STORY KYLIE KNIGHT A PROGRAM at North Lakes is helping children and young people with autism connect and be more confident.

Mark and Amanda Bradbrook founded The Lab North Lakes which runs sessions and school holiday programs at The Space YMCA North Lakes and at Kallangur Community Hall.

The activities are provided for children and young people aged 9-20 years, with a focus on technology, games and fun.

The Lab, which started this year, makes them feel included, providing opportunities to take part in activities they are interested in and to socialise with like-minded children.

They are able to choose an activity each session such as video games, puzzles, robotics, board games, card games, arts and crafts, jewellery making and more.

“They get to know the other children involved and are excited to see each other,” Mrs Bradbrook said.

“They have that space, where they can hang out with their friends. They don’t usually have that environment.”

There is also IT mentoring provided in programming, gaming, 3D printing, 3D art, animation, robotics, and STEM. The Lab offers a girls-only group but combined sessions are at Kallangur Community Hall and The Space YMCA North Lakes on Saturdays in a calm, low-lit environment.

About 40 children are involved in total, 10 in each group. Some groups are

age-based, but they also have a general group which caters for a range of ages.

Mr Bradbrook recalled a boy who used to cling to his laptop when he attended, who now no longer brings it and is engaged with his peers.

Some do not want to leave when the session is over and others have vastly improved their verbal communication skills.

It has been rewarding for

the couple, who have two children on the autism spectrum, and plan to expand to Albany Creek.

The cost of the program is covered by the NDIS or is $80 per session.

There are mentors in each room with technical experience and a support worker.

Permit trial is now over

Region in focus for Deputy Mayor

MOTORISTS who park near Redcliffe Peninsula Line railway stations will no longer be required to apply for on-street parking permits.

Moreton Bay Regional Council has ended a trial of an on-street parking permit system, as commuters make the most of the train line’s 2850 car parks.

Mayor Peter Flannery said plenty of capacity close to stations meant residents were not affected by commuters using nearby streets to park and catch a train.

The permit trial was introduced prior to the opening of the line in response to community concerns, but the geographical area of the permit system was reduced in 2018 following further community feedback showing it was not required in streets further out.

There has since been minimal daily use of the permits across the trial area.

The new arrangements are now in force.

STORY JODIE POWELL JODIE Shipway describes her first week as the Moreton Bay Region’s Deputy Mayor as a whirlwind.

With news of Cr Denise Sims’ (Div 7) resignation from the role – and from Council – the night before still sinking in, Cr Shipway (Div 4) and her fellow councillors fronted up to the October 20 Council meeting expecting to work their way through the agenda as usual.

Instead, they discovered that by law they had to vote for a replacement immediately.

Consulting with husband Mark about the implications of standing for Deputy Mayor for their family via text, Cr Shipway found herself in a three-way contest with Cr Tony Latter (Div 12) and Cr Adam Hain (Div 3).

“I acknowledge that I am quite early in my journey here at council and do want to note that I am not running today as a springboard to run as Mayor in 2024 but rather I see an opportunity to grow personally and add value to our current leadership team,” she said in her pitch to colleagues.

Cr Shipway thanked councillors for voting her into the role.

“Obviously it’s been a bit of a whirlwind – no-one expected this at this time yesterday – but I think Council has proven we can handle most things,” she said.

“I want to pay my respects to the out-going Deputy Mayor in Denise.”

The first-time councillor said she was proud to be elected to the role and would represent the region as a whole as well as her own division.

Speaking to Dolphins News last week, Cr Shipway said she was grateful for her family’s support.

“My husband’s super proud and my mum, but the kids don’t care,” she laughed.

“They’re 12 and eight and one asked could we still go camping – which was a yes.

“It was only this morning that it started to sink in.

“I had the morning to myself and it hit me that it was the first time I was going somewhere (the Sports Stars of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games business lunch) as the Deputy Mayor.”

Cr Shipway said it was important councillors took the time to listen to the community.

“Part of the council role I love is the face-to-face stuff,” she said.

“I really want to get out there and spread the positive message − we’re still a relatively new council but we have already made some great changes.

“People want to see infrastructure being thought about − they need to know the plans are there and the money is there.”

Cr Shipway said the region’s vast footprint was both a blessing and a challenge.

“Our region is growing faster than we ever dreamed.

“It still surprises me how large our region is – 2000sqkm – how diverse and how large it is, and with diversity comes a real challenge for Council.”

Next on her agenda is Council’s review of local laws, a task she relishes because it will provide an updated framework for the region’s governance for officers and the community.

“There’s really difficult things like how many pets can we kept in yards – you have rural versus a 300sqm block in Griffin.

“Consideration for the entire region is an absolute must.”

BRISBANE Convoy for Kids will roll into Redcliffe on November 6 in a bid to raise money for children’s hospice Hummingbird House.

Big rigs will travel from Forest Lake to Redcliffe Showgrounds, arriving about 9am, for a truck show, free rides, face painting, animal petting, magic shows, entertainment, auctions, food stalls, markets, night lights display and fireworks.

Gates open at 9am for the event, which is on until 8pm.

It is not only a family fun day, but also a truck show, with participants competing in a range of categories and all hoping to be the best in their class.

TEAMING UP FOR NEW ADVENTURE ADVENTURE Kings will be the Dolphins’ principal sponsor for the next four years in an “historic deal” for the NRL club.

The sponsorship deal with the Australian-owned and operated company, which specialises in 4WD, camping and outdoor leisure gear, starts immediately.

Dolphins NRL CEO Terry Reader said the deal was signed before the NRL licence had been granted in a “testament to the faith that Adventure Kings have in the club”.

“We had a national company that doesn’t invest in rugby league willing to stand with us and were part of our submission and wanted to be the inaugural partner of our club in a deal for them and for us that meets our objectives and we’re both very happy,” Mr Reader said.

“The northern corridor is really relevant for them … they have a superstore down the road and also on the Sunshine Coast.”

The company sees its partnership with Dolphins as a ‘perfect fit’ for the NRL’s new 17th team and its fan base, with camping and leisure so popular in this region and beyond.

“We see great synergy in the shared values with the Dolphins,” Adventure Kings CEO Christian Rolfe said.

