MB100 boost for region STORY NICK CROCKFORD THE Moreton Bay 100 is back bringing cyclists, visitors, fundraising and a business boost to our region.

After missing last year, Moreton Bay Cycling Club (MBCC) will hold the 2021 event on Sunday, November 14 (December 12 is a backup).

It is open to all ages, with a 20km ride for families and held on cycleways.

There were 500 entries for the 2019 MB100.

Registrations will open soon on the moretonbay100.com.au website.

All rides start at Woody Point, then take routes which include the foreshore at Deception Bay, Redcliffe, Sandgate and out to Bunya, Dayboro, Mt Mee and D’Aguilar.

“It is a community-focused event where we try and work with local businesses and promote one another in the community,” MBCC Event Organiser Tony Williams said.

“It is about bringing people into the Moreton Bay Region to enjoy the pristine riding conditions and scenery.”

Bid for school at golf course STORY NICK CROCKFORD RESIDENTS in Mango Hill and North Lakes are preparing to challenge plans for a new independent school on former North Lakes golf course land.

The Village Development Group (TVDG) has outlined proposals for a school on eight hectares at the southern end of the former golf course site.

TVRG said a number of independent education organisations had “expressed interest in establishing a

new school” on the site to meet future demand.

In a media release, TVRG said the land was zoned for sport and recreation but education “is an allowable use under the planning scheme on that site”.

Two years ago, TVRG also announced plans for a retirement village on the site – a move being contested by the Save North Lakes Golf Course (SNLGC) group.

Andrew Cathcart, from SNLGC, told last week’s Mango Hill Progress Association (MHPA) meeting the proposal had “a lot of

people concerned”.

“We have been inundated with emails, my phone has gone ballistic,” he said.

President Laurence Christie said MHPA “fully supports the aims of the SNLGC representing North Lakes residents in their efforts to retain a quality of life that will be destroyed if commercial or educational structures are permitted in the centre of an existing compact residential community”.

The association last week passed a resolution “requesting each of our local,

state and federal representatives to do whatever is necessary to retain and enforce the Mango Hill Infrastructure Development and Control Plan”.

Mr Christie said MHPA “strongly believes” State Planning Minister Steven Miles must deny any application on the grounds such a facility “is not essential on that parcel of land”.

TVRG will seek State Government approval for the school, between Endeavour Blvd and Diamond Jubilee Way, through Ministerial Infrastructure Designa-

tion. The decision would be made by Deputy Premier Steven Miles, Minister for State Development, Infrastructure, Local Government and Planning, who said he was “not currently considering” or had any discussions on the school proposal.

Council and residents will be asked for feedback later in the process, but the Minister will make the final decision.

Swanning around the lake with Lyn STORY KYLIE KNIGHT AS Lyn Fletcher approaches the edge of Lake Eden, two adult swans and their three cygnets swim over.

They seem to know her and her camera.

The North Lakes resident has been photographing their progress since the adults arrived in February, was there to capture the moment when the cygnets hatched and has followed their journey in the three weeks since.

It is a pattern she knows well, having documented a similar story involving two different swans and their seven chicks last year, sharing her stunning images on the North Lakes Community Facebook page at every milestone.

Her photographs and clever captions always draw an enthusiastic response from fellow residents who share her passion for the animals that call Lake Eden home.

Mrs Fletcher, her husband Mark and their children migrated to North Lakes from South Africa about 17 years ago and say they will never leave.

lake. We’ve loved it. We’ll never move from here,” Mrs Fletcher said.

“We’ve spent thousands of hours down here. It’s beautiful to walk here, you meet so many people. It’s just great, especially if you love taking photos as well.”

Her passion for taking photos, particularly of wildlife goes back to childhood. “I think I got my first little camera, when I was about eight,” she said.

“I loved taking photos.

I’ve always loved animals and birds. I looked after

aviaries at school and just really loved all of nature.

I’m self-taught, so it really is just a hobby.

“I don’t go anywhere without a camera. I think it makes you look at the world differently, when you take lots of photos.”

Being able to share her work with the broader North Lakes community via its Facebook page has brought Mrs Fletcher as much joy as it has to those who have enjoyed her work.

She said the lake and its inhabitants were a drawcard

for residents and visitors, particularly on weekends.

“It brings the whole community to the lake. When the babies are born, the lake is teeming with people and everybody is down and wants to get pictures.

They’ve become actually quite famous,” she said.

“The last seven were so famous. People would leave for work early and get down here before they took the kids to school, they had to come down to the lake.

Those seven would take a walk through town and

people would herd them back with branches and say ‘go back to the lake’.”

Mrs Fletcher said all seven survived and were at the lake for about 10 months before they learnt to fly and flew away. The newcomers have not been quite as lucky, with just three of the five cygnets remaining.

She suspects one was taken by an eel. The other was attacked by an eel and is recovering at Australia Zoo. “It will join three others called the Gucci gang that lost their mum,’’ she said.

Queensland businesses can now apply for the State Government’s COVID-19 Business Support grants. Employment and Small Business Minister Di Farmer said the program would help small and medium businesses affected by recent lockdowns. Applications will be open for three months.

STORY KYLIE KNIGHT KITEFLYERS will be smiling as much as the spectators at this year’s Redcliffe KiteFest as they relish the chance to share what they love with people of all ages.

Kites Queensland member Mick Crowley will be among the large contingent from the club making sure the sky above Pelican Park at Clontarf is filled with colour on September 11 and 12.

Mr Crowley has been part of the club, formerly Redcliffe Kite Club, for about seven years and served as president for five years.

“I’ve always had an interest in kites, since I was a kid.

I put it aside for some time and picked it up again and thought it was fun,” he said.

Joining the club was a way to seek out like-minded people after he started flying kites again in his mid-30s with his children. While their interest in the pastime has waned, his has intensified.

