Santa Paws makes cheery return STORY KYLIE KNIGHT SANTA Claus is coming to town. In fact, the jolly man in red will make a special visit to Peninsula Animal Aid on Saturday, November 14.

He is coming so families and their pets can have their Christmas photo taken, while raising much needed funds for the animal shelter at the same time.

“These high-quality photos are great to give to family and friends for Christmas. They also make great mementos for yourself,” she said.

Rescuer’s plea to drivers STORY NICK CROCKFORD KOALAS in this region are facing one of their toughest years – but among many grim statistics one is particularly “disappointing” rescuers.

Only 10-15 per cent of motorists stop after hitting a koala until help arrives, according to Moreton Bay Koala Rescue.

“It’s really disappointing,” said senior rescuer Mike Fowler. “We’d like people to stay with the animal until we can get there.

“Usually we can get there within 20 minutes. We have volunteers based across the region who can respond day or night.”

Halfway through the breeding season, more than 80 koalas had died on our region’s roads. More than 40 of those since June.

Mr Fowler said Elizabeth Ave, Kippa-Ring/Clontarf, was “dreadful”; Anzac Ave “atrocious”; Eatons Crossing Rd was a “disaster” with 13 koalas killed on it this year and Youngs Crossing had “a number of issues”.

“This year’s hit-by-cars figure as bad as any year,” Mr Fowler, a rescuer for five years, said.

“It’s traumatic for volunteers who have to go out to these situations.”

New fire station election pledge STORY NICK CROCKFORD NORTH Lakes and Mango Hill will get a new fire station, covering both suburbs, under a pledge by the Queensland Labor party ahead of next week’s State

Election. The announcement follows a long campaign by Mango Hill Progress Association (MHPA).

Fire chiefs have also been calling for a new fire and rescue service.

to North Lakes and Mango Hill are at Deception Bay, Petrie, Kippa-Ring and Burpengary.

State Labor Member for Bancroft Chris Whiting told last week’s MHPA meeting: “You should be really proud. This would not have happened without the progress association”.

LNP candidate for Bancroft Phil Carlson said he too would be “fighting for a fire station, if I am elected.

It needs to happen”.

Peter Flannery said top of his wish list from the State Government was funding for a koala hospital.

“Wildlife volunteers currently have to transport koalas to the RSPCA in Wacol or Australia Zoo on the Sunshine Coast for emergency medical treatment, which is an untenable twohour journey. I’m hoping for a solution,” he said.

Mr Fowler said rescuers would like to see speed limits reduced from 70-80km/h to 60km/h and better lighting on roads in areas of known koala activity.

“What’s 20km/h if we want to make a difference,” he said, “we know it will be hard in semi-rural areas, we know there will be a great cost.”

Cr Flannery shared rescuers’ concerns and also urged drivers to slow down.

“Council has been warning drivers about this for months, because koala breeding season started early this year. But the reality is warning signs won’t save koalas, driving responsibly will.”

The figures are in line with predictions from Griffith University Senior Lecturer School of Humanities, Languages and Social Science Dr Paul Williams, who said more than 50 percent of people were expected to vote before election day.

In Redcliffe, 12,101 (26 percent) of voters had applied for a postal vote, and 9556 (25 percent) had cast a prepoll vote by October 24. At the 2017 State Election, just 10 percent of votes in Redcliffe were postal and 30 percent were pre-poll.

In Bancroft, 28 percent (10,283) of registered voters plan to vote by post, compared with 11 percent in 2017. Three years ago, 26 percent of votes were cast at pre-polling booths, with 19 percent (6956) already cast this year.

Thirty percent (12,301) of Murrumba’s registered voters have applied for a postal vote, up on 11 percent who voted by post in 2017. Already, 5621 (13.7 percent) have pre-polled, compared with 28 percent three years ago.

Incentives spark building boom STORY KYLIE KNIGHT PROPERTY developers and builders say there is a construction boom across the region as they and their customers benefit from the Federal Government’s HomeBuilder scheme.

The grants, announced in June to stimulate the construction industry and subsequently the economy, provide $25,000 to eligible owner-occupiers to build a new home or substantially renovate an existing home when the contract is signed between June 4 and December 31, 2020.

When combined with existing State Government first home owner grant programs, stamp duty concessions and other programs, it has provided significant incentives for first home owners to build.

Stockland Senior Development Manager Blair Britton said there had been strong demand for its Newport development as a result.

“We’ve fast-tracked land

releases and the construction of 18 townhomes, so more Australians can make use of the grant and realise the dream of home ownership, with another 18 townhomes set to be released before Christmas,” Mr Bitton said.

“The Morrison Government’s economic plan is

delivering support through the HomeBuilder program to create local jobs in the construction industry and giving local families the opportunity they need to get into a home of their own,” Mr Howarth said “Since the program was announced, first home buyers have flooded the market. In Queensland, loans for the construction of new houses have increased by 26.2 percent.

“This means more tradies working on the tools, more suppliers supplying materials, more retail workers selling trades equipment and more houses in the market.”

Porter Davis Queensland State Manager Grant Whinnett said developers and builders were offering fantastic deals and incentives, the banks were offering record-low interest rates and this was overlayed by the Federal Government’s stimulus.

able,” Mr Whinnett said.

“We’re seeing in excess of 35 per cent volume increase as a direct result of the HomeBuilder stimulus that the government has put forward.”

This is across South East Queensland, but there is particularly strong demand in the Moreton Bay Region.

“It’s definitely giving tradespeople and suppliers renewed confidence about

the market. It’s keeping them employed,” he said.

The majority of first home builders were opting for single-house dwellings but affordable double-storey homes were also an option many were going for.

There is a diverse range of people, of varying ages, building as a result.

“We’re seeing the whole range – professionals, blue collar workers. It’s had a pro-

found impact across all segments,” Mr Whinnett said.

The business has had to grow its sales, operations and construction teams to deal with demand.

“We’ll see confidence well and truly into the new calendar year,” he said.

