Redcliffe’s generosity shines MOMENTUM is growing for the inaugural Redcliffe Hospital Giving Day, Wednesday October 13, with local business and community groups creating fundraising events to kickstart the appeal.

Redcliffe Hospital Giving Day is being held in partnership with Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital (RBWH) Foundation to raise funds for hospital-led health research, evidence-based patient care programs, health education, innovative equipment and other initiatives.

RBWH Foundation CEO Simone Garske said sup-

port for the appeal was overwhelming, with BallyCara recently announced as the appeal’s first major corporate donor.

“BallyCara’s donation of $10,000 is an act of incredible generosity and shows how highly regarded Redcliffe Hospital is within the community for its commitment to patient care and dedication to life-changing health research,” she said.

BallyCara Executive Chairman Marcus Riley said the organisation was proud to continue a partnership with Redcliffe Hospital which had spanned the past few decades.

“We are pleased to enhance our collaboration with the Redcliffe Hospital supporting improved services to people in the region but also to grow research, education and other initiatives which make a positive impact in our communities,” Mr Riley said.

Maree, queen of desert

STORY NICK CROCKFORD THE figures are remarkable but only tell part of the story of Maree Stephenson’s epic 10 Desert Challenge.

After 127 days, the 54-year-old from Griffin has completed her 10 deserts, 10 tracks, $10,000 cycle ride across Australia and back to Queensland.

Ms Stephenson rode 8777km on her fat-wheeled bike ‘Banjo’ and is believed to be the first to ride the 10 Australian deserts unsupported in one go.

Having suffered from anxiety, her target when leaving Woodford on May 2 was to raise money for Beyond Blue, the mental health organisation.

That was achieved through donations from those she met on the way and followers of her daily blog. The figure is current-

ly $10,849.09 and rising.

“You have helped 222 people seek support from a mental health professional by either phone call, web chat or email through Beyond Blue’s 24/7 Support Service,” the team said.

However, the challenge was also four months of exploring and battling Australia’s interior, emotional and physical highs and lows, unexpected generosity, fear and sadness.

It finished with a huge sandstorm forcing Ms Stephenson to take refuge at a council depot 80km from the finish at Birdsville, where her family was waiting.

“I was mentally and emotionally worn down, pretty exhausted by the end,” Ms Stephenson said, describing the team as her “guardians”.

It was another example of the strength of human kindness which became a feature of the challenge and has had a lasting impact.

“The tougher conditions, the more open and more unconditional the giving. We seem better when we have less.”

The countless acts of kindness included help with punctures, food, water supplies, free accommodation, chocolate and help from strangers who

are now friends.

There was sadness when Nigel Harris, who stopped to help with a puncture, died days later watching a rally and terror at Marble Bar with a figure looming over the entrance to her tent one night. Ms Stephenson hopes to write a book, with proceeds to Beyond Blue and has not ruled out another epic journey.

REDCLIFFE RSL has come a long way since a group of ex-servicemen met at the Seabrae Hotel to discuss how they could support veterans suffering ‘war conditions’ in 1920.

Soon after, they formed the Redcliffe Sub-Branch of the Returned Sailors’ and Soldiers’ Imperial League of Australia (RSSILA) with 15 members, which was later expanded to include airmen.

They met at members’ homes and hotels until the Woody Point Memorial School of Arts Hall was built with the help of Redcliffe City Council in 1922.

That building is now heritage-listed.

In 1948, the Sub-Branch secured land where the RSL is presently located and in 1954 the first section of the Conference Hall (as it was known then) was built.

The following year, a liquor licence was granted and the Redcliffe RSL and Ex-Services Club was formed, separate to the Sub-Branch.

Since then, the building has been renovated and extended five times.

In 2001, the Sub-Branch

and club merged, with a single board of directors.

Profits are used to fund support for veterans through the Vic Reading Pension and Welfare Centre on site.

Redcliffe RSL celebrated its centenary with invited guests at a luncheon on September 18. It was a celebration delayed by 12 months, due to COVID-19.

During the event, President Neville Cullen recounted the history of the Sub-Branch and announced VC recipient Dan Keighran as Redcliffe RSL’s patron and recipient of the service award bearing his name.

Mr Keighran could not be present for the event, but his representative Marcus Randall accepted it on his behalf.

Mr Cullen was also recognised for his service to the RSL and presented with a tie pin.

RSL National President Greg Melick travelled from Hobart for the event.

He said there were 1154 SubBranches across Australia and the RSL was making progress in its discussions with government about the need for better support of veterans.

“We’re the oldest, the proudest and most effective (organisation),” he said.

Mr Melick said to keep going for another 100 years, the RSL had to embrace younger members and make them welcome. He said he had heard good things about Redcliffe in this regard.

Also in attendance was ex-servicewoman Avis Hall who turned 100 the same year as Redcliffe RSL, State Member for Redcliffe Yvette D’Ath, Mayor Peter Flannery and councillors Karl Winchester and Sandra Ruck.

A commemorative plaque was unveiled at the event and will be displayed on the outside of the RSL building near the front entrance.

“This is an important body of work, but it’s a document that will only have real meaning if we act on the expectations you’ve outlined for us,” he said.

“You have spoken, we have listened, and now it’s time for Council to act.

“Releasing these results is the start of a new conversation with Council, not the conclusion of a report.”

The topics measured during the process includ-

ed Community Resilience, Community Values, Performance of Council, Responsiveness, Fairness of Council Resource Allocation, Transparency of Council Processes and Trust in Council and Others.

The survey also asked respondents where Council could improve, with two key themes emerging according to the report: buildings and development; and protecting and preserving the environment.

Ninety percent of respondents said environmental preservation was “very”, or “extremely” important,

while 85 percent indicated Council’s role in managing building and development as “very important” or “extremely important”, with 41 percent saying they were “somewhat satisfied” with its performance.

The three key themes that emerged as priorities for the region were pride in the natural beauty of the region, and an overwhelming desire for it to be better protected; a love of the existing lifestyle, with concerns about affordability and housing for future generations; and strong enthusiasm for more ac-

tive recreation and lifestyle options in neighbourhoods and communities, in addition to major parks and destinations.