“It’s a really exciting time for Adventure Kings … a small family company growing up, have an absolute passion and love for the outdoors, sport in general.

“We reached out to Terry and the guys looking to get involved at a junior level but talks progressed from there and (we were) lucky enough to be involved with the NRL bid, so we’re absolutely ecstatic to be involved and really looking forward to our journey together.”

The announcement was made on October 27, the same day the club revealed its Heritage jersey (left). The jersey will be worn during Heritage Round in the 2023 season. Designs for home and away jerseys will be finalised next year.

Mr Reader said the Heritage jersey was inspired by those worn by Redcliffe Dolphins players in the 1980s, featuring the iconic red and white, with the club’s new third colour - gold.

“We’ll have it done in our partnership with Classic, as we’ve already announced, and we’ll look to have product in place for Christmas time to make sure our fans and new supporters can actually get some merchandise,” he said.

TEAM TO DRIVE DOLPHINS STORY KYLIE KNIGHT ON the morning the Dolphins staked their claim on their soon-to-be home ground, Suncorp Stadium, hanging a jersey in the dressing room and taking over the scoreboard, Dolphins NRL coach Wayne Bennett spoke exclusively to Dolphins News about his plans and the importance of community.

Q H ow’s the first week been in the job?

THE Dolphins have confirmed their new management and governance structure in a key step on their path towards the National Rugby League.

Terry Reader has been announced as the Dolphins’ inaugural NRL Chief Executive Officer after leading the successful bid to become the NRL’s 17th club.

Reader will report to Dolphins Group CEO Tony Murphy, who is nearing four decades with the club.

Mr Murphy played for the Dolphins between 1982 and 1986 before moving into football management roles and then into operations, becoming Dolphins Group CEO in 2005 as the club expanded its asset base from $18 million to more than $100 million.

The Dolphins’ NRL operations will be overseen by a new six-member board to be headed by Dolphins Group Chairman Bob Jones. Steve Bleakley and Marlene Newcombe have also been appointed Directors of the NRL club, with another three to follow.

PHOTO DOMINIKA LIS | Redcliffe RSL Deputy President Karen Hemers says Remembrance Day is a chance to remember the sacrifices made to protect our way of life.

Taking a moment to remember AS Redcliffe RSL Deputy President Karen Hemers leads commemorations on Remembrance Day, she will be thinking of her father but also the countless others who have made enormous sacrifices to defend our country and way of life.

The RSL’s service at Redcliffe’s Anzac Place will begin at 11am sharp as veterans, families and a grateful community pause to remember.

Mrs Hemers said those who could not make it to the service could still pay their respects by observing a moment’s silence at the 11th hour of the 11th day in the 11th month.

“It’s not a day we take as a holiday, it’s just a day we stop and remember the people who have helped us get to where we are now,” she said.

“It’s about remembering not just the ones who have gone in years past, back in the world wars, which is where it all started. It’s

remembering all of them from Afghanistan, East Timor … all past conflicts … and those who are still here but experiencing problems as a result of their service.

“It’s remembering everybody. It’s remembering all the sacrifices that the men and women in all services have made for us to live in the country we live in now – a peaceful and stable country.”

That will be her central message at the service.

“That’s how I feel. I feel so lucky to be living in this country,” she said.

Mrs Hemers will also speak about the significance of the poppy in commemorations and how the poem, In Flanders Fields, by Canadian physician Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae inspired their use by American woman Moina Michael in 1918 to

raise money.

“It was to raise money for the veterans, to help their families and basically that’s what we do … we sell poppies and the money we make goes to Legacy and it all goes to the families of veterans. It continues on,” she said.

Mrs Hemers joined the Army in 1975, 25 years to the day her father John Gunst’s military career began. Mr Gunst, who died 12 years ago, was heavily involved in Redcliffe RSL. “I was an ‘Army brat’ and I just followed in my father’s footsteps. I tried to get into the corps that he was in, didn’t get in but ended up as a movements and pay clerk,” she said.

“I miss him so much. He was a great influence in my life. He was in SAS and signals and did Vietnam twice, Borneo, Laos … he

did all that. For the first eight years of my life, I hardly ever saw him, only when he came home on R and R. “I was taking after my father and the reason I got on the board (of Redcliffe RSL) was because of him as well.”

Mrs Hemers served in the Army from 1975-81, when she left after having two children.

She cherishes her time in the service and says there are great education and development opportunities for the current generation.

Anyone wanting to attend the Redcliffe RSL Remembrance Day service is welcome. The service starts at 11am sharp and people can arrive anytime after 10am.

As is usually the case for Remembrance Day, there is no march and there will be no road closures.

I’M torn.

We need to open borders and get back to ‘normal’.

Business, tourism, family, mental health – we need to lift restrictions.

But this is going to put our vulnerable, elderly, and unvaccinated at huge risk. These are people in our community, in my church, in your family!

We need to open − so we need to do all we can to prepare to open.

Please get vaccinated.

Keep good hygiene practices. Be vigilant.

Our success here in Queensland now becomes a liability. It makes us think we are immune, but COVID is coming.

Let’s engage the better angels of our nature to keep our most vulnerable safe.

Plea to get vaccinated RESIDENTS in the Moreton Bay Region who have not yet had a COVID-19 vaccine are being urged to do so before borders are expected to open to interstate travellers on December 17.

According to figures released by the Federal Government on October 25, 82 per cent of residents, aged 15 years and over, in the Moreton Bay Region have received their first dose and 67.3 per cent are fully vaccinated.

“With a lot of those people there’s often underlying issues of mental health, drug and alcohol abuse, relationship break-ups.”

Sen-Sgt Howard said while Movember was targeted at men’s mental health, it was a good opportunity to raise the issue more broadly.

“It’s a good cause and it fits in with what we do.

“While raising money is important, I think the most important thing about Movember is people start talking about mental health and awareness.

“If it raises awareness, then it’s done its job.”

While the men in the watchhouse will grow moustaches, Sen-Sgt Howard said there were other challenges the team could take on, such as Move for Movember and hosting a mo-ment.

“The girls are still working out what they may do, and we’re going to have a sausage sizzle at Morayfield Bunnings as well, he said.”

