WALTER SAY HELLO TO THE

WALTER Family!

Family members: Sarah & Dave, Avery (11) and Gavin (9) and Millie our dog.

How long have you lived in the neighborhood? We moved to Park Ridge in 2021.

How long have you been with your spouse and how did you meet? We met in college and we’ve been together since 2004.

What are your professions? Dave works at Constellation Brands as a Senior Director and Sarah works at Dish Network as a Senior Account Executive within their ad-sales team.

Tell us about your kids. We have two children, Avery is in 6th grade and Gavin is in 3rd grade.

What do you like to do together as a family? We love being outside; taking Millie on a run, swimming at the pool, or cheering the kids on at their games and competitions. The kids love to play golf all together - probably just to drive the cart but they have a blast. It’s the little things that keep us connected and make the memories stick.

Are you passionate about any charities? Our family is deeply involved in supporting Breakthrough T1D, formerly known as JDRF, ever since our daughter Avery was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. What started as a tough diagnosis has turned into a powerful source of purpose for our whole family. We created “Avery’s Army,” our team for the annual Chicagoland Walk to Cure T1D, and it’s grown into this amazing community of friends, family, and neighbors all rallying behind the cause. Every year, we raise funds to support research for better treatments and ultimately a cure and we’ve seen firsthand how much progress is being made. For anyone looking to get involved, joining our walk team, donating to Breakthrough T1D, or even just helping us spread awareness makes a real difference. It’s something that means the world to us. Please join us this month on September 28th for this year’s walk. For more information, go to: www2.breakthrought1d.org.

Are you involved in the community at all? Dave coaches soccer and flag football and Sarah is on the board of the Roosevelt Elementary PTO and involved with Park Ridge Competitive Cheer. Sarah also helps out with school events and fundraisers; especially around Type 1 Diabetes awareness and she’s also co-chairing an event in this month benefiting Will’s Place’s (a nonprofit café in Skokie, Illinois, dedicated to creating meaningful employment and vocational training opportunities for adults with disabilities). We really value being part of a connected, supportive community, and it’s important to us that our kids grow up seeing the impact of showing up and giving back.

Describe your perfect day in Park Ridge as a family. A walk to the Farmers Market to grab coffee and fresh produce. From there, we’re usually on the sidelines of a game or two; cheering on one of the kids. We love the car show that happens in Uptown! We love ending the day on a patio or around the fire pit, soaking in that easy, small-town summer magic.

RADIANCE BEGINS HERE

Favorite Park Ridge Restaurant? It’s hard to choose! Fire and Wine, Paninos, and the Pancake House are our favorites. I’m pretty sure given the chance Avery would eat Jersey Mikes every day.

Favorite Park Ridge Park? Centennial.

Favorite Park Ridge historic landmark? The Pickwick Theater!

Avery’s Army Lemonade Stand raised almost $2000 for T1D this year. STROLL Park Ridge was a proud sponsor.

Follkee - A Legacy of Craft, Carried by Family

Handcrafted sheepskin accessories to enhance your everyday comfort.

Family businesses are built on more than just products— they’re woven from stories, shaped by traditions, and powered by the passion that turns craftsmanship into legacy. Follkee is no exception. Founded in 1994 in the heart of Poland’s Tatra Mountains by our visionary father, Follkee has grown to become a name synonymous with artistry, comfort, and timeless elegance.

Tell us about your family.

We are Natalia, Bart, Borys, and Lili an we represent the second generation. When we moved to the United States, settling in Park Ridge, it wasn’t just about expanding our business. It was about creating a future filled with opportunity for our children We wanted Borys and Lili to grow up surrounded by great friends and a strong community; a place where they could thrive, dream big, and carry the spirit of Follkee forward.

Why did you choose to live in Park Ridge?

We love bike riding and having noted Park Ridge as a family-friendly destination while living in Chicago, we always dreamed of moving in to raise our kids with great opportunities. Our neighbors know us for our friendliness, smiles, and help to our community.

What is unique about your business?

Follkee product reflects the duality of our identity, rooted in tradition, yet shaped by modern life. Slippers, home furnishings, and accessories are not just creations; they are vessels of heritage, crafted to feel like home and made to last. Just as we cherish our family legacy, we also honor the earth that inspires it. Our commitment to ecoconscious production means that every stitch, fiber, and finish is chosen with care, allowing our products to bring warmth while leaving a gentle footprint. Today, Follkee touches lives across Europe and the United States, connecting customers to something deeper than style—a sense of story, of family, of soul. Behind each piece is the heartbeat of our family, stitching together history and hope with every thread. As we continue to grow, we remain committed to the values that launched us: authenticity, craftsmanship, and care.

What do you love about our neighborhood publication? Weaving stories and souls into neighbors!