Porter Davis’ main projects in the Moreton Bay Region are at Newport, Caboolture, Morayfield, North Lakes and Griffin.

Closing the gap on crime

Prepare for delays NEW speed restrictions are about to be introduced around the Deception Bay Rd overpass on the Bruce Highway, ahead of a $163 million upgrade.

From November 1, speed limits on the highway will be reduced to 80km/h in both directions at the interchange, until work is finished in early 2023.

Speed limits will be reduced on Old Gympie Rd, New Settlement Rd, Deception Bay Rd and Eastern Service Rd to 40km/h, while works are carried out. At all other times they will be 60km/h.

Partial lane closures, traffic controllers, temporary detours, reduced speed limits and road signage will be in place during construction to ensure the safety of motorists and road workers.

STORY JODIE POWELL POLICE are urging residents to register their closed-circuit TV systems to help in the fight against crime and make the community safer.

Senior Constable Jo-Anne Arthur said registering systems would help police map where cameras were, if a crime was committed.

“Locating cameras can be extremely time-consuming for investigators,” she said.

“Knowing the location of established CCTV systems within the community will maximise the efficiency of investigative resources and minimise the loss of potential evidence.”

Sen-Constable Arthur said signing up to the Community Camera Alliance program allowed police to map the location of cameras in an area where an offence had occurred.

“It means we can track things in real time, rather than waiting until the next day,” she said.

Newport resident Julie Sutton signed up to the program and said she wanted to help keep the community safe.

“We did have an unofficial one, where neighbours got together and shared if things happened,” Ms Sutton said.

“I was looking at doing an official one with Neighbourhood Watch and then this came along.”

Ms Sutton said being part of the Community Camera Alliance created a strong sense of community and shared responsibility.

“We’re all one family really, it’s knowing that somebody cares.”

Sen-Constable Arthur said CCTV was a crucial investigative tool in modern day policing.

Launched in May, alliance has attracted more than 50 registrations across the region, but Sen-Constable Arthur said more residents and businesses were needed to boost its effectiveness.

“Registering your CCTV cameras does not mean that police can access your footage remotely. It is purely a method for police to see where the cameras are in the area,” she said.

“Registration details will be stored in an existing secure police database which is utilised, and solely accessed, by the QPS.”

STORY NICK CROCKFORD SEVERE storms in recent days are a sign of things to come this season as State Emergency Services crews, Moreton Bay Regional Council and the Bureau of Meteorology brace for wild weather. They are urging residents to also get ready.

The La Nina weather system, forecast by the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM), may bring higher than average rain and more tropical cyclones during the next four months.

SES units have been preparing, taking on more recruits and forming a new team, while Moreton Bay Regional Council has hit the road with Get Ready information sessions.

At the same time, dam levels have been sliding

towards a five-year low as daily average water use rises – last week by around five per cent across South East Queensland.

“Don’t get caught out and don’t become complacent, the only way to protect your family is by being prepared,” Mayor Peter Flannery said. “While we can’t prevent disasters and storms in Moreton Bay, we can prepare for them to minimise the impacts on our community.”

The region’s seven SES units - at Redcliffe, Deception Bay, Murrumba Downs, Arana Hills, Caboolture, Bribie and Woodford - are already hard at work. A new specialised team is being set up as the group’s incident command centre, based at Murrumba Downs and recruitment has started.

Moreton Bay Regon SES controller Henk van den Ende said: “In recent weeks, many (people) have applied to join the (region’s) unit.

“We have seen numbers jump from 360 to 380. Redcliffe Group had 11 applications.”

Scores of hand-held radios are expected within days.

Last month, Moreton Bay Regional Council mechanics and technicians completed a twice-yearly inspection of all SES vehicles and

BoM is forecasting the La Nina to last until the end of February following one of the driest two-year periods on record.

Predictions give Redcliffe, Deception Bay and North Lakes a 62 per cent chance of at least 400mm of rain from November to January - beating the average of 374mm, 375mm and 369mm respectively.

A FULL program of activities awaits the over 50s at Redcliffe Senior Citizens Centre, proving age is no barrier to being active and having fun.

The centre, which has been running since 1973 and has 250-300 members, offers a wide range of activities including table tennis, darts, snooker, cards 500, line dancing, indoor bowls, mahjong, new vogue dance, and hoy/bingo.

Vice-president Peter Tonks said anyone aged 50120 years was welcome and they could take part in an activity that suited them.

Treasurer Barbara Tonks said members could join in as few or as many activities as they wanted.

“It gives them purpose to get up and get out. When they get here, they’re glad they did,” Mrs Tonks said.

She said members really missed taking part in activities and seeing each other, when the centre was closed from March 19 until the end of July due to COVID-19

Helping jobseekers make WISE choices

THIS employment services provider does not just find jobs for its customers – it opens up a whole new world for them.

WISE Employment Business Manager for Outer North Brisbane Roxanne Brouwer said the organisation, with offices at Redcliffe, Strathpine and Caboolture, took a holistic approach.

As one of the few providers in the region specialising in finding work for people living with a disability, Ms Brouwer said WISE helped people gain jobs with supportive employers.

She said WISE Employment supported workers and jobseekers with a range of services, including resumes, interview preparation, education and accessing funding for workplace modifications.

“Disabilities can range from asthma, anxiety, depression and other mental health illnesses, to physical challenges,” Ms Brouwer said.

“A person with a disability can face additional obstacles, and that’s where we come in.”

Ms Brouwer said support for employers and workers did not end with a job placement.

“We have an in-work support consultant who can also provide on-the-job support.

We can be there to provide support forever – there’s no end date,” she said.

“That kind of support is absolutely necessary, particularly if you have someone who’s maybe been a concreter all their life and they have no idea how to use a computer. We look at what their transferable skills are.

“Once people start work-

ing and have that support, the change you see in them is amazing.”

Among the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic were increased levels of anxiety and depression, as people struggled to come to terms with losing their jobs.

“People come in with very high levels of anxiety, so it’s about forming a relationship, treating them as an individual and working as a team. We just open up a whole new world to look at things differently.”