Sen-Sgt Howard said police at the Redcliffe watchhouse worked closely with mental health court liaison officers to ensure people in custody had the support they needed when appearing in court.

“We identify people who need support and can get the officers to come into the watchhouse to be with them,” he said.

History steeped in community STORY KYLIE KNIGHT COMMUNITY was at the heart of Grace Lutheran Primary School even before it opened in 1971 and as the school celebrates 50 years, it is still the case.

The school has hosted a myriad of events throughout the year to mark the anniversary, culminating in a gala dinner on October 23.

Principal Trudy Moala said it was a highlight bringing people, who had been integral to the school’s formation, together with past students, staff and families.

“We had two past principals there, which was really exciting, and then about three past principals of the college, a past director of the creche and kindergar-

ten. With that mix of history in the room as well as the party atmosphere, it was a really exciting evening and celebration. Then of course present families as well and staff,” Mrs Moala said.

Among those present was Juliann Kindred, who was instrumental in the opening of the school.

Her son Christopher was attending Grace Creche and Kindergarten when his teacher, Pastor Joe Stolz’s wife Lorraine, said he needed to attend a primary school rather than a preschool.

Mrs Kindred approached Pastor Stolz to ask if a school could be established, so children attending Grace C&K could progress to a Protestant Christian school on the peninsula.

“This was in the ‘70s, there was no government

funding, there was no support, there was nothing and the pastor basically said if you can find 15 children you can have the church hall. So, off she went and she got the 15 children,” Mrs Moala said.

After much fundraising, including with the assistance of Scarborough Catholic Parish’s Father Frawley who donated one day’s profit from the Catholic Fun Fair, they had enough to employ a teacher and open the school.

First classes were held on January 25, 1971, at Redeemer Church Hall with Lyn Hauser as teacher-incharge and 15 Year 1 and Year 2 pupils.

T h e s e days, there are 413 pupils and 62 staff on campus.

The first principal, Bruno Matuschka was appointed in 1972 and the first building erected at Maine Rd, Clontarf, in 1973.

The school has expanded significantly over the years following the acquisition of five house blocks and the former Agnew Sewing factory site. In 2009, a major refurbishment began and in 2018 the well-known brown and yellow uniform was replaced with royal blue.

Mrs Moala is in her fifth year as principal and recently signed on for another five years. She took on the task of researching the school’s history ahead of the anniversary and said this knowl-

edge would help frame her vision for the school.

“For me, researching the history … I was going to contract that out but once I got into it I thought, ‘no, I’ve got to learn this and ensure some of those early-day values were continued through in our strategic planning for the future’.

So, I’ve really enjoyed that,” she said.

Mrs Moala interviewed people from the congregation, searched through the school archives and spoke to establishment families.

“Anybody you talk to, associated with the school, say that it’s child-focused and God’s love is shared. What’s (also) sprung out of that has been community,” she said. “I don’t think that was intended. It just happened with the right people in the

school and the right families and it’s been like that the whole way through.”

The school’s motto is Grow in Grace, and it continues to evolve in terms of the facilities on campus but also the style of teaching.

Mrs Moala said child-focused initiatives would be a big part of the plan for the next five years and the school already had facilities to support that – flexible learning style furniture including laptop lounges, stand-up tables and write-on desks.

There is also a focus on STEM and performing arts.

Work has started on a new early learning centre at the Clontarf campus for children aged 2-5 years, which will work alongside Grace Creche and Kindergarten at Redcliffe. It is due to open early next year.

Supply and demand drive property STORY JODIE POWELL MORETON Bay Region’s booming real estate market is showing no signs of slowing, according to agents.

They say demand outstripping supply is behind the surge, with many canny investors cashing in on the region’s increasing popularity.

Ray White Woody Point principal Damien Misso said the market was attracting a variety of buyers.

“We’re seeing people from interstate investing and people looking to call this region home, as well as local buyers,” Mr Misso said.

“As a rough estimate we have 20 percent less listings than at the same time last year and 20 percent more buyers than this time last year. As long as supply and demand remains as unbalanced as it is, I can’t see it slowing down in the short term.”

Ray White Scarborough sales and marketing consultant Kevin Bostock said some properties were fetching 30 percent more than they were six months ago.

“You will start to see a little bit of reluctance from buyers, but there’s still a surge coming from the south,” Mr Bostock said.

“It’s a great time to sell an investment property because they’re selling within two to seven days as long as they are priced well.

“From 2001-2003 prices went up nearly 300 percent, but it hadn’t done anything for 13 years prior. There’s always something that does it – at that time there was another shortage.”

Lakes principal Chris Bowmaker said buyer expectations were also contributing to rising prices.

He said whereas firsttime buyers were previously happy to start with a more modest property and either renovate or work their way up in the market, many were now looking for homes with all the bells and whistles from the outset.

“We have become entitled over the last 20 years in thinking we have to have nice houses,” he said.

Mr Bowmaker said those willing to move a little further afield or buy a less polished property would still find homes that were affordable.

“We have been lucky in Queensland because we have been developing more

stock, which has kept prices low and now prices are catching up, but we still have a lot of catching up to do compared with other parts of the country.

“All it is, is supply and demand.”

Image property’s Andrew Reibelt said his listings were lasting about five days.

“It’s really pretty vora-

cious,” he said.

Two properties listed for sale in the middle of last week had attracted 70 enquiries between them, Mr Reibelt said.

“Previously it would have taken six months to get that many,” he said.

“We have never seen a market where the common agreement is that auction is the best way to sell.”

“We’re ridiculously excited, especially because so many things have been cut because of COVID.” The Nutcracker tells the story of Clara, who is given an enchanted nutcracker doll on Christmas Eve. Unable to sleep, she

Honour for history-saving duo STORY KYLIE KNIGHT

IN ITS final act before folding, Redcliffe City Rotary Club made steps to honour well-known local historians Pat Gee and Margaret Harding.

Past President Bob Blanch said the group wanted to present Paul Harris Fellowship Awards to the pair for their tireless efforts in preserving Redcliffe’s history.

“Author and senior researcher Pat Gee and researcher Margaret Harding have provided great support to Rotary and over many years to History

Redcliffe and the community, bringing our local history to light,” Mr Blanch said.

