Tigers was a ‘real show of character’ and he was proud of the way the team dug deep for each other.

The Dolphins’ will play PNG Hunters at Moreton Daily Stadium on May 29 from 6pm.

Zonta President Marie Stewart said it showed supporters the club had no tolerance for coercive control or gender-based violence and abuse.

Zonta members will form a guard of honour for the players running on to the field.

Orange is the colour used to represent domestic violence, so Zonta members will wear orange shirts and the players will wear orange socks.

There will also be a raffle to raise money for DV programs, supported by Zonta Redcliffe.

“This match day has been very successful for the last six years and Zonta Redcliffe are hoping to expand this next year in May for all local winter football codes or sports, such as Australian Rules, Rugby Union, Field Hockey and would appreciate these clubs showing an interest to be involved as well,” Ms Stewart said.

ANOTHER two-point thriller! We managed to secure another close win on the weekend against the Tigers moving us into seventh (tie fourth) on the ladder.

I thought we took a step forward as a team, the previous week against Townsville, and we had a big focus on improving that performance. New Zealand Warriors’ halfback Sean O’Sullivan has made a real difference to our attack.

With the new rule coming in, we knew we were bound to get someone sent to the sin bin and sure enough it happened.

We were down to 12 men for 10 minutes defending our line. Not only did we hold them out, but we managed to score a try, going into half-time 8-6 down. We were first to score in the second half and also slotted a twopoint penalty conversion taking it to 14-8.

The Tigers never gave up and scored a try with seven minutes to go, but missed the kick taking it to 14-12. A real feature of our team has been the ability to keep turning up for each other and that certainly happened last weekend. We have notable players returning in the coming weeks including Jayden Nikorima, Trai Fuller, and Nathan Watts.

We’ll be ready to go at home against PNG. There is always a strong contingent of PNG fans, so I’m calling on all Dolphins fans to support us.

Dean makes grade at Queensland Cup STORY NICK CROCKFORD ROTHWELL student Dean Linsdell took one of the top awards at the 2021 Queensland Junior Cup at Caboolture Bowl.

The 11-year-old who goes to Mueller College won the graded division at the nationally-ranked tenpin bowling tournament earlier this month.

Dean, from Morayfield, beat Ballina bowler Sam Coombs 459-436 in the Re-

stricted Final to land his first win, according to father Charlie.

“As this was his first win he was not sure exactly what to feel,” said Charlie, “but once he realised he had won, the excitement came and he was over the moon.

“It was great to see all that effort and training he does with (coach) Don Lindsay has paid off.

“For someone who is 11, to hold his nerve is a massive credit to him and his

preparation.”

Katelin Melton, who is also based at Caboolture Bowl, won the BDP Rising Star Award, finishing fifth in the Open Division.

The 14 year old was close to beating defending champion Jess Canfield in the quarter-finals.

Her parents Alicia and Shayne said Katelin was “really shocked to be given this award”.

Tri-ing to find a home STORY NICK CROCKFORD

REDCLIFFE Triathlon Club (RTC) has two big reasons to celebrate – it had four category winners at the recent Moreton Bay Triathlon and the club is getting closer to its first home in 30 years.

In the past, bases at Margate, North Lakes and the new university site at Petrie have been suggested.

John Oxley Reserve in Murrumba Downs is still a possibility, though not for several years. A temporary home at Lawnton Aquatic Centre is now more likely.

“We have put in a submission to council to use that (Lawnton) until we could go to John Oxley,” said RTC President Nev Sprott.

“All we want is a threebay shed to keep our trailers and equipment and an area to meet. We can build a shed, we just need land.”

If successful, it would another landmark for the club which has its roots on the peninsula, but members across the region.

Some have competed at world tri and aquathon titles, Australian championships and the Ironman (3.9km swim, 180.3km ride, 42.2km run).

Leanda Robbins, Sophie Burger, Matthew Moate and Karen Reardon all won sections, ranging from 14-15 to 60-64 years at the Moreton Bay Triathlon.

However, that age range is not unusual RTC which has one member compet-

ing in her 80s. Another in his 70s has done 25 Noosa Triathlons and 60 Bribies.

Those members and many more will be at the RTC’s 30th anniversary dinner at Suttons Beach Pavilion on June 12 when more than 100 are expected.

