Padres pitcher hits big time

As 40th birthdays go, Mango Hill kept it low-key – which is a far cry from the suburb’s remarkable transformation over the last four decades. From a few hundred houses, acreage blocks, no town water and just two lanes on Anzac Ave, it’s had one of the fastest growth spurts in the state.

PHOTO DOMINIKA LIS | Stuart Matthews, Ted Heyes and William Kelly from Redcliffe Central Lions are ready to get to work on this year’s Christmas Wishes.

Granting Christmas wishes STORY KYLIE KNIGHT FOR almost four decades, the Redcliffe Central Lions and Lioness Clubs have been granting Christmas wishes for older residents across the peninsula. They are sharpening their tools, dusting off their work clothes and readying themselves for another round of tasks in the lead-up to the festive season. Redcliffe Central Li-

ons president Ted Heyes said it was one of the first groups in Australia to run the program, which one of its members had seen in action in New Zealand 39 years ago. Last year, its members granted 40 wishes. These ranged from gardening and mowing, window cleaning, washing and vacuuming cars, doing small dump runs, handing out Christmas cakes, or arranging a fishing trip or a drive.

The tasks must be small jobs the dedicated team of 15 members can handle. “If someone wants a cup of tea and a chat, we’ll even do that,” Mr Heyes said. “At Christmas, a lot of people are on their own and can’t afford to buy stuff, so we try to give back to them. They’re all pretty happy. We get several thankyou cards each year.” Requests will only be accepted up to November 15 and tasks will be scheduled

to be completed across a number of weekends. “We all get a big buzz out of it. It’s a real pleasure to give back to the community and for people that are in less fortunate positions than us,” Anyone interested in joining the club, can phone Mr Heyes on 0414 512 444. To make a wish, turn to page 34, complete the coupon and mail it to Lions Wish, PO Box 462, Redcliffe, QLD 4020.

P.3 // NEWS BRIEF HISTORY A subdivision in what is now Mango Hill dates back to the 1880s when the area was called Campbelltown. At this time there were plans to make it a town to English migrants. Subdivisions resumed in the early 1970s without town water, sewerage or bitumen roads but became popular with younger couples looking for cheaper land. By 1990 there were 257 houses. The area was known as Mango Hill in the 1950s, but it wasn’t until September 1, 1980 that the name of Mango Hill was formally decreed.

Village vibe remains PHOTOS DOMINIKA LIS | Karin Sutinder and Harvinder Singh, Laurence Christie, Marcia and Bob Dolley celebrate Mango Hill’s 40th birthday.

STORY NICK CROCKFORD MANGO Hill has had one of the fastest growth spurts in the state. But throughout four remarkable decades, one thing has never changed – residents’ determination to preserve their village lifestyle. “I hope village feel is still here in 20 years,” Mango Hill Progress Association President Laurence Christie said. “A community needs to own and run its community, not leave it to outside forces.” Mr Christie is planning ahead. He’s bought a smaller house, right next door to his current home, to move into when he has to downsize. “I just don’t want to leave, Mango Hill,” he said. “I love the village environment. I love the people.”

Bob Dooley feels the same way. He has lived in Mango Hill Village for 43 years, slightly longer than Mr Christie. When he arrived, rates were $300 a year and the nearest shops were in Strathpine. “Now everything is close to us,” Mr Dooley said. Debbie Garth and husband Cameron extended the family home, rather than leave, so their youngest daughter had the same experience growing up as their two older children. Sutinder and Harvinder Singh moved to Mango Hill two years ago from NSW, and love the area, saying they settled in quickly. Yet the suburb of today is a far cry from September 1, 1980, when Mango Hill was officially decreed – the name chosen ahead of other suggestions including

Pine View and Palm View. Mango Hill village was the only collection of houses between Kippa-Ring and Kallangur, but Rothwell was starting to grow - and North Lakes would soon arrive. As the rate of change increased, the role of Mango Hill Progress Association, which has never been anti-development, grew to help preserve the area’s lifestyle. “There was a time when the (Mango Hill) village could have been incorporated as part of North Lakes,” Mr Christie said. “The progress association said no. We argued for a buffer zone, a green belt around village. Council said we had 72 hours to show why. We did and council approved it.” The progress association battled hard for the new

In the same year, half a hectare of land was provided by council for a park. A demountable building became a community hall, a cricket pitch was laid and tennis court opened in 1990. The community hall was used as a polling booth for the first time in 1990 – a role it will take on again later this month for the 2020 State Elections.

railway line, to stop Halpine Lake (pictured) being drained, fought to save iconic mango trees on the same road and turned its annual Christmas Carols into a regional event. It is presently campaigning for a second exit road on to Anzac Ave to reduce queuing at the Capestone Bld roundabout, lobbying to improve 24 traffic issues, and is supporting a new fire station in North Lakes. It is supported by Councillor Jodie Shipway (Div

4), who moved to Mango Hill from Redcliffe five years ago. “I want to see development that nurtures the village feel of Capestone and Mango Hill by supporting boutique retail developments with cafes and grocery stores here, so eventually locals can ‘walk to the local’ and don’t need to go into North Lakes as often,” she said. “There really isn’t anywhere else I’d want my kids growing up.”

A report in the early 1990s said town water and sewerage were unlikely to come to Mango Hill until pine forest land was developed. “It is not something that bothers residents” said the report. In March 2006, the northern part of Mango Hill was subdivided by the Queensland Department of Natural resources, Mines and Water to form a new suburb – North Lakes.

Flu numbers break record STORY JODIE POWELL

REDCLIFFE Hospital has celebrated a record flu season, with no local patients admitted with a laboratory-confirmed diagnosis of influenza since March. In 2019, 526 people with the flu were admitted to the Metro North Region’s five hospitals, including Redcliffe, Caboolture and the Royal Brisbane and Women’s hospitals.

Redcliffe Infectious Diseases and Respiratory Physician Dr Christopher Chew said the last case of laboratory confirmed flu at Redcliffe was recorded in March. Dr Chew said the rate of flu testing had not diminished, despite the onset of COVID-19. “We did 4000 tests last year and by the start of October we had done about 3000 and we’re finding this

is the case across other jurisdictions,” Dr Chew said. With influenza spread mainly through direct contact with infected respiratory droplets, Dr Chew said it was easily contracted by touching contaminated surfaces and then touching your face. “Droplets can go up to 1.5m, which is why we say stand 1.5m away from everyone else,” he said. The declaration of a pub-

lic health emergency at the end of January, the introduction of physical distancing and restrictions on the number of people in public places had combined to limit cases. Other contributing factors included distance learning and working from home. “The main driver is children, so parents not going to work and kids not mixing, (as well as) a huge emphasis on things like

hand hygiene and cough et- “(Continuing to focus on) iquette removed the whole hygiene and public health contaminated hands influmeasures is important,” he ence,” he said. said. PHOTO DOMINIKA LIS | Able Angler Chrissie celebrates her catch at Clontarf.

STEVE Hayes spends his days making people smile. His Peninsula-based business, Able Anglers, brings together people living with a mental illness or disability for fishing sessions on land and on the water. Mr Hayes launched the business about four years ago after his own struggles with depression. “I went through it myself and the only thing that helped me was sitting by the waIter and fishing,” he said. Mr Hayes reasoned that if fishing could have such a

profound impact on his mental health, perhaps it could help others too, and the idea for Able Anglers was born. “Generally the fishing community is a good community and when we’re fishing from jetties other people get chatting with us – it’s great for everyone. “It’s amazing – at the end of every day you know what they have accomplished within themselves. “The big thing is social isolation, there is still a lot of stigma, but our people know everybody is different and we all have our own problems. “For them it’s just a

bunch of mates fishing and that’s what it’s all about.” With the motto `Reel opportunities for real people’, Mr Hayes and his team adapt their approach to each client, with some starting with solo sessions before joining a larger group. “We don’t focus on the disability, it’s about the social side, they make really good friendships.” Mr Hayes said he and his team drew immense satisfaction from the accomplishments of their fishers. “We had one guy the other day with ADHD and his mum couldn’t believe he’d

been completely absorbed by fishing for three hours. “We had another client with spina bifida and she really wanted to go jet skiing, so we organised that and now she goes every Monday.” Mr Hayes said National Disability Insurance Scheme had opened up opportunities for people to explore more activities with support workers. “It’s good now with the NDIS – people are looking outside the box.”

Positivity takes flight STORY JODIE POWELL

PHOTO DOMINIKA LIS | Cailyn De Vries is lighting up the internet.

