Busi course a massive boost CHRISTMAS came early for Clontarf’s Rachel Pattel, who has landed her first job since leaving high school. Ms Pattel is a recent graduate of Deception Bay Community Youth Programs’ Business and Events course. She credits the Busi Events course, during which she completed a Certificate I in Business traineeship, with helping her find work. “It really helped build my skills and my confidence,” Ms Pattel said. As well as learning office skills and administration, the course involved participants working with Moreton Bay Region Industry and Tourism to deliver major events such as KiteFest, Jetty2Jetty and a comedy festival. Ms Pattel graduated from Redcliffe State High School in 2015 and said she struggled to find work, hampered by employers wanting experience. “I graduated from high school and I couldn’t afford to go to TAFE, so I was really stuck,” she said. Busi events co-ordinator Pina Asekona said Ms Pattel’s story was a common one, and the course

equipped students with real-world skills, as well as ongoing support, to help them gain employment. “As well as learning at external events, we get them to run inhouse events like our Father’s Day barbecue and a Halloween disco,” Ms Asekona said. “We give them a budget and they have to plan the event and learn how to budget and prioritise.” Ms Asekona said Ms Pat-
tel was an outstanding student who showed great commitment to the course. “Rachel had 100 percent attendance and caught two buses to get here every day,” she said. “One of the best things is seeing the women start here all shy and nervous and then seeing the friendships they make and them supporting each other and empowering each other.” Ms Pattel said she was
thrilled to gain a position at Emerald Training College at Scarborough, where she will also have the opportunity to complete a Certificate 3 in business. “They rang me back within two hours of the interview,” she said. “As someone who was not qualified in anything six months ago, that felt great.” Visit dbcyp.org.au

Plan for golf course site hits a snag STORY NICK CROCKFFORD AN APPLICATION to “vary” a development control plan enabling the construction of a retirement village and aged care facility on North Lakes golf course land has been rejected “in its current form”. The application, made on October 19 to Moreton Bay Regional Council by JH Northlakes Pty Ltd, sought a “variation request” to the Mango Hill Infrastructure Development Control Plan (Mango Hill DCP). It also included graphic illustrations of the pro-

Drone arena taking flight A UNIQUE games arena and training centre is capturing the imaginations of drone novices and enthusiasts. The brainchild of aircraft engineer Darren Stone, Drone-Games is billed as the first of its kind in the world. Drone-Games was originally a mobile business, visiting schools and other venues with pop-up nets to contain the drones, but Mr Stone was determined to create a more permanent base. It had its major launch at Redcliffe KiteFest, where more than 700 people immersed themselves in drone activations on day one. His introduction to drones came when clients of his asset management business, Asset Excellence, began asking if he could conduct inspections of assets in complicated and restricted areas with drones. Mr Stone saw the potential and also discovered there were many safety aspects to flying drones – even for amateurs. He said while the games were fun, the venue is also a great way to teach people about flying drones safely. “There’s a lot of safety

“The applicant has been advised that Council is of the view that the development application cannot be accepted in its current form. “The applicant has been provided with correspondence outlining the legal and technical reasons for this decision. “Council will now await a response from the applicant.” A spokesman for The Village Retirement Group said: “TVRG has been advised by Council regarding the application’s status. “We expect to resolve the issue to ensure that the ap-
plication is properly made in accordance with the legislation.” A spokesperson for Save North Lakes Golf Course (SNLGC) said: “We welcome the decision from Council today that the development application submitted by the developer in it’s current form is actually not able to be made. “This aligns with our position from day one. We will continue to remain vigilant to ensure that the green central corridor of North Lakes remains as intended.” Council’s response to the variation request said un-

The drones are fitted with propeller guards so they cannot get snagged in each arena’s netting cage. Mr Stone said DroneGames would initially have three clubs – and engineering/technology club, a racing club and a games club – and will have BYO-drone
der the Moreton Bay Regional Council Planning Scheme 2016, the Mango Hill DCP was “applied or adopted, but not incorporated” into the scheme. Therefore the application to vary the Mango Hill DCP cannot be made “as a matter of law” as the Mango Hill DCP is not incorporated into the planning scheme or a “planning scheme in its own right”. Council’s decision also added: “Because the Mango Hill DCP is not a local planning instrument, it cannot be varied by a variation request”.

Drone-Games is working with educator and innovator Dr Irena Yashin-Shaw, who is developing a curriculum for corporate training incorporating drones, which will take place in a specially de-
signed meeting space. “It will be great for building teams – they will be given a problem to solve, and then fly the drones to see if their solution works – then they can come back in and refine it,” Mr Stone said. He wants the arena to be all-inclusive and has installed accessible toilets.
“When we were at KiteFest we noticed there were so many people with disabilities and we saw the smiles on their faces with the drones,” he said. “Our facilities cater for people with disabilities – they can’t get hurt and if the drones crash it doesn’t matter.”
WORK is well underway on stage one of the new $5m upgrade to the approach to Bunnings and Costco at North Lakes. A new concrete pathway from Diamond Jubilee Way to Cook Ct has been completed and, with good weather, this stage of the project will be finished by Christmas. Stage one works include a new turning lane from Diamond Jubilee Way onto Flinders Pde, lighting upgrades, new bicycle and pram ramps, and three new signalised pedestrian crossings at slip lanes to improve pedestrian safety. The entire project will overhaul the current traffic issues at the intersections of Flinders Pde, Diamond Jubilee Way, Cook Ct and Torres Cr. Stage two will include signals at Cook Ct and Torres Cr, building a roundabout and more right-turn capacity to access Flinders Pde from Diamond Jubilee Way. The upgrades have been supported with $1.3 million from the Federal Government and Member for Petrie Luke Howarth.

Lighting up the region this
STORY KYLIE KNIGHT RESIDENTS will go head-to-head in a lights display of epic proportions during the inaugural Moreton Daily Christmas Lights in Moreton Bay Region competition. Nominations are now open for the competition, which has a prize pool of $24,000, and close on December 5. It’s free to enter. Displays must be within the Moreton Bay Region and visible from 7-9.30pm every night during the judging period, December 6-19. The competition is brought to you by Moreton Daily with the support of sponsors Ausbuild, Slater + Gordon Lawyers and USC, along with media partners Nine News and Brisbane Kids. Moreton Bay Region Industry and Tourism (MBRIT) Chairman Shane Newcombe, publisher of Moreton Daily, said the region had been crying out for its own competition and he was thrilled it was happening this year. “We want to light up the region and bring smiles to faces, young and old, after what has been a challenging year for
many,” Mr Newcombe said. “There are so many displays each year across the region deserving of recognition, from family homes to apartment blocks and businesses. We want to shine a light on their efforts and give them the chance to win not only bragging rights but generous cash prizes. “The competition will also make it easier for residents and visitors to the region who want to take a tour of the best displays, with an interactive map on our website. “They can also vote for their favourite in our People’s Choice category for the chance to win $1000, thanks to USC.” The People’s Choice voting and judging period opens on December 6 and closes on December 19. The winners of all categories will be announced at Pine Rivers Carols on December 19. Mr Newcombe is urging residents and businesses across the region to join in the fun and spread some Christmas cheer this year. “It’s a bit of fun that brings joy to others and often brings communities together as neighbours and visitors pop over to check out displays and for a chat. It’s pretty special and we’re very proud to be bringing this regionwide competition to life.”