“It’s a good way to spend the weekends and get out into the fresh air, testing your skills … two-line and four-line kites require dexterity and movement,” Mr Crowley said.

He has flown freestyle stunt kites, doing slackline tricks, and has been involved in team formation flying. These days he enjoys flying single-line kites, particularly the big ones including the whale,

crocodile and alien riding a spaceship.

He said he enjoyed pushing the limits, even flying kites from the back of boats.

“They look fantastic no matter where they are,” he said.

“It’s an all ages, all abilities pastime. You can make kites, design them and fly to whatever capability you have.”

Kites Queensland has about 40 members in the Moreton Bay Region, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast and even Hervey Bay. “It’s been a busy year,

so it will be a nice chance to catch up with everyone and get out on the field enjoying ourselves and doing what we love,” he said.

The big kites will return and Mr Cowley hopes there will be three new ones flying over Pelican Park including a blue dog, a dolphin and a 30m octopus.

The festival is also a chance to bring your own single-line kite, get some tips from the experts and add your own colour to the sky in the public kite-flying zones.

Redcliffe KiteFest is on September 11 and 12 from 9am-4pm.

Kites are a huge drawcard for the event, as will be the Bluey and Bingo Live Experience stage shows, other live entertainment, free activities and workshops, aerobatic displays, amusement rides, action in the KiteFest Challenge Zone including drone games, market stalls and much more.

Motorists warned to lock it or lose it STORY JODIE POWELL MOTORISTS are being urged to lock their vehicles and remove any valuables when they park them, with more than 50 reports of thefts from vehicles across the Moreton Bay Region already this month.

Police have launched Operation Tango Dartmouth in a bid to prevent more thefts and catch the offenders.

District Crime Prevention Co-ordinator Sergeant Sarah Grayson said most of the reported thefts were opportunistic offences, with thieves walking the streets testing door handles to find unlocked vehicles.

“You can assist in preventing these types of crime – if you are in the habit of not locking your car, try setting an alarm to remind you each night to

check that you have done so,” she said.

“Your insurance could possibly be void if you’ve left your car unlocked.”

Recent patrols of public carparks – including Kippa-Ring train station, have found vehicles with valuables such as driver licences, passports, cameras, cash, laptops and keys with addresses attached in full view.

Acting Superintendent Paul Ready said he believed many residents were not taking vehicle security seriously.

“Police are concerned that people are not locking their cars and removing their valuables,” Acting Superintendent Ready said.

“This is a simple way to ensure that you do not fall victim to this type of offence.”

Youth programs a winner for surf club STORY JODIE POWELL REDCLIFFE Surf Life Saving Club’s innovative junior programs have been recognised at the Surf Life Saving Sunshine Coast awards of excellence.

The programs earnt the club the title Junior and Youth Development Club of the Year for 2020-21.

President Terry Lowe was also honoured at the awards, receiving the Clive Hammond Medal for his outstanding contribution to the development of the club.

Mr Lowe said the awards were a wonderful achievement because Redcliffe was one of the smallest clubs in the Surf Live Saving Sunshine Coast region.

“We had 350 Nippers this year, which was our biggest ever, and it was very unexpected because we were going through the redevelopment of the clubhouse,” he said.

Mr Lowe said COVID-19 restrictions contributed to the surge in Nipper numbers, with many other sports locked down.

youth development officer, did a terrific job.”

Mr Lowe said the club was particularly proud of its Stingray program, with two cadets mentoring each participant each week.

“Stingrays is for children with a disability, which

kids to come back next year.”

Mr Lowe said he was honoured to be awarded the Clive Hammond Medal and was stunned when it was announced at the awards ceremony.

There is usually an interview process for those being considered for the Medal, but two committee members gave the interview on Mr Lowe’s behalf.

“I didn’t even know I was nominated, so it was a huge surprise,” he said.

That’s the simple message from Moreton Bay Region Inspector Lee Jeffries as he launched the seventh annual Road Safety Week last week.

Joining local police for the launch were the SES, Queensland Fire Service officers, local Ambulance paramedics and Main Roads staff.

Inspector Jeffries said the state’s road toll so far this year was alarming at the start of Road Safety Week, with 174 people killed – 20 more than at the same time last year, and 49 more than in 2019. In the Moreton Bay Region, 13 people have died – equal to the number of deaths at the same time in 2020, but double the number who had died at the same time in 2019.

“While the Fatal Five are always primary consider-

More than one in four riders and drivers who die on Australian roads have a blood alcohol content exceeding the legal limit, with drug use increasing the risk of a crash.

Speeding just 5km/h over the limit in urban areas and 10km/h over the limit in rural areas doubles the risk of a crash and people not wearing seatbelts are eight times more likely to die in an accident.

As part of Queensland Road Safety Week, people were encouraged to “sign up for road safety” by sharing safety messages by making a sign, taking a photo and sharing it through social media us-

Inspector Jeffries said the over-representation of young people in the Moreton Bay Region’s fatalities and road trauma was tragic.

“It’s multiple factors – we have had three crashes where

multiple people in the same vehicle have been killed. Two of those crashes resulted in the deaths of four persons in their 20s and late teens.”

Inspector Jeffries said there were far-reaching impacts right across the community, starting with the families of

those involved and reaching emergency services personnel and hospital staff.

“My single message is drive safely, drive to the conditions and your own capabilities because your life and everybody else’s depends on it.”

Making music’s soul good STORY KYLIE KNIGHT WHEN work in the music industry dried up last year due to COVID-19, fate and a musician with special needs intervened and put Dan Nebe on a path of fulfilment and business success.

That business, Musicare, was born in March 2020 as the pandemic started to bite and Mr Nebe lost all his work and 95 per cent of his income.