At the ceremony during which the club handed back its Charter to Rotary International, President Traven Searle announced it had started the process to award Paul Harris Fellowships to Ms Gee and Mrs Harding.

The request to honour Ms Gee and Mrs Harding was granted and on October 1 they were presented with certificates and pins at the History Redcliffe monthly meeting.

It took the pair by surprise.

“It was a real shock. We

didn’t deserve it, when you compare it to past people who have received these awards in Redcliffe,” Mrs Harding said.

“It was something that I do voluntarily, but it’s nice to be recognised.”

She enjoys researching local history, helping others piece it together and has learnt some interesting things about Redcliffe along the way.

“It really was a nice gesture and it is appreciated,” she said.

Ms Gee agreed and said it came ‘like a bolt out of the blue’.

“It’s something I’ve been

interested in. It’s not a hardship for me. It’s just something you do because you enjoy it,” she said.

“I’m lucky to be in a field to indulge my passions.”

The work continues with Mrs Harding helping a friend who is compiling a history of Uniting Churches. She is looking for interior photos of three churches before they formed the Redcliffe Uniting Church – Congregational, Methodist and Presbyterian.

Angling for a great competition

REDCLIFFE Peninsula Game & Sportfish Club is holding its annual sportfish competition from Friday, November 12 until weigh in at 3.30pm on November 14.

The competition is designed to cater for all types of fishing, whether it be from a big boat or small, or caught off the beach.

Open to the public, the event starts with a meet and greet at Moreton Bay Boat Club from 6pm on November 12, which includes a briefing and distribution of capture sheets.

Club president Vaugh Daly said the weigh station would open for weighing fish and handing in capture sheets from 3.30-4.30pm on the Sunday. There will be a barbecue at 3.30pm and the presentation from 4.30pm.

Entry is $25 for senior ANSA or QGFA members, with free entry for accompanying junior.

Temporary ANSA membership available for non-members for $10.

Mr Daly said anglers could compete in one or more challenges, but individual fish could only be submitted in one challenge.

The event includes a land-based beach challenge, a bay challenge and a bluewater challenge. Entrants can win prizes – supplied by Anaconda Morayfield – for registering before November 5, catching the longest fish, matching the mystery length and tagging the most fish.

The wig and turban service provides services free to cancer patients.

REDCLIFFE’S wig and turban service will be able to help more patients who lose their hair during cancer treatment thanks to donations from the Redcliffe Tigers AFL Club and Crown Properties.

The Tigers raised $3300 to donate to the service from their Crown Ladies Day in July and Crown Properties business manager Jody Allison-McLachlan, who sponsored the event, announced last week she would boost the total to $5000.

It takes the club’s fundraising efforts for the service – which provides free wigs and turbans to women who have lost their hair through cancer – to more than $10,000.

C r a i g L e w i s said the donation w o u l d make a big difference.

“It means a lot – one of the main concerns with many patients is losing their hair,” he said.

“Our volunteers are fortunate – they get to see the patients when they don’t have their hair and their smiles when they leave.”

Community support worker Lisa Astill said the ROPE team had raised money for their Christmas party and to donate to a local charity.

They collected bottles and cans from local businesses, exchanging them for cash at Clontarf’s Express Recycling.

“We wanted to give the guys an understanding that if you work, you earn,” Ms Astill said.

“It was about community engagement, independence and building selfconfidence.”

ROPE chief executive officer Wes Bleakley said he was proud of what the

team achieved.

“It’s just amazing what they have done – it’s such a big deal,” Mr Bleakley said.

“The big thing we try and teach them is it’s not about taking, it’s about giving back to the community.”

Be Uplifted at symposium STORY KYLIE KNIGHT WOMEN with breast cancer and their loved ones are being urged to attend a symposium hosted by the charity Be Uplifted on November 8.

The event, called Insight and Knowledge: Improving the Breast Cancer Journey, will be held at Kedron Wavell Services Club’s Blue Room from 9am-4pm.

Wendy Paterson, who cofounded the group in 2010 with Barbara Zimmerley, said it would be the second symposium Be Uplifted had hosted – the first was in 2019 and plans for an event in 2020 were derailed by COVID-19.

The 2019 event attracted 89 participants for the

morning session and 70 in the afternoon.

Ms Paterson is hoping for more this year but is also mindful of COVID-19 fears among women undergoing treatment for breast cancer.

There will be eight expert guest speakers, sharing information on a range of topics.

“Participants gain insight, knowledge and confidence.

Each of the speakers do a Q&A session where they debunk a lot of things,” Ms Paterson said.

She said it was important women had the information they needed to make informed decisions, and receiving counselling early was also vital to give them the tools to cope.

Money raised by Be Uplifted is dedicated to patient care and support, so entry to the symposium is just a gold coin donation.

Ms Paterson encouraged women and their family and friends to come along, so they could all gain a better understanding of what was ahead and the support available.

“It’s all about rebuilding their confidence and their belief in themselves. We’re different to other, bigger organisations,” she said.

She and Barbara Zimmley founded the organisation in a bid to help women who were embarking on a journey they too had experienced.

“We both went through breast cancer … she was six months before me. We went to the same church, I had two young girls and she knew what I was up against. We thought if we survived it, we would give back,” Ms Paterson said.

Creative kids put art and soul into awards EYE-POPPING creations and rich illustrations have stolen the show at this year’s Moreton Bay Region Youth Art Awards, highlighting the next generation of creative excellence.

Twenty-eight works took out top honours in a field of more than 300 entries, with colourful costumes, powerful paintings and even a nod to Marvel’s Iron Man catching the eye of the annual event’s judge.

Moreton Bay Regional Council Mayor Peter Flannery congratulated the entrants and said it reinforced Council’s push for a major university campus with creative industries in the region.

Making Christmas wishes come true

STORY KYLIE KNIGHT REDCLIFFE Central Lions Club members are again lining up to grant wishes for older residents in the community who need a hand in the garden, small jobs done or just someone to take them out for a cup of tea.

Now in its 41st year, the annual gesture of goodwill is offered to people aged 65 years and over living on the Redcliffe peninsula and at Rothwell.

Club President Ted Heyes said applications closed on November 22 and the club aimed to complete all tasks

by Christmas.

