STORY KYLIE KNIGHT THERE IS not much that keeps Horace Clark out of the water at Suttons Beach, not even life-threatening jellyfish stings and encounters with stingrays. He swims along the coastline early most mornings, so friends had little trouble deciding where to celebrate his 80th birthday on November 19. They decorated the Suttons Beach rotunda and celebrated at the place he’s enjoyed since moving to Redcliffe in 1965. He averages 320-330 days

a year and is in the water by about 6am. “2017 was the first year I did the full 365 days. I didn’t miss one,” Mr Clark said. He has swum since he was a child, in the docks in Wales and in the Bristol Channel all-year round. Mr Clark’s first love was football, trialling with Aston Villa Football Club a couple of times as a teenager before a stint with Newport County and an offer to work and play with “the railways”. This led him to the Welsh Youth side and Welsh League teams and eventually Australia.

He came out after his team won the Welsh Cup final, playing for Bardon Latrobe Football Club, saving two penalties to win the Grand Final in 1965. The side backed it up with another win in 1966. During this time, he was invited to a party at Redcliffe and discovered how beautiful it was. There were seven years playing and living in Sydney, before he returned to Redcliffe and his beloved Suttons Beach in 1978. Throughout his playing career, Mr Clark also became a swim coach, work-

ing alongside Peter Diamond and Ken Wood, and playing a part in the careers of Janelle Elford, Rebecca Creedy, Melissa Gorman, Blake Cochrane, Jade Starr, Ethan Chan, Nick O’Regan and many others. Each day, Mr Clark swims all the strokes except butterfly, due to a shoulder injury, and does deep water running and other exercises to stay fit. “All the younger fellows down there, when they find out how old I am and how I look for my age, they say ‘I should do that’,” he said.

Bid to ease gridlock STORY NICK CROCKFORD AN extra lane is being added to Anzac Avenue, in each direction, through Kippa-Ring to ease congestion at one of the region’s worst bottlenecks. Construction is due to start this month on building a third lane both ways on the stretch from Klingner to Nathan roads. It is likely to finish midto-late 2021. The project will be completed by Winslow Constructors on behalf of Stockland as part of the Stockland Newport development. Hercules Road State School Principal Paul Pickering said the school had been consulted by the contractor, who had sought feedback. Mr Pickering said the school “welcomed any improvement to the congested road and supported the suggested work, recognising improvements in safety for the school community and in particular the children”. He also “recognises the level of inconvenience, over a relatively short period, was manageable for the long-term gain for improved road safety”. The project will involve: • Turning the two-lane sections into three lanes each way • Adding a third right-turn lane from Klingner Rd on to Anzac Ave • Moving the pedestrian crossing near Hercules Road State School and making the median strip waiting area larger • Losing some on-street parking to make way for the new pedestrian crossing • Installing new traffic signals at the intersection of Anzac Ave, Regency St and Mandin St plus a new pedestrian crossing • Moving the bus stops near Hercules Road State

Heartfelt note makes lollipop ladies smile STORY JODIE POWELL A LETTER penned by a Year 5 Mango Hill State School pupil moved crossing supervisor Andi Halliwell to tears of happiness. Ms Halliwell, who has worked on the school crossing since January, said she was touched by the letter, which praised her for “making people much happier”. “It was mind-blowing, because I was just being me – I have never been thanked for being me,” Ms Halliwell said. “I read two lines and started sniffing.’’ “Hello lollipop lady, I’m sure you know who I am because I walk across the crossing every day,” the letter began. “I may not be the brightest kid every day with my head hanging down or into my phone but you make me feel much better.” Ms Halliwell said she had “annoyed” her fellow crossing supervisors for about two years to join the

crew before a vacancy became available this year. “These ladies have been my mentors – I have been lucky enough to learn from them,” she said. “It’s a reflection on (crossing supervisors) Sam and Jill that little things like saying ‘good morning’ can change someone’s day.” Ms Halliwell said she would treasure the letter and it served as a reminder that her philosophy of making people smile made a real difference. “Although I have bad days, all it takes is for someone to say ‘have a nice day’ and already I know someone cares about me,” the letter read. “I also wanted to say it’s not just me who thinks you’re a great lollipop lady, everyone does, and I’m sure of it, so please keep doing what you’re doing because it makes people much happier.” The letter was signed “From the kid who walks across the crossing”. mantha Topping, who has worked in the role for three years, said it was a privilege to make a difference in the lives of pupils and their families, with pupils regularly showing off their art and talking about their day at school. “When we started, we were the only crossing ladies employed by the Department of Education because we were working on school grounds and not on the road,” Ms Topping said. “During COVID-19 it was

really difficult – the children of essential workers were so frightened, so we tried to reassure them. “Our kids were off school, but we had to come to work, so they sat in the carpark on camp chairs – the community and the school are really special.” Ms Halliwell said she now knew who the mystery letter writer was, having received a follow-up note a couple of weeks later. “She gave me another one on Wednesday – it gave

her a real buzz to walk away seeing my grin. She likes writing letters to thank people,” she said. “She’s just beautiful – she’s one that I have to make smile.”

Work starts on Griffin Sports Complex site

THE Moreton Bay Region is a step closer to becoming Queensland’s rugby league heartland, with the first sod turned at the $13.85 million Griffin Sports Complex this month. League legend Petero Civoniceva turned the first sod to start construction, with Mayor Peter Flannery, Cr Jodie Shipway (Div 4) and North Lakes Kangaroos president William Ingram. “It might not look like much now, but this 90ha site is set to transform into a sporting, recreational and environmentally-protected precinct for all to enjoy, from families to native flora and fauna,” Mayor Flannery said. “This start-of-the-art facility will support the growth of rugby league in Moreton Bay, complementing the recent $24 million upgrade to Dolphin Stadium and in turn a hopeful NRL licence.”

Mayor Flannery said the project was not only an investment in rugby league, but also an investment in jobs for the region, with more than 150 people to be employed during the construction phase. “I believe our region can become Queensland’s leading sports destination,” Mayor Flannery said. Councillor Jodie Shipway said the sod-turning was exciting for Griffin and North Lakes residents and the wider Moreton Bay community. “Building this facility is absolutely critical to take pressure off the Kinsellas Sports Complex, which is already at capacity with over 1500 football and rugby league players taking to the field each week,” Cr Shipway said. “This new precinct will be a fantastic facility for the North Lakes Kangaroos, who have been patiently

awaiting a new home to support their exploding membership base.” Cr Shipway said the complex would include two full-size fields and one halfsize field, a clubhouse, field lighting and irrigation, new access off Henry Rd and more than 150 carparking spaces. Petero Civoniceva said times had changed since he grew up in Redcliffe. “I’m blown away by the standard of facilities in Moreton Bay Region and the love that clubs are putting in to nurturing such a happy, family-oriented sports culture,” he said. North Lakes Kangaroos president William Ingram said: “We at North Lakes Kangaroos are excited to have a state-of-the-art football facility to call home, somewhere we can expand our young club into a place for all members of the community to enjoy”.