Mayor Flannery said he was proud of the Council’s achievements in its first year, but it was clear locals wanted the organisation to go further.

“This will mean a much sharper focus on planning and good planning outcomes, to ensure we provide the necessary infrastructure including local parks and recreation space, and essential roads to service our communities.”

THE region’s natural beauty, affordable lifestyle, access to an active lifestyle and access to services are among the community’s priorities, a comprehensive survey commissioned

by Moreton Bay Regional Council has found.

Council’s community engagement survey, Moreton Says, attracted more than 4100 responses, 34 percent of them from Redcliffe or North Lakes.

Moreton Says revealed what is most important to community members

across the region and to visitors and the results will be used to help Council make decisions.

The anchor survey, conducted between April 29 and June 13, will be followed by a series of shorter “Pulse” surveys every few months to allow Council to monitor changes to views.

A SOCIAL marketing campaign led by Griffith University to help save koalas from preventable deaths and injuries is about to expand.

Piloted by the Redland City Council in 2017 the Leave It dog training program, co-designed by Social Marketing @ Griffith (SM@G) researchers, has reduced koala deaths from dog attacks in the area by 40 per cent.

Funding provided by the Department of Environment and Science will be used to design and deliver a co-ordinated koala awareness campaign and threat management initiative to support the SEQ Koala Conservation Strategy 2020-2025 in partnership with local governments.

Founding Director of Social Marketing @ Griffith Professor Sharyn Rundle-Thiele said the next 12-month project would take a broader approach.

“We will also survey people to find out what they’re already doing, and our hope is to see an increase over time in those positive actions across SEQ.” The first community koala survey is now open. IT HAS taken four years for Fletcher Middleton to grow his tumbling tresses, so when his mum Lauren decided it was time to cut them off, she searched for a way to put them to good use.

She came across the Kids with Cancer Foundation’s Wigs 4 Kids campaign and knew she had found the right cause.

A date has been set and fundraising efforts have begun, with $5000 the target set.

Mrs Middleton said she had seen children having treatment for cancer, while at the hospital with her own children or when visiting friends’ children who were unwell.

“As a parent, I can’t think of anything worse,” she said.

Fletcher, of Newport, said he wanted a haircut similar to older brother Harlem, 7.

“When I chop off my hair, it’s going to be super cool,” he said.

“He’s very excited. It will be different for him, but I think he’ll like it,” Mrs Middleton said.

She said Fletcher had a trim, when he was eight

He will have his first proper haircut on October 1 during an event in the carpark at Kids Capers Childcare at Scarborough, where he goes to kindergarten.

The event will include a sausage sizzle, face painting and a raffle.

Mrs Middleton is hoping the money raised will give Fletcher’s total a significant boost.

“People have been really supportive. I mentioned it and they’ve said how can we get behind it, we’ll do some fundraising.

“I’ve been shocked that everyone’s really getting behind it,” she said.

So far, Fletcher and his family have raised just over $1000.

ECHO Echo first came to Peninsula Animal Aid as a stray two years ago. She was lucky, as she was adopted four months later, and has enjoyed a great life with a lady until recently.

Queensland Strawberry farmers put out an urgent SOS – Save Our Strawberries – to help tackle over-supply issues.

Unitywater has bought strawberries from LuvaBerry Farm in Wamuran, McMartins Farm in Bli Bli and Eumundi Farm Fresh. The punnets will be delivered to Caboolture Community Action, OzHarvest and Maroochy Neighbourhood Centre.

The event attracted about 30,000 people across both days.

It was organised by Moreton Bay Region Industry and Tourism (MBRIT) and Kites Queensland in partnership with Moreton Bay Regional Council and Tourism and Events Queensland.

MBRIT Chairman Shane Newcombe said it was the perfect chance for families to get out and have some fun – something they have not been able to do much this year.

“The massive kites and the Kids Karnival zone are always huge drawcards, but this year we added the Bluey and Bingo stage show twice daily. The kids loved it,” Mr Newcombe said.

“There were a bunch of new kites in the sky this year, including a giant crocodile, a witch on a broom and a redback spider. They looked amazing.

“It was also great to see

so many families joining in the fun and flying their own kites in the public flying areas across the weekend.”

The event even hosted the daily COVID-19 press conference on the Sunday, with Deputy Premier Steven Miles, Health Minister Yvette D’Ath and Chief Health Officer Jeanette Young there to announce the good news that there had been no new locally acquired cases. They bought donuts to celebrate a ‘double-donut’ day.

Ms D’Ath praised MBRIT for organising Redcliffe KiteFest and said it was an event that would not have been possible anywhere else on the east coast of Australia at present due to COVID-19 outbreaks in other states.

Moreton Bay Regional Council Mayor Peter Flannery said the roaring success of Kitefest was a sign life was getting back to normal in the Moreton Bay Region.

Group needs mentors

BRISBANE Seniors Online (BSOL) is in desperate need of more volunteers for its expanded service in Redcliffe and now North Lakes.

Moreton Bay Region’s growing population is increasing demand for the service which has covered greater Brisbane for more than 20 years.

Tutors are needed to help seniors and those over 50 with computers and internet at the learner’s home, on their own

computer or device and at a pace which suits them.

It covers minimising the risk of scams and fraud, making devices safe from viruses and malware and teaches Windows, Apple, android and smart phones.

Learners receive, as a guide, 12 hours of lessons.

When complete, they get ongoing support for the rest of their membership year.

Ideally, tutors need to be around the same age as those they are teaching.

The average age of BSOL

learners is 74 years.

There are no paid staff at BSOL, but tutors are helped through the Mentor Support Group, which meets through Zoom.

Moreton Bay Regional Council has made a financial contribution towards promoting Brisbane Seniors Online.

STORY JODIE POWELL A SURGE in motorcycle registrations in the past 18 months has prompted a plea from Moreton Bay Region police for drivers and riders to take care on our roads.

Moreton District Crime Prevention Co-ordinator Sergeant Sarah Grayson said already more motorcyclists had died on the state’s roads than for the whole of last year.

