NINETEEN-year-old singer Zoe Quinn has known she wanted to perform since she first danced on stage in the Chai Tent at the Woodford Folk Festival.

Quinn, who released her latest single, Walking Away, on New Year’s Eve at Woodfordia, remembers the moment vividly.

“When I was four, I was dancing out the front of the Chai Tent and the artist invited me up on stage to dance. I knew from then that I wanted to be up on stage,” Quinn recalled.

Last year Quinn graced stages at Redcliffe Kitefest, the Caboolture Festival and Suttons Beach Pavilion at Redcliffe, as well as the Anywhere Festival, Woodford Bushtime and Bar Wunder in Toowoomba.

While most of her music has been “Indie/Folk/Pop”, Walking Away, produced at Camp Mountain’s Airlock Studios – founded by Powderfinger lead guitarist Ian Haug – takes things up a notch.

“It was the first time I had live drums and you can really hear it build,” Quinn said.

Former mayor’s charges dropped STORY KYLIE KNIGHT FORMER Moreton Bay Regional Council Mayor Allan Sutherland is calling for a commission of inquiry or a Royal Commission after charges against him were dropped last week.

The Director of Public Prosecutions officially dropped the charges – two counts of misconduct in public office – during a hearing in Brisbane Magistrate’s Court on January 20. It followed an investigation by the Crime and Corruption Commission.

Mr Sutherland, pictured,

was charged and suspended as Mayor in late 2019. The allegations centred on a property he owned at Burpengary and the upgrade of the road on which it was located. It was also alleged he lobbied councillors in relation to a planning scheme.

When asked if he would

have preferred the legal process to continue and have received a ‘‘not guilty’’ verdict, he said no.

Mr Sutherland said the Department of Public Prosecutions ‘‘decided not to proceed with the charges and offered no evidence’’.

He said that was very different to ‘‘insufficient evidence’’, because no evidence was offered.

“I believed right from the start there was no evidence, there were a lot of assumptions made by the CCC but there was no evidence,” he said.

Mr Sutherland said the whole saga had been an ‘‘assault on the democratic process’’ to remove a mayor who had been elected seven times.

“I was put in by the people and should have been taken out by the people,” he said.

He also questioned the way the investigation was conducted.

“I’m not going to stop until I get to the bottom of it.

I don’t want any more people being persecuted in this way,” Mr Sutherland said.

“They don’t understand the massive ramifications that happen for a council

when a mayor is removed, and also on those people and their families.

“I believe there are serious answers I need for closure and I won’t rest until I get those answers. I have a lot offer any inquiry.”

He said an inquiry might go some way to repair his reputation but conceded some people would always think “where there’s smoke, there’s fire”.

Mr Sutherland said for him the saddest aspect was not having a resolution before his mother died.

He criticised the CCC, saying it was “out of con-

trol” and its Chair Alan MacSporran should resign.

Local Government Association of Queensland (LGAQ) CEO Alison Smith has also called for an overhaul and for Mr MacSporran to resign.

In a statement, a CCC spokesperson said: “The CCC respects and accepts the decision of the independent ODPP”.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has said Cabinet would consider the CCC’s future when it reconvened.

Mr Sutherland, 65, has no plans to return to local government.

THE battle over the future of North Lakes Golf Course land seems destined to go to the Planning and Environment Court.

Developer The Village Retirement Group (TVRG) sought a “variation request” to the Mango Hill Infrastructure Development Control Plan (Mango Hill DCP) to aid its application to build a retirement village and aged care facility.

However, following a review of the application, Moreton Bay Regional Council said it could not be accepted in that form.

Council and the applicant were then unable to reach agreement on the “type and form” of development application, though this was a not a refusal of the application. TVRG has informed Council it will apply to the Planning and Environment Court for a ruling on, among other things, whether the development application can be made, as submitted, to Council. The Council said it was “disappointed a pathway could not be agree to” but it was in the best interests of all to seek ‘‘clear guidance and direction from the court”.

AS THE Dolphins count down to the start of the 2023 season, a group of diehard fans is mobilising online ready to celebrate every moment.

About five months ago Daniel Moses of Clontarf started the Redcliffe Dolphins NRL Fans Facebook Group, which now has more than 7000 members and continues to grow.

“I’m a big Dolphins fan and went to all the games last year with my family,” Mr Moses said.

“I’ve always been into the Dolphins and supported the bid and wanted to get involved and get as many people in the community involved as I could.”

His connection with the club goes back 15 years.

“It was a team that had good history and good backing and a great club to be involved in. You always feel welcomed at the club and the team is engaged with the fan base,” he explained.

The Dolphins have welcomed interest from fans in the new franchise.

REDCLIFFE Discount Pharmacy has a long history of helping its customers navigate health challenges, and while its team has never experienced the likes of COVID-19 before, it has embraced a philosophy that dates back to 1955.

Pharmacist-in-charge Abbey Caban and pharmacist Will Nye said while they were on the frontline as customers sought information, medication and Rapid Antigen Test kits, they did not consider themselves heroes.

“This is the job. You get into it because you have that want to help the community. It’s part of the gig,” Mr Nye said.

“I feel very lucky that we’ve been able to keep working, millions of others haven’t been able to,” Ms Caban said.

Many customers see the team at Redcliffe Discount Pharmacy more regularly than they see their doctors, enabling staff to monitor medications but also mental health.

Mr Nye said this had been more important than ever during the past two years, particularly for elderly customers who had been isolated due to lockdowns and government guidelines.

“We’ve been doing a lot of work to foster these relationships and be a shoul-

TUCKED away in a laboratory at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, Scarborough’s Angela Coriat leads a dedicated team of 100 hidden heroes working around the clock to keep the community safe.

Few people give a second thought about their swabs once they leave a COVID-19 testing centre – other than when they will get the result.

But Mrs Coriat and the specialist technicians have focused on little else other than the hundreds of thousands of slender sticks they have processed since the pandemic struck in early 2020.

The manager of the Core Laboratory at the RBWH describes herself as just one person among a massive state-wide response to COVID-19 by Pathology Queensland – the public provider for pathology testing for Queensland.

When the pandemic first hit, the team was responsi-

ble for processing all of Queensland’s COVID testing.

While Mrs Coriat and her team were used to round-theclock work, they had no inkling of the tsunami of tests that would head their way.

“I recall the very first Saturday back in early 2020 when the first testing numbers surged and my team were inundated with swabs and called me for help,” Mrs Coriat said.

“We hadn’t experienced anything like this before and for a number of months I was very hands-on.

“With over 100 staff in my laboratory we are also responsible for urgent COVID testing to assist in patient flow in the emergency department, the processing and referral as required

Ms Caban said they had also been an important source of accurate information, which was changing frequently.