‘TIS almost the season to be jolly, with the countdown now on to Christmas in the Moreton Bay Region. So, warm up your vocal cords and get ready for four big Christmas carols events. It all starts when Moreton Daily presents Caboolture Christmas Carols on November 28 at Centenary Lakes. North Lakes Christmas Carols follows on December 5 at Kinsellas Sports Complex, with Redcliffe Christmas Carols at Moreton Daily Stadium on December 12 and Pine Rivers Christmas Carols
at Pine Rivers Park on December 19. Each event is on from 4-8pm. Entry is free and tickets are not required. Santa’s Village is returning in 2021, giving children the chance to meet the man in red (socially distanced) and take a photo. It will also feature roving entertainment, craft workshops, face-painting and children can write a letter to Santa while they are there. The carols events’ signature giant snow globes are also back, providing the perfect white Christmas
photo opportunity. Cost is $10 per group. Making their debut this year are Christmas llamas. Families can give them a pat and even have their photos taken with them. Moreton Bay Region Industry and Tourism (MBRIT) Chairman Shane Newcombe, publisher of Moreton Daily and Dolphins News, said there would be two llamas at each event thanks to the team at Ottaba Llama Walks. “The llamas will add some cheeky fun to the events this year, which we’re sure

A family photo with one of them would be a great keepsake or could even be a present for family and friends.” Bookings are not required, but photos and meet-and-greet opportunities will be on a first-in, first-served queuing basis. There will also be plenty of food trucks to purchase dinner and a stellar line-up of local artists and community groups performing
Spirit of giving shines
EMBRACE the spirit of giving at this year’s Christmas in the Moreton Bay Region signature carols events by placing a present under the Charity Donation Tree for those who need a little extra Christmas cheer this year. The carols have partnered with four charities from across the Moreton Bay Region to help those in need. A donation tree will be placed at each of the four signature carols events and those attending are being encouraged to leave
a gift that will be treasured by a family doing it tough. Moreton Bay Region Industry and Tourism Chairman Shane Newcombe said a small gift could go a long way in making Christmas brighter. “For many in our community, 2021 has been a tough year. Community groups across the region are telling us the need is greater than ever, so we’re pleased to be able to assist by mobilising the community at our four big carols events,” Mr Newcombe said. “Most people want to help
in some way and the donation tree makes it easy for them to make a small, but heartfelt gesture. “We hope those who receive the gifts will feel the warmth of that gesture as they open them on Christmas Day. “We welcome and encourage gifts for all ages, particularly children aged 0-12 years.” The charities Moreton Daily has partnered with are Caboolture Community Action, North Lakes Uniting Church, Redcliffe Care Network and Pine Rivers Uniting Church.

DIVISION 7 CANDIDATES IN BALLOT ORDER STORY JODIE POWELL
CANDIDATES in the upcoming Moreton Bay Region Council by-election will have the opportunity to address the community with a live-streamed forum on December 1. Hosted by Moreton Daily News South editor Jodie Powell, the forum will give candidates the chance to outline why they should be elected and answer questions submitted by ratepayers in Division 7. At last week’s Moreton Bay Regional Council meeting, Council chief executive officer Greg Chemello said he believed there would be merit in hosting a candidate ses-

sion, and has accepted the offer from new community newspaper Moreton Daily News to host and moderate. “It’s important to give the residents of Division 7 the chance to listen to the folks who want to be their councillor,” Mr Chemello said. Moreton Bay Region Industry and Tourism (MBRIT) Chairman Shane Newcombe, publisher of Moreton Daily News, said the forum was an important opportunity for residents to put questions to candidates to help them decide who will earn their vote. “Democracy is a two-way street and this will give ratepayers another way of engaging with prospective councillors,” Mr New-
combe said. “This by-election is a first for Moreton Bay and it’s great to see so much interest from people wanting to represent Division 7.” The by-election is the result of the resignation of Division 7 councillor and Deputy Mayor Denise Sims on October 20. Ms Sims made the announcement on social media the previous night in an emotional video statement citing personal health reasons for her decision. Mayor Peter Flannery said he trusted voters to make the right decision. “There are a range of candidates which is great, because that means locals get to make a real choice based on the fresh ideas candi-

dates put forward,” he said. “The cohesion we’ve achieved as a Council has been critical to our region’s success through the pandemic, so we need a team player who has the interests of Moreton Bay at heart. “But that decision rests with the residents of Dakabin, Murrumba Downs, Kallangur and Griffin – and I trust them to get this one right. “So, I hope to see North Leagues Club packed with people who want to hear from all their potential representatives. “What I’ll be telling the successful candidate is that politics isn’t about any individual or their ego, it’s about hard work and ser-
vice to the community.” “This moment in time is an important crossroads for Moreton Bay, as we put the pandemic behind us, aspire to give the world the greatest Olympic Games they’ve ever seen and ramp-up our investments into green initiatives and lifestyle infrastructure.” Polling day for the by-election will be on Saturday, December 4, with applications for postal voting closing at 7pm on Monday, November 22. Early voting runs for two weeks from November 22 until Friday, December 3. Remove temptation for thieves
Police and emergency services were on hand at Bunnings during Crime Prevention Week to offer safety tips. STORY JODIE POWELL THE spotlight was on helping residents make their homes safer when Rothwell Bunnings staged its annual Crime Prevention week last week. Moreton Bay Region police and emergency services visited the store to help raise
awareness about simple steps people could take to reduce their chance of becoming a victim of crime. District crime prevention co-ordinator Sergeant Sarah Grayson said there were many free and low-cost actions people could take. “Obviously Bunnings stock lots of different
supplies in terms of home security and safety,” Sgt Grayson said. “This provides us with a great opportunity to promote crime prevention from our point of view.” Sgt Grayson said vehicle crimes continued to be an issue, with opportunistic thieves breaking in to
homes to steal car keys. “People might leave their garage door open while they go back into the house to the loo. It only takes a minute or two, but that’s enough for a thief – it only takes a second for people to get in and take your keys. “You need to ensure your garage door is closed, even
if you’re only gone for a few minutes.” Sgt Grayson said police encouraged people to be security-aware and remove temptation for opportunistic thieves. “I know people should not be stealing from other people, but let’s make it as hard as possible. We all
work hard for the things we have,” she said. As well as removing temptation, residents could install motion-sensor lighting and security cameras. “You can get some really good, costeffective cameras for your house without spending thousands of dollars.”

