GEOFF Harcourt believes running has a way of bringing people together, so he is doing his best to get them off the couch and down to the Redcliffe foreshore. The Physical Education (PE) teacher co-ordinates the Moreton Bay Road Runners Couch to 5km group, which meets every Thursday from 5.30pm at the Redcliffe Jetty. The goal is for partici-

pants to gradually work up to running 5km – improving their fitness and health. It’s a free program and another way the Moreton Bay Road Runners group supports the community. Mr Harcourt said bringing people together to run made it more fun but they also supported each other. “We can see a lot of people like running, but it’s one of those things we don’t want to do by ourselves,” he said. “We just want to have peo-

ple supporting each other.” Eight people from last year’s program have gone on to join Moreton Bay Road Runners, but Mr Harcourt said it was not a membership drive. “Sometimes it’s just nice to meet new people. It’s nice to run past people and say hi,” he said. Participants do not need to register — they can just turn up. About 20 people take part each week. “I’ve been running for

10 years. I volunteered at Bridge to Brisbane … I was at the end handing out T-shirts and said to myself, ‘if they can do it, I can do it’. Mandate to deliver key projects STORY KYLIE KNIGHT WORK will begin on a significant expansion of Redcliffe Hospital, major roads will be upgraded, school infrastructure added, police resources bolstered and a barge to Moreton Island returned during the next term of the Labor State Government. Dolphins News asked the returned Members of Parliament for Redcliffe, Bancroft and Murrumba what locals could expect of their government in the next four years. Deputy Premier, Health Minister and State Member for Murrumba Steven Miles, Attorney-General and State Member for Redcliffe Yvette D’Ath, and State Member for Bancroft Chris Whiting met us at Redcliffe Hospital, which will be transformed in the next term. For Mr Miles, his top priority was “getting to work on the hospital projects”. “We’ve got construction underway here at Redcliffe and a big project at Caboolture and plans for an even bigger expansion here at Redcliffe and then three new satellite hospitals for the region – one at Petrie,

which I’m really hoping we can do at The Mill site, one at Caboolture and one at Bribie,” he said. During the last term, the State Government invested more than $116 million in upgrading Redcliffe Hospital, with projects including: building a special care nursery and birth suite and improving paediatric care; constructing an additional operating theatre; building the multi-storey carpark; and buying and installing an MRI Machine and second CT scanner. Mr Miles said the business case planning process for the expansion would take 18 months to two years. “That’s about how long it took for Caboolture. We’ve got a lot of work to happen between now and then,” he said. Ms D’Ath said there would continue to be plenty happening in the meantime. “That’s including upgrading the emergency department, obviously the second CT has arrived. People were asking me during the election, ‘where’s the MRI?’. It’s been delivered, so that’s really exciting,” she said. Mr Miles said the community could expect to see construction “underway

Residents call for services hub STORY NICK CROCKFORD NORTH Lakes and Mango Hill should have an emergency services hub – not just a new fire station – according to the area’s leading residents’ organisation.

The “recommendation” has been made by Mango Hill Progress Association (MHPA) and comes after funding for a new fire station was approved last month. MHPA had lobbied for a North Lakes/Mango

in the next four years and probably continuing beyond that”. Ms D’Ath said the project would almost double the existing building and she looked forward to sharing final designs with the public, when the planning process was complete. Infrastructure is also the top priority for Mr Whiting. “The planning for Burpengary (East) State School and roads infrastructure the widening of Deception

Bay Road. We’ll start on the Deception Bay Road overpass, a new hall at Deception Bay State School and the artificial running track at Zammit Oval,” he said. Ms D’Ath is keen to see the Scarborough masterplan progress and lights installed at Dolphin Stadium. The expression of interest process for a barge to Moreton Island from the Redcliffe peninsula has closed. Ms D’Ath said there has been more than one ap-

plicant and she was looking foward to a briefing on the next steps and timeline. Other commitments the trio is excited about include extra police, mobile police beats arriving in 2021, school-based police support officers, school-based GPs and psychologists, and infrastructure for schools including $700,000 in fencing for Humpybong State School and $500,000 for outside school hours care facilities at North Lakes State College.