“We’re also the most accessible by phone call or walk-ins. You don’t have to get an appointment, we’re not closed during a lockdown,” she said.

The pharmacy has also provided a home medication delivery service for customers.

“I think the team’s coped incredibly well. It’s a challenge for us on a daily basis, but they’ve really stepped up,” Mr Nye said.

Ms Caban said team members were supporting each other and trying to keep things light-hearted. Most customers have been understanding and supportive.

So, what is the team’s message to the community?

“Hold fast and know the resources are available to you. We are here to help and we’re part of the community. If you’re in need, let us know,” Mr Nye said.

He said pharmacists had knowledge, were in a position to provide information to customers and were accessible. “We don’t just put stickers on boxes. We are an under-utilised resource,” he said.

As a state-wide service, Pathology Queensland is equipped to transport specimens for testing, but Mrs Coriat said logistical creativity came to the fore when planes were grounded and flights cancelled – yet swabs still needed to reach Brisbane or Townsville for testing.

“As an organisation we responded rapidly, with staff driving samples in relay style across the vast state of Queensland and we even had one of our pathologists flying specimens from Rockhampton to Brisbane on his weekend off,” she said.

Mrs Coriat said Pathology Queensland played a critical role in keeping other healthcare workers in the field.

on our frontline heroes CARLOS Lakerdis has worked in supermarkets since 1984, trading in the aftermath of cyclones and the 2011 floods, but he says trading during the COVID-19 pandemic has been unlike any natural disaster.

The manager of Everfresh Food Market at Mango Hill’s Capestone Village said it had been a challenging two years with industry-wide stock and staff shortages.

His team has had to adapt quickly since opening the store in October, but the latest outbreak has presented opportunities.

“Because it hit the majors first, when they ran out (of stock) people came to us,” Mr Lakerdis said.

While some categories had been heavily affected, the team had managed to get stock in because they worked with a broader net-

“We create a space of routine and normality for families and for their little ones - we support working families and those studying as well,” Ms Lines.

“We are across the road from Redcliffe Hospital, so keeping our doors open to care for the children of frontline healthcare workers has been an essential part of our service. We provide casual and flexible care solutions for essential workers.”

For families, the team has been a space of connection during an isolating time.

“A lot of parents have concerns or fears and I know by lending an ear I have greatly helped many parents get things off their chest,” Ms Lines said.

“We provide a safe and caring space for children, giving them somewhere they belong and can be themselves. Another important part we play in supporting families is to help them in understanding the ongoing changes of COVID restrictions.”

The uncertainty has also been challenging for the team. “Although we have experienced many moments of feeling overwhelmed with the unknown of this pandemic; it has also helped strengthen our relationships as a centre and organisation with children, families, and each other,” she said.

Her message to families is simple: “We are here for you”.

Mr Lakerdis was working at a store at Murrumba Downs in the early stages of the pandemic, when it was discovered two customers had been there while infectious.

He said managing that situation was tougher than the present outbreak because isolation rules were different and people were out of action for 14 days.

“I lost 35 team members in two days. That was more than a third of my team including the entire management team,” he said.

The work his team does is vital in providing customers with essential food and products.

“We’re not doing extra-long hours, but we have adjusted our lives to be available on a seven-day

This is to manage staff absences and to be on call when stock arrives.

He said all team members were coming in, when asked.

“They’re doing it because they want to be that team that does it for the customer,” Mr Lakerdis said.

“They’re coping pretty well. The stressful part for a few of them is when customers come in and refuse to wear masks or get narky when we ask them to.

“Staff are not wanting to go home with COVID that they could pass on to their family or friends. We ask for patience from customers. We’re endeavouring to get the shop full.”

Mr Lakerdis said stock levels would return to normal once staff absences stabilised among suppliers, distribution centres and at a local store level.

Rallying support for Tonga FORMER Moreton Bay Regional Councillor Koliana Winchester has set up a Red Cross fundraising page in a bid to help the organisation provide humanitarian aid to the people of Tonga.

It follows a 5.8 magnitude volcanic eruption and subsequent tsunami, which devastated many communities across the South Pacific island kingdom on January 15.

Mrs Winchester grew up in Tonga and has two sisters and extended family still living there. Communications to Tonga are still patchy but she has received word they are safe.

She aims to raise $2500 to “ensure the Red Cross Movement can be there to provide humanitarian support to people and communities affected by the Tonga volcanic eruption and tsunami”.

“A lot of people got in touch with me to see how they could donate. With COVID, I couldn’t do what I would normally do (organise a fundraising event).

“I know it’s a very tough time for the community here as well, with COVID, that’s why I put up that (modest) amount and hopefully I can reach that target.”

Mrs Winchester said collecting and delivering goods was difficult at present and the best way to help was to donate money via the Red Cross.

“It will help them to continue to deliver aid and do what they can to help those who have been affected,” she said.

She has lived in Tonga during tropical cyclones but can’t imagine what it was like for people when the eruption and tsunami struck.

“When I was watching this unfold, I thought this is the worst ever… especially the ash,” she says.

A MARINE Rescue volunteer, a University of the Third Age champion, a man dedicated to helping the homeless and a volunteer credited with growing the next generation of sporting stars have been recognised at this year’s Moreton Bay Region Australia Day awards.

Bribie Island’s Graham Gibb received the top gong in Moreton Bay Regional Council’s 2022 awards, in a streamlined awards program with just two categories – Citizen of the Year and Mayor’s Community Spirit.

Mr Gibb said he was proud to be among those recognised and equally proud to be part of an amazing community.

“The best thing about

As a senior radio officer with Volunteer Marine Rescue Bribie Island for more than a decade, Mr Gibb plays a vital role in protecting people enjoying Moreton Bay and supporting crews on the water, as well shoring up the future of the organisation.

Having worked for the NSW Road Traffic Authority for about 40 years, Mr Gibb said he relished the

chance to use his skills with Marine rescue and as a Volunteer in Policing for almost a decade.

His wife, Rebecca, said her husband’s contribution to the community was fitting.

“He always says ‘when you’re working, you receive and when you finish, it’s your time to repay it,” Mrs Gibb said.

Among Mr Gibb’s proudest achievements, is establishing Bribie’s annual Emergency Services Expo, which is now the biggest in South East Queensland.

“Last year was its seventh year and the outstanding thing about it is the commitment from all the exhibitors,” he said.

In his role with the RTA, Mr Gibb spent a lot of time working with police and said joining the force

as a Volunteer in Policing seemed a natural fit.

“Our Coffee with a Cop has been a great success.

It’s an ever-evolving role and one where what you put in is what you get back,” he said.

He was humbled to be named Citizen of the Year. “To be in the presence of the Community Spirit Award winners… some of the things I have done pale into insignificance,” he said.