Boost for health hub STORY JODIE POWELL A HEALTH hub serving eight primary schools on the Redcliffe Peninsula has welcomed its first GP. Dr Melita Cullen started at the Health and Wellbeing Hub, based at Hercules Road State School, this month. Hub project officer Gayle Wetzel Fitzgerald said the service had gone from strength to strength since officially launching this year, with families visiting its health nurse and early intervention clinician, and having a GP on site would add another dimension. “Dr Cullen sees children not just from Hercules
Road, but from the peninsula’s cluster of schools and early childhood centres,” Ms Wetzel Fitzgerald said. Dr Cullen, who has a special interest in child and adolescent health, child development and primary health care for children with complex medical needs, will focus on young people with developmental concerns. While Dr Cullen’s work with patients will be by appointment, Ms Wetzel said families were welcome to drop in on Wednesday mornings from 8.30amnoon to see the health nurse and early intervention clinician.

DEAN Cameron has lost most of his sight. “The only thing I have left is a bit of light perception in my left eye,” he said. He had “low vision” from birth due to retinitis pigmentosa, for which there is no cure. But that will not stop the 52-year-old saddling up on December 5 for the Moreton Bay 100 and help raise money for Guide Dogs Queensland. He is among 400 entries for the Moreton Bay 100, but organisers are aiming for 700 and to top the $27,000 raised for Lions and Smiling for Smiddy in 2019. “I’m just supporting my club and wanting to raise money for guide dogs,”
said Cameron, who has his first Guide Dog, Viking. “I wasn’t looking for a Guide Dog because I was independent. I wanted to do things on my own and wanted someone younger to get the dog. I thought I was too old. But it’s the best thing I ever did. He’s a great mate and has changed my life. I’m more active now than I have ever been, “Guide Dogs is one of the best organisations I’ve come across. A really top organisation. So supportive, not just in the dogs, but everything else.” The Moreton Bay 100
brings cyclists, visitors, fundraising and a business boost to the region with its 22km, 60km, 100km and 167km rides open to all ages. All rides start at Woody Point, then take routes which include the waterfront at Deception Bay, Redcliffe, Sandgate and longer rides to Bunya, Dayboro, Mt Mee and D’Aguilar. “It is a community-focused event where we try and work with our local businesses and promote one another in the community,” Event Organiser Tony Williams said.

Warm welcome for Warriors, families STORY KYLIE KNIGHT THE Moreton Bay Region community could be the Warriors’ secret weapon in the NRL as players, staff and their families relish stability in their home for the next 12 months. Dolphins News chatted with CEO Cameron George about how the extended group of more than 100 people is settling in as preseason training gets underway at their new home ground, Moreton Daily Stadium. “The majority of our players are living within the M o r e t o n Bay Region, which is fantastic. There are a number that are living very close to the ground (Moreton D a i l y
Stadium) and surrounding areas,” Mr George said. “Everyone’s loving it. Anyone who drives over that bridge feels much more relaxed. I live at Margate and I’m really enjoying being a part of the community. “If away from work, you’re really stable and happy it’s always going to reflect in everything else you do in life and it’s no different for footy players and their families.” He said they had already started exploring local venues as a group. “We’re getting out and about and really experiencing the area locally and everyone’s just enjoying it,” Mr George said. “The boys are riding pushbikes to work, some are walking from their house. That is really a huge bonus to us because we’ve been living in restrictive confines for basically two years. Now, to have our own space … everyone seems to be much more relaxed and enjoying their time. “The Moreton Bay Region is beautiful. It is outstanding and if we can somehow
promote that to all Kiwis both based in Australia and New Zealand to come and visit us here it would be great for the region and the local businesses.” Many of the players’ children are now enrolled in local schools in a move Mr George said was essential to ensuring the families were settled and happy. He is grateful to the schools which have worked hard to make the transition easy. Families have found rental accommodation and a couple have even bought homes in the region. “It does, in a small way, inject some much-needed cash into the economy as well,” Mr George said. The team is already training on the field behind Moreton Daily Stadium, replicating what will happen when the Dolphins have their own NRL team. “It’s good for Redcliffe to experience the NRL operation here. We don’t always get it right but at least they’ll get an insight into how their facility operates with an NRL program in place. They
could get some learnings from that which allows them to kick off their operations in a really good state,” Mr George said. “We’re very respectful of the Dolphins and their brand-building exercise over the next 12 months, but at the same time we fill that void at the moment. We’re the second Brisbane team. You know, it’s history that a New Zealand international team’s been based here to play in the NRL.” Mr George would like nothing more than to pack their new home ground with fans from the Moreton Bay Region, backing ‘their local NRL team’ for the 2022 season. “We want the locals to walk to the ground and enjoy the atmosphere and be a part of cheering on the Warriors to be successful during our stint here,” he said. Mr George said he was grateful to the support the club had received from Moreton Bay Regional Council and the Dolphins, and he was looking forward to hosting fan events during the season.

ON THE BRIGHT SIDE
Honouring their sacrifice PHOTOS DOMINIKA LIS
VETERANS, families, leaders and the general community paused to reflect on the sacrifices made by those who have served to protect our way of life on Remembrance Day at Redcliffe’s Anzac Place. Hundreds paid their
respects at the service organised by Redcliffe RSL and learnt about the history of the commemoration. Deputy President Karen Hemers spoke about the first Remembrance Day and how the commemoration had evolved since, while also
explaining the significance of the poppy. “In a nation’s history, great events, whether in peace or war, live in our memories regardless of time,” Mrs Hemers said. “They are deemed great, not necessarily for what they
achieved nor whether they are reckoned to be victories or successes, rather great events are distinguished by the quality of human endeavour they call upon, by examples they have created for ordinary men and women. One of these events was the
first World War, 1914-1918.” Since then, Allied nations have chosen the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month to honour those who died in conflict because it was at that moment the guns fell silent on the Western Front in 1918.
CAN you feel it? I get the feeling that we’re close. We’re approaching a tipping point. A change in the climate towards climate change. The tide has turned. Even if governments are not on board, it seems the rest of us are, especially the corporate world, and that’s what’s going to matter. Yes, the warnings are still dire. Yes, the consequences might last a long time. Yes, there’s a long way to go, but I see hope, and we need that right now. Hope grows a future, fear dreads one. Let’s keep going, get on board, play our part. For our children.