PENINSULA smash repairers are urging motorists to check their insurance policies to ensure they have the freedom to choose who repairs their cars if they have a bingle.

They have experienced a notable drop in business since major insurance

companies created large assessment and repair centres in Brisbane, driving local business away.

GS Panel Repairs owner Ben Brockway said the centres meant some vehicles that had previously been repaired on the peninsula were instead being repaired in Brisbane.

“With the repair centres,

it’s not about (the insurance company) making money, it’s about saving money,” he said.

Mr Brockway has been in the industry 30 years and bought the 40-year-old business three years ago.

Since then, he has had to let several staff go due to a fall in custom, and that has flowed on to his suppliers.

Bee Gees Way shuts for works

Hornibrook legacy lives on

JULIE Hornibrook is justifiably proud of the legacy her grandfather left for the Redcliffe peninsula – and for Queensland as a whole.

Sir Manuel Richard Hornibrook was the visionary behind what was to become the longest road viaduct in the Southern Hemisphere.

He worked with his five brothers to see the project – which linked Clontarf to Sandgate – to fruition.

Ms Hornibrook, who will speak at the Redcliffe Museum this month to mark 85 years since the Hornibrook Highway was opened, said it was touching Redcliffe still had such affection for the bridge.

“One of the reasons Hornibrook was so beloved (as a company) was because it looked after the workforce,”

The Hornibrook Highway was the second of three bridges built by the Hornibrooks, providing desperately needed employment during the Great Depression.

The first, the William Jolly Bridge, opened in May 1932, 10 days after the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

The Hornibrook Highway followed, opening in October 1935 and work began on the Story Bridge that same year.

“They were building up

the skills for the workforce,” Ms Hornibrook said.

“I think that 10 years in the family must have been really intense because Grandpa would have lived and breathed work and his brothers worked with him.”

Ms Hornibrook recalled the bridge named in honour of her family as providing a backdrop to her childhood. “I remember driving over the Hornibrook Highway when we would visit my grandparents on Sundays,” she said.

“We didn’t have seatbelts and we would see who could hit their heads on the roof of the car.

“It was only later that we realised that our adventures were grandpa watching over his works.”

Ms Hornibrook said her grandfather was proud the works built the profile of

Queensland – and Australia – in the Commonwealth.

She gained a fellowship with the State Library in 2015, which allowed her to research the Hornibrook Highway and the William Jolly and Story bridges.

Mayor Peter Flannery said technology installed for the launch of Stage 2 of Bee Gees Way more than five years ago had stood the test of time well outdoors, where it was exposed to salty sea breezes and the elements.

“There’s no questioning the immortality of this major tourism drawcard on the peninsula, but these works are essential to ensure no one questions How Deep Is Our Love for the Bee Gees,” Mayor Flannery said.

Bee Gees Way closed on October 12, and work is expected to be completed before Christmas to ensure minimal disruption to visitors.

Councillor Karl Winchester (Div 6) said he was thrilled to be able to continue the legacy the Bee Gees had left.

“The Bee Gees hold a special place in the hearts of many in Redcliffe and it is a priority of Council to ensure these local heroes are continued to be remembered for their important contribution to the arts and entertainment industry,” Cr Winchester said.

“The team at Pro Av Solutions did the initial audio-visual installation and have done a great job of maintaining it over the past five years, so I know they’ll deliver again to keep this attraction Stayin’ Alive.”

SUTTONS Beach at Redcliffe is now accessible to everyone, after beach matting was installed on October 13.

The matting, in front of the Suttons Beach Rotunda, will make it easier for people with prams, walkers and wheelchairs to enjoy a day at the beach.

It follows a successful trial of matting at Bribie Island.

Mayor Peter Flannery said he was proud to tear down the barriers associated with sand for people with mobility challenges.

“I’ve said I want Moreton Bay to become the most accessible tourism region in South East Queensland and this new beach matting takes us 50m towards realising that goal,” Mayor Flannery said.

“This is an historic day for the Redcliffe peninsula because, for the first time, there are no barriers to anyone enjoying our iconic waterfront sands.”

Access to the matting is provided from the carpark via a newly-constructed access ramp from the main pathway.

Cr Karl Winchester (Div 6) said the region’s proxim-

ity to Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast was a tourism goldmine.

“We’ve seen people travel from far and wide to use the accessible matting on Bribie Island and I’m sure Redcliffe will see a similar uplift,” Cr Winchester said.

“Compared to rival destinations, we’re more convenient to visit thanks to an abundance of parking, we have less traffic congestion, better value accommodation and our hospitality is second to none.

“This beach matting will remain in place 24/7 to give people the confidence to enjoy the beach anytime they wish to go. This is a key difference to most other beaches around the country, where the matting is rolled in and out depending on the surf lifesaver patrol times.”

By December, the council is aiming to have a beach wheelchair available for free hire. The beach matting at Suttons Beach is part of an initial trial, during which council will monitor the mats to see how they adapt to this new location.

The matting has been laid out in the shape of a square to allow for more people to use the matting while keeping a safe distance.

PUPILS at Humpybong State School may have been inspired by famous artists, but it was their creativity that was celebrated when the school hosted its art show last week.

Students, families and the broader school community were treated to a feast for the eyes when they enjoyed the exhibition during three COVID-safe viewings.

Art specialist teacher Susan Gossow said she was thrilled with the display, which featured 1400 pieces and took three days to install.

“I’m blown away. I’m so proud of the kids and proud of their perseverance,” Mrs Gossow said.

Inspired by artists such as Gustav Klimt, Joan Miro and Alberto Giacometti, and the world around them, the pupils produced a vibrant array of work.

There was everything from pears, bees and alfoil sculptures to Steam Punk multi-media work.

THREE pupils from Grace Lutheran Primary School have rallied their school and business community to deliver more than 100 day packs to The Breakfast Club Redcliffe.

It is the result of four months’ work, which began when they launched The Pink Hat Appeal, using social media and the SchoolAid platform.