President Laurence Christie said a number had been identified. “In fact, we have recommended an emergency services hub in an area close to Discovery Drive,” he said. “This is, of course, dependent on the land being available.” The ‘identified’ site is in Joyner Circuit, behind Anzac Avenue. “We’d have to see exactly what the department needs”. “We’d have to make sure the police, the firies the ambos have exactly what they need. That’s the most important part.” On a location for the funding-approved new fire station he said: “I’ll leave that to the professionals. The firies have specific needs when it comes to where they want fire stations”. MHPA met with State Minister for Fire and Emer-

gency Services Craig Crawford in February to push its case for a new fire station. The campaign was initially told the population did not meet requirements for a new fire station. That has changed in the past two years. Mr Whiting told last month’s MHPA meeting funding had been approved. He said it would be operational within two-three years and the process now handled by government officers.

Remembrance Day a time to reflect STORY JODIE POWELL NEVILLE Cullen’s family had a long history of military service, so it was only natural that the then 17½-year-old would sign up for the Vietnam War in 1964. “My grandfather was a World War I veteran – he was mentioned in despatches and was promoted in the field (in Egypt) from Sergeant to Lieutenant. “Two days later, he was wounded with shrapnel that stayed in him until he died.” The Redcliffe RSL president’s father and mother both served in World War II, his father in the Armoured Crops and his mother in the Women’s Air Force. While Remembrance Day services were cancelled due to COVID-19, Mr Cullen said it was still a day of reflection for service men and women. “To me it’s just about remembering their service and what they have done, along with my own service, and to remember those that did not return home

and gave their lives so we could live in peace,” Mr Cullen said. Having served in a cadet corps while at school, Mr Cullen said he enjoyed the discipline and sought permission from his grandmother, with whom he was living, to sign up for Vietnam. “My grandmother made me promise that I would not go into the infantry or the artillery and said the best to apply for would be the Medical Corps. “The Army asked you to put down three choices and I put down medical, medical and medical.” Mr Cullen said few men sought to join the Medical Corp – just three from his intake applied – so it was little

surprise when he received his assignment. He served two tours of Vietnam, with two years with the 16 Commonwealth Field Ambulance in Malaya in between. “I was a Corporal when I went to Malaya and I came back a Sergeant, then went over to Vietnam again as a dust-off medic. “That involved flying out in a helicopter to pick up wounded from the battlefront and bringing them back for medical treatment.” Mr Cullen said flying over the battlefront was challenging, “especially when you were getting shot at by the enemy below”. His time with the Medical Corps ignited a passion for nursing and Mr Cullen went on to become a registered nurse working mainly in operating theatres.

Lotto win surprise A REDCLIFFE couple went out for breakfast last week and returned home $2 million richer. The couple had one of 10 division one winning entries nationally in the Gold Lotto $20 Million Superdraw on October 31. Each entry won $2 million. The ticket was unregistered, so officials from The Lott had to wait for them to come forward to claim their prize, which they did six days later. On Friday, the couple went into Redcliffe Discount Drug Store on Redcliffe Pde and discovered they were multi-millionaires. “We are just so overwhelmed,” the woman said, “I just can’t believe this. This is the best day of our lives.” The man said: “I am heading straight to work and I am quitting. I’m retiring!” The woman said: “I don’t want to make any rash decisions. I’d like to invest some, and we will help out our family. “We want to go to Egypt when we can travel overseas again, but it would be nice to do some trips around Australia in the meantime.”

CLOCKING up the 100 supervised driving hours needed to sit a driving test is particularly tough for young drivers who don’t have someone they can drive with. Deception Bay PCYC is running the Braking the Cycle program in a bid to solve this problem. It matches young learner drivers with a volunteer mentor and provides a safe vehicle for them to use. Mentors provide practical instruction and help participants develop positive road safety attitudes and safe driving behaviours, while also offering positive support and community connection. One of the 19 volunteer mentors, Barry Winter, joined the program after he moved to Woody Point and was looking for a way to make a difference in the community. “I wanted something to do after I finished my career and I wanted to do

something with youth. I saw this on social media and thought I might enjoy it. It’s been better than expected,” Mr Winter said. It follows a 37-year career as a police officer in southwest Queensland. Mr Winter said the program, open to people aged 16-25 years with a learner’s permit, gave young people the skills to become better drivers. “It gives them independence and furthers their opportunities for employment, that’s how I take it. A licence is a very important part of life,” he said. “You don’t have to have a police background to be a mentor or any experience with that type of thing. Anyone with a driver’s licence can do the program.” There are 24 learner drivers in the program at Deception Bay PCYC at present, 19 volunteers and two cars. Nine learners have passed their driving test since the program started at the centre.

