Bargain shoppers flock to op shop STORY NICK CROCKFORD RESIDENTS in this region love op shops, but no-one expected the staggering response to Mango Hill’s new YMCA Op Shop.

It opened on August 29 and within two weeks had to extend its hours and days.

“It is all because of the wonderful response from the community,” store supervisor Sharon Hazel said.

“It has surpassed our expectations. We started Mon-

day to Saturday, 9am-4pm and thought we’d see how we go … maybe expand the hours and days in four-tosix months.”

By September 13, the weekday opening times had been extended to 5pm and Sunday trading started – immediately becoming the shop’s busiest day.

The YMCA Op Shop at Mango Hill accepts all donations, except large furniture, dropped off during opening hours - one lady

walked in with 30 bags - or at the rear of the shop.

Ms Hazel is supported by 20 volunteers who give anything from three hours to three days each week – and students studying retail in the YMCA Vocational School above the shop.

“The volunteers are amazing,” she said, “they are from all walks of life and everyone has a go at everything in the store.”

Mango Hill is the second YMCA Brisbane Op Shop,

the other is at Mt Gravatt.

Funds from both support the YMCA’s Schools Breakfast Program, providing 70,000 free meals each month for students in more than 110 schools. Having a healthy start improves behaviour, engagement and academic performance.

STORY KYLIE KNIGHT STAGE three of Dolphin Stadium is open and the club has launched a $100 million bid to be the next NRL team - now they are calling on the community to help to make it happen.

The Dolphins made a bold play for an NRL licence last week, when they officially opened the newly-completed stadium and laid bare a compelling case for inclusion in the national competition.

For the first time, the club detailed their strong financial position and asset base, ideal geographic location and proximity to Brisbane, and reminded the league of their history as a nursery for some of the game’s greatest players.

It follows the arrival of former Brisbane Broncos chief commercial officer Terry Reader, who started working with the club in August and will drive the bid.

Mr Reader said he had been working with the Dolphins on a roadmap to give them the greatest chance of success.

He clearly believes theirs is the bid to beat, having being sounded out by another bid

but chosing to work on the Dolphins bid, which he said was the best option for the NRL. “The Dolphins don’t muck around. They know what they want to do. You only have to look at their history and what they’ve built,” Mr Reader said.

“The Dolphins goal has always been to play rugby league at the highest level of the competition. The club’s operation and investment in the community and facilities has been to be in a position to do just that.”

In his view, it has already done the hard yards by building the infrastructure, securing diversified revenue streams and running a successful football club.

“Everything is already there that’s needed to run a NRL team. It’s a better set-up when compared to most other NRL clubs,” he said. “Brisbane is the biggest marketplace outside of Sydney, but there’s only one team in Brisbane but there’s nine in Sydney.”

Mr Reader said the NRL had no formal bid process, but he believed it would ramp up after this year’s COVID-19-interupted season was over.

Until last week’s stadium opening, most people did not know exactly what the club had to offer.

He said they had a turnover of more than $30 million, $100 million in assets and leased office space, and the stadium was just 25 minutes from Brisbane Airport.

Mr Reader said it would be a Brisbane NRL bid – not a Redcliffe bid – appealing to rugby league fans from greater Brisbane, Moreton Bay and to the Sunshine Coast and beyond.

Now, that the club has made it known what it has and the strength of its bid, Mr Reader and the board will activate an action plan to garner support and build the Dolphins NRL bid brand. Key to that is a new website, and Facebook, Instagram and Twitter accounts they hope the community will use to show the NRL they want a team here.

“We want them to show their red and white and push the case for the region to get the next Brisbane team,” Mr Reader said.

This is vital in a digital age, when the NRL is looking at the level of support online.

Redcliffe will be removed

from the name, so it is more inclusive and representative of the fan base.

The club will seek feedback from about what name should fall in front of the word Dolphins – River City, South Queensland, Moreton Bay or something else.

“We want the public to help us come up with a name so they can feel an extra connection and have a real ownership of the team,” Mr Reader said.

The Redcliffe Dolphins would be the main feeder team, but the club would also look to form affiliate relationships with two or three other Queensland Cup clubs.

While Suncorp Stadium would be the Dolphins’ home ground, some games would

be played at Dolphin Stadium and perhaps even the Sunshine Coast.

For now, Mr Reader and the board are building a commercial model detailing how the club would operate if it was granted a licence – how it would generate revenue, what its expenses would be and how many staff it would employ.

Dolphins’ chairman Bob Jones said the completion of the stadium meant the club’s bid was ‘NRL ready’.

“With this in place, the Dolphins NRL Bid now has all the ingredients to provide a strong, community-based team that would represent as a true Brisbane club in the NRL.”

Briefs Work progresses The upgrade of Deception Bay Rd between Anzac Ave And Morris Rd is still impacting all lanes, but work is expected to be completed by the end of October.

The $662.5 million upgrade will provide six lanes from the Caboolture/Bribie Island Rd interchange to Steve Irwin Way and create more than 660 jobs.

It should be finished early in 2023.

Pre-polling booths will be open from Monday, October 19 to Friday, October 30 (excluding Sunday 25 October), with extended hours.

Tributes flow for diamond Betty FOR more than 50 years, Betty Paxton devoted her life to softball and the youth of Redcliffe, and her death on Saturday has prompted tributes from community leaders and many others who knew her as ‘Bet’ or ‘Aunty Betty’.

Mrs Paxton was 90 years old and had shared her love of softball with generations of players since she first picked up a bat in 1948.

Her daughters Maree Hockings and Kaye Wrigley said their mum and late father Andy left a strong imprint on their “family way of life”.

“This is demonstrated by the closeness of the family as signified by the want of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren to get together and still enjoy Christmas celebrations in our family home of 60 years,” Mrs Hockings said.

“The family is shocked by the sudden passing of Betty and she was much loved and will be missed by many.” She is survived by her daughters, their husbands Nev and Tom, four grandchildren and their partners and six great-grandchildren.

With friend June Horne Mrs Paxton brought the

sport to Redcliffe, starting at Redcliffe PCYC in 1966 with three teams that travelled to Downey Park in Brisbane every week.

Mrs Paxton held a long list of positions with the Brisbane Softball Association, Redcliffe and Districts Softball Association, and Redcliffe PCYC during the past 57 years.