Policy set to deliver new clarity on process STORY JODIE POWELL A LANDMARK policy governing the role of councillors in development matters has been adopted by Moreton Bay Regional Council. The policy clearly sets out how councillors can interact with developers, lobbyists and submitters to ensure such interactions are conducted transparently and in the public interest. The policy provides a structured and consistent approach for councillors to conducting meetings and record-keeping.

We want to get that clarity The processes aim to reduce the risk of misconduct or perceived misconduct and enhance community confidence. Moreton Bay chief executive officer Greg Chemello told the November 12 meeting at which the policy was adopted that, to his knowledge, no other council in Queensland had adopted a similar policy. “But I think it is imperative that we have a policy that makes it clear for the (development) industry, for ourselves, for the community how interactions should occur,” Mr Chemello said. “There’s been a lot of legislative change in the last couple of years that has caused some consternation in some circles and I think

this policy is our attempt to collectively define this as clearly as we can.” Mr Chemello said council officers had discussed the formation of the policy with the development industry and he had spoken with the Queensland Office of the Independent Assessor about its creation. “There’s strong interest across Queensland in this policy,” he said. “I think it’s a very good document – I won’t pretend it’s perfect - you could expect that we could come back to this room at some point in time after months or years of experience and say we need to tweak it here and there. “But it does balance out as best we can (councillor) responsibilities to the community to convey their concerns and views and interests to staff and to developers, with what your responsibilities are under the Local Government Act.” Councillor Brooke Savige (Div 1) expressed concern about how to deal with residents or developers who approached councillors seeking clarification after decisions were made, but was assured the policy allowed councillors to continue to convey community or developer concerns. Mayor Peter Flannery congratulated Mr Chemello and council staff for developing the policy. “We want to get that clarity and engagement, with both developers and the community knowing where we stand.”

Change to stop confusion over name

Penning letters to Santa MANGO Hill Village is taking the ‘Lead’ by giving youngsters a special Christmas hotline to Santa. Danni Fowles, who moved to area 12 months ago, is setting up a Letters to Santa system at Lead Childcare on Kinsellas Rd West. Children at the centre will draw or write letters telling Santa what they would like for Christmas and post them in a silver mailbox. Danni, Santa’s special helper, will collect them, and ensure Santa responds to each. She will then take them back to Leads Childcare for staff to give to the children. “With everything going on around COVID, I

thought why not do something exciting for the kids and get them to write letters to Santa,” Danni said. “My granddaughter is 21 months now and knows about Christmas. She comes to Leads here at Mango Hill Village. “It has only been open five months, so it was a perfect opportunity to get this going.” Leads Childcare Mango Hill Village Centre Manager Yasmine Springall agreed. “It’s really exciting, that’s why we jumped on board,” Ms Springall said. “We’ll do all the ages. Some may be more of a picture, others will use writ-

ing skills. Once some of the other Leads (centres) hear about this, I think next year will be very busy.”

A DECEPTION Bay park that has had two names for more than three decades will now be known only by its original name of Lions Park. The park, bounded by Deception Bay Rd, Cross St and Webster Rd, had also been known as Peace Park, but how it came to bear two names is a mystery. Councillor Sandra Ruck (Div 5) told the November 12 Council meeting Lions Park should retain the name, with nearby Bonton Avenue Park to gain the official name of Peace Park. An officers’ report to Council said that in 1986 the Australian Nuclear Free Zones Secretariat wrote to Council, asking for a park to be named as Peace Park to commemorate the United Nations’ International Year of Peace and World Nuclear Free Zone Day. But an investigation failed to find any formal or informal record of the naming of a Peace Park in the region. The Peace Park sign will be removed from Lions Park and a new sign installed at Bonton Avenue Park.

Flood fix a step closer MORETON Bay Regional Council will invest almost $42 million in upgrading a road that brings the road network to a halt every time it floods. Youngs Crossing Rd at Joyner, where it crosses the North Pine River, will be upgraded to improve its flood immunity, safety and vehicle capacity. Mayor Peter Flannery said the Youngs Crossing Bridge, at a total cost of almost $50 million, would be one of the largest road infrastructure projects ever delivered by Council.

STORY KYLIE KNIGHT AS the school year draws to a close and roads get busier in the lead-up to Christmas, the Deception Bay Road Policing Unit is warning hoons they will get caught. It comes as police brace for a typically busy time of year, when the silly season truly kicks in and young drivers push their luck. Officer in charge Senior Sergeant Garth Peake said Scarborough and the Queens Beach area, Anzac Ave, and the Ted Smout Memorial Bridge were a few of the problem areas, but also back streets and carparks away from main roads. “It’s not acceptable. Someone is going to get hurt,” Sen-Sgt Peak said. “We’re doing fairly well compared to other areas, but we do have our recalcitrants. “These tend to be individuals rather than groups coming to this area at the

moment, but that could change overnight because they’re mobile. They text each other and say, ‘let’s go to Scarborough’, which they do from time to time.” Typical hooning behaviour includes drag racing, burnouts, speeding, and driving defective vehicles. “Every week, we get complaints of some description,” Sen-Sgt Peake said. “Everyone’s got a phone with a camera now. They (the hoons) do it at their own risk. We receive recorded images of people doing the wrong thing all the time. They think noone is watching.” Police are better positioned than ever to catch hoons, using five different devices in their vehicles and mobile speed cameras. Target areas include blackspots and places where public complaints have been made. Police Link manages all the complaints. It is im-

Sen-Sgt Peake said police could respond quickly to complaints and would be out in force in the lead-up to Christmas. “It’s about waking up the

SES units to rescue WHEN a recent hailstorm damaged more than 2000 homes at Springfield Lakes, the Ipswich State Emergency Service Unit called for help to make temporary repairs. It was a call the Moreton Bay Region SES Unit answered, with local volunteers spending thousands of hours laying tarpaulins or taping cracked rooftiles to offer interim protection. All eight groups of the unit, Arana Hills, Petrie, Murrumba Downs, Redcliffe, Caboolture, Deception Bay, Woodford and Bribie Island, were sent to the storm-lashed region where cricket ball-sized hailstones smashed tiles and solar panels. SES units from across South East Queensland were joined by volunteers from other parts of the state including Cairns, Mackay and Rockhampton, as well as counterparts from New South Wales and South Australia.