It started when musician Ky Lovell’s mother asked if Mr Nebe could mentor her son, 19, for a few hours a week. So, they set up a three-hour jam session every Wednesday.

“It’s something I’ve always been interested in doing. I thought, now is the time,” he explained.

Mr Lovell plays keyboard, guitar (bass and lead) and drums. “He’s always been a musician, since he was a kid … always had to make a beat,” Mr Nebe said.

Mr Lovell is completing a university course and also works with Busby Marou’s drummer Damon Joel.

Since he has been coming to Mr Nebe’s studio, his playing ability has improved, his confidence has grown and he has newfound energy.

He performed his first show at Noosa Awakening in June.

“He wakes up at 4am and everything is music until he passes out at night,” Mr Nebe said.

A dedicated COVID-19 vaccination clinic for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities has opened at Redcliffe Hospital.

Health Minister and State Member for Redcliffe Yvette D’Ath opened the clinic when she launched the Make the Choice campaign on Saturday, which aims to boost vaccination rates in Indigenous communities.

The Redcliffe clinic will be based at the Moreton Bay Integrated Care Centre on the Redcliffe Hospital campus.

The clinic, open to walkins, will operate between 10am and 2.30pm on August 28 and September 4, 11, 18 and 25. Indigenous Health Liaison Officers will present to assist.

He said the growing business now supported two full-time positions and three casuals.

“I’m using that 35 years of touring and that knowledge,” Mr Nebe said.

He said music was proven to activate parts of the brain, improve mood and boost energy levels.

His team works with clients who have disabilities, mental health issues and those simply wanting to learn more about the industry. These include Year 12 students looking to get a jumpstart on music degrees.

“I have people from 6-60 years and none are the same and every program is different,” he said.

They generally do 10-session blocks, but most continue on once they see the benefits.

Mr Nebe will write a song with them, record it and make a music video they can share on Youtube.

“It gives them something to show for it and it gives them confidence,” he said.

“They pick the theme of the song, the keywords …

it’s a way they can express themselves. I help them write the lyrics and we go into the studio. They’re pushing the knobs up for the levels at their capacity.”

He ran a songwriting workshop with the SuperJesus’ Sarah McLeod in May and will run another with The Church and Powderfin-

ger’s Ian Haug on August 26.

There is a workshop planned in October, with the musician to be announced. He said it was a rare opportunity to call on his friends in the business to mentor his clients.

The program gives clients confidence and a sense of worth, and is an outlet for

those who need to redivert energy and feelings. Musical inspiration ranges from The Wiggles to Frozen, ACDA and Korn.

“I feel like they’re giving me therapy. I pinch myself every day when I come to work just seeing their faces when they create and complete something,” Mr Nebe said.

The owners are alleged to have committed offences under the Animal Management (Cats and Dogs) Act and Moreton Bay Regional Council Local Law No. 2

A council officer told last week’s Council meeting in some instances dogs were being walked without leashes and in others they were being walked by a child.

In the first matter, which happened on October 20, the owner faces charges of failing to maintain a proper enclosure and prevent an animal from wandering, as

well as failing to ensure a dog does not attack another animal causing death.

Mayor Flannery said council was committed to encouraging responsible pet ownership through its ‘Pets in Public Spaces’ Education Program.

“TMR is installing new traffic lights and providing priority access for the Redcliffe Queensland Ambulance Service facility on Sydney St,” Ms D’Ath said.

Service a time to remember fathers FAMILIES will have the opportunity to pay tribute to fathers who have passed away at a special memorial service at the Great Northern Garden of Remembrance.

Manager Rita-Marie Lenton said the Father’s Day Memorial Service gave people the opportunity to reflect on the lives of their loved ones.

She said while the service was held in the lead-up to Father’s Day, it was not just for people who had lost fathers.

“It’s not just for people who have been cremated at Great Northern Garden of Remembrance, it’s for anyone who’s missing their dad on Father’s Day,” she said.

“Sometimes we have husbands who have lost their wife and are struggling because they have children, and we have fathers who have lost babies.

“It’s not just about fathers, it’s about people who have lost their loved ones.”

The service, which has been offered for a number of years, begins with piper Joe McGee and the lighting of candles, is conducted by celebrant Dean Aitken, who reads the names of people who are being remembered on the day.

Spike in demand for veteran assistance STORY KYLIE KNIGHT THE loss of Afghanistan to the Taliban in the past fortnight has resulted in a spike in demand for support services from veterans, but help is available 24 hours a day.

Redcliffe RSL Veterans Welfare and Pensions Advocate Rosemary Mountford said some veterans were disengaged, others were anxious and some were thinking ‘it’s hap-

pened, move on’. There were also veterans who had not recognised they had underlying mental health issues, which had now bubbled to the surface.

“It’s affected everyone in different ways. You have to be prepared for the whole range of emotions,” Ms Mountford said.

“I don’t think the full cascade has hit yet. They don’t understand the full ramifications of what’s happening. Some of them have personal relationships

with some of the Afghan people and we’re waiting to see what is going happen with those fellows.”

She said a number of organisations were assisting veterans, as well as RSL Sub-Branch Welfare and Pensions Advocates.

“We’re making ourselves available to listen to their stories and to find out what they need,” she said.

The Redcliffe RSL team is referring many to Open Arms, Soldier On and Overwatch Australia.

“There are some that we are taking on because they’re long-term clients and they relate to us,” she said. “It is important that they have those resources to reach out to because we can’t be here 24 hours a day.

If anyone needs to drop in and have a chat, we have time available. Anyone who needs someone to sit with them in the evenings, we have a couple of volunteers doing that at the moment.”

Ms Mountford said the team was working with

more than 100 Afghanistan War veterans.

“We have a lot of young veterans who come through here. Not just men, women too,” she said.