WHEN the coronavirus pandemic reached its height, Cailyn De Vries was determined to find a positive from the challenging situation. The 12-year-old from North Lakes turned to her pets for inspiration, creating an Instagram account with the help of mum Toni-Lee. “During our lockdown period, I noticed a lot of people were feeling really down, especially my friends and fellow students,” Cailyn said. “I wanted to do something with a positive vibe that would maybe bring a bit of cheer to everyone and so I started a project with my pets.” The result was a series of miniature settings in which she photographed her cockatiels, Stormy and Marshmallow, as well as images of her dog, cats and chickens.

“I just put Stormy and Marshmallow in the scenes and they do whatever they like,” she said. The North Pine Christian College student posts her photographs to Instagram

I wanted to do something with a positive vibe with an inspirational quote. “Mum supervises my account because some people post a lot of weird stuff,” Cailyn said. When Stormy and Marshmallow are not posing for the camera, they hang out in large indoor and outdoor enclosures filled with native flowers, leaves, and sticks. “They love native flowers,” Cailyn said. “They also love to forage for their food.”

A passionate nature lover, Cailyn said she had more than 50 pets when she and her family lived in South Africa. “We had cats, birds, dogs, snakes, spiders, Madagascan hissing cockroaches, bunnies, bullfrogs. “My dream was to move to Australia – I wanted to meet (Bondi Vet) Chris Brown. “I met him when I was at a god expo and I was too shy to talk to him,” she laughed.

Runners rejoice at J2J’s return ABOUT 3,200 runners took part in the Jetty 2 Jetty Fun Run on October 4, relieved to be pounding the pavement once again, in one of the first running events post COVID-19 lockdowns. The enthusiasm was evident a week out from the run, with the Moreton Daily Half Marathon and the Sizzler 10km selling out, albeit it in their reduced capacity to comply with the run COVID Safe Event Plan, approved by Queensland Health in August. It was an earlier start than normal, to accommodate for the wave starts in each race, but the weather was perfect as runners made their way from Pelican Park along the shores of the Redcliffe Peninsula. Moreton Bay Region Industry & Tourism (MBRIT) CEO Shane Newcombe said the race nearly broke its 34-year streak this year but he was glad it could go ahead in the ‘new normal.’ “It was a huge relief to

Despite the reduced capacity, competition was fierce in the Moreton Daily Half Marathon with the first male competitor, Tim Vincent crossing the finish line in a time of 01:04:16 and the first female competitor, Katinka Von Elsner-Wellstead crossing the line in 1:16:38. This year’s J2J supported Chameleon Youth Housing, with a portion of each registration fee donated directly to the charity. A total of $8,580 was raised.

MORETON police district is looking for more volunteers to join its ranks, but not in the capacity many might expect. It is looking for VIPs – Volunteers in Policing – to support the work officers do and work with the community to reduce crime. They assist with the processing of domestic violence cases at Redcliffe Court House on Tuesdays, attend community events, share crime prevention tips with residents, visit aged care facilities, and raise awareness of road safety, compliance and much more. It is a role Ruth Kean and Bruce Wonders have enjoyed for about two years. For Bruce, it gave him something to sink this teeth into and the chance to meet new people after retiring and moving to the Redcliffe peninsula.

He was sold on becoming a VIP after chatting with Sergeant Sarah Grayson at a Crime Stoppers meeting. It’s a perfect fit for the former New South Wales police officer, whose son is still in the service in Sydney.

I enjoy the camaraderie “As a retired person in a new area, it was a good way to associate with likeminded people because of my background and the camaraderie that comes with working with a team,” Mr Wonders said. “I enjoy the camaraderie. If anyone joins thinking they’re going to be involved in policing, they’re not. It’s totally different to that.” Ms Kean, a former theatre nurse who also has a background in administration and management, joined after attending a Coffee with

a Cop event, where she met Sgt Grayson and senior police liaison Raro Tevita. “I enjoy just getting to do different things and meet new people all the time,” she said. “It’s varied, there’s lots of things to do and get involved in.” Sergeant Sarah Grayson said the Queensland Police Service was always looking for more VIPs. “All the VIPs bring different skills and want to do different things,” Sgt Grayson said. “Some like events and others like to help out in the office. We find duties that suit their skills.” VIPs also help police in working with other emergency service agencies. Anyone interested in becoming a VIP, should visit their nearest police station and ask for more information.

Can-do attitude shines through

Boost job chances at expo STORY JODIE POWELL

STORY JODIE POWELL LIFE has been anything but easy for Isabella Stanfield, but the courageous Margate youngster is proving she ‘cane do anything’ she puts her mind to. Isabella, in Year 7 at North Lakes State College, lives with cerebral palsy and vision loss caused by bleeding on the brain in utero. Ahead of International White Cane Day on October 15, she has joined Guide Dogs Queensland’s campaign to share the life-changing transformation a white cane can offer. “I not only have my vision to deal with, but also cerebral palsy, so most of the time I use a walking frame to get around,” Isabella explained. “I feel good using the cane and not needing the walker, I feel like I belong.”

PHOTO DOMINIKA LIS | Life has opened up for Isabella Stanfield, since she started using a cane.

Isabella started using a cane when she was three after her dad, Mal, found a wooden cane in a local op shop. “I thought it could help her identify things around her and make her a bit more confident and comfortable when walking around,” Mr Stanfield said. Then came her first cane – a rainbow one – from Guide

Dogs Queensland. Isabella quickly outgrew the first one and is now starting to use her cane more to get between classes at school. “I know my mobility is limited, but my cane gives me the security to try anything and be more comfortable in my surroundings. I just say to myself ‘I’ve got

this, I can do it’.” Isabella’s “cane do” attitude has been with her from a young age. Mr Stanfield recalled her crawling backwards to familiarise herself with new environments. Guide Dogs Queensland Chief Executive Officer Michael Kightley said it was inspiring how life-chang-

ing a white cane could be for children. “With a white cane, a child with low vision or blindness can find this freedom too,” he said. “This White Cane Day we are celebrating the fun, fearless and adventurous spirit of our young clients and cane users who live life to the fullest.”

which were announced this week. His electorate of Petrie covers the Redcliffe peninsula, Deception Bay, Mango Hill, North Lakes and Griffin. “Anyone who earns $45,000 will get $1080 this year back in the hand, and it is backdated to July 1, 2020,” he said. “The Federal Government will also raise the 19 cents tax bracket from $37,000 to $45,000 and the 37

cents tax bracket will rise from $90,000 to $120,000. “This means more money in the pockets of local households to assist with the cost of living, but also to help generate economic activity and create jobs.” Mr Howarth said first home buyers and the construction industry would also benefit under initiatives outlined in the Budget. “We are also further assisting first home buy-

ers and the construction sector by extending the First Home Loan Deposit Scheme to another 10,000 places and providing an additional $1 billion of lowcost finance to support the construction of affordable housing.” Mr Howarth said businesses were also beneficiaries under the Budget, with incentives for them to invest in their businesses to create more economic activity and jobs.

“Tax relief for Petrie businesses includes allowing 99 per cent of businesses to deduct the full cost of depreciable assets in the year they are installed, and allowing companies with a turnover of up to $5 billion to offset losses against previous profits on which tax has been paid to generate a refund. “We will also simplify access to credit for households and small businesses, to support the economic recovery,” he said.

Families, business boost from Federal Budget STORY JODIE POWELL HELPING people get back to work and businesses to rebuild, grow, and create jobs are the key benefits of the Federal Budget for the Petrie electorate, according to Federal Member for Petrie Luke Howarth. Mr Howarth said funding for programs and projects was important, but the vast majority of people would benefit most from the government’s tax changes,

JOBSEEKERS will be able to connect directly with employers and learn from experts at the Moreton Bay Business and Jobs Expo. Employers, agencies and industry professionals will be gathered in one place for jobseekers to help them secure their next role. Moreton Bay Region Industry & Tourism (MBRIT) CEO Shane Newcombe CEO encouraged those in the job market to take advantage of the free event at The Hope Centre, Rothwell, on October 29. “The Moreton Bay Jobs Expo is focussed solely on connecting jobseekers with potential employers” he said. “This is the perfect chance to speak face to face with employers and see the opportunities out there.” Jobseekers will also be able to take part in workshops and presentations providing expert advice on topics including developing employability skills, career transition and improving job interview skills. Moreton Bay Jobs Expo is part of the Moreton Bay Region Business Expo, which will feature more than 140 exhibitors from local businesses and organisations. Mr Newcombe said this year’s expo came at the perfect time for the region’s businesses. He said it had been a challenging time for many and the positive response to events like this showed networking opportunities were valued. Although the expo is free to attend, event organisers have urged people to register online. A shuttle bus will provide free transport from Rothwell station to the event from 9am to 4.30pm.

