Taking fundraising to new heights STORY KYLIE KNIGHT JOEL Dulhunty is hoping to raise more than eyebrows as he cycles 500km in the lead-up to Redcliffe Hospital Giving Day on his penny farthing.

The Redcliffe Hospital Director of Research and Medical Education has completed about 170km of his ambitious fundraising marathon ahead of Giving Day on October 13.

“By the time Redcliffe Hospital Giving Day arrives, I will have ridden 50 times around Redcliffe Hospital and five times across the Ted Smout Memorial Bridge,” Dr Dulhunty said.

The inaugural fundraising day is a 24-hour appeal being held in partnership with Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital (RBWH) Foundation, to raise money for hospital-led health research, patient care programs, health education, innovative equipment and other initiatives.

Dr Dulhunty’s goal is to raise $50,000 for a senior researcher position, in addition to more than $10,000 raised earlier this year during his 2500km Big Ride for Research from Cairns to Brisbane.

“It’s a lot of fun. I think of it as a combination of a sports car and a big truck.

It’s pretty fast, when it gets going,” he said.

Fun-filled weekend for the family

STORY KYLIE KNIGHT REDCLIFFE KiteFest will return this weekend, with big kites and a big program of entertainment including small-screen superstars Bluey and Bingo, amusement rides and activities, aerobatics displays and much more.

Billed as the ultimate family weekend, the popular annual event is on September 11 and 12 from 9am-4pm at Clontarf’s Pelican Park.

Bluey and Bingo will appear on the Sesame Lane Main Stage at 11am and 1pm each day, headlining a quality program of children’s and musical entertainment.

The 2021 event will feature crowd favourites including the KiteFest Kidz Zone, KiteFest Karnival, Kite Flying Arena, Public Kite Flying Zone, Ocean/ Sky Zone, food, market stalls and more.

The new Challenge Zone will host free activities, demonstrations and workshops including drone games presented by Innovate Moreton Bay, slacklines by Oasis Performance Company and Parkour by Brisbane Parkour.

Redcliffe KiteFest is organised by Moreton Bay Region Industry and Tourism (MBRIT) and Kites Queensland in partnership with Moreton Bay Regional Council and Tourism and Events Queensland.

It will operate under a COVID-Safe plan, using QR codes and requiring guests to adhere to social distancing and Queensland Health mask requirements. Anyone who is unwell is urged to stay at home.

NatroShield is supporting the festival by providing bottles of hospital-grade disinfectant to the event organisers for free. These will be used to regularly clean surfaces across the festival site.

MBRIT Chairman Shane Newcombe said it was the ultimate family weekend, with activities, stage shows and thrills to excite all members of the family.

popular Bluey to this year’s p r o g r a m takes the event to new heights and we can’t wait,” Mr Newcombe said.

New format for Oz Day awards MORETON BAY’S Australia Day awards have been revamped to ensure everyone’s contributions are celebrated.

Featuring new categories and criteria, nominations for the 2022 Australia Day Awards are open until October 29.

Mayor Peter Flannery said it was appropriate to realign the program to reflect how people connected with the region.

“There will be a new format for the 2022 Awards, which will be streamlined to two awards − Citizen of the Year Award and the new Mayor’s Community Spirit Award,” Mayor Flannery said.

“The main award will remain a homage to the region’s exemplary citizens, while the spirit award will be open to people who live in and outside the region and those who aren’t an Australian citizen, which is a first for the program.”

Mayor Flannery said there were many people who travelled from outside the region to work or volunteer who also made significant contributions.

“These people are just as much a part of the fabric of our community and

Electric bus depot rolls in to North Lakes NORTH Lakes will be home to Queensland’s first 100 per cent electric bus depot as the State Government super-charges its plan to deliver more zero-emission vehicles.

The government will build 16 new electric buses under a $15.6 million deal with Keolis Downer.

In an Australian first, the all-electric bus depot, using 100 per cent renewable energy, will be based at Hornibrook Bus Lines at North Lakes once the buses are built on the Gold Coast.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said the deal would play an important part in the state’s COVID-19 economic recovery plan.

“This deal will see the largest rollout of electric buses in Queensland to date,” Mr Bailey said.

“The government has made a commitment that by 2025 every new urban bus we add to the fleet in SEQ will be zero-emissions, by 2030 we’ll roll that out to the rest of the urban fleet.

“This agreement gives us

a good head start because the first bus is due to arrive at Hornibrook’s North Lakes depot by the end of next year.”

Steven Miles said the deal was a win for commuters.

“Hornibrook Bus Lines runs bus services through our northern suburbs like North Lakes, Chermside, Mango Hill, Kallangur and

Sandgate, so I can’t wait to see these quieter and cleaner vehicles on our roads,” Mr Miles said.

“The investment to make the North Lakes depot fully electric and build these buses on the Gold Coast is expected to support 150 jobs over the next two years.

“It’s also expected to bring more than $17 million of estimated value into the economy for local suppliers and contractors, which is the kind of investment we need right now.”

Wave of support for surf club STORY JODIE POWELL

A DESIRE to give back to the community was the inspiration behind Linda and Linton Passmore joining the Redcliffe Surf Life Saving Club 15 years ago – but they never imagined they would reap so many rewards themselves.

Recently inducted as life members of the club, they spend every Saturday and Sunday during the surf lifesaving season dedicating their time to volunteering.

“Our kids had left home and both of us loved the beach and surf, so it was a natural progression to spend time helping the community,” Mr Passmore said.

Mrs Passmore runs patrols each weekend and serves as the club’s first aid officer.

“One of Linton and my joys is seeing young people coming through and getting them to enjoy and understand the water,” she said.

“We encourage young people, getting them out on the boards – apart from the fact that it gives them their good water safety skill set, which is what we need in Australia, they’re dealing with the public and that gives them a whole lot of skills for future life.

“They sometimes have to deal with situations that are confronting – we don’t

Council meetings on the move MORETON Bay Regional Council meetings will hit the road for the first time.

First stop on the regional tour is Samford on September 15, with residents invited to connect with councillors and senior Council staff at the Samford Community Hub. Mayor Peter Flannery said Community Council Meetings would eventually be held right across the region.