People worried about their loved ones can contact Redcliffe RSL during the day and Open Arms and Overwatch at night.

Her advice to veterans, “Remember your mates and keep in contact with each other because peer support is the most relevant thing at the moment”.

Diggers made a difference in Afghanistan OPINION PAUL CLARKE

THE images and reports coming out of Afghanistan are heart breaking. There are no easy answers or quick fixes for such a terrible human tragedy.

Historians will debate whether the decision to go into Afghanistan was an ethical one, and I’m not concerned if politicians go down in infamy for their decisions in this regard. I do hope we do all in our power, now, to rescue as many as we can who are in danger.

Perhaps the more important question that we are all left asking is whether the work and sacrifice of our defence force personal was worth it, and I believe the answer is an emphatic ‘absolutely’.

The geopolitical machinations are for others to debate, but the work on the ground of our soldiers has definitely made a difference. They have given a whole generation of Afghans a different life − a taste of freedom, equality, education and opportunity – a different vision of reality. For every female that went to school, every male that was able to think differently, it was worth it. Even though Taliban rule returns, our defence force personnel have made a difference to a whole generation, and that is hugely significant.

Now there is a generation of Afghans who have a different vision of their future, spread out all across their country and across the world. While the Taliban might rush back to power, that generation is going to bring in a different future for their people. Quietly, internally, externally, peacefully, inexorably, inevitably: it will be that generation, and not the West, that redefines and rewrites Afghanistan’s future.

In other words, the thing that will transform their nation is not that we taught their young men to fight, but that we taught their young woman to read, and this potent generation has been built and educated on the blood, sweat and tears of our soldiers.

I’m praying the Taliban have enough self-interest to realise that a stable, peaceful transition, and an employed, unafraid population will give them more status globally.

We had to remove ourselves from this terrible situation at one point, it was never going to end well. But the work on the ground of our defence personnel has created a generation that can transform their nation.

Magical display for Book Week STORY KYLIE KNIGHT IN WHAT could be described as an act of wizardry, a spell has been cast over Clontarf Beach State School’s main office transforming it into something straight from a Harry Potter novel.

It is not the work of Professor Dumbledore, instead two lesser-known wizards Sheryl Foster and Jill Burden have spent 12 months researching, creating and sourcing objects for the display.

They put it all together in six hours on July 31, before South East Queensland was plunged into lockdown and so it would be waiting for pupils when they returned.

The display includes quidditch goals and broomsticks, a Mirror of Erised, paper mache

mandrakes, flags for the four Hogwarts School of Witchcraft houses, potions, Quibbler front pages and much more.

It was ahead of Book Week and is the fifth display of its kind inspired by stories children and their parents love.

The crafty pair has created magic in the office for Book Week for five years, with the help of other staff at the school keen to join in the fun.

It all started with some friendly rivalry with the former librarian, who was creating displays in the library.

So far, Ms Foster and Burden have decorated the office with themes including Alice in Wonderland, Winnie the Pooh, The Wizard of Oz and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Ms Foster said it was her

favourite week of the year and as administration officers, greeting visitors and pupils, costumes were essential.

“It’s for the kids. The best part of it is when they come in and they’re excited and they look around. We get into it as well. We love a bit of dress-up,” she said.

“This year’s display is on a par with what we have done in the past couple of years.”

Ms Burden said on last year’s Book Week dress-up day, 90 per cent of pupils and teachers came to school in costume.

The display will remain in place for a month and the pair is already working on a plan for next year, although they will not reveal what it is.

If their efforts of the past five years are anything to go by, it will be spectacular.

BOOKWORMS at Hercules Road State School are pursuing their love of literature with innovative storytime sessions led by librarian Kellie Judd.

Mrs Judd introduced live storytime on Sundays through the school’s Facebook page about two years ago, but they really came to the fore when COVID-19 lockdowns hit.

TUNE INTO STORYTIME The Sunday sessions are on the Hercules Road State School Facebook page at 6.30pm.

“During lockdown periods I began doing them each weekday as a way of maintaining a connection between the students learning at home and school,” Mrs Judd explained.

“Some of our teachers

also tune in at the same time to listen with the students of essential workers who are here at school.”

The sessions are popular with the school community, with younger siblings tuning in too, Mrs Judd said.

“Funny stories are the most popular with most kids and definitely fun to read as well,” she said.

“For the middle years and up the most popular books

are Graphic Novels and the range and availability of these has greatly increased.

“There has also been a noticeable increase in books with female characters, which is so important for all readers to have characters they can identify with while reading.”

Mrs Judd sometimes chooses books that are related to upcoming events, but said she mainly se-

lected material she knew students and their parents would enjoy.

“I now have kids coming to make suggestions for the Sunday Storytime – they bring me one from the shelf that they would like to hear, which I love.”

A librarian for the past five years, Mrs Judd said the role gave her the chance to interact with every student in the school each week.

United in love for community

LIONS roar

STORY KYLIE KNIGHT A COUPLE that serves the community together, stays together – at least that is the case for Bruce and Diane Unwin who have been married for 49 years and in Lions together for 16 years.

Their Lions journey started when Mr Unwin joined in 1999 while they were living in Dalby and he was the manager of the local bank branch.

The owner of a menswear store in town asked him to come along to a meeting and he decided it would be a good way to meet people.

“It was something to get out of the house and a way to do community work,” Mr Unwin said. “In the first year, I became treasurer and never looked back.”

About six years later, many women in Dalby were becoming members, so Mrs Unwin took the plunge.

“It was nice to join too because all the ladies my age were joining, so it was a good time to join the club,” she said.

The couple joined North Lakes Lions Club, when they moved to the suburb in 2011.

They have been involved in many activities, projects and programs since then.