By September 12, 50 motorcyclists had perished, compared with 35 in 2020 – an increase of 42 percent – while the number of motorcycle, moped and pillion passengers hospitalised after an accident increased by 24.5 percent in the first three months of this year alone.

DOZENS of volunteers have helped federal Petrie MP Luke Howarth transform the graffiti-ridden former Red Rooster building at Kippa-Ring.

The Elizabeth Ave outlet closed in September 2014 and in the years since has been daubed with tags and other graffiti.

Mr Howarth, who lives at Clontarf, said he had been driving past the empty building for years and was sick of looking at an eyesore.

“It just looked terrible,” he said.

He sought help from Moreton Bay Regional Council and the State Government, but says they were powerless to force the owner to paint over the slogans.

Instead, he turned to the real estate agent tasked with selling the site and found the owner had painted the building previously, but vandals had returned.

“The reality is that building is on the main thoroughfare in and out of Redcliffe,” Mr Howarth said.

“People come through that area on their way to the Sunshine Coast, and it’s just a bad look.”

Mr Howarth contacted the owner seeking permission to paint the building black before posting about his mission social media.

His video of the site attracted the attention of Clontarf painters Allscale Brushworx who offered to donate their time and ex-

“We had about 20 volunteers, including a family of five with a guy whose birthday it was, and a lady who drove over from Bald Hills,” Mr Howarth said.

“We knocked it over in about two-and-a-half hours and it cost $600 in paint.”

Mr Howarth says the support of volunteers showed people were sick of seeing graffiti spoiling the landscape.

“If the community looks untidy, I think it can escalate from there.

“I am calling on everyone to keep the place beautiful and show a bit of pride.”

The Head of Sesame Lane said the rewards and recognition program was launched on Educators’ Day on September 1.

Warriors lock in Redcliffe base STORY KYLIE KNIGHT

WHEN the Vodafone Warriors were looking for an Australian base for the 2022 NRL season, the club’s only thought was Redcliffe.

In announcing the move on September 9, Warriors CEO Cameron George said returning to the club’s New Zealand base was unrealistic due to ongoing border restrictions created by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mr George said the team and club officials would sleep, train and work in the Moreton Bay Region.

“Our intention is to play six games in Redcliffe next year and with all things going our way and the borders opening we’ll be

able to take six games back to our great home at Mount Smart Stadium,” he said.

He wants to start the offseason strongly, training as one and offering the playing group and club staff stability.

“It allows families and their kids to be settled.

This year, we’ve had five different homes in the space of 10 months,” Mr George said.

“We look forward to working alongside the Redcliffe Dolphins and doing our fans proud back in New Zealand as well as our new fan base up there.”

Preseason training will start on November 8 and the club’s aim is to have everyone settled by then.

“We’ve got to try to get the personal life as stable as possible to enhance the professional side of things,” he said.

Mr George said it had been stressful year for the club. The decision to base themselves in the Moreton Bay Region was a relief.

“It’s a wonderful, wonderful region. Every time we’ve been there for whatever reason – whether our players have been there to play for the Redcliffe Dolphins – everyone’s been hospitable, welcoming. It goes without saying what they’ve done over the last (few) years in building a facility there is first class,” he said.

MANGO Hill teenager Makenzi Goodwin has been selected for the globe’s biggest acting showcase, which will be shown live next week.

The 14-year-old has two entries in the Australian Regional Finals of the World Monologue Games.

Makenzi will perform both during the livestreamed regional finals on Saturday (September 25) from 9pm.

Public voting will be open for 48 hours with the winners of six categories vying for $5000 in the global finals.

“I’m so excited that I get to compete for my country doing what I love,” the St Benedict’s College student said.“It’s really fantastic to be part of this amazing event.”

Makenzi’s first monologue is by American Playwright Tara Meddaugh and about

a teenage girl called to the principal’s o f f i c e after being pushed to breaking point by a n o t h e r student.

“This is such a great piece to perform,” she said.

Her second monologue is a more dramatic piece about a 16-year-old imploring her mother to listen to her and understand how dedicated she is to figure skating.

Giving at heart of Lions club STORY KYLIE KNIGHT FOR Barry Maxfield, being a member of Lions is about raising money to help those in need in the community.

The foundation member of North Lakes Lions said that desire to make a difference motivated him to help start the club 13 years ago.

Mr Maxfield has a passion for helping people with disabilities, which goes back to childhood when his grandmother, who was blind and had Hansen’s disease lived with his family.

He said Lions seemed like a good organisation to get involved with because members worked hard to raise money to support people who needed it.

“I’ve never aspired to be the chair of Lions. I just wanted to be a worker. I just want to help raise money so we could fundraise for people’s needs. We’ve done a lot of that,” he said.

helped many including a couple of people with disabilities whose wish to meet Broncos players was granted about three years ago.

“It’s brought a lot of satisfaction that we’ve helped a lot of people in our community and continue to do so,” he said.

Most of his time is spent on his role as chairman of Fina, a growing support service for people with high needs disability based at Burpengary.

Mr Maxfield said he worked with all levels of government to give them an understanding of what the group was trying to achieve and to secure support.

The grandfather of 10 and great-grandfather of one is also passionate about music and rugby league – he’s a Norths Devils life member and played as a junior.

He also played rhythm guitar and sang harmonies with a rock band called The Limited Blues for 14 years in the 1960s and ‘70s.

Mr Maxfield, 77, worked hard from the day he left school as a 14-year-old and ran his family business – All Brands Treatment Plant Service − with wife Cheryl before retiring.

The couple, who now call Burpengary home, lived at North Lakes for 16 years, moving in when stage two of the development was being built. Mr Maxfield said they were there before Westfield.

He said the North Lakes Lions club was inclusive, welcoming men and women

and members of all abilities.

“We didn’t want it to be a men’s club. In fact, I think we have more ladies than men now and that’s a good thing,” Mr Maxfield said.

He has been Cake Chairman and Mint Chairman for many years, enjoying those roles which are at the forefront of the club’s fundraising efforts, along with sausage sizzles at Bunnings.

“They’re a friendly bunch of people. They work well together,” he said.