Bribie Island’s Ann Brooks, Lawnton’s Len McCandless and Morayfield’s Mick Klein received Mayor’s Community Spirit awards for their work with the Bribie Island U3A, working with the homeless and establishing the Caboolture Sports Club respectively.

Kensington Village Newsagency at Bray Park leads the way with almost $4 million in prizes won by customers last year.

The final figure of $3,825,904.03 was largely made up of the region’s biggest single winner − $3,062,082.06 in the Saturday Gold Lotto draw on February 20.

“I can’t stop shaking! This is unreal,” the man said at the time, vowing to pay off his mortgage, buy a flash new car and travel around the world.

In second place was Midway News, at Redcliffe, with $2,198,742.38, again with a major win – $1,596,016.92 in the Saturday Gold Lotto on January 2.

LAKESIDE Raceway will host a fundraiser on February 4 for the family of Senior Constable David Masters and Blue Hope.

Senior Constable Masters, pictured, was killed in June last year while deploying road spikes on the Bruce Highway at Burpengary.

He was based at Deception Bay Police Station and left behind a wife and son.

Funds will also go to Blue Hope, the organisation supporting police officers with mental health problems.

About 100 vehicles, including Mad Max cars and Ferraris, are expected at the private event, doing laps and a timed sprint.

The event has been named Bronze by the Lake – Bronze being the name police are referred to in the Mad Max films. It is hoped it will become an annual event supporting different causes, but with Blue Hope being the standard.

Training to help young people

ABOUT 50 frontline workers including guidance officers, child protection officers and police in the Moreton Bay Region received youth mental health training late last year.

Moreton District Crime Prevention Co-ordinator Sarah Grayson said the training, made possible through a mental health grant, aimed to better equip frontline workers to deal with young people suffering mental health issues.

Others trained across

three courses, held throughout the year, included staff from Deception Bay Community Youth Programs and youth workers.

“I think it’s been a very tough two years for everyone, but especially young people, who rely on being able to hang out with their peers,” Sgt Grayson said.

“Lots of people are really passionate about helping our young people.”

Sgt Grayson said another course would run this year.

Youth mental health courses organised by Redcliffe police for frontline staff will benefit the region’s youth.

Passion for community a key driver STORY JODIE POWELL FOSTERING community pride and focusing on the needs of the region while serving her own division are among the key goals of Moreton Bay’s newest councillor.

Voted in at the region’s first by-election in December, Yvonne Barlow is relishing the chance to represent the community again after a 13-year absence from council chambers.

The former Pine Rivers Shire Division 10 Councillor acknowledges the local government landscape has changed since the shire was dissolved to make way for Moreton Bay Regional Council – an amalgamation of Pine Rivers, Caboolture and Redcliffe councils – in 2008. But she said the passion residents had for the communities in which they lived had not.

“Some things I am working on at the moment are things I was involved in then and the residents are still involved,” Cr Barlow said.

“It’s great to be able to work with them again − you have to know where you have come from to be

While she’s keen to lobby on behalf of the residents of Division 7, Cr Barlow said she was also conscious of the need to represent the whole region and contribute to decision making that would benefit the greater good.

“I left council 13 years ago and a lot has changed in that time – there’s a lot more layers and governance but they’re all important.”

Speaking to Moreton Daily News at the park named in her honour at Murrumba Downs, Cr Barlow says she brings the same drive to the role that she did when first elected in 1997.

While the region’s population has surged by more than 100,000 people in the past decade – the increase bringing with it complexity in terms of planning and ensuring infrastructure keeps pace with growth – Cr Barlow said it was still vital to ensure smaller projects that could also make a big difference did not fall by the wayside.

RECONSTRUCTION work to ease flooding issues at the intersection of Henry and Dohles Rocks roads at Griffin is expected to start in the middle of this year.

Moreton Bay Regional Council last week awarded a $10.7 million contract for the work to Hazell Bros, with completion expected by mid-2023.

The project aims to improve flood immunity, with work including raising the road level, building a new road and pavement and installing signals at the modified intersection.

Works also include constructing a new nonsignalised T-intersection along Henry Rd for entry and exit into the new Griffin Sports Complex, which will be delivered in conjunction with the ongoing construction of the facility.

Judgement in former Compass Marina court case THE former operator of Redcliffe Marina, once known as Compass Marina, has lost its appeal and been ordered to pay more than $9 million in unpaid rent and interest.

The Court of Appeal dismissed an appeal by Compass Marinas Australia and its sole director Peter Victor Francis Harburg on

December 23.

The decision ends protracted legal action which culminated in Compass closing the 50-berth marina in early 2020, leaving many people living on boats berthed there high and dry.

The state Transport and Main Roads department had previously succeeded

in a Supreme Court action to recover the outstanding rent which Compass failed to pay under the lease, despite continuing to collect berthing fees from boaties occupying the marina.

Maritime Safety Queensland acting general manager Andrew Mahon said the Court of Appeal decision to dismiss

Compass’s appeal now paved the way for the State Government to collect more than $9 million in unpaid rent and interest.

“Overcoming this final legal hurdle ends a complex legal dispute which has run for several years,” Mr Mahon said. “Recovered rent and interest totalling $9.48 million will be

returned to our selffunded state boat harbours to offset operating and maintenance costs.”

State Member for Redcliffe Yvette D’Ath said the Court of Appeal’s decision was a win for the Redcliffe community.

“I thank the Department of Transport and Main Roads who responded to my calls for support for the former residents of Compass Marina who were

about to be evicted,” Ms D’Ath said.

“Since the department has taken over the management of the marina, the infrastructure has been upgraded to make it safe and pleasant for residents.

“I look forward to continuing to work with our entire community as we work towards a Master Plan for the Scarborough Marina.”

Over the moon about space project STORY ASHLEIGH HOWARTH CLONTARF artist Tricia Reust’s creations are out of this world, or at least they will be when her artworks are sent to the moon as part of a project being launched

by SpaceX and NASA. The Clontarf artist is one of thousands of artists to be featured as part of the Lunar Codex project, which will launch three time capsules full of books, stories, poetry, music, essays and more into space.

The time capsules are part of a bigger project that aims to return humans to the moon in 2024, more than five decades after the original moon landing.

Mrs Reust’s legacy will be immortalised at the ‘Museum on the Moon’ following her two appearances on the art television show, Put Some Colour In Your Life, with all 22 seasons of the documentary chosen to be included in the Lunar Codex.

While Mrs Reust never dreamt of being an astronaut, she was “absolutely delighted” to have a part of her travel to the cosmos.

“When an artist creates something, it becomes a big part of you and who you are as a person, so to think a tiny part of me is going to the moon, that’s pretty surreal,” she said.

“But it is not just me going into space – there is also going to be a piece of Redcliffe up there because I have images of our beautiful Redcliffe.