“It’s also a great opportunity for residents to address and debate things that matter to them most, as well as showcasing the uniqueness of each community,” he said.

Numbers will be limited due to COVID restrictions.

Mr Passmore flies drones with the club as part of Surf Life Saving Queensland’s shark management program and said no two days

were the same. As a duty officer, Mr Passmore spends his time taking command of assets, from the jet ski team to the rescue team.

“It’s the number of things you can do in a weekend.

Last season I volunteered in excess of 600 hours,” he said.

“As a member of the jet ski rescue team I’ve been patrolling up and down the Gold Coast, where the major-

ity of my rescues have been.

“It’s about being proactive and looking for people who look like they’re in trouble.

You’re learning and getting involved with people from many walks of life.”

Mr Passmore said surf lifesaving was a way of life.

“Seeing Nippers come in and then you see them grow...it’s really satisfying. You see the parents

involved in Nippers and the next thing you know they’re doing water safety.

“We’ve had families from Kingaroy and Capalaba – Redcliffe is a really big family club.”

This year’s season starts on September 18. To celebrate the club will officially open its clubhouse at noon.

Working together to end DV STORY JODIE POWELL WORKING together to end domestic and family violence will have a profoundly positive impact on the broader community and likely lead to a reduction in youth crime, a forum at Deception Bay PCYC has heard.

Organised by the Moreton Bay Crime Prevention Unit, the forum, held in conjunction with an expo, brought together community and support services across the region, earning praise from Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Council co-chair and former Queensland Police Commissioner Bob Atkinson.

Centre Against Domestic Abuse chief executive officer Holly Brennan told the forum living with domestic

violence had a profound effect on children.

“Young people who live with domestic violence are more likely to have anxiety and depression, more likely to experience mental health issues, more likely to use abusive sexual behaviour (and) more likely to become a victim of domestic violence or use domestic violence,” Ms Brennan said “If we listen to young people and ask them what they need and how we can support them, they will tell us.”

Ms Brennan said CADA believed one in three families experienced domestic violence or control.

“Last year, we saw about four percent of the Moreton Bay community and that’s just the tip of the iceberg – most people don’t come to a domestic abuse service.”

“If we do something about domestic violence, there will be 41 percent less homicides in our community – that’s one woman a week in Australia.”

Mr Atkinson said ending the cycle of domestic violence would take a whole of community approach.

“There’s no doubt that a child exposed to domestic violence is at greater risk in other areas (of their lives),” he said.

Mr Atkinson said if it was possible to change

community attitudes towards smoking cigarettes, drink-driving and wearing seatbelts, it was possible to alter the narrative around domestic and family violence.

“In 1973, there were 632 people killed in Queensland roads – the rate of road deaths was 32 for every 100,000 people … now it’s down to 5.5 per 100,000 people,” Mr Atkinson said.

“When I joined the police force in 1968 there were four things not talked

about: domestic violence; youth crime; suicide and mental health and child sex abuse.

“Domestic violence was regarded as private business – now we’re talking about it, not just ignoring it.”

He praised the Moreton Bay Region for taking a proactive stance on breaking the cycle of domestic abuse in a bid to reduce its impact on young people and said the event was an impressive show of com-

munity concern.

“In terms of integrated service delivery, if there’s a better example of that than here (at the forum) I would like to see it,” Mr Atkinson said.

“We have a long way to go.

It won’t happen overnight but I am confident we can get there.

“The result will be a far better society where children are able to reach their potential.”

“COVID was a really interesting time for us as a club, but since reopening (after lockdown last year), it really showed us that people aren’t travelling internationally, or at all, there’s a lot more people who want to have that experience but close to home.

“What we’ve found is a really localised market has come into play. There’s a lot more people coming to the club from the local area.”

He said food truck festivals held years ago were

really popular, and that had inspired the concept of offering different styles of cuisine in a new way “We thought, ‘can we provide that level of experience, but also make sure we can maintain that really high level of quality of food as well?’ It’s something we’ve wanted to do for the past 24 months and it’s grown from there.”

The Precinct will be open seven days for lunch from 11.30am-2pm; dinner from 5.30-9pm and all-day dining on weekends from 11.30am.

QUEENSLAND’S next mass vaccination centre will be at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre at Boondall, opening September 8.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the centre would open up to its first 1500 bookings, ramping up to 3000 a day as more vaccines become available.

CORRECTLY fitted child restraints and keeping your eye on children at all times around cars are the key to keeping kids safe on the roads, according to RACQ education specialist Louise Hart.

Ms Hart, who joined emergency services and other motoring-related organisations at a recent road safety display at Bunnings Rothwell, said RACQ staff often found child restraints needed adjustment when they offered free safety checks.

“We do car seat checks and give advice on anything to do with road safety,” Ms Hart said.

“When we do child restraints a large portion of the ones that come through need some kind of modification.”

Common issues include restraints installed with an incorrect recline, tight anchor straps and

“We make sure the child restraint is installed correctly and the child is in the right restraint for their age and height. We mostly make minor adjustments, whether it’s the harness height, or it’s too loose.”

Ms Hart said RACQ staff often found the top tether strap anchoring the restraint to the rear of a vehicle was too tight.

“It does need to have a little bit of movement to absorb the energy of a crash, or the restraint starts to lift off the seat and it’s not safe,” she said.

“But the vehicle seatbelt is supposed to be tight.”

“There are some really important pieces of

information in the manual – that and the vehicle manual together – like how many anchor points and where they are located.”

She urged parents to

walk around vehicles before they drove away to ensure children were not unexpectedly in a blind spot.

“Don’t rely on the reversing camera 100

percent. If you’re moving the car and you’re the only adult at home put the kids in the car to move it – you hear of kids who can open screen doors,” Ms Hart said.

Big plans for Dakabin STORY KYLIE KNIGHT THE Comiskey family has revealed plans for a $20 million hotel and retail development at Dakabin, which are presently being considered by Moreton Bay Regional Council.

If approved, Comiskey Group Director Rob Comiskey says construction could start mid next year, with the opening possible nine months later.

“It’s an exciting project for us. We’ve been look-

ing at it for 10 years and thought it would be a nice area for a project like this,” Mr Comiskey said.