ITS IS a wonderful feeling now that spring has arrived, and with the temperatures rising, being able to bid farewell to a drawn-out winter.

We’ve been busy with our new board, activating committees and “lining our ducks in a row”, so to speak, to achieve the best results for the projects that we are undertaking.

COVID-19 is still playing a huge part in our daily lives, though I think the vast majority of us are consistently doing the right thing with social distancing, the check in app, getting a test if we have any symptoms, making sure we get the two jabs, wearing masks and only moving about when necessary. Hopefully once we progress into the 80 per cent of the state being vaccinated, we’ll start to settle down into some sense of normality again.

MALE magpies are in full swoop this time of year as they protect their young from predators of all shapes and sizes.

Griffith University School of Environment and Science Professor Emeritus Darryl Jones says the breeding season can start in July and continue through to December, but peak swooping happens in September when most magpies have chicks in their nests.

“It’s primarily the males continuing to do their main job of keeping threats away from the nest. Normally, that would be snakes, goannas, cats etc but just a few add people to the list,” Professor Emeritus Jones says.

He says males do more than protect the nest, they also share the baby-feeding duties equally with the females.

As soon as the young leave the nest, the swooping stops.

“Of the 10 per cent of magpies who swoop people (90 per cent never do), they almost always specialise on pedestrians, cyclists or posties and ignore the other types,” Professor Emer-

Story behind attention-grabbing 0410 439 662 playing surface SELLING THE PENINSULA FOR OVER 20 YEARS! STORY KYLIE KNIGHT THE NRL action on the field at Moreton Daily Stadium has been exhilarating, but the playing surface itself has grabbed the attention of players and officials.

And the Dolphins’ ground crew has worked with Twin View Turf and Lawn Solutions Australia to ensure it has looked magnificent on television screens across the country.

The playing surface uses TifTuff turf, which was installed during the stage two of the stadium’s development − the first in Australia to use it.

Twin View Turf Project Manager Trent Hobson said there was about 10,000sqm of the turf at the venue and it has now been used on the club’s training field.

“It’s drought-tolerant, lower input fertiliser-wise and rapid repair, so it wears much better than other varieties,” Mr Hobson said.

“We’ve now got it on probably 10 sports fields across Brisbane and the Gold Coast now.”

“Nationally, it’s on Campbelltown Stadium that’s also hosted some NRL games in Sydney but right around Australia I’d say it would probably be on 50-60 sporting fields now,” Mr Adermann said.

“This was the first to have a full field and then it’s expanded, not to this exposure, but in school fields, high-wear areas … South Bank in Brisbane and a number of other sporting fields around Australia.”

Dolphins General Manager Football Operations Grant Cleal said the playing surface was a hot topic of conversation at the NRL double-header on August 29.

“It’s what everyone was talking about, pre-match

and even post-match – among all the players that I spoke with and all the NRL team staff,” Mr Cleal said.

He said the Channel 9 floor manager, Tony Chalmers, who covers rugby league told him it was the best surface he’d seen anywhere at any rugby league ground.

“Because of the type of venue it is – a genuine multipurpose venue with the A-League, our games, NRL games, we’ve had a few carnivals, Australian Schoolboys Championships – this is what it looks like every week. It’s unbelievable.

“At one point, over a 10day period we’d had three A-League games and two Intrust Super Cup days

consisting of Colts and first grade. It had some traffic on it. The women’s competition was in between that and they played about 28 games over a three-day period.

It holds up well.”

The team keeping it in tiptop condition is made up of Twin View Turf, Lawn Solutions Australia, Grant Cleal and the grounds grew which includes Dolphins’ players Tyson Cleal and Ryan Turner.

“As far as the redevelopment of the stadium goes, I reckon it’s the best thing we’ve done … the decision to put this down,” Mr Cleal said.

“You can have 1000 things go wrong, but if your field looks good everyone tends to focus on that.”

Mr Adermann said TifTuff turf was bred in the US, by Dr Brian Schwartz from Tifton University for its drought tolerance but was also less nutrient-dependent and could handle highwear.

BANCROFT MP Chris Whiting says there are financial benefits for owners of electric vehicles, but the reduced impact on the environment is the biggest benefit of all…

LOWER car registration, lower stamp duty and lower impact on the environment are among the benefits of owning an electric vehicle, according to Bancroft state MP Chris Whiting.

Speaking at a morning tea hosted with Moreton Bay Region Councillor Jodie Shipway (Div 4) to mark World EV Awareness Day at Village Motors North Lakes, Mr Whiting said increasing the number of zero-emission vehicles on our roads would play an important role in helping the State Government to reach its goal of net zero emissions by 2050.

“It (owning an electric vehicle) is a saving, and you’re contributing to a better future,” he said.

Cr Shipway attended the event, driving Moreton Bay Regional Council’s first electric vehicle.

She said the Hyundai Ioniq was quiet to drive and she’s excited Council is trialling an electric vehicle.

Youngsters star in family favourite STORY KYLIE KNIGHT PREPARE to enter the swamp with Shrek, Princess Fiona and Donkey when students from St Benedict’s College bring Shrek the Musical to the stage next month.

The show tells the story of an ogre who is forced to embark on a journey with a donkey to rescue a princess from a vile lord and regain his swamp.

It will star more than 60 students from St Benedict’s Primary School and College and is being directed by drama teachers Paula Mary Camilleri and Teagan Fudge. Students have also helped make props, paint and will work backstage during the production.

It will be staged at St Benedict’s Primary Hall, 22 Benedict’s Close,

Mango Hill, from October 7-9.

Students have been working on the production since May, learning valuable lessons about teamwork. Older students have been helping their younger counterparts, fostering a sense of community.

Splash of colour for a cause STUDENTS at Southern Cross Catholic College embraced colour on a whole new level this month, when they took part in a colour run to raise money for a new barbecue area.

Head of the Scarborough Primary Campus Renae Collier said more than 400 children were involved from Prep to Year 6 on September 2.

“We were looking for a fun community event which Harriet Miller, Mason Edwards and Lily-Jade Crosbie. also allowed us to raise

money.