“People can request small jobs around the home. These can include mowing lawns, weeding gardens, some hedge trimming and jobs like that,” Mr Heyes said.

“We also deliver Christmas cakes and hampers to people and can take them out for a cup of tea and cake. All of those things that people over the age of

65 find difficult.”

Mr Heyes said members even took residents for outings and one arranged a fishing trip for a man last year.

The club granted 50 wishes in 2020 in what they call a ‘service project’.

“We get a lot of the same people each year, but that’s OK,” he said.

Mr Heyes said other Lions clubs were now replicating the project, which was a way of giving back to the community.

“We get our income from

the community and we’re very conscious of putting it back into the community,” he said.

“People are very grateful.

We get letters of thanks from a lot of people. They are happy to see someone come and think about them and someone that cares enough to come along and do something for them.”

Uniting for child safety PUPILS, parents and teachers from Humpybong State School wore red and walked along the foreshore to raise awareness of child safety and money for the Daniel Morcombe Foundation on October 26.

It was in the lead-up to the annual Day for Daniel on October 29.

The school community created a sea of colour along the boardwalk from Suttons Beach and Scott’s Point before making their way to school for the start of the day.

School mascot Sol the Dolphin was on hand to wave at, high-five and cheer on those taking part.

Sporting boost for college STORY KYLIE KNIGHT WORK has started on The Lakes College’s multipurpose hall which will be a much-needed indoor sporting facility for the whole community.

Principal Nicole Gregory said in addition to indoor courts, the building would include additional classrooms, change rooms, amenities and a new carpark.

“The multi-purpose hall will support our exciting growing sports program, TLC Beyond, and also provide a space for the whole school to come together for assemblies and events,” Ms Gregory said.

“With a 25m pool and amenities project also commencing construction in the coming month, The Lakes College is looking forward to a new phase of engagement in our already well-established TLC Beyond extra-curricular programs.”

Both projects are expected to be completed in July 22.

Ms Gregory said the hall would help meet the needs of the growing college, offering a place for gathering and celebrating as a community.

“Our amenities will provide change rooms and showers for athletes with internal and external access to avoid

game interruptions,” Ms Gregory said.

“Without doubt, the whole community has been eagerly awaiting this project for some time.

COVID in 2020 saw this project needing to be put on hold as the world took

stock of what the pandemic might mean.

“Eighteen months later, we are now building this facility and our families could not be happier.

“The State Government, through the Block Grant Authority, is supporting

the building of our multipurpose hall and the Pool project is the result of Federal Government support. We are grateful to both levels of government for the generosity and ongoing support they have shown our college.”

QUOTA Club of Redcliffe members recently donated a Roger Soundfield System to Clontarf Beach State School to ensure hearingimpaired children have the same opportunities to learn as their classmates.

It was part of an ongoing to commitment to provide the technology to state primary schools across the Redcliffe peninsula. The systems, which cost more than $2000, increase the quality of audio and clarity of speech in the classroom.

Quota will be selling raffle tickets to raise more money for these systems at the Dolphins Central shopping centre on November 25, 26 and 27.

Quota Club of Redcliffe president Avril Kent said the group had been saving money from fundraising efforts for the past two years and bought the first system for Hercules Road State School in April/May. The club hosted a trivia night in June and raised enough money for another

system donated to Clontarf Beach State School in September.

A fashion parade in October has raised enough to buy one for Kippa-Ring State School, if it needs it.

Mrs Kent said the club would meet with the school to discuss its needs soon.

“Quota has always had an interest, for the last 40 years, in the deaf and hard of hearing and we have always done our best to help in that area. Hear and Say is one of the groups we have helped in the past and continue to help,” she said.

Bringing family favourite to life STORY KYLIE KNIGHT EMBARK on an African adventure with Simba when The Lion King JR roars to life on the stage at Mueller Performing Arts Centre this week.

The musical is based on the 1994 Disney animated film and the 1997 Broadway adaptation.

Mueller College Artistic Director Di Schmidt said 112 pupils were involved in the production, to be staged on November 5 and 6.

Most of the performers are primary schoolaged with two Year 7 students taking on specialist roles.

This will be the college’s first production with pupils from early primary school (Years 1-3) in lead roles.

Ms Schmidt said auditions were held for younger students in the hunt for two lead characters, which were filled by girls from Year 2.

As a result, more than 20 pupils from Years 1-3 are now part of the ensemble, taking on an animal character for the first and last numbers and performing with the broader ensemble throughout.

It has been a good chance for older pupils to mentor the younger cast members.

Young Simba will be

played by Lily Rossetto (Year 2), while Micah Rossman (Year 5) will perform as older Simba.

Young Nala will be played

by Ellha De Franz (Year 2), while Charlotte Bird (Year 6) will play grown-up Nala.

Ms Schmidt said Charlotte Westaway (Year 7) was exceptional as Rafiki.

It has been a long road to this point, with auditions starting in term 1 and rehearsals from the first week in term 2.

“It’s a coming-of-age story about a prince who understands and learns his part in life and how he has to fulfill his role and take responsibility for his past ... how he uses his position to help the pride rather than hinder the pride,” Ms Schmidt said.

“There’s also the circle of life … passing on that knowledge to the next generation.”

Ms Schmidt said The Lion King was an iconic children’s story that appealed to audiences of all ages.

“It’s full of really well-written songs and music. It’s very colourful and bright and happy and the kids love it. It’s going to be full of energy and fun,” she said.

ECKERSLEY Print Group is celebrating 50 years in business, having grown from a small family firm to one of Queensland’s leading print operations.

Sales and marketing director Lea Eckersley, pictured, said much had changed since her father, James, started the business in 1971.

Mr Eckersley named the business Jannock Press − an English word meaning “fair and straight forward” – an ethos that has been the hallmark of the company’s evolution.

“This initial, defining framework has formed the guiding value for the family company’s identity ever since,” Ms Eckersley said.

“Dad patented the mounting of nylo plates onto steel blocks and was an early pioneer in the re-use of these

nylo plates for repeat work.

“This innovative and different way of thinking has become a hallmark for the business, before ‘innovation’ became the buzzword it is today.”