The developer lodged a material change of use application with Council on August 17, after purchasing the site more than two months ago. At present, there is a house and sheds on the block.

The plans include a 2000sqm licensed hotel and shopping centre with a mix of retail and commercial tenants, including a bottle

shop. There would also be a service station and two drive-thru fast-food outlets. Mr Comiskey said the hotel would be the same quality as the Comiskey Group’s Sandstone Point and Eatons Hill Hotels, but smaller and with its own theme.

“We’re looking at designs.

It’s very different to the average pub, more upmarket,” he said.

Design elements include planter boxes off the roof, a fire fit in the centre of the

restaurant.

“It will feel more like an upmarket restaurant than a hotel,” he said.

Mr Comiskey expected to employ about 100 people in the hotel and said there would be about 200 jobs

across the entire development. He said there would be some exciting national tenants, who would changing their models and offer new experiences for customers. He would not reveal who they were.

“We’ve had an overwhelming response from tenants wanting to go in. It will look more like James St, than Dakabin,” he said.

He hopes the precinct will become a new meeting place for locals.

MORETON Bay police have increased patrols on trains in the region, with concerns raised by commuters that the rail network is not safe.

District Crime Prevention Co-ordinator Sergeant Sarah Grayson said statistics showed no rise in incidents around train stations, but police wanted to reassure people by boosting patrols.

“There was a survey done and public perception was that they didn’t feel safe, so police have increased patrols,” she said.

“But the perception is not always backed up by what the crime statistics are.

“We want people to have faith in Queensland Rail and the police that we’re dealing with issues as they arise.”

On a visit to Kippa-Ring Railway Station, officers spoke with commuters to give them tips about increasing their confidence in the safety of the rail network.

“People need to tune into their surroundings,” Sgt Grayson said.

“Be aware of what’s going on around you so you’re not an easy target if you’re zoned out to your surroundings.”

THE Deception Bay Community has created a touching tribute to Senior-Constable David Masters, who lost his life while on duty in June.

Library has craft all stitched up STORY JODIE POWELL A RESURGENCE in interest in all things handmade has inspired the latest “borrowable” offering at Redcliffe Library.

In a first for the region, three new sewing machines and an overlocker are available for people to use within the branch – although they cannot be taken home.

Redcliffe Library Branch Leader Margot Keane said the sewing machines, installed in June, had been popular with patrons.

“There’s a lot more interest in crafting and being more sustainable with your

clothing,” Ms Keane said.

“There’s a genuine interest in people wanting to create their own garments.

“It’s been something that’s been in the planning stages for quite a long time and we’ve had quite a lot of interest. There’s been a mix of people, from experienced sewers to raw beginners.”

The sewing studio is open for four-hour blocks and sewers can book a time within that window.

“We’ve had multiple people working at the same time and sharing their knowledge,” Ms Keane said.

Before patrons can book a

machine to use, they have to undergo an induction to ensure they are familiar with its programs and Ms Keane said the library hoped to introduce beginners’ classes soon.

“At the moment it’s only at Redcliffe, but we’re looking at ongoing sewing projects throughout the region,” she said.

The induction covers machine threading and the basics of the machines’ programs, sewing straight lines and using zig-zag stitching, as well as curved lines.

Classes, including making a tote bag, are already scheduled for the Sewing Studio.

Campaign calls for action STORY KYLIE KNIGHT THE 100-day campaign to reduce litter in Clontarf may be over, but the battle to solve the problem on a broader scale continues, with a report handed to elected representative calling for action.

Pristine Peninsula founder and co-ordinator Les Barkla and waste warriors Sue and Phil Johnson presented the report to State Member for Redcliffe Yvette D’Ath and councillors Karl Winchester (Div 6) and Sandra Ruck (Div 5) on August 26 and later to Federal Member for Petrie Luke Howarth.

“The 13 recommendations in this report is a callout for government to take priority action against serious litter issues, not

just at Clontarf but on the Redcliffe peninsula, throughout Queensland and around Australia,” Mr Barkla said.

During the 100-day campaign, volunteers collected 15,706 items, an average of 157 litter items dropped every day across the 12 audit sites.

Mr Barkla said this equated to 62,000 litter items each year in a 2km radius at Clontarf. The campaign resulted in a 45 per cent reduction in litter at the Snook St audit site, using awareness and education strategies.

Mr Barkla called on people to use litter bags in cars as well as containers to collect cigarette butts.

He said there were recommendations for all three levels of government

NETBALL facilities at Clontarf are poised for a major overhaul, with two projects in the pipeline to transform the KR Benson Park precinct.

The State Government has tipped in more than $900,000 to resurface nine netball courts at KR Benson Park, while Moreton Bay Regional Council will fund a $250,000 overhaul of the amenities building and carpark, with work expected to start this month.

Mayor Peter Flannery said the $13.8 million in state funding for 24 projects across the region was a remarkable commitment, with Council also securing funding for a new $3 million homelessness hub at Redcliffe.

“This is a remarkable initiative from the Government as an investment in our economy, our lifestyle and also in stepping up to address some of the social challenges we face,” he said.

Deputy Premier Steven Miles said the SEQ Community Stimulus Program was part of Queensland’s COVID-19 Economic Recovery Plan and the projects would make a positive impact on communities.

Mayor Flannery said councillors had unanimously approved the $251,245 upgrade of the amenities building next to the netball clubhouse.

Councillor Karl Winchester (Div 6) said the work had been scheduled to coincide with the end of the netball season. Construction starts this month and is estimated to take 12 weeks to complete.

The foundation empowers young people by providing resources, skills, education, and pathways needed to develop selfesteem and positive selfidentity, and resilience.

Susan and Chris, who were presented with their prize at Crusader Caravans Brisbane at Redcliffe, were dreaming of upgrading their caravan when they stumbled across the competition on the Crusader website.

“We love Crusaders but we were holding out for a

few years until we could afford one,” Susan said.

“We’d even rung them to check the weights and found we would need to upgrade our car first.”

Crusader ran the competition to raise awareness for the LifeChanger Foundation, with entrants asked to explain why the LifeChanger Foundation was worth supporting.

“I work in finance at a psychiatric hospital, so I really believe in the mental health industry – and LifeChanger is all about empowering and uplifting young people,” Susan said.