Unfortunately, COVID placed a few restrictions on parent involvement however they were able to come along and watch their students participate,” Ms Collier said.

“To participate in the event the children needed to register with the Colour Frenzy Fun Run company who were facilitating the event. Through our parent representative Sarah Shelley, we were able to reduce

the registration fee to $10 per student from $15.

“To make it even more affordable for families and ensure everyone could participate, we approached the community for sponsorship of the event.”

The school received 14 offers of sponsorship which reduced the registration fee to $5 per student.

STORY KYLIE KNIGHT WHEN Mick and Sonya Horsburgh started their business Tubeworx in 2009, it was just the two of them bending tubes by hand in their Clontarf workshop.

Almost 14 years later, it has grown to a team of 25 and the tubes they are bending are used in Australian Defence Force vehicles including personnel carriers and F35 joint strike fighters, as well as heavy mining machinery and marine craft.

Decades of experience have brought the couple to this point. Mr Horsburgh was in the Navy for 11 years in the marine engineering branch.

When he left the Navy, he bought a hydraulic hose mobile repair franchise before starting his own mobile van service which focused more on automotive repairs.

One of his customers was a motor dealership where Sonya worked. She became his bookkeeper before they went into business together for 10 years. Their combined experience teamed

perfectly during that first decade and came to the fore when they started Tubeworx.

“We were asked by a customer to bend automotive brake lines they had one of their workers bending them by hand and they didn’t want to continue

CLEANAWAY has joined forces with social enterprise TradeMutt to promote conversations about mental health in the workplace.

Announcing the partnership on the eve of RUOK? Day, which was held on September 9, Cleanaway’s executive general manager human resources Joh Birgersson said it was crucial the company provided support to remove the barriers to reach out.

“The whole idea is to get a conversation about mental health going and it’s so important, especially in the current situation we are in with lockdowns,” Mr Purontakanen said.

“I have learnt to openly talk about the struggles I’ve been through and, when I

“I can honestly say that if it wasn’t for the support my family and a couple of my closest friends always pushing me to talk to them, then I may not be here today.”

As well as TradeMutt’s eye-catching workwear which sparks conversations, the organisation raises funds for a mental health support service for blue-collar workers.

Some of the funds from workwear sales fund a free call and text service, called

‘This Is A Conversation Starter’, or TIACS, which has provided more than 2250 hours of mental health support from psychologists.

“We’re excited to announce this partnership, which is about more than just wearing a loud shirt on Fridays,” Mr Birgersson said. “It’s about creating more spaces where our teams around the country feel comfortable having a conversation.”

Mr Purontakanen said he was pleased to be part of the partnership launch.

Sky’s the limit at North Lakes STORY JODIE POWELL He wasn’t even born when the first three Star Wars movies were released, but that didn’t stop Griffin’s Brad Drew becoming a massive fan.

“I was born in 1988, so I got on board with it in the early ’90s,” he said.

“Ever since I saw it, it’s just been part of my life.”

Mr Drew will join likeminded Star Wars buffs for the ultimate event at North Lakes next month.

As a member of Star Walking, which bills itself as Australia’s oldest Star Wars fan club, Mr Drew will don an X-Wing pilot costume that took him two months to make for Skyforce Queensland at the North Lakes Community Centre.

It’s a day where like-minded fans come together to share their passion for the franchise.

There will be presentations, and fans will share news and take part in discussions about what the Star Wars universe is offering and what’s up and coming.

Among the fun will be quizzes, costume competitions, vintage and modern collections to view, and a tattoo artist who owns a Star Wars-themed tattoo studio, as well as vendors selling movie-themed merchandise.

Mr Drew said the first Queensland event on the Sunshine Coast in September was a huge success, with more than 50 people attending.

The North Lakes event was scheduled for August,

but cancelled due to COVID restrictions – but not before more than 80 people had bought tickets.

Mr Drew’s favourite movie of the franchise was The Empire Strikes Back, which was released in 1980.

“It’s the visual thing. It was made back when they had to use practical special effects.

“It’s amazing that they built everything you see on the screen by hand.”

He’s only been involved with Star Walking since March after being roped in by friends who were part of the Queensland committee, but is impressed by the diversity of membership.

“It brings people together over a common love – our members are from all walks of life.

“We are well and truly nerdy Star Wars fans.

“It’s no longer just males, there is a huge female following.”

Mr Drew is looking forward to dressing up as Luke Skywalker for Skyforce.

“One of our members worked on the films – he was part of the prop designing and creating.

“He’s inspired me to create my own costume – it’s all very new – I didn’t get involved in Cosplay.”

While he’s going to Skyforce as Skywalker, his favourite character is Hans Solo.

“It’s his swagger – he is the coolest dude going around and he’s always cool, calm and collected.”

Well and truly nerdy Star Wars fans SKYFORCE is at the North Lakes Community Centre on October 2 from 10am-4pm.

blitz STORY KYLIE KNIGHT WHO said spring cleaning had to be confined to the indoors?

With longer days and pleasant daytime temperatures, it is the perfect time of year to have a clean-up outside as well.

Many plants in the garden are coming back to life after winter and need pruning to stimulate new growth in the run-up to summer.

There are others that need shaping and containing to ensure they do not go wild in the growing season.

Hayden Campbell, who owns Urban Outdoor Power Equipment at North Lakes, said spring was a great time to get out in the yard and have a good clean-up.

It is a chance to turn over garden beds, prune bushes, tidy up or cut down trees, clear paths and outdoor areas of dead leaves and other matter, trim hedges and remove weeds.

“Right now, I’m finding a lot of

people are doing trimming and hedging. All your hedges are starting to grow quite quickly after winter,” Mr Campbell said.

“The rain we had early last week will create a lot of growth as well with the heat coming. So, hedge trimmers and pole saws are the main tools people will be using. Towards the end of next month, it’s going to be brush cutters and push mowers.”

“For your general-purpose clean-up, you’ll need a chainsaw, hedge cutter, pole saw and all of that sort of gear especially if you’re doing big trims on big trees.

“If it’s more a lawn renovation, then a good lawn mower, whipper snipper and small pruning shears are perfect.”