PAUL Krause’s tale of survival goes back to the day he was born in a Nazi forced labour camp and continues to this day as he battles significant health challenges, but he says his positive outlook and balance lifestyle have kept him alive.

Sad farewell for King of Peacocks

ELVIS the peacock has left the street, Crawford Street, for the last time much to the distress of many residents.

According to resident Tracey James, the popular member of the community was chased by a dog and subsequently hit by a car earlier this month.

She heard the news from a neighbour who told her another resident took him to a vet at North Lakes for emergency treatment. Elvis was then taken to the RSPCA at Wacol.

When Ms James called the RSPCA, a couple of days later, she was told a dog bite had become infected, Elvis’ leg was broken and he had to be euthanised.

She shared the news with the Redcliffe community on August 6 and said there was a touching outpouring of emotion on Facebook.

Residents shared their photos and memories of a bird who had connected with people in the area for many years.

Ms James said she first saw him in March, when he was perched on her back fence making honking noises.

“He was a majestic bird with magnificent colours,” she said. “So many people on the street got so much joy and pleasure from him coming up and saying hello.”

Border closures have forced the Griffin resident to cut out crossings into South Australia and the Northern Territory (NT) across the Simpson Desert.

Now in Alice Springs, she will instead head north and then use the Plenty Highway to reach the Queensland border and come down through Boulia to Birdsville.

From there the 53-yearold will do a loop into the Simpson Desert and back again to tick off the 10th and final desert of her 140day fundraising marathon.

He said they had traded through some deep recessions – staying the course and staying strong.

The Golden Ox team is seeing it again as they emerge from another COVID-19 lockdown.

“I feel very happy. In Australia, we have a great life. When all is said and done, where else would you be?,” he asked.

“Customers say they’re so lucky and happy to be able

to come out and enjoy some food and a glass of wine.”

Hospitality is in Mr Tzimas’ blood with members of his mother’s family in the industry back in Greece. He migrated as a 28-year-old and opened The Country Steakhouse two years later at Kippa-Ring.

It was a leap of faith that if they “did the right things, other things would look after themselves”.

They opened at their present location at Margate on October 16, 1980.

Key to their success has been their willingness to evolve and try new things.

“You look forward to what you’ll do … being inventive.

You need to reinvent

yourself, you can’t stay the same. We’re creating menus now,” Mr Tzimas said.

He said it was something guests and the general public noticed.

“It’s their restaurant.

I feel the restaurant and the guests have become connected and they’ve adopted us,” he said.

“It’s not our restaurant, it’s their restaurant. They say, ‘we want you to do well, we want you to be OK, we want you to be here. It means so much to us’.”

Smiley talks: Bayside, Bee Gees and beyond

STORY JODIE POWELL COLIN ‘Smiley’ Petersen is returning to where his musical career began on the Peninsula, with a special performance at the Redcliffe Entertainment Centre.

The Bee Gees’ first drummer got his start in the industry as a pupil at Humpybong State School, where he joined the marching band.

“It’s one thing to learn the pattern, it’s another to learn while you’re marching around in time with a deep snare drum strapped around your shoulder.

“During the week I played in the marching band and at night we had a little cubby house just big enough for an adult to stand in, but it had room for a kit of drums and a wind-up gramophone on a platform so it was really close to my ear.”

With records being expensive in the 1950s, Petersen’s collection only contained about 20, each with just one song with which to practice his drumming.

“What that taught me was to analyse every last bit of the record – I had about three hours of music on record, and as a result I knew every note and every instrument.

“I was taking lessons from a jazz drummer – rock'n'roll was a year or two away, hence it was a world of jazz.”

While Petersen and the Gibb brothers all attended Humpybong State School, he had already moved to Brisbane when they made their journey from England as 10-pound Poms.

But he discovered years later after meeting Maurice Gibb and his sister Lesley at a Sydney venue that the iconic 1956 movie Smiley, in which he played the title role alongside legendary Australian actors Chips Rafferty

and Charles “Bud” Tingwell, had influenced the Gibbs’ move to Australia.

The story of a mischievous young boy in a rural community who finds himself accidentally caught up in an opium trafficking scam as he strives to save up for a shiny bike is set in a small town filled with fascinating – and mostly cheerful – characters.

Australia was the place to go Young Smiley and his cheeky mate Joey spend their time between adventures running barefoot through the fields and catching crayfish while dreaming up ways to make money – which Petersen said would likely have held huge appeal to the Gibbs living in Manchester.

“They were planning to emigrate and it was a toss-up

between Canada and Australia,” Petersen said. “(Smiley) maybe was a factor – the family went to a cinema in Manchester and they were chatting in the car on the way home and they decided Australia was the place to go.”

Petersen and his mother spent time in London after filming Smiley in a bid to secure an agent, and he recalled the bleakness of a city where war-time rationing had just ended, bombsites still featured and attending school involved walking there and back in the dark of an icy winter.

“You can imagine Manchester would have been the same,” he said.

“In Australia at the time you would walk down the street – people had their problems – but generally speaking everyone was upbeat and there were smiling faces.

“In a way, I was like Smiley – there were a lot of Smileys on the Redcliffe peninsula.”

Petersen is looking forward to performing in Redcliffe with a tribute show that takes the audience through the highlights of the Bee Gees interspersed with anecdotes from his own time with the band – and says he’s suffered stage fright just twice in his life.

The first time was as a four-year-old tap dancer in Kingaroy where he spent his early life. The second was during the first take for one of the opening scenes in Smiley and he was up a tree pretending to be Captain Cook discovering Australia, complete with a telescope made from a stick!

THE DISCOVERY GARDEN

A FLOURISHING crop of tomatoes has inspired Jacques de Villiers to try his hand at growing other vegetables, fruit and flowers in his family’s North Lakes garden.