Lining up for a good cause STORY KYLIE KNIGHT STUDENTS will be taking aim at more than principal Troy Barath when Deception Bay North State School holds its Spring Fair on September 11.

Mr Barath has volunteered to take a barrage of paint-filled balloons and water-soaked sponges in just one of the fundraising initiatives planned for the day, and students are keen to hit the target of $4000.

Money raised will be added to $3000 raised by the school’s Christmas Fair last year to install one or two chilled water bottle filling stations in the school grounds.

With the onset of COVID, we have become acutely aware of how much more hygienic the water bottle filling stations would be,” Mr Barath said.

The Spring Fair is on from 10am-2pm and will include games and activities for the whole family, entertainment, a silent auction, raffles, stalls, and tasty treats.

One of the highlights will be Splat the Principal.

“I will be wearing a full suit and tie to get the full effect. I am wondering whether we will make more money from the students,

parents or teachers on the day,” Mr Barath said.

“The fair will be a chance for the community to come along and enjoy a day out.

We have missed out on so many things this year, but we can’t stop us celebrating together when we have the opportunity.

“The aim is more to have a fun day out for families, connect with each other and cement positive relationships more than to

make money,’’ he said.

“Community, connections and relationships are more important than dollars at the end of the day.

Come along, have some fun, connect with people and support the community.”

Games will include traditional balloon darts and softdrink bottle ring toss, a frisbee golf and water pistol challenge. There will also be face painting and

craft activities.

Mr Barath said stalls would include CDs, handmade crafts, a gift stall, a plant stall, cakes and a coffee van.

“The tuckshop will be open with a special menu including a sausage sizzle.

There will also be fresh strawberry sundaes being made with Wamuran strawberries, ice cream and fresh cream,” he said.

Mr Grady said swimming and gymnastics proved popular among Lego builders and there were even some video entries where children moved their athletes and filmed them.

As chaplain for both schools, Mr Grady said his role was more important than ever, checking in with parents, teachers and vulnerable students to see

if anyone needed a patient ear or more tangible help.

Mr Grady is a parent to two girls, one in Year 7 and one in Year 3, so can sympathise with the challenge of juggling working from home with home schooling.

When the community’s not in lockdown, he can be found organising Chappy Breakfasts and spending time with children who need a break from the classroom, filming interviews with teachers for Chappy TV, supporting parents, having

a milkshake with students who have done something awesome or organising community pantries.

“We can be the link between the community and the school and link organisations like Encircle, churches and Foodbank with schools,” he said.

Among his favourite activities is coaching school sporting teams and seeing the students improve their skills.

“I love coaching because I love kids growing in confidence,” he said.

INCOMING Redcliffe Peninsula Chamber of Commerce President Victor Nicholls is keen to build on the work of his predecessor, while reaching out to a more diverse range of businesses as the organisation continues to grow.

He replaces Brad Flynn, who will stay on as Vice-President and focus on the Moreton Maritime Alliance and maximising opportunities for the region ahead of the 2032 Brisbane Olympic Games.

“Firstly, I think Brad has done an amazing job to get it to where it is right now.

I think he’ll acknowledge he’s tired, you get tired in whatever role you’re doing and you need revitalisation,” Mr Nicholls said.

He does not have any major changes planned for the organisation, which has

grown to more than 230 members in recent years.

“I want to grow the membership and look at ways to strategically do that – understanding what our value is to businesses and different business sectors.

When you look at the type of businesses we have, most are service providers – they’re your accountants, bookkeepers and things like that,” Mr Nicholls said.

“There’s so many other businesses on the peninsula that could benefit from what we’re doing but we don’t know what they would see as valuable. I’m really interested in finding out what that is. In business, it’s all about talking to people with the right message at the right time.”

Mr Flynn said after about three years as President, it was time for someone else to come in with fresh ideas.

“I was very guarded about

who I wanted to take over, because I’ve put a lot of effort in, and Victor was a no-brainer for me,” he said.

“He’s just a breath of fresh air. Someone who’s a good business owner, who understands businesspeople, has commonsense, and he’s not in it for the ego.”

Mr Nicholls said the chamber’s role in educating, supporting and advocating for businesses on the peninsula was more important than ever as many faced challenges as a result of COVID-19.

“It’s critical. One of the things I asked at the end of

the last meeting was, ‘how is everyone going? How are businesses going and if you know of someone not going well, reach out to them, talk to them, get them along to a meeting. We’ve got smart people in the room, we can help’,” he said.

“Sometimes in organisations people look at the board or the people running it as the ones that do all the work. I think it needs to be different, I think they need to step up and reach out to other people and their peers asking them how they are going.

“That’s a big part of what

Mayor Peter Flannery said the move would help meet the current and future needs of Council staff

and the region and improve response times to requests, with a major works depot in the heart of the region.

“In less than 15 years, this region will have a greater population than Tasmania, and a greater demand for essential services,” Mayor Flannery said.

“To prepare for this growth we are consolidating our three old works depots at Petrie, Burpengary

we’ll be doing, helping people recover and driving that a bit more – that helping each other thing.”

Mr Nicholls and Mr Flynn said the chamber was well-positioned to serve its members and help them make the most of opportunities in the region, with four key factors: its good relationship with Moreton Bay Regional Council, Queensland’s strong economic and health position, the 2032 Brisbane Olympic Games and the Scarborough Harbour Masterplan.

ty through better business.

“If we have stronger businesses on the peninsula, we’re going to have a stronger community and everybody wins,” he said.

“Those things set the chamber up, the chamber is in a very strong financial position. This region has a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to really take this to the next level and it’s all lined up.”

“More than 320 staff will operate from this new facility, which will include greater storage, a fleet workshop and staff amenities for our asset maintenance crew.

“From upkeeping parks, to fixing potholes and cracked footpaths, and providing weed management, this team is out every day in every corner of the region.”

Mayor Flannery said the new facility would deliver a modern and sustainable space to create a safe and more productive working environment for staff.

Backed by band Bohemian Rhapsody, Crane’s new stage show covers some of British rock band Queen’s greatest hits.

For Crane, the return to the stage cannot come soon enough, with a series of concerts planned for southern states canned due to COVID-19 lockdowns.