Mr Campbell said his store stocked Stihl products for small and larger properties, and commercial use.

Battery-powered products are a good option because they are easy to start, light-weight and will do the job.

“It’s particularly the case for the chainsaw, it is easy to start. It is the same with the whipper snipper and the blower. For female operators and even elderly gentlemen who can’t start other machines, these are perfect,” he said.

“A lot of people with pacemakers can’t use electronic ignitions, but they can use battery because it’s insulated.

They are good, you can do anything with them.”

Mr Campbell said small midrange options were perfect for medium to larger properties and once the big jobs are done, you can enjoy the space for a while.

“It will be a good 12 months until it has to be done again, which is where battery-powered equipment is really handy. With petrol, 12 months of it sitting in the shed … the fuel goes stale, things get hard to start … with the battery, you plug it in the wall, you charge it put it in the machine and away you go,” he said.

HAYDEN’S TOP TIPS 1. Buy quality, don’t buy cheap products. If you buy a cheaper brand, you’ll buy it twice.

2. Make sure you’ve got the right product for your yard. There are three different ranges to choose from and you have to know what you need.

5. Chat to an expert about the size of your block and what run-time you’ll need from your battery.

3. Safety. Make sure you have safe machinery for the job. All the Stihl products have three-point engagement and you have to have all three engaged before you start it.

Whereas many other products you pull the trigger and it will run.

4. If unsure get some advice. There’s no question the team can’t answer.

You want to be able to do the whole job without having to put the battery on charge.

MEAL PLANNER

If you have a sweet tooth, this is the perfect treat without overindulging. The caramel is cleverly made from dates, and the recipe also uses natural cashew butter and dark chocolate, which are both healthier alternatives compared to other butter and chocolate options. This recipe is vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free and egg-free.

Ingredients

• ¼ cup cashew butter • ½ cup pitted medjool dates • ¼ cup of very hot water • ¼ tsp sea salt flakes

Method

1. Line a muffin tin with 16 mini cupcake cups.

2. Put dates and ¼ cup of hot water into a food processor,

add the salt and blend together until the mixture is smooth.

3. Melt the chocolate and oil in a bowl on a water bath or in

the microwave until the chocolate is melted and the oil is incorporated.

4. Fill a piping bag with the melted chocolate, snip a small opening at the end and pipe the chocolate in the cup halfway up, covering the sides and the bottom, about 1-2cm thick. Refrigerate for 3-5 minutes to allow the chocolate to set.

5. Spoon ¼ tsp of date caramel and ¼ tsp cashew butter into the chocolate cup, flatten them a little with the back of the spoon.

Pipe the rest of the melted chocolate on top to seal the caramel in.

6. While the chocolate is still wet, gently tap the cup to flatten the top and sprinkle the coconut on top.

7. Allow the cups to set in the fridge for another 5 minutes.

Store them in an airtight container.

WHILE we've discussed the main types of lures, there are still more sub-categories and hybrids within those we've briefly examined. Hybrid hard body/soft plastics, pre-rigged and pre-tuned soft plastics, flies, skirted trolling lures and many more.

Hopefully the main recurring point has been recognised.

Experimentation is the key to consistently successful lure fishing.

Whilst this experimentation can be frustrating due to the innumerable combinations of models, colours and styles available, once we start to crack the pattern, we should be able to narrow down our experimentation range to less than 10 lures on a given day, targeting a particular species. If you apply this experimentation mindset to retrieval techniques, you’ll be well on your way to a successful outing.

One last point that I'd like to make is that, as in most of the things we utilise throughout our daily lives, we get what we pay for. Lures higher in price do deliver more bang for our buck.

Some are made from tougher materials or use a more robust method of construction. Others may be sporting higher quality terminal tackle or deliver a significantly increased fish attracting action. Some brands will give more consistency across batches of the same model due to higher standards of quality control and tighter tolerances in their machining, materials or moulds. And some will deliver all of these characteristics in one package.

While these lures can sound unbeatable, lower-priced lures do still have their place. That keyword – experimentation

– pops up again. It may be a case of the angler themselves needing to impart more action to the lure during the retrieve, upgrading terminal tackle if the factory supplied gear isn't up to the task, or something as simple as utilising a lower drag setting when fighting a fish using a particular lure.

FISHING REPORT • Our summer fish have started to arrive but a few cold days in mid-September slowed them down. Hopefully things will have warmed up again by the time this edition goes to print.

• Still a few tailor around but they're definitely on the downhill run of the season. Some great catches by some of our locals on their trips to Fraser Island.

• Land-based golden trevally, GTs, and some tarpon have all been caught around the peninsula in the past week or so. Fingers crossed for some more cobia, like last season, and a few murmurs about what the threadfin salmon will be like this time around as well. Fingers crossed for a good prawn season.

• School mackerel should return right around the peninsula off the jetties, rocky points and inshore reefs as well as the Pine River mouth and Ted Smout platform, and out in the bay on the beacons and reefs.

• Consistent flathead fishing in the Pine River, Hays Inlet, Clontarf foreshore and off Scarborough Spit.

• Summer whiting becoming more consistent. Try the beaches, rivers, creeks and sandflats.

• Squire and snapper are still firing well off the rocks and inshore reefs around the peninsula as well as the reefs on both sides of Moreton with some good tuskies thrown into the mix.

• Quality bream are still being caught although not in their usual wintertime numbers.

Ask IN THIS edition, let’s talk about the humble pilchard. It’s the mainstay for many a bait fisher in our region that can be used to target a range of species including tailor and snapper.

Pilchards belong to the family Clupeidae and there are about 200 species worldwide.

The common name of pilchard and sardine are used interchangeably for several species. The Australian species is referred to by the scientific name of Sardinops sagax.

The species can be found from about Bundaberg southwards around the Australian mainland and northern Tasmania to about Shark Bay in Western Australia. There are four different sub-populations, with fish in NSW and southern Queensland forming a separate single subpopulation.

Pilchards can occur from the near surf zone to depths of well over 100m. Despite being a relatively small fish, pilchards can reach up to nine years of age. By comparison, there are very few tailor caught in Queensland that are that old.