The eight-year-old has come a long way since March, when he started collecting Discovery Garden seeds from his local Woolworths supermarket.

The seed kits were given to customers for each $30 spent and Jacques’ mother said it had inspired her son to get outside and give gardening a go.

“Every time we went to the shop, he would ask for the seeds,” Mrs de Villiers said.

“In the end I said to him, 'we probably need to plant some of them'.”

And so, he planted them and as his crop began to grow, the family bought a greenhouse frame and lace curtains to create a “greenhouse” on the back patio, protecting the young plants from the elements and the birds.

Jacques has harvested more than 50 tomatoes, along with silverbeet.

“They’re really yummy, better than from the shops,” he said.

He has also planted poppy, salvia and zenia seeds as well as salad greens, lettuces, pineapples, strawberries, guava, a mulberry tree, carrots, silverbeet and bunching onions.

Jacques said he did not really

like going outside much before he discovered gardening, but now he likes getting his hands dirty and watching his plants grow.

“I can eat them and I can spend lots of my time doing gardening,” he said.

Jacques would love to plant an avocado tree and already has his eye on a garden bed down the side of the house for other plants.

Mrs de Villiers said he was always pottering around, watering and checking how his plants were looking.

“He enjoys doing things with his plants. They can only do so much Lego, then they’re bored,” she said.

“It’s been so educational for him, doing this more so than sitting him down and talking about it.”

She said he had learnt more

about where food came from, sustainability and how crops relied on people to keep them alive.

“These plants are depending on him. He’s using a small space to grow a lot,” she said.

“For the sustainability of our planet, we need every household to start thinking about what they can do to contribute.”

The family feeds food scraps to their chickens and uses their manure on the garden, and Mrs de Villiers said they shared the crop with others.

“It’s good for kids to see that,” she said.

“It would be lovely if we could all grow something and swap it with each other.”

IN THIS edition, we’ll continue to cover the topic of hardbodies.

Minnow-style lures can be cast and retrieved or trolled and are again, a prey item imitation. On the underside of the head of the lure they have a bib or are moulded to make the lure dive when retrieved.

Size and angles of bibs dictate how deep the lure will swim. Minnows are available in floating, neutrally buoyant (suspending), and sinking models. When paused, floating lures will rise back towards the surface, suspenders remain at depth and sinking models do just that, sink. Floating lures have varying degrees of buoyancy and sinking lures have differing sink rates between brands and models.

Used in both salt and freshwater, the range of actions cover everything from a wide, slow wobble to a tighter, faster action during retrieve. As a general rule, freshwater lures display a slower action while saltwater models exhibit a tighter, faster, shimmying action.

However, our retrieve style should be experimented with, beyond a simple cast out and wind back, as in many cases predators will be drawn to an erratic action mimicking an injured or distressed baitfish.

Twitch and pause, wind and pause, and rip and pause are only three different types of retrieval that have proven to be successful on many species.

Floaters can be twitched back, with each twitch causing the lure to dive a short distance and bob back to the surface or wound down to its running depth and twitched back at depth for the entire retrieve.

Similar techniques can be used with sinking lures except they descend during pauses.

Suspenders are one of my all-time favourite lures. They should be wound down to depth adjacent to structure, paused and then given tiny twitches keeping the lure at the same depth and almost stationary in the water. In still water particularly, this is a deadly technique as the angler can mimic a dying baitfish right in front of a predator, making it impossible to resist.

Experimentation is key, retrieve technique is only limited by our imagination.

• Winter whiting in Bramble Bay across to the mouth of the Brisbane River, and in Deception Bay across to the Cockle Banks.

Ask EVERY so often people collecting bait or kids around rock pools encounter the blue ringed octopus.

There are four species of blue ringed octopus in the world, with the most common species in Moreton Bay only growing to about 5cm in body length.

They are well known to be along the shoreline of the Redcliffe peninsula.

They might be small and shy, but they pack a punch. They frequently feature on internet lists of the top 10 deadly animals from Australia. The good news is that they are not going to chase after you and bite you. Most envenomations have come from people handling the animal and for most people there is never a need to touch them.

When undisturbed, the octopus lacks blue rings. It is only when the animal is threatened that the blue rings appear. The blue rings signal to potential predators to stay away. Blue is a rare colour among animals but when it occurs it often has meaning.

After advertising that you should leave it alone, continuing to bother the animal may see it bite. Most victims do not feel the actual bite because it is so small. However, the onset of symptoms can occur in just minutes. Once this toxin is in your body it shuts down all the nerves in your nervous system.

DR DAZZA and lips, paralysis, respiratory failure and very occasionally death. The paralysis that overcomes the victim is only to their voluntary muscles; they remain fully conscious. If mouth to mouth resuscitation is given to a victim of a blueringed octopus, they should fully recover. There is no antivenom.

The toxin that does the damage is tetrodotoxin. It is the same toxin that is found in toadfish. The octopus does not make the toxin. It is made by bacteria in the animal’s salivary glands. The toxin is injected into a victim when the animal bites and the amount of toxin that a single tiny octopus contains is enough to kill several adults.

Blue ringed octopus have a life span of only a couple of years.

A single female blue ringed octopus only lays between 50 and 100 eggs. The octopus dies after reproducing.

If you are around the Moreton Bay foreshore and see a tiny octopus about the size of a golf ball, admire it but don’t touch it.

Breath of fresh air at comedy night LAUGHTER filled Caboolture Town Square on Sunday night, when a hilarious line-up of comedians took to the stage for an Open Air Comedy Night.

The event was part of Caboolture Festival and featured performers Steph Tisdell, Ting Lim, Matt Ford, Cassi Marie, Jo Gowda, Steve Allison, Heidi and Scott, and

Birdman Randy and The Ivory Street Preachers.