Tigers take on Bombers – and snake THE Redcliffe Tigers AFL Club’s senior women’s team got more than they bargained for in their Round 3 match against Alexandra Hills.

Coach Dylan Barker said play had to be stopped when a snake glided past players on the Alexandra Hills team bench and onto the field.

“All of a sudden the opposition girls on their bench started screaming and the snake slithered past them onto the field,” Barker said.

“I ran down from the coaches’ box to keep an eye on it.

“We were looking for things to pick it up.”

Quick-thinking members from the Alex Hills Bombers produced a ball bag.

“We put the bag in front of the snake and it took shelter inside and we managed to pick it up and get rid of it.”

Barker’s no stranger to reptiles, having kept pet snakes and handled pythons, but said he was a little alarmed when he realised they were dealing with a one-metre Eastern Brown Snake.

Eastern Browns, together with other brown snakes, account for more deaths in Australia each year than any other group of snakes.

Their venom is the second-most toxic of land snakes in the world.

“When I saw it was a brown I decided to play it safe – when it comes to those ones you stay clear,” he said.

Open gold rush for PK’s team PK Taekwondo struck a rich vein of gold at the Gold Coast Open this month.

The North Lakes club, which has been open less than three years, won 10 gold medals as well as five silver and two bronze.

It was a handsome haul for the club members who have been training hard at PK Taekwondo’s base on Flinders Parade.

STORY NICK CROCKFORD FORMER Australian amateur heavyweight champion Mal Challinor admits there was a “tear in his eye” when Savannah Calledge first walked into Redcliffe City Boxing Club gym.

Savannah, 11, is the great granddaughter of the club’s legendary trainer Barry Parnell, who trained 72 state champions, 29 Australian champions (including Challinor) and five Oceania champions.

“When she first came in I nearly cried,” said Challinor, the Australian amateur heavyweight title holder from 1973-75 and 1977-78, “it was great.”

The legacy of Barry Parnell, who died in 2008, is everywhere, from pictures and gym rules to the basics of boxing and the motto on

vests: “Modest in victory, courage in defeat”.

Now his great granddaughter is trying boxing.

It was another landmark for the growing club which, under Challinor, Allan ‘Bunger’ Johnson and Mark Dixon is thriving in a white steel shed on Old Bay Rd, by Burpengary Tavern.

Josh McCullough, 15, last month became the club’s first state amateur champion, under its affiliation to Boxing Queensland, when he won the featherweight novice title at 57kgs.

“He will go a long way,” said Challinor, “this bloke will win a national amateur title some time. He wants to turn pro, that’s his goal.

teaching and won our first state title. Barry had 72!

“We’ll take anyone at the gym. We’ll show anyone how to hold their hands up.

“Our biggest thing is footwork and hands. Hands aren’t down here they are up here. That’s the big message coming from Barry back to these boys.

“Here, each person that comes in, shakes your hand, that shows respect.

Then, what we teach, you don’t take outside. That’s the way I was taught. I’ll tell ‘em straight, don’t ever go looking for it or you’ll have me to deal with.”

Working with Challinor is former bantamweight boxer Alan “Bunger” Johnson, Parnell’s first state champion at Townsville and kickboxer-turned-boxing trainer Mark Dixon.

“Bunger does the pads,

Mark holds the pads,” said Challinor, “Mark’s taking over down the track. I’m 68, Bunger’s in his 60s.

“Mark was a kick boxer.

To come back to boxing is a totally different concept, but he’s picked it up 110 per cent and he’s good with it.

“There’s a lot of pressure taking this on. You have to get boys to a certain position but I love it, it’s putting a bit back (into the sport).”

Challinor, Johnson and Dixon – with more than 100 years’ boxing experience between them - volunteer three nights a week at the Redcliffe City Boxing Club.

NORTH Lakes racer Ryan Suhle leads the Porsche Michelin Sprint Challenge Australia after two rounds of the six-meeting season.

Suhle, 18, finished second-second-first in three races at Sydney Motorsport Park earlier this month.

The Challenge is developing into a battle between the local driver and Christian Pancione, of Victoria, who was first-first-second.

Suhle leads overall with 284 points from Pancione on 258 with r o u n d three at Morgan Park, Warwick on Ryan Suhle June 25-27.