Mary O’Dwyer, Samantha Coghlan and Jenny McCann raised more than $1600 and put together 50 large day packs and 50 smaller packs, plus 15 crisis packs.

Mary said they were motivated by a desire to help some of the most vulnerable people in the community.

“It feels really good (to do this). It definitely puts a warm feeling in my heart,” she said. Samantha said they were grateful to receive assistance and support from many people.

These included students, families and staff of Grace Lutheran Primary School; principal Trudy Moala

and Deputy Principal Kathy Stock; Pastor Mark Brinkmann and Grace Lutheran Church, Redcliffe; Federal Member for Petrie Luke Howarth; SchoolAid; and their families and friends.

They also thanked Officeworks, Rothwell; Margaret Heaton, of Mini Care Mates; Toothkind, Deagon; Redcliffe, Sandgate and Bracken Ridge Woolworths; Golden Circle, Morayfield and Terry White Chemist, Redcliffe.

The Breakfast Club Redcliffe Chairperson Michelle Gilchrist said the organisation handed out 50-60 packs a week to those in need. It lets supporters know each month what it needs via Facebook.

Federal Member for Petrie and the Assistant Minister for Community Housing, Homelessness and Community Services Luke Howarth said the girls contacted his office asking for assistance in the form of prizes for a raffle.

He was happy to help.

Young leaders step up STORY KYLIE KNIGHT THREE students from Deception Bay State High School will use what they have learnt at the Beyond the Broncos Leadership Camp to inspire the next generation to reach their potential.

Shakira Lawton, Breeanna Norman and Marissa Kissier attended the four-day camp during the second week of the school holidays at the University of Queensland St Lucia campus.

They were among 50 chosen from schools across the greater Brisbane area, after they displayed good school attendance, behaviour, and grades and presented a strong case for their inclusion.

They heard from mentors

such as Aunty Sandra Phillips, Karal Hume, Taneshia Aitkinson, Aunty Pamela, Kellie Lazarus and Aunty Ruth Hegarty.

It was an extension of the Beyond the Broncos program, which enlists current and former Broncos stars to provide one-on-one mentoring in eight high schools, including Deception Bay State High School.

Have confidence in yourself “We listened to a lot of individual stories from when they were young to now and how they went through life,” Shakira said.

“I have learnt you have to get out of your comfort zone. It was really hard,”

Marissa said.

“Don’t be afraid to be yourself. Show your colour and just be you. Your story is unique,” Breanna said.

Team and trust-building activities have also given them new skills they are keen to share with other students at school.

THE St Benedict’s College (SBC) rugby league first team exceeded many expectations by winning the Matt Gillett Cup division three during the school holidays.

They faced a number of traditional league colleges including Padua, Iona, Mt Maria Mitchelton and Unity and played with courage and determination.

Festival of fun for kids STORY KYLIE KNIGHT FAMILIES jumped at the chance to get outside and enjoy activities, stage shows, rides and more at Moreton Kids Festival on October 18.

It attracted a crowd of about 7500 people and was the region’s first COVID-Safe event of this size.

Moreton Bay Region Industry & Tourism (MBRIT) CEO Shane Newcombe said it was wonderful to see so many families enjoying the event at Strathpine’s Pine Rivers Park.

“This year, as we all know, looks very different to any year with the events industry adjusting to and navigating through

the new normal. With extra cleaners on site, lines marked on the grass to facilitate social distancing and ample hand wash and hand sanitising stations throughout the park it was great to see families out and about in our region and having fun again,” Mr Newcombe said.

“There was a perfect mix of family fun for all ages with the very popular unlimited free rides in the Brisbane Kids Fun Kids zone returning, plus five worlds of fun that had something to spark the curiosity of every little mind and a full day of entertainment on the Strathpine Centre Main Stage.”

Winning race to deliver funds STORY KYLIE KNIGHT ORGANISERS of this year’s Jetty 2 Jetty Fun Run have donated $8580 to Chameleon Youth Housing, which is welcome news to the charity that has been stretched to the limit during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Manager Carmel Riethmuller said the organisation had expanded its services and been forced to be creative as a result of the pandemic and subsequent spike in demand.

It has also delivered outside of its usual services, including placing vulnerable people in motels.

Ms Riethmuller said the money raised by Jetty 2 Jetty had come at the right time because the organisation had exhausted its resources.

While it has had philanthropic support, “demand is ramping up and I’ve been worried about what we’re going to do”.

“There’s huge gaps and these gaps aren’t being filled,” she said.

“We’re jumping in and filling those gaps on a daily basis.

“In my 35 years as a social worker, I’ve never wit-

nessed so much demand and impact on mental health and increase in domestic violence.

“I’m so grateful for this and to the Moreton Bay Roadrunners and MBRIT. Without them we would … I don’t know how we’d keep going.”

AVID anglers are gearing up for the Redcliffe Sportfish Challenge.

Hosted by the Redcliffe Peninsula Game and Sportfish Club, the challenge offers a swag of prizes for competitors, including $200 in cash for the winner of the mystery length category.

Club secretary Greg Evans said the competition catered to all levels of expertise.

“Special emphasis is placed on the social side of fishing, and encouraging juniors to experience the wonders that the sea has to offer, with a heavy focus on the conservation of our marine life and responsible use of the resources that we have on our doorstep,” Mr Evans said.

He said anglers were encouraged to tag and release the fish they caught, but could also keep them to eat.

Mr Evans said the club, based at the Moreton Bay Boat Club and was community focused.

“As the official Fishing Section of the MBBC, we

visit rpgsc.com.au are heavily involved in promoting both competitive and family-based fishing activities in the Moreton Bay Region.

“Our monthly club weekends usually revolve around a barbecue at the boat club on the Sunday afternoon, with members having been fishing throughout the weekend either in their boats or land-based.”

Mr Evans said some club weekend events were held at one of the dams close to the area, or Bribie and Moreton Islands.

“Other weekends feature game fishing, where members that don’t own boats team up with boat owners to chase that elusive marlin or tuna, or maybe a feed of reef fish,” he said.