“The idea that my artworks will be seen by future generations, and even strike a chord with them, it’s pretty incredible to think about.”

Also excited to be displayed on another planet is the CEO and founder of the television series, Graeme Stevenson OAM. Mr Stevenson created the documentary and then distributed it to networks

in more than 50 countries, as well as many online streaming services and smart television apps.

“When I began this business back in 2009, my vision was to build a library of the minds of artists, preserving a digital record of creative spirit, culture, and techniques for future generations,” he said.

“I had no idea that the library would be kept on the moon. It’s pretty mind -blowing.

“We don’t know how long it will be there for, maybe millions of years, or who will see them, so it’s pretty exciting.”

The rocket that will house the contemporary art pieces is called The Polaris Collection and is scheduled to be launched in 2023.

Future travellers or extra-terrestrial life will be able to view the pieces with digital and analog technology, giving them a window into the past.

Basketball clinics a whole lot of fun A FREE basketball program aimed at connecting young people with each other and police has gone from strength to strength since its inception at the start of last year and will continue in 2022.

Moreton District Crime Prevention Co-ordinator Sarah Grayson said the program, which ran on Fridays during the school term, was so successful it would return this year.

“Since we engaged a professional basketball coach, the program really excelled,” Sgt Grayson said.

“We’ve had lots of kids coming every week and the kids themselves have really grown in confidence.

“You can see how they’ve progressed in their skills and it’s great to see the team spirit and them encouraging each other.”

The free program, run by Redcliffe Police and open to young people throughout the region, will continue this year at Scarborough State School.

“Being there will enable us to run the program even if the weather is bad,” Sgt Grayson said.

COVID-19 delays Council meeting

PLANS for Moreton Bay Regional Councillors to step out of the Council chamber and take meetings to the community have been postponed.

First stop for the year’s Community Council Meetings series was to be Deception Bay next month, but the event has been delayed until April 20 due to COVID-19 concerns.

The Community Meeting was to have coincided with the opening of a new $3.7 million community hall on February 16.

Mayor Peter Flannery said the $3.7 million Raymond Tce community hall project involved demolishing an old building to deliver a new events and meeting space for the community, as well as a new home for Meals on Wheels.

Mayor Flannery said the new facility would not have been possible without the Federal Government’s $2.5 million contribution from its Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program.

Division 5 Councillor Sandra Ruck said the new hall would provide better facilities as well as a boost for the local economy.

“We’ll also see plenty of progress on the old fisheries site upgrade with tradies to begin the finishing touches on the new facility.”

MEG White, who has lived in Redcliffe for more than 50 years, turned 100 on January 17.

However, there was no big party at the Azure Blue retirement home where she lives. Mrs White, instead, celebrated quietly with a birthday cake at the home on Anzac Ave. Marion Elizabeth White, known as Meg, was born at Waverley, NSW in 1922 to Nora and Leslie Abel

and had a brother Hueston (deseased).

Mrs White trained as an accountant before World War II and joined the Royal Australian Air Force from 1939-45.

She met and married Elvan White on June 27, 1945 and they had four children – Ann, Lee, Paul and Ian. There were five and Megan (deceased) grandchildren – Lynette, – as well as many great Jamie, Emma, Lacey grandchildren.

Heartworm hotspot warning for dog owners THE RSPCA has issued an urgent warning to pet owners asking them to be on the lookout for symptoms of heartworm after Deception Bay was named as a disease hotspot.

RSPCA Queensland spokesperson Emma Lagoon said there had been an increase in the number of pets needing urgent treatment.

RSPCA Queensland Chief Veterinary Officer Dr Anne Chester said heartworm was harder to treat than other worms.

“Once your pet has contracted heartworm, it can take months to rectify and treatment can be expensive,” she said.

“I cannot stress enough that heartworm is a serious

disease, most common in dogs. But cats can contract the parasite too.

“Prevention is the best method to protect your pets and avoid serious health issues.”

Dr Chester said there were a number of ways to protect pets, including using heartworm preventative medication, keeping cats indoors, and removing stagnant water from properties.

Race on for J2J early birds QUEENSLAND’S longest running fun run – the Jetty 2 Jetty Fun Run – is back and bigger than ever in 2022.

Early Bird registrations for the 2022 Jetty 2 Jetty Fun Run will close on Friday, February 4.

The 2022 event will be held on Sunday, July 17 at Pelican Park, Clontarf, but organisers are urging those interested to register early as categories are expected to sell out again this year.

“Last year’s Jetty 2 Jetty was hugely popular,” Moreton Bay Region Industry & Tourism (MBRIT) CEO Shane Newcombe said.

“We had a waiting list a mile long for people wanting to register for sold out race categories.”

The 2022 event will again offer a range of categories suited to runners and walkers of all ages and fitness levels, including 3km, 5km, 10km and 21km (half-marathon).

“After successfully introducing the 10km Elite Wheelchair category in

2021, we are proud to include this as part of the 2022 event program,” Mr Newcombe said.

“MBRIT is committed to taking even further steps to making all of our events more inclusive and accessible.”

Jetty 2 Jetty recently made strides onto the national and international stage by achieving official course certification from AIMS, the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races.

“Our event runners are now eligible to set records and achieve marathon qualification points by participating in the J2J,” Mr Newcombe said.

Mayor Peter Flannery said with the hype of South East Queensland securing the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games and the achievement of Aussie athletes at Tokyo 2020, the stage was set for the 2022 Jetty 2 Jetty to be the most thrilling one yet.

“Whether you’re a serious runner looking to achieve your best half-marathon, a business looking for a fun corporate event or have simply been inspired by our Olympic athletes − Jetty 2 Jetty is the must-do running event on the Sunshine State calendar.”

Entry prices include official 2022 merchandise with 21km and 10km entrants receiving a J2J singlet, while 3km and 5km entrants will receive a J2J visor. Merchandise is also available for purchase at the time of registration.

Runners can save on their entry fee by signing up, or joining, a team of 10 or more by May 2, receiving a 10 per cent discount.

New chapter for Clontarf Beach Scouts CLONTARF Beach Scouts have a new den to call home thanks to funding from Moreton Bay Regional Council and the Federal Government.

The den replaces a building that was susceptible to flooding and includes ease of access for people with disabilities, a large activity room and kitchen.

Mayor Peter Flannery said the $1 million facility would help nurture the leaders of tomorrow, and was made possible with a $467,687 contribution from the Federal Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program.

“As a father of a young daughter who’s almost old enough to start Scouts, I know how important it is to instil those leadership and teamwork qualities from a young age,” he said.

“Clontarf Beach Scouts’ old building was prone to regular flooding during heavy rain so they’ll be thrilled to see their new flood-free home.

Iconic Redcliffe tearoom to close STORY JODIE POWELL BELOVED Redcliffe English tearoom Teddies ’n’ Sweets will close its doors at the end of the month.