Safety first for summer Get-a-Weigh THOUSANDS of people from our region will hit the road this summer, touring and towing caravans. Most will be well-prepared and have safe holidays. Sadly, some will not − and RnR Refinish often sees the damaging results. That is why planning a road trip should include a visit to the RV servicing, repairs and parts specialists, at Oasis Crt. RnR Refinish ensures you do not make simple, costly mistakes such as overloading, incorrect towing capacity and tow ball weights and uneven weight distribution. Servicing and taking advice from these experts can help avoid traffic accidents and rollovers, wheel bearing failure, tyre blowouts, brake failure, water leaks and breakdowns. “Weight distribution is especially important,” owner Rob Rasmussen said.
“Most seasoned caravaners will share horror stories they’ve experienced or witnessed where a van has become out of control quite unexpectedly. This can be caused by many reasons including passing another caravaner or large truck. “The disruption of air can be enough to start a van swaying and if the van is not loaded correctly can escalate into a bad situation very quickly.” RnR also offers a $99 Get-a-Weigh package to have your tow vehicle and caravan weighed. There is also a second Get-aWeigh special which includes a weigh, wheel alignment and chassis service. In addition to the RV repairs, RnR Refinish specialises in all areas of 4WD mechanical repairs and servicing, including the correct set-up of tow vehicles. All work is done at the RnR Refinish service centre.

CHRISTMAS fun starts at Griffin with the annual Santa Run on November 20 and culminates in the Griffin Christmas Carnival a week later. The two events, organised by Griffin State School P&C Association, bring the school, business and broader community together. President Stephen McFetridge said the Santa Run would start from the school at 9.30am and cover the majority of estates in the Griffin area during a four-hour period. Residents will have the chance to say hello to Santa, Mrs Claus and their elves. The run has been held annually since 2017, even in 2020 when the carnival had to be cancelled due to COVID-19. “The community loves it,” Mr McFetridge said. The Griffin Christmas Carnival will be held on November 27 from 3-8pm at the school, Wesley Rd, Griffin. Entry is free and there will be rides, fireworks, food and market stalls,
visit griffinchristmas.com giant snow globe, stage shows, sideshow alley, animal petting zoo and a chance to have your photo taken with Santa. Children wanting to write a letter to Santa can post it in Santa’s Mailbox, sponsored by MSN Homes, which will also be at the carnival. There will be more than 10 rides to choose from including dodgem cars, sizzler and round up as well as super slide, swinging chairs, wipe out, cup and saucer and more. Armbands are on sale now for the early-bird price of $30 until 11am, November 26. For those who do not want to buy armbands, individual ride tickets will be available. Mr McFetridge said the event, first held in 2016, had been on the school grounds since 2017 and was a great way to bring the community together. “It’s not just the school community, it’s open to whole community to come
in. We want people to be part of the Griffin community,” he said. He said it was an affordable afternoon, which was ‘family friendly and wallet-friendly’. “It’s our biggest fundraising event of the year. This does help us out and helps the kids out at the end of day,” Mr McFetridge said. The association is grateful for the support of sponsors including Deputy Premier and State Member for Murrumba Steven Miles. The other sponsors are Anytime Fitness, Griffin Community Discount Pharmacy, Elephas Education, Moreton Bay Regional Council, Brisbane North Snake Catchers and Relocation, Domino’s Murrumba Downs/ Kallangur, MSN Homes, CSC Group, Federal Member for Petrie Luke Howarth, KCL Mobile Automotive, Jim’s Fencing and Ray White Murrumba Downs. “Without them, we would not be able to hold the carnival,” Mr McFetridge said.

LIONS clubs of North Lakes and Redcliffe Central have recognised some of the youngest members of our community for their resilience, courage, kindness and tenacity. The annual Children of Courage Awards were presented by both clubs at the end of last month to a total of 18 youngsters. The North Lakes Lions Club’s awards ceremony was held at The Lakes
College on October 23, recognising eight children, four of whom manage medical and or intellectual disorders every day. The categories were Special Needs, Bravery, Sibling Recognition and Outstanding Sporting Achievement. The Lions Club of Redcliffe Central Auxiliary (formerly Lioness Club of Redcliffe Central) held its 19th annual ceremony on October 30, recognising 10 children. The recipients were nominated by their schools –
Woody Point Special School (Rodney and Zachary), Redcliffe Special School (one pupil), Hercules Road State School (Lacee Gielis), Humpybong State School (Isabelle, Narkeasha, Zanda, Jayden), and Clontarf Beach State School (Willow and Rhyder). The categories were Special Needs, Courageous Act or Deed, Sibling Recognition and Outstanding Sporting Achievement. Auxiliary President Ildi Tonkin said the Lions
Children of Courage Awards were first initiated in 1983 in Western Australia by the then District Governor Joe Mason. “The purpose of this awards ceremony was to recognise a very special group of young Western Australians and their families. At the time there were many awards that recognized the achievements of young people, however, children with ‘special needs’ were not catered for,” she said.
“Thanks to the foresight and dedication of our Lioness member Liz Alcock, who brought this project to our District, it became a project for this club in 2002. It is hoped that by receiving the award it will encourage the children to continue striving to do their best and to believe in themselves. The family also benefits from this award, by sharing in their children’s pride and by seeing the recognition given to their children.”

WHAT can you do with one packet of spaghetti and 25 marshmallows? That was the challenge issued to pupils at Bounty Boulevard State School earlier this month. YOUNG people are on the way to reaching their potential thanks to programs at Redcliffe Area Youth Space, new-found confidence and hard work. Two such programs are Checkpoint, which helps teens disengaged from mainstream education, and Work Skills, which helps those facing barriers to employment. Checkpoint Program Co-ordinator and qualified teacher Victoria Van Schie said she worked with about 15 young people aged 14-16 years to improve literacy and numeracy, boost confidence and deal with underlying issues which made it difficult for them to learn at a mainstream school. There is no defined timeframe and students can remain as long as they need to. “Some of the young people that we’ve worked