Figures reveal shortfall STORY NICK CROCKFORD MORE than 30,990 tonnes of recyclables were collected in Moreton Bay Regional Council bins in the 2019-20 financial year – yet more was found in general waste bins. In National Recycling Week (November 9-15) an appeal has been made to improve those figures, the process and keep striving for ‘zero waste’. “We are really good at recycling items like paper, cardboard, glass, steel and aluminium cans,” Planet Ark Recycling Campaigns Manager Claire Bell told Dolphins News. “Container Deposit Schemes have been partic-

ularly successful, but some items still cause frequent confusion and contamination in kerbside recycling bins. “We need more resources and education from the grassroots up to the national level.” Mayor Peter Flannery recently revealed one of the worst cases, with a full barbecue gas cylinder being pulled from a recycling truck at Narangba Waste Management Facility. “The fact that nothing went wrong from the wheelie bin, to the collection truck, to processing at the recycling facility is a miracle,” he said. Less dangerous, but still of concern, is confusion over

Co-Directors and teachers Emma Dyson and Jen Christie are working with pupils and parents on initiatives to be sustainable. These include using much less or, ideally, no plastic wrap and bags; creating worm farms; repurposing items for craft or other uses at the kindergarten; and

even stuffing cushions with soft plastics. Solar panels on the roof generate electricity. The initiatives are already paying off, with juice from the worm farm sold to parents and the money raised used to buy plants for the herb and vegetable garden. Ms Dyson said children were also learning valuable lessons about sustainability that would hopefully stay with them for life. Recycled items are a big part of craft activities and the kindergarten is looking for more.

Queensland is also ahead of projections having this week recycled its three billionth drink container and Redcliffe is one of the program’s strongest areas. “Customer education has been crucial,” said Containers for Change spokesman Adam Nicholson, “but there’s now a good hold on what and where items can be recycled.” Containers for Change follows national standards and Mr Nicholson said there was potential for further change around items such as wine bottles. Mayor Peter Flannery added:

A MALE swan rescued from North Lakes by the RSPCA last month is on the mend in the capable hands of carers from Wildlife Rescue Queensland. The swan, dubbed `Siegfried’ by his carers in a nod to the ballet Swan Lake, was suffering from an injured foot when he was rescued, leaving behind mother swan Odette and their flock of cygnets. Siegfried has captured the imaginations of North Lakes residents, who have been following his progress on a community page on Facebook. Posts about Siegfried have attracted hundreds of reactions and comments seeking information about when he would be returned to his family. Wildlife Rescue Queensland president Byron Cann was touched by the community interest in Siegfried and said he was doing well. “He still needs to stay in care for a little bit longer,” Mr Cann said.

“But Siegfried will be getting back to Odette very soon. “He is in his final stages of care with our waterbird specialist in Burpengary.” Mr Cann said Siegfried was still favouring one leg due to soft tissue damage, which would improve over time, and was being treated with anti-inflammatory medication.

Brunch backs programs to help women STORY KYLIE KNIGHT THE Zonta Club of Redcliffe hopes the community will come together when it hosts a brunch on November 27 to raise money for programs supporting women affected by domestic violence. The event, at Pilpel Restaurant from 10.30amnoon, will feature guest speakers missionary nurse Margot Biggs and Senator Amanda Stoker. Mrs Biggs and her husband Steven, who is a pilot with Mission Aviation Fellowship, work in Liberia and returned in July. The registered nurse has been working at a mission hospital, treating patients but also training and mentoring local nurses. She said training and education standards were poor compared with the levels achieved by Australian nurses. “The majority of nurses need more education and training. Maths,

Red bags to bring cheer at Christmas WESLEY Mission Queensland’s annual Red Bag Appeal aims to bring Christmas cheer to 5000 families across Queensland. Margate’s Paul Reis, who is the General Manager of Fundraising for Wesley Mission, said many beneficiaries of the appeal lived in the Moreton Bay Region. Mr Reis said many families who were previously financially secure would be wondering how to put food on the table this Christmas. “We believe demand is going to be stronger than ever,” Mr Reis said. To donate to the appeal, which ends on November 27, collect a Red Bag from a National Storage depot and fill it with goods from the appeal shopping list. DECEPTION Bay Scouts finally have a new den to call home after almost two years of waiting. The move has been a long time coming, after a termite infestation forced the scouts from their home early in 2019, then in January the builder working on the new den went into liquidation. Work began on the $385,000 George St building in June, and now the scouts have

started moving in. Leader Adam Black said the group was delighted with its new home, after relying on the generosity of other community groups for accommodation. “It’s been a long process – we’ve had two mayors involved,” Mr Black said. “Moreton Bay Regional Council has been fantastic for getting it done.” Mayor Peter Flannery said the group had been very patient. “These children and

young adults were left without a place to gather and do what they love best, after termites destroyed their old scout den,” he said. “That’s why I am very pleased to usher a new era for Deception Bay Scouts to play, grow and learn valuable life lessons. “Scouts have long been a wonderful contributor to our community by building young leaders for the future and this is just a small way we can help them.”