Festivities get green light AFTER a year of uncertainty and restrictions, it’s the news that families have been waiting for – Christmas in the Moreton Bay Region has been given the green light. Despite the cancellation of several smaller carol events, the region’s four signature Christmas Carols at Caboolture, North Lakes, Redcliffe and Pine Rivers will be going ahead thanks to Moreton Bay Region Industry & Tourism (MBRIT) and Moreton Bay Regional Council. Upgrade work begins STORY NICK CROCKFORD MACHINERY has arrived to start work on the Bruce Highway and New Settlement Rd/Deception Bay Rd interchange upgrade. The $163.3 million project, part of the 15-year $12.6 billion Bruce Highway Upgrade Program, is expected to support about 270 jobs and be completed in 2023. Queensland Transport and Main Roads DirectorGeneral Neil Scales said improving the interchange would make it quicker and safer for residents, visitors and businesses. “The existing two-lane bridge at Deception Bay Rd, over the highway, experiences heavy

congestion during peak periods,” Mr Scales said. “The interchange upgrade will improve traffic flow by replacing the existing bridge with two new, wider and longer bridges, plus longer and wider entry and exit ramps, and two upgraded, signalised intersections on Deception Bay Rd. “Metering signals will be installed at entry ramps to balance traffic demands with capacity as traffic enters the highway. New infrastructure for pedestrians and bike riders will also be included to safely cross the Bruce Highway and

connect better to local paths.” Federal Member for Petrie Luke Howarth said: “I’m pleased to see the State Government has finally begun construction on the Deception Bay Rd overpass, it’s long overdue and it will make a huge difference to locals who commute”. Federal Member for Longman Terry Young added: “We need to upgrade the

interchange so we can support the economy and productivity and get people home sooner and safer”. The upgrade is jointly funded by the Federal and State governments through an 80:20 funding arrangement. The Federal Government is contributing $130.64 million and the State Government $32.66 million. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for

Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Michael McCormack said: “Through this program, the Australian Government is investing massively to improve safety, flood resilience and capacity along the full length of the Bruce Highway between Brisbane and Cairns. “It is the largest infrastructure program in Queensland and is delivering many vital projects such as the congestion-busting, jobcreating New Settlement Rd/Deception Bay Rd interchange upgrade.”

Planning for coastal change A STRATEGY to help plan for the impacts of change on Moreton Bay Region’s coastal landscape is being developed in consultation with the community. The Coastal Hazard Adaptation Strategy (CHAS) is being prepared by Council through the QCoast2021 program, which was developed by the State Government with the Local Government Association of Queensland. As part of development of the CHAS, Council wants to hear community concerns and opinions about coastal hazards, including rising sea levels. Councillors approved a Stakeholder Engagement and Communication Plan for the CHAS at its

November 12 meeting. Residents have been invited to attend a series of information sessions and have their say. Information sessions will be at: Redcliffe Jetty, Redcliffe, Pde, on November 28 from noon-2pm; and the playground and barbecue on area, corner Dohles Rocks November 28, from 8-10am. and Korman roads, Griffin,

Briefs Aeromodellers lease The Sports Aeromodellers Association Moreton Bay has been granted a two-year lease at the Griffin Sports Complex. The association will be allowed to use the land until work begins on stage 2 of the Griffin Sports Complex. Once work begins, the association will relocate all its operations to a council-owned property at Uhlmann Rd, Burpengary. Reduce waste Businesses with fewer than 100 staff will gain free access to an online matchmaking tool for material resource exchanges. Moreton Bay Regional Council voted to introduce the Advisory System for Process Innovation and Resource Exchange (ASPIRE) over the next four years. The program, developed by CSIRO, is designed to promote business sustainability, divert waste from landfill and develop new collaborations. Guide Dog graduates make the grade STORY JODIE POWELL DECEPTION Bay’s Tyler Okamura has celebrated the official graduation of his Guide Dog Fletcher. Having undergone two years of extensive training, Fletcher joined 14 other four-legged graduates and their partners at a ceremony recognising their achievements. Mr Okamura is grateful his retired dog Hamish and Fletcher have become firm friends and said Fletcher had settled into his new role. “It’s worked out so well with Fletcher,” he said. “It’s been fantastic, just being able to get to and from work easily and knowing that I have the confidence to Deception Bay resident Tyler Okamura and his Guide Dog Fletcher joined 14 other dogs get out and about.” when they graduated from training recently. Diagnosed with a

condition called Alstrom syndrome, Mr Oakmura relies on Fletcher to help him navigate moving from place to place independently. “We travel together for work and fitness. Anywhere I want to go, I will go with Fletcher,” Mr Okamura said.

chief executive officer Michael Kightley said the annual graduation ceremony celebrated Queenslanders living with vision loss and blindness, and their incredible achievements to retain and regain the freedom, confidence and independence that most of us take for granted. “This year we will be recognising 34 Queenslanders who have completed training with a guide dog, an electronic travel aid, or a white cane,” Mr Kightley said. “These life-changing dogs have completed two years of extensive training to ensure they are the perfect partner and companion for someone living with vision loss or blindness.”

Mr Kightley said this year’s ceremony was particularly special as Guide Dogs Queensland marked 60 years of helping Queenslanders living with vision loss and blindness. “The incredible Queensland spirit of helping others is still so important to Guide Dogs today, with more than 90 percent of our funding coming from the community,” Mr Kightley said. “For every dollar coin put in a collection dog, every item of merchandise bought at a fundraising stall, and every donation made over the past 60 years – more and more Queenslanders have been given the gift of a Guide Dog to be by their side.”

Campaign to spearhead DV change THEY are a shield from the elements, now bus shelters across the region are being used to help protect the community against domestic violence through the Recognise and Reach Out awareness campaign. Mayor Peter Flannery launched the initiative last week with Centre Against Domestic Violence CEO Holly Brennan, and cochairs of the Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Council Kay McGrath and Bob Atkinson. “Recognise the signs and reach out for support; that’s the message we’re sending through the community during the global 16 Days of Activism against violence,” Mayor Flannery said. “We identified 48 high-traffic bus shelters in every corner of the Moreton Bay Region to place the message front of mind, reaching on average more than 75,000 people per month. The Recognise and Reach Out campaign will target

three key audiences – people experiencing abuse, bystanders and perpretrators – through four different designs that will also be placed in Council’s customer service centres, libraries, museums, galleries and community halls. “You’ll notice a QR code on the posters which takes you directly to a dedicated resource webpage for more information, including the different forms of abuse and where to get help in Moreton Bay,” Mayor Flannery said. “We hope that by shining a spotlight on this inexcusable abuse, we can help increase the number of people contacting local service organisations and police for support; for themselves or others. “Creating cultural change takes time, so this campaign will be the first of several initiatives over the next 12 months in Moreton Bay to raise awareness of domes-

lation of 13 red benches to encourage conversation within the community this year and a two-day regional visit from the Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Council in July. “All of us have an important role to play when it comes to stopping violence in our community, workplaces and homes,” Ms McGrath said. “When we visited the region back in July, we learnt about the excellent work

being done here by local organisations in the fight against domestic and family violence,” Mr Atkinson added. THE PENINSULA has had a taste of Hollywood in recent weeks, with a movie chronicling the lives of the Bee Gees due out next month and the producers of the Dwayne Johnson series Young Rock choosing Scarborough as a location for filming. The excitement comes as Redcliffe’s Bee Gees Way reopened this week, just in time for summer. Bee Gees Way was closed in October for a $244,000 upgrade of its audio, visual and lighting infrastructure. Mayor Peter Flannery said work included upgraded technology, new videos on the Bee Gees Way screen and new music. “We’ve included Night Fever….I challenge people to come down here and not dance,” Mayor Flannery said. Jessy Nengerman’s mum, Chantal Bunnik, posted on the North Lakes Community Facebook page on November 9 on behalf of her son, who outlined his fruitless search for work. “Hi my name is Jessy, I’m nearly 17 and I’ve been looking for a job for nearly two years ... unfortunately I just can’t seem to get one ... Mr Campbell said locals could embrace the giving season and help those who needed it most.

