REDCLIFFE’S iconic English tearooms Teddies ’n’ Sweets had a brush with fame when Thomas Crane – renowned for keeping the music of Queen frontman Freddie Mercury alive with his popular tribute show – popped in for a cuppa.

In town to perform his acclaimed show Bohemian Rhapsody – Queen’s Greatest Hits at the Redcliffe Entertainment Centre, Crane caught wind that Teddies ’n’ Sweets owner Anna Connor

was a massive Freddie fan.

Ms Connor is the Guinness World Record holder for the most times watching a film in a cinema – she saw Bohemian Rhapsody 108 times.

She has since watched it hundreds more times on DVD at home.

A corner of Teddies ’n’ Sweets is dedicated to her beloved collection of Freddie Mercury memorabilia, as well as a framed certificate commemorating her place as the record holder.

Crane, intrigued by Ms

Connor’s obsession with the movie after learning about it from Dolphins News, was delighted to stop by with wife Krystal.

They spent more than one hour at Teddies ’n’ Sweets reminiscing about Mercury, sampling Ms Connor’s scones and sipping a peppermint tea.

Crane said moving to Queensland and touring in the couple’s Mercedes Sprinter van – complete with piano and drum kit – was like a dream come true.

“I’d always envisaged

touring in a motorhome,” he said.

While he doesn’t have a favourite Queen song, Crane said I want to Break Free was a fitting tune for both COVID and his travels.

Ms Connor said she had long dreamt of meeting Crane. “We know 100 percent that we’re never going to meet Freddie, but you’re the next best thing,” she said, clutching a custom-made replica of Mercury’s famed yellow jacket Crane wears on stage.

“I can’t believe it.”

DOLPHINS’ NRL WIN

Plan to build NRL powerhouse club STORY KYLIE KNIGHT WINNING the bid to become the NRL’s 17th team was 74 years in the making, but the hard work is just beginning for the Dolphins, who are now enacting their 100-day plan to build an NRL club from the ground up.

It is a plan that proved to the ARL Commission that the club is ready to hit the ground running and started with confirmation from the ARLC the Dolphins had been granted the 17th NRL Club Licence Agreement on October 13.

Near the top of the list is securing a head coach, starting recruitment of players (from November 1) and building an administrative team to bring the dream to life.

The club expects to reveal further details on its NRL Dolphins brand this week and it is hoped major sponsors and the head coach will

be announced soon after.

The Dolphins met with ‘super coach’ Wayne Bennett at the club on Friday and discussions are ‘progressing nicely’, according to Chairman Bob Jones.

Queensland Cup feeder club agreements need to be developed with the expected addition of the CQ Capras as the club’s second QCUP affiliation with the Redcliffe Dolphins. The work then starts on ensuring the club can bring to life game development and elite pathways programs before 2023.

Also key to the plan is a regional tour of Central Queensland to investigate potential academy facilities and links to ensure there are pathways to create opportunities for boys and girls to grow the game.

The Dolphins will also work on a masterplan for the Redcliffe Precinct.

It follows an exhaustive

bid process that culminated in the ARL Commission voting unanimously to award the licence to the Dolphins.

NRL CEO Andrew Abdo said the Dolphins met all five key criteria: governance and risk, approach to financial strength, commercial strategy of the organisation, football competitiveness and growth of the game, participation and pathways.

He said expansion with the Dolphins was part of the Commission’s mission to stabilise, renovate and grow the game.

The Dolphins’ decision was ‘data-driven’ and followed careful research into the best way to grow the game in Queensland, targeting the fast-growing northern corridor.

Part of the deal is a $2 million per year investment by the club in participation and pathways to grow the

THERE has been much talk since the ARL Commission’s decision to award the 17th licence to the Dolphins about what the team will be called.

NRL CEO Andrew Abdo was blunt in his response to reporters’ questions about the name during his press conference on October 13.

“They will be The Dolphins,” he said.

“That’s part of the discussion we’ve had with them fairly recently. It’s important for us that we have a say in this because this is about the growth of the game and so we want to have an overall strategic lens to this.”

Mr Abdo said not adding a geographic tag would embrace a larger catchment north to Central Queensland.

Chairman Bob Jones said: “We’ll certainly be the Dolphins, we’ll always be the Dolphins”.

Moreton Bay Regional Council Mayor Peter Flan-

nery said he hoped the team’s name would reflect where they were based.

“We would love them to be called the Moreton Bay Dolphins, where else would you find Dolphins but in Moreton Bay and in the Moreton Bay Region. We’re the third largest local government area in Australia, we have 500,000 people living in our region so we would love them to be the Moreton Bay Dolphins,” Mayor Flannery said.

“They used the Dolphins as their bid wording, we were happy to go with that and now we’ll have those discussions and hopefully we can convince them that Moreton Bay Dolphins is the way to go.”

Mr Abdo said the club’s holistic approach, detailed plan to recruit coaching and playing staff and ability to stand on its own feet financially, from day one, were key factors.

Dolphins’ Chairman Bob Jones said the club was in talks with ‘super coach’ Wayne Bennett and was keen to lock in a coach who would build a team to make it competitive from day one.

“If you want to be the best in the land, you try to hire the best people in the land

… I would think that if Wayne’s not the best in the land, he’s right up there,” Mr Jones said.

“We’ve reached out to Wayne and those discussions are progressing nicely and hopefully in the next little while we’ll know what’s happening.

“We’re super excited and very thankful for all the work that our forebears have done in making the Dolphins what they are. We intend to do our very best and we do have lofty ambitions and we won’t rest until those ambitions are met.”

Dolphins NRL Bid Director Terry Reader said contrary to media reports, the Dolphins were not informed they had been successful until shortly after 9am on October 13.

Mr Murphy said bidding for the licence wasn’t a last-minute decision. It was years in the making and the club had been building a diverse asset base in readiness.

Local newspapers expand COMMUNITY newspapers will soon make a return to the Moreton Bay Region’s northern and southern districts, after a successful year publishing Dolphins News in the eastern pocket.

Moreton Bay Region Industry and Tourism (MBRIT) has been publishing Dolphins News for residents on the Redcliffe Peninsula, Deception Bay, North Lakes, Mango Hill and Griffin for the past 12 months.

MBRIT Chairman Shane Newcombe said Dolphins News would be rebranded as part of the expansion and all three papers would be known as Moreton Daily News. They will publish fortnightly.

brings people together.

Mr Newcombe said while the newspapers would share a masthead and philosophy, they would publish content specific to their communities.