A number of comedians due to perform at the free event were unable to travel to Queensland due to COVID-19 restrictions, including Akmal Saleh.

The Queensland-based comedians jumped at the chance to perform at the event which included live music, food trucks and pop-up bar

and was hosted by Lindsay Webb.

Caboolture Festival’s Open Air Comedy Night was proudly delivered by Moreton Bay Region Industry and Tourism (MBRIT) and supported by Sit Down Comedy Club and strategic partner Moreton Bay Regional Council.

However, in the current market, sellers are highly unlikely to be interested in this type of proposal (after all they will have other options) unless you pay a big premium on the purchase to make it worth the risk. Even then they’ll typically expect you to sell your place super-quickly. Obviously, these are not ideal circumstances to make sound financial decisions and tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars can evaporate in the process.

STORY KYLIE KNIGHT RUGBY League fans are relishing the chance to see the game’s best close to home with Moreton Daily Stadium hosting its first NRL double-header on August 15 and more to come in the weeks ahead.

About 5000 fans took in the action, when the Cronulla Sharks took on Newcastle Knights and Canterbury Bulldogs played Vodafone Warriors.

It was a homecoming for Cronulla’s Toby Rudolf, who was part of the 2018 Dolphins premiership-winning side, and the Bulldog’s Corey Horsburg who was a Dolphins junior.

Rudolf has credited the Dolphins for reviving his love of the game and setting him on the path to the NRL. The joy on his face during a sideline interview was evident as supporters in the crowd cheered and he responded.

“I love Redcliffe. I love being back. It’s like coming home,” Rudolf said.

Newcastle Knights’ Kayln Ponga and Connor Watson also loved playing in front of the enthusiastic crowd at Moreton Daily Stadium.

Dolphins CEO Tony Murphy said the atmosphere was electric for the first double-header and it was a great opportunity for fans from South East Queensland to experience the Dolphins and Moreton Daily Stadium at their best.

“The ground looked great and we had a good crowd, only 50 per cent but that was due to COVID-19 restrictions,” Mr Murphy said.

“It was a wonderful afternoon. It put us on the national stage and the Dolphins team from the groundsmen right through was marvellous.”

Mr Murphy said he was

looking forward to the next couple of weekends with 75 per cent capacity crowds.

“Queensland has been doing a great job in managing COVID-19 and we’re hoping it will be a great couple of weekends,” he said.

“We’ve got some wonderful players that will be playing ahead of the finals like Tom Trbojevic and Nathan Cleary when Manly take on Penrith on August 29.”

Mayor Peter Flannery said the success of the region’s first NRL matches had secured another mammoth weekend of nail-biting action.

“The NRL have had their first taste of Moreton Bay, and it’s clear they want

more,” Mayor Flannery said.

“The first double-header was one to remember, bringing together footy fans, bolstering local business and boosting the spirits of residents coming out of lockdown.

“The feedback from players (such as Rudolf, Ponga and Watson) further cements Redcliffe as the home of rugby league and why we should be the starting lineup when the NRL chooses the comp’s 17th team.

“With finals just around the corner, I hope locals continue to show their support by coming along to watch another dazzling double header on Sunday, August 29.”

CAPTAIN’S CALL IT’S been five weeks with no games and we are absolutely raring to go this weekend when footy kicks off again.

In what was supposed to be our last game of the season, we play East Tigers on Saturday night at 6pm.

The season has been extended for two further weeks however there is talk it may be cut back again and semi-finals could be kicking off next week.

It’s been a very different season with so much unknown and the stop-start nature of the competition due to the COVID-19 lockdowns. We have continued to train hard and stick together as a team to make sure we were ready to perform as soon as we got the chance.

The opportunity will present itself this weekend and we welcome a few players back from injury and suspension.

With a healthy squad and sitting in equal second on the ladder, we are in a great position.

And with restrictions easing, the boys are hoping we can play in front of our loyal Dolphins fans and members this weekend which is exciting! Last time we met Easts we just secured victory by two points so it should be a great game.

WHILE most sport was forced into a temporary shutdown by the recent COVID outbreak, golf and tennis were among those able to continue – under strict rules.

Redcliffe Golf Club and Redcliffe Tennis Centre remained open under the regulations, which included social distancing, not sharing equipment such as tennis racquets and removing golf flags with a gloved hand.

Lori’s Olympic debut STORY NICK CROCKFORD LORI Chaplin was just metres from Australian swimming history at the Tokyo Olympic Games.

The Southern Cross Swimming Club member was part of an international team of race referees on the water at Odiaba Marine Park in Tokyo.

She was closer than most as Kareena Lee won Australia’s first Olympic marathon swimming medal.

Once the officials had ensured everyone raced “fairly and safely” and medals were presented, Mrs Chaplin said Lee’s achievement sunk in.

“I could not have been happier for her,” said the Burpengary East resident.

“It was such a proud moment. So wonderful.”

Mrs Chaplin was selected as a Technical Official representing Australia, New Zealand and Oceania for the Olympic 10km marathon open water swimming on August 4-5.

“The Olympics exceeded all my expectations,” she said, “nothing beats it.

“I wasn’t nervous. Once we were out on the water I could see Tokyo, the TV tower, the Olympic rings … all so real and so exciting.”

“We thank the PCYC for all its support over the years,” Mr McDonald said, “this will be our first season as a stand-alone club.

“The process started about two months ago and when it came to the name it was a no-brainer.

“Betty was on the (PCYC) club committee, she was a very good friend and absolutely selfless in her support for the club.

“We spoke to Betty’s family about the name and they were happy and honoured for us to use it.”

NEW dates have been set for the remaining fixtures for Redcliffe State High School’s Rugby League Program of Excellence.

The Year 10s, currently sixth on the ladder, were due to play their final match against Ipswich yesterday (August 24).