“One thing we were looking for this season is consistency, so I was happy with those results,” said Suhle, “that’s what you need to win championships.

“It wasn’t perfect. We need to work on getting off the line. Christian pipped me there but I managed to pass him in the final race.”

Shule overtook Pancione with four laps left in the 10lap third race to finish less than half a second ahead in 17 minutes 12.5276 seconds.

Stunning start in Ultraman CHEYNE Murphy, from Redcliffe Triathlon Club, had a stunning debut in one of Australia’s toughest races.

The 42-year-old was runner-up in the Ultraman Australia – a three-day 515km endurance test over a 10km swim, 421.1km bike ride and 84.3km run.

Murphy crossed the line on Noosa Beach in 23 hours 7 minutes 33 seconds for second place overall.

“The last 5kms was awesome,” he said, “once I’d got over that last hill I knew it was just back to Noosa.

Nothing mattered. Even the soft sad at the finish.”

Superb final finish lands state title NORTH Lakes Oztag is now home to the Queensland Under 16-17 Boys’ champions.

The teenage squad, at Woodside Community Centre, was undefeated en route to the state title at the Sunshine Coast Stadium last month.

North Lakes trailed Miami 4-1 at half-time in the grand final, but rallied to

win 6-5. Ryan Harper was also named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the Tournament.

North Lakes’ Under 1011 Boys’ and Girls’ teams made the quarter-finals as did the Under 16-17 Girls, before bowing out.

The Under 12-13 Boys and Under 14-15 Boys and Girls just missed the finals finishing fifth in their pools.

Many of the Under 1213 Girls were in their first State Cup competition, enjoying the experience and several wins.

Four North Lakes Oztag referees also attended their first Junior State Cup. “Thank you to all our coaches for your time and effort not only over the weekend, but all the weekend prep leading into the

tournament,” said North Lakes centre manager Bek Robertson.

The North Lakes centre has 41 players in teams and development squads for the Qld Oztag Super Series in December at Kawana.

Half the planned 132 pro-am entries will be professionals, said Adnams with positions on the Australian PGA’s Order of Merit deciding who is accepted.

“It’s exciting,” said Adnams, “we’re going to get the best-of-the-best wanting to play because it is a great prize pool.”

Redcliffe Golf Operations Manager Hannah Mason said organising a pro-am was a “massive effort”. “You have to create the event, draw players and sponsors and members giving up their course for a couple of days,” she said.

Adnams said the event was “blessed” with the level of support it was receiving.

“We thought this year let’s try to go one better than 2019 and get $40,000-$50,000,” he said.

“Hutchinson Builders has generously come on board as naming rights sponsor for the 2021 Redcliffe Pro-Am. That was a huge start for us.

“A couple of partnering sponsors from 2019 doubled their commitment, there are other sponsors as well and we have a $60,000 pro-am.”

The Hutchinson Builders Redcliffe Pro-Am will be stroke play. Then the top eight pros go into a four-hole match play shootout for $5000 winner-takes-all.

The remaining professionals will have a nearest-the-pin shootout on the 18th hole for $1000.

REDCLIFFE will host one of the biggest pro-am golf tournaments in Australia this year.

The Hutchinson Builders Redcliffe Pro-Am on July 15-16 will have a huge $60,000 prize purse attracting many of the best professional players in the country.

Sponsors and invited members of Redcliffe Golf Club will play with the pros, entry will be free for spectators and a host of additional attractions will set up over the two days.

“This will put our course on the map,” said Redcliffe’s Director of Golf Chris Adnams, “and will take us Australia wide. People will stand up and take notice.

BRYCE Harrison, from PCYC Redcliffe, won two medals for Queensland in the Australian Gymnastics Championships on the Gold Coast at the weekend.

The 15-year-old took the Junior Under 17 Trampoline gold and Junior Under 17 Double Mini bronze at the national titles held in Carrara.

His Redcliffe club colleague Beau Edwards, 10, also made the top of the medal podium after winning the National Level 5 Double Mini competition.

Harrison Lee, 16, collected a bronze medal in the Junior Under 22 Trampoline.

Six trampolinists and one tumbler from Redcliffe were in the Queensland team at the national titles.

Gymnastics Co-ordinator Lyn Gilroy was in the coaching team.