Owner Anna Connor said she made the decision on the spur of the moment when she returned from her Christmas break.

“It was on Monday morning – we had been closed for the week between Christmas and New Year and as I opened the doors it was like, ‘no, I can’t do this anymore, I’m exhausted’,” Ms Connor explained.

“I’ve been doing it for 17 years and I’ve tried hard to keep it going, but what with COVID and everything else it just got too much.”

Ms Connor said while she was selling all the shop’s teddies and furniture – even the giant bear that graced the front window – her collection of Freddie Mercury memorabilia, amassed as she worked her way to becoming the Guinness World Record holder for the highest number of times watching a film in a cinema (she saw Bohemian Rhapsody 108 times, and has since

Having amassed so many memories – from serving her first high tea in the Cominos Arcade, to tea last year with Freddie Mercury tribute performer Thomas Crane and her last high tea in November commemorating the anniversary of Mercury’s death, there is one thing Ms Connor will miss most of all. “It’s the customers – when they come in and share where in England they’re from or have been – it’s so nice to have a chat with somebody who knows where you’re talking about.”

Iconic musical to wow audiences STORY ASHLEIGH HOWARTH ONE of the world’s longestrunning musicals will be thrust back into the spotlight for Moreton Bay residents to enjoy this February.

A cast of actors and musicians, under the guidance of producers Lynch and Paterson, will perform their rendition of the hit stage production Les Misérables at Redcliffe Entertainment Centre from February 18-27.

North Lakes’ Lucas D. Lynch is one half of Lynch and Paterson producers – a production company he formed a decade ago with friend Samantha Paterson, whom he met at Redcliffe Entertainment Centre.

With a cast of 27 actors from across South East Queensland, Mr Lynch said Les Misérables would be a “ripper of a show”.

“The soundtrack to Les Misérables is such an unbelievable score, and having a 20-piece orchestra there instead of playing a background track just adds that little extra something to the performance,” Mr Lynch said.

“I will be conducting the orchestra on the night, and I want the music to sink into people’s soul, right

from the first note to the very last.”

Set against the backdrop of 19th-century France, amidst the French Revolution, this timeless story of intertwined destinies reveals the power of compassion and the quiet evil of indifference to human suffering.

Mr Lynch is hoping for a big turnout at each show.

“The Redcliffe Entertainment Centre is one of our favourite venues to perform at, which is why we keep coming back,” he said. “We love the Moreton Bay crowds because they are wonderful people and great patrons of the arts.”

FAMILIES struggling financially to buy back-to-school supplies are receiving a helping hand thanks to a Moreton Bay organisation.

Volunteers from Stationery Aid at Ferny Hills have spent countless hours packing boxes full of essential items disadvantaged children will need when term one begins on February 7.

More than 250 families from the Moreton Bay Region, Brisbane and Mackay will receive packs of education resources to kickstart their learning.

Stationery Aid Co-founder Alison Schutt said she and her team had worked hard to sort through the thousands of donations they received.

“We collect excess used and unused school stationary that is in good working condition and we sort through them and clean them to the highest possible standard so they can be donated in booklist packs and stationery packs for the new school year,” Ms Schutt said.

Inside the packs are items such as exercise books, textbooks, pens, pencils, erasers, rulers, sharpeners, highlighters, glue, folders, book covers, art supplies, calculators, musical instruments, headphones and more.

Stationery Aid works with schools and chaplains to determine where the packages are needed the most.

“We work with Scripture Union and the chaplains identify the students who are in need,” she said.

Stationery Aid also receives calls from organisations such as The Salvation Army and Variety Queensland, who have families experiencing hardship.

Kicking goals at school Dakabin State High School’s Billie-Lee Boudar was presented with a prestigious award by Ali Brigginshaw and Scott Prince.

DAKABIN State High School student Billie-Lee Boudar has been honoured with a prestigious award recognising her dedication to education and strong cultural leadership.

Billie-Lee, who completed Year 11 last year, is among a new generation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women reconnecting to culture and kicking academic goals.

A Beyond the Broncos Girls Academy student, Billie-Lee received an NRMA Insurance Student Award, which also recognises her high attendance rate at school.

Linking cultural identity with academic achievement, more than 390 students across the region were enrolled in last year’s Beyond the Broncos Girls

Academy, which aims to inspire, empower and assist Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander girls with educational opportunities.

Billie-Lee was presented with her NRMA Insurance trophy by sporting stars Ali Brigginshaw and Scott Prince at a special Girls Academy event.

More than 200 young Indigenous students graduated from last year’s program across Queensland and northern NSW. The Academy mentors and supports girls in Years 7-12 and into young adulthood to help them succeed as young leaders.

Beyond the Broncos ambassador Ali Brigginshaw said she was thrilled to present the Billie-Lee with her award.

“Billie-Lee possesses strong

cultural leadership and has become a confidant to her younger peers, becoming someone they come to for guidance and advice,” Ms Brigginshaw said.

“Always trying her hardest to overcome obstacles to complete school and finish her optometry traineeship, Billie-Lee’s positive attitude always shines to all who meet her.

“She assists with cultural events and programs, continuing to become more actively engaged within the community.

“Billie-Lee has achieved more than 90 per cent school attendance, portrayed a positive attitude to her education, been actively involved in the program and demonstrated strong cultural leadership.”

KIPPA-Ring State School, and the Gambling Communities Benefit Fund have come together to keep pupils cool on scorching summer days.

The school hall now has two new 12-foot ceiling fans valued at more than $18,000.

Its P&C and community worked together to secure a grant from the fund and provided by the State Government to pay for the upgrade.

Principal Kerri McGrath said the fans would make a big difference.

“Our children utilise this hall for so many things throughout the year, including PE, band practice, deadly maths challenge days, school assemblies, free Friday playgroup sessions, and not to mention our fantastic Under 8s Day where we open up our school and provide a fun morning to all of the young children and parents on the peninsula,” Ms McGrath said.

Installation of airconditioning in all classrooms is expected to be finished by the time school goes back this year.

THEY look like they are straight out of a sci-fi movie and from another planet, but Venus flytraps are among Earth’s most clever plants.

The experts at Bunnings have put together a guide for growing these carnivorous plants which are experts in evolution.

Most have evolved to survive in situations where soil holds little or no nutrition, making their own food by catching and decomposing small insects.

Venus flytraps are perhaps among the most fascinating of the carnivorous plants, and they are surprisingly easy to grow.

They are very low-growing herbaceous perennials. That means the plants die back in winter and have unusual leaves.

The leaves have two distinct

sections – the horizontal leaf and the upright trap on the end.

The plant will also produce leaves of different forms at different times of the year, so do not be surprised to see your plant go through a range of changes as it grows.