“People have been telling us they need a community newspaper to keep them informed of what is happening around them. They want easy to access to news,

events and community sport. They also love reading about the community heroes making a difference and business success and innovation,” he said.

“Advertisers are also calling for an easier way to reach their customers, particularly those in trades and services. Moreton Daily News will take their message straight to households every fortnight.

“We are really excited about the expansion and look forward to giving readers a taste of what we can do, when we publish a special edition for the north and south districts on December 8. Full fortnightly distribution will

kick-off on February 2.”

The newspapers will be published by team of experienced journalists and advertising consultants.

Sprightly centenarian celebrates STORY JODIE POWELL AVID Scarborough Scrabble player Eileen Holmes marked her 100th birthday with two parties – one of which included a Zoom event with family in New Zealand.

“I have a daughter who lives in Yeerongpilly and we linked up with our family in New Zealand through Zoom,” Mrs Holmes explained.

“It was a lovely family celebration.”

Born on October 10, 1921, Mrs Holmes grew up in Woolwich, near London.

With her husband and two daughters, she spent 12 and a half years living in Zambia – then known as Northern Rhodesia.

“I was a clerk in the local council and my husband worked in the workshops of the copper mines,” Mrs Holmes said.

When their time in Africa ended in the 1960s, Mrs Holmes and her family moved to Australia, first to Bundaberg and later to the Redcliffe peninsula.

“The weather is better here than in England,” she laughed.

The sprightly Mrs Holmes recently had her driver’s licence renewed and lives on the second floor of a complex with no lift.

The centenarian also celebrated her milestone birthday with friends from the Redcliffe Scrabble Club.

A member of the club since 1986, Mrs Holmes has played in many tournaments at an intermediate level, amassing an impressive array of trophies.

“I love the game and the words – and the people I play with,” Mrs Holmes said.

Club president Trish Brighton said it was lovely to celebrate the occasion with a special cake.

Members used to take trips away and Mrs Brighton said Mrs Holmes had stunned everyone when she revealed a party trick.

“She was in her 70s and told us she could sit on the floor and bend to touch it with her head between her legs – and she did,” Mrs Brighton said.

Spotlight shines on live music FIFTY musicians will play at 11 local venues over two days across the region as part of the Moreton Bay Live & Local Micro-Festival.

The festival is part of the Live & Local program led by the Creative Arts Alliance and aims to celebrate and invigorate the local music industry.

The spotlight on live and local music continues at a music industry forum at North Lakes on November 2.

Mayor Peter Flannery said the Live & Local Music Recovery Project would help build a sustainable music industry in the region and shine a light on local arts and culture.

“Supporting our local musicians, performers and artists not only drives positive social and economic outcomes for our region, it gives people a musical extravaganza to invigorate the senses,” he said.

Local and emerging event producer Amy Kate Bryant said curating a local micro-festival had given her the chance to energise local artists and discover new opportunities to showcase live music across the region.

The free program features 31 family-friendly acts.

The Moreton Bay Live & Local Micro-Festival will present pop-up performances across Samford Village on October 30 and in Dayboro and Brendale on November 6.

The Music Industry Forum at North Lakes, will explore what’s working well, current challenges and areas for improvement.

It is on November 2, from 6-9pm at the North Lakes Community Centre, 10 The Corso, North Lakes.

QUEENSLAND Police have launched a survey seeking feedback about how they interact with the community.

Community Engagement Officer Senior Constable Jo Arthur said the Moreton Bay Region had taken part in a trial of the survey last year, with people who had

contacted police through Policelink, by phoning Triple Zero (000) or by visiting a police station asked for their feedback.

“The trial contacted people who had interacted with police up until February and now the survey is for people who have contacted us after

“It (the survey) gives us an indication of how we are performing with our response to calls and investigations.”

Acting Superintendent Rebecca Martin said the Community Experience Survey was an important

opportunity for the police service to hear feedback directly from the community and would pave the way for improving the way services were delivered.

“By conducting this survey, we are able to gain a snapshot of how our services are being received by those who matter

“We will use this feedback to inform future enhancements to the services provided as we continue to grow and respond to our state’s policing needs.”

STORY NICK CROCKFORD THE first Redcliffe Hospital Giving Day was a “roaring success” raising more than $150,000.

Donations poured in last Wednesday with every cent going to Redcliffe Hospital for health research, patient care, staff wellbeing, new equipment and other initiatives.

Among the donations was $50,000 from the Lewis Land Group, owners of The Belvedere and The Komo.

“When we looked to align ourselves with charities, we were approached by Raise it for Redcliffe (and) it really was a no-brainer,” Queensland Regional Manager Chris Allison said.

“The pleasure is all ours, it’s an absolute privilege.”

It was one of many do-

nations, of varying sizes, which flowed in, to the delight of organisers.

“Thank you to the generous people, businesses and community groups who made the first Redcliffe Hospital Giving day a roaring success,” RBWH Foundation CEO Simone Garske said.

“The atmosphere in the Giving Day phone room during the last couple of hours was electric, as we watched the tally pass our goal of $100,000 and reach $150,000.

“We can’t wait to report back to our community about the projects that can now happen.”

Fundraising Manager – Redcliffe Hospital, RBWH Foundation Sharyn Tidswell said it was “community at its best”.

“What the tally also rep-

resents is the engagement and trust of the Moreton Bay Region in Redcliffe Hospital and its dedicated health care workforce,” she said.

“Special thanks to 99.7 Bridge FM and their volunteer presenters who hosted an outdoor broadcast radiothon and everyone who fundraised, volunteered, got word out and donated.

“Redcliffe Hospital Giving Day would not have been possible without your support.”

One of the day’s highlights was the completion of a 500km penny farthing challenge by Redcliffe Hospital Director of Research and Medical Education Dr Joel Dulhunty.

Dr Dulhunty raised funds by riding 50 times around Redcliffe Hospital and five times across the Ted Smout Memorial Bridge.

New date for expo THE Longman Seniors Expos, at Bribie Island and Morayfield, have been moved back four weeks due to COVID restrictions in Queensland.

Fresher focus on customers STORY KYLIE KNIGHT THE team at Everfresh Food Market at Capestone Village wants to make grocery shopping an experience customers enjoy, with a large range of gourmet meats, cheese and groceries, a full bakery, real butchers and a focus on fresh food.

Owner and CEO Graham Booysen said the Mango Hill store was his third Everfresh outlet but the first purpose-built concept store. He has 31 other stores under the Cornetts Supermarkets banner across Queensland.