Upgrade to begin at Redcliffe SES depot WORK to refurbish the Redcliffe State Emergency Service depot is expected to start this month. Moreton Bay Regional Council will spend about $200,000 upgrading the Portwood St facility. Mayor Peter Flannery said the refurbishment would deliver a better space for operational and response training for staff and volunteers. “From floods and fires to a global pandemic, our local SES team are always there when we need them most, which is why it’s important we give back to those who tirelessly give their time,” he said. “Especially after the year they’ve helped us with, from their daily border control support at the Brisbane Airport, to helping police search for missing persons.” The upgrade will include improved accessibility, new bathroom fixtures and airconditioning. The tender for the works was awarded to Future Fitouts Qld, ahead of 20 other companies. Mayor Flannery said the work would take about six weeks. “Part of Council’s Building Renewal Program, this upgrade to the Redcliffe SES facility will better support vital high-quality training for staff and volunteers,” he said. “We’ll be reconfiguring the internal spaces to improve functionality, installing airconditioning in time for summer, constructing a new bathroom (and) giving the whole building a paint job.” The SES will operate as normal during the construction.

Kids Fest a load of laughs EVENT DETAILS What: Moreton Kids Festival will offer five worlds of fun, free rides, stage shows, workshops and much more. Where: Pine Rivers Park When: October 18, 9am-4pm For more information and ticketing details visit moretonkidsfestival.com.au

Comedy Circus Stunt Show performer Joel Fenton is counting down the sleeps until Moreton Kids Festival.

STORY JODIE POWELL THE stage is set for a day jam-packed with family fun for this year’s Moreton Kids Festival. Back for its fourth year, and with a Queensland Health-approved COVID Safety Plan in place, the festival promises loads of activities, workshops and entertainment on October 18 at Pine Rivers Park. Moreton Bay Region Industry and Tourism CEO Shane Newcombe said he could not wait to see smiling faces enjoying the festival fun in a year that hasn’t been much fun for kids. Stunt performer Joel Fenton said he was counting the sleeps until his Comedy Circus Stunt show was on the Strathpine Centre Main Stage at the festival. Having performed locally and internationally for more than 20 years, Fenton said being forced off-stage due to COVID-19 restrictions had been a challenge. “I’ve done one or two smaller shows in the past month, but this will be my first big event since January,” he said. Fenton said he had spent the time away from the stage productively, refining some additions to his act. “I take a lot of inspiration from Vaudeville and one of the new things I’ll be doing is balancing a golf club on

top of a golf ball on top of a gold club on top of a golf ball on my face,” he said. Fenton’s act includes juggling running chainsaws and climbing inside a giant balloon. Also taking to the main stage will be Peppa and George Pig, who will perform two live shows. Mayor Peter Flannery said Moreton Kids Festival was always one of the biggest events on the local calendar, but this year it took on a whole new importance. “This year’s event is bursting back onto the events scene bigger and better than ever, with fun and entertainment everywhere you look in Pine Rivers Park,” Mayor Flannery said. In the light of COVID restrictions, event goers are being encouraged to pre-purchase tickets online, where they can pre-fill their details for contact tracing. Tickets will also be available at the gate on the day. TICKETS ONLINE: $10 (+BF) adults, $5 (+BF) child/concession, $25 (+BF) family pass (2x adults & 2x children) TICKETS AT THE GATE: $12 adults, $7 child/concession, $30 family pass (2 adults & 2 children)

Stadium in the spotlight STORY KYLIE KNIGHT THE Dolphins’ bid for a lighting upgrade has moved a step closer, with both major parties offering funding for the project ahead of the State Election on October 31. Labor candidate for Redcliffe and sitting Member Yvette D’Ath last week pledged $2 million to upgrade the lights, and LNP candidate for Redcliffe Kerri-Anne Dooley has committed $500,000. It follows calls from the Dolphins in August for

four new 45m international broadcast-standard light poles at an estimated cost of $2.7 million. Dolphins CEO Tony Murphy said the upgrade would enable the Dolphin Stadium to host televised night games – hopefully for the Vodafone Warriors NRL side, the Brisbane Roar and others. He said the required upgrade would boost the current lighting to a level needed by television broadcasters. Mr Murphy said if the club received $2 million in fund-

ing from the State Government, building could happen in February or March 2021. If there was a change in government and it received $500,000, it would seek funding from other partners. “We appreciate anyone giving us anything. This upgrade will benefit the community. It’s not for the footy club – we’ll run it and maintain it – but we intend to bring as many events as we can to the peninsula,” Mr Murphy said. He said the lights would light up the field, not sur-

rounding properties, and would enable the facility to attract more sporting events including rugby union, soccer, touch football and more. It was hoped the upgrade, and new women’s changeroom facilities would also make the venue appealing to women’s soccer, rugby league and union. Mrs D’Ath said the fully-funded election pledge was a massive win for sports and major events in the region, including on the peninsula. “This builds on

$750,000 already promised for the Redcliffe Leagues Softball Association and the Peninsula Cricket Club for lighting,” she said. LNP candidate for Redcliffe Kerri-Anne Dooley has pledged funding following a visit to the site by deputy opposition leader Tim Mander in September. “The LNP’s commitments is $500,000 in partnership with the Federal Morrison Government who have given $7 million towards building Dolphin Stadium,” Ms Dooley said.

STORY NICK CROCKFORD MORETON Bay Region may become the writers’ capital of Queensland following the launch of a major new festival. The first Fellowship of Australian Writers Queensland (FAWQ) Readers and Writers Festival is coming here from June 18 to July 1 next year. Mayor Peter Flannery said attracting the twoweek celebration of the written word was a massive coup. “This region has long held a special place in the hearts of historians, writers and artists, so I hope the event will become a major annual attraction on our calen-

dar,” Mayor Flannery said. “It’s fitting that FAWQ is writing this new chapter in Redcliffe, which has historically been one of the strongest sub-branches in Queensland since 1960. “It will be a massive economic boon for the region too. We’re expecting visitors from outside the region as well locals to come to events at Moreton Bay Region Libraries and the University of the Sunshine Coast Moreton Bay Campus during those two weeks.” FAWQ president and Redcliffe branch member Jim Higgins said 2021 would be a milestone for the group and he’s pleased to share it with the public.

“This is a monumental occasion for FAWQ, as our roots stem back to 1921, making next year’s festival a centenary celebration,” Mr Higgins said. “This will be a great opportunity for us to showcase the brilliant talent we have in Moreton Bay, but also see the best and brightest from across the state. We haven’t had an event like this in our 100-year history, so we are especially thankful to Moreton Bay Regional Council and its library staff for sharing our passion.” The festival program will be delivered closer to the date, but will aim to bring together writers, aspiring writers and readers.

Rock legends join Mighty effort STORY KYLIE KNIGHT AUSSIE rock legends Hoodoo Gurus did not hesitate, when Rockin 4 the Homeless put a call out for tracks for its album, which will replace this year’s live shows. Since their debut as Le Hoodoo Gurus at the start of the 1980s, the band have produced a back catalogue spanning more than 35 years, with Australian rock classics including What’s My Scene, Miss Freelove ’69 and Come Anytime. They’ve unearthed a previously unreleased single, Mighty Clean, for the album which will be called Rockin 4 the Homeless 2020: Greatest Hitters 2013-2020. It was recorded when drummer Mark Kingsmill was with the band. He joined in 1984 and left about three years ago. “It was the last track with him playing on drums that no-one had heard. He retired and had his fill of rock’n’roll and touring,” Faulkner explained. “I couldn’t think of a bet-

ter place for it. It’s a song that needs to be heard.” The Hoodoo Gurus frontman said when recording an album, bands often recorded too many songs or changed their minds about which worked best together. Some slipped through the cracks and were rediscovered later to become hits. He is hoping it is the case for Mighty Clean.

It's kind of rockin “It’s about someone who has had a tough day at work, is hard done-by … the boss driving them hard. They’re letting steam off, on the weekend, looking for excitement,” Faulkner said. Given the restrictions everyone has faced in the past six months, Faulker said most were keen to let off some steam. Mighty Clean gives them the chance to do just that. “It’s kind of rockin,” he said.

“Let’s get out and raise hell, in a good way. We’ve got to let off steam built up at this time. We need somewhere to release it. “I think fans will like this song and they will like what this song is for. It’s a win-win. “We haven’t played since January, so it’s been a long time between drinks for us. We’re making plans to do something in the near future.” And Faulkner is keen to talk to Rockin’ 4 the Homeless director Dan Nebe about performing at a future charity gig. “Guitarist Brad (Shepherd) and I performed for Rockin 4 the Homeless in 2018. It was great. They raised a lot of money and it was great to see the money go into the right hands and not be spent on expenses,” he said. “We were very impressed by what The Breakfast Club is all about and what Dan’s doing there. It’s giving disadvantaged people a place and support and nourishment.”