Perfect blend for a cause STORY KYLIE KNIGHT
HOW TO ORDER
NELI Coffee has teamed up with a Queensland coffee grower and a local Aboriginal artist to create a limited coffee in time for Christmas that will help Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth. The idea was brewed earlier this year when longtime friends Neli Coffee owner Ed Thomas and artist Kevin Pearson caught up for coffee. Mr Thomas said he and wife Janelle had done sample roasts with beans from Atherton Tablelands grower Skybury plantation and decided to combine the beans with ones they had harvested from their own
Customer will go in the draw to win the original artwork, signed by Mr Pearson. Orders need to be made and paid for in person at Neli Coffee 293 MacDonnell Rd, Clontarf. trees at Neli Coffee’s Clontarf base. “We did some trials with and were impressed with the results,” he said. Mr Thomas said he would develop the flavour in the next few weeks, but it would most likely be “full-bodied with hints of chocolate, a bit nutty, quite distinct and a nice level of acidity”. It will be presented in a bio cylinder adorned with
an original artwork by Mr Pearson, of Kyanga Art, created especially for the project. There will be only 80, 200g units available, priced at $30 each. They are expected sell out quickly. Proceeds will go to Boss Boxing, a not-for-profit club enabling, empowering and equipping Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth through sport, programs, mentoring and business. Mr Pearson, a Rothwell-based, self-taught artist who now has work displayed in New York, Wales, Hawaii and Canada, is thrilled to be part of the collaboration. The artwork he created for the coffee cylinders
aims to combine old ways with new ones depicting coffee beans and flowers, old forests, a yarning circle and the river a life. The cassowary is a nod to the beans’ origins in Far North Queensland. Mr Thomas said the irony was that coffee was an introduced species. “But, sitting around and talking isn’t. I mean, that’s been around for 40,000 years, right? If anything, coffee is now a conduit for that,” he said. Mr Pearson added: “How many deals are made over a coffee … you know life’s ideas and arranging this (concept) over a coffee”. Art has only been part of his life since April last year, prompted by a gift –
canvases and six colours – from his daughter and son-in-law. The only paint brush he had picked up before then was one to paint the house. “I just taught myself. Sometimes in the morning I’ll look at what I’ve done and think how did I do that? It’s just like some spirit … it just captures the essence of what I’m trying to put down. It’s something I love,” he said. Mr Thomas has seen his friend’s work develop and is excited to collaborate with him on this project. He said the blend was being produced instead of a Christmas coffee this year, but customers could place orders and collect it from December 16-23.
MARGATE’S The Jumping Goats Bar will share in more than $2.5 million in Federal Government funding in round three of the Live Music Australia program. Minister for Communications, Urban Infrastructure, Cities and the Arts Paul Fletcher said the program would bring more original live Australian music to communities across the country – from pubs in the remote outback, to clubs in major capital cities. “This funding will help the live music sector to reemerge as Australians continue to get vaccinated and COVID-19 restrictions ease, allowing venues to begin to reopen and rebuild,” Mr Fletcher said. “It is important that our live music sector will be primed to host performances and gigs when permitted to do so, and by supporting these local venues now, we are increasing opportunities to see Australian artists get back on stage.” Federal Member for Petrie Luke Howarth said the funding would provide much-needed support for the local live music venue to rebuild, while also stimulating the economy and igniting excitement back into our community. “I’m pleased to announce that The Jumping Goats Bar has received $42,000 to help with artist performance costs and to expand original live music programs to include duos and bands while continuing free entry for audiences through round three of the Live Music Australia Program,” Mr Howarth said.

Aiming for the Star SEE THE SHOW Jersey Boys – the story of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons is at the Star Casino from January 6-16. Tickets from $75. ticketek.com.au
PHOTO DOMINIKA LIS | Thomas Armstrong-Robley is taking Jersey Boys – the story of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons to a new audience. STORY JODIE POWELL A SERIES of coincidences will see Clontarf’s Thomas Armstrong-Robley staging the musical Jersey Boys – the story of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons at the Star Casino. Having directed the production for Redcliffe Musical Theatre this year, as well as performing in the role of The Four Seasons' lead guitarist Tommy DeVito, he is taking it to a wider audience on the Gold Coast. It is a gig he never dreamt of when he returned to Australia after COVID-19 saw him living in London, but the chance appointment of the Redcliffe
show’s musical director paved the way for the connection with The Star. Faced with the choice of returning to Australia from Barbados after performing on cruise ships via six airports or getting to London in just one flight, Armstrong-Robley made the obvious decision and headed to his country of birth. But with the announcement of a looming London lockdown and winter fast approaching, he knew it was time to make his way back to Australia. “It just broke me mentally and I knew I had to get out. “I made a couple of phone calls, including one to Redcliffe Musical Theatre looking to do some teaching and (president)
Madeleine (Johns) said she was doing Jersey Boys and would I like to direct it. “The week I took on Jersey Boys, Tommy DeVito passed away.” The Redcliffe cast and crew included professional performers and crew who were willing to work free in community theatre purely for the chance to return to the stage – but the Jersey Boys team bound for the Star will be paid for their work. Joining Armstrong-Robley for the season at the Star will be musical director, Legend House International founder Robert Clark. His son, Jeremy Clark (Nick Massi) had auditioned for the Redcliffe Musical Theatre production and inquired about
the intended musical director. Hearing they were yet to appoint one, Clark suggested his father, who was in London at the time. One hastily arranged Facetime call later, and Armstrong-Robley had found his musical director. “He loved what we did and after we finished, he started making some calls. “Star were looking for Queensland-based performers and productions because they knew it was still risky (with snap COVID-19 border closures impacting travelling productions) – we pitched the idea of Jersey Boys and they loved it. “The discussion happened in May and the first tickets went on sale in July.”
Alongside Armstrong-Robley, five performers from the Redcliffe show will reprise their roles at The Star – Dale Shearman, who plays Bob Crewe, Adrian Carr (Gyp De Carlo), Lyndon Steele (Joey Pesci), Taylah McLennan (Francine Valli) and Taylor Yost (Lorraine). Coincidentally, ArmstrongRobley’s quarantine hotel room at Crown on the Gold Coast had a view of Star Casino. “I didn’t realise at the time that I was looking at the future of Jersey Boys out the window,” he laughed. “This little production has the same creative team and it’s created a lot of jobs – it’s unbelievable.”

IN this edition, we’ll follow on from my last column and cover how to use burley. Burley can be introduced to the water in many ways, the easiest and cleanest of which is by a burley pot or bag. They are available purposemade from most tackle shops in many configurations, or they are a simple piece of tackle to make yourself. The basic design is a perforated container or mesh bag into which our burley is placed and subsequently lowered into the water for the current to carry the particles and scent away, hopefully attracting fish and bringing them to our baits which we've positioned in the trail. This method, when practical, is far easier and lower maintenance than dispersal by hand which can be continuously messy and can result in the trail being broken if we become distracted. However, dispersal by hand allows us to increase the area of the start point of our trail by scattering our mix into the water over a much wider area and also allows us to target any specific currents or structure that may not be reached with a trail starting from one individual point. Either way, it's critical to maintain the trail, as fish are following the scent and if it breaks off they can turn back to follow it as it drifts away in the current, resulting in our broken trail actually taking fish away from us. Our pot can be suspended at any depth dependant on how we're fishing. For instance, I generally have mine at or just

However, if we're fishing with handlines, or unable to cast any distance, it may be practical to weight our container and lower it to the bottom and fish our baits right at the source. Give it a go, you might be surprised at what comes up the current. Especially after a couple of hours. Thanks for remember;

FISHING REPORT • Feedback this issue has been very limited, as the weather hasn't been playing the game. • Summer whiting are patchy but a couple of nice fish being caught here and there around the peninsula off the beaches and flats. • The odd school mackerel turning up here and there for our land-based anglers
2.
• Some GTs around Scarborough. • Squire, snapper and some grassy sweetlip off a couple of the rocky points around the peninsula. • A respectable land-based jewfish capture in Bramble Bay. • A couple of mangrove jack being caught as well. • A few sand crabs being caught in Bramble Bay and Deception Bay. • Hopefully the rain coming down outside as I write this will start to flush the rivers and creeks and push the bait out to ring the dinner bell for our summer pelagics.