Her legend will live on Her contribution to the sport and the youth of Redcliffe was recognised in 2000, when she received a Medal (OAM) in the General Division of the Order of Australia. In the same year, the council named the softball grounds The Betty Paxton Field.

In November, she was still coaching tee-ball, PCYC C grade and Bets Vets – the over 45s masters team.

Mrs Paxton formed the team in 1991 and they competed at Masters Games events including the World, Asia Pacific (Pan Pacs), Australian and Queensland competitions. It all started when her friend convinced her to join the Red Devils

team as an 18-year-old.

That move put her on a path that would see her devote countless hours to coaching, administration, fundraising and have a hand in the development of players who would go on to represent their state and country. And none of it would have been possible without the support of her late husband Andy.

While Mrs Paxton was well-known for her service to softball, many remembered the couple from their time as the owners of Bay Boats and the 19 years they ran the kiosk at Scarborough.

Redcliffe PCYC Softball President David McDonald said she was the heart, soul and backbone of the Redcliffe PCYC and Redcliffe Softball.

“Known to many as Aunty Betty, she has touched many lives over the years.

Betty has coached and been a part of this club for so long she has been a part of three generations of some people’s families. We mourn her but she will be forever intertwined in the fabric of our softball community,” he said.

Mayor Peter Flannery said: “Betty is a legend in

every sense of the word, as pioneering sports woman, as a community champion, as an inspiration to young girls. The Moreton Bay Region is richer for the fact that Betty Paxton OAM decided to call this place home, vale.”

Former councillor James Houghton said Mrs Paxton was an icon and he felt lucky to have known her for about 50 years.

Former Redcliffe PCYC Chairman Noel Powell said she was the longest-serving volunteer at any PCYC in Queensland.

Redcliffe Leagues Softball Association President Carrie Te Wani said: “Betty was an amazing woman and without her softball at Redcliffe would not have existed. I know she loved the place dearly and in turn she was loved by all.”

Never too old for Jetty2Jetty STORY JODIE POWELL JAMES Wyndham is proof you are never too old to follow your dreams.

Mr Wyndham has signed up for this year’s Jetty 2 Jetty half-marathon, and is the oldest male competitor in the category, at 79 years young.

He took part last year, and said he thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Mr Wyndham said he took up running three or four years ago because he had always liked to walk.

“I was on a beef cattle property at Tenterfield and we didn’t have dogs or horses, so we used to do everything on foot,” Mr Wyndham said.

“We had the animals trained to come out to get their hay and molasses. We just had to press the horn and they would come.

“But we would have a few animals that were a bit temperamental and would lead the others astray and I would have to chase them on foot.

“I’m retired now, but I still like my walking.”

Mr Wyndham said he walked 8km twice a week, but would ramp up his routine ahead of Jetty 2 Jetty on October 4.

“I am trying to get my times down so I don’t get disqualified,” he said.

As for his pre-race plans on the big day?

“I’ll have cup of tea and make sure I go to the loo.

Then I’ll be right.”

Registrations for this year’s Jetty 2 Jetty are still being accepted online at j2j. com.au, but the half-marathon is almost booked out.

The event has a COVIDSafe plan approved by Queensland Health and participants will compete in waves to reduce the number of people running at any one time.

Social distancing will be mandatory in the race precinct, and ‘field of play’ conditions will apply on the course.

Real estate market bounces back LOW interest rates, solid supplies and strong demand have combined to create a buoyant real estate market across this part of the region, according to local agents.

Ray White Woody Point director Damien Misso said while the early part of the year was slower, the market bounced back after Easter. “From March until Easter it was like somebody pressed pause, but since then it’s been really strong,” Mr Misso said.

“One thing the (COVID-19) pandemic has done is make people focus on shelter, and that’s why we’re seeing such strong activity.”

Century 21 Scarborough principal Maddie Dolan said the market was particularly robust.

“We’re seeing four to five offers to purchase on properties, which we haven’t seen for a while,” she said.

“It’s really exciting times on the peninsula.”

Ray White North Lakes principal Darren Suhle said properties in North Lakes and Mango Hill were selling fast, with interest rates at an all-time low.

“The rental market is a bit thin with stock and people are thinking it’s a bit hard to rent, so they’re buying instead,” Mr Suhle said.

“The majority (of buyers)

Finding a way to honour officers

STORY NICK CROCKFORD RESIDENTS and community groups were still part of Police Remembrance Day in the North Lakes area – thanks to Father Dan Berris.

Fr Dan, a minister at The Lakes Anglican Church in

Mango Hill and a volunteer police chaplain, came up with a virtual solution to COVID-19 restrictions.

No public services were held on the day, September 29, but Fr Dan took recorded messages of thanks and support to show officers.

The idea was sparked

during a conversation Fr Dan had with the previous Mango Hill North Lakes Police Station Officer-in-Charge Senior Sergeant Shane Hancock.

“One of the things which is very important is giving thanks for police officers who lost their lives and

those serving our community now,” Fr Dan said.

“I’d gathered videos for months (during lockdown) for church services, we thought why not do it in a similar way for the police?

It is something I can then take into the station.”

sociation recorded a short, rousing message at the end of its September monthly meeting.

Students at Mango Hill State School also recorded a message and sent it to Fr Dan, who planned to take more than half a dozen messages to the station.

“The coronavirus pandemic has been hard on everyone but this pandemic hasn’t peaked yet, so it’s absolutely essential that we all stay in this together,” Mayor Flannery said.

“We’re also not charging any interest on overdue rates right now and we’ve given a $200 rates rebate to every homeowner on JobSeeker to help them through these tough times.”

As well as offering rates relief, Mayor Flannery said Council had rolled out $33 million in stimulus initiatives

to support the local economy.

“That’s included a 480 percent increase in the amount of grants we’ve given to community clubs and sporting organisations to help them maintain their infrastructure and cope through the loss of revenues during forced venue closures.”

As well, $23 million in capital works had been fast-tracked, $26 million in road resurfacing brought forward and $4 million in maintenance work made available via tender for lo-

cal contractors, he said.

Pensioners would benefit too, Mayor Flannery said, with 8800 part-pensioners receiving $100 in rates remission and almost 17,000 people on a full pension receiving $250 off their annual rates bill.

“We’re building our way back to economic success with a $220 million capital works program in this year’s Budget,” he said.