THE Superjesus frontwoman Sarah McLeod says providing a song for the Rockin’ 4 the Homeless album is a way to keep the event’s heart beating in between live gigs. The band, best known for hit singles Gravity, Secret Agent Man and Enough To Know, was booked to headline this year’s main concert which was cancelled due to COVID-19 after playing at last year’s gig. Instead the Rockin’ 4 the Homeless organisers are producing an album called R4TH 2020 Album, The Greatest Hitters. It features 30 tracks from headline acts and local artists who have supported the event from the beginning. These include Hoodoo Gurus, Salt and Steel, Team Utopia, Killtoys, The Gastons, Union Radio, Diana Anaid and many more. The Superjesus have offered up their song The Impossible, which was released as a stand-alone single in 2019. “I picked this one because it’s my favourite, maybe because it’s new but also because it’s got a good sto-

The track was inspired by conspiracy theories surrounding the 1969 moon landing, sparked by a “confessional video” McLeod saw online featuring director Stanley Kubrick. “In the video, he admits to filming the moon landing on the set of 2001 A Space Odessey. I don’t know if it’s real or not because it’s in the dark … I’m not saying I believe it, but I thought that’s so interesting … there’s a song in it,” she says. “It’s derived from that idea of a massive cover-up.” She said it was good to have a fun song, which had a story behind it on the album. It’s also a banger. “It was our way of trying to help and in the absence of being able to play live, we can generate funds to channel back into the homeless,” McLeod said.

“We met Dan Nebe, who drives this, through the Hoodoo Gurus at the Under the Southern Stars music festival (a few years ago). He explained the cause and what he was trying to do.” McLeod said she was inspired by Nebe’s passion for the cause and his high reputation in the industry gave her and the band the confidence to back it. It has been a tough year for the music industry and like most, The Superjesus have had gigs cancelled as a result of COVID-19. At the moment, McLeod is performing shows around Queensland as a solo artist showcasing a new-found skill. During the COVID-19 shutdown, she taught herself to play the piano and she has thrown herself into the deep end. “The best way to learn is to get in front of people. That’s how I learned the guitar … just learning on the job. You make mistakes but it’s the best way to get good quickly,” she explained She has two gigs left this year - Ipswich Civic Centre on November 26 and Toowoomba’s Bar Wunder on November 28.

REDCLIFFE Uniting Church will share its vision for an integrated service centre with the community this week, as it prepares to start construction in March. Reverend Paul Clark said it was a plan four years in the making, which he hoped would bring community service providers together in a welcoming space.

to access holistic care. “People might go to access one service but can be easily referred to other services,” he said. The two-storey centre, called Redcliffe Uniting Community Hub, will have 800sqm space for community services providers, session rooms for counselling, meeting spaces, a café and more. Much-loved community gardens and chickens will remain on the Richens

St site. Rev Clark said it would be a warm, welcoming space not a commercial, concrete structure. The plans will be unveiled on November 26. “We’ll share the $5 million vision. We’ve invited our neighbours and community service providers and counsellors - anyone working in the area who want to see what will be available,” he said. “We want to provide a

space where people think it’s great to be here – if they’re a client, staff member or member of the public.” He is looking forward to working with organisations across the peninsula including Encircle and The Breakfast Club of Redcliffe - easing the pressure and addressing mental health and domestic violence issues. The centre will also help people find a place where they feel they belong.

PLANNING has already started for the 2021 Lift The Lid Walk for Mental Health at North Lakes after the success of the first event earlier this month. About 50 people, some from as far away as Toowoomba and Kingaroy took part in the walk around Lake Eden on November 15. It was the first in a new series hosted by Australian Rotary Health (ARH) and Rotary District Clubs around the country. “Thank you to the community and sponsors for your support at our inaugural Lift the Lid Walk for Mental Health,” Kippa-Ring/North Lakes Rotary Club Event Manager Colleen Caruana said. “It was great to see everyone walking and talking and all monies raised go to Australian Rotary Health.” A second walk was at Bribie on Sunday and further events are planned for Mackay, Rockhampton, Woolloongabba and Cairns this year. Elders endorse council’s Reconciliation action plan THE Indigenous community of the Moreton Bay Region has welcomed Council’s move to implement a Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP), saying it is an important step forward in the reconciliation process. The region’s first RAP will identify opportunities and steps that Council can take towards better recognition and active celebration of Indigenous history and culture. MARGATE’S Paul Reis is a man on a mission. He’s planning a trek to Tasmania to raise money for Hummingbird House, Queensland’s only children’s hospice. As the fundraising general manager for Wesley Mission Queensland, he’s no stranger to helping organise events to raise money for the organisation’s 90 services state-wide, including Hummingbird House. While some were sidelined this year due to restrictions imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Mr Reis is already looking ahead to next year, with the five-day Tasmania trek top of his list, followed by one to Western Australia in May. Mr Reis will lead trekkers through the Tasmanian wilderness on the west coast and through the majesty of Cradle Mountain with the help of a team from Park Trek. “It’s really a privilege to do domestic travel, it’s been something we have wanted to do,” Mr Reis said. “I do have a lady who’s

It costs almost $5 million a year to run Hummingbird House as a free service, and while the eight-bed centre receives government funding, it relies on community support.

STORY KYLIE KNIGHT THE highlight for Simon Armstrong of his nine years at The Lakes College has not been the school’s impressive expansion, but the growth of its students and school culture. Mr Armstrong will say goodbye at a farewell assembly on November 27, before he takes up a new role at the University of Queensland’s Cromwell residential college. “I’ve been in education for 37 years and I’ve seen what happens with our students from Prep to Year 12, but I never see what happens after Year 12,” he explained. “This is my opportunity to make a difference to young adults. All my colleagues and principals from all schools … it will be really nice to see the fruits of our labour and to continue

to help shape, mould and support those students as they go through that really challenging stage of their lives when they’re at tertiary study and working out what they’re going to do for the rest of their lives.” When asked to identify a highlight from the past nine years, Mr Armstrong said there had been many but something stood out. “Every single time a Year 12 student leaves the school – it’s bittersweet. You work so hard with them and you want them to be amazing graduates and they all are. Probably the highlight when I reflect more, is when they come back,” he said. “There’s a graduate from three, four, five, six years ago who wants to share their story and has come back to thank you for the role you’ve played in

Students on sky-high mission STORY NICK CROCKFORD STUDENTS at Mueller College, Rothwell have almost finished their part of the first Sport Aircraft Association of Australia (SAAA) project for schools to build a two-seater plane. For the past six months, a Mueller College team of 17 students, from Years 10-12, has been working on the right wing of a Vans RV12 kit plane shipped over from Oregon. The framework of the wing is now complete and the flaperon skin is being put on. The entire wing is on scheduled to be finished this month. At the same time, the left wing is being built by Lyndale Secondary College, Victoria; the tail at Burnside State High School, Nambour and fuselage at Ashdale Secondary College, Perth.