Councillor Sandra Ruck (Div 5) said the scout den included a spacious kitchen, meeting room, storeroom and amenities, as well as being disability accessible. “Deception Bay Scouts have been forced to do things a little differently due to coronavirus, so that’s why we wanted to make sure their new home had everything they needed to thrive,” Cr Ruck said. Mr Black said the group, which includes Joeys, Cubs,

Scouts, Venturers and Rovers, was planning an official opening for February. In the meantime, Mr Black said they were looking for more leaders with a sense of adventure who enjoyed working with children, as well as volunteers for the group’s committee. “I describe Scouts as a youth-led, adult facilitated organisation,” he said. WITH only weeks to go before the Rockin’ 4 the Homeless album is released, the scale of the project cannot be overstated. Dealing with record labels, producers, artists, manufactures and media can be daunting, but not for the Rockin’ 4 the Homeless crew. Director Dan Nebe said they went “headfirst into the project, with little thought of failure”. “Even though the event was cancelled, the homeless still needed to be fed,” Mr Nebe said. “The Breakfast Club is still helping the community and that will never end.” Mr Nebe said it would be impossible to deliver the event and, this year, the album without the support of the corporate sector. With the album budget set at $20,000, the team set out to find sponsors. It took just one email to Stephan Siegfried from One Agency Real Estate and Darren Nebe from Kippa Ring Plumbing Service to get that money. “I’ve supported this event for four years now and have watched it grow and grow. I am proud to be a part of this Redcliffe first. An album to raise money, instead of a concert, is a great idea. The artists on the album

HISTORY Redcliffe will today launch its sixth limited-edition, collectible medallion – this one will commemorate the opening of the Hornibrook Bridge 85 years ago. The medallion is the latest in its series of 10, which have been released one at a time every year since 2014. The group researched and consulted with the community via surveys and meetings to identify 10 icons that represented the area’s rich cultural and social history. The medallions are 99.9 per cent Australian silver, designed by local artist Shea Charlish and produced by the Perth Mint. Only 250 of each one will be produced, and each is issued with a number and certificate of authenticity. A THREE-MONTH trial is underway to improve safety and traffic management at Mango Hill. Moreton Bay Regional Council has installed temporary pedestrian signals at the intersection of Capestone Boulevard and St Benedict’s Close.

The signals are being trialled during school term four, until December. Mayor Peter Flannery said the walkway was bustling with students, commuters accessing Mango Hill East railway station and locals. “If successful, we’ll immediately bring forward funding to install a permanent set of lights by the end

of the financial year,” Mayor Flannery said. Councillor Jodie Shipway (Div 4) said she had received positive feedback and looked forward to “seeing the results of the trial before signals potentially become a permanent feature in Mango Hill”. On the Moreton Daily Facebook page, residents

backed permanent traffic lights and called for more access roads. Clinton James said: “Turning into Capestone and having to go into one lane is dangerous. Other cars don’t stop at the lights to check first. Take the whole lot out and put in normal traffic lights”. Veronica Higgins found

Romance in the rotunda

STORY KYLIE KNIGHT WHEN Anton Cavalli decided to propose to Rebecca Phelps, the community rallied to help him create a magical setting in the location where they first spent time together. The iconic rotunda at Suttons Beach was transformed into a romantic candlelit dining room for two, with white sheer curtains, red roses and the warm glow of fairy lights. “When Bec and I arrived, there was a small audience gathered around and patrons of the (Suttons Beach) Pavilion all watching,” Mr Cavalli said.

“Once we stepped into the rotunda, I got down on one knee and asked Bec to be my wife. After sealing the proposal with a kiss, I did a little fist pump and declared the news to our unexpected community audience. The clapping and cheering really was heart-warming. the evening, “During many came past and congratulated us too. After a delicious meal served by the Pavilion we were joined by a few close friends and family for champagne and some delicious Italian sweets from Bazil & Co Cafe in Scarborough. It was perfect.” The night to remember

followed two weeks of careful and top-secret planning involving Oli Thomson and the Suttons Beach Pavilion team, friends Dannii Karametos and Samson Naylor, Siobhan Frith Jewellery, Midesign Floral, and Tony Torto at Bazil & Co. The couple has been together for one year, but met more than five years ago when Mr Cavalli adopted a cat named Huxley. “The cat that would soon take over my world and choose my bride. I did what a responsible owner does and took him to Scarborough Veterinary Surgery for his vaccinations. Bec is a surgical nurse there

and that set us up for intermittent contact over the years,” he said. Their relationship took the next step when Miss Phelps attended a couple of community events Mr Cavalli had organised and plucked up the courage to ask him out for coffee.