THERE has been much excitement in local recreational fishing circles this week by the capture (and safe release) of a Queensland groper in the Pine River. It is certainly a very rare, but not unknown catch in the local waters. A 500lb specimen was captured in the 1970s by an angler in the Caboolture River. Queensland groper is one of the largest bony fish, reaching a maximum length of three metres and weight of more than 600kg. That’s a lot of fish! Queensland groper have been totally protected in Queensland for a long period of time. The Queensland groper belongs to the family Serranidae; which also includes common angling species such as coral trout and estuary cod. Like many members of the family, they are hermaphrodites − the young are predominantly female but turn into males as they develop. The species aggregates for spawning but may not spawn every year. Both adults and juveniles can be found on a variety of habitats like estuaries such as the Pine River right out to offshore reefs. Many lagoons in the Swains Reef have resident populations of Queensland groper. Although the adults are a drab brown, small juveniles have striking yellow markings.
DR DAZZA They are a widely distributed fish, being found in Australia from south of Sydney northwards and all around northern Australia and then down as far as Shark Bay. Elsewhere in the world, they are found in the waters of India, Japan, Fiji, Hawaii, Philippines, Kenya and Tanzania, to name a few. While their diet is very broad, adult Queensland groper on coral reefs have expensive tastes – they prefer eating crayfish. Overall, they also eat other large fish, sharks, mud crabs and marine turtles. Due to their fast growth rate and market demand for the small colourful juveniles, they are farmed in many countries, although most of the farmed fish tend to be hybrids with the flowery cod. They can be farmed in large indoor tanks or ponds. A specimen washed up in northern NSW of 2.2m was aged at 37 years.

With approx. ¼ of a billion dollars in sales in the northern suburbs, we think our clients say it best. Here are just a few of our more recent reviews:
Stephan came highly recommended by a neighbour. We are so glad we chose him to sell our canal home. We spoke to a number of agents and Stephan was the only one that didn’t pressure us. He gave great advice on preparing our home and ourselves for the sale. He was patient, listened to us and put in place a strategy we were very comfortable with. He achieved over and above on all his promises and his team including Jo were just lovely to deal with. Since selling we have met the Buyer and they told us that their experience was exactly the same. We are so glad we didn’t go with a high‑pressure agent, we would never have achieved the great result or had the experience we did. Thanks Stephan, Jo and the rest of the team at One Agency. - Newport seller, Oct 2021
Stephan came highly recommended by close friends and he is an amazing agent. He worked really hard to the get the right result for me and I would recommend him to anyone looking to sell in Newport. Stephan is backed up a great team and they helped and guided me with every stage of the sale. Thank you Stephan, Jo and One Agency ‑ best agents on the Redcliffe Peninsula! - Newport seller, Aug 2021
We purchased our home in Scarborough from Stephan at One Agency. He worked really hard to get a great result for the vendor but was also a great communicator & attentive to our needs as a buyers. We were so impressed with Stephan and his team we gave them our rental property to manage. When it comes to selling in the future, Stephan will be our agent. - Scarborough buyer and landlord, July 2021
Stephan is my go‑to agent, he understands the local market better than any other agent and always gets a great result. I have recommended him to friends and family and will use him again in the future. Stephan and his team are the best agents I have encountered. - Newport seller, June 2021
Stephan from One Agency achieved a smooth and timely sale for us at a price that exceeded our expectations. He was extremely pleasant to deal with and handled a delicate tenant, who could easily have stalled our sale, with a level of tact and respect that facilitated the best outcome possible. I would not hesitate to recommend him to anyone and will seek Stephan’s advice and representation in any future real estate transactions. Thank you Stephan! - Scarborough seller, July 2021
We have worked with Stephan and his awesome team, for purchasing, selling and renting all of our properties over the last ten years. We wouldn’t even consider, or trust anyone else…they are simply the best. Newport, Redcliffe & Woody Point seller, Sept 2021
We have dealt with plenty of agents over the years and never trusted any as much as we have Stephan. He is honest, efficient and professional and for these reasons we had a lovely selling experience. - Newport seller, March 2021

Prestige and position 22 Lochside Drive, North Lakes WITH glorious views of Lake Eden, four indoor living zones, two balconies and a swimming pool, this North Lakes home is so captivating you may never want to leave. Positioned on one of the area’s most prestigious streets, the light-filled property is walking distance to The Lakes College and North Lakes State College and a stone’s throw from Westfield. The established gardens are the perfect backdrop for outdoor living, complemented by the pool with a waterfall and a separate spa nestled under a Bali hut. Selling agent Ryan Suhle from Ray White North Lakes described the home as one of the area’s largest. “The size of it in general is impressive, but the size of the bedrooms is fantastic too,” Mr Suhle said. There are two main bedrooms – one upstairs and one on the lower level – each with ensuite and walk-in robe, while the remaining three have builtin wardrobes. While the home itself is impressive, Mr Suhle said the location was just as special. “It will generate a lot of local interest from people who appreciate the location and its proximity to everything,” he said. “It’s positioned on Lochside Drive, which is the

one or two potential buyers, how do you know what you are missing out on? In a big world the buyer prepared to pay the most is highly unlikely to be one of these. But does convenience off-set price? For some people it may, but in my mind I’d be asking myself, how long does it take to save $50,000 or $100,000 or even more? It can take years and even decades. My view, if an Agent is chasing your property for a quick, easy off-market sale you have to question who they are working for? Agents that specialise in finding off-market sales for buyers are typically working as a quasi “Buyers Agent” and in my view they should be getting their fee from the buyer. The Agents that truly care about you will foster good relationships with buyers who are “red-hot” but they WILL ALWAYS recommend that you market your home properly to the widest possible audience. Have a great week!