There will be prizes for the best male, female and junior in each category.

In the beach challenge, fish must be caught from a land-based position such as a wharf, jetty, beach or

bank, with the winner determined by the combined total length of an entrant’s five best fish.

Entries for the bay challenge must be caught in any of the bays, estuaries, canals, lakes and rivers, while the Bluewater challenge is for fish caught offshore.

Anglers can fish in all waters between Double Island Point to the NSW border, including dams and rivers, but excluding privately owned water.

The 2020 Sportfish Challenge starts with a meet and greet at 6pm on November 13 at Moreton Bay Boat Club, with fishing from midnight November 14- 3.30pm on November 15.

Creating hope for the future STORY JODIE POWELL KYLIE-LEE Bradford’s childhood growing up in Patonga in Kakadu has inspired a business that is growing to give back to her community.

Kakadu Tiny Tots started five years ago, creating childrenswear adorned with Indigenous designs

created by Kakadu artists.

“My mum was the main idea – she’s a traditional owner in Kakadu, and a huge inspiration behind what I do,” Ms Bradford said.

She decided to create her own range of childrenswear showcasing Indigenous designs after discovering there was nothing

There are eight beers on tap, one cocktail (espresso martini) and one wine (Squealing Pig sauvignon blanc). There is also a fully-stocked bar.

The taps will be cleaned in line with COVID-19 regulations and a staff member

will be there to help patrons and ensure there is responsible service of alcohol.

“We’re bringing the bar tender from behind the bar so they can interact with customers and tell them the stories of the beers,” Alyce says.

Capacity is capped at 60, due to COVID-19 restrictions, so patrons are urged to book via the venue’s

website to ensure they can get a seat. Walk-ins will be permitted, but limited, and not guaranteed.

The venue will offer DJ and live entertainment on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

I want to turn the current company into a social enterprise, to create eco gardens in Kakadu,” she said.

“When you live where I lived, there was no fresh fruit or vegetables, they were really, really difficult to find. We do have our bush foods, but things like apples and bananas are not available.

“I want to create gardens, where kids can grow and

enjoy their foods.”

Ms Bradford hopes the next iteration of Kakadu Tiny Tots will provide funding to break the cycle of poverty and connect future generations of Indigenous young people with their culture.

“I was very lucky, I grew up with a lot of culture and heritage,” she said. “(But) It’s normality to live in poverty in communities and that’s really sad. I want to create some positive changes for the kids. Our kids learn so young and they can make healthy choices from an early age.”

REDCLIFFE Musical Theatre is about to celebrate 10 years of giving local talent the chance to shine in big-name shows, and theatre-lovers the chance to see them at a local venue.

It will mark the milestone in the only way it knows how – on the big stage with a show, called Return of Music of the Night.

It is on at Theatre 102 on November 13 and 14 and Redcliffe Entertainment Centre on November 18 and 19.

of positivity and hope on what we have achieved and rekindle a love of the performing arts in our community.

“The audience can expect to see a show full of love, laughter and memories and hear some amazing voices and share in our journey so far.”

Highlights from the past decade include RMT’s first production The Sound of Music; Mary Poppins; Phantom of the Opera; The Queensland community premiere of Wicked; world community premiere of Saturday Night Fever; and The Wizard of Oz.

The group has staged 23 major musicals in 10 years.

“Each of these musicals offers the opportunity to our community to join us onstage at the Redcliffe Entertainment Centre either as a performer, musician, backstage, front of house or in a production role,” Ms Johns said.

“Usually these major musicals will incorporate a team upwards of 100 non-professionals and so we are keeping true to the values and goals that we aspired to when setting up the company to provide opportunities to our community – and in particular to our youth

– to experience theatre firsthand in a professional theatre.

For those disappointed by the sudden end to RMT’s production of Mamma Mia, due to the COVID-19 shutdown, the cast and crew are preparing to complete the season in January 2021. There will be six shows at Redcliffe Entertainment Centre from January 21-24.

Next year, RMT is also planning the Queensland community premiere of Jersey Boys and hopefully Priscilla.

“We are also bringing Moana Jnr to the Redcliffe Entertainment Centre in February 2021 as well as looking to tour to NZ in 2021,” Ms Johns said.

The event, from 8am-2pm, is also a chance to take in displays and buy members’ handiwork as well as surplus tools, equipment,

Vice-president Kerry Cameron said it would be the club’s main fundraiser for the year.

“We would normally have our annual competition at the Redcliffe Show, but this year because of COVID we’re judging the competition on November 12 and the entries and winners will be on display at the Open Day,” Mr Cameron said.

“I think people will be interested in what variety is available in the area and see the quality of the work on display.

Coming up to Christmas, there will be great gifts available to purchase.”

Visitors can also buy tickets to the club’s annual raffle.

First prize is a Camphor Laurel coffee table, second prize is a Norfolk Pine platter and third prize is a tea box. Tickets are $2 and the raffle will be drawn on December 8. The prizes and other pieces made by members are on display at Red Poppy Art, Redcliffe Pde.

Redcliffe and District Woodcraft Society, started by Bob Ennis and Peter Morphett in 1992, has more than 100 members.

There is action five days a week at its workshop at 463 Oxley Ave, Redcliffe, with Tuesday the day when all disciplines are at work.

Members also stop for morning tea and a chat on Tuesdays.

Mr Cameron said new members are welcome.

“It’s good for likeminded people to develop a hobby in their retirement or even before retirement,” he said. “There are so many disciplines.”

Billy makes his radical comeback STORY DAN NEBE

WOODY Point artist Billy Rad, aka Billy Simpson, has bounced out of COVID-19 with a beautiful folk/pop ballad titled, We Were Like Wolves.

The frontman from The Gastons, has embarked on a solo project that will not disappoint his fans.

“I wanted to help out on the R4TH Album, however. I still wasn’t ready to get The Gastons back together just yet. I decided to record this solo project and many of my friends encouraged me, so I thought now is the time,” Simpson explained.