At this point I knew “I followed up on that coffee invite and after months of ‘unofficially dating’ we went on a dinner date, at this point ‘I knew’,” Mr Cavalli said.

Since then, they have been through challenges that have only made them stronger as a couple. These include Mr Cavalli’s diagnosis of stage four bone cancer. He has just finished six weeks of chemotherapy, with radiation therapy to start soon. “I remain very positive and determined to beat this. Bec is with me all the way,” Mr Cavalli said. “Getting down on one knee was no small feat, but I wasn’t going to have this any other way.” They will celebrate their engagement early next year and might tie the knot later in the year.

Talent shines through in art awards STORY JODIE POWELL

SCARBOROUGH’S Jasper Rogers loves everything about the ocean, so it is fitting that his entry in this year’s Moreton Bay Youth Art Awards earned him the top gong in the 3D category for pupils in Prep to Year 3. He spent days creating Under the Sea, a colourful, interactive piece made up of nine sea creatures. With fish, shark, seahorse, turtle and starfish, Under the Sea posed many challenges for the talented artist. Jasper, who is homeschooled, said while he was no stranger to two-dimensional art, he had only recently started creating three-dimensional pieces. “It’s my first year doing 3D – I have always done 2D,” the seven-year-old said. With the creatures mounted on sticks, Jasper worked hard to figure out the right height to display each piece to convey a story. “The shark and the seahorse were the hardest because they are really heavy,” he said.

I was diagnosed back in March 2020 with a 50mm tumour caused by an incurable cancer. The first session was a week in Ward 5 West at Redcliffe Hospital after the first operation to suss it out and do a repair on the kidney. From the surgeon Dr Nick Rukin down they are a wonderful lot. I can’t name them all, there are too many. The second session was on to the Redcliffe Hospital fourth floor Oncology, where I met up with Dr Bigby, a chemotherapy specialist. Then it was in for months of treatment. The third session was the Radiation Clinic at RBWH, where I met up with Dr Pratt, a wonderful radiation specialist. On October 22, I was told after another minor op that all the above people had performed their magic and I was in remission. Thank you to all the staff I met in the hospitals mentioned. Artisans making their mark STORY JODIE POWELL CHRISTMAS will come early for lovers of finely crafted goodies, with the Love Handmade Markets Margate Beach on November 14. Organiser Janmaree Lowe said the year had been tough for many of the region’s artisans because many markets were cancelled due to COVID-19 restrictions. Having run her Love Handmade Markets for almost eight years, Ms Lowe said she was looking forward to returning to the foreshore, just in time for the festive season. “We have missed those events this year, so this is a really important day for our makers,” Ms Lowe said. “If COVID’s taught us nothing else, it has taught us to appreciate our backyard and to support local businesses.

Business, jobs boost at Expo MORE than 700 people took part in the region’s biggest networking event for the year, the Moreton Bay Region Business and Jobs Expo, on October 29. The COVID safe event, held at the Hope Centre, Rothwell, provided an opportunity for guests to engage with business owners, jobs agencies, employers, and expert presentations and workshops. Moreton Bay Region Industry & Tourism CEO Shane Newcombe said the positive turnout proved this event was just what the business community needed. “It is no secret that small business is the driving force behind our region’s economy,” Mr Newcombe said. “It was fantastic to see the strong engagement with this expo, and the positive connections being made on the day.” It was the first time the event included the Moreton Bay Jobs Expo, drawing hundreds of job seekers who took advantage of the chance to speak with agencies, service providers and employers while they were all in one place.