When completed each section will be sent to Narromine, near Dubbo in NSW, to be assembled by the SAAA, which will then test, fly and sign-off on the plane. The RV12, worth about $120,000, will be at the SAAA fly-in event Ausfly, at Narromine in April, and then tour the four schools in the Youth Aircraft Build and Fly program. Students will receive some subsidised flight training, organised again by the SAAA, as they were part of the build team. Teacher-in-Charge of Aviation at Mueller College, Anthony Banks, said it was the first time such a schools program has been undertaken in Australia. It had already run in the US.

“The students have to follow exact plans, the process is highly regulated and they work very closely with mentors,” Mr Banks explained. He said a long-term goal would be to next build a tail section and ultimately a whole plane, which would be owned by the school and hangered in Redcliffe. But, it would have to be done outside the SAAAsupported program which has funded this year’s project. STORY KYLIE KNIGHT WHEN a mate was trapped under his car for more than six hours following a crash while travelling for work, Joe Hoolahan thought there had to be a better way to monitor staff working remotely. From that germ of an idea in 2011, came journey management company JESI whose software is now used in 16 countries. JESI is global, locationbased software that enables an organisation to control the risks associated with a mobile workforce operating remotely. The technology enables real-time responses and rapid communication to help reduce the number of accidents, injuries and delays involving workers. Mr Hoolahan said it was not about checking up on staff, but instead a tool to enhance workplace health and safety and meet duty of care obligations. “It does its work, when someone can’t check in,” he said. “A lot of people feel relief that someone knows where they are.” The software also enables businesses to understand their team’s work practices and is being used by the mining, construction and

The team, now with offices at Redcliffe, Townville and Perth, started building the software in 2012 and secured investment in North Queensland. It was launched in March 2014. They have recently secured $2.5 million in funding via the Series A Investment round with Future Now Capital Management. Before that, JESI was the first Queenslandbased start-up to attract investment from the Queensland Government’s Business Development Fund in 2015/16, with coinvestment from Future Now Capital Management. It has been operating in Redcliffe for about 12 months, but will expand from a team of eight to about 30 people in the coming months. Most will be based on the peninsula. The goal is to grow the business, build a solid team that can deliver the aspirational goals they have set and further develop the product. Mr Hoolahan is also keen to expand the offering for

major clients they already have and identify new opportunities. “There’s no better place to do this than Redcliffe,” he said. Mr Hoolahan said the location offered good access to markets and was the perfect compromise when juggling regional centres and Brisbane CBD. Like many CEO’s, he was concerned in February/ March when the COVID-19 shutdown started to take hold. “Our product was reliant on travel and no one was travelling,” he said. “But people are now working alone, remote, from home, split shifts – our product became even more relevant. We created another layer for organisations to take that duty of care to another level.” The past three months have been their best ever. “We’ve listened to customers and adapted to what our customers’ needs are, not what we need to do to make money. We turned that around really quickly,” Mr Hoolahan said. “In two weeks, we produced a suite of repositioned offerings, adding work-from-home and work-from-site. We went from travel to five different products.”

While the Redcliffe Pottery Group and the Redcliffe Arts Society both occupy space at the Old Fire Station Community Arts and Volunteer Hub, and share the gallery shop, they have never hosted a joint exhibition. Old Fire Station Gallery manager Judi Carroll said the groups were excited to share the gallery space, with pieces from the pottery group complementing works from the art society. “The Pottery group approached

New single is a killer STORY DAN NEBE REDCLIFFE band Killtoys have re-released their latest single, Real Thing, to rave reviews. The band have been working hard through COVID-19 to remain focused and creative. “We were in shock when we had to cancel all plans for 2020. It hit us hard. We decided to be creative and record a bunch of tracks,” singer/guitarist Mick Bristow said. “I’ve been working on a few local projects at the same time and it’s great to see the bands on the peninsula working towards the future. This may have shut down the industry for now, however it certainly hasn’t stopped the music.” Formally known as The Pretty Fingers, Killtoys have made the cut on the R4TH 2020 Album, The Greatest Hitters. WANT to imagine you have escaped to a tropical oasis every time you step out into your backyard? It is possible with some careful planning and the right plants. The Plant Shack’s Peter Popenko said shrubs, trees and tropical plants were usually in demand this time of year as potted colour eased back. But those wanting to create a tropical garden at home, using new plants, need to be patient as many of the varieties they might be looking for will not be in stock until late December through to May. This should give gardeners plenty of time to do what they need to do first – plan their gardens and prepare the soil. Mr Popenko said realistic

planning was key to the garden’s success, and creating shade was the first consideration. “Some people imagine having lush Madonna Lilies, but only have a full sun position to work with. You have to create shade,” he said. “You can do this using good, reliable trees but they could take 18 months to two years to grow. “You can also create shade by erecting some shade cloth that is horticulture-grade (50-80 per cent). It will take the edge off the sun and prevent burning.” Other options include planting low tropical gardens, which make good use of existing trees in the garden, or grouping palms so their fronds create a canopy as they grow. Structures such as pergolas and shade sails can also do the job. “Afternoon shade can make all the difference – 1-5pm in the

summer months can be really advantageous,” Mr Popenko said. There are some varieties of plants that can go in between spots in the garden such as Philodendron Xanadu and Lickety Split. It is important to select plants that can handle the environment you are creating. Most plants with large leaves, perform best in low light. If they are planted in the sun, the leaves may burn. Mr Popenko said some Elephant Ear varieties could handle more sun than other plants, but it was best to seek advice, if unsure. In the first year after a garden is planted, gardeners need to focus on fertilising and maintaining growth of the leaves which will also help them acclimatise. It is during this period that plants can be damaged the most by the sun, but plants will adapt after 12 months if helped

along the way. Old leaves will be replaced by new growth that can cope with the sun’s radiation. Fertilising is vital. Use Organic Xtra on younger plants and citrus food or Eco 88 on older ones. Mulch is also imperative to keep the soil moist. Mr Popenko said grouping plants reduced their exposure to the sun and allowed them to support each other in their growth – much like creating a forest effect. “Select plants that grow in this area. Look at gardens that are successful in the area between Brisbane and Rockhampton,” he said.