“Spending is up on last year and estimated to support 3000 jobs, on top of the 100 roles we’re currently

in the process of hiring here at council to directly employ more locals and provide you with a better standard of service.”

Mayor Flannery said people experiencing financial difficulties could apply for a rates payment plan, which would be considered by Council CEO Greg Chemello, with a prompt turnaround.

RATEPAYERS across the Moreton Bay Region will benefit from the extension of Council’s COVID-19 rates relief program until March next year.

The council voted unanimously to extend the program by a further six months.

Under the scheme, residents and businesses can apply for an interest-free repayment plan.

Mayor Peter Flannery said the program was to have ended on September 30.

Redcliffe pool opening delayed REDCLIFFE Memorial Pool will remain closed until January after the need for more extensive work delayed the project.

Three pools at the complex closed earlier in the year as a result of the COVI-19 pandemic and remained closed after Moreton Bay Regional Council approved spending more than $239,000 in June for concrete joint and tile maintenance.

But when the pools were drained, workers discovered concrete in the pool shells was so wet the concrete joints would need to be more heavily fortified and tiling completely replaced.

“Those tiles would likely fall off during the process of reapplying grout and so now it would be prudent to alter the scope of works under the contract to include a complete tile replacement within the pool shells,” an officers’ report said. “At the same time, it would also be prudent to amend the scope of works to include a more comprehensive concrete joint renewal to better prevent water saturating the concrete shells in the future.”

Moreton Bay Region Mayor Peter Flannery said, given the pool was almost 50 years old, it was not surprising it was “showing its age in places”. The additional work was expected to cost almost $330,000.

MOTORISTS are still falling victim to car theft – but Moreton District Crime Prevention Co-ordinator Senior Constable Jo Arthur said people could take simple steps to prevent it.

Voting opens on October 2 and will close on October 11. Winners will be announced on October 16.

Last year, more than 50 cafes, restaurants and bars rallied locals to get behind their campaign to claim top prize

Almost 10,000 votes poured in from locals and these were used to determine the winners.

“We’re thrilled to bring back The Forkies in 2020 and hope to turn a few frowns upside down, despite the tough year that many of our local busi-

nesses have experienced,” Mr Newcombe said.

“The Forkies is a great way to give our local businesses an excuse to brag about themselves and rally the support of the public. It’s a bit of fun and a great reminder for locals to buy, shop and support our local businesses.

Moreton Bay Region Mayor Peter Flannery said the region’s food scene had come of age.

and in March he plans to ride 120km from Noosa to Woody Point to raise awareness of the condition, and money to secure his future.

PMD is a condition that affects the central nervous system and is associated with abnormalities of the white matter of the brain and spinal cord. Mr McDowall said he was one of only a handful of people to live as long as he has.

He is also legally blind, has cerebral palsy, spina

bifida, attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD).

Despite these significant health challenges, Mr McDowall’s outlook on life remains positive. Walking is becoming increasingly difficult, so Mr McDowall is making the best of what he has, buoyed by a dedicated support crew which includes father Gavin and his partner Robin, sister Danielle, carer Matt Bell and

Holistic Horizons founder Drew Cason.

Mr Cason said Mr McDowell was his first client and the reason he started the Margate-based service, that offers support to people with disabilities.

Nathan is in serious training, clocking up 40 training rides already, hitting the gym and working on physiotherapy and brain training exercises.

The first leg of Nathan’s Big Ride is likely to be from

Noosa to Caloundra on a cycle pathway and then Narangba to Woody Point.

He’s hoping the community gets behind him, donating water, food and other supplies for the trip, as well as prizes that can be raffled to raise money.

Powering towards new comp STORY NICK CROCKFORD PENINSULA Power is one of 30 football clubs across Australia to formally sign-up for a new national second division.

As members of the Championship Partner Group, Power are supporting - and financially contributing towards - the creation of a new second-tier competition.

It would sit between the

A-League and NPL state competition. Power are currently third in the top tier in Queensland, the NPL Qld. If the Association of Australian Football Clubs (AAFC) plans come to fruition, Power could be part of the new league when it launches in 2022 or 2023.

AAFC has spent three years working on the proposal but, the Championship Partner Group is the

first written agreement signed by clubs looking to be part of the new competition.

“Peninsula Power has been on board with this since the start,” club president Craig Feuerriegel said. “Our mantra is always to strive to go forward.

“We believe we can represent our community and the area at the highest level, as we showed by going into the NPL. This would

be an opportunity to grow to the next level.”

Feuerriegel said the club’s foundations within the community would remain the same and infrastructure was already in a position to step up to a national second division.

“We feel we’re well placed, we have very good support from sponsors and the community,” he said.

“We are a diverse club and

would look to expand further into the community.”

Four other clubs from Queensland have also signed-up: NPL sides Gold Coast United and Olympic, plus FQPL teams Western Pride and Wynnum Wolves.

AAFC Chairman Nick Galatas said: “We’ve been encouraged by the support for a championship within the football community – support that has continued

to grow.

“The championship is about creating stronger clubs and expanding the football footprint throughout the country to the benefit of our sport.”

Championship Partner Group clubs will now work to finalise a detailed design report for FFA Board approval. Promotion and relegation from the second tier will be a key factor.

Halliday in rare achievement STORY NICK CROCKFORD DAVID Halliday has joined a unique group of three at Redcliffe Leagues Hockey Club.

On September 12 he became only the third Redcliffe player to make 350 Brisbane Division 1 appearances when he lined up against Commercial.

The members of this remarkable club are Kent Harle, who played a total of 383 games and Jordan Harle who made 356 appearances. Halliday’s tally now stands at 352.

It’s a staggering achievement. Halliday, who is now 38, started in Redcliffe’s juniors at the age of five and made his first-grade debut at 15 in 1998. He plays mainly as a striker.

“Not too many people have reached 350 games and to have three in one club is quite an achievement,” Redcliffe Leagues Senior Men’s Chairman Damien Budd said.

“You have to have played virtually every game year after year to achieve that.

I know he’s proud to be a one-club man.

“David loves the game and is a fierce competitor. He gives everything

In 2003, Redcliffe won the Brisbane Division 1 and Halliday scored the winning goal in the Grand Final victory over Easts. It remains a career highlight along with winning junior premierships and the Division Two “three-peat”

“I think it’s a passion for the sport and the special club which keeps me going,” Halliday said. “Everyone put in and helps out, doing what ever needs to be

done. I think one of the best things about the club is the way everyone supports the juniors. I coached juniors for seven or eight years and now I’m playing with some of those boys.