Australian rock legends the Hoodoo Gurus have donated a previously-unreleased track for the album.

Faulkner said the social connection it offered was equally important. “This world is getting colder and more hostile for the less fortunate and groups like The Breakfast Club are reversing that … we need more of that, not less,” he said. Rockin 4 the Homeless 2020: Greatest Hitters 2013-

2020 will be available in December and features 30 tracks from headline acts as well as local artists who have supported the event from the beginning. These include The Superjesus, Salt & Steel, Team Utopia, Killtoys, The Gastons, Union Radio, Diana Anaid and many more. Rockin 4 the Homeless

director Dan Nebe said: “I can’t think of a better way to replace the live show than release an album from past artists”.

Campaign off to flying start

Political expert Dr Paul Williams.

STORY KYLIE KNIGHT VOTERS can expect more from the State Election campaign early, as record numbers prepare to prepoll or lodge a postal vote. It is a change in behaviour that hit 35 per cent during the 2017 State Election and is expected to exceed 50 per cent this time around, according to Griffth University Senior Lecturer School of Humanities, Languages and Social Science Dr Paul Williams. Dr Williams said people preferred the convenience of voting when it suited them, rather than waiting

for polling day and lining up at a booth. “We would have seen 40 per cent this election, with or without COVID. The Electoral Commission of Queensland is predicting over 50 per cent of people will opt for prepoll or postal votes,” he said. “We don’t talk of polling day anymore, instead it’s an election period. “The fact that we have so many people prepolling, will flow onto campaign strategies. “We saw a hint of this in 2017, when the LNP’s Tim Nichols made major policy

announcements almost im- “As soon as prepoll opens, mediately after Parliament there’s going to be a stack of committed voters voting was dissolved.” … those that follow politics closely,” he said. activity on social media and on television. When asked who he thought would win the election, Dr Williams was quick to answer. “It’s easier to split the atom than predict this election. There’s so many moving parts in this election,” he said. He believed one of three scenarios was likely – a Labor majority government, a Labor minority government or an LNP minority government. It all rested on seats with a margin of 0-6 per cent. Dr Williams said there

would be a group of voters grateful for the government’s handling of borders and COVID-19, and another angry about the impact it has had on their businesses and lives. The outcome of the election would be decided by the larger group. “It will be a polarised campaign, with not a lot of votes up for grabs. Most people know who they’re going to vote for,” he said. “We can expect a result on election night, but we might not get one. The ECQ does a wonderful job, but it’s a washing machine of preferences.”

Pumped for bodybuilding debut PHOTO DOMINIKA LIS | Mickey Clarke has new confidence thanks to bodybuilding.

STORY NICK CROCKFORD FOUR years ago, Mickey Clarke hated physical activity … any physical activity. He was even told running and sport were out of the question without surgery. But how that has changed. Now the 19-year-old from Clontarf loves working out in a gym, wants to be a fitness model, ambassador, physical trainer - and is about to start a new sporting career. Mickey plans to make his competitive bodybuilding debut in the ICN Brisbane Classic at

Showground carpark in limbo THE future of a temporary carpark at the Redcliffe Showgrounds remains unclear, with the show society adamant it should be replaced by grass and Moreton Bay Regional Council

Sleeman Sports Complex, Chandler, on October 24-25. It has been a long, remarkable and rewarding journey for the former Redcliffe Special School vice-captain who has autism, seizures and growth issues through Global Developmental Delay and Generalised Hypotonia. Mum Natalie said her son also had trouble coping when angry until she spoke with Jonathan “Jono” Bannister, the owner of Off Tap Fitness. “I decided to try some private physical training with Jono. Mickey wasn’t given a choice (in

this),” Ms Clarke said. The sessions started at Anytime Fitness Clontarf, where Jono was based. At that time, Mickey did not talk with anyone but that has changed. Now, he loves all things fitness, wants to be an ambassador for autism and has a special bond with his ‘Fitfam’ at the gym, where he shouts ‘Yeah Boy!’ when completing a big lift. Ms Clarke said her son was inspired by Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson and ‘idolises’ Jono. In fact, after three powerlifting events, Mickey decided to follow

his mentor into the sport. “Mickey loves to make people proud of him, so will give anything a go and succeed,” Natalie said. Jono, who now runs a Transformational and Personal Training Service at Anytime Fitness Lawnton, said his “little brother” just needed to understand he was as “able as everyone else, but sometimes needed longer to learn”. A broken arm forced Mickey out of his first bodybuilding competition and COVID-19 forced the cancellation of his planned second event.

“He still has a long way to go and is still in other therapies, but the difference a supportive community gym has made, proves it takes a village to raise a child,” Ms Clarke said. The ‘village’ includes the Starkey Motor Group Redcliffe which offered Mickey a volunteer role helping clean cars and in the service centre at a time when he had severe depression. Mickey also volunteers at Anytime Fitness Clontarf, where he completed a school-based traineeship and Certificate 2 in Sport and Recreation.

keen to see it stay. Redcliffe Show Society president Brad McGowan confirmed the executive committee had voted to ask Queensland Health, which built the temporary car park, to convert the land to grass. Mr McGowan said while the land was owned by Council, the carpark agreement was between the show society and Metro North Health.

“It doesn’t have anything to do with them (Council),” Mr McGowan said. “It was a contract between us and Metro North. Everything has now been finalised – we sought solicitor’s advice and the meetings have been held – it’s done and dusted as far as we’re concerned.” But Mayor Peter Flannery told the October 7 council meeting he had written to the show society asking

for a meeting to discuss the future of the 250-space carpark and was disappointed a second meeting of the society’s executive had again voted to have it grassed without meeting him. He said Queensland Health had agreed not to take any action until it heard from Council. Mr McGowan said the society was advised it could not run the carpark

commercially and it had turned away events that could not use the site in its current form. Mayor Flannery, in a letter to the Show Society, said under the terms of the Show Society’s Trustee Lease, the council, would be responsible for future maintenance and the State Government had offered to pay the society $20,000 if the carpark was retained.

MANGO Hill tennis and basketball courts at Danzy Buchanan Park, Chermside Rd, have been officially reopened after major upgrades. The courts were resurfaced and LED lighting installed in a joint project by Moreton Bay Regional Council and the Mango Hill Progress Association. Deputy Mayor Denise

Sims and Councillor Jodie Shipway (Div 4) were on hand earlier this month to check out the new-look facilities. There was also a demonstration of tennis coaching by the Kubler family, with Wade Foster of InTennis and impromptu games on the basketball court. Jason Kubler grew up

playing on the Mango Hill court before going on to become the world’s topranked junior and play at all four tennis grand slam tournaments. Jason’s mum Lyn is still the tennis court coordinator. Bookings are required for the court. Visit mangohillprogress.org/ community-centre/ for details.

STORY KYLIE KNIGHT IT IS the newest cultural and tourism destination in the Moreton Bay Region, yet the new $5.5 million Redcliffe Art Gallery opened on October 9 without any fanfare. Instead, pre-booked guests were taken on private guided tours through the latest exhibitions and Mayor Peter Flannery said, surprisingly, it was the perfect start. “This is a truly historic day for Moreton Bay Region at a truly unusual time in history,” he said. “There’s been a lot of downsides to social distancing, but getting to enjoy an immersive arts experience in a brand new facility without crowds might be the one good thing to come from COVID-19. “The refurbished building itself is to behold, currently showcasing the remarkable work of First Nations artists and a career survey of Deception Bay artist Marc Clark, 96. “We are proud to recognise the incredible achievements of this humble, yet supremely talented, man in this exhibition of his lifetime’s work, appropriately titled A Life in Art.

“With a focus on people and place, First examines ideas surrounding sovereignty and connections to place through the stories of artists living in or from Queensland and the Torres Strait. “This building is an investment in growing our region’s $1 billion tourism industry by tapping into a new visitor market whilst encouraging longer visitation with more on offer.” Councillor Karl Winchester (Div 6) said the new gallery expanded the peninsula’s tourism offerings. “This new, sophisticated space will catapult the region’s cultural, arts and tourism offerings to a new level,” Cr Winchester said. “This state-of-the-art gallery will exhibit high quality local and touring exhibitions.” Councillor Sandra Ruck (Div 5) encouraged everyone to check out the new cultural destination. “The team has worked incredible hard to open this amazing gallery and welcome locals and visitors alike to the peninsula,” she said. The gallery is at 1 Irene St, Redcliffe. To find out more, visit moretonbay.qld.gov.au/GalleriesMuseums/Locations/RedcliffeGallery

PHOTOS DOMINIKA LIS | Christine Stuart shares her culture with children at a local childcare centre.