The leaves shoot from an underground bulb-like structure.

As the weather becomes cooler, the leaves shrivel up and turn black. Many people think they have killed their flytrap at this stage, but it is just going into its winter dormancy and will reshoot in spring.

The trap is an ingenious mechanism. Tiny hairs trigger the trap to close when an insect brushes against them, trapping the insect inside. The insect is then dissolved by digestive juices emitted by the trap, reducing it to liquid fertiliser.

To trigger the trap, two hairs need to be touched within 20 seconds of each other. Then, when the trap closes, the hairs need to be triggered five more times for the digestive cycle to start.

HOW TO GROW A VENUS FLYTRAP

The plant must have at least four hours of direct sun daily to grow and colour well. In very hot conditions, it may need to be watched carefully and given some afternoon sun protection.

If the plant is indoors, position it on a windowsill that receives sun all day.

Your plant must be kept moist, not wet. It will need to have a cool period during its winter dormancy. Do not water your flytrap from the top – stand it in a small saucer of water instead.

If you are not growing the plant for seed, cut flower stems off as soon as they appear. The plant uses a lot of energy to flower, meaning the traps will be smaller.

As tempting as it may be, do not trigger the traps for fun.

Closing the trap uses a lot of energy, and each trap can only close 3–5 times.

Do not feed your Venus flytrap with fertiliser. It gets all the nutrition it requires from catching and digesting bugs.

But if your plant is indoors, you may have to manually feed it small insects to keep it healthy.

RE-POTTING A VENUS FLYTRAP

A Venus flytrap usually grows in damp, slightly acid soil.

When it comes time to re-pot, experts recommend a variety

of complicated DIY blends, but you can just use straight peat moss.

The most important thing to remember is to avoid using material that contains extra fertilisers, and do not add any as they will kill the plant.

When selecting a pot, go for something that has good depth to allow for downward root development.

Older, healthy plants will produce ‘pup’ plants around their base. Carefully separate the pups when re-potting and place in a suitable mix.

How the mill shaped a community STORY KYLIE KNIGHT PETRIE as we know it, could have been vastly different if the Petrie Mill had not come to town.

North Pine Historical Society president Judy Dohle said the township flourished because of the mill, which built homes and had a hand in the development of Lake Kurwongbah and the Pine Rivers Fire Station.

“The whole of Pine, after World War II, was dead up until then. Petrie grew in population and people did come up and move in to get

jobs,” Mrs Dohle said.

Back then, Petrie was a small township with about 20 houses, a railway station, post office, small school, two churches, general store, baker, butcher, school of arts hall, a hotel and two bank agencies.

By 1952, when the foundations were being laid at the mill, 60 company houses and a single men’s hostel for 40 men had been constructed. The APM sports oval was also built at this time, using spoil excavated for the mill’s foundations.

But many do not realise,

the whole operation could have been built at Eagle Farm, instead of Petrie. In 1946, Australian Paper Manufacturers Ltd’s Managing Director Sir Herbert Gepp appointed Gus Gehrmann to buy land for a new mill under the guise of the top-secret ‘Operation Moo Cow’.

He identified two potential sites – one at Eagle Farm and the other at Petrie.

Weighing up the cost of building in the city versus the country, and taking into consideration the potential of expansion, Gepp decided on Petrie. The

site was about 250ha and was occupied by two dairy farms. The mill’s construction started in 1951 but stopped in 1952 due to a recession gripping Australia.

When conditions improved in 1955, it recommenced with gusto. The mill was officially opened on December 6, 1957, by Prime Minister Robert Menzies. He was accompanied by his wife Dame Pattie Menzies and other guests included Premier Frank Nicklin and APM Chairman of Directors E. Telford Simpson.

For more than 50 years, the mill was known for its ‘Petrie spirit’ and sense of community. From its construction to closure, it employed about 5000 people.

At its peak in the early 1960s, it had a staff of more than 500. In its final year of operation, it employed 222.

The mill operated around the clock, with three eighthour shifts. It never needed to advertise for workers because when vacancies became available, they were filled by family members or friends of workers.

“Just about everyone that

lived in Pine Rivers had a relative or member of the family that worked at the mill,” Mrs Dohle recalled.

Her father, husband, brothers and other members of the extended family worked there. In 1986, APM was renamed Amcor and the following year the mill celebrated 30 years of operation. The company announced the closure of the mill in February 2013, with production ceasing on September 6, after 56 years of continuous production.

G'DAY all, Find the bait and you'll find the fish. Find the birds and you'll find the fish.

One of the easiest ways to find bait schools is to look for the seabirds circling above and diving down to snatch up an unlucky baitfish. Feeding birds can be seen from quite long distances away, therefore making locating activity much easier. Once you get closer, you'll hopefully see white water from feeding fish as they break the surface.

While these scenarios appear chaotic, the fish beneath the surface are nearly always working together to keep the panicked baitfish packed tightly together and in one school. A common mistake anglers make when they find this happening is to roar the boat into the middle of the feeding frenzy and begin casting, only to find the action immediately stop and the dozens, (sometimes hundreds), of savagely feeding fish, disappear leaving only empty seas because the boat has broken up the bait school.

To maximise your chances at connecting to a fish in these situations, stay off the school and cast to the edges of the baitball or feeding area.

This presents as a straggler separated from the safety in numbers security of the school.

And don't be shy about letting your offering sink prior to retrieval. While we're looking at all the surface action, fish are working at surprising depths beneath. Water depth permitting, predators can be five or six meters, (and deeper), below what we're seeing on the surface.

Fishing and Boating

There's a huge amount of coordination and activity going on down there. Trying to keep a lid on our excitement can be difficult when the surface is being smashed to foam, baitfish are showering from the water and the birds are adding their antics into the mix, but if we can think calmly and visualise what's going on underneath what we're looking at, we markedly increase our chances of presenting an offering that will be accepted.

FISHING REPORT • Rivers and creeks have been producing prawns and a few are just starting to appear with some increased consistency outside the mouths and the bays.

• The odd Threadfin Salmon being caught and they should be haunting the prawn once they start to increase in numbers.

• Summer whiting are still patchy but the results are there for those willing to put in the time and cover the ground with some quality fish being caught when the schools can be located.

• Flathead still consistent around the Redcliffe peninsula.

• Once again, squire and snapper on the inshores, off the rocky points and the occasional fish off the jetties up to the mid 50cm mark.

• A few schools of mackerel seen feeding in Bramble Bay this week and also starting to reappear off the inshore reefs, jetties and also further afield in the bay for the boaties. Spotties in numbers shouldn't be too far away.

• Mangrove Jack in the canals and the rivers and creeks.

• Several very nice land-based Jewfish caught in Bramble Bay and the same with Cobia.

• Mud and sand crabs in Bramble Bay, Deception Bay and in the rivers and creeks.

