Plan for barge at Newport PAGE 1 STORY CONTINUED The new EOI process began on September 14 and was expected to run for three weeks. During the next phase, proposals and opportunities would be investigated with interested parties.

State Member for Redcliffe Yvette D’Ath said while the previous EOI process did not find a viable commercial opportunity at the original Scarborough location, there was strong interest to potentially operate it from other sites on the peninsula.

“That’s why I’ve asked the Minister and his department to expand the EOI process to see what opportunities might be available for other sites,” Ms D’Ath said.

“The boys like to collect treasure on the beach and like the sand glass – it’s like finding a coloured jewel on the sand,” she said.

So, when visits to the beach became more frequent during the COVID-19 shutdown and subsequent restrictions, the bounty of sea glass grew. And so did the plan to do something with it.

Seeing the lights for upgrade STORY NICK CROCKFORD PLANS are being drawn up to ease growing congestion and frustration around one of the busiest intersections in this region.

Motorists have reported waiting five minutes and more to get out of Cook Court – home to Bunnings and Costco, with McDonald’s and Taco Bell nearby – in North Lakes.

Delays are particularly long at weekends and may get worse, with more development planned for that area, unless a solution is found.

Moreton Bay Regional Council’s favoured option appears to be traffic lights and additional turning lanes at Cook Court - Flinders Pde. There are also plans to build a roundabout a little further west along Flinders Pde at the junction with Torres Crescent.

Councillor Jodie Shipway (Div 4) said the project was still in the planning phase and would then have to go for budget consideration.

“There may be some minor changes that need to be made, but I see the signalisation of the intersection as a huge positive,” Cr Shipway said.

“This intersection is one of the busiest in the region, especially on weekends, given this area is home to Bunnings and Costco.

“As one of the highest growth corridors, I think it’s slowly getting worse and with the inclusion of more businesses on Flinders Pde it’s only going to get busier.”

Moreton Bay Region Local Disaster Management Group Chair Mayor Peter Flannery said knowing your risk of bushfires, having a plan and being prepared were the key to staying safe.

DEMAND for veteran welfare services has spiked during the COVID-19 pandemic, so Redcliffe RSL is calling on the community to help it provide much-needed assistance.

The Sub Branch has two paid advocates, two volunteer advocates and five volunteer welfare officers, at a cost of about $300,000 per year. It receives a small amount of support from grants, but relies on income from its club.

That income was cut during the 17 weeks the club was forced to close due to the COVID-19 shutdown.

PARKING problems caused by narrow streets in new housing developments will be in the spotlight after Moreton Bay councillors voted to ask officers to investigate.

“We have seen first-hand some of the parking issues that people are experiencing, so we have passed a motion in council for the CEO to go away and investigate a change to our planning scheme,” Cr Shipway said.

The vote followed a visit to Griffin by Mayor Peter Flannery, Cr Jodie Shipway (Div 4) and Cr Denise Sims (Div 7) to inspect existing narrow streets and see the problems firsthand. They found narrow roads made it difficult for motorists to manoeuvre around parked cars and some residents were forced to park on their lawns.

“This is a family suburb and many families have more than one car, so logically you’d expect developers to lodge proposals that take this into account,” Mayor Flannery said.

Cr Sims said the problem was not unique to Griffin and extended to housing estates in Dakabin, Mango Hills and North Lakes, among others. Cr Shipway said the push for a planning scheme amendment to mandate wider roads in

WHEN Reece Crawford lines up for this year’s Jetty 2 Jetty (J2J) half marathon his athletic frame will mask a remarkable six-year journey.

Incredible start for students STORY NICK CROCKFORD MANGO Hill State Secondary College has been officially opened with praise flowing from Queensland’s Deputy Premier for its students’ “maturity and resilience”.

Foundation students first walked into the $64 million stage one buildings at the start of this year – and just eight weeks later went into COVID lockdown.

Deputy Premier Steven Miles, the State Member for Murrumba, said it was an “incredible start”, which students handled with “maturity and resilience.

We are all so proud of them”.

Foundation Principal Michael Rogers agreed: “We started the year really well. The first day was my proudest moment, seeing students arrive in their uniforms, teachers happy and smiling. Then we had to put the brakes

on everything.”

“The challenge of online learning in a new school, where teachers were constantly creating things was massive. We were writing curriculum pretty much all the time. But our teachers did a fantastic job and I think we’ve come out the other side really well.”

Mango Hill State Secondary College has 50 staff and 245 students. Stage one construction supported about 200 local jobs.