Workshops share culture STORY NICK CROCKFORD CHRISTINE Stuart is passionate about ensuring the Gubbi Gubbi past has a place in the future of the Moreton Bay Region. As secretary of the

non-profit Aboriginal organisation Gubbi Gubbi Dyungungoo Group, Christine has spent a decade going to schools and childcare centres teaching about the history of this area.

FOR MORE VISIT the Gubbi Gubbi Dyungungoo website: gubbigubbidyungungoo. com or Facebook page: facebook.com/ gubbigubbidyungungoo The Gubbi Gubbi people are the Traditional Custodians of the land from the north banks of the North Pine River at Petrie, Kallangur, Murrumba Downs and

Griffin, up through Caboolture and the Sunshine Coast to the Burrum River near Maryborough. Christine’s workshops are modelled for each age group. The early childhood sessions use activities including songs, dance, art and storytelling. For primary and high school students, the Gubbi Gubbi history, culture and language is taught through activities using pictures, storytelling and art. “As a Traditional Own-

er I feel it is important to continue ensuring that the Gubbi Gubbi history, culture and language is shared throughout our region and our language is pronounced and understood correctly,” she said. “This relates to our cultural, history and heritage and the true meaning of being on Country.” Christine has written two Gubbi Gubbi language storybooks Gubbi Gubbi Animal Friends and Gubbi Gubbi Bush Tucker Girl.

WE have an election coming up. Sometimes politics gets quite heated! Yet consider this; both political parties in Australia were formed by people representing different Christian traditions. The Labor party was formed by people of faith concerned with caring for others. Emphasising social responsibility. The Liberal party was formed by people of faith concerned with personal contribution. Emphasising individual responsibility. What can seem like polarised debates are people arguing which ideal is better in building a prosperous nation; Virtue or Charity! We need both, so the debate is very healthy. If we remember this reality, hopefully our politics can be healthier too. Paul Clark has been the Pastor of Redcliffe Uniting Church for almost a decade. He is the author of more than 20 books.

School Students lead way in STEM STORY KYLIE KNIGHT

Georgia Cullen and Niamh Prunty are representing their school in STEM.

FOUR female Southern Cross Catholic College students have been selected to attend two prestigious events, which will give them the edge as they work towards careers in STEM and science. Niamh Prunty and Georgia Cullen attended the 2020 QUT STEM camp at the Gardens Point Campus during the school holidays. The camp gave highachieving Year 11 science students the chance to attend an interactive week-long engaging activity to solve some of the major challenges facing society and the planet. Niamh worked with

world-leading QUT researchers using an Artificial Intelligence (AI) system that mobilises drones and infrared imaging to count koala populations. The system will be used to automate the detection of koalas and contribute to koala conservation, critically important after the recent devastating bushfires in Australia. Georgia worked with a group of ingenious young scientists modelling the Mars 2020 mission from launch in July 2020 through to collecting samples to test for signs of life using Rover’s robotic arm. A transdisciplinary approach was used, combining physics, chemistry, rocket science

and aerospace, robotics and Python programming, geology and material science, to embark on interdisciplinary ‘travel’ and to test for macroscopic biosignatures of past life. Before attending, Georgia said: “I expect the camp to provide clarity towards my future endeavours in the STEM fields”. Niamh was “looking forward to collaborative work with accomplished scientists and likeminded students who share my passion in STEM fields”. Fellow Year 11 science student Charlotte Grant has gone through a rigorous selection process to secure a place in a 10day residential camp of the 2021 National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) at

the Australian National University in Canberra. With the support of the Redcliffe Rotary Club, Charlotte will visit science and technology-related facilities, go on site tours, listen to lectures, take part in workshops, go to events and take part in group activities to improve presentation skills. “The camp will provide me a great opportunity to follow my passion in science and to connect with like-minded peers in an enabling environment,” Charlotte said. Year 12 student Ella Babarovich was selected to attend the 2020 NYSF, but was unable to attend due to the fires at the start of the year. She will join Charlotte at the 2021 camp.

Science fan a regional champion STORY JODIE POWELL A VIDEO about time travel earnt Rothwell’s Noah Wildman a place as a regional champion for Australia and New Zealand in the internationally renowned Breakthrough Junior Challenge. The challenge is a global competition in which participants aged 13-18 explain a big scientific idea in the fields of physics, life sciences, mathematics and COVID-19 in a video of three minutes or less. This year’s competition attracted more than 5600 entries. Noah said he was fascinated by the notion of time travel and believed one of the most likely ways

to achieve it was through Wormholes. “I would like to focus on that, even if there’s just a possibility (it could happen),” Noah said. His entry into the Breakthrough Junior Challenge, Wormholes. Tears in Spacetime, was

named Regional Champion in the Popular Vote category of the competition. Noah said while the video was only about two and a half minutes long, it took a month to create. “I focused on the script for two weeks and then spent about two weeks on

filming and animation,” he said. He created all the graphics for the video with some advice from a friend – no mean feat given he had little experience previously. He said being named regional champion in the Popular Vote category came as quite a shock. “I’d done competitions before, but nothing like this – I hadn’t done any animations. It was definitely a challenge,” Noah said. The Year 12 student at Grace Lutheran College said he loved all things science and hoped to study a Bachelor of Science at Noah Wildman’s fascination with time travel has made him a regional champion. Fundraising a way of life for Aerin STORY JODIE POWELL AERIN Schafferius is helping the world, one fundraiser at a time. The Mango Hill State Secondary College Year 8 student was named the Job’s Daughter’s Miss Charity Queensland for 2019-20 after raising the most money during a set timeframe. In her role, she has been raising money for the National Breast Cancer Foundation and the Allison Baden-Clay Foundation. Aerin is hosting a Pink Ribbon lunch on October 18, for the National Breast Cancer Foundation, a charity close to her heart.

“My grandmother is a survivor, and my aunty is recovering from breast cancer,” she said. “The money raised from the lunch will help research, which is the best way to prevent breast cancer.” Aerin was grateful for support from the community, with Woolworths at Dakabin, Bunnings, and Kmart and Priceline at North Lakes all donating vouchers to a raffle that is being run online and will be drawn at the lunch. To donate prizes, phone Jane-Elizabeth Harris on 0412 832 484. Buy raffle tickets at fundraise.nbcf. org.au/fundraiser/jdiqld. To book tickets for the lunch, visit trybooking. com/BLXAN.

Mentoring role goes full-circle STORY KYLIE KNIGHT

BILLY Energetic Billy is one of Peninsula Animal Aid’s larger mixed breeds, with a touch of Border Collie tucked in. He knows only too well how to scale high fences. Billy is quite protective, but displays playful moments. While he prefers to be the only dog to share with humans, he might adapt to a second furry friend. If you’d like to offer Billy a fur-ever home, phone PAA on 3284 1927 and speak to a supervisor to arrange a meeting. All PAA dogs are vet-checked, desexed, microchipped, vaccinated and heartworm tested and treated with heartworm preventative and for intestinal worms.

SARA Gault joined Business and Professional Women North Lakes to develop her skills and now enjoys doing the same for young women finding their way in business. Just four years after joining the group, she has now taken the reins as its president. “(When I first joined) I thought this is a group that will mentor me and I can network with, and still help women and girls which is a passion of mine,” she explained. Ms Gault is a mortgage broker, who has been working independently for about 17 years. She worked for National Australia Bank for 21 years before that. Ms Gault started off as a typist, performing secretarial tasks for about 10 years, before a change in pay structure prompted her to seek out a more chal-

BPW mentors can also be a sounding board to help members realise the path they want to take in life.

Scuba team’s making a splash STORY JODIE POWELL THE birth of their first child was the inspiration behind Melanie Meatheringham and Dave Griffiths starting their own Clontarf-based business. Aquaventures began as a diving school aimed specifically at teaching children to dive, but has since expanded to teaching families and adults.

it's quiet, peaceful and relaxing

Explore the big deep blue with Aquaventures, based at Clontarf.

The idea for the business was driven by a desire to return to doing what they loved. Having arrived in Australia from England via Cyprus and Egypt – where they honed their diving skills – they had intended to go backpacking, but ended up working in Syd-

ney and moving into other careers. “In 2014 we had our first child and we realised we were not doing what we were passionate about,” Mr Griffiths said. “A lot of dive centres didn’t really focus much on kids, so we started specialising in kids’ diving, but we have now grown into families and adults.” Pool-based training takes place at the Dolphins aquatic centre, while ocean dives have been confined to the Gold Coast seaway or boat trips off the Sunshine Coast thanks to COVID-19 restrictions banning access to their usual site at Tweed Heads. Mr Griffith said he and Ms Meatheringham relished the opportunity to share their passion for diving with children. “We’re inspiring the next generation of divers,” he said. “The main thing is to be able to see the beauti-

ful ocean and explore the marine life. It’s just being under water with nature, it’s quiet, peaceful and relaxing.” An accomplished underwater photographer, Mr Griffiths also runs Scubapic with Ms Meatheringham, capturing the wonder of children learning to swim.