He said the Everfresh stores were different to an IGA store and the new store, which is 2000sqm, would open on October 30.

“The range is bigger and the space allocated to fresh is bigger, and then we also have a big range of gourmet grocery and gourmet deli – jars of pickles and

mustards and all that kind of stuff that adds value to food,” Mr Booysen said.

“We wanted something that when you walked in, it’s a great environment.

We don’t want people sitting at home on their computers ordering their groceries. That’s just boring.”

He said they were creating an environment which was inviting and provided great service.

It’s a 110-year-old recipe and it’s $8.99/kg. It’s a double-smoked Australian pork – it’s not infused stuff with juice to make it taste like ham,” he said.

“We have a lot of local products, a lot of local suppliers.”

One of those is Capestone Cupcakes, made by a local woman.

There will also be a huge range of baked goods made onsite in the full bakery including focaccias, French loaves and baked bread.

Customers will be able to buy roasted pork, lamb, and chicken, and choose from a selection of Beefy’s Pies.

There will be a large fresh produce section and butchery with butchers onsite.

“You can tell them exactly how thick you want it and you can watch them cut it up,” Mr Booysen said.

The store will also sell gifts, chocolates and flowers from Campbell and Bradley, based at the Sunshine Coast.

Bingo is life calling for Tim STORY KYLIE KNIGHT TIM Morris’s connection with bingo goes back to his teens when he would make coffee and sandwiches while the game was being played at a local club.

Now 34 years old, he is the Bingo Manager at Norths Leagues and Services Club at Kallangur and his entertaining style draws players from far and wide.

“My Nan and Pop used to work in bingo. I followed them and stuck with it. I kind of fell into it,” he said.

“If not for them, it was probably not something I would have considered.

“I was doing it when I was 18 years old and was one of the youngest callers and it developed over time.”

Mr Morris said the secret was making the game as entertaining as possible.

“I call the session live. Everything is live, entertaining and unique. If you stuff up, everyone knows about it,” he said.

His favourite calls are ‘top of the house 90 and all the ones, legs 11’.

“People come from all parts of Brisbane because of what he does,” Mr Bennett said.

“His passion comes through. It’s a lost art.”

And he’s sharing it with the next generation, with people of all ages playing – not just older members.

The club recently hosted a 19th birthday party at bingo.

They have a couple of special sessions including the ‘Power Hour’ on Sundays

which Mr Morris describes as the 20/20 of bingo. The sessions are shorter and the prizes are bigger. There are also ‘Treble’ sessions on Tuesday nights that run for an hour and a half.

He and his team run nine sessions a week with each attracting from 100 to as many as 650 people (pre-COVID).

Mr Morris said everyone knew each other and there was a family feel about it.

“It’s more of a social event. It’s its own little community,” he said.

“I think that’s what gets

the people back.”

There is usually a collective celebration when someone wins.

“There’s no, ‘I wish it was me’. There are so many chances to win and they’re happy to see a winner,” he said.

There are special sessions planned for the upcoming long weekend across four days starting on Thursday, October 28.

PLANS for a new independent school in North Lakes, lodged through a Ministerial Infrastructure Designation (MID), have not been endorsed by the State Government.

Eight hectares of land, which was part of North Lakes Resort Golf Club, had been earmarked by The Village Retirement Group (TVRG) for the school.

Residents living close to the site, between Endeavour Blvd and Diamond Jubilee Way, were informed of the school plan in mid-August.

The Save North Lakes Golf Course (SNLGC) lobby group collated electronically submitted objections to the proposal.

More than 1300 submissions against the development, at the southern end of the former golf course, were lodged with the State Government.

A Department of State Development, Infrastructure, Local Government and Planning spokesperson said: “JH

Northlakes Pty Ltd sought initial advice from the Department of State Development, Infrastructure, Local Government and Planning (the department) for a MID proposal in March 2021.

“In September 2021, the proponent sought endorsement to lodge a MID proposal. The department reviewed the supporting materials provided and a decision has been made to not support the MID proposal. The department decided to not support the MID proposal for reasons including that there is no identified funding for the development of the school.”

A spokesperson for The Village Retirement Group said: “We are still reviewing the advice from the State Government regarding the MID proposal. We are still preparing to lodge a DA for the Retirement Village, Aged Care, and North Lakes Common.”

“I’ve been a bit busier for sure,” he said.

“I knew how big the Olympics were, but I didn’t think it would give me as much publicity as it has.”

He said he had won many big events in BMX, but the Olympics gold had been next level.

“I wanted to show what freestyle BMX is to a bigger audience on a different level. I’ve had a lot of positive feedback which us awesome,” he said.

“There’s a lot more kids on bikes, building jumps in their backyards.”

It was that kind of backyard construction, hard work and dedication that resulted in his gold-medal

winning performance.

“With anything, you need to put in hard work and stay consistently with it and be fully dedicated to putting in the work,” Martin said.

“That work is different for everyone and each sport.”

Even though he had set himself the goal of competing well at the Tokyo Olympic Games, he still can’t believe he won a gold medal.

“To actually execute and do it is a different thing,” he said.

“It’s super cool. I won the first World Championship as well (in 2017), so to win the first Olympic gold medal as well is awesome.”

Now, it’s back on the bike preparing for other events on the BMX calendar and building on the work he’s done in the past eight years, since he has been competing seriously.

Those include the World Series, World Championships and X Games.

“The bigger goal is to get to Paris. To be a dual Olympian would be awesome,” Martin said.

He has come a long way since 2008-2009, when he remembers competing in a small event series called Core Series at Redcliffe, Albany Creek and other local skate parks.

Mr Hore said competitors aimed to jump as high as possible during a series of heats, with their height measured by a device attached to their boards.

A PETALS on the water ceremony and a field of mini women will be among the activities when the Redcliffe Pink Snapdragons Breast Cancer Dragon Boat Club hosts a Come and Try day.

Sonia Anger from the club said members were active in promoting breast cancer awareness through their participation in the sport of dragon boat racing and fundraising activities.

“Dragon boat paddling is physical exercise that is beneficial to recovery and demonstrates that there is life after breast cancer,” Ms Anger said.

“It not only improves physical health, but also assists with the emotional and social recovery after

a breast c a n c e r diagnosis.

“It is suitable for all ages and abilities.”

Ms Anger said breast cancer survivor dragon boat paddlers had the chance to compete in racing at local, national and international regattas.

Raising money and awareness STORY JODIE POWELL MORETON Bay Regional Prostate Cancer Support Group, in conjunction with the Urology department of Redcliffe Hospital recently held a fundraising event to raise awareness of prostate cancer and the need for men, 45 years and over, to have an annual check-up.