first of North Lakes’ prestige streets fronting onto the lake. “It’s got views of the lake and you could throw a stone and hit everything you need.” The kitchen, overlooking the dining area, has an abundance of bench space, a six-burner gas stove and a large pantry and flows through to a balcony. Rounding out the first floor are bedrooms, a living room and vast balcony overlooking the lake. A sweeping staircase graces the entry on the lower level, with polished floorboards creating a sense of space in the rumpus room, complete with bar. Also on the lower level are a family room, two bedrooms and the laundry. Auction on site Saturday, December 4 at 2pm.
Off‑market sales Today I’m going to talk about off-market sales. I’ll aim to cover, what is an offmarket sale? How they work and are they a good idea? Off-market sales are sales that happen without a property ever being offered for sale to the broader market. They often happen when an Agent or even a private buyer contacts you and says they want to buy your property. Off-market sales happen more regularly in strong sellers-markets when available advertised stock for buyers is thin (just like now). As with all things, there are advantages and disadvantages with off-market sales. The primary advantage is that you can skip the process of people looking at your home. However, convenience typically comes at a massive disadvantage. The disadvantage is typically born in the price you achieve. It’s amazing when I talk to people who have sold off-market how many have the view that they have done so well, only for me to shake my head privately knowing full-well that they have often lost tens of thousands of dollars in the process, sometimes even WAY MORE. Why? Sellers markets move quickly. As prices move, what your home was worth yesterday is not the same as what it would be worth in a competitive market today. The key word here is competitive. Competition is what gets you the right sales price. If you only show your home to

Working with you, for you. Why list with anyone else? "Professional, Responsive - Great Result! Loren achieved a superb sales result for us very efficiently and with a short settlement too! What impressed us the most was Loren's decisiveness which gave us confidence in Loren's knowledge of the market and conditions at the time, and most of all Loren was responsive pretty much around the clock so we were always comforted by the most up to date circumstances on the sale of our property" - Sellers, October 2021

Billy Limov, who trained at Deception Bay but is now with Allegiance Boxing in Redlands, will fight at Mansfield Tavern on Saturday against Thomas Wilkins. It is Limov’s third fight in a comeback, winning the first two.
Record breaker
PHOTOS DOMINIKA LIS | Redcliffe Dolphins’ new Intrust Super Cup team head coach Scott Murray says 2022 is shaping up to be an exciting season. STORY KYLIE KNIGHT SCOTT Murray will use his experience as an NRL player, coach, teacher and mentor in his new role as head coach of the Dolphins’ Intrust Super Cup team. The hard work starts now, with preseason training beginning this week. Murray, who took on his first coaching gig about 20 years ago, says he’s ready to take the next step. “I’d like to think so. I’ve been coaching for − my first coaching experience was at the Roosters, I was looking after junior reps in 2002 − 20 years. That’s the thing about coaching you’ve got to be in, with and around good people. I feel like I’ve done that, wherever I’ve been,” he said. The former Roosters,
Dragons, Rabbitohs and Sharks player made 50 first-grade appearances from 1992-2001 and coached U20s teams at the Roosters, Rabbitohs and Bulldogs before moving to Queensland to take on a teaching and coaching role at Redcliffe State High School in 2016. The following year, he joined the Dolphins to coach the Colts. In 2018, then Intrust Super Cup team head coach Adam Mogg asked him to be his assistant. It is a role he enjoyed for two seasons before returning to the Colts, where he’s been at the helm for the past two years. During this time, he’s continued to teach and run the rugby league program at Redcliffe State High School. “I value the time I’ve
When a strong crew matters...
had as an assistant coach in the Cup and I was able to see it from a different perspective and I learnt a lot in those two years, especially from Moggy. There will be some things we’ll probably do a little bit differently and some things that we (already) do really well here,” Murray said. “I don’t think it’s necessarily about how we play the game, there will be a little bit of variation to that … some differences, but I guess it’s just my own philosophies on coaching and perhaps what’s important – some cultural things. We want (everyone) to understand what it means to play for this great club.” Murray said most of the 2021 squad would return, with the notable exception of Jayden Nikorima who has an opportunity to play
at the Melbourne Storm. Recruitment is ongoing but Murray said there was no rush to fill the roster. He will be focused on communicating well with the Warriors to make the affiliation arrangement work for both clubs. “I’ll be in and around the Warriors and what they’re doing to a certain extent. Just trying to get on the same wavelength,” he said. Murray is keen to continue developing young players in his new role, while balancing his responsibilities at Redcliffe State High School. “A lot of the kids that have come through our school and our program are in our teams here at the Dolphins. I love seeing guys go on and do something special,” he said. “We want success as a club and we want success
as a team. “It’s just so exciting, what’s happening within the community and the club with the NRL coming in,” he said. “What a wonderful pathway that is now available to young players, whether you’re starting from six years of age to be able to aspire to play for the Dolphins in the NRL. You don’t have to go anywhere.” And he is looking forward to the opportunity to learn from the master, Wayne Bennett. “I’ve only spent a small amount of time with Wayne and I’m looking forward to spending more time with him and the opportunities that presents … what a wealth of knowledge, it’s amazing,” Murray said.
Southern Cross swimmer Barry Pope has been in exceptional form breaking the club’s Boys 13 Years 200m Backstroke record with 2 minutes 51.55 seconds to go with the 100m Freestyle record he holds in the same age group.
Winnings ways
Peninsula Power coach Aaron Philp was in charge of the NPL All Stars Select team which beat Brisbane Roar 3-2 at Perry Park on Saturday.
State relays
Redcliffe Little Athletics anticipates it will have 16 athletes in 11 events across two age groups at the State Relay Championships next month, as well as a combined team, after the Regional relays at Caloundra.