WHAT’S ON A life in art Acclaimed artist Marc Clark’s ‘A life in art’ exhibition is the first to be held at the new Redcliffe Art Gallery. Clark has lived in different countries, served in World War II, and taught at numerous art institutions. His experimentation with colour and form stretches from his student days at the Royal College of Art in London, to his retirement in Deception Bay. shines through STORY JODY POWELL STUNNING hand-built and wheel-thrown creations are on display at the Redcliffe Entertainment Centre as part of the Redcliffe Pottery Group’s sixth Clay on Display exhibition. Vice-president Cristina Austin said this year’s exhibition included an `Isolation Creation’ category, capturing the creativity of members during the COVID-19 pandemic. Ms Austin said there had been a resurgence in interest in pottery, partly driven by the rising popularity of keep-cups. “It’s very trendy at the moment – you go to cafes and drink out of rustic cups and eat off rustic plates,” she said. “Hand built and handmade are very popular. It’s that connection to something handmade, something personal.” Ms Austin said the group ran lessons for beginners, and had welcomed NDIS clients, as well as Australian Defence Force personnel dealing with PostTraumatic Stress Disorder. “It’s very therapeutic and tactile, very sensory,” she said. “You’re touching it, making something with your hands.” The exhibition also pays tribute to life member Judith Simpkins, who passed away three years ago, with a category named in her honour. “She loved animals, so entries had to feature animals or be animal-related,” Ms Austin said. Creations on display range from functional to whimsical and showcase the vast array of

techniques used by members. Many pieces are for sale. “You have your making and then your glazing, which makes or breaks the piece,” Ms Austin said. Clay on Display is on until October 25

Exhibition has solid foundation STORY KYLIE KNIGHT CHRISSY Foreman’s work is a true reflection of the place she calls home, using ground-up rocks to make the paints that give it its vibrant colour. When the Clontarf resident goes for a walk each day, her eyes are peeled for colourful rocks she can transform into paint. The whole process takes about three weeks and involves grinding the rocks, decanting them in distilled water, drying the fine matter in the sun and mixing it with a binding agent. Foreman looks for rocks that are interesting colours. To start with, she found plenty of red rocks, but has since found purple rocks at Margate and shades of cream near the bridges at Clontarf. The result is an exhibition of 10 paintings at Redcliffe Library called Earth Paint. It is on show until October 26. “It feels so wonderful to exhibit the artworks in the same area

I collected the rocks to make the paints with. I have many memories of going to the library with my grandma each week as a kid, and I’d like to think she’s watching and enjoying the show too, from above,” Foreman said. While she has painted since she was a child, she has only been working with ‘earth paint’ this year, after reading the book The Organic Artist. The third-generation resident‘s work features natural elements and memories from her lived experience in the area along with her intuitive sense of connection to place. “It feels great. I grew up here. It’s honouring my family linage in the area,” she said.

PHOTOS DOMINIKA LIS | Lionel Kirby with his orchids.

Bloomin

addictive hobby STORY JODIE POWELL ORCHIDS have a reputation for being difficult to grow, but following some golden rules guarantees they will flourish. Redcliffe District Orchid Society and Pine Rivers Orchid Society member Lionel Kirby’s obsession with the exotic blooms began about seven year ago, after he was given one by a friend, and he said their reputation for being temperamental was undeserved.

“Orchids are not difficult to grow,” Mr Kirby said. “There are three things that plants need. “They need light – how much will depend on the plant; they need plenty of fresh air, and they need water. “Some like lots of water and some don’t need as much.” Mr Kirby is passionate about the variety to be found in orchid species, and said he continued to be amazed by the different blooms his 1000-plus specimens

had produced. “There are about 1300 species in Australia and within each species there’s a whole lot more. “In the world, there are over 30,000 species – they are among the most prolific plants in the world.” Found across the planet, except in deserts and the Arctic and Antarctic, they have been discovered as far south as Macquarie Island in the subAntarctic. The variety of Mr Kirby’s collection is such that he’s blessed with blooms year-round, some of them lasting only a few days and some lasting months. Some produce only a few stems, but others produce multiple spikes, each with more than 100 individual flowers. They are all protected from harsh sunlight, either with natural shade or shade cloth-covered enclosures. Mr Kirby, who ran a 50ha vegetable farm at Kallangur

before moving into real estate and then retirement, said the most common mistake people made with orchids was overwatering, which caused the roots to rot.

They are like us “In the summer, we drink more and in the winter we drink less. It’s the same for orchids.” Mr Kirby said many orchids could be found growing in trees in their natural environment, which regulated water retention and ensured they had time to dry out without becoming waterlogged. In winter, he generally waters once a week, while in summer it’s twice or three times. All of Mr Kirby’s orchids are in pots and he carefully chooses the potting mix depending on

how much moisture retention is required by each species. Some are happy in bark, perlite and charcoal. “The bark helps with drainage; the perlite creates space in the mix for water to drain and the charcoal ensures there is air,” Mr Kirby said. If a species requires a little more moisture, he adds coconut fibre. While Mr Kirby fertilises once a week using a mixture he buys in bulk, he said every second week or even once a month would enhance a plant’s growth. “You can use something like Thrive and water it over the whole plant, and alternate with Seasol, which acts like a vitamin,” he said. His final advice? Join an orchid society. “The best thing to do is join an orchid group. You get to know other people and it all takes over!”

Hooked On Fishing and Boating Fishing

WAYNE GROOMES

with

G’DAY folks, this week I would like to walk you through how I plan a trip. Weather and tides are critical elements to where we fish and what we target. The wind often determines if our day is comfortable or not. It can also play a role in locating bait fish and the target species. I like to start any trip with a quick look at an app on the smart phone covering wind direction, wind strength, tide times, and the possibility of rain. This information allows me to choose between fishing from the shoreline or from my tinny. Often, if the wind is above 12 knots for a large part of the day, I will be land-based somewhere with the wind at my back. If it’s below 12 knots, my tinny will get a run. I definitely prefer to fish when the tide and the wind are running in the same direction. I will use Friday, October 2 as an example. Wind forecast at first light was 3 knots from the east. The tide was low at 4am. The moon was 99 per cent full. No rain was predicted. This

tells me that I have a very low tide rising to a very high tide, so there’ll be a strong current. These conditions would lead me to planning a trip in my tinny. I would be in the water no later than 3.30am, with a view to fish just east of the Scarborough reef. My target would be snapper on the 5m line that runs north/ south from Scarborough to Woody Point. I would have a window between 4-7am. Trophy snapper are often found in the shallow waters off Scarborough. I would begin burleying heavily. My rig would be a single 6/0 with no weight for the first hour then adding a size 00 or 0 ball sinker depending on current for the last two hours. My bait would be live herring or squid, and if live bait could not be sorted, then fresh squid, mullet or pilchard. I’d cast a short distance from the rear of the tinny into the burley trail and slowly let line out, allowing the bait to float down the burley trail. I then continue to release line until it’s outside the burley trail or gets caught up on the bottom. Retrieve and repeat until hook up.

THE saltwater yabby is a fascinating animal. They are also easy to catch using the locally-designed yabby pump and fantastic bait for the full range of estuary and inshore species. Not many fish can resist the humble yabby. They are widely distributed on protected sand and mud flats throughout Moreton Bay. The Toorbul area of Pumicestone Passage is a popular and productive location to harvest them. Their burrow structures are very complex with lots of interconnected chambers and passages. Males have a single large claw which is very distinct and can draw blood if they nip you! Saltwater yabbies play a very important role in the ecology of sand and mud banks. Their burrowing activities change the sediment chemistry and provide habitat for other animals. They are an “ecosystem engineer” because of these activities. Yabbies are also a favourite food in Moreton Bay for migratory wader birds such as the eastern curlew which burrow into the sandflat with their long, curved beak to eat them. Yabbies can be harvested all year around but have

DR DAZZA two reproductive periods in Moreton Bay. The major one is from March to June with a minor one from August to October. Females carry their eggs underneath their body and the eggs are colour yellow through to orange depending on their exact reproductive stage. The best way to keep yabbies for bait is an aerated saltwater that is kept cool with frequent changes of water. Fortunately, yabbies are highly resilient to harvesting pressure and many areas continue to produce despite many decades of harvesting. Always though take only what you need for immediate needs. Dr Daryl McPhee is a marine scientist at Bond University.