Redcliffe’s Year 8s face Palm Beach Currumbin at Beenleigh on August 31 and the Open’s (Years 1112) line-up against Clairvaux McKillop in the Gee Shield Grand Final at Carina on September 1.

Pathway to top league A new pathway is opening up for the region’s emerging baseball players which may help them reach the ABL (Australia Baseball League).

The 10-week Futures League has been launched

by Baseball Queensland (BQ) for players aged 17-24 to demonstrate their abilities to ABL clubs.

BQ CEO Gareth Jones said registered players could nominate for the draft. Those outside the age range may also be considered.

Matches are likely to be at two central locations.

Mrs Chaplin flew back with the Matildas football team and quarantined for two weeks in Sydney, saying it was “well worth it for the experience of Tokyo.”

Her Olympic debut will join a Swimming Australia pin, for 10 consecutive years of national meets, as landmarks in a career of more than 20 years.

Water has been part of Mrs Chaplin’s life since her children were swimming and continues with her husband’s love of fishing.

She started officiating to help at a club meet and worked up through Brisbane and state events to travelling Australia and going overseas to Papua New Guinea and Samoa.

“Some events you can have 100 competitors going into the water and you have to make sure 100 come out safely,” Mrs Chaplin said.

“It’s attention to detail, making sure everyone can race fairly and safely.”

Every three years open water officials have to complete a training course with the world body FINA,

which includes first aid and getting an 85 per cent written exam pass mark.

FINA representatives are appointed for four years Mrs Chaplin is in her third, but she has been reappointed for another four.

However, Mrs Chaplin also helps mentor our next generation of pool and open water officials.

She was, over the years, the PCYC Club Delegate, President, Secretary, Treasurer, coach and statistician and held numerous roles with Brisbane Softball Association.

In 1983 Mrs Paxton approached Redcliffe PCYC and with its support Redcliffe and Districts Softball Association was formed.

Within six years the association had its own grounds, named The Betty Paxton Field in 2000 and in the same year Mrs Paxton received the OAM. She died last year aged 90.

Paxton Pride is hoping to build junior and senior numbers this season.

Mr McDonald said softball was one of the cheapest sports to play, with matches The next generation of softballers rising through the ranks at Paxton Pride. all at the same venue.

MORETON Bay Raiders rugby league players are back in action this weekend in what will be the final fixtures of their regular season.

Raiders’ Under 15 Division 3 side currently third on the ladder, hosts leaders Capalaba at 11.30am on Sunday.

Before that, Raiders’ Under 13s face Waterford, kick-off 10am.

Both games are at the club’s home ground Ken Hayward Oval, Government St, Deception Bay.

Ryan hoping for restart NORTH Lakes racer Ryan Suhle is hoping the Porsche Sprint Challenge will restart again this year.

He is currently top of the Mobil Pro standings in the Porsche Sprint Challenge after completing the early rounds, but lockdowns in other states have brought the racing calendar to a halt.

Suhle said plans were being drawn up for “a few more races” to be held later in the year.

It follows the 2020 season which was also hard hit by the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Nate’s hat-trick haul STORY NICK CROCKFORD KART racer Nate Wood has added three more trophies to his growing collection at Woody Point.

In the past two weeks, the nine-year-old has received the 2021-21 Sub Junior Champion and Junior Champion of Champions trophies at Maryborough Speedway.

Then on Sunday, it was the Sub Junior Club Champion award at the Sunstate Speedway Kart Club.

His father Ben also received the 2020-21 Standard Class Championship at the Nudgee-based club.

Nate, a Southern Cross Catholic College student, then made a flying start to 2021-2022 winning heats and the feature race at the Kingsford Smith Dve track.

His parents were also among the awards - Ben finishing second in the Standard class and mum Kelly third in the Modified section, to go with Nate’s win in Sub Juniors.

Not only is Nate often one of the youngest in his races, he also suffers from Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and has development difficulties.

Despite that he now has more than 60 trophies, including one from the SKAA 2020-21 Australian Championships in April, finishing third in the sub junior (7-10 years) class. But for a slip in the feature race it would have been higher!

This weekend the Wood family has a double header, racing at Carina-Speedway on Saturday and then Maryborough on Sunday.

Top two clash

Redcliffe PCYC, second on the Capital League 2 football ladder, travels to leaders North Brisbane on Saturday, 6pm.

Just two points separate the sides but PCYC has played one more game.

Nate Wood has added three more trophies to his collection in the past two weeks.

Evans’ three-month wait to end this week REDCLIFFE driver Kyle Evans is hoping to be back behind the wheel this weekend for the first time in three months.

The 16-year-old has not raced since late May after

COVID closed state borders and forced the national Formula Ford championship to be put on hold.

However, he has entered the three-day Warwick 1000, being held from Au-

gust 27-29, with eight race groups and more than 30 sprint races.

Evans was hoping to race in the QRDA (Queensland Racing Drivers’ Association) Round 6 last weekend,

but Formula Fords have now been withdrawn from the schedule.

Evans was, however, able to take part in Friday’s practice sessions at Morgan Park, near Warwick.

Tigers are ‘honoured’ to host grand finals FIVE of the six Redcliffe AFL Tigers youth teams to make the finals will battle it out for a place in the Grand Final on home turf this weekend.

President Gayle Wetzel said AFLQ granting the Tigers the right to host the youth finals was an honour for the club.

The match was scheduled for August 24 at Moreton Daily Stadium – but the impact of the recent COVID lockdown and restrictions

on community sport forced a postponement.

Football Australia (FA), which runs the competition, has “expressed its

commitment to complete the FFA Cup in 2021, should it be safe to do so”.

The FA said it will “endeavour to provide a sub-

stantial update to the football community before the end of August.