Large schools of pilchards migrate into Queensland for spawning, with the spawning period centred on June and October. They are mature at about two years of age.

Depending on body size, female fish produce 10,000-45,000 eggs per spawning event. Larvae that are produced are thought to float southwards on the East Australian Current – just like

In more southern latitudes, spawning occurs at different times. Schools of pilchards can travel up to 30km per day.

Most pilchards that are caught commercially for bait are captured by purse seine netting in NSW and the waters of southern and Western Australia. This is a targeted method of fishing that typically relies on detecting schools of fish by sonar.

In 1995 and 1998/99, Australian pilchard populations were decimated by a virus (a type of herpes) that was introduced into Australia. This led to a mass dieoff with hundreds of millions of dead pilchards washing up on beaches and creating a sad and smelly environmental problem.

The significant and rapid reduction in pilchard populations resulted in impacts on their predators including penguins in cooler waters that had higher mortality rates and failed to breed due to food shortages. The virus is now endemic in Australian pilchard populations, but mass mortality no longer occurs.

Commencing his real estate career on the 4th January 2010 on the Redcliffe Peninsula, Stephan quickly became known for his unorthodox advertising techniques.

Former Bullivant mansion sells for record price ONE of two ‘his and hers’ mansions on the waterfront at Redcliffe built by vitamin king Vaughan Bullivant and his former wife Carmel in the early 2000s has been sold again for a record price.

The plantation-style home was reportedly sold in 2014 for more than $5 million.

Stephanie Williams at Ray White Scarborough sold the home, on August 28 this year, via auction for an undisclosed amount on but says it is a new record.

Ms Williams said the buyer and seller requested the details of the sale not be disclosed and both parties wished to remain anonymous.

The former home of Carmel Bullivant, at 120 Prince Edward Pde, Scarborough, attracted plenty of interest from locals, interstate and overseas buyers.

The buyer bought it sight-unseen, is familiar with the area and plans to make it their home.

Ms Williams said the nature of the sale was a reflection of the market at present.

“There’s lots of this going on at the moment,” she said.

But there were plenty of other people keen to look at the home on the day, with more than 150 attending the inspection and auction.

“There were people everywhere. We had to shoo them out of the house. A lot of people came to see what a real mansion was like, particularly in that location,” Ms Williams said.

“That house was always going to create some interest and activity. We expected it to be quite popular. It’s not too often you get to see that calibre of home.”

The home on 1742sqm of prime waterfront real estate has six bedrooms, four bathrooms, five separate living areas, three-car garage, 80sqm rumpus/games room and much more.

Ms Williams said interest in homes on the Redcliffe peninsula was growing as people discovered how beautiful the area was.

“We’re seeing more people come into the area willing to invest that type of money,” she said.

IT was do or die on Saturday against the Sunshine Coast Falcons and we came out victorious winning 40 points to 20.

After a disappointing loss to Souths, the week before, we got together as a group and held each other accountable to our own standards.

I thought we made a real improvement in our game, however there is still plenty to work on.

This week we take on Tweed Seagulls at Tugun on Saturday to secure a spot in the grand final qualifier.

There is a huge opportunity this year with the QRL announcing the semi-finals will be played before the NRL Grand Final at Suncorp Stadium.

Tweed have beaten us on both occasions this year, so we know it is a tough task ahead. A big week of preparation lays ahead.

STORY KYLIE KNIGHT THE Dolphins Intrust Super Cup side will need to keep improving and bring their best game to Tugun, if they are to beat Tweed Seagulls in the second week of semi-finals this weekend.

It will be a tight contest on Saturday, when the fifthplaced Dolphins take on their fourth-placed rivals.

The Dolphins have lost both encounters with Tweed this season, but there were just two points in it when

they last met in round 11.

The match-up follows a resounding 40-20 win against Sunshine Coast Falcons at Moreton Daily Stadium on September 18.

The Dolphins led 14-8 at halftime and extended the lead in the second half to keep their season alive.

There were tries to Trai Fuller, Will Partridge (2), Edward Kosi, Tom Ale, Jeremy Hawkins and Viliami Vailea.

Improvement has been the focus all season and will continue to be what the coach is looking for at training this week and on Saturday against Tweed.

“They’re a really good footy team. I’ve got a lot of respect for them. They’re a big footy team and have good skills in their forwards as well, and a couple of big outside backs,” he said.

Mogg said his side would be aiming to nullify Toby Sexton’s kicking game and centre Brayden McGrady

who is “crafty with the footy”.

“They’re real title contenders, but at this time of year everyone playing can win it,” Mogg said.

He said being in the top four was not an advantage this year, given there has been so much time off and disruption to the season.

So, what’s Mogg’s message to the team this week?

“Just focusing on improving. Each week it gets a bit harder. There are some areas in our game we can improve on. The challenge is to make sure

Padres on course to retain national crown WITH registrations up on last year, Redcliffe Padres is set to retain its crown as Australia’s largest single season baseball club.

This is despite having to cap its women’s pre-Christmas competition at four teams (from five last year) and losing some players to a new team at Pine Rivers.

At the time of writing, registrations for the new season were around 400, with almost 60 in Little League (Under 13) alone.

Those numbers will see Padres fielding Division One teams in Little League and Junior League (Under

Lachlan Wilson and Ben Walmsley.

Fifteen players and officials from Padres are involved in Baseball Queensland’s new Futures League – a 10-week competition for those aged 17-24.

It is designed to provide a development pathway to careers in the ABL (Australian Baseball League).

Fixtures began last week.

A number of Padres’ Under 16 and Under 18 players will also be representing North Brisbane Region at the state championships in Darra and Sheldon on October 1-4 Padres has welcomed back Phil Overlack as head coach for its Division One side.

The season starts with the women’s teams in action on October 2 and other teams beginning a week later.

Matty said he was humbled by all the accolades.

“It really does mean a lot

because it means I did very well.

“The players thought I was a good captain and good player – I was really proud,” he said.

Matty was not alone in his success – the Tigers’ inaugural 13 girls team made history with a 5.6-36 to 4.4-28 grand final win over Morningside, claiming

the club’s first youth girls team premiership.