Home your family will WITH five bedrooms, a secluded backyard and light-filled living areas, there’s plenty to love about this Woody Point home. High ceilings on the lower level, a private deck attached to the master bedroom and two separate entertaining areas combine to create a home made for family living. Waterfront Properties Redcliffe selling agent Mary Di Marco said the home, built in 2005 and recently renovated, was ideally situated, just a five-minute walk to the beach.

“It’s a gorgeous family home’’ with a huge master bedroom and lounge areas up and down,” Ms Di Marco said.

love

Also on the upper level are three bedrooms with built-in robes, a living area and family bathroom. Downstairs, there is a fifth bedroom, as well as a modern kitchen, living-dining area and separate rumpus room, all of which overlook an alfresco deck with clever screens that can be raised and lowered to protect against the elements. “It’s a beautiful family home just waiting for somebody who wants to put their own stamp on it,” Ms Di Marco said. Offers over $790,000, negotiable.

“The back garden is nice and grassy, perfect for a game of cricket, and there are two little veggie gardens.

Mary Di Marco at Waterfront Properties Redcliffe

On the other hand you have what I call: • 5-star real estate. Just like a 5-star restaurant this is where your agent handles similar ingredients with absolute care and attention to detail, all the while focusing on producing the highest quality outcome for you, the seller. They may not produce the same volume of sales as those in the “fast” model, but they focus on the absolute quality of the final result (and you can see it in their sold prices). If you are thinking of selling? YOU HAVE THE CHOICE – Fast or 5-star! From what I’ve seen it’s almost impossible to achieve both. If you think the same way as Edward (or for that matter myself), then we need to talk. As always, I hope that you have a wonderful week smile

450sqm

The master bedroom, with a striking timber feature wall, is large enough to easily accommodate a king-sized bed and is home to an enviable walkin-robe and an ensuite, complete with a spa bath.

Who loves watching MKR or Masterchef? The other night I was watching a popular “competitive” cooking show on the telly and it reminded me of a famous saying from Edward de Bono: “The winner is the chef who takes the same ingredients as everybody else and produces the best result.” Selling real estate is not dissimilar. Why is it that you can take two agents both armed with similar available tools and get two totally different results on almost identical homes? This is what I have learnt from many years in real estate. There are a couple of different business models: • We have the phenomenon of what I term “FAST” real estate. Just like the “fast food” business model it is based on (i.e. punching out as many meals as possible and keeping it cheap) FAST real estate relies on high volume, high turnover, quick sales and this can affect the quality of the outcome.

Warriors in pursuit of record

Eyes on a club trifecta PHOTO DOMINIKA LIS | Dolphins Under-16s at training.

STORY KYLIE KNIGHT THE Dolphins Under-16s Division 1 side will be looking to make it a trifecta for the club, when they take on Norths in the Grand Final on October 18. Football development officer Steve Crawford expects it to be a tough contest, with not much separating the teams this season. “It will be a nice tight tussle and it can go either way, to be honest. There might only be 2-4 points in it. It might come down to a field goal,” Crawford said. It follows a successful

weekend for the club, with the Under-16 Division 2 and 3 teams both winning Grand Finals. The Division 2 side kept Wests Mitchelton scoreless at Albany Creek, with a commanding 48-0 win. “They’ve been playing consistently well this year and have only lost one or two games. They’ve done really well,” Crawford said. The Division 3 side is a combination of 15 and 16-year-olds and beat North Jets 20-14. Crawford said there hadn’t been much between the two teams all season, and the score

fluctuated throughout the whole game. Crawford said it was unusual for a club to have three U16 teams, with parttime jobs, girlfriends and other distractions often prompting players to drop out of the sport. “This group has always been a strong group of players, with plenty of numbers from 13s right through, and they’ve just stuck together,” he said. “It’s a credit to them.” So, what’s the secret? “Just the way we’ve trained them, we’ve trained them as a whole group –

Division 1 and 2. They’ve done a full preseason together developing the same skill levels,” Crawford said. The Division 3 side has been mentored by Intrust Super Cup players Jarrett Bolland, Justin Worley and Sheldon Pitama, who have assisted the coaching team all season. “When you’re strong in the 16s and 18s you’ve got some kids coming through, which is a good sign for the club,” Crawford said. The majority will trial for the Mal Meninga squad and those who make it will continue with preseason

training. Those who don’t, will go into U17s and U18s sides, with the aim of making the U20s team in a couple of years. Crawford said the teams had coped with a condensed 10-game season and altered finals format well. “It’s the only grade we didn’t lose any players, in fact we gained a few,” he said. Across the club, only three of the 10 juniors teams didn’t play semi-finals. “That’s 75 per cent, which is pretty good,” he said.

THE Vodafone Warriors want to be the most supported club in Australasia this year, and they believe their growing fan base in the Moreton Bay Region is key to making this happen. Chief executive Cameron George said they had to beat West Coast Eagles’ 101,000 members to earn the title, and a $10 Vodafone Warriors Supporter offer for the month of October should help the cause. It will also help grow the game with 50 per cent of each membership to be evenly dispersed among junior clubs on the Central Coast, in Redcliffe, Tamworth and Tenterfield as well as New Zealand. “We see clubs in Australia, with supporter bases in excess of 100,000, and we want to finish ahead of that to close out a year that has demanded that we challenge ourselves,” he said. He said the Warriors had become ‘everyone’s second team” after a season which threw more challenges at them than others in the NRL. Priced from NZ$10, plus GST, the 2021 Vodafone Warriors Supporter offer is available online until October 31, 2020. Visit warriors.kiwi/membership

Patience pays off for Evans STORY NICK CROCKFORD KYLE Evans is having his patience tested between Formula Ford races, but the Redcliffe teenager and his car are certainly not standing idle. The 16-year-old’s first Formula Ford testing was in October last year and he had to wait 10 months for his racing debut. But the wait was worth it. Evans made a stunning debut in the Formula Ford 1600 Series in late August finishing third at Morgan Park Raceway in Warwick. But with COVID-19 hitting the 2020 program hard, he must now wait until November 20-22 for the Motorsport Australia State Championship. Preparations are gathering pace with Evans taking his red open-wheel Formula Ford Van Diemen RF04 to Queensland Raceway for a day’s practice recently. The wide-open spaces of practice were a far cry from his Formula Ford debut where he started race one on the front row, just behind Cameron McLeod, with the 2018 and 2019 national champions Dylan Fahey and Tim Hamilton on row two. He took third place. The following day’s races saw Evans finish third-fifth-third with a best lap of 1:22.307 in race three.

Sport Briefs Players needed The Lakes Cricket Club, in North Lakes, is looking for a few more players to complete its Under-13 Girls and Under-14 junior teams. Further information and how to sign-on is available on The Lakes Facebook page.

Just champion Margaret Partridge is the Bramble Bay Bowls Club Ladies Singles Champion 2020 after beating runner up Clare Hill, 25-23 in a close and exciting game.

Mini Masters

He finished the weekend on 83 points behind Hamilton 122 and McLeod 102. Greg Fahey, from Greg Fahey Motorsports which owned and prepared the car, says: “It was the debut we had all been waiting for”. Evans spent four days in the Ezystone-sponsored car and says: “It was a massive learning curve with lots of ways to improve.” After the Queensland titles in November, he may only have a short break be-

fore a non-championship meeting pencilled in for Lakeside Raceway on December 5. His career began in the 2015 Junior Top Guns two-stroke kart series at Warwick finishing second and in 2016-17 drove a lime green James Courtney JC Kart in the KA4 Ju n i o r Light and

KA3 Junior races. With sister Ursula, 14, he is also running a Bucket Hat Fundraiser to help families with young members facing life-threatening medical conditions. The hats are available for $20 of which the Kyle Evans Motorsport Team will donate $5 for fundraising. Visit kyleevansmotorsport.com.au

Big season for women’s sides STORY ANNA MEHONOSHEN SENIOR WOMEN’S CHAIR

REDCLIFFE lost a few players ahead of the Brisbane Senior Women’s season restart in July, following the COVID lockdown, but was still able to field teams in Divisions 1, 2, 3 and 5. The Division Five women combined experience with new players and made it to the grand final for the fourth year in a row. Looking to add to their three years of premierships, unfortunately they went down 3–1 to Easts. Claire McIvor, also a member of our Junior Turf division 1 team, was the scorer. Coach and goalkeeper Janene ‘Shrimp’ McCall and teammate Anita Sikes were due to play for their state age groups, but COVID forced the cancellation of national tournaments. The Division One team, coached by Steve Lancaster, returned with some new faces including Sarah Wall

from our Junior Turf Division One Girls. The players worked hard and had some close games against top sides. Five players, Ella White, Jordn Office, Georgina Munro, Annelyse Tevant and Hannah Cullum-Sanders were named in the Queensland Under 18s but again all national tournaments were cancelled. Jordn Office was named in Hockey Queensland’s High-Performance Squad, the team which the Brisbane Blaze team is selected from to compete in the national Hockey One. Redcliffe’s Division Two team, coached Cameron Howes, improved its final position, doubled the number of wins and goals and cut goals conceded by a third on the previous year as promising players from Junior Turf Division 1 were blended into the side. The Division Three women also had a big development year under coach Gavin Fields with several hard-fought games.