The other purpose of the event was to generate funds

for the group which supports men diagnosed with prostate cancer via monthly information evenings and social activities.

“We had 86 participants and 14 volunteer organisers and marshals traversing the course that gave us the exposure we were looking for. That was followed by a breakfast at the Belvedere Hotel which was excellent and enjoyed by everyone.

Fun was added to the breakfast by lucky door prizes and a short raffle.”

Club president Marie Stewart said their address would highlight the work of the foundation, which honours the memories of Hannah Clarke and her children Aaliyah, Laianah and Trey, who were killed by Hannah’s estranged husband in an horrific family violence attack.

Determined that no other family should endure their pain, the Clarkes started a movement for change – Small Steps 4 Hannah – in a bid to halt domestic and family violence in Australia.

The family hopes to harness the collective desire to make positive change to stop domestic and family violence and take the steps required to do it.

Home is where the heart is HUSBAND and wife of 52 years and Beaumont Care Clontarf residents, Steve and Irene, love the fact they could still live together in the same room when health issues meant that it was time to move and have extra care and support around them.

“I like that we are able to share a room here, so don’t ever get lonely because we have each other to talk to,” Irene said.

“Our room is homely, and we have everything we need including our cd collection to listen to.”

While also participating in the activities that the community has to offer, such as exercise classes, knitting and bus trips, Irene spends her spare time sewing while Steve enjoys Soduko.

“I’ve made plenty of Easter bags and Christmas bags and given them to my grandchildren. I also knit coat hangers and have even written about the history of my life,” Irene said.

Milestone for first parkrun STORY NICK CROCKFORD NINE years ago today, 46 enthusiasts lined up at Lake Eden, North Lakes, for the first parkrun in the Moreton Bay Region.

It was a humble start for the free 5km events enjoyed each week by thousands of walkers, joggers and runners − from the age of four to 84, some pushing prams and walking dogs.

There are now 10 centres in our region − the newest being Nathan Road Sports Ground Parkrun, at Kippa-Ring, which launched 18 days ago with 152 starters.

It followed Warner Lakes, Petrie and Central Lakes (2015), Redcliffe (2016), North Harbour (2017), Ocean View (2018), Harris Ave, Narangba (2019), and SS Koopa Trail on Bribie Island (2021).

North Lakes grew to more than 300 a week (preCOVID) − though it now averages 160 following lockdowns. Some regulars have done 250 runs, others 300.

Mark and Kelly Chapman started the newest parkrun at Nathan Road.

“We moved to Newport recently and have found there to be an incredible

sense of community in the area,” Mr Kelly, Run Director, said. “We saw parkrun as an opportunity for residents to come together, meet and get active.”

Pre-COVID, Redcliffe was averaging 220-230 finishers each week. Since restarting last year the number is 160, including octogenarian Beryl Doocey.

Petrie Parkrun was the third in this region and averages 110 participants each week.

“Now, through the connections from parkrun, we have started the Sweeney Runners who also meet regularly for runs during the week,” Event Director Belinda Café said.

Harris Ave Parkrun began two years ago. “Despite trying to keep it quiet and have a soft opening, 342 participants turned up,” Event Director Tony Martin said. “Weekly numbers were 100-150 before COVID, but are now 80-100.

“Parkrun is an important part of the community, in regards to mental health and community awareness as there are volunteer roles every week, as well as the exercise component.”

Support with purpose and social connection: People are social creatures and therefore need community involvement and community leaders to mentor and foster participation and belonging. This involves intergenerational collaboration to heal. No matter your age, you have something good to offer.

Know more: Education on trauma and mental ill health is vital, especially recognising its impact on daily living and the wider community.

How to recognise and respond: It’s important to look for risk factors which may include a change in someone’s behaviour e.g. social withdrawal, unhelpful choices, and/or less than usual interest in daily activities. However, these behaviours are not always easy to recognise and can sometimes be passed off as a ‘bad day’ or simply a ‘phase’.

Tips for providing support: Be honest about your concerns for the person you are worried for and validate (name) the pain/concerns you witness/ listen to. Don’t provide solutions, just listen.

STORY JODIE POWELL FIVE crafty North Lakes Lions Club members have been acting as Santa’s little helpers, creating a swag of decorations for women and children affected by domestic and family violence.

Carolyn Brown said the Happy Crafters had worked for more than a month to create 40 decorations to

accompany hampers being prepared by Domestic Abuse Recovery Education (DARE) Formal Wear.

The Happy Crafters meet once a month, and often base their work on a charity or cause.

Maryann Hughes said each of the group used their own creativity to make decorations that suited their crafting interests.

“At one of the craft sessions we had one of Carolyn’s neighbours taught us macrame, so I used that as inspiration and found patterns on Pinterest,” Ms Hughes said.

“They’re made with love – I was thinking about who it might be going to, about when it gets opened and hoping they will think that someone cares.”

Carolyn Hyde said she was delighted to be taking part in something that would give a little cheer.

“They’re the sort of things they (the recipients) can keep for years,” she said.

MORE than 300 performers will bring glitz, glamour and vivacious energy to Lake Kawana for the Buskers by the Lake Festival later this month. Among them will be Redcliffe musician Ky Lovell.

The event is part of a program of music events, which kick-off on October 29 with Battle of the Buskers at Eleven Dive Bar, Maroochydore.

The festival itself is on October 30 and 31 at Lake Kawana, Sunshine Coast Stadium.

The multi-award-winning event is celebrated for breaking boundaries, attempting world records and providing opportunity for anyone despite their age, ability or disability.

It showcases everything from comedy, circus stunts and sword swallowing, to award-winning musicians and emerging talent.

Young artists shine THE work of dozens of young creatives from across the Moreton Bay Region is on show for the 2021 Moreton Bay Region Youth Art Awards.

More than 300 young artists created new pieces for the awards, with works on display at the Strathpine Community Centre until October 24.

School Visionary students vying for finals

Seeing red for a good cause MANGO Hill State School pupils raised almost $7500 for Cystic Fibrosis Queensland during its GO Red for CF day on October 8.

The entire student group, 1520 students, wore red, took on an obstacle course and learnt more about the

condition in class.

Each made a gold coin donation and many secured sponsors for the event.

Principal Tracy Egan thanked Cindy Clenton for being the main organiser of the event.

“Her son Noah won

Young Fundraiser of the year award at CFQ’s diamond jubilee night early this year,” Ms Egan said.