Education Minister Grace Grace said stage two was now out to tender. It will include a senior science technology engineering and mathematics centre; food and hospitality, art and design and performing arts centres and classrooms.

GRIFFIN State School, one of the fastest growing in this region, now has $19.8 million of additional classrooms in three new buildings for its students.

STORY KYLIE KNIGHT THE themes of William Golding’s 1954 novel Lord of the Flies remain as relevant today as when it was first written, according to the director of Redcliffe Musical Theatre’s latest production.

Zachary Crisan, 21, makes his directorial debut with Lord of the Flies and said his production of the play, like the novel, told a story of a fractured society through the themes of privilege, power and survival.

“These topics are inextricably linked with themes and issues

in our society today, which is why this play continuously resonates with our current global situation,” Crisan said.

Lord of the Flies tells the story of a group of British schoolboys stranded on an uninhabited island after the plane in which they were passengers was shot down over the Pacific during World War II. Bailey Parker, 17, plays Ralph, the protagonist and leading role of the show. “Ralph is very confused in where he stands with the other boys on the island due to the issue of separation of societal class among the group,” Crisan said.

“Ralph ends up being the

leader of the boys and struggles with taking up the mantle of authority. Bailey does a great job with taking the audience on this journey of Ralph’s.”

Torin Rhys, 17, takes on the role of Jack, the antagonist.

“When I first read the play, I thought Jack was just the bad guy,” Crisan said. “But towards the end of the play, you really start to see Jack’s vulnerable side and understand that he is not so bad after all.

“I truly think Torin tackles Jack’s intentions and characteristics of the play.”

“I’ve put my own, personal dark twist on the play, which I’m sure will catch the audiences’ attention once the show begins.”

The 11 cast and 14 crew members adopted the Theatre QLD COVID Safe plan, which allowed them to rehearse.

When the show opens, audience numbers will be restricted to 50 percent of preCOVID levels and entry to the theatre will be staggered. Masks are recommended and social distancing required.

Bloomin’ good tips for spring STORY KYLIE KNIGHT SPRING’S the season most green thumbs live for, when our gardens come back to life after winter.

The Plant Shack’s Peter Popenko reckons there’s plenty we can do this weekend to tidy up and help our gardens thrive.

Start with potted plants on verandas and patios, in hanging baskets and other containers that might be looking a little sad and sorry, or would benefit from having more room to grow.

Peter says now’s the perfect time to give them some TLC, some new potting mix, or in some cases a bigger pot. This is particularly important for fruit trees growing in pots.

Spring is also the time to spray roses “There’s a bit of black spot going around with the higher humidity,” Peter explains.

He suggests a rose spray such as Mancozeb to protect against black spot.

Roses, particularly mature plants, will also benefit from a feed of fertiliser.

It’s also a really important time to support the flowering varieties of annuals such as geraniums, begonias, lavenders, perennials and even bougainvillea.

Fertilisers that are high in potassium such as Flourish or citrus food will do the job.

“It can be used on a wide range of flowering shrubs. It’s about supporting these plants coming into flower after winter,” Peter says.

Spring is a good time to prune hibiscus shrubs. You should also add dolomite to geraniums and lavenders as summer approaches.

If your lawn is looking a little tired after winter, tis the season for top dressing.

“Grass, if it gets a little bit of moisture, will rebound with light top dressing. Make sure you use a sandy mixture and not something that’s soil-based, so it doesn’t choke the lawn,” Peter says.

Working out in the garden in spring is a joy – the days are longer and the summer heat hasn’t kicked in yet.

“We’re really enjoying working in the nursery at the moment, it’s really nice,” he says Finally, remove dead flowers from your plants, including natives to tidy them up and encourage more blooms in the weeks and months ahead.

G’day folks, I feel privileged to have received an opportunity to write a column for our new local paper, Dolphins News.

Welcome to spring, warming weather and warming water brings us close to a change of season. My fingers are crossed that the totally awesome fishing continues from winter into the new season.

The winter months produced some sensational fishing. The three-month Land and Bay Fishing competition started in July, and bream took out many of the top 10 positions with lengths ranging from 39cm to a whopping 45cm. A mixed bag of stonka flathead, dart, snapper, tailor, and bass also made the top 10.

STORY KYLIE KNIGHT WHEN Wayne Groomes turned 50, he decided it was time to stop keeping his ‘fishing secrets’ to himself.

He created a Facebook page called Land and Bay Fishing SEQ, started making Youtube videos and now has a following of more than 30,000 people.