STORY NICK CROCKFORD PENINSULA Power will host its first Australian Indigenous Football Festival next year. The four-day, three-match event will be at AJ Kelly Park, Kippa-Ring, on February 27. Club President Craig Feuerriegel said about 2000 spectators were expected. Pupils walk with purpose STORY KYLIE KNIGHT MORE than 100 Humpybong State School pupils wore red and walked along the foreshore to raise awareness of child safety during Day for Daniel on October 30. It was the sixth year the school hosted the walk, which included parents and staff, and raised money for the Daniel Morcombe Foundation. Deputy principal Melissa Wood said children learnt important personal safety messages by taking part – walking to school safely and being safe online. “We walk from two

points – Scott’s Point on the southside of the school and Suttons Beach on the northside of the school,” she explained. “This way they meet in the middle at the crossing opposite the schools Sol’s Seaside Escape Playground. Sol, our school Mascot, was present to greet the students and staff when they arrived.” As a Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) school, pupils also take part in a series of lessons focused on personal safety. “Denise and Bruce Morcombe visited our school last year to talk to all of our students about

the importance of safety. It was a privilege to meet these amazing parents and founders of the Daniel Morcombe Foundation,” Ms Wood said.

been discussing options for a while and after consulting a number of stakeholders and conducting surveys with existing patrons, they

settled on an approach that provided fresh, healthy options not previously available combined with many customer favourites.

“Another newcomer is the special seniors’ menu which has been requested by our regulars – this is a game-changer,” he said.

Each is like a small, or large, work of art and Maree takes great pleasure in the process of her work. “It’s in my head. I’m inspired more by the colours and putting colours together. The older ’50s Audrey Hepburn they’re all wonderful, but then you can do something silly like a flower that sits on a headband,” Mrs Starkey said. “I like to have all the materials, feathers and everything around me, then I go from there.” She attracts clients at the

Some clients phone her with the details of what they are planning to wear and leave it up to her to craft the perfect hat or fascinator. “I do like the big brims, they’re not the most wearable, but they do give that really sophisticated, very ’50s sort of look,” Mrs Starkey said. She has started creating sun hats, which can be worn more frequently, and also loves creating pieces for weddings. There was an increase in business in the lead-up to the Melbourne Cup, after a slow year due to COVID-19, and Mrs Starkey is looking to next year’s winter racing carnival with optimism.

“A lot of people don’t realise what’s on the peninsula – not just my business, but a lot of other businesses,” she said. “You can get custom-made and bespoke pieces or there’s plenty here you can look at.” Dezignz by Maree Millinery Studio is open by appointment, during business hours. Keeping pets safe in spring STORY JODIE POWELL A GARDEN full of flowers is beautiful to look at but could pose a problem for pets, according to a North Lakes vet. Greencross Vets chief veterinary officer Magdoline Awad said many people had adopted furry family members during the COVID-19 lockdown and, with spring in full swing, might not be aware which plants and flowers were toxic to dogs, cats and guinea pigs. “It is important for pet owners to know of the dangers that spring can bring,” Dr Awad said. She said flowering and nonflowering plants could cause allergies, and many common grasses, weeds and flowers could disrupt pets’ outside adventures. Sometimes allergies are due to

direct contact with plants, and pollen could be inhaled or absorbed through the skin of allergic pets. Other plants are more dangerous when they are eaten. “Just like kids, our pets love to explore and try new things – tasting, smelling, chewing and rolling on things that they shouldn’t,” Dr Awad said. “Simply coming into contact with certain plants and weeds can cause pets to suffer an uncontrollable urge to scratch, lick, chew and rub at their skin until fur loss and dermatitis develops.” Dr Awad said it was important for people to recognise the signs a pet may have come into contact with something toxic. She said eating certain flowers, fruit seeds and plants could cause toxicity or internal blockages.

Greencross North Lakes practice manager Amy Ward said it was important for pet owners to keep a close eye on pets during spring. “If you recognise any of the signs that indicate your pet may have come into contact with something toxic, call or visit Greencross Vets North Lakes immediately. “For those who want to practice safe social distancing, we also offer WebVet, an athome video call service, so our dedicated and qualified team of veterinarians and nurses can assess your pet via video call, to provide advice and support,” Ms Ward said.

“We also have minimal contact offerings, which allow pet parents to drop and collect their pets outside our North Lakes clinic to reduce physical interaction.” Dr Awad said cut lilies were among the most common dangers to cats. “Even the pollen can cause serious kidney problems. Avoid lilies if you have cats at home,” she said.

G’DAY folks, November is always a productive month in Moreton Bay. The weather is heating up and, with earlyseason rain, the bay will come alive. The two species I chase from mid-November on are Mackerel and Prawn. School and Spotted Mackerel can be found in patches from the southern bay right through to the northern bay. My preferred at this time of year is the northern bay. I routinely put in at Clontarf’s Pelican Park and my first stop is the Measured Mile. I look for the birds working and throw 45g Halco Twisties in silver or gold. If I haven’t had any strikes after trying both pylons at the Measured Mile, I will make my way to the four beacons at the southern end of Moreton Island. It’s very important to me when looking for Mackerel to approach each beacon as quietly as possible. Using an electric motor is definitely advantageous, when trying to approach in stealth mode. Without an electric motor, the same can be achieved with long drifts past the pylons.