Instead, he and wife Krystal have moved to Queensland, touring the state in their Mercedes Sprinter van – from which they ditched the dining table in favour of fitting in his prized drum kit, piano and

“I was just getting into Queen at that stage – I had Queen written on my denim jacket in black Texta,” Crane laughed.

“I didn’t know then that I would be playing Freddie’s songs on stage.

“I heard (of Mercury’s death) on

the radio and from that moment onwards I started rehearsing his songs.

“It seems like when he passed away, I took over.”

It was just a hobby – and Crane was playing his own songs in Australia after his family moved from Scotland when he was 14 – until he agreed to take the stage as Freddie at a friend’s 40th birthday.

“The club I did it at wanted me to come back and do an actual gig,” Crane explained.

His alter-ego took off after appearances on Australia’s Got Talent in 2011, where he impressed judges Molly Meldrum, Danni Minogue and Brian McFadden with his theatrical energy.

“My God, Freddie Mercury is

alive and well he would have been very proud of that vocal performance,” Meldrum said at the time.

“That’s the best Freddie Mercury impersonation I have seen – you rock,” was Minogue’s reaction, while McFadden said: “Thomas Crane is a great singer and an amazing showman”.

But the stage show he had created, complete with a carefully chosen band, skyrocketed after the release of the movie Queen – Bohemian Rhapsody in 2018.

Crane said the Redcliffe audience could expect a swag of their favourite songs, Mercury’s magnificent moves and plenty of banter when he and Bohemian Rhapsody performed.

Mr Wu said the festival celebrated three fundamental concepts: gathering, it’s believed that the moon is brightest and roundest on this day which means family reunion; thanksgiving, to give thanks for the harvest or for harmonious unions; praying, on the day people ask for conceptual or material satisfaction.

“Harvest Moon Festival is a great platform to unite diverse communities together, to learn from each other, to share their own culture and to work together as a team,” he said. “It is also a great platform for family reunion; enjoy a full fun day of entertainment."

There’s something special about the ‘never say die’ optimism of tourism events operators in our region and despite the many setbacks and uncertainties thrown their way through this pandemic, one thing has remained constant: They are unwavering in their determination to show you a great time!

I love that we’re starting spring with the most colourful celebration in South East Queensland, KiteFest! It’s the ultimate weekend for families, set to see a kaleidoscope of kites fill the skies over Pelican Park, bringing joy to everyone who witnesses this unique spectacle.

Now in its 26th year, KiteFest is an endearing part of Moreton Bay’s unique lifestyle and an important opportunity to showcase our region

to the thousands of people who flock to the Redcliffe peninsula for the aerial displays, amusement rides and stage shows.

Every year the festival continues to grow, and this year is no exception with none other than world-wide superstar Bluey set to headline the main stage program!

I invite everyone attending this event to make a weekend of it, to extend your stay and support our local businesses and tourism operators. We’re throwing open the doors to our special part of the world and welcome you to join the party.

Free Festival Shuttle Take the stress out of finding street parking with our FREE festival shuttle bus! All shuttle buses are pram and wheelchair friendly and will service a continuous loop between Kippa‑Ring Station, Redcliffe Showgrounds and the Redcliffe KiteFest precinct.

The festival shuttle bus will run frequently from 8:30am - 5:00pm in accordance with train times on both Saturday and Sunday.

Whilst we will have plenty of shuttles available, there may be waiting periods during peak times.

Accessibility At Redcliffe KiteFest, we want the whole family to enjoy our world-class event.

Several strategies have been implemented to create a more accessible Redcliffe KiteFest.

Wheelchair-Friendly Shuttle Service Our FREE festival shuttle bus service is pram and wheelchair friendly (more details on this service below).

Event site Access Wheelchair and pedestrian ramps have been installed throughout the event site in areas with limited access.

There will also be space available near the stage entertainment for wheelchairs and those with mobility vehicles.

Can I buy tickets at the gate?

Limited tickets will be available for purchase at the Redcliffe KiteFest entry gates. It is recommended that you purchase your tickets online at www.redcliffekitefest.com.au so that you don’t miss out!

Accessible parking Limited accessible parking will be available for permit holders near the main entry gate, accessible near the Pelican Park Visitor Information Centre along Hornibrook Esplanade. Please show traffic controllers your permit upon entry.

Can I bring my pet?

Unfortunately, Bluey and Bingo will be the only dogs allowed at Redcliffe KiteFest! We love pets, so it’s with a heavy heart that we sadly say no. Dogs and other pets are not permitted into the Redcliffe KiteFest precinct. Guide and assistance dogs, however, are welcome.

Parking RIDESHARE PICK-UP & Drop-off A dedicated pick-up/drop-off zone is located near the festival entry on Hornibrook Esplanade.

What essentials Should I pack?

This is a COVID‑Safe event. To protect our staff and other patrons, please ensure you observe and follow the guidelines set out by Queensland Health. Ensure you are regularly sanitising, washing your hands and social distancing where possible. Remember to stay home if you are feeling unwell. All patrons must sign in using the Check In QLD QR Code upon entry.

We highly recommend that the whole family bring a hat, some sunscreen, and a water bottle. Fill up your water bottle all day at our FREE hydration stations courtesy of Unity Water!

Nothing says spring quite like lamb – roasted, grilled, fried or wrapped in Lebanese bread with cherry tomatoes and haloumi. Yum!

1. Bring the lamb to room temperature before cooking, to help it cook quickly and more evenly. Season generously with sea salt and cracked pepper.

Redcliffe Garden Centre’s Sondra Grainger and Tylor Elmsley recommend planting herbs and vegetables now for summer before the heat arrives.

That means cucumbers, carrots, chillis, beans, corn, lettuces, zucchinis, watermelon, pumpkins, squash, strawberries, blueberries, most herbs and even citrus because many are flowering and starting to fruit.

“If you’re putting in new citrus, you can chop off most of the fruit and just keep a few select fruit that give you a better crop.

Especially if you’re planting it in the ground, you have to give

the plant time to grow before it starts producing fruit,” Mr Elmsley said.

“With the blueberries you can do the same thing but they’re such small fruit that as long as you’re putting fertiliser in the soil and keeping that up to them, they’ll be able to handle having that much fruit on them.”