G’DAY folks, mid November has proved to be very productive both inside and outside the bay. Mackerel and Tuna haven’t turned up in big numbers yet, but that won’t be far away. I spoke to Mick from Big Cat Charters who knows the grounds inside and outside Moreton Bay like the back of his hand. Mick said, “The past few trips, we have had good weather and gone wide of Moreton Island with great results. Our clients managed good numbers of Snapper, a few good-sized cod and the Mahi-Mahi (Dolphin Fish) have put on a spectacular show for us. The Mahi-Mahi are there in good sizes and numbers. The Bay is on fire at the moment”. I checked in with Mark Templeton from Tackle Land Sandgate who said, “there is a great variety of fish under and around the Shorncliffe Pier at the moment and you never know what it will produce next. In the last few weeks, we have seen, Queenies, Snapper, Jewies, Mackies, Longtail and event Cobia. More commonly, we come across great numbers

of the bread and butter species like Bream, Whiting, Flathead and the humble Gar. Gar are definitely an easy target for the kids to chase, light gear, small float, pencil or bobby float, a number 12 Mustad Longshank hook and a tiny bit of worm or prawn will see your rod bend”. On the prawn front, I called a good friend Merv who makes cast nets. Merv said, “the prawns are off to a very slow start this year, we got a few kilos recently but they are few and far between. I expect they will become much easier to find early December through to May”. I’ve spent the past two months putting together a new canopy camper to make beach fishing more comfortable. I took it for its first run on the sand at Bribie Island last week and it went very well. I wet a line in the passage at Lighthouse Reach, a couple of kilometres south of the Ocean Beach cutting. My target was whiting using live worms for bait. I managed five bream, and a couple of grunter. Plans don’t always come together. That’s it for another fortnight, tight lines, and see you on the water.

IT’S a very crabby time of the year! The crab most caught by recreational fishers in Moreton Bay is the blue swimmer crab and these are abundant in Bramble and Deception Bays and off the Redcliffe peninsula. They can be caught all year in Moreton Bay, but are more active in the warmer months. The scientific name of the blue swimmer crab is Portunus armatus and it is found around most of Australia and New Caledonia. It has been a long-standing management arrangement that recreational and commercial fishers must only retain male crabs. The males are bright blue in colour with white spots, longer claws and a narrow abdomen. Females on the other hand are duller with shorter claws and a much wider abdomen. Female crabs are more abundant in shallow areas (particularly the tops of sandbanks) while male crabs prefer deeper water and the lower slopes of sandbanks. Tagging results showed that the movements of blue swimmer crabs within Moreton Bay were generally limited and random. Blue swimmer crab mating activity has two seasonal peaks – a major peak being in May/June and a minor peak in November. Female egg bearing crabs occur throughout the year, with the proportion of females bearing eggs being greatest between August and October. The granular egg mass is easy to see under the female crab’s abdomen. Prior to hatching, the female crab moves into shallow marine habitats to release her eggs.

DR DAZZA Juveniles recruit from the plankton into seagrass or tidal pools. Juvenile blue swimmer crabs are cannibalistic, and this behaviour is more frequent in the absence of appropriate shelter. Without healthy seagrass beds, the stock of blue swimmer crabs in Moreton Bay would most likely decline significantly. Blue swimmer crabs in Moreton Bay are prone to infection from the parasitic Sacculina barnacle called granifera and this may have impacts on their population. This is not the standard barnacle on the surface of the shell. The visual external symptom of an infected crab is a large mass of soft tissue under the abdomen that looks superficially like an egg mass of the crab, but on closer inspection no distinct eggs are present. Infection rates tend to be higher in more nearshore waters. The infection can prevent blue swimmer crabs from successfully reproducing. The prevalence of the infection has changed through time. Heat olive oil in a pan over high heat. Add mushrooms and garlic. Cook, stirring occasionally, until golden (2-4 minutes). Add wine and cook for 1-2 minutes, then add stock and cook until liquid has reduced by half (5-10 minutes). Stir through parsley and rosemary, season with salt and pepper and keep warm. Meanwhile, cook pasta in a large saucepan of salted boiling water, until al dente. Drain pasta and divide between bowls. Spoon over ragu and top with parmesan and fresh parsley. Serve immediately.

Boredom can be a thing of the past for seniors, with plenty of free or low-cost Moreton Bay Regional Council programs and activities to join in or attractions to visit, offering everything from seniors fitness and chair yoga to technology training and art exhibitions. The Council’s Healthy and Active Moreton program provides an avenue for residents to be more active, more often through an exciting range of fitness, recreation and sport activities and workshops. There are hundreds of activities, across the region, which appeal to all ages and abilities. A number of these are geared towards seniors. These include pilates, seniors group fitness, chair yoga, canoe adventures, gateball games and even Zumba. Bookings are required for all Healthy and Active Moreton activities. Mayor Peter Flannery said Council increased funding for the program by $100,000, in July, in a bid to get residents moving again after the COVID-19 shutdown. “If there’s one thing we learned from COVID-19 it’s the importance of staying active, not only for our fitness levels but our mental health,” Mayor Flannery said. “All of our providers are operating in accordance with State Government regulations for COVID-19 so you can rest assured that Council is committed to keeping the Moreton Bay Region safe. “The program caters for literally anyone and everyone - and the best

part is that all activities are free or low cost, which I know is important for all during tough times.” For those more interested in exploring their creative side, the council’s galleries, museums and libraries run regular events throughout the year. Until the end of December, Redcliffe Museum is running memory box sessions, which aim to stimulate memories of the past. Each box has objects thematically curated to various rooms of the home, and include delightful items from past eras ranging from a gas lamp to playing cards to pudding bowls. Enjoy a rummage and uncover items from your past. You can learn take part in a ‘weaving wonders’ workshop at Pine Rivers Heritage Museum on December 5 from 1-4pm, create a mixed media sculpture with artist Karl DeWaal at the same venue on December 12 from 1-4pm, and make Christmas lanterns at Redcliffe Museum on December 17 from 10.30-11.30am. The family business, owned by Ann, Terry and Kiesha Stehbens, has been making pre-prepared meals for about 16 years – starting with just a few and now offering 30-40 meal options each day including desserts, salads and fruits. Kiesha said customers loved the home-cooked style and that the meals were “no-fuss, normal food”. “They’re also a good price point as well and nutritious,” she said.

They’re everyday meals that people love Meals are delivered each Thursday to older people living on the Redcliffe peninsula, Sandgate, Shorncliffe, Brighton, Bracken Ridge, Mango Hill, Deception Bay, North Lakes and Murrumba Downs. Their delivery person, Carla Thomas is a favourite with customers who enjoy seeing her each week. Groceries can also be delivered to those who need that service too. Ann said customers loved the meals and some doctors at Redcliffe hospital told their patients about them, when they were being discharged. “They are plain meals, not fancy, but they’re the everyday meals that people love. They’re the meals we were brought up on as kids,” Terry added.