“We have a number of students and community members who have CF so we have raised money for this cause for 10 years.”

FIVE Moreton Bay Region schools have made the national semi-finals of the Future Anything Awards.

This year more than 45 schools across Australia took part in the Future Anything Activate school entrepreneurship program.

Students were challenged to create businesses to make the world a better place.

A Year 9 team from Redcliffe State High School is among the semi-finalists who will pitch their business to a panel of judges online on October 25.

Chloe’s Heat Wheats has created lavender wheat heat bags covered in “cool and funky materials”.

North Lakes State College’s Year 8 team will pitch their idea virtually in the second day of semi-finals on October 28.

The team developed Planttoys, a company that wants to create fun plastic toys which do not have a negative environmental impact.

Three Bribie Island State High School Year 8 teams have also made the semi-finals and will make their pitches on October 28.

Natural Technologies is an ecofriendly business that replaces modern technologies with sustainable options.

ReamCycle recycles reams of paper to combat waste.

The school’s third team, Eco Boards, aims to reduce the number of trees cut down to make skateboards.

All the teams are vying for a place in the national grand final, where they can win funding to launch their ideas.

Celebrating 25 years in business STORY KYLIE KNIGHT MICHAEL Connolly’s business Dreamtime Kullilla Art has come a long way in the 25 years since he started it with just a card table, tarp and 10 digeridoos.

With the support of wife Jo, he has developed as a businessman and artist taking his work around the world, opening his new Clontarf gallery in the middle of a pandemic and reaching new customers with a booming online store. Going pink for breast cancer fundraiser

Cactus Jacks Redcliffe’s Rob Griffiths with Lisa and David Dring who have helped him secure major prizes for the raffle.

THE team at Cactus Jacks Redcliffe are embracing the colour pink as they aim to raise $10,000 for The National Breast Cancer Foundation.

Owner Rob Griffiths has dyed his hair pink, tickets in a monster raffle are for sale and the venue is hosting an event to October 31 to celebrate the campaign and draw the winners.

Mr Griffiths said the cause was close to his heart.

“My mum had breast cancer, now thankfully is in clear. And one of our favourite and most loyal customers has had her own battles with breast cancer this year,” he said.

of 55 diagnosed every day in Australia.

“We have chosen to support The National Breast Cancer Foundation. They have a goal of zero deaths by 2030 from breast cancer. We are aiming to raise $10,000 and this money will go towards research that will assist with this goal.”

INSPIRED by a hot flush and a bottle of wine, Menopause the Musical is a celebration of women who are on the brink of, in the middle of, or have survived ‘the change’ and it’s coming to Redcliffe as part of a 20th anniversary tour.

The show, which is the longestrunning scripted musical in Las Vegas history, will be staged at Redcliffe Entertainment Centre on November 2 at 7.30pm and November 3 at 2pm and 7.30pm.

In the musical, four very different women, a ‘Gympie housewife’, ‘Soapstar’, ‘Professional Woman’, and ‘Earth Mother’ meet at a lingerie sale.

“You can hear women in the audience identify who they are, or women they know,” Wheeler said.

She said the ‘Gympie housewife’ was naïve and more reserved than the other women.

“Somehow, throughout the show, they discover they have

a lot in common. They’re all women trying to get through life and everything that it throws at us,” Wheeler said “I hope the audience will be endeared to the ‘Gympie housewife’. She has the biggest learning in the story. The other women teach her and bring her out of her shell.”

Wheeler toured with the show in 2019, performing in Queensland, Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia.

She said there were big plans for 2020 and this year, but COVID-19 restrictions had forced performances to be cancelled and rescheduled.

“We’re back together now with a smaller tour than we envisaged.

Queensland is the place to be on stage at the moment,” Wheeler said.

The actor, who grew up on the

Redcliffe peninsula, is looking forward to performing again at Redcliffe Entertainment Centre.

It is a place she remembers performing at during her time at Sharon Alback Dance Centre and she even recalls watching her daughter perform there as well.

“It’s a nice, happy place for me to be performing,” Wheeler said.

She is expecting to see some familiar faces in the audience, with many friends still living in the area and at North Lakes.

Her stint with Menopause the Musical is a comeback, of sorts.

She has been singing and dancing since she was 10 years old and did corporate work with a jazz big band before buying Fame Theatre Company in 2006.

“Between being a businesswoman and being a mum … it’s kept me pretty busy.

It’s now my time to allow myself to do these things. I love being on stage and performing,” she says.

And to be part of a show that has been touring for 20 years is pretty special.

She said everyone knew a woman or experience depicted in the show and the men, usually dragged there by their wives, could also relate to the story.

“They love it. I think it just starts a conversation with people … we’re all different and from different walks of life, but at the end of the day it’s something we’re all going through … that passage of life,” Wheeler said.

“I cannot think of a more joyous show to watch and to have a good night out. The world is very serious and heavy at the moment. It’s good to feel some lightness.”

Devil’s in the

growing detail

WITH an abundance of trailing leafy growth doused with splashes of colour, devil's ivy is the perfect indoor plant and best of all, you can propagate this trendy vine yourself.

The experts at Bunnings have shared expert tips for planting, growing and propagating golden pothos, epipremnum aureum.

It is a lush and hardy plant that can survive in minimal light and is almost impossible to kill.

The evergreen trailing vine will thrive all year round, although variegated varieties may lose their colour in low-light conditions.

Devil's ivy can be grown as a ground cover, in hanging baskets, in containers or along walls. It will grow to around 6m, but up to 20m in the wild.

A word of warning though, the plant is poisonous to cats and dogs, and harmful to humans if ingested. Avoid placing devil's ivy on the floor inside if this is a significant risk. Instead, place it up high within a hanging basket, or on a shelf.

How to plant and grow devil's ivy

Devil's ivy will flourish in a range of soil types from acidic to alkaline. The soil should not be left overly wet, as this encourages root rot. It is best to allow the surface of the soil to dry out completely before watering again. Do not be concerned about

underwatering, as epipremnums only require minimal watering, and can withstand dry periods and neglect.

When planted in indoor environments, devil's ivy requires a premium standard potting mix with additional sphagnum moss or cocopeat to maintain health and vigour.

Caring for devil's ivy

When planting, mix in a controlled-release fertiliser to nourish the growth of the vine.

You can also use a soluble liquid fertiliser during the warmer seasons of growth but not during the cold and wet winter months.