Blueberries like a slightly acidic fertiliser, so you can use azalea, camelia, gardenia fertilisers or even just a fruit and citrus food.

Ms Grainger said if you were planting blueberries in pots, they needed an azalea/camelia potting mix.

“They do really well in pots, so if somebody wants to put a couple of pots in a full-sun spot on a balcony, they can. They’re great for the kids, the bees love them and they’re prolific

fruiters. These new ones that are coming through are perfect for our climate and they’re delicious,” she said.

The varieties available now will keep fruiting into summer, but you can mix and match them if you want fruit throughout the year.

Companion planting is a great way to deter pests and attract the insects your garden needs to flourish.

“It’s a very European way of gardening. The French call it a potager garden. They will actually put rows of flowers and herbs in amongst all their other edibles, so everything helps each other,” Ms Grainger said.

“You bring in the beneficial insects and you get much stronger, better crops without having to use poisons. It’s a very smart way of gardening but it

veggie gardens – just a little border of them, or spot-plant them among your herbs and veggies. "They will do wonderous things and they self-seed, so you’ll find them popping up everywhere which is great for your budget and great for the growth of the garden as well,” Ms Grainger said.

of year and it is a good time to plant petunias so you have a bouquet of colour in summer.

“They look amazing coming through for Christmas if you’re wanting to do decorative Christmas bowls. You can keep trimming them back and keeping them tidy and they’ll flower right through the summer months,” she said.

GERANIUMS are also good at keeping

pests away because of their strong fragrance.

“There are ones that smell like citronella, you’ve got rose geraniums, even the common ones can help with pest control too.

The citronella ones are good for keeping the mozzies away, apparently. When you brush against it, it will smell like citronella,” Ms Grainger said.

Spring is the ideal time to prepare soil and garden beds now for the warmer months.

“Compost, mulch, organic matter, digging beds over properly, weeding and getting beds ready to be planted out. It’s like painting, the stronger your preparation is, the better the results will be right through the season,” Ms Grainger said.

“Whether you live in a tiny apartment, a townhouse, or a sprawling yard, there is something beautiful you can put in your space for spring – even if it’s a little indoor garden, some beautiful shade-loving plants inside, massive flower hanging baskets on a balcony or a big sprawling garden bed full of herbs, veggies, edibles and flowers, there’s something for every gardener.

“It’s a great time to get kids in the garden too because they can plant things that are pretty, but also that they can pick and eat.

"That’s always tempting for children and it also gets them out, their hands in the dirt and understanding the process of growth. It’s beautiful time of year to be doing that.”

They are available in a huge range of colours, designs, weights and sizes, and compared to metals and hardbodies, are one of the most versatile lures available due to their ability to be fished at a huge range of speeds, depths and using a myriad of techniques.

Their versatility makes plastics suitable for a plethora of situations and is one of the reasons that they are so successful on such a large range of species. Everything from whiting to billfish have been caught on plastics with many species being deceived by a well-presented offering.

Plastics aren't just a hunk of plastic on a hook. Designed to display specific characteristics and emit distinctly different vibrations depending on their individual shape and design, the fins, corrugations, tails, etc on each lure are all contributing to the action, vibration and fish-attracting capabilities.

A commonly used phrase regarding plastics is, "You can't fish them too slowly".

A predator striking a plastic whilst it's at rest is extremely common.

Frustratingly slow, intermittent retrieves with long pauses are very successful on many species such as flathead, bream and even snapper, with the elasticity of plastics regularly seeing fish striking the lure multiple times if they miss, as opposed to metals and hardbodies which, if a strike fails to hook up, quite often the

fish immediately knows that what it's tried to eat isn't edible and won't try again. Predators will repeatedly bite and start to swallow a plastic after the initial strike.

The most important advice I can give when using a plastic is to make sure the hook is located dead centre in the body when you rig it up. This is absolutely critical to ensure it swims straight and true through the water, allowing its full action and vibration potential.

• School mackerel right around the peninsula off the jetties, rocky points and inshore reefs as well as the Pine River mouth and Ted Smout platform, and out in the bay off the beacons and reefs.

• Great flathead fishing in the Pine River, Hays Inlet, Clontarf foreshore and off Scarborough Spit.

• Summer whiting becoming more consistent. Try the beaches, rivers and creeks.

• Squire and snapper are firing well with some very nice fish up to 75cm off the rocks and inshore reefs around the peninsula as well as the reefs on both sides of Moreton with some good tuskies thrown into the mix.

• Yellowtail kingfish around the artificial reefs have been causing some havoc amongst a few anglers who've been undergunned for them.

Ask SNAPPER are one of the most iconic and best known Australian fish species. They are a member of the sparid family of fish which includes yellowfin bream and tarwhine.

They can be found along the Australian mainland from central Queensland south and around the mainland to Shark Bay in Western Australia. There are multiple stocks of snapper in Australian waters, and these can differ in terms of a range of factors including age and growth. Different populations of the same species also occur in the waters off New Zealand, Philippines, Indonesia, China, Taiwan and Japan. A further separate species, the “frying pan snapper” can be caught on reefs the length of the Queensland coast but is more abundant from central Queensland north at specific locations.

There are two distinct east coast stocks with an area of overlap in southern NSW around Eden. Queensland and most of NSW target a single stock but manage the same stock with different size and bag limits. Prior to 1993, the minimum legal size of snapper was 25cm and there was no recreational bag (in possession) limit in Queensland. In 1993, the minimum legal size for snapper was increased from 25-30cm and a recreational bag limit of 30 fish was introduced. In December 2002, the minimum legal size of snapper was further increased from 30-35cm and the bag limit

In 2011, the bag limit was further reduced to four fish per person (with only one fish being allowed to be greater than 70cm). A closed season was also introduced in recent years from July 15 to August 15.

Juvenile and adult snapper are common around the Redcliffe peninsula and can be caught by land-based anglers and those in kayaks and small boats around the shallow reef areas. In the offshore areas of Moreton Bay, it has been identified that snapper prefer “coffee rock” habitat with kelp present, but they are found in a range of habitat types. In Queensland waters, snapper can live up to 30 years but have been known to reach over 40 years of age elsewhere. All Queensland snapper greater than five years of age and 33cm total length are sexually mature; however, fish as small as 22cm fork length (two years of age) can be sexually mature.