Recorded at Star Audio in Clontarf and mixed by renowned engineer, Russell Pilling in Sydney, We Were Like Wolves is powerful and full of catchy hooks.

“I did not want to take any chances on this project, so I enlisted some cool people to work with. BJ from Star Audio is amazing,” Simpson said.

“We spent three days tracking the song in the studio before it

went to Sydney. I just cannot believe the quality of the production. It’s amazing to work with these guys.”

The project moves forward as pre-production continues for a music video being filmed in Moreton Bay in late October.

“It has an out-of-bounds love theme running throughout the video,” Simpson said.

“I will be playing four characters in the video. We are shooting it around Redcliffe, so that makes it special to me. My hometown.”

There’s plenty to love about what is happening in our original music scene right now.

So many artists are releasing so much new material. We are in good hands. I quite like what Billy has done with this track.

It is very subtle with an earthy grunge rock feel.

I have watched Billy mature as an artist over the past 10 years, with some awesome performances along the way. I have to say this is his best work yet, in my opinion.

inside STORY KYLIE KNIGHT INDOOR plants are the perfect way to make your home office, living room, bathroom or bedroom more inviting and they can even help purify the air around you.

But for some of us, keeping them looking as good or better than they did the day we bought them can be a challenge.

The experts at Redcliffe Garden Centre say it is easy if you remember a few key points.

Sondra Grainger said a surge in the number of people working from home or setting up a home office had prompted many to ask how they could create a healthier and more inviting indoor environment.

She said greening up the space, with indoor plants, will assist in purifying the air, absorbing chemicals and filtering common volatile compounds.

Ms Grainger has come up with a list of low-maintenace plant options that thrive inside.

Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum): This evergreen plant produces

stunning unique-shaped flowers, but it is not just a pretty face. A NASA study on indoor plants found the species also purified the air indoors along with Devil’s Ivy, Chinese Evergreen, Bamboo Palm and many others.

Zanzibar Gem: This little gem is perfect for those likely to forget to water their plants.

This glossy green plant features stunning upright foliage and is almost impossible to kill. Just remember to avoid direct sun and water sparingly.

Pothos or Devil’s Ivy: This plant produces heart-shaped leaves on long vines, which can hang from the top of a bookcase, filing cabinet or shelf. They are available in variegated green and white, green and yellow and golden shades. They are happy in low light and require little fuss.

Chinese Evergreen: This is a bold, lush and leafy plant with a tropical vibe, which loves low light and will even perform well under fluorescent lights. Give it a spritz of water across its leaves plus a weekly drink, and you may be rewarded with a flush of spring flowers.

Lucky Bamboo: It promises to bring you good fortune, and all it needs is a container of clean water and indirect light.

It features bright green upright stems and soft, thin leaves.

Redcliffe Garden Centre horticulturalist Tylor Elmsly’s top tip for indoor plant success is to avoid overwatering and killing your plants with kindness.

The amount of water needed will depend on the size of the plant, the species, where it is positioned and the time of year.

The easiest way to determine if they need a drink, is to stick your finger in the soil. If it is not damp, then it is a good idea to give the plant a drink.

You could also use a moisture gauge to be sure. Peace Lilies need frequent watering, but Zanzibar Gems do not.

Light is also a key consideration, so it is important to make the

most of window and lighter areas of the room.

“You have to choose the right plant for your space,” Mr Elmsly said. One trick is to rotate plants around the house or between an indoor and shaded outdoor area.

Plants also need food, so regular fertilising is important. You can use a concentrate in water and apply when watering your plants, or you can opt for slow-release pellets twice a year.

These are not a great idea if you have pets or small children who are likely to eat them.

If your plants are dropping leaves, they are not getting enough water.

If the tips of the leaves are burnt, it means the plant is too close to the window. Glass will magnify sunshine and heat.

Other key tips include ensuring your plants have good drainage and pests are managed well.

TIPS FOR SUCCESS Watering: Do not overwater your plants. Check the soil is dry before giving them a drink and allocate a regular watering day, so you can keep track.

Light: Choose the right plant for your space. Some areas of the house are lighter than others and most plants need light to thrive.

Drainage: Place plastic pots inside decorative cover pots, water plants in the bath and allow them to drain before putting them back on display.

Pests: Avoid overwatering and the dreaded fungus gnat, and apply white oil to leaves to ward off scale and mealy bug.

Hooked On Fishing and Boating Jew and Snapper. This is the time of year that all three can be targeted inside the river mouth.

A session at the mouth of Brisbane starts with castnetting for live bait. After putting a few live herring, mullet or prawns into the live bait tank I head for the edges of the river using the electric motor to hold me where the shallow banks meet the 15m lines. I make sure I stay the regulated distance from the port structure.

For Threadfin and Jew, the gear I use is a medium-weight Okuma LRF rod paired with an Okuma Epixor 40. The Epixor is spooled with 12lb braid down to a 1m, 40lb trace. I use a size 10ball sinker above the trace and a single size 6/0 live bait hook will hold the live bait.

This rig is dropped directly down under the tinny. When I feel the ball sinker hit the bottom, I retrieve my line 1.5m, leaving the live bait about 0.5m from the bottom. The drag setting is critical. It needs to be set very light, so the target

There have been reports of a few small mackerel schooling up and being caught just east of North Reef, Scarborough.

The heat and increasing humidity have enticed one or two Mangrove Jacks out from winter hibernation, they are becoming a little more active.

Flathead are in full swing and the Summer Whiting numbers are on the increase.

The incredibly busy mouth of the Brisbane River that gives access to Moreton Bay and the shipping channel has always been a popular fishing location.

My favourite targets between the mouth and the Gateway Bridge are Threadfin Salmon,

species can make its initial run without knowing you’re watching. When the target species stops, you will need to adjust your spool back to a normal drag setting. On the second run, you set the hook and it’s game on.