How and when to prune devil's ivy

Trimming back the trailing stems is essential to control and enhance the plant's shape, otherwise this species, which is invasive in some tropical areas, may take over. To ensure it does not grow too big, regularly trim the stem of the plant, always leaving a healthy piece of foliage at the end. Yellowed leaves are

often the result of over-watering and can be easily removed simply by bending them back until they snap.

Diseases and pests

Devil's ivy is mostly resilient to diseases and pests, with most problems related to the soil.

Other issues stem from bacterial or fungal infections such as root rot, and leaf spots from excessive over watering throughout the growing season. Limp and curled foliage originate from inconsistent drops in temperature, cold air below 10°C or lack of water.

Spider mites and mealy bugs pose a significant issue, but this is easily solved by simply spraying the foliage with a garden insecticide. Repeat this in two weeks to completely eradicate the problem.

Devil's ivy propagation

Cut a piece of stem or stem tips below a node. Submerge its base in water for up to two weeks to root.

Once shoots have become visible,

plant the vine into soil to grow.

Long trailing stems with aerial roots can be cut off and placed in a seed and cutting mix or a 50:50 peat and coarse propagating sand. Alternatively, they may be

pegged down into pots of seed and cutting mix with wire or hair clips. When they have formed a sufficient root system, they may be cut off from the parent plant and treated individually.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT DEVIL'S IVY HEIGHT: height and spread can reach 4 or 6m, however as a trailing species this greatly varies FOLIAGE: evergreen, glossy, green, marbled or variegated heart-shaped leaves, depending on the species or cultivar.

CLIMATE: originates from tropical and temperate regions but will thrive indoors in most climates.

SOIL: a light, porous, aerated and well-drained soil is required to keep the roots moist but not soggy, usually containing peat moss or coco peat.

POSITION: grows well in full to partial shade outdoors. Indoors,

devil's ivy thrives with bright light but will also grow in low-light conditions.

FLOWERING AND FRUITING: rarely flowers when placed indoors.

Outdoors, flowering of the purple/ green spathes only occurs in the mature phase.

FEEDING: use a controlled-release fertiliser upon planting. Alternatively, using a liquid fertiliser is beneficial every few times it is watered.

WATERING: keep moist but allow the surface of the potting mix or soil to dry out between each watering. Usually once a week for indoor plants.

with Seasons Avocados are in season and the perfect way to add wow factor to entertaining with family and friends. Here’s a couple of finger food options to get you started.

Avocado and salmon inside out sushi rolls

MEAL PLANNER Monday

Method

1. Combine sushi rice and cold

Ingredients • 3 small, firm, ripe hass avocados • 1 cup sushi rice, well-rinsed • 1¼ cups cold water • ⅓ cup sushi seasoning • 2 nori sheets, halved

• 3 tsp wasabi paste, or to taste • 200g piece skinless, boneless salmon fillet, cut into strips • Soy sauce, togarashi and mixed sesame seeds, to serve

water in a saucepan over medium heat. Bring to the boil, reduce heat to low and cover with a tight-fitting lid.

Simmer for 12 minutes, turn off heat and stand without uncovering for 10 minutes.

2. Transfer to a bowl, stir to break up rice, then drizzle with sushi seasoning, gently lifting and turning the rice until incorporated. Spread on a plastic tray to cool to room temperature.

3. Halve one avocado, scoop the flesh in one piece and cut into strips.

4. Place one piece of nori on a bamboo sushi mat. Using damp fingers, spread a quarter of the rice evenly over nori, then lay a piece of plastic wrap over the rice.

5. Turn the sushi mat over, so the nori faces up, then slide the plastic onto the mat, nori-side up. Dab a little wasabi paste along the centre of the nori,

then arrange a quarter of the avocado strips and a quarter of the salmon over the wasabi.

6. Using the mat, roll up firmly to form a cylinder. Unroll the mat, keeping plastic intact and set the cylinder aside. Repeat with remaining nori, rice, wasabi, avocado strips and salmon.

7. Halve the remaining avocados, remove the seeds and use a large spoon to scoop the flesh from the skin in one piece. Thinly slice each half crossways into half-moons, then fan out to overlap slightly.

8. Use a large knife to lift the avocado and place on top of each sushi roll. Place a piece of plastic wrap on top, cover with the sushi mat and squeeze gently to shape the avocado around the roll.

9. Slice each sushi roll into six pieces, scatter with togarashi and sesame seeds and serve with soy sauce for dipping.

3. Place breadcrumbs in a second shallow plate and season with sea salt

PROSPECTING and exploring: While we usually try different areas of a new location we visit, we can tend to be creatures of habit when fishing somewhere we regularly go and as a result, may be missing opportunities at fish. Many locations will have smaller individual areas that may only hold transient fish for a short period of the day or tide before they move on to the next. If we keep fishing one area after activity has ceased, we're potentially fishing dead water for some time before the next window appears back in the same spot.

If activity slows or stops, it may not mean that the fish have gone off the bite but that they've relocated to another close spot we're they're just as active for whatever reason, be it tidal run, proximity of cover, lack of predators or availability of food.

If I observe a slowing of activity, this is when I start prospecting around by working casts all around the area I've been fishing. In the case of bait fishing, by slowly retrieving my bait through the entire area, as opposed to simply plonking it out and hoping the fish stumble across it is more successful. Cover the country.

If the fish aren't there, or are there and aren't active, there's a reason.

I believe that part of lure fishing's effectiveness in some scenarios is that this type of fishing lends itself to this prospecting principle.

We cover significantly larger areas due to the cast and retrieve nature of lures, but for some reason, we tend not to apply the same principle when using

bait. Even though bait has the advantage of scent we're still increasing our potential success by covering a larger area than keeping our offering stationary.

By being proactive, prospecting and hunting for our target species, we give ourselves a marked advantage over those who don't. And you never know, we might just stumble across our next, ‘secret spot’.

FISHING REPORT • Not a lot of feedback this edition as the weather hasn't been playing the game.

• Summer whiting are patchy but some solid fish for those willing to put in the time and cover the ground.

• A couple of very nice bags of bream off some of the rocky points, with fish into the early 40cms.

• A few flathead in the Pine River, Hays Inlet and the smaller creeks.

• Some fringe fin trevally and GTs in Bramble Bay and also off Scarborough in Deception Bay. • A few bonito cruising Bramble Bay and the inshore reefs.

• Squire, snapper and some grassy sweetlip on the inshore reefs and off a couple of the rocky points around the peninsula.

Dolphins!!!! Let’s celebrate the announcement of the 17th NRL team with a discussion about dolphins.

Dolphins (along with whales) belong to a group of animals called Cetaceans. They are descendants of hippopotamuslike animals.