“There are a few niggling injuries and I am the oldest member of the team, but I’ll continue as long as my body lets me. I’ve played every position but in goal this season.”

THE Man Walk Redcliffe started last year with just three people. Today the support group has more than 100 members and is still growing.

A similar group has now opened in Caboolture. Both are free for any man to join and The Man Walk Redcliffe has already reached a milestone – its 50th walk.

With members aged between 26 and 78, the men walk from Redcliffe Jetty, south to Scotts Point or north to Queens Beach, twice a week.

“More and more are joining us,” said Adam White, a peninsula resident and founder of The Man Walk Redcliffe.

“We stop and have a chat with people along the way and tell them what we do. If we see someone walking on their own, we invite him to join us.

“It’s a support group with a social aspect. There’s no agenda, no-one is questioned. We don’t try to break the land speed record, it’s just a steady pace.

“I started when I was at rock bottom, an all-time low.

WORK will start within weeks on a $163.3 million upgrade of the Deception Bay Road/Bruce Highway overpass.

Transport and Main Roads (TMR) said the contract, funded 80:20 by the federal and state governments, had gone to BMD Constructions and was expected to be finished in early 2023.

Federal Member for Petrie Luke Howarth said: “Anyone who knows the existing bridge, that is decades old, knows that it is in urgent need of an upgrade. I am very happy that it is now becoming a reality.”

New group searches for a home STORY JODIE POWELL A NEW group is connecting people with disabilities, their families carers and friends.

Started by Rosslyn Kennedy and a band of dedicated volunteers, the Northside Dreamers Club aims to help members share information, provide social activities, and help navigate the complexities of the National Disability Insurance Scheme.

“When my three youngest

children, Gretta, Lachlan and Phoebe, were little and I was desperate for help, my friends and I started a support group called PATCH, Peninsula Aid to Children with Handicaps,” Ms Kennedy said.

“We founded a theatre group, swimming club, lobbied for physiotherapy, speech therapy and occupational therapy in the area and also worked to get Special Education units in some of the schools.

“The most important thing our group did was to have regular meetings with other parents to comfort and support each other and share information on services.”

PATCH fell by the wayside as volunteers returned to work when their children grew older, but Ms Kennedy said there was still a need.

“The National Disability Insurance Scheme has given us the opportunity to once again found a support and social group for people with

disabilities, their families and carers,” she said.

“Some are managing well but others are desperate for help. We especially want to reach out to parents of newly diagnosed babies with disabilities to let them know help is available.”

PAA’s plea for helpers

STORY JODIE POWELL PENINSULA Animal Aid needs more volunteers.

Volunteer co-ordinator Anne Carmichael said regulars were needed to help in the kennels and cattery and with Saturday hydrobath sessions.

With the non-for-profit charity helping hundreds of animals return to their owners or be rehomed every year, Ms Carmichael said an army of volunteers was crucial to keep things running.

“As a priority, PAA is seeking applications from

people wishing to volunteer in the kennels, cattery or hydrobath,” Ms Carmichael said.

Work for volunteers in the kennels includes cleaning up night soil with pooper scoopers, hosing and disinfecting kennels, feeding the pooches, washing their dishes, walking the dogs, playing games, training and grooming.

Those keen to work in the cattery could expect duties to include cleaning cat bed hammocks and coverings, brushing cat stands to remove debris, emptying,

cleaning and refilling toilet trays, refilling water and food, grooming long-haired cats and affectionate handling and petting of cats to accustom them to people.

Ms Carmichael said the Saturday hydrobath sessions were the shelter’s biggest fundraiser, with halfday shifts starting at 8am.

Help shape two new skateparks STORY JODIE POWEL SKATERS across the Moreton Bay Region can help design the next generation of skateparks to be built in Deception Bay and North Lakes.

Mayor Peter Flannery said it was part of Moreton Bay Regional Council’s

goal to plan today for the skateparks of tomorrow.

“Skating, scootering, BMX riding and roller blading have seen a huge surge in popularity in recent years, so much so that they’ve become a key part of Council’s future planning,” he said.

“As a father of young kids I want to know that they’ll be growing up with parks, playgrounds, and amenities that reflect modern standard - not just dated swings and slides.

“That’s why we’re inviting public feedback to guide our skatepark designs to upgrade Deception Bay and North Lakes. You can even submit drawings, sketches, and photos of what you want to see.

“Each region of Moreton Bay is unique and we want

that to be reflected in our planning, so that no two skate parks are identical and they each have their own distinct features.

The feedback Council receives, as part of this process, will help inform the concept design phase, which will then be subject to future community consultation.

Gallery opening with difference STORY KYLIE KNIGHT ART lovers have the chance to enjoy a guided tour of the new $5.5 million Redcliffe Art Gallery, when it opens its doors on October 10 and 11.

Moreton Bay Mayor Peter Flannery said it was a landmark event and a boost for the region, after the long-awaited opening was stalled by COVID-19.

“I’m so excited to say the new and improved Redcliffe Art Gallery building is ready to take its first visitors on guided tours of the facilities,” Mayor Flannery said.

“In a time of coronavirus, it will certainly be a unique experience given restricted numbers, but I believe that will allow you to appreciate the art and new building more intimately without the usual opening day crowds.

“It has been a monumental effort from Council staff and building contractors Leaf Building Group to get this project ready to go in such a difficult year, so I thank everyone for their amazing work.

“The gallery will be a new cultural destination, bringing with it a new wave of visitors to Redcliffe and

the greater Moreton Bay Region. But most of all I believe this is a timely injection of positivity for the local community, and a great place for everyone to come and be inspired.

“We were worried this remarkable local artist wouldn’t see the opening of the gallery, so he’s already been given a private tour with his family which was an incredibly emotional experience for everyone involved.”

It is hoped Mr Clark will be able to attend, at some stage, during the opening weekend.

Opening hours will be Monday to Saturday, 10am to 4pm after weekend of October 10 and 11.

‘Blending’ life, children, business STORY JODIE POWELL LYLA Tuwhangai knows better than most how tricky it can be to raise children and run a business.

The Redcliffe mother of three daughters launched a new company in April, when her youngest child was just two months old.