Some customers have travelled from Bribie Island, Dayboro and even Ipswich to buy meals in bulk and freeze them. “A lot of older people don’t know we do this, their carers can pick meals up for them,” Ann said. Some overseas-based family

Ann said a “back to basics” style of customer service had grown loyal clientele and enabled her family to employ local people. If they don’t stock an item, they will source it and they have changed their product line since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic to include more local brands. Customers are responding, with sales of Maleny Milk increasing from 1-2 crates a day to 9-10. “Since COVID, a lot of people who have never been here have come in. They want to buy local and our customer service here is amazing – all the girls up the front and Ann – we make them feel at home,” Kiesha said. Redcliffe Friendly Grocer offers catering for events, with a range of hot and cold platters and meals to choose from. Free training paves way All About Living is offering awardwinning free training for people who want to study for – and obtain - a Certificate III, Individual Support – Ageing. CEO David Worsnop said the program was aimed at mature-aged workers, parents or carers wanting to return to the workforce and people from cultural or linguistically diverse backgrounds. “We’re also aimed at people who want to change careers and work in a fast-growing, rewarding essential services industry.” Applicants must be Australian citizens or permanent residents aged over 16, and must hold a current driver’s licence. The training focuses on delivering services to aged people, or people with disabilities, who want to continue to live independently in the community. Trainees learn in All About Living’s Sandgate training centre for two to

three days each week, from 9am2.30pm during school terms. Mr Worsnop said the flexible training was designed to accommodate the availability of parents and carers. “Eligible applicants are able to join our study groups at any time,” he said. Off Market Sales Today I’m going to talk about off-market sales. I’ll aim to cover, what is an offmarket sale? How they work and are they a good idea? Off-market sales are sales that happen without a property ever being offered for sale to the broader market. They often happen when an Agent or even a private buyer contacts you and says they want to buy your property. Offmarket sales happen more regularly in strong sellers markets when available advertised stock for buyers is thin. As with all things there are advantages and disadvantages with off-market sales. The primary advantage is that you can skip the process of people looking at your home. However, convenience typically comes at a massive disadvantage. The disadvantage is typically born in the price you achieve. It’s amazing when I talk to people who have sold off-market how many have the view that they have done so well, only for me to shake my head privately knowing full-well that they have often lost tens of thousands of dollars in the process, maybe more. Why? Sellers markets move quickly. As prices move what your home was worth 3 or 6 months ago is not the same as what it would be worth in a competitive market today. The key word here is competitive.

Competition is what gets you the right sales price. If you only show your home to one or two potential buyers, how do you know what you are missing out on? In a big world the buyer prepared to pay the most is highly unlikely to be one of these. But does convenience off-set price? For some people it may, but in my mind I’d be asking myself, how long does it take to save $20k, $30k or even more? It can take years and years for most people. My view, if an Agent is chasing your property for a quick, easy off-market sale you have to question who they are working for? Agents that specialise in finding off-market sales for buyers are typically working as a quasi “Buyers Agent” and they should be getting their fee from the buyer. The Agents that truly care about you will foster good relationships with buyers who are “red-hot” but they WILL ALWAYS recommend that you market your home properly.

Red and white to the core STORY KYLIE KNIGHT DAWN Hill is happiest when she’s wearing red and white and selling doubles at a Dolphins home game. It’s something she’s relished for more than 40 years but her connection with the club, that has become her second home, goes back more than five decades. Selling raffle tickets on a Friday night for 20 cents, when the club was based at the Redcliffe Showgrounds, is where it began before she and a tireless crew of volunteers ran the canteen for about 10 years from 1967.

Dolphins News sat down with Dawn and her friend Lee Kleinschafer to reflect on their long-standing connection with the club shortly after the first State of Origin game, which heralded a return to selling doubles this year. COVID-19 has kept them both on the sidelines, with the Intrust Super Cup season cancelled and no Dolphins games to support. They have been side-byside for most of the past 50 plus years, sharing a love of the game, the club and its players. Their efforts and those who have worked with them over the years have

raised funds for the club, which it desperately needed in the early days. “Tosser Turner came to me the second year I took over the canteen and he said to me, “could you get it up to $1000 this year, Dawn?,” she recalls. “Every year for three years, Tosser would say to me, ‘could you make it another $1000?’.” Dawn said the final cheque she presented to the club when she hung up her canteen apron was for $26,000. It was at that point, she and members of the women’s committee started selling doubles – essentially a raffle where the

ticket-buyer receives two numbers. These numbers represent the first point scorers from either side. A group of the club’s female supporters decided they wanted to travel to cheer on their team, and so the women’s committee became the Dolphins Red and White Supporters Club. Since then, they have continued to raise money for the football club and earned a reputation for their passion. Dolphins CEO Tony Murphy said: “They are famous Queensland over as the girls in red and white, and are a wonderful organisation”. At their peak,

there was about 20 of them donned in red and white, who travelled to places such as Emerald, Rockhampton, Bundaberg, Cairns, Townsville and Mackay. There’s just six of them now - Dawn, Lee, Doreen Sloan, Noela Simpson, and Bev and Lisa West – but their passion remains. For Dawn, having this year’s season cancelled has been tough. She and the girls will have to temper their excitement when the 2021 season starts. “It might be too much for us to cope with. We’re looking forward to next year, we’ll have a bit to catch up on,” Lee said laughing.

CAMERON Smith, who grew up in Bray Park and learned to play golf at Wantima Country Club, Brendale, made history at the US Masters last week. The 27-year-old finished runner-up in arguably the most glamorous major golf tournament in the world, beaten only by the world number one Dustin Johnson. The former Pine Rivers State High School student had rounds of 67 68 69 69 for a total of 273, five behind winner Johnson and level with SJ Im of South Korea. On the US Masters website Smith says: “I’ll take 15-under here for the rest of my career. If I do that, I might win a couple of Masters.” Smith, who always goes to Wantima when back in Australia, has achieved the following: • The first player in US Masters history to card four rounds in the 60s • The lowest score ever by a US Masters runner-up • Only six players have ever beaten Smith’s fourround US Masters total. The “Outlaw” has a rematch with Justin “Iceman” Frost, who lost his championship belt and undefeated career record to Law at the same venue in September. On that memorable night Law, who lives in Caboolture, was given the

STORY NICK CROCKFORD WHEN Jill Adams joined Redcliffe Golf Club the clubhouse was ‘like a shed’ and Charlie Earp was the professional. Almost 60 years later the clubhouse has changed, Charlie Earp is a legend among golf coaches – and Jill is still supporting the club she loves. She has been a member of

Redcliffe Golf Club for 59 years and six months and recently attended her 59th annual meeting of the ladies’ section – having only missed one. “Jill is a superb role model and still takes a great interest in the women’s golf at Redcliffe Golf Club,” Ladies’ President Paula O’Reilly said. Jill, who turned 90 this year and no longer plays,

moved to the peninsula in 1961 and had her golf handicap down to 13 at one stage. She said winning the B Grade championship, caddying for state players and refereeing matches were the highlights of her career. The changes she has seen include watering the course, building the dam, rules making the game faster and course drainage which allowed gardens to

be built. “Several gardens were tended by the ladies, especially the late Ruby Postle and the late Daphne Faithful plus Shirley Dunn and her husband,” Jill said. Her favourite memories are “the friendships formed and great social functions held”. Paula O’Reilly said Jill held various roles on the ladies’ committee for 25

years and was an instigator of the Senior Qld Ladies competitions. “She was also a driving force behind the annual Dorothy Banks Charity Day,” Paula said. “This year the day raised $5000.” Jill was a special guest at Redcliffe’s final day celebration with Margie Johnsen, who played in the winning team and also turned 90 this year.