Ms Eckersley said the business had carved out an enviable reputation as a quality operation, adding several acquisitions to the business over the past decade to enhance the niche specialties the company offered.

The ISO14001 Enviro-accredited and FSC certified business produces commercial print, signage and display, office print management, promotional products, warehousing, logistics and bespoke design and publishing services.

The company has won a swag of state and national print industry awards for excellence in print and was recognised at the recent Printing Industry Creative Awards, where they

took home the Queensland gold for print excellence in the Leaflets, Flyers and Brochures, Offset category.

The Narangba business has evolved since 1983 when managing director Tom Eckersley started his print apprenticeship.

He became managing director eight years later at 25, when he acquired the business with brothers Jim and Luke, renaming it Print Approach in 1991.

Under a strategic path of growth via acquisition, other companies joined the fold including Imprint, ABC Print, Nicholson Printing, Easi-File, The Printing Office and Fine Print.

The company rebranded as Eckersley Print Group in 2017, and in 2018 added Cross & Hamilton Printers to the fold, with DPMA joining the business this year.

Mr Eckersley said the alignment with DPMA in working ethos and a shared focus on “absolute commitment to the customer” creates strong synergies.

Inventor’s bid to raise money, awareness for melanoma STORY JODIE POWELL

SCARBOROUGH’S Grahame Pilgrim knows first-hand the dangers of melanoma.

Speaking ahead of National Skin Cancer Action Week, which runs from November 15-21, the Reverse Mate inventor urged people not to be complacent when it came to seemingly innocuous blemishes on their skin.

Mr Pilgrim, 72, was having

“He said it was nothing, only an age spot. My next appointment came around and that age spot had increased in size, so before he

could say anything I said I wanted a biopsy taken.

“His words were, ‘Grahame, you are worrying, it’s nothing’.”

But the dermatologist did a biopsy at Mr Pilgrim’s insistence, uncovering a stage one melanoma that needed urgent removal.

A year later, Mr Pilgrim noticed a spot on his shoulder and was again told it was an age spot – it too

turned out to be melanoma and after the first procedure he needed a second, much deeper and larger surgery to remove it.

“My uncle had died many years ago from this same rare form of melanoma,” Mr Pilgrim said.

Earlier this year, Mr Pilgrim found a small, flat pale spot on his forehead.

“It just looked like a freckle,” he said.

His new dermatologist didn’t hesitate, with a biopsy revealing a stage one melanoma.

“I now have a 50mm scar on my temple and a slant eye from the surgery, but I have my life. People think they’re invincible, and they think all melanomas are the same, but they’re not.”

ACCLAIMED artist Ken Done is thrilled the Moreton Bay Region will showcase more of his work, with a travelling exhibition at the Redcliffe Art Gallery.

Done last visited when his iconic ‘Australia’ signs from Expo 88 were unveiled at the Caboolture Historical Village in 2018 to coincide with 30th anniversary celebrations.

The signs had been rescued and restored after an eight-month campaign led by Arethusa College student Kurt Jones – the college’s current school captain – who found them rusting on the

There’s lots of places in Australia that use that coloured letter form now – it’s a great compliment.”

Done is delighted the signs continue to bring people pleasure and it’s a mission he continues with his paintings.

“I like paintings to give you pleasure over time, to make them beautiful enough so you can keep finding new things in them.”

The exhibition at Redcliffe – Paintings you Probably Haven’t Seen − brings together a collection of works selected by Done and the Ken Done Gallery.

Done said it included earlier works as well as recent paintings.

“It’s a diversity of work, visiting a variety of regional galleries. I love regional galleries – there’s a kind of enthusiasm you get from patrons,” he said.

His studio and home at Chinaman’s Creek in Mosman overlook Sydney Harbour and are a world away from his former career as an art director and designer in advertising and design agencies around the world – and that’s just how he likes it.

Asked how he’d spent his morning before his chat with Dolphins News, Done responded

with delight in his voice.

“I always start the day with a swim and a walk,” he said.

“I fed the birds, including a couple of butcher birds who come down for an old chop bone or something like that, and fed the fish that come every day.”

Spending time doing things he loves is important to Done, who recalls a childhood growing up in Maclean, where his father owned a trucking business that would sometimes take them to Brisbane.

“We went fishing every day, there was no homework, just lots of mucking around.

“I’m 81 now and I still like mucking around,” he laughed.

GROWING herbs is a great transition to growing vegetables because beginner gardeners can achieve results without a high skill level.

The Plant Shack’s Peter Popenko said the biggestselling herbs were parsley, mint and basil because there were more well-known uses for them in cooking.

He said gardeners did not need a designated herb garden because the plants could be tucked in anywhere.

“I’ve seen parsley look amazing in bed of flowers.

It looks just beautiful,” Mr Popenko said.

“Mint is something you’d want to keep in a pot because it goes crazy and it’s easier to dump when it gets old.”

It is important to remember herbs have a fairly short lifespan, about one year, and need to be replaced with a new plant when they start looking woody and untidy or go to seed or flower.

Don’t panic and think you’re to blame, when the time comes.

Mr Popenko said most herbs preferred morning sun and refuge from the afternoon heat and, like most plants, they grew better at different times of the year.

“In general, herbs perform

better during winter. They’re much more vigorous over winter and hold their colour quite well,” he said.

Here are his growing tips for the herbs most popular with gardeners.

Note: The most important thing to remember is all herbs like regular feeding. Most benefit from a small addition of Dolomite. In a large pot, add one tablespoon during the plant’s lifespan in conjunction with slow-release fertiliser and an occasional feed of liquid fertiliser such as Triple Boost, PowerFeed or Searles Flourish.

MINT:

This herb is best in a pot of its own. Plant in a good-quality potting mix and use a saucer as the plant gets older, so it can draw on the water during the day if needed. Mint prefers morning sun and afternoon shade.

CORIANDER:

This sometimes hard to grow herb performs best in the cooler months and is prone to bolting, flowering and seeding. You need to keep it in the growth phase, avoiding stress, drying out or running out of food as this will trigger flowering. Use a fertiliser high in nitrogen

such as fish emulsion, Triple Boost or PowerFeed. Do not use Flourish on coriander as the high level of potassium will promote flowering. Avoid full sun by selecting a position with morning sun and protection from the harsh afternoon sun and heat. The plant will only last for a few months and will need to be replaced. You can buy seeds or get a head-start with a plant from your local nursery.