Just make sure you don’t motor over the drift lines when repeating the drift. For the bait, anchoring up-current away from the structure/pylons and floatlining a lightly-weighted pilchard back toward the structure will often come up trumps. My last stop when the mackerel are difficult to find are the pylons M2, M3 and M4 in the shipping channel at the northern end of Moreton Island. If your taste is for Prawns, then all the estuary systems from the Brisbane River to Caboolture River work very well. You will see tight groups of tinnies, when the prawns come on. With the recent rain and the long-range weather forecast predicting above average rainfall, there should be big numbers of prawns around. My favourite locations to chase a feed of prawns from now until April is Clontarf, Pine River west of the Highway and the Caboolture River. Just look for the boats throwing cast nets. That’s it for another fortnight. Tight lines, fish harder and see you on the water.

STINGRAYS are common inhabitants of Moreton Bay. There are 13 species of stingray in Moreton Bay, with two being more frequently encountered by anglers. The blue spotted stingray is the most common, while the brown (or estuary) stingray is one of the largest. The brown stingray is slow growing and late maturing. Females mature at a disc width of 63cm and 13 years of age, while males mature at a disc width of 41cm and seven years of age. Stingrays feed by digging pits in the sand or mud and consuming the various crabs, worms and other small animals that reside there. Their foraging activities play an important ecological role as the pits subsequently provide habitat for animals including juvenile whiting and juvenile eastern king prawns. As most anglers know, stingrays possess a venomous spine (or spines) on their tail that they use in self-defence. Stingray envenomations are common in the Moreton Bay region with the Tangalooma region of Moreton Island being a hotspot - a product of a lot of people in the water overlapping with habitat favourable for stingrays. The stingray spine is a solid barbed structure with the venom containing cells in the epithelium (skin cells) surrounding the spine. Spines are composed of strong bonelike material called vasodentin. The spine itself is not directly involved in injecting venom, but rather it causes physical damage to the tissue allowing the venom to enter. The barbs of the spine result in very

DR DAZZA jagged wounds. Stingray venom is a mix of compounds including serotonin, which causes intense pain out of proportion to the size of the wound. Interestingly, serotonin is a naturally occurring hormone in humans which causes feelings of happiness and well-being, but when injected into the skin the opposite result occurs. Serotonin is also found in other animal venoms including snakes and scorpions. Stingray venom has powerful necrotic activity, which can be particularly problematic if all the barb material is not effectively removed from the wound. Treatment for stingray envenomation includes immersion of the wound in hot water as soon as possible as the heat breaks down the chemical structures of the venom. There is no anti-venom. Doctors may also use antiobiotics for treatment as the risk of bacterial infection of the wound is high. Treatment should also include thorough irrigation of the wound to remove all foreign matter. THE hard work has started for this year’s Dolphins Intrust Super Cup squad, with preseason training underway after COVID-19 robbed them of a season that had so much promise. Coach Adam Mogg spoke with Dolphins News ahead of the squad’s second training session about how the things are looking after session one and such a long break from footy. “I was really happy with the boys, they’re in reasonable shape considering they haven’t played much footy over the last almost a year,” Mogg said. “We’ve got plenty of time before round one. We’ll get enough work into the guys and they’ll be ready in round one I’m sure. “Essentially, preseason is a combination of obviously getting fit and strong – the challenge at our level is we’ve got to add skill work into that, teamwork, fitness and strength.” The club is still signing players – working within its salary cap, with the Vodafone Warriors and its affiliate clubs. Some of last season’s squad, which offered so much promise, has been secured for 2021. “We haven’t signed all of them. The last preseason was certainly our best preseason as a club, since I’ve

been here both in terms of the talent – we had a small squad and the players just enjoyed training,” he said. “Because of having a good squad … we’ve got a salary cap … other clubs have seen opportunities, with our affiliation with the Warriors, to offer players opportunities. Unfortunately, we can’t keep them all. That’s the idea of salary caps, how they work. “I’m excited to see Jayden Nikorima play some football. He’s really turned his life around and he’s at the Warriors doing a preseason over there and I think if he gets through a really good preseason, unscathed, he’ll set himself up for a really good year,” he said. “I’m (also) excited to see Nathan Watts play. He’ll do a preseason at the Warriors. Nathan, in my opinion, has been one of the best props in the competition for several years and it will be good to see him have an NRL preseason and how much he can improve.” Mogg said he was proud of the affiliation with the Warriors because it offered a genuine pathway for players. “They’ve been helping us with our recruitment, so it benefits the NRL but also us as well. More importantly, I think the guys who genuinely want to play NRL, this is a great opportunity for them.”