There are two species that are resident in the Moreton Bay Region – the Australian humpback dolphin and the bottlenose dolphin.

These two species can be distinguished visually by the fact that the former is light grey and has a shorter dorsal fin, while the latter has a much higher dorsal fin and is dark grey in colour. Both species can occur throughout Moreton Bay, but they have different habitat preferences.

Australian humpback dolphins associate with inshore habitats and are common on the western side of Moreton Bay. Bramble Bay is one of their favourite locations.

Moreton Bay contains the southernmost population of this species on the Australian east coast. The species was thought to be the same as the one that occurs widely throughout South East Asia, but it is now known to only occur in Australia. It’s as unique as the koala! The population in Moreton Bay consists of somewhere between 100 and 160 animals. This is small in absolute terms, but large for the species in relative terms. The population of IndoPacific humpback dolphins in Moreton Bay is discrete, with limited genetic mixing with populations elsewhere.

Bottlenose dolphins in South East Queensland region prefer the central and eastern side of Moreton Bay and Point Lookout – although they can occur anywhere. The bottlenose dolphins at Point Lookout form large schools and constitute a discrete community with very small home ranges. The bottlenose

DR DAZZA dolphin population at Point Lookout is the largest resident population of the species in the world and is estimated to number between 700 and 1000 animals.

Dolphins are a sacred totem for the Quandamooka people of Moreton Bay and are called Buangan by them. Prior to European arrival, dolphins and Quandamooka cooperatively hunted together for sea mullet and other species.

Dolphins are a focus of ecotourism activities in Moreton Bay (and elsewhere). Such activities have been shown to have negative effects on dolphins; in particular, food provisioning can result in increased mortality rates through mothers neglecting their calves, resulting in calf malnourishment and death by disease or shark bite. While regulated feeding activities at Tangalooma have not been implicated in negative impacts, there are concerns that unregulated feeding activities, such as those that occur at Amity Point, may result in negative impacts on dolphins in Moreton Bay, as has been documented elsewhere.

Coastal dolphins are particularly vulnerable to the exposure and accumulation of contaminants as a result of them being resident in an area, long lifespan, position within the food chain and large fat repositories that can serve as deposits for contaminants. The effect of such contamination is not known with certainty, although impacts on health are likely.

One-Eyed Dolphin Real Estate The big news of the last week has obviously been the Dolphin’s winning entry into the NRL competition. The NRL bid win may have dominated conversation at the Dolphins’ Senior Awards Night at Redcliffe Leagues Club, but it did not detract from the buzz around the club’s current crop of players.

Dolphins’ Chairman Bob Jones thanked everyone in the room for their part in making the club’s NRL dream a reality including players

who had upheld high standards of behaviour and performance.

Mr Jones said Intrust Super Cup side coach Adam Mogg and his coaching team strived for excellence and had done the club proud. He also paid tribute to Colts coach Scott Murray, the Red and White supporters group and long-time sponsor Marlene Newcombe who will be joining the club’s NRL board.

Hastings Deering Colts coach Scott Murray said it had been a big season, but there had been disruption with COVID-19 restrictions and injury.

“I’m disappointed with the way it ended. I thought we had the team, if we made the Grand Final, we could have come away with the premiership,” he said.

Murray said he was proud to see five players make the Intrust Super Cup side throughout the season and there were a number who could easily play at a higher level in the future.

“The club is in good hands.

There’s some talented kids (coming through),” he said.

It’s a sentiment echoed

by Intrust Super Cup team coach Adam Mogg who said watching younger players step up had been a highlight.

Mogg thanked the Vodafone Warriors for their assistance throughout the season and their players who “bought into the cause”.

He is looking forward to working with them next season and can see more “kids going into the NRL as a result”.

“We will benefit from the Warriors’ strong roster next year,” he said.

Redcliffe Hockey Club is hosting the annual Brett Forte Memorial Match against the Emergency Services on Saturday, 10.30am.

Senior Constable Forte who grew up on the Peninsula and played for Redcliffe, was shot and died on duty.

Late wickets prove costly PENINSULA suffered a late collapse to lose on first innings against Napoleons in their Round Three match of the new Community Cricket Championship.

Jonah Graham top scored with 35 as Peninsula reached 5-136 in reply to Napoleons’ 177, with Nick Turner taking 4-50 and Steven Rees 3-28.

But, Peninsula lost five wickets for 13 runs to finish on 149. Luke Hedger made 32. Napoleons were 3-77 in their second innings.

It followed a Round Two victory over Indooroopilly. Peninsula hit 305 and skittled their opponents for 163 to win on first innings.

The CCC is a new league comprising the top four clubs from the Warehouse Cricket Association and Sub Districts in first and second grade.

Coach Reid on top of world STORY NICK CROCKFORD GRAHAM Reid, the former Redcliffe player-coach, has been named International Hockey Federation (FIH) men’s Coach of the Year.

Reid, 57, pictured left, took the title after guiding India to its first Olympic hockey men’s medal in more than 40 years at this year’s Tokyo Games.

The bronze medal, coming from 3-1 down to beat Germany 5-4, capped a

remarkable 18 months in which Reid has transformed the Indian team.

It also ended a 41-year wait for a nation which had eight Olympic hockey gold medals, but not even a semi-final appearance since 1980.

A four-time Olympian, Reid grew up in Redcliffe and was a junior at Redcliffe Leagues Hockey Club.

He won the Brisbane Hockey Association Best & Fairest Medal as a Redcliffe

player in 1983 and six years later the Brisbane Division One championship as Redcliffe’s player-coach.

Reid is one of only two players to win league player of the year awards in Brisbane and Perth (1995, 1996 and 1998) and is in the Hockey Queensland Hall of Fame.

He played 130 games for Australia from 1984 to 1992, winning the 1990 World Cup and an Olympic Games silver medal in 1992.

Reid coached the Australian Kookaburras national men's team from 2014-16, winning a Commonwealth Games gold medal in 2014.

He has also been to the Olympics twice as a player (1988 and 1992) and twice as coach (2016 with Australia; 2020 with India).

Under Reid's coaching, India has climbed to third in the FIH world rankings, their highest position since the inception of the world PARKER Ryan, from PK rankings in 2003.

Taekwondo in North Lakes, made a remarkable competitive debut at the Brisbane Open at Nathan on October 3.

He won two gold medals in Sparring and a trophy for the ‘Outstanding Youth’ in his first competition.

Olympic swim star joins Open Day fun CATE Campbell, one of Australia’s greatest swimmers, was the special guest at Southern Cross Swimming Club’s Open Day on Saturday.