PARSLEY:

This herb performs much better in winter than summer and needs regular feeding to keep it in a happy growth cycle, if harvesting often. When selecting leaves for cooking, remove old ones, not new growth. Synthetic fertilisers such as Thrive AllPurpose and Flourish work well. Parsley has a higher requirement for trace elements than other herbs. These can be provided through frequent feeding. This can be a problem if potting mix or soil gets too old.

Apply liquid fertiliser every two weeks and slow-release fertiliser every 6-10 weeks. Parsley likes sun in winter and more shade in summer to help it survive humidity.

These are both shrubs and technically not herbs. Mr Popenko said it was important to select the correct pot to avoid over-potting, which would lead to poor drainage and could be fatal to plants.

Apply Dolomite twice a year, slow-release fertiliser every 12 weeks and liquid fertiliser every 2-4 weeks. They like good sun and do well on the edges BASIL: This favourite will only live of patios, where it can be quite dry. They don’t like too much for about 12 months. You can water. Do not plant sage with remove the flowers to extend

the life of the plant, but it is worth noting that bees love the flowers and will be attracted to your garden if you leave them be. Feeding requirements are similar to other herbs, including mint, but basil is more prone to pests such as small grasshoppers. You can treat the plant with a molasses spray (2 tbls molasses to 1 litre of water) every seven days.

Other organic sprays on the market will also do the job. The plant loves morning run and frequent watering will result in nicer looking leaves that taste better too.

OREGANO AND THYME:

These plants can become a ground cover, so need room to move. Both will happily coexist with other herbs and will live for about 12 months. They are susceptible to aphids but can be treated with a detergent spray – 10ml detergent in 1 litre of water. Apply generously in the afternoon.

Garlic and thyme barbecue chicken Ingredients • ½ cup olive oil • 3 cloves garlic, crushed • 2 tbls fresh thyme leaves

1. Place the chicken, breast-side down, on a board so the back is facing up and the drumsticks are pointing towards you.

3. Turn the chicken, breast-side up, and press down firmly on the breastbone to flatten the chicken. Make a small cut under each wing, to help flatten the chicken more.

4. In a large baking dish, whisk together the oil, garlic and thyme.

Add the chicken and turn to coat. Cover and marinate in the refrigerator for at least two hours, turning occasionally.

5. Preheat the barbecue to medium.

6. Remove the chicken from the marinade and season both sides with sea salt and pepper.

7. Place the chicken on the grill, skin side down and slowly grill until the fat renders and the skin becomes golden brown and crisp, about 15 minutes.

8. Turn the chicken, continue grilling until just cooked through, 15 to 20 minutes.

9. Remove from the grill, loosely tent with foil and rest 10 minutes before cutting.

10. Serve sprinkled with tendrils of thyme and a pinch of salt and pepper.

Method

IN this edition, we’ll cover fishing with burley.

For the uninitiated, burley is a substance or scent added to the water to attract fish, and establishing and maintaining a burley trail in the current is a fantastic way to bring the fish to a bait presented in this same trail.

Fish have the ability to sense vibration in the water regularly, but they also have an incredible ability to detect minute traces of scent in the water down to the level of parts per million. This being said, using scent and naturally occurring tidal flow or currents to attract them to our bait can be a very successful tactic.

This can especially be the case for land-based anglers chasing fish that may be out of casting or drifting range or even fish that are uncatchable due to their proclivity to stay tight in among tackle-destroying structure unless given a reason to venture out into clearer, less obstructed water away from their home environment.

Introduced into the water at spaced intervals, so the current takes our burley trail to where we think fish may be congregating or passing through, can be a sure-fire way to bring these fish within range.

Ingredients are wide ranging with many anglers putting a lot of effort into their burley recipes and preparation and while these concoctions certainly attract fish, beginners can start out with ingredients as simple as old fish frames or leftover bait from previous outings.

until soggy can attract surprisingly large numbers of fish and a wide variety of species. Breadcrumbs, chook pellets, some grains, brans and cereals also produce results.

The addition of scents such as tuna oil or aniseed oil are a definite plus although they can make burleying by hand a smelly exercise, but the results are definitely worth it.

And if you find yourself being followed around by cats for a few days afterwards, your burley mix is more than likely a good recipe.

Next issue I'll discuss some methods of application and dispersal.

• Giant trevally, fringe fin trevally in Bramble Bay and also off Scarborough in Deception Bay. • Some more consistent, grassy sweetlip catches reported on the inshore reefs, rocks and jetties.

• While not as thick as in the winter months, squire, snapper are still available for land-based anglers right around the peninsula and off the jetties.

• Some respectable sandcrab catches taken in Deception Bay. • A couple of unconfirmed reports of a threadfin salmon and a mangrove jack being caught in Bramble Bay and the Newport canals respectively, (the weather's definitely been warm enough at the time of writing this).

• Not a lot of prawns yet, but fingers crossed we have a better season than last summer. Do your rain dances!

LET’S take a bit of a look at one of the giants of the ocean – the white shark. It’s not an animal most anglers encounter.

White sharks along with tiger and bull sharks are the three species most frequently causing serious bites or fatalities to water users. The number of bites on surfers in Australia is rising over time.

Male white sharks typically reach a maximum length of about four metres and females five metres, with females over six metres having been recorded. That’s a lot of shark. Some early records of even larger individuals were misidentified basking sharks or very inaccurately measured.

Initially the longevity of white sharks was underestimated but it now known that they can live for up to 70 years of age and it takes a long time for them to reach maturity. Age at maturity is substantially higher for white sharks than it is for humans – 26 and 33 years for males and females respectively.

While white sharks can be found along ocean beaches and occasionally within Moreton Bay, they also range to the deep ocean and can be found at depths of greater than one kilometre.

Individual adult white sharks are highly migratory and do cross ocean basins. For example, white sharks move between South Africa and Australia. In our region, white sharks are more commonly present in the cooler months.