The Snapper gear is the same as above, but the rig is different as is the method of fishing for them. The rig is a simple one, 12lb braid to a 20lb leader with no weight at all. The method is called float lining and is also very simple. Use your electric motor to spot lock, up current from structure, drop the live bait in, release line from your spool and allow it to swim down with the current towards the structure. Snapper can be active anywhere in the water column, so be ready for the take.

MORETON Bay is home to several venomous and poisonous fish, but venomous and poisonous animals are different.

To be classified as venomous, an animal must not only secrete a toxin from specialised secretory glands or cells, but also possess some form of specialised delivery apparatus (venom apparatus). In the environment, venoms and venom apparatus can be used in offence (to capture prey) and in defence (prevent being prey).

One of the best-known groups of venomous fishes is the Family Scorpaenidae which includes the estuarine stonefish (Synanceia horrida).

Stonefish are recognised as the most dangerous venomous fish in the world causing intense pain, respiratory weakness, and damage to the cardiovascular system sufficient to cause cardiac arrest in some people. Deaths have occurred, although fortunately, very rarely.

Other common scorpaenid fish in Moreton Bay region are the fortesque, a tiny fish common in seagrass beds and the bullrout or freshwater stonefish which has been described as “spectacularly painful” by those unlucky enough to be envenomated.

Most members of the family are slow-moving, bottomdwelling ambush predators that have venomous spines for defence. The estuarine stonefish occurs in a number of different habitats including seagrass beds, bare sedimentary environments, reefs and man-made structures (e.g. rock walls). Don’t fall into the trap of thinking they only hang around rocky areas. I have even encountered one alive and kicking washed up on the surf beach of North Stradbroke Island.

The venom apparatus of the stonefish consists of 13 dorsal spines, three anal spines, and two pelvic spines and their

DR DAZZA associated venom glands and sheaths. The venom glands are bulbous structures situated around each spine. The upper part of the venom gland is elongated to form a venom duct which runs along the spine and opens at the tip.

Stonefish can survive for up to 24 hours out of the water.

If they get stranded out of the water on a tidal flat, they simply make themselves comfortable and wait for the tide to come in. Many stonefish envenomations result from stepping on the dorsal spines of the unseen animal, or by handling the animal to remove it from the hook or from a net.

They take bait or lures and even stray into the occasional crab pot. They are not a good sportfish…….

Under no circumstances should a stonefish be deliberately handled.

An envenomation is accompanied by excruciating local pain and rapid swelling of an envenomated limb that peaks around 60 to 90 minutes after the incident and can persist for up to 12 hours if untreated. The severity of pain may lead to unconsciousness.

Treatment is by the immersion of the wound in hot water as the heat inactivates the venom, adequate pain relief and the use of broad-spectrum antibiotics to prevent secondary infections.

Take care out in the water this summer and seek medical treatment for any serious fish envenomations!

Winning race to Bribie DOZENS of yachts raced along the region’s coastline when Queensland Cruising Yacht Club (QCYC) turned the clock back by relaunching a two-day event for the Bribie Cup. Last month, yachts raced from

the mouth of the Brisbane River to Bribie, moored overnight in Scarborough for an evening at Moreton Bay Coat Club and then back to the Brisbane River.

Dolphins legend Col Weier passes the ball in the 1965 Grand Final, which his side won.

STORY KYLIE KNIGHT HARD work, determination and a love of rugby league drove Col Weier to play more than 150 first grade games for the Redcliffe Dolphins – the first player to achieve that milestone.

Tributes are flowing for the club legend, Dolphin #8, who died on September 7 at the age of 85.

His wife of 60 years, Anne, said while he had suffered Alzheimer’s for many years, his death still came as a shock to his family including three children – Bernard, Duncan and Anita - seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Anne and Col met at the football, when he played in the Gympie competition for Kilkivan in 1957.

They married two years later and moved to Redcliffe in 1960, when Tosser Turner convinced Col to play for Redcliffe. Turner had married the girl who lived next door to Col and they knew each other well.

He also recognised a good player, when he saw one.

Col went on to play 157 first grade games for the Dolphins, and Mrs Weier said he only missed two games during that time.

He was Dolphins Player of the Year in 1960; Dolphins Best and Fairest in 1961, 1962, 1965; played in the Dolphins’ first premiership side in 1965; and represented Brisbane in 1961 and 1962.

Col was the first player to play 100 first grade games for the Dolphins and reached this goal playing 109 out of possible 111 matches from 1960-1964.

Dolphins Chairman Bob Jones said he was also the first to play 150 games and was renowned for his durability and work ethic.

“I never saw him play, it was before my time, but his legacy was well-established before then. He was a true legend of our club,” Mr Jones said.

“He was a copybook defender. His legacy for me at the club was about that

durability. He played those 150 games straight. He was a terrific competitor and all the things that are the cornerstone of our club today.

“He was quietly spoken and a very humble human being.”

Mrs Weier remembers enjoying ice cream sundaes and cups of tea with Col after games in Kilkivan.

True legend of our club When the Dolphins won the premiership in 1965, he was nominated as one of the best three players in the semi-final and Grand Final teams.

“That was in the old game. He loved the game then,” she said.

“They were like country people back in those days … the whole club. The people welcomed us here.”

played first grade for the club, making them only the sixth father and son combination to play first grade for the Dolphins.

Col was named in the Dolphins team of the decade from 1957-1966 and in the Greatest Ever Dolphins side in 2007.

In 1967, Col was badly burnt trying to help a neighbour light a barbecue and it was thought he would never play again.

But with the help of a “good masseuse” who treated him with saunas and massage, Mrs Weier said he was able to play and coach the Kilkivan side when the family returned to the area in 1968.

They moved back to the peninsula in the late 1970s and he worked as a plant operator for Redcliffe City Council from 1978.

As one of 15 children, family was important to Col and it is his family who will carry on his legacy for generations to come.

Raiders so close MORETON Bay Raiders were pipped in the final minutes of their Rugby League Brisbane Under 14 Division 1 semi-final earlier this month.

The boys were level 20-20 against Logan with 11 minutes remaining, but Logan managed one more try and went through to the final 26-20.