North Lakes Mustangs’ Melchi Mashayanyika was named in the Under-9 Mini Masters Dream Football Team at the Gold Coast Champions Youth Cup. Matthew Clarke was selected for the Under-11 Dream Team. Mustangs finished ninth in the Under-9s and eighth in the Under-11s.

Pitcher has eyes on big league STORY NICK CROCKFORD KAI-NOA Wynyard will soon swap the Redcliffe Padres for US Major League Baseball (MLB) giants the Texas Rangers. The 18-year-old pitcher has signed a professional contract and is likely to fly to Arizona in February for training at Rangers’ new US$12.5 million performance centre. He will start in the club’s Rookie League (equivalent to A Grade here) and hope to progress through Single-A, High-A, Double-A and Triple-A to the MLB side. It is reported on baseball.com.au that the Texas Rangers had been tracking Wynyard’s progress for two years before moving in with a professional contract. It is a big move for Wynyard, who started at Padres at five and has played juniors for Queensland and Australia, but he says: “It’s exciting and I think I am ready. “I see it as another challenge. The interest started in January, after the national titles, but not from

KAI’S JOURNEY SO FAR • He pitched in 14 games for Redcliffe Padres in the Great Brisbane League last season • His next stop will be Texas Rangers, established in 1961, based in Arlington and part of the American League West Division. • Rangers have won two AL Pennants, and seven West Division titles, but not the World Series. • Texas Rangers’ new Performance Centre can house around 150 players and officials Texas Rangers at that point. “A month ago, they contacted me and said they were really interested. Two weeks later they offered me a contract.”

The former Redcliffe State High School captain is believed to be only the fifth Padres’ player to progress to the MLB and first since Sam Holland joined San Diego Padres in 2012. “We are incredibly proud of Kai-Noa for securing this contract,” Redcliffe Padres President David Hopkins said “He is someone we are very proud to have as a role model for our up-and-coming juniors to aspire to.” Wynyard has lived in Scarborough all his life and will follow his Texas team’s training programs before going to Rangers Village for spring training. It is a second chance for Wynyard to go stateside after COVID restrictions stopped him taking up a full scholarship at a US college. That came after he was in the Australian team which finished fourth in last year’s Under 18 World Cup in South Korea. He’s the third member of that team to sign professionally.

P.58 // SPORT

First for league REDCLIFFE Padres are believed to be the first club in the 74-year history of Greater Brisbane League baseball to field two teams in Division One. And the season’s first fixture saw both sides pitched against each other in a local derby at Padres’ Opening Night on Friday. The bold decision was taken by Padres’ Senior Club Coach Phil Overlack due to the number of juniors aged 15 and over now eligible for senior baseball and six US college players who are still in Australia due to COVID restrictions. Padres, the biggest single-season baseball club in the country, is using its second Division One team (Grey) as a development side. Back-to-back home runs by Wade Dutton and Carter Bell sealed victory for the Reds team, though special mention goes to Joel Hogan, on the mound for the development Grey side. The Reds collected the series win with another narrow win on Sunday. Grey’s Luke Smith forced extras with a two-down, two-run homerun in the ninth, before Ryan Fritsch’s homerun at the bottom of the 12th delivered the Reds’ winning runs. The special evening was capped off by life members, Keith Land and Keith Sharpe, acting as honorary coaches for the opposing teammates.

Massive weekend of finals Tigers take the trophy

THE Redcliffe AFL Tigers under-16s claimed grand final victory over Sandgate at the weekend in a nail-biting finish. With minutes to go in the final quarter, the Hawks kicked a goal to narrow the gap on the Tigers’ lead to six points, before a missed shot at goal brought the score to five points the dif1. ference. In the end, the GKS Law under-16s Tigers walked away with the trophy, with the final scores at 6-3-39 to 5-4-34, and player Adam Dekker named as best on ground. Coach Steve Jenkins paid tribute to Sandgate, saying Redcliffe knew they were the team to beat from their first game of the year. “Our first game of the year we played against you guys on a Friday night at our ground and it was a pretty close one,” Jenkins said. “We identified that 2. you guys were clearly the best team in the competition and we looked at what you were doing closely and tried to emulate that.” Jenkins said as the season matured, so did the team’s momentum. Redcliffe Tigers GKS Law Under-14 Black team coach Shane Ward said his players had faced the tremendous challenge of taking on undefeated Kawana Park on their home ground in 4. the North Blue (Division 1) Grand Final, with Kawana Park ultimately claiming victory 7-4-46 to the Tigers’ 6-7-43. “In the last quarter (with the Tigers) just two goals behind, Kawana got the first goal,” Ward said. “What would normally hurt the spirit appeared to challenge the Tigers and they responded kicking the next few goals to be just 3. 5. four points down with under a minute to play and 1. International addition to squad STORY NICK CROCKFORD PENINSULA Power has signed junior international goalkeeper Duro Dragicevic after a season-ending injury to Jake Reesby. Duro Dragicevic, a member of the 2015 Joeys that played in the FIFA Under 17 World Cup in Chile,

made his debut in the weekend win over Gold Coast United. He played National Youth League for Sydney FC in 2017/18 and 2018/19 as well as making 22 appearances in the NSW Men’s NPL competition in 2018. Dragicevic, pictured, recently played in the USA College system before returning to Australia this

year. He replaces Reesby who suffered a serious elbow injury in the 2-0 victory over Gold Coast Knights on October 8. Power will meet Easts Tigers at AJ Kelly Park this Saturday at 6.30pm and travel to Brisbane City on Wednesday October 21 for a 7.30pm kick-off. Both opponents are in

the bottom four of the NPL Qld. Power are third on the ladder, three points being leaders Olympic and level with second-placed Lions. However, Power have games in hand on both rivals, one being Wednesday’s trip to Brisbane City. Victories in both catch-up games would see Power on top of the table.

Raiders prevail in solid victory

MORETON Bay Raiders’ Under 14 Division Three side has completed a magnificent double. A 24-10 victory over Valleys on Sunday added the grand final to the Rugby League Brisbane minor premiership trophy. It was a major landmark for Raiders which regrouped for 2020 with a new committee and was rewarded with three sides making the finals. “The future is bright and I’m absolutely privileged to be a part of this club,” said Rad Stephenson, coach of the winning Under 14 Division Three team, in a Facebook post, “It really hit home yesterday (Sunday) back at the club just how much bringing home that trophy meant to the Raiders family.” Raiders Under 14 Division One team, which finished fourth on the ladder, went down 26-20 to minor premiers Logan in a nail-biting semi-final. Despite having one of the smaller packs in the competition, Raiders went toeto-toe with Logan. With 11 minutes to go it was 20-20. Unfortunately, Raiders’ defence, which had been gallant throughout, was breached one more time by Logan to seal victory, but Logan found a winning score. Pine Central proved too strong for Raiders Open Men in their Division Three semi-final, running out 30-26 in another close encounter. However, it was a ‘gutsy effort’ by the Open Men’s team, which had finished second in the regular season level on points with Pine Central, but their final opponents turned the tables at Emerson Park, Grange last week.

Double dozen off to state champs STORY NICK CROCKFORD RECORDS have tumbled at Redcliffe Leagues Softball with 20 players, so far, named in seven Queensland sides for next year’s national championships. And there’s still the women’s selections to come, which club president Carrie Te Wani reckons could lead to “three or four more”. It is a remarkable achieve-

ment for the Redcliffe association which usually has representative numbers in the lower end of single figures. “We did not expect this,” Te Wani said, “we believe it’s a record for representative numbers for Redcliffe … and there’s more to come. “We were aiming, especially in the Under-14s, just to keep kids coming back into the program. It was not about representative numbers. It’s been a long

road. We didn’t really have a boys’ program in the last three years. It is hard to get the boys involved because we’re competing with other sports. We’ve always had girls’ numbers, but now we’ve been able to put a team on the diamond in every age group of the state championships, for the first time in years.” All were selected following the recent state championships where Redcliffe won

the Under-18 Women’s title beating Redlands. The state squads have been selected for next year’s national championships scheduled to be held at Waverley, Victoria, on April 10-14, 2021. Jesse Barnes and Julian Scott-Davis, Redcliffe’s players in the State Under 23 Men’s squad, will go to their national titles on June 29-July 3, 2021, in Queensland.