There are several locations that are considered aggregation sites for juvenile white sharks

on the east coast. Perhaps the best-known and researched location is around the Newcastle/Port Stephens area in NSW, but an aggregation site also occurs offshore of Fraser Island (K’Gari). As white sharks grow and mature, they switch their diet from mostly fish to consuming a larger proportion of marine mammals such as seals and whales. White sharks are frequently associated with whale carcasses that they feed on. The metabolism of white sharks is low, and they can sustain themselves for up to a month, if necessary, from a single large meal.

White sharks have a remarkably broad temperature tolerance, and this is in a large part due to them being able to regulate their body temperature by retaining heat. White sharks have been found in waters just over 3 degrees Celsius to those over 24 degrees Celsius.

Although there are significant uncertainties, the Australian population of white sharks is estimated to be between 8000 and 10,000 animals. The white shark is protected in Australian waters and cannot be retained by a commercial or recreational fisher.

DEON Bird will use his experience as a professional rugby league player, mentor and wellbeing coach to develop the women’s game at the Dolphins as he guides the inaugural Women’s U-19 2022 Harvey Norman team.

His 11-year professional rugby league career started with the Brisbane Broncos in 1994 in lower-level grades and he was there during the Super League war before travelling to England to play in the competition there.

Soon after, he become a mentor for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.

“This would profoundly change the trajectory of my life as I realised my real purpose – assisting people at risk, in particular Indigenous youth,” he said.

When a strong crew matters...

Bird worked in this role for seven years, before moving into the health and mental health field.

He was appointed as the Dolphins’ wellbeing/ education officer in May and said being at the club reignited a desire to be part of something and sparked his interest in coaching.

“The landscape of contact sport has changed dramatically. To be part of that is pretty cool especially here at the Dolphins,” Bird said.

He said the club had a proud history and he was excited to be involved in the next chapter, which included women’s rugby league and the NRL.

The father-of-four has three daughters aged 12, 14 and 16 years. They have been playing rugby 7s and it has given him a chance to gain a greater understanding of the sport from a female perspective.

His eldest daughter is keen to join the Dolphins’ team. So far, more than 20 players have expressed interest in playing, but the club is still looking for more.

Train and trial sessions are being planned for December and January before games start in February. There will be two trial games before the three-game season starts in March.

“I want to create a base of young women that will be there the year after and we want a bit of buzz around the women’s game,” he said. His and the club’s vision is to create a pathway for female players from juniors to NRLW. “I’d love to win games, but this is more about the development of the girls’ game,” he said.

It’s about “adding to good people” and “coming together as a team”.

“It’s really exciting.

Potentially in the next two years, we’ll look to have another girls’ side in the BHP competition but we could be on the verge of an NRLW side as well.”

SCOTT Murray has been appointed coach of the Redcliffe Dolphins Intrust Super Cup team for 2022 following the resignation of Adam Mogg.

The club made the announcement on October 28, elevating Murray from his role as Hastings Deering Colts coach. Murray has been on the coaching staff at the club in various roles since 2017, coaching the Under-20s to a premiership in 2017 and winning the Colts competition the same year prior to the two competitions combining into one format the following season.

He has also been an assistant to outgoing coach Adam Mogg.

The move follows the resignation of Mogg the week before.

Chairman Bob Jones said: “Adam has been an incredible servant to the Redcliffe Dolphins Club and his time as head coach of the club has been one of the most successful in the club’s history”.

Achievements include: two ISC Grand Final appearances (2016, 2018); minor premiers (2016, 2018), two club championships (2016, 2017), 2018 ISC premiers and minor premiers.

When asked what the highlights were, Mogg said it was simply the past six seasons and the Dolphins getting into the NRL. “Players also achieving NRL contracts along with the development of Stephen Parl and Daniel Green as coaches,” he said.

Caboolture Little Athletics’ Twilight Carnival had entries from across the region and far beyond making it the club’s biggest in recent memory.

Redcliffe and Deception Bay were among more than 40 clubs, from Bundaberg down to the Gold Coast, which sent a total of 659 young athletes to Centenary Lakes for the huge event last month.

Accolades flow for Raiders Moreton Bay Raiders’ trophy cabinet has received a swag of new additions after a superb season in Rugby League Brisbane (RLB).

Raiders’ Open Division 3 side did the double, winning the Minor Premiership and Grand Final with Cameron Joyce winning the Grand Final Man of the Match.

Team-mate Lucas Maloney was also named the RLB Northside Players’ Player of the Year, based on the referees awarding 3-2-1 votes for each game.

Club honours memory of former player THE annual memorial match for Senior-Constable Brett Forte raised $2700 for Queensland Police Legacy.

Sen-Constable Forte,

who grew up on the peninsula and played for Redcliffe Leagues Hockey Club, was shot and killed on duty in 2017.

Each year the club puts to-

gether an invitational team to play an Emergency Services side in his memory and raise funds for Police Legacy, which supports families of deceased officers.

Redcliffe won this year’s match 5-2 on October 23.

PENINSULA Power’s season ended on Friday when it bowed out of the finals, but preparations for 2022 are already under way.

Lions won a hard-fought semi-final 1-0 at AJ Kelly Park on Friday with a 92nd minute winner and will face Olympic in this weekend’s grand final.

However, Power’s plans are gathering pace for next year with many of this year’s premiership-winning side to return and chase an NPL Qld record.

“Things are shaping up well,” President Craig Feuerriegel said, “the coaching staff have already been talking to the players.

“We will have some new signings next season with the aim to become the first club to win three Premierships in a row.”

On the semi-final defeat, Feuerriegel said: “We had three or four good chances, another night we’d probably have taken them.

BRENDEN Hall and Blake Cochrane, two of the Moreton Bay Region’s most decorated Paralympians, have their sights set on the Birmingham Commonwealth Games in 2022.

The sporting futures of both swimmers – key figures in Australian teams since 2010 – were undecided after the Tokyo Paralympics in September.

But Cochrane, a former Southern Cross student, said, at a Sports Stars lunch at the Eatons Hill Hotel last week, his “athletic journey continues” .

The 30-year-old said the “rollercoaster” ride to Tokyo and winning medals helped rediscover his “passion” and “drive” for swimming.

Hall, from Mango Hill just missed medals in Japan, also has an eye on the Australian Commonwealth Games trials in April.

“Hopefully swimming on, yes” he said.