Despite having one of the smaller packs in the competition, Raiders put up gallant defence and were commended for their e f forts.

STORY NICK CROCKFORD REDCLIFFE Padres launched their new baseball season earlier this month with a Greater Brisbane League (GBL) first.

With so major young players qualifying for seniors, Padres became the first club to enter two teams in GBL Division One. The sides met in round one. It was a close affair between the veteran Red

side and development Grey team, with the lead changing hands throughout.

In the end, back-to-back homeruns by Wade Dutton and Carter Bell sealed victory for the Reds, though Joel Hogan was particularly impressive on the mound for the Grey side.

The special evening was capped by life members, Keith Land and Keith Sharpe, acting as honorary coaches for the opposing teams.

THE Lakes’ foundation women’s football team won its first premiership on Sunday – and did it in style.

The City 4 side beat second-placed Brisbane North 5-0, with goals from Jade Delamere-Clarkson 2, Andrea Hughes 2 and Maria Steele 1.

Victory moved The Lakes seven points clear at the

top with just two games remaining.

Sunday’s match was in doubt after the torrential rain, but the officials finally gave it the green light just 20 minutes from the scheduled kick-off.

The Lakes is the only one of 66 women’s teams in the Brisbane City competitions to still have a 100 per cent record this year.

“We have had an unbelievable season so far winning

12 from 12 and securing the league,” said Kellyann Mclean, who started the side five years ago.

“This team has been so close in the last three years to winning so we knew finally this was our year,” she said.

“We’ve had huge growth in female players across the club in the last five years as we’ve worked really hard to promote their inclusion.”

Making waves in nailbiting Grand Final REDCLIFFE Leagues Netball Association’s grand finals were full of drama on Saturday – especially in Division D. Pacific Waves eventually beat Aria Lightening 31-27 but only after they tied in normal time and overtime. In the third overtime, Waves finally inched ahead. Pacific Rapids took out Division A, Aria Splash Division B and Wicked Wildcats Division C.

Annual meeting The annual meeting of Redcliffe Golf Club will be on November 26, 6.45pm at the clubhouse in Handsworth St, Clontarf. Nominations for positions are due by November 6.

“We’ve done a few meets here and there. This was the first time we have had swimmers at states for a long time, which was exciting. Now we’re hoping we can get more joining us.”

Drew returned to Redcliffe Leagues in 2018, just before Ken Wood died.

There was no longer a senior squad, only juniors, and the first rebuild began.

REDCLIFFE Leagues Softball has an amazing 27 players selected for Queensland squads and teams. Five club officials have also need named in the representative sides.

It is a remarkable tally for an association which usually has representative numbers in single figures.

All have been named ahead of next year’s national championships planned for April and the men’s titles in June/July.

DOLPHIN Stadium is to host part of the new threeweek Kappa Festival of Football.

A double-header of men’s and women’s matches will be held at the Kippa-Ring venue on Saturday, December 5.

Tickets were due to go on sale this week to see the NPL Queensland All-Stars Women face Brisbane Roar’s Westfield W-League side at 5pm and NPL Qld All-Stars Men take on Roar’s A-League side at 7pm.

Brisbane Roar CEO David Pourre said: “Our club is looking forward to the start of our pre-season campaign for the 2020/2021 season and this will be a great opportunity to play against some of the finest NPL Queensland players.”

FQ CEO Robert Cavallucci said: “We are looking forward to the Kappa Festival of Football becoming an annual highlight on the Australian footballing calendar and we thank Kappa, Football NSW and Brisbane Roar for backing the initiative.”

STORY NICK CROCKFORD PENINSULA Power have their first NPL Queensland title in sight - but are still refusing to look any further ahead than the next match.

Power went to the top of the NPL Qld ladder on Sunday after Daniel Clark’s 94th-minute winner against Brisbane Roar Youth - his third goal in the past three games.

It moved Power to top spot three points clear of Olympic, whose match was postponed, and six clear of defending Premiers Lions, with three matches remaining.

“It was a nervous time (against Roar),” admitted Power President Craig

Feuerriegel, “but the boys came up with the goods.

“Daniel started slowly, as he came up from Victoria and hadn’t played much, but he’s starting to really find his feet.

“We’re still only going to take it one match at a time and I think there could still be some more twists and turns in the season.

“Now, we’re at the top perhaps some of the other teams might start feeling the pressure (of having to chase).”

Power’s remaining matches are Brisbane Strikers away on Saturday, Capalaba away November 6, Lions at home November 14. Olympic have Sunshine Coast at home to be arranged, Lions away November 7 and Brisbane City home November 15.

Feuerriegel said Peninsula Power was also looking closely at restructure and expansion plans for the NPL Women’s competitions in 2021. Power won the 2017 Premiership and Grand Final but has not been in the competition since.

Football Queensland is

looking at offering more licences in an expanded competition for 2021.

“We are considering it,” Feuerriegel said. “We were successful last time we were in it and we have a girls’ academy up and running now.”

Football Queensland’s restructure for women’s football will see Junior Girls age groups change from U-13 and 15 to U-14 and 16.

The U-18 Girls will become and Under 23 competition and the number of senior women’s teams will rise from 11 to 16 for 2021.

In 2022 they will divide into two eight-team competitions NPL Women and FQPL Women with promotion and relegation between the two.

THE North Lakes U13s Pink Eels played in the U13 Emerald Divison 1 Grand Final against Wests Juniors at Yeronga earlier this month.

Unfortunately the top team all year, Wests Juniors, were just too good on the night defeating North Lakes 8.11-59 to 0.3-3.

The Pink Eels gave it their all and gave Wests their toughest game of year, the Club and coaching staff are very proud of their achievements and efforts this season finishing runners up and looking to another great season in 2021.

REDCLIFFE Leagues Swimming Club is starting to make big waves in the pool again – despite a year of rebuilding and renovations.

Two weeks before the states, Redcliffe was also second in its division at the Brisbane Short Course Championships with many top 10 finishers and Rylee, who joined the club when three months old, won five events.