Ms Tuwhangai was named as a finalist in the Hair and Beauty and Product Innovation categories of the AusMumpreneur Awards, presented by The

Women’s Business School, after launching haircare range Mamaco.

Ms Tuwhangai said when it came to having a business and children, she believed in putting her children first.

“There’s no balance,” Ms Tuwhangai said.

“We can’t do it all, children outweigh all that. For me it has been about blending things.

“I work in the loungeroom with them, it’s just normal for them.”

It’s on with the show STORY KYLIE KNIGHT THE old saying, ‘the show must go on’ rings true for the 150 pupils involved in Grace Lutheran Primary School’s production of The Wizard of Oz. Originally scheduled to be staged on June 5 and 6, the show had to be postponed due to COVID-19 restrictions but director of performing arts Kyren Luostarinen was determined to bring it to the stage in some form.

“We were thinking how could we not cancel it for our kids, when so many things have been cancelled this year,” she said.

They investigated options including videoing and live streaming, but thankfully COVID-19 restrictions eased and Redcliffe Entertainment Centre was available on the dates Ms Luostarinen had in mind – October 9 and 10.

It will be a COVIDsafe performance, at 50 per cent capacity, but the children,

staff and parents are just pleased it is going ahead.

“It’s all managed to come together which is pretty awesome,” she said.

There are 150 pupils involved in the production, from all year levels, including eight dance troops, two choirs, a number of theatre/drama classes and more.

Discovering the power of giving

Governor-General David Hurley and his wife Linda applaud the students’ efforts.

THREE local schools involved in the SchoolAid network have earned accreditation for philanthropic work in their school communities and beyond.

It was an honour that caught the attention of Governor-General David Hurley and his wife Linda, who presented the awards to eight schools from

across Australia via video link in July.

The three local schools were Grace Lutheran Primary School, Southern Cross Catholic College Woody Point and Clontarf Beach State School.

Pupils from each of the primary schools have raised money and garnered support for charitable causes in their

communities.

SchoolAid is a national philanthropic network, which empowers children to change their world through commitment and action for causes they care about. Founder and CEO Sean Gordon said while pupils helped others in their communities, the work they did also improved their own mental

health and sense of worth.

During the online ceremony, Mr Hurley said the organisation operated at a ‘higher, almost spiritual level’.

“SchoolAid states, as its mission, ‘to help young people experience the power of giving’,” he said.

Design breaks new ground STORY NICK CROCKFORD THE new YMCA Vocational School at Mango Hill is different by design.

It is not on a vast greenfield site, but on the first floor of a new community centre, with shops beneath and a huge gymnastics venue being fitted out above.

Combining a school and gymnastics, in this way, has never been done before, Community Centre Manager and Gymnastics Co-ordinator Kate Martynov said.

But embedding a school in the community centre is part of a “big picture for the building”, on the highest point of Halpine Drive, Ms Martynov said.

The YMCA has already become a fast-growing hub, with office spaces, shops and about 900 expressions of interest for the public gymnastics centre, due to open this summer.

Between the two, is the YMCA Vocational School – Mango Hill Junior Campus for Years 7-9, feeding into the senior school for Years 10-12 near The Corso at North Lakes.

Its students have,

typically, struggled or dropped out of mainstream education and are in need of a more flexible approach to schooling.

Already 60 are enrolled from areas such as Bracken Ridge, Morayfield, Redcliffe, Pine Rivers, Dakabin and Ipswich. The maximum intake is 80.

“Students come to us disengaged, we want to engage them,” Drew Potts, Head of Campus at Mango Hill, said.

“I think we do a really good job of that. Some students haven’t been to school in a year, six months, for a term … they were expelled or had mental health reasons which stopped them attending.

“As a school, we aim to prepare students for the three pillars –

teamwork,” Mr Potts said.

The school teaches English, maths, science, humanities, art and social sciences, tech and design, cooking, dance therapy, music, arts and PE. A cafe program starts the day.

Ms Martynov said the school had “found its feet first” in a building, which has a new YMCA Op Shop, hair salon and The Lakes Anglican Church.

YMCA Mango Hill Gymnastics, the seventh within YMCA Brisbane’s program, will open in Term 1 2021, as well as trampolining, a foam pit, parkour and ninja rigs.

“It’s also to cater for those looking for a little less structure, a bit more fun,” Ms Martynov said.

Next in store for MerchWorx will be the launch of a YouTube channel, planned for later this month.

The channel will provide an outlet for recordings from MerchWorx gallery sessions, where several local acts each record a 2030 minute set in a venue jointly hired for the day to reduce costs.

One set will be rolled out each week on the YouTube channel before the process begins again.

Bands taking part will also get all the broadcast quality assets as part of the recordings.

It is a bold move in the middle of a pandemic, but proves the confidence he and wife Jo have in their business and the artists they support.

STORY JODIE POWELL ACCORDING to the old adage, only time can mend a broken heart. But what if you can’t wait?

That’s the question author Jacqueline Henry poses in her debut book, The Whole Heart.

For me it's about accepting grief The Whole Heart is the endearing tale of a little girl who has lost someone dear to her, and seeks help from a repair man to ‘fix’ her heart as she grieves.

That moment of bravery

unfolds into a journey exploring the nature of the human heart, and its different meanings to people riding the rollercoaster of emotions that are grief and heartbreak – and the wish to feel ‘whole’ again.

Jacqueline’s passion for creativity began early in life, as a child growing up in Scarborough.

“I always found myself drawn to Scarborough beach – when I had a school photo project, in summer with my friends, or when I just needed time to think,” she says.

“Scarborough beach and those pine trees – that’s my childhood.”

Jacqueline’s love of writing began as a pupil at the then St

Bernadette’s Primary School, and blossomed during her junior high school years at Soubirous College, and senior high school at Frawley College (all now under the banner of Southern Cross Catholic College).

Her first job was as a check-out operator at Kmart at Kippa Ring – an experience she recalls as challenging.

“It taught me I was no good at retail,” she laughs.

Instead, she followed her passion for writing, working as a journalist and in communications, all the while tinkering with her dream of becoming a published author.

Jacqueline says it was a

childhood driving game on a seemingly ordinary journey a few years ago that brought the inspiration she always knew would reveal itself.

“I was driving behind this old truck, and I was thinking, ‘I bet this is an old guy, I bet he could fix anything except a broken heart’.

“By the time I reached my destination, I had the whole concept in my head,” she says.