The 29-year-old triple Olympian spoke to a packed Scarborough pool, answered questions, signed autographs and posed for pictures with excited club members.

Campbell has multiple world records to her credit as well as four Olympic gold medals from 2012 in London, 2016 in Rio and 2020 in Tokyo.

She also has four World Championship gold medals, nine Pan Pacific golds, six Commonwealth golds and 14 silver or bronze medals from the top championships Campbell follows Tokyo Olympic champion Ariarne Titmus and Mitch Larkin, also a World, Pan Pacific and Commonwealth champion, as special guests at previous Southern Cross Open Days.

Nate second in Stampede NATE Wood added a hardfought second to his growing list of speedway go-kart honours at the weekend.

The nine-year-old from Woody Point was runner-up in the Sub Junior Stampede at Maryborough.

THE proposed merger of The Lakes FC and North Lakes Mustangs is about to take another sizeable step forward.

A merger steering committee, assembled by the two football clubs, will engage Alliance Planning to help with the compliance and regulatory process involved.

It follows meetings since the merge plan was announced in January, at which the common goals of both organisations were confirmed.

However, both clubs will retain their separate identities next season, when work is expected to start on a $450,000 extension to the Kinsellas Rd clubhouse with new spectator seating and shade.

The funding is part of the State Government’s SouthEast Queensland Community Stimulus Program.

“The merged club will aim to offer the highest levels of football for men, women and juniors (state-level NPL/ NPLW), while still having at its core community football in junior divisionals and Miniroo (Under 6-Under 11),” said Mustangs’ President Tony Swifte.

“The strong representation in Over 35 men will remain, with Over 30 women’s teams on the horizon.

“The clubs will retain their current identities for 2022 while actively working together to offer joint come-and-try days, gala days and events.

“The clubs will host a second in-house Miniroos carnival for the year this weekend and intend to run at least two carnivals in 2022.”

Swifte said the clubs were also working on grant applications together and this has been enhanced by the Kinsellas Facility Development Master Plan, which has the long-term vision for the new club’s home ground.

Lakes bow out in semi-final

THE Lakes FC just missed out on a place in the Premier League grand final.

A hat-trick from Patrick Theodore led hosts Bayside United to a 5-2 victory.

The Lakes’ top scorers Daniel Fogerty and Josh Fearn replied - with their 30th and 18th goals of the season respectively.

The Lakes had finished third in its first season in Football Brisbane’s top flight and seems set to be in FQPL3 under next year’s new Football Queensland structure.

TEN months ago, Peninsula Power’s players had four main goals. Three of those boxes have now been ticked – just one remains.

The latest came on Saturday night when Power were crowned NPL Qld Premiers for the second successive season.

Power has dominated the state’s top football tier, leading from the first round and only surrendering top spot for two weeks when a match was postponed.

The title was secured with a 3-0 win over Easts on October 9 and celebrated with the Premiers’ trophy and medals, after going down 5-3 to Gold Coast United, at AJ Kelly Park on Saturday.

Power travels to Sunshine Coast Wanderers on Sunday in their final match of the regular season. Lions, Wanderers or Olympic are likely to be their semi-final opponents, depending on this weekend’s results.

“Before the season the players said they wanted the Foundation Cup (traditional Round One fixture between NPL and FQPL Premiers), the last 32 of the FFA Cup, the league title and grand final,” coach Aaron Philp said.

“Three from three so far … now we can concentrate of the finals and rest a few players.”

Power seemed certain to retain the premiership for months, but Philp, who joined the club in 2016, said it was “never certain”.

“Every team in this league is good,” he said, “it’s always tough to win the league. I would have liked to have got it done a few weeks ago.”

Power had a slight wobble after their FFA Cup clash with Brisbane Roar in mid-September, taking one point from three games, losing to Lions and Gold Coast Knights – and drawing at Strikers.

Feuerriegel said the club’s goals when leaving Brisbane’s Premier League (BPL) for the NPL Qld at the end of 2017 season were simple.

“It was to represent our community at the highest level of football in Queensland,” the president said.

“To give our players, sponsors and supporters

the opportunity to represent and be a part of the best football state level competition at their club.”

Four years later: “The National Second Division continues evolve through working groups at the national level,” Feuerriegel said.

“Our interest to be a part of this has not changed and we await the outcome from Football Australia.

“As with any competition that our club enters into, we want to be successful Power President Craig Feuerriegel and win trophies.”

“Next year? No-one has ever done three (Premierships),” Philp said. “That would be very, very difficult.”

“I think it has been a natural progression,” the 33-year-old said, “the club has always been very supportive of the playing group and provided great facilities for us.

“That has helped us grow and be successful. Winning is a habit, but we work hard and that can help you through tough matches and tough times.

“I also think we learned from mistakes in that first season in the NPL (2019).”

Power won their first 14

matches and were eight points clear at the top, but injuries struck and they finished Club Captain third.

“We lost a Trent McEvoy few players and fell away that season,” McEvoy said, “it was a big learning curve for the team.

“This season we’ve had injuries, boys out with ACLs, but the depth of the squad has been excellent.”

McEvoy was one of the

casualties, picking up a serious ankle injury in the play-off semi-final defeat

by Lions last year.

He returned at the end of August this season – ironically in a home defeat by Lions, but it had no impact on the final destination of the Premiers’ trophy.

“It’s great to be back playing,” McEvoy said, “I’ve watched the boys go to another level this season and all credit to them.

“They have been so strong right from day one, beating Logan (5-1) and it has built and built from there.”

Success despite final loss THERE was no grandstand finish for Redcliffe Dolphins Soccer Club at the weekend.

Formerly Redcliffe PCYC before a name change this year, Dolphins went down 3-0 in a physical game to premiers North Brisbane in Saturday’s grand final.

Senior Team Manager Laura Herkes said the “hard work and effort didn’t show on the scoreboard”.

“The Phins played their hearts out for each other and for the supporters and mini roos that came along to Perry Park to cheer them on,” Herkes said.

“All season they have worked towards promotion and just setting foot on the field at the Grand Final was already a win for the boys!

“It’s not all losses though, the boys fought hard this year and came away with the biggest prize of them all!”

They beat Clairvaux 5-1 in the final match of the regular season to snatch second place in Capital League 2.

That earned ‘Phins a place in the new Football Queensland Premier League Four (FQPL4) – equivalent to Football Brisbane Capital League 1 - under a restructure.

It will be the highest league the club has ever played in.