OUR coastlines are always changing naturally, particularly near surf bars. It is part of what makes our coastline unique.

There are plenty of places that I grew up fishing on Moreton and North Stradbroke Islands that simply no longer exist.

Coastlines can change rapidly in response to heavy weather.

Last year, Bribie Island broke through opposite Golden Beach, but the opening proved to be short-lived.

Spring tides in combination with swells from ex-tropical cyclone Seth have resulted in a breakthrough in the same area and a permanent North and South Bribie Island is now a distinct reality. It was always a question of not if – but when. Previous research by QUT identified that during the past 60 years, the eastern shoreline of the northern part of Bribie Island has retreated landward by approximately 75m. There are also several other potential locations on (south) Bribie Island where further breakthroughs may occur.

Pumicestone Passage itself is relatively young in geological terms and was formed when a river valley that was fed by Elimbah, Bullock and Ningi Creeks was flooded by the rising sea. Since its formation, Pumicestone Passage has been becoming generally shallower as sediment comes in from the various creeks as well as well as from Moreton Bay and the ocean.

The new breakthrough if it remains open is likely to have several impacts on Pumicestone Passage including to the mainland shoreline directly

adjacent to it. The potential impacts are highly unlikely to be catastrophic and impacts to property and infrastructure should be able to be managed.

Pumicestone Passage will still exist, but parts of it will just be a little different.

An earlier modelling report by the Pumicestone Passage Advisory Taskforce identified the types of impacts from the type of breakthrough that has occurred.

These include enhanced sanding up of the existing Caloundra bar and the area directly around it, increased tidal range between Golden Beach and Halls Creek, and increased wave activity in the passage directly adjacent to the new entrance.

In terms of fish and fish habitats, there are likely to be changes in the distribution of seagrass in Pumicestone Passage and this may impact the distribution of juvenile fish.

Shoreline erosion may result in some areas causing more trees to fall into the water which may provide some additional fish habitat. Some coffee rock may be exposed which is great habitat for many species. More sandy shoals are likely to form in and around the new entrance.

Time will tell whether the new breakthrough will remain open, but long-term modelling has always predicted ongoing erosion that will lead to a new entrance forming.

Young talent key to Dolphins’ NRL success STORY KYLIE KNIGHT PLAYER pathways specialist Kurt Richards is heading up a team at the Dolphins working with 12 junior clubs to identify and nurture emerging players.

Richards says it’s not about building a ‘super club’ at Dolphins, instead encouraging rising stars to continue playing at their local club, with their mates, while being part of the Dolphins Pathways Program.

It aims to nurture players from juniors all the way through to NRL, complementing Wayne Bennett’s NRL program in 2023.

Bennett’s passion for implementing such a system has been evident from the moment he took on the top job at the club and is shared by Richards, who has been involved in player

development for 20 years.

It’s a journey that he started as a teacher at famed rugby league school Keebra Park High.

He spent 13 years at the Brisbane Broncos, including a stint as assistant coach of the NRL team.

Along the way he has been a vital part of the Queensland Emerging Origin program, coaching the Queensland under-16s and under-18s, and is the Maroons’ current under-19s coach.

“The pathway program is about developing local players and giving them the opportunity to progress right through the academy pathway to play NRL here at home for the Dolphins,” Richards said.

“But we also want to clear up the misconception that you have to be playing with Redcliffe to be part of the

“We encourage players in the local community that play for Burpengary or play for North Lakes or Albany Creek to stay and play with their mates. There is a pathway here and you never know when your opportunity will come.”

In mid-December, the Dolphins held their first Junior Dolphins Camp for under-14s players across two days.

“We assembled what our recruitment staff considered to be the 15 best players from around the state with a large focus on the local area,” Richards said.

Of the six local boys, three were part of the under-15 Moreton Bay Raiders side – aged 14 years, playing up – which won the Division 1 premiership last year.

The aim was to connect with junior clubs, show

them what the Dolphins are all about and identify talent for a new academy.

The Dolphins Academy will be made up of 15 and 16-year-olds, with 10-12 players contracted initially.

Four local juniors have already been invited to join as a result of their performances at the camp and others are expected to be signed soon.

Underneath that will be opportunities for players to be involved in Dolphins Squads, but not everyone has to play for Redcliffe.

“We want them to play for their local clubs but there will be the opportunity to play in a team environment with the under-16 Cyril Connell Cup and under-18 Mal Meninga Cup,” Richards said.

He said the camp enabled the Dolphins to prove they had good, experienced people ready to guide and support other clubs and emerging talent.

“There were a few from outside the area, like me, but also people who have been part of the Dolphins for a long time like Mick Roberts (200+ games for the Dolphins), former coach John Dixon, Dolphins strength and conditioning coach Gerard Parle and two local coaches − Barry Berrigan from Redcliffe and Larry Dickson from the Moreton Bay Raiders team,” he said.

Richards said building relationships with junior clubs was key to the academy’s success and the academy would also work closely with clubs and schools to help young players map out a ‘plan b’, because injury and other obstacles can quickly dash an NRL dream.

Performances on the field are just part of the focus, with a strong social, education and wellbeing component as well to help young players make good decisions.

There’s also the opportunity to work with one of the best coaches of all time – Wayne Bennett.

He said dual international and former Maroon Ben Te’o would also be a positive role model, with plenty of life experience to share.

Cam lands US tour record STORY NICK CROCKFORD CAMERON Smith, who worked at Redcliffe RSL as a teenager, achieved one of his major goals for 2022 just 10 days into the new year.

The 28-year-old, pictured, was the talk of the golf world after winning the Sentry Tournament of Champions with a US PGA Tour record 34 under par.

Former Bray Park resident Smith beat world number one Jon Rahm by one shot in a thrilling headto-head battle over the final 18 holes in Hawaii at the start of this month.

A 1m putt on the final green earned Smith US$1.476 million and lifted him 11 places into the world’s top 10 for the first time.

John Victorsen, the professional at Wantima, said it was Smith’s “greatest win”.

Ken McKay, founder of the Cameron Smith Junior Classic, said “when it’s effectively head-to-head, in a match-play situation, he’s unstoppable”.

Smith, who learned to play and is still a member at Wantima Country Club in Brendale, said on pga-

tour.com: “That was one of my goals this year to get into the top 10. It’s nice that’s done and dusted now hopefully I can keep cruising up those world rankings.

“One of the big goals is to make it to Atlanta for the Tour Championship (for the top 30 money-winners). And I definitely want to be on the Presidents Cup team.”

He was also partnered by Hollywood A-lister Mark Walhberg in the pro-am before the Sony Open in

Honolulu two weeks ago, but missed the cut in the tournament itself and the world ranking slipped to 11. His next outing is at the Saudi International from February 3-6.