STORY NICK CROCKFORD TWELVE-year-old Phoebe Smith, from Sandgate-Redcliffe Gators, has hit the Sunshine Coast for six in the Queensland Grade competition – with the ball, not the bat. Phoebe had a stunning “six-fer” after being called into the Sandgate-Redcliffe Gators’ Second Grade women’s team for their Queensland Premier C match on November 1. The Redcliffe City Cyclones player opened the bowling and took the first six wickets, for a career-best 6-14 from eight overs, beating her 3-8 for Queensland. It included a wicket with her first ball and a double-wicket maiden for her first over. Phoebe’s 6-14 was, at

the time, the second-best bowling performance this season by a Gator in Queensland Grade cricket, behind Queensland Bulls’ leg-spinner Mitchell Swepson (7-47). “The first wicket surprised me, as it was my first ball,” the Redcliffe State High School student said. “I was just trying to get it straight. “When I kept taking wickets, I was happy and relieved to be helping the team and repaying coach Jack Doyle as he was the one who invited me to play.” Unfortunately, Phoebe’s remarkable efforts could not save Gators’ from defeat, but she now has a combined 8-31 off 12 overs in her two senior Gators’ matches. “(Phoebe) just being giv-

Jasmine clocked 34 minutes 13.77 seconds and Amber, who only started race walking earlier this year, 37 minutes 28.58 seconds at the Queensland Sport and Athletics Centre (QSAC). Their Redcliffe colleague Daniel Harlow, who is 12, won bronze medals in both the Under-14 Boys’ 400m, clocking 55.92 and in the 90m hurdles in 14.25 seconds. entrants, some from as far as Bundaberg, for its Twilight Carnival on October 24. Unfortunately, heavy rain forced an early finish to what organisers said was already a “fantastic day”. It will be rescheduled for January. There was also praise for Redcliffe from a parent of a girl in a multiclass at the carnival, which they were attending for a third time. “The simple acceptance you provided especially for physical needs athletes plays such a huge role for athletes such as my daughter,” the mum said. “Your attitude will give her the determination to continue to fight to achieve the same goals as able bodied athletes. Showing her they are also entitled to achieving medal placings.”

DECEPTION Bay is returning to the Brisbane’s Capital Football League in 2021 – and already has two experienced coaches in place. The Dragons have Mark Offer back as the first-grade coach and Brad Ross as the club’s reserve-grade coach for the Capital 3 season. Secretary Kim Dean said the club was excited about the season ahead. “Mark is sure to attract some attention in the local football community having developed and grown club junior and senior development squads,” Dean said. “Brad has assisted Mark over the years. He brings football experience and passion and intends to attract players and supporters including junior players to the club.” Mark Offer was in charge of Dragons’ Capital 4 League side in 2016 when late-season injuries meant they just missed promotion and the finals.

the Indians in 1990-91. Phil played for nine seasons with the Gold Coast Dolphins/Cougars in the original ABL. After eight seasons as player-coach with Indians, Phil’s #20 jersey was retired by the club.

PENINSULA Power have secured the NPL Queensland Premiership, the greatest achievement in the club’s 20-year history, with a commanding win over Capalaba on Friday night. The side beat the Bulldogs 5-0, taking them to 18 wins and out of reach of second-placed Olympic, who were on 15 wins with two games to play. Peninsula Power president Craig Feuerriegel said the win against Capalabla was a great way to secure the club’s first NPL Queensland Championship at only their second attempt. “We knew it was in our hands and had to put in a good performance as well. While it would have been exciting to take it to the last game, we’re against Lions and knew anything was possible,” Feuerriegel said.

“We’re the only club that have won the NPL women in 2017, the FQPL men in 2018 (undefeated), and now the NPL men. “I’m chuffed and very proud. It’s been a passion for a long time to get to the top but there’s a lot of people who have been involved along the way and it’s a testament to them as well.” Power were early favourites last season after winning 13 and drawing one of their first 14 games, only to finish third. This season, they lost two of their first four games (either side of the COVID lockdown) but swept to top spot with four games remaining. On Saturday, Football Queensland will present the team with the championship trophy and medallions after their final game of the regular season against Lions at AJ Kelly Park. TURN TO // PAGE 58