Trophies stacking in Power clubhouse PENINSULA Power has proved over two decades that success breeds success. Every major senior trophy in Brisbane and then Queensland has found its way to AJ Kelly Park, at an ever-increasing rate. But, by the end of this month, those achievements could be eclipsed by the Class of 2020! Two years after the club was founded in 2000 – from an amalgamation of Redcliffe City and Margate – Power landed the Brisbane League Division Two double. Ten years in the Brisbane Premier League have seen the Premiership 2009, three successive Grand Finals 2013-15, the Canale Cup 2013 and Brisbane Premier Cup 2008. In 2017 Power’s women lifted the state-level NPLW Premiership and in 2019 won the Brisbane Premier League Grand Final. Power’s men won the second tier Football Queensland Premier League (FQPL) at the first attempt in 2018 and have now added the top tier NPL Qld crown. So too the NPL QLD Under 13, Under 14 and Under 16 Boys’ Development Premierships, while Craig Feuerriegel the Under 16 Boys Development team was runners-up. That followed the successes of Redcliffe City winning Brisbane Division 5B in 1967 and Margate being Premiers of Brisbane Division 9B in 1994, Division 6 Premiers 1996 and Division Two Premiers 1997. Seven Peninsula Power players have been in the running for the now tradtional end-of-season NPL Qld All Star Men’s team to face Brisbane Roar at Dolphins Stadium on December 5. At the time of writing, Trent McEvoy, Cameron Crestani and Hayden Mchenery were in the 12-man pool of defenders with Daniel Cunha, Sam Roper and Tom Strickland on the midfield shortlist. Andrew Pengelly is the only Power forward bidding for a place, while coach Aaron Philp is one of the five initial selections to coach the team. The final All Star squad was due to be announced this week bringing together the top players selected from all NPL QLD teams from the 2020 season.

Four premierships and one runner up STORY NICK CROCKFORD PENINSULA Power could add another trophy to this season’s remarkable haul, on Sunday. Power will take on A-League Brisbane Roar at AJ Kelly Park, kick-off 5pm, in the annual Dolphin Community Shield fixture. Roar currently hold the shield and will be using the match as an important part of their preparations for the A-League season. Should Power lift the trophy they will add it to the four NPL Queensland Premierships already sitting in the club’s trophy cabinet. The chance of a Grand Final appearance slipped away on Saturday when Power lost 4-1 at home to Lions in the semi-final and had two players sent off. “It was disappointing,” said Power President Craig Feuerriegel, “the boys did the best they could but obviously it is hard against a team like Lions when you are a man down. “But this has still been a very, very successful season. One of our best. We are the Premiers of Queensland’s top competition.” Coach Aaron Philp paid tribute to his squad after Power’s final match of the regular season against Lions: “I’m extremely happy for the players”. “It has been a long season since last November, but they have worked really hard and deserve everything they have achieved.”

Last year, Power had 13 wins in their first 14 games but finished third. This season, they were nine points off top spot after seven rounds, but eight successive victories gave them the title by five points. “Last year, we had a lot of injuries. This season we’ve had good strength in depth,” Philp said. “There have been tough matches, but the players have stuck to the process.” Those include dramatic

winners after the 90th minute (Moreton Bay United 4-3, Brisbane Roar 3-2) and an equaliser (Gold Coast United 1-1) in injury time. “Sometimes it’s not how you start, but how you finish,” Philp said. Feuerriegel, who has been president since Power was formed in 2000, said: “The key has been consistency. To be premiers you need to consistently win games. We lost the first game (away at Easts) back

after COVID. There was a bit of soul searching and we recognised what was needed to be successful. “We started year aiming for the top four (in the NPL Qld). Then the top two. To meet those targets we needed consistency.” Recruitment has played a key role in Power’s success, with the likes of Danny Mchenery and Cameron Crestani bolstering the defence and Andrew Pengelly supplying crucial goals.

“We lost our top scorer when Dean Briggs went back to England and needed goals,” Feuerriegel said. “Andrew struggled a bit with injuries, but has been an excellent signing.” Pengelly played his first match on August 2 and finished with 13 goals in the last 14 games – despite not playing the full 90 minutes until his sixth outing. Power’s juniors also dominated in winning their Development Leagues. The

that time) has been the professionalism of the club,” Feuerriegel said. “It’s not easy to change from community players to top competitions and still be a club that welcomes players of all levels. But that’s what we want to keep doing - looking after all our teams. There’s a lot going on behind the scenes”.

PENINSULA Power is already preparing for new, bigger challenges – despite celebrations for their remarkable 2020 campaign being far from over. Last week Power was admitted to the NPL Qld women’s competition for 2021 – returning to the league it won in 2017. Power is also part of the Championship Partner Group working on plans to launch a national second tier competition to sit between the A-League and NPL. “Women’s football is massively important, especially with the World Cup coming here in 2023,” said Power President Craig Feuerriegel. “Interest in the women’s game is going to be at a very high level and we needed to provide a pathway for girls to the highest level. “The NPL said our application was very, very good and we have a number of announcements coming out about signings and coaching appointments.” Power was in the NPLW for three years, from 201517 before joining the Brisbane Women’s Premier League, winning the Grand

Final last year. Olympic, Brisbane City and Virginia will be joining Power in an expanded women’s NPL state league next season. Olympic and City currently play in Brisbane Capital League 1 and Virginia in Brisbane Women’s Premier League. However, 2022 may see Power step up again. It is one of 30 clubs across the country to sign-up for the Association of Australian Football Clubs’ (AAFC) proposed national second division. “Currently, we have been in contact with the consultant preparing a draft for the FFA (Football Federation Australia) about our set up,” said Feuerriegel. “It’s been positive and from what we are hearing it (league launch) may be 2022. There are a lot of things happening, but no confirmation, at the moment.” Feuerriegel said, after signing the formal agreement with AAFC, that Peninsula Power had “been on board with this from the start. Our mantra is always to strive to go forward. “We believe we can represent our community and the area at the highest level, as we showed when joining the NPL,” he said.