“It’s an evolution,” said Grant Field, who has coached Smith since he was 10, “Now I think it’s confidence being on the world stage and familiarity with courses.”

Field, who is based on the Sunshine Coast, coaches his star pupil using videos and live streaming from the driving ranges Smith uses in the States.

SWIMMERS from across the region are gearing up for the Brisbane Sprint Championships which start on Saturday.

The titles, at Brisbane Aquatic Centre, are a qualifier for the Queensland Sprints two weeks later.

The North Lakes resident finished 2021 in fine form making five of six finals in the 13 Years age group at last month’s Queensland State Championships with four personal best times.

Power then travel to longtime rivals Lions on Friday March 4, before hosting Gold Coast Knights at AJ Kelly Park on March 12.

The pre-season started at FQPL3 side Pine Hills last week, with Power fielding a mixture of seniors and Under 23 and winning 11-0.

Power’s FQPL1 women are back in pre-season training and have matches against Broadbeach (FQPL2), Gold Coast United (NPLW) and Logan Lightning (FQPL1) linedup. Dates and times to be announced.

The FQPL1 season starts at AJ Kelly Park on March 18 against Virginia and then go to Western Pride on March 26.

Ali Schaefer has returned to add experience to the squad and in a major boost coach Alex Smith has committed to the role for another three years.

RHYS Tappenden is quadriplegic, but that did not stop him competing in three triathlons last year – with considerable success.

The Margate resident took a huge slice off his first time in the cycling and is now aiming to do more triathlons in 2022.

Tappenden started his “fitness journey” in 2020, during the COVID-19 lockdown, to keep weight down and “refocus on himself”.

The 45-year-old built up strength and understanding of nutrition with support from the NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme).

“I started going to the gym, got up to two days a week, but I didn’t want to go three, because it could get boring,” he said. “So, I thought, what are we going to do?

“We added some cardio and pushing in my day chair but wanted to get faster. I got my old hand cycle out I bought years ago and started – three minutes on and three minutes off.

“Then my exercise physiologist asked me if I wanted to do the Moreton Bay Triathlon? We only had three months to train and I did the cycle in just under three hours.”

Tappenden entered the Noosa Triathlon and a second Moreton Bay Triathlon, taking 20 minutes off his original time.

For many years I was lost, then I got NDIS funding “For this year’s Noosa Triathlon I did the hand cycle part, which is 40km and it took me around two hours and 40 minutes – I really want to get that down to two hours,” he said.

“I was 105kg and now I’m back to 95kg, which is about the weight I was before my accident; my goal is to definitely fall inside the 80kg.

“For many years I was sort of lost, but then I got NDIS funding allowing me to access an exercise physiologist, who has become a good friend.”

However, Mr Tappenden hasn’t forgotten his first goal of sit-down snow skiing.

“I’d love to go to Thredbo or Perisher.

I used to do all that snowboarding back in the day.”

He had help in applying for NDIS funding from Carers Queensland’s NDIS Local Area Coordination Partner in the Community Program for the Moreton Bay region.

PENINSULA will be aiming to start the new year on a winning note when they resume against Coorparoo in the Community Cricket Championship at Filmer Park on Saturday.

NORTH Lakes’ Ryan Suhle will be hoping for better luck in the 2022 Porsche Paynter Dixon Carrera Cup this year.

The Porsche Sprint Challenge was suspended after two rounds last year due to COVID travel restrictions.

At that stage Suhle led the Mobil Pro standings by 26 points, sitting on 284, after rounds in Sydney and Phillip Island.

The 2022 calendar of races has been released with the Carrera Cup starting at the Formula 1 Grand Prix meeting in Melbourne on April 8-10.

The seven rounds which follow the grand prix meeting will be: Round 2 Darwin, June 17-19; Rd 3 Townsville, July 8-10; Rd 4 The Bend, South Australia July 29-31; Rd 5 Sandown, Victoria, August 19-21; Rd 6 Bathurst 1000, October 6-9; Rd 7 Gold Coast, Oct 28-30; Rd 8 Sydney, Nov 18-20.

Ryan Suhle has also secured sponsorship from SP Tool to run in the Carrera Cup.

SHAUN Richardson, the Redcliffe-based driver, will just be racing cars, not Super Trucks, this year.

Richardson had been a fixture in the Super Trucks series, which last year had three rounds before COVID restrictions intervened.

Super Trucks are not racing in Australia this year, but Richardson plans to race at Longbeach, California for a Stadium Super Trucks event.

He will now focus on the ARG Series and TA2 Racing Muscle Car events.

“If I make the finals … that would be huge, but (the trip) will definitely help my game in terms of experience.”

Hands will play in the Queensland Minors tournament at Calamvale next month before going to Sheffield, home of the WPBSA World Championships at the Crucible since 1977, in February.

Both tournaments are at the Ding Junhui Snooker Academy – the Junior titles from February 15-19 and World Championship on February 20-26.

“My goal is to go professional,” Hands said, “I like Ronnie, he’s a potting machine and Neil – he went the same way (to being a professional) as I hope to.”

Verbal sparring starts before Aussie title clash THE war of words is under way for what may be the biggest fight in Australian boxing this year.

Isaac Hardman – born in Redcliffe, raised in Deception Bay and Caboolture, now living at Bald Hills – will take on Michael Zerafa on Wednesday April 4.

The venue has yet to be officially announced, but the fight could be a stepping stone to a world title shot.

Hardman is ranked eight in the world by the IBF (International Boxing Federation) and could move up to second if he beats Zerafa.

“I think everyone here knows what’s next, I’m going to smash that Michael Zerafa,” Hardman, said after stopping Adam Stowe in four rounds last month.

Zerafa countered in an Australian Boxing Central interview saying: “I just want to go out there and

knock him out and put it all to rest. Skills pay the bills and he’s got none of that.”

However, 26-year-old Hardman is undefeated in 12 professional fights with only two going the distance.

Zerafa, 29 and from Melbourne, holds the WBA Oceania Middleweight and WBO Oriental Middleweight titles.

After his latest fight just before Christmas, Zerafa’s

professional record moved to 29 wins from 33 professional fights.

The fight reward for the “massive risk” Hardman took against Stowe, knowing one punch could derail his world title hopes.

He said before the fight: “I’m in the conversation of having world title fights.

The teenager from North Lakes is practicing hard for a trip to the UK city of Sheffield – the spiritual home of world snooker – next month.

Hands, 16, is one of four Australians in the World Snooker Federation (WSF) Junior (Under 18) Championships and WSF World Championships.

PENINSULA Power continue their 2022 pre-season fixtures on Friday when they head south to face Newcastle Olympic from the Northern NSW NPL. The match is at Gold Coast Knights’ Croatian Sports Centre ground, kick-off 6pm.