Snapper do not undertake large-scale migrations. Most are resident in an area, but a small number can move large distances.

STORY KYLIE KNIGHT LEAGUE fans have cheered on the game’s best in two huge weekends of footy at Moreton Daily Stadium and there is more to come, with the Intrust Super Cup Grand Final on October 10.

The stadium has hosted the last two rounds of the NRL’s regular season, and two Dolphins’ home games in the past fortnight.

It has been a bonanza for footy fans, giving them a chance to see the league’s best up close. The players have also enjoyed the venue and crowds.

The action will continue on October 10, when Moreton Daily Stadium hosts the

Intrust Super Cup Grand Final. Kick-off will be at 3.10pm and will follow the Hastings Deering Colts Grand Final.

At this point, the Dolphins Intrust Super Cup side are fourth on the ladder after a 24-16 loss to Northern Pride on Sunday (make-up round 16). It follows a resounding 52-12 win against the Brisbane Tigers in round 19 on August 28.

The side will play a makeup round 17 game against Souths Logan Magpies on September 12 at Davies Park.

Round 18 was cancelled.

IT was a huge opportunity to secure second position on the ladder and play before the Bulldogs and Tigers at home at Moreton Daily Stadium.

After a classy performance against East Tigers last week, where we managed to pile on 52 points, we certainly wanted to back that performance up and continue to improve heading towards the finals.

Unfortunately, we were far too complacent against the eighthplaced Northern Pride and we were outplayed in most areas of the game. Right from the opening kick-off, Northern Pride turned up to play and really stuck it to us.

We failed to complete our sets, our kicking game was average and so was our defence.

It’s a big wake-up call, with our final game of the season this Sunday against South’s Logan.

A win could see us as high as second place pending other results and a loss would see us finish the season in fifth place and straight into elimination finals.

Philp was assistant to Moon at AJ Kelly Park from 2012-14. “It was mentor (Moon) and apprentice,” said Philp, Power’s head coach since mid-2016.

Moon went from Power to NPL club Lions and is now in his second season

as Roar’s head coach.

He believes the sides are evenly matched. “It’s absolutely a more level playing field. We get this every year, rounds while A-League clubs are still preparing for their season.

“NPL clubs have nothing to lose and can play with a degree of freedom.

“Lose and it’s an honourable defeat, they hold their heads high. But A-League clubs are expected to win.

We have to prepare and contend with that.”

Roar has gone beyond this round twice. Power reached it four years ago, losing to Melbourne City.

“We had a great experience in the cup in 2017,” Philp said.

“We’re not only representing ourselves, we’re representing the NPL and community clubs.

“We’re a community club and perhaps we can show that anyone can get there.”

On his battle with Moon, the Power coach said: “I’ve faced him many times and

he’d have the upper hand!

“I think the only game I’ve got up on him was in 2019 at Lions in the NPL (Power won 2-1). Warren is very good tactically. This will be a good chance to see where we’re at.”

Moon plans to watch Power again before the cup tie.

“Playing a local team is always good, so is playing at our home ground,” he said, “we’ve played Power before (Dolphins Community Shield), but this time there is something at stake.”

Clash pitches players against former club THE connections between Peninsula Power and Brisbane Roar run closer than each having home grounds in Kippa-Ring, just 1.6km apart.

Several players involved with the September 14 FFA Cup tie have been on the books of both clubs.

Power’s Hayden McHenery, Jesse Daley, Brenden White, Jake McLean and Sam Cronin (injured) all spent time at the Roar, whose Josh Brindell-South was at AJ Kelly Park.

For McHenery, at the Roar in 2017 with Daley, the FFA Cup tie will be his first time playing in the national Round of 32.

“When I heard the draw my first thought was ‘Oh, an A-League side’,” the 24-year-old said, “but then I thought perhaps this is a good time to face them.”

Roar returned to training, under strict COVID regulations at the start of August, ahead of their new A-League campaign.

Power were match fit and more than halfway through their NPL season before community sport had to follow the lockdown rules.

“We’ve got a few games to go in the NPL,” said McHenery, who was born in New Zealand, “but the FFA Cup tie is in the back of our minds.

“We want to get super fit for that. You have to be fit and have to be ready to run, because they (Roar) keep the ball so well.

“I watch a bit of the Roar, but I’m more a Wellington Phoenix fan actually!”

“I expect them to be fitter as we’ve just started building into our season. It’ll be close game.”

Brindell-South, who has played for McHenery’s favourites Wellington, was actually spotted at North

Pine Gorillas by current Power coach Aaron Philp.

“We lived just across the road (from the Marsden Rd ground),” Brindell-South said. “Aaron must have seen me play and was coach of Power’s youth team.

“He said did I want to join them – and I did.”

“Fantastic opportunity” says Power president POWER President Craig Feuerriegel said the national stages of the FFA Cup were a “fantastic opportunity to take community club, sponsors and players to a wider audience”.

toria around the match,” Feuerriegel said.

“We have a fantastic relationship with Brisbane Roar, who play their home games at Moreton Daily Stadium. However, come August 24 we will be opponents and as with any knockout game both teams will go for it!”

“I remember that the strategy was to go out hard.

I knew everyone was going to be wanting it, it was a Paralympic final,” Patterson said.

“I had put in the hard work and knew I was capable of getting that result.

“I was focusing on every lap and holding that pace.

“It was a tight finish and I’m pretty proud of the result.

“There was nothing left in the tank.”

BRENDEN HA LL BRENDEN Hall knew the younger pack was hot on his heels ahead of the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games but the four-time Paralympian still had goosebumps at the thought of representing Australia again.

The Mango Hill swimmer placed fourth in his pet event, the men’s 400m Freestyle S9 final, on day two of the Paralympics, finished in final place in the men’s 100m Backstroke S9 final on August 30 and was fifth in the men’s 100m butterfly S9 heat on September 2.

Hall had previously won gold in the men’s 400m Freestyle S9 final at London 2012 and in Rio 2016.

KIRRALEE HA YE S GENESIS Aquatics swimmer Kirralee Hayes has no doubt gained plenty of experience after her first Paralympics.