“Now, I don’t think I have a favourite spot but as far as fishing grounds go, Moreton Bay is so open and there’s so much structure and so many fish,” Wayne said.

He believes we are lucky to have Moreton Bay on our doorstep and for it to sustain such a large population, Wayne reckons it is being managed pretty well.

“I’ve been fishing for as long as I can remember. Dad took me before I could even speak,” Wayne recalled.

There are artificial and natural reefs and grasses that attract a diverse range of fish and other marine life.

He grew up in Inala, but his father would take him to Redcliffe, Sandgate, the Gold

So, with beautiful Moreton Bay offering so much for anglers, what is the most common

mistake they make?

“People think there’s a magic spot and if they go there, they’ll get a fish. It doesn’t exist,” Wayne said.

“Fish are mobile, like people, they move around and chase bait. You just have to keep trying until you find the fish.”

According to Wayne, fishing is the perfect pastime because it can be as cheap or expensive as your lifestyle allows it to be.

“The reason I started the Facebook page was to get locals together with a common interest that might want to fish together for the competitions I run.

There’s been a massive amount of interest,” he said. “I think everyone wants to learn how to do it a little bit better.”

There are two species historically referred to as “summer” whiting and both can be caught in Bramble Bay, Deception Bay, Pine and Caboolture Rivers, and along the Redcliffe peninsula. There is the yellowfin whiting and the sand whiting.

You can distinguish sand and yellowfin whiting by the presence of a very large prominent black spot on the base of the pectoral fins of the sand whiting that is absent from the yellowfin whiting. Yellowfin whiting are a bit stockier than sand whiting and tend to weigh more for a given size, but they do not grow as long. The bag limit for whiting is a combined limit for both species due to the difficulty for an untrained eye in telling the two species apart.

Whiting have well developed sense organs which can sense very small movements of prey in and on the seabed. Worms are well known as the prime bait for whiting with the Redcliffe

DR DAZZA peninsula being a prime location for the collection of rock worms, wriggler and blood worms. My preference for whiting bait is rock worms as they are easy to get and effective. Do not discount the humble live yabby as a whiting bait, particularly for yellowfin whiting.

Sand whiting grow rapidly and most fish caught and retained are three or four years of age although, similar to all fish species, there is variation in age at length. When fishing for whiting keep it simple. Use a 6lb monofilament line and a very light rod.

My preferred hooks are the chemically-sharpened Mustad Fine Worm or the TruTurn hook, both of which are commonly available. Sinker size is critical. Keep changing it up or down, if you are not catching fish.

If this is the case I’d like to extend a big warm-hearted hello! I hope to keep you interested with my personal thoughts on real estate and local market knowledge.

For those familiar with my writing over the last 10 years, it’s great to reconnect in real print for the first time in many months.

way to see my personal sales figures this high in 2 consecutive months. August continued the trend (working 42 days consecutively in July/August kind of proved it). We are seeing an increase in the number of multiple offers whilst at the same time stock levels are rapidly sinking. Signs of a classic “sellers market”. At the moment buyers across the region are reporting very low levels of choice and many are showing increased levels of frustration.

So what happens next? If the trends continue, the run into summer will be STRONG, prices should continue to firm with only Covid likely to be the potential handbrake on the market.

How Covid has changed things. The real estate market has seen some very strong ebbs and flows since the beginning of the year. Let’s take a quick snapshot of the year so far.

Sales in the early part of the year, January and February were strong with decent sales volumes and prices holding firm. This was a follow-on from the later part of 2019. March and April saw increasing restrictions and the new norm of social distancing. No open homes and very limited ability to travel put a MASSIVE DENT in the market (in terms of sales volumes). The good thing was most sellers didn’t panic and we rode out the storm.

If you are thinking of selling the best time to do so is when the market is strong AND when you are ready. If you are thinking of selling, you know where to find me! I’m always happy to talk.

The early part of May saw the easing of some restrictions and volumes of sales started to increase to numbers much closer to what we would normally expect at this time of year.

Moreton Bay Tri to make splash STORY KYLIE KNIGHT TRIATHLETES can’t wait to hit the road, bay and bike for the Moreton Bay Triathlon on September 27 after a long time between competitions.

The event will attract elite competitors, recreational athletes and beginners with four races on offer.

Moreton Bay Triathlon spokeswoman Sally Teiniker said there was a race for everyone - Olympic, Sprint, Enticer and Kool Kids events.