STORY DAN NEBE I’VE watched Blackcreek for a couple of years now and they have impressed me each and every time.

Formed back in 2018 with a vision of creating a mix of blues, funk and rock, these guys have certainly come up with the goods.

They have just released their second single titled Supersonic Girl and let me tell you, it kicks from the get-go. The song is creating waves in the industry here and abroad.

I spoke with frontman Richard Smith, pictured, about the song and the band’s plans for 2021.

“We’re just being creative in this pandemic. Our goal is to be ready for when live music comes back,” Smith said.

“The Blackcreek stage show is our priority, as we are committed to getting our sound out to the world.

Past a creative bridge to author’s future STORY JODIE POWELL THE Redcliffe Jetty forms the backdrop of many of author Trent Dalton’s fondest childhood and teenage memories.

And now, it is creating new memories for the journalist and father of two girls.

“I used to jump off the pier, I’ve kissed girls there, I’ve gotten drunk there, and now I’m taking my own kids there,” Dalton said.

Time spent on the peninsula and its surrounds played a pivotal role in shaping Dalton, and in influencing his work as a writer.

In particular, it played a key part in his debut novel, Boy Swallows Universe, and is the inspiration for parts of his new book, All Our Shimmering Skies, which was released on September 28.

“Redcliffe comes into Boy Swallows Universe – a key part of the book happens on Hornibrook Bridge, when Eli is fishing.

“It was a magical place for me as a kid. (The scene in Boy Swallows Universe) is all very real, catching fish, and the summer rain coming in.

The first part of Dalton’s life was spent in Goodna and Ipswich, before he moved to Brisbane’s northside, where the

streets of Bracken Ridge and Redcliffe became a playground for him, his brothers, and mates.

“We’d get on our BMXs every Saturday and go fishing off the bridge. Eventually we got cars and went to Suttons Beach.

“The best team my team, the Brighton Roosters, played in the ’80s were the Redcliffe Dolphins…I remember so many games spent at Dolphin Oval.”

Dalton said running on the beach as a kid, making his own fun with his mates, was a wonderful spark for the creativity that drives him.

“I love that place, so much.

“My old man had all these roguish mates he would drink with in the pubs and we’d go fishing and running on the beach while he did.

“Growing up in a place like Redcliffe fosters that creativity so much. The beach in Redcliffe.

That’s the smell of home to me.

It’s in my DNA. “It was like the Gold Coast to us. It was the place to be – it was two humps over the bridge on your BMX.”

Dalton, now living in Brisbane’s inner west, still relishes the opportunity to bring his family “over the bridge”.

“I love that place, so much. Absolutely every aspect of my life is there. My mum still lives in Redcliffe.

“There’s nothing we love more than going over there, going to Morgans (Seafood), to Yabbey Road fish shop, taking the kids through Bee Gees Way. While two boys were the centre of his first novel, Dalton said he was compelled to make two girls key characters in the second.

“My youngest daughter came home from school one day and her teacher was reading my book and talking about it. And she said to me `Dad, you wrote this book about two beautiful boys. Why don’t you write a book about two beautiful girls?’.”

He describes the central character of All our Shimmering Skies, Molly Hook, as a combination of both his daughters’ personalities, with a dollop of his own tossed in for good measure.

“Molly is one of those plucky Australian kids who’s going through hell and she begins to think she’s cursed,” Dalton said.

“Molly is just kind of me, and my girls and every Aussie kid I have interviewed.”

LAWN grubs can decimate a lawn in just a few days, as many people discovered in February when favourable weather conditions prompted a plaguelike hatching event.

Coochie HydroGreen franchise owner Ian McLeod said he hadn’t seen anything like it in 25 years.

“Last year, was a plague because we didn’t have rain from July to February. It was dry, so there were no moths, but then we got a metre of rain in February,” Mr McLeod said.

That created ideal conditions for the pupa, that had been patiently waiting in the soil below the grass, to hatch. And hatch they did.

North Lakes area manager Paul Martin said the grubs, with ‘champagne taste’ went in search of healthy lawns to devour.

“They were in swimming pools, they were everywhere. They were getting off the grass, trying to get to the next area,” Mr

Martin said.

“It was a learning curve for a lot of people, they’d go away on a Friday night come back Monday and their lawn was decimated.

So, what are the signs to look for, so your backyard does not become a lawn grub buffet?

“Your first sign is your lawn will look brown and you’ll think it’s dry. A lot of people confuse irrigation with lawn grubs. It’s a shift in the way the lawn looks,” Mr McLeod explained.

Mr McLeod said within 3-4 days, a lawn could be ‘back to bone’. “They eat the leaf, not the whole plant - they don’t attack the roots. It’s like using thinning scissors through your hair,” he said.

“It doesn’t kill it, but what happens is all the weeds come in and the lawn gets dried out and bakes the soil. Then your soil become hydrophobic. It starts to repel water like greaseproof paper.”

The best way to deal with lawn grubs is to apply preventative treatments every eight weeks.

“Treatment won’t stop them from laying the eggs, but if they hatch and hit that lawn they will die within seconds,”he said.

G’DAY folks, Spring is definitely in the air. This time of year, we see the beginning of a cross-over from the cool weather species to the warm weather species. A day out on Moreton Bay can see a real mixed bag hit the deck.

The closed season for Snapper and Pearl Perch is over and they can now be targeted. I spoke to Mick Dragt of Big Cat Charters who said: “The past few trips we have gone wide of Moreton Island and while slow, still managed good numbers of Snapper and Pearl Perch. We have managed to bag a couple of Mahi Mahi along the way. We should see Mahi Mahi turn up in good numbers very soon”.

If you’re fishing a little closer to the Bribie Passage or the Redcliffe peninsula, you shouldn’t have too much trouble finding a feed. We will see the numbers of bream remain, but the quality will begin to reduce.

Most fishos know that the end of winter the bream are in top condition and at their heaviest.

Moving away from the winter breeding season, they lose condition rapidly.

Margate Beach and Bribie Passage have fired up over the past couple of weeks, with reasonable numbers of whiting and flathead being caught. Banksia Beach, White Patch and Skirmish Point have all been producing reasonable numbers however there’s not a lot of quality at the moment.

Live yabbies and worms are the better baits, when chasing a feed of whiting.