Under 16 Yellow team also ended the season triumphant, with a 12.18-87 to 1.3-9 victory over Aspley.

The AFL action will continue at the Tigers in the off-season, with an AFL9s competition.

Rylee takes state title STORY NICK CROCKFORD RYLEE Smith added the Queensland State 12 Years 800m freestyle title to her growing swimming resume at the weekend.

The Redcliffe Leagues Swimming Club (RLSC) star won the short course crown in a hectic threeday program at Chandler Aquatic Centre.

Smith, who swam a total of 2.3kms in her races, was also runner-up in the 400m individual medley (IM) and third in both the 400m freestyle and 200m IM. Add to that fifth in the 100m IM and sixth places in both the 100m backstroke and 200m freestyle against swimmers from across the state.

RLSC’s Zaine Vardon (13 Years) had a disrupted preparation, after recent surgery, but swam two events and came away with two personal bests.

He also placed eighth in the 50m backstroke and 16th in 50m freestyle.

Club colleague Hilary Rika (13 Years) broke her previous pbs in both her sprint events, the 50m butterfly and 50m freestyle, finishing in 32nd and 37th positions.

The results were described as a “wonderful achievement” by the swimmers and head coach Wanda Drew after lockdowns and meets being cancelled or rescheduled.

With the short course season over, the long course begins after the school holidays.

RLSC’s Tuesday Evening

Personal bests and top 20 SOUTHERN Cross had three swimmers at the Queensland Short Course Championships – a number hit by the rescheduling of the meet and school holidays.

Zoe Wright competed in seven events recording personal bests (pb) and a top 20 finish in the breaststroke.

Alia De Leeuw qualified for three events and had one pb.

Amelie Hoefel qualified for five events and swam a pb while finishing in the top 20 for backstroke and breaststroke.

Competitors came from as far as Rockhampton and the Gold Coast.

Kyle’s motoring milestone .... off the track REDCLIFFE motor racer Kyle Evans has notched another milestone – he’s officially allowed to drive solo on public roads.

Having made his national debut at the Australian Formula Ford Championships this year, Kyle passed his probationary on-road driving test with flying colours this month.

It’s been a busy time for the ex-St Patrick’s College student, who has started work with dad Brett at the

family’s Clontarf EzyStone Benchtops and was second at the Warwick 1000 after a three month COVID-enforced sabbatical.

Evans says reaching 100 hours driving time before getting P-plates was easy, driving to and from school each day, but driving on public roads was different as he’s not allowed to reach the 230kmh on circuits.

“On the road you’re trying to get from A to B safely and on the track, you’re

trying to go the fastest you can,” he said.

“Being on the road is like driving in slow motion and I keep an eye on my speed.”

While his driving test at Redcliffe went without a hitch, Evans’ Formula Ford – Duratec powered Spectrum hit an oil spill at Warwick on turn one in qualifying. The car spun off but his crew repaired the damage. “I wasn’t expecting it. I hit the brakes and the car just looped in. I

let go of the wheel, hoping I didn’t hit the wall,” he said.

Kyle faces another break from Formula Ford with the Victorian Championship Round Five on September 24-26 and Formula Ford Festival at Winton Raceway on October 22-24 off due to the lockdown.

His next meetings will be the QRDC, Queensland Raceway on October 23 and Motorsport Australia State Championship Round 4 at Warwick, November 19-21. Kyle Evans with his red P plate

Keiler and Wilson bowled well without reward, but the former took a great catch and the latter had a hand in a run out with an excellent throw.

BNJCA finished by travelling to Nambour for two T20 games against Wide Bay. In the first Smith took two wickets for no runs and was on a hat-trick, while Keiler was unbeaten with the bat on 19 as BNJCA fell just one run short.

However, in the final T20 game, BNJCA beat Sunshine Coast with Keiler taking three wickets for two runs from three overs, Wilson 2-1 off two and Smith 1-2 from three with two maidens.

State call for Leagues six

THE Redcliffe Leagues Softball Association has six players named in the Queensland Open and Under 23 squads for the 2021/22 nationals.

Following the Open Men’s State titles, Jesse Barnes, Kevin Ray, Joshua Wagner and Michael Ludkin, a pick-up player from Gladstone, were named in the Patriots’ squad.

They are joined by Redcliffe’s Stephen Wagner as an assistant coach.

Jesse Barnes, Julian Scott-Davis and Callum Turner are in the Queensland Under 23 squad. More may be added after the Under 18 state titles. Dates for the Nationals are to be announced.

Doubling up for finale REDCLIFFE Leagues Hockey Club is celebrating two grand final wins and may have more.

The Under 13T2 Girls’ and Boys’ teams each won their finals – the Girls 2-0 with a late goal sealing the win, while the Boys won a shootout 5-3 after a 2-2.

Redcliffe’s Division Three Men were in the qualifier for their grand final at the weekend, but the Division Two Men lost their semi.

The Division Five Men, in their first season, went down 5-4 in their semi-final.

MATTY Anderson’s family has a long and proud history of playing Aussie Rules, so it seems fitting the Redcliffe Tigers Under 14 player was named the best and fairest for his team – and for the Under 14s in the South East Queensland Juniors league.

His grandmother’s uncle was Fitzroy legend Ted Whitten, and dad Barry lined up for the Swans when they were still South Melbourne in the process of making the move to Sydney.

THREE young Redcliffe City Cyclones cricketers have spent recent weeks hoping to get City Fever.

Phoebe Smith, Emily Keiler and Emily Wilson were in the Brisbane North Junior Cricket Association (BNJCA) squad for an Under 15 State Challenge.

They played trials against Brisbane East and Redland Shire (BEARS), Wide Bay and Sunshine Coast, earning praise for performances and their conduct.

Smith and Keiler have been named in the City Fever side, a combination of BNJCA and BEARS players selected by Queensland Cricket for the State Championships this summer.

In the first trial match, Smith took 3-17 from six overs and top scored with 29, Wilson 1-19 from five and Keiler 1-10 in the opening 40 over match which BEARS won.