“There is also the option to participate as a team, where one person swims, one rides and another runs,” Teiniker said.

This year, Queensland Triathlon Series has incorporated a stand-alone triathlon at Moreton Bay into its annual seven-race series.

“So over the next year, we will be holding a triathlon in Moreton Bay on September 27 as the first race of the Queensland Triathlon Series (incorporating the rescheduled Moreton Bay

Triathlon from last season), as well as the Moreton Bay Triathlon on May 9, 2021,” Teiniker explained.

Elite athletes will have the opportunity to race as part of the Triathlon Australia Performance Series. They will be racing a non-drafting Olympic distance event (1.5km swim, 40km bike, 10km run).

Clontarf’s Pelican Park will act as a race hub, with all races starting and finishing at this point.

Crews gearing up for double challenge STORY NICK CROCKFORD THE Redcliffe peninsula will still see a fleet of racing yachts this year – despite the Brisbane to Gladstone race being cancelled due to coronavirus.

Queensland Cruising Yacht Club (QCYC) is turning back the clock by expanding next month’s Bribie Cup Yacht Race into a two-day event.

This means more than 50 yachts and their crews are expected to sail from the mouth of the Brisbane River to Bribie on Saturday, September 19.

Yachts will then head to Scarborough, moor overnight at Moreton Bay Boat Club and race for the new QCYC Inter Club Challenge back to the Brisbane River on September 20.

On both days the fleet will sail along the Redcliffe foreshore, just as the entries in the Brisbane to Gladstone race have done every year, except 2020, for 72 years.

The new format for the Bribie Cup weekend evolved from a mid-winter meeting at Manly for a more collective approach to inter-club racing.

“All the clubs were competing for the same boats for their events,” said Harley Cowlishaw, Vice Commodore at QCYC, “so clubs got together to work together.

Mateship Matters to local clubs SPORTS clubs across the Moreton Bay Region and North Brisbane have signed up for Mateship Matters, a new free suicide awareness program.

So far 12 organisations, nine from the Moreton Bay Region, have rolled out training or are about to start the program.

In July, Deception Bay Boxing Club became the first in Queensland to have Mateship Matters’ General Awareness Training.

ACE and Moreton Bay United football clubs have also had their first presentations, while Spiders Boxing Club at Caboolture is supporting the program.

The 12 signatories include five boxing gyms and mixed martial arts centres; four footy clubs; two cricket clubs and one indoor sports centre.

Staring down a milestone STORY NICK CROCKFORD ONE of Peninsula Power’s greatest servants, Jake Reesby will reach a landmark on Saturday when he faces Brisbane City at AJ Kelly Park, kick-off 6.30pm.

The goalkeeper will become the first Power player to reach 200 Premier League appearances across the Brisbane Premier League (BPL), Football Queensland Premier League (FQPL) and National Premier League (NPL).

For almost 10 years, Jake has been the last line of defence as Power won three successive grand finals, moved into the state league, went a whole season undefeated and faced A-League Melbourne City in the last 32 of the FFA Cup.

The expansion comes nine months after the sport arrived in Redcliffe and just weeks after a four-team tournament was held at AJ Kelly Park, Kippa-Ring.

Paddy Higgins, one of the driving forces behind Peninsula Power Walking Football (PPWF), said walking football began for those over 50, but that has now changed.

“A decision has been made to open up walking football for players of all ages and genders,” said Paddy. “We are expressly looking to involve more women in our version of the game.”

Walking Football is a small-sided, low-impact, modified version of football, suitable for all ability and fitness.

IT TOOK one of the toughest nights of Waylon Law’s boxing career to become an Australian champion – and he’s ready to do it again.

Law, from Deception Bay Boxing Club, beat previously undefeated Justin Frost for the super lightweight crown on September 5.

Now the 28-year-old “Outlaw” is prepared to give “Iceman” Frost a rematch, possibly in November, if

both camps agree.

“I’m keen to fight Frost again,” said Law, who only had a week’s rest before returning to training. “I’ll defend my belt. It’s not going anywhere now.”

It took 10 grueling rounds and a split points decision for Law, who lives at Caboolture, to complete a remarkable comeback.

This was his first fight after a three-year break and it couldn’t have been tougher, against an undefeated national champion.

“It was a great fight.

I thought I out-boxed him,” Law said. “It was one of my hardest fights, but I did enough and handled fighting at that weight.

“I was very happy. I have a lot of respect for him, we wished each other good luck before the fight, but I gave an undefeated champion his first defeat.”