If flathead is your flavour, then whole Pilchard or strips of mullet will increase your chances. Don’t be afraid to fish big baits as Dusky Flathead really show up this time of year, often in very good numbers.

Just remember, they have a minimum and maximum size limit in Queensland, 40cm to 75cm. When handling the larger specimens, be mindful of taking their weight evenly and not hanging them by lip grips, this will ensure a healthy release. If you prefer to target Flathead on lures, I suggest 3 or 4 inch soft plastics in the Z’man range. My go-to diving hard body is the Daiwa Double Clutch 95mm in natural colours.

REDCLIFFE is a real can of worms – and for the whiting angler this is a good thing!

There are five main species of marine worms (polychaetes) that anglers use for bait in Moreton Bay and four of them can be found at Redcliffe.

Cribb Island worms, or mud worms, are the commerciallyharvested species sold in various bait and tackle shops.

They can be dug in areas of the Peninsula such as Woody Point, in the soft mud and clay, and in parts of Deception Bay. They are commonly referred to as bloodworms but they are not the “true” bloodworm.

The true bloodworm is much softer and much harder to get, but Hays Inlet is the place to get them. To harvest them, you will generally need to be in at least knee-deep mud. You place your hands into the soft mud to at least your elbows and pull back the clods. The bloodworms tend to be in the firmer mud underneath.

Remember if you dig there, do not disturb mangroves and be aware that the no fishing zone there also includes no worm digging.

Rock worms (or ‘rockies’) are a small worm well-known to anglers at Redcliffe. They are found in coarse sand between rocks and in the clay material.

They are highly abundant, It pays to keep moving around to locate them. A word of caution, you will require a very sturdy fork to dig them. A challenge with rock worms is keeping them alive. There are a couple of methods for this. My preferred approach is to collect some coarse and relatively clean sand in a bucket from adjacent to the area. I then only place whole rock worms in the bucket. This means that care needs to be taken in extracting the relatively fragile worms from where you have found them. Then when I

DR DAZZA have finished digging, I place a further small amount of sand over the top of the worms, and then a rag well dampened in seawater. On returning home, I drain any excess saltwater from the bucket, and place the bucket in a tray of water.

The purpose of the latter is to prevent any ants finding their way into the bucket of rock worms. Rock worms can be kept alive for in excess of three days using this method, as long as they are kept cool and moist.

Wriggler worms are another Redcliffe specialty and a favourite for many anglers who fish at Bribie Island and around Comboyuro Point on Moreton Island. They are found in the coarse sand around the high tide mark. The preferred tool to dig them with is a 10-prong fork.

A pile of sand is dug and the fork shaken so that the sand falls through the prongs of the fork and the worms remain on them.

They are a highly-active worm, and rather than being threaded on the hook, are generally presented as a writhing cluster.

Keeping them alive is relatively easy and involves keep them in the sand they are found in a cool environment (e.g. a foam esky), and ensuring that ants don’t get in. They can be kept for a period of weeks, but they do tend to lose condition and can become like fine threads, which potentially reduces their effectiveness.

Shopping in the current market I went to Westfield’s at North Lakes on the weekend and it was pretty busy which is great to see. My search for a parking spot reminded me a bit of how the property market works. In short, the centre carpark was almost full and I circled for a good 5 minutes before finding a spot. Rewind 6 months ago, when the shopping centres were deathly quiet and I would not have taken that spot. Normally what happens when I encounter an empty carpark is that I drive around looking for the best spot, it goes something like this: no that one’s too close to the trolley bay, not sure I want one in the sun, that one’s too far from the entrance, I’m sure we’ve all done it. Faced with a heap of choice indecision is often the outcome.

STORY KYLIE KNIGHT CAMERON Cullen is man desperate for a game of footy, after a serious knee injury forced him to miss the whole 2019 season and he only played one game before COVID-19 blew the full-time whistle on this year’s Intrust Super Cup. And in an ominous sign for the Dolphins’ opponents in 2021 he’s in great shape, after serious training during the coronavirus shutdown including boxing.

“I’m probably the fittest I’ve been by a country mile for this pre-season,” he said.

“I’m not normally the fittest bloke getting around but once they called it off, I started boxing and I’m actually training for a fight at the Dolphins Leagues Club

on October 24. I’m having my debut amateur fight.”

The Dolphins captain and halfback has even played a little league, but had to think outside the box.

“I’ve gone back and played a couple of games in the local league for Brighton Roosters. When they made the decision to cancel Queensland Cup, I sat out for a few weeks but I just got itchy feet and just needed to play some rugby league, so I thought I’d go back down to the local competition,” Cullen said.

“It’s been fun, but I absolutely cannot wait to throw a Dolphins jersey on

Instead of feeling robbed about what might have been this season, Cullen’s philosophical and knows it’s given him plenty of confidence as the side prepares for gruelling pre-season training.

“It’s funny the difference that one games makes. To come back from a serious knee injury and get to play that game … we won and we played really well. To get that game under my belt was pretty cool, but I would have liked a couple more,” he said.

The priority now is to resign the strong squad that offered so much promise at the start of this year.

“It was probably the best group I’d been involved in.

I know we set some really good standards and the team

we’d assembled was just phenomenal,” Cullen said.

“I’m really hoping we can pick up where we left off.

Obviously with the addition of the Warriors’ boys, we’re going to put ourselves in a really strong position to try and take home the honours again.”

The club worked hard to keep the squad motivated during the COVID-19 shutdown, ramping up the work it was already doing with success coach Glenn Azar.

“He ran us through a 12week lockdown program where he was giving us a lot of stuff about growth mindset and that type of thing,” Cullen explained.

A love of the game he’s been playing since he was six years old, has not diminished but his priorities have changed after stints

at the Broncos, Cowboys, Titans and winning Intrust Super Cup premierships with the Burleigh Bears and the Dolphins.

“I want to do something special at the Dolphins and I want to play out my career here. I wouldn’t take a deal in the NRL somewhere else.

“If Dolphins do get to the NRL, and I’m playing good enough footy, it’s something I’d probably look at.

When I do retire, and I’ve got a few good years left in me yet, I’d love to coach at this club.”

In the meantime, he’s looking forward to making the newly-completed Dolphin Stadium a fortress and winning the competition in 2021.

Magnificient 7s take final honours STORY NICK CROCKFORD REDCLIFFE State High School’s Rugby League Program of Excellence continued its dominance of the Year 7 competition with victory in the Struddys Cup grand final.