Tigers get green light STORY JODIE POWELL
Gayle Wetzel Fitzgerald.
THE Redcliffe Tigers AFL Club will field a second women’s team for the 2022 season. President Gayle Wetzel Fitzgerald said AFL Queensland had granted the Tigers a second licence, allowing the club to cater for the sport’s growing popularity. “This will strengthen pathways for our female players,” Wetzel Fitzgerald. “We’re running a wom-
en’s summer skills program and we had 80 women turn up in the first week, from under-13s up.” She said the club had to meet the AFL’s six pillars, which include being financially viable and that they will attract enough players to fill the teams. Wetzel Fitzgerald said the league was still working out the structure of next year’s competition, which would determine whether the Tigers formed a senior team and a reserves team or had the teams playing in
Division 1 and Division 2. “It’s likely the second team will be a development side, with players moving through to the first team and the under-17s will move into those senior teams.” Wetzel Fitzgerald said the club was attracting great interest across the board, with 111 boys registered for the summer skills program and a boost in numbers for the under 13 and under 15 sides. “Last season those teams were a joint venture with
North Lakes and already we know they will be standalone Redcliffe teams – and we’re close to three under 16 boys’ teams.” Wetzel Fitzgerald said the club had experienced strong growth in the past Emily Jones. four seasons, which she attributed to their new facilities and burgeoning reputation. “In 2018 we had three youth teams – this year we had eight and next year we could have 10.”
President’s award duo revealed
redcliffetigers.com.au
Club chasing hat-trick of state titles REDCLIFFE Tennis Centre, run by Focus Tennis, is a finalist in two categories of the Tennis Queensland annual awards. It has received its sixth nomination for Club of the Year – it won in 2015 and 2019 – and Director Chris Novic is a finalist in the Coach of the Year. The winners will be announced on Tennis Queensland’s social media channels this week and presented at Queensland’s Parliament House in December. Redcliffe Tennis Centre Director Chris Novic said the Club of the Year was judged on “everything”. “The programs, what you do in the community, for charities, holiday camps, with schools, community groups, it’s the whole package,” he said. “We have started an Indigenous program, we’re linked with the NDIS and we hosted the Special Olympics tennis this year. “That was great. The passion they have, the sportsmanship and the support of the parents. That was the highlight for myself and the team.” On his nomination for Coach of the Year, Novic said: “It’s not really about me, it’s about the students and being part of their tenPHOTO STEPHEN ARCHER | Director Chris Novic at Redcliffe Tennis Centre which is chasing two state awards. nis journey.”
Ready for return of racing at memorial pool
Redcliffe LSC President Carl Jansma and Aurora looking forward to Saturday’s meet.
RACING returns to Redcliffe War Memorial Swimming Pool this weekend. After almost two years without a major meet, Redcliffe Leagues Swimming Club will host a Long Course Preparation meeting on Saturday. Around 250 entries are expected from the Sunshine Coast, Brisbane and all the peninsula clubs. “It’s an exciting opportunity to get swimmers back to our pool,” said RLSC
President Carl Jansma, adding there may be another meet in the new year. The pool closed in May last year for maintenance, just as the first hard COVID lockdown was being eased. What started as applying grout and replacing damaged tiles, stretched to replacing all tiles after more damage was found. The pool reopened in February. Within three months of that, work started on the 18-metre pool at the Sydney
St centre, which is 50 years old. A 17-week upgrade has been completed. RLSC is accepting new members in all age groups and Masters. Some club members are in the top five per cent in Queensland and many work closely with Belgravia squads. However, the main aim is to help and courage members to enjoy swimming and improve. Sporting passion a family affair PHOTO STEPHEN ARCHER | Annette Herbener on the court.
STORY NICK CROCKFORD ANNETTE Herbener has spent a lifetime in tennis. She loves the sport, everything about it, except matches. “I never play fixtures,” the Rothwell resident said. “I did once, that was enough!” Social tennis is Mrs Herbener’s passion at Redcliffe Tennis Centre, where she has run the Friday morning Social sessions for 21 years, works in the canteen and is a committee member. However, the family connection goes back much further. Mrs Herbener took over from her mum Daphne
Boyes who ran the sessions from 1959-2000. Before Mrs Boyes it was her sister (Mrs Herbener’s aunt) Shirley Langsdor who started Friday social tennis in 1953 on a court at the old fire station on Oxley Ave. “I can’t imagine what I’d have done without tennis,” Mrs Herbener, 70, said, “you meet so many different people. “It’s a sport you can do as a kid and later in life. We get between 10 and 18 players (on Fridays), purely to play and enjoy the company.” Mrs Herbener started playing aged of seven when the Redcliffe club was four
I can't imagine what I'd have done without tennis courts where the council chambers now stand. Her sister Colleen Butler played night fixtures and at one time the peninsula had 34 courts for public use. Both followed their parents into the sport and Mrs Herbener was often among 100 youngsters at Saturday morning lessons. Gail Sim-
mons, who was at the same lessons, still plays with Mrs Herbener 60 years later. It is little surprise three of Mrs Herbener’s children were line judges and operated the scoreboard at the historic Milton Tennis Centre in Brisbane. Daughter Cheryl Jenkins has been officiating around the world for 30 years and in 2019 became the first female Chief Umpire of the Australian Open. Mrs Herbener’s husband Ed was President of Redcliffe Tennis Centre and a key figure in the upgrades which transformed it into today’s 12-court venue.
He was also a linesman at the Australian Open championships for 18 years and on retiring became a referee at tournaments in Queensland. One of his work colleagues offered Mrs Herbener a job driving tennis stars around when they came to Brisbane for tournaments. “It was to the hotels and back to Milton, that sort of thing,” Mrs Herbener said, “the last few years it was also to Boondall. Pat Cash was one of them.” So too Slobadan Ivanovic, Grant Connell, Brad Dyke, John Fitzgerald, Lleyton Hewitt, Todd Woodbridge.
Record bid in gateball’s first ‘challenge’ DECEPTION Bay will this month host the first Gateball Challenge. The ‘challenge’ is to hit a single ball four metres through a hoop in one shot. If successful, entrants will be registered as part of the record attempt. Shots will be $1 one shot; $2 three shots; $7 five shots; $10 20 shots, with a free tutorial as well. The ‘Challenge’ will be at Deception Bay Bowls Club,
Bayview Tce, on Sunday November 28, noon-5pm, open to everyone with a free sausage sizzle and some free drinks. Organised by the Australian Gateball Union (AGU), it aims to raise awareness, interest and playing – as well as set a record. Geoff Morris, president of the AGU, hoped the challenge would “encourage people to get out in their community and see different opportuni-
ties available to them”. The sport is similar to croquet, using a mallet, balls and hoops with clubs at Deception Bay, Redcliffe, Ipswich, the Gold Coast and Perth. Gateball started in Japan after World War II and was introduced to Australia by the Japan Sports Club Society in 1986. Visit australiangateballunion. com.au or Facebook.com/Australian/Gateball/Union

Aussie call for ‘cream of crop’ PAGE 60 // STORY CONTINUED ALL will go to Sydney next year for the Big 4 Invitational against teams from Lebanon, the Pacific Islands and an Invitational side. In charge of the Under 17 team will be Craig Newald, from Narangba, who says he still “plays a bit” at North Lakes, but mainly coaches. “It’s a big step up for these guys,” said Newald, also assistant coach of the national Over 40s team, “but they are the cream of the crop coming through. “We have a lot of players here who can make that step up and go further if they want to. “It’s just a matter of commitment and determination. “Ryan has been coming through and we’ve seen dramatic development in the last 12 months. He’s really come on. “Rachael has been in the national squad for five years now. She’s ‘been there, done that’ since she was 16. “This is a big deal for them. Next year there is World Cup selection and the guys will have to make the Under 20 team for Ireland in 2023.” The path to a green and gold jersey starts with centres combining for trials to select teams, in all age groups from Under 10 to seniors, for the Australia Nationals. At the nationals, Tagaroos selectors choose a top 32 and then top 16, with six shadow players, from the Queensland, NSW and Victoria. “Going from such as North Lakes and Caboolture modules to playing state cup and then national level against teams from Townsville, Weipa and NSW is a big step,” said Newald. “New South Wales is particularly strong in Oztag.”

If successful, the two tennis courts nearest Oxley Ave will be converted into eight Pickleball courts – four on each. They would be the first purpose-built Pickleball courts in this region.