The 17-year-old finished fourth in the 50m freestyle S13 heat on August 29 in a time of 28.29 seconds. The heat was won by fellow Australian Katja Dedekind in a time of 27.44 seconds.

The heats were fast, with two Paralympic records set and the world record threatened at one stage.

He did it in a time of 1:16.97, finishing behind Colombian Carlos Serrano Zarate (1:12.01) and Russian Egor Efrosinin (1:16.43).

Despite no heats to calm the nerves or familiarise himself with COVID-19 processes, he challenged his higher-ranked rivals, taking an early lead, turning second at the 50m mark, and pushing Efrosinin all the way.

“I came here with a goal in mind. I wanted a 1:16:00 swim. I’ve only done that once in my career and that was in 2015,” Cochrane said from Tokyo.

“It was the most rewarding swim ever throughout my career to get that time and get that result after everything in the past two years.”

Cochrane, 30, has juggled swimming, work and being a dad.

“It’s the best intrinsic swim ever in my career,” he said. “That whole race happened so quickly for me, from walking out and having my name announced to when I hit the wall. The first thing I did was look to see the lights on the block, and I saw I came third. I took a moment to let that sink in.”

The former Southern Cross Catholic College student and Scarborough resident realised he had swum a perfect race and then looked at the time on the board.

“The photo was taken after I realised I had swum

1:16. I’d done it, I achieved the goal I set for that time.

The medal was a bonus.

“It was the second-fastest time I’d ever done in my career and it’s very rewarding to be able to do that, five years after recording that time.”

He said it was quite an achievement, given the “body’s a little bit older”.

When asked how Tokyo compared to his three previous Paralympic Games, Cochrane said he learnt after Rio not to compare Games and to take each for what they were.

“You have to feel the emotion and excitement of each one. I’ve really enjoyed Tokyo. You don’t mingle with other countries and there’s no big dining hall.”

“I feel closer to all the other swimmers within the Australian Paralympic Team than I have at any other Games and it’s be-

cause we’ve been in our own bubble,” he said.

He heard teammate Col Pearse call out “Go Blakey” as the stands fell silent just before the race.

“The Australian guys have a proud tradition of being one of the loudest groups in the stands,” Cochrane said.

After two weeks’ hotel quarantine, Cochrane will be eager to get home to his family, but he’s looking forward to a couple of days to himself before he returns to work as an exercise physiologist at the University of the Sunshine Coast.

“At this stage, I’m fully committed to going to the Commonwealth Games and World Championships next year.”

He’s has found a new balance with family life, work and swimming that works.

JANINE Watson has made history at the Tokyo Paralympics, bringing home Australia’s first medal in Para Taekwondo, making its debut in Japan.

Watson dominated her bronze medal bout, scoring 26 points from 12 body kicks in the first round and gaining two points when gam-jeoms were declared

against the Ukraine’s Yulia Lypetska.

A gam-jeom is declared when an athlete punches to the face, or punches or kicks below the waist.

In round two, Watson earnt 21 points – 20 with body kicks and another from a Lypetska gam-jeom.

Watson sealed the match in the final round with eight

body kicks for a final score of 63 to Lypetska’s zero.

The medal win followed Watson’s 20-point domination of Japan’s Shoko Ota in the Women’s K44+58kg semi-final.

Watson, who has multiple sclerosis, made the semi-final after a blistering win against Turkey’s Seyma Nur Emeksiz Bacaksiz.

Redcliffe State High blitz the field REDCLIFFE State High School’s senior rugby team had a blistering grand final win over Clairvaux McKillop in the Gee Shield last week.

The school’s Rugby League Director, Scott Murray, said the team had performed strongly all season, but saved the best for the final match of the year, holding Clairvaux McKillop scoreless and ending

the game with 46 points on the board.

“We were confident going into the game, but we certainly didn’t think it was going to open up like that,” Murray said.

With a mix of Year 11 and 12 students in the team, Murray said their experience playing together over several years showed.

“Those boys in Year 12 had some really good com-

binations,” Murray said.

He said the team showed great maturity dealing with pressure when the first half ended with the score at 24-0.

“We tried to keep a lid on it without getting complacent.

“To the boys’ credit, they managed it pretty well.”

Sixteen mixed teams have, at the time of writing, registered for the venue’s summer season, which kicks-off on September 21.

Bek Robertson, Redcliffe’s venue manager, said she was “happy with the numbers”.

“We’re starting from scratch with mixed teams and I haven’t done much promotion yet,” she said, “I was only aiming for 12 teams.”

Redcliffe Oztag fixtures will be at the Ray Crawley Fields, Clontarf, on Tuesday evenings through to December.

Moves were made to launch Oztag in Redcliffe around eight years ago, but it did not take off.

However, North Lakes did.

Ms Robertson is launching Redcliffe after the success of North Lakes Oztag, at Woodside, which she also manages and is “maxed out”.

“It’s going crazy at the moment trying to catch up with this season after the lockdown and (State of) Origin nights,” she said.

“We’ll have a week off after North Lakes ends and then into the summer season.”

The aim of Oztag, which was invented in 1992, is to get a tag on the side of your opponent’s shorts to stop them scoring.

REDCLIFFE’S Kyle Evans ended his first foray back on the racetrack in three months in fine form, finishing in second place behind rival Cameron McLeod.

It was a hard-earnt result in the three-day Warwick 1000, after Evans hit an oil spill on turn one of the track in a qualifying round.

Evans’ Formula Ford – Duratec powered Spectrum launched into the ripple strip and spun off the track, resulting in extensive damage.

His crew worked their magic to get him back on the track for Race 1, where he finished in second place, retaining that position at the end of Race 2.

STORY KYLIE KNIGHT WHEN Lakeisha Patterson touched the wall at the end of women’s 400m freestyle S9 final in Tokyo and turned to see the light on her block, she knew the five years of hard work leading up to that moment had been worth it.

She won gold, but didn’t

know it for certain until she saw the light go on.

The 22-year-old from Caboolture went hard from the start and hit the front within the first 25m.

But her lead, more than two metres as times, was whittled down to just a few centimetres

by Hungarian Zsofia Konkoly entering the final 20m.