The students were always in control with their hard-running forwards setting up the backs who took full advantage in a 30-10 win over Ipswich SHS. Scott Murray, Program Director at Redcliffe, said the team would be in the top competition in South East Queensland next year.

Redcliffe SHS’s Year 9s dominated the early stages of their final against Ips-

wich but could not convert it into points and trailed at half-time.

Despite a strong second-half rally, they lost a close match 18-12 but there are plenty of positives looking forward to 2021.

Completing an impressive finals series, Redcliffe’s Opens team went down 16-4 to Coombabah in the semi-finals of their competition.

Plans are now being drawn up for the 2021 season.

Digging deep to build Blues’ future A North Lakes netball dream is coming true with Moreton Bay Regional Council starting earthworks at Aurora Boulevard Park last week.

It is the beginning of construction of a carpark for North Lakes Blues Netball Club, which was formed a

decade ago. Once the carpark is complete it will pave the way for four new training courts, which will use the existing field lighting to train at night, and a new clubhouse.

“We’re excited to watch it take shape over the coming months and we’re so

thankful for both Council and Federal Government for their contributions,” North Lakes Blues’ President Samantha Malopito said. “We’ve had a great deal of support from the existing sports clubs who use the precinct, which has been pivotal to getting to

this point.”

Mayor Peter Flannery said this was just the start of the larger project.

“These initial $375,000 works will pay for an increase in off-street carparking, lighting, pedestrian footpaths and landscaping,” he said.

Chrysler hits top gear as records tumble CHRYSLER McLoughlin isn’t just breaking athletics records … he’s shattering them.

Titles and times at school, club, carnival and state events are all falling to the Redcliffe record-breaker.

The eight-year-old also submitted the fastest time

in Australia for his age in a virtual 2km with 7 minutes 10 seconds.

“Chrysler loves competing,” said his father Rory, “his older sister did Little As and he’s been watching since he was a baby.”

The latest success came in the state cross country

championships at Ipswich where Chrysler won the Under 8 1km title in 3 minutes 38 seconds, 10 seconds ahead of the runner up.

Chrysler was Age Group Champion and Champion of Champions at Scarborough State School, despite being in Year 3 and five 8

Years Boys records at the school carnival.

He raised the high jump record from 88cms to 1.02m, long jump from 2.76m to 3.07m and 800m best from 3.46 minutes to 2.47 minutes.

holds the 8 Years Boys shot put (7.01m) and 1500m (6:11.1 minutes) best times as both events were held for the first time.

“The comp started three seasons ago with two teams from Padres and one each from two other clubs,” said Kate, “we had a heap of fun and it has skyrocketed from there.

“It’s a social competition which takes the fear factor

out of it. We want to win because that’s fun, but not at all costs. It’s about enjoying playing.

“Our youngest player is 15 and we have women in their late 50s. It’s a great opportunity for mums and daughters to play together.”

Padres’ women’s teams train at Talobilla Park, Kippa-Ring on Sundays 2pm and Tuesdays 7pm.

“This is the top end of one-make Porsche racing and they travel around

with the Formula 1 World Championship, which is awesome!”

That target is two racing steps away. First to enter and win the Carrera Cup and then look to be selected

by Porsche for the Supercup Championship.

Though still a teenager, Ryan already has an impressive race record with 534 races, 239 podium finishes, 84 wins and 28 starts

from pole position.

He started at a young age.

At seven Ryan was rising up the ranks of Rookies and Junior National Light and by 13 competed in Australia’s toughest junior classes, the KF3 and Junior Max. Ryan spent 2014 with the Holden Kart Team, a junior program for Holden Racing, in 2015 moved into Formula Ford and in 2017

had a $50,000 scholarship from the CAMS for its Rising Stars program.

In 2018 Ryan switched to AGI Sport and finished runner-up in the CAMS Jayco Australian Formula 4 Championship.

Last year, he competed in the CAMS Payce Australian Formula 4 Championship and Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Championship, Ryan has his eyes on the top prize. recording wins in both.

Redcliffe PCYC is up to fourth place on the Capital League 3 ladder after beating derby rivals North Lakes 4-0 at the weekend. PCYC has drawn five and won two of its last seven games and will be looking for maximum points at Logan Village on Saturday (October 3).

Massive week for Power STORY NICK CROCKFORD PREMIERSHIP-chasing Peninsula Power are gearing up for the first of two NPL Qld blockbusters in five days at AJ Kelly Park.

The title race could not be tighter. Lions, Olympic and Power are locked together on 34 points. Only goal difference separates them at the top of the ladder.

Power, who are third, face second-placed Olympic at AJ Kelly Park on Friday (7.30pm) and on Tuesday welcome Gold Coast Knights (7.45pm), who are one place and three points behind Power in fourth.

“It’s fantastic. Beautifully set-up,” Peninsula Power President Craig Feuerriegel said.

“We always have a good game against Olympic.

“Both teams want top four and want to finish in the top two places. Whoever wins this match will get a leg up towards that.”

Power have two games in hand over leaders Lions and Olympic.

Feuerriegel says: “Yes we have and there are a couple of big games coming up which could help shape our season.

“But we believe you still have to put those runs on the board, so we concentrate on taking it just one match at a time.”

Goals from Danny Mchenery (his first of the season), Tom Strickland (seventh in 15 games), Andy Pengelly (third in five games) and Sam Roper (second in four games) gave Power a 4-1 win at Sunshine Coast on Sunday.

SIX members of Deception Bay Little Athletics have been selected for the annual New Zealand Development Tour run by Little Athletics Queensland (LAQ).

The six are Ella Booker, Amali Kinsella, Kianna MacLean, Alex White, Schyler Smulders and Chelsea Lafsky.

They are in an LAQ squad of 20 selected to cross the Tasman in January and compete in the South Island Teams event in Dunedin.

Ready to race at Bathurst STORY NICK CROCKFORD

NORTH Lakes driver Ryan Suhle will be “ready to go” to Bathurst next month – if COVID-19 regulations let him.

Ryan is in great form in his Porsche GD3 Cup Car winning the class and finishing third overall at round two of the Tin Tops series in South Australia this month.

Now the 18-year-old is hoping restrictions will ease for his team to travel to the iconic Mount Panorama circuit in Bathurst on October 18-19 for the Tin Tops round three.