Does Archie have any specific talents or tricks? Archie is sneaky and can pull anything off the table in a blink of an eye.

Is there anything other neighbors or pets would know Archie for? Archie is pretty well known in our neighborhood thanks to his bright orange harness and my son Jack talking him to the park often.

How would your pet tell the story of the day they met you and your human family? My dad and brother brought

so small and nervous. They showered me with kisses and cuddles. It was love at first sight!

What are his personality traits? Archie is your typical “Staffy”. He is super fun and energetic. He tries to act tough but all he wants is attention and affection.

What is Archie’s favorite Park Ridge park? Northwest Park.

What is his pet peeve? Being left out. He enjoys being with the family at all times, inside or outside.

Proud Sponsor Of

Gavin Smith

Street you live on: Home Street.

School you attend and grade you’re in? Maine South and I am a senior.

What sport do you play?

Football. I have been playing football for ten years with two of those being in flag football and eight years in tackle football.

What inspired you to start playing football?

I was inspired by hearing stories of my dad playing high school football and also watching my older brother play youth football.

What position do you play?

I am a middle linebacker and I hope to continue playing this position in college.

Do you have any personal goals for this season?

A few personal goals of mine are to be a team captain and all conference and all area player while maintaining straight A’s in my classes.

What are your goals moving forward as you continue your football career?

I want to be an impact player at a successful college program.

Who is your favorite athlete and what is your favorite football team?

Luke Kuechly and my favorite team is the Green Bay Packers.

What is the biggest lesson that football has taught you?

The biggest lesson that football has taught me is that adversity brings the most opportunity for development.

When you’re not playing football, what do you like to do?

Outside of football, I enjoy spending time with friends and family, working out and playing pickleball.

What has been your biggest challenge on the field?

My biggest challenge is adjusting when a play breaks down.

What advice would you give to a younger football player just starting out?

Always be coachable and never underestimate your opponents.

“Gavin is a multi-sport athlete who excels in the classroom. Never taking a shortcut, he is a leader on and off the field. He “gets it” and is so easy to coach. He demands excellence of himself and others. MSFB wins because of players like Gavin.”

Positively Park Ridge Person Of The Month: Joseph Steinfels

How long have you lived in Park Ridge?

I’m what I like to call a “Park Ridg-inal” — someone who grew up here, spent high school eager to get out to “the real world” beyond our quiet, safe town, and then found my way back. Like many Park Ridg-inals, after college (or in my case, the Marines) and a few years in Chicago — Lincoln Park or Bucktown now South Loop or River North — move back home. Many of us return, usually with 1 to 1.2 children, ready to raise the next generation here.

Tell us about your family.

My wife, Demelza, and I met in high school, which makes our Park Ridge roots even deeper. We have four children: Andrew, a junior at MS; Josette, a freshman at MS; Eloise, 7 (LMS); and James, 6 (LMS).

How have you been involved in the community?

After serving 24 years in the Marines, I retired and returned home to raise my family and give back to the community. My involvement includes being a father, scout leader, Library Board member, Alderman, church lector, Kiwanian, and Memorial Day Parade Chair. Professionally, I’m a Cook

County State’s Attorney and a part-time professor at Oakton Community College.

Advice on being a good neighbor or friend.

Empathy is the most important interpersonal trait. The willingness to understand and value another person’s perspective is vital for a civil society. We don’t have to agree with every position, but we should listen, respect, and remember that others are just as important as ourselves. Thoughtfulness and kindness go far; contempt and dismissal divide. After all, we’re all neighbors and fellow travelers in life.

What do you love about Stroll Magazine?

My favorite part of Stroll Park Ridge is how the magazine puts the community front-and-center in everything. It’s not just about the restaurants, not just about the businesses, not just about the sports, not just about the schools, but all of it. After all, it’s the people who make Park Ridge the wonderful place it is. And Stroll always puts the people in our community first.

Do you know a POSITIVE person in Park Ridge? We bet you do! Nominate them to be honored! Email strollparkridge@gmail.com

Fresh Ground Burgers and Fresh Cut Fries THE SANDLOT

This month, we are thrilled to feature Stroll Park Ridge Magazine’s Best of Park Ridge: BEST BURGER 2025 award winner—The Sandlot! Their hamburgers earned the top spot voted by readers because they are made fresh every single day. Their fries? Also handcut daily. Owner Tom Marabanian takes great pride in everything his restaurant serves.

The Sandlot has been a Park Ridge staple for 13 years. The name was chosen by Tom’s children after narrowing down a long list of ideas. They picked “The Sandlot” because it resonated with people—and because many of the things their dad did reminded them of the beloved movie.

The Sandlot is best known for its TWO-N-TWO burger, featuring double meat and double cheese. Our taste

testers—six local students—loved this hearty sandwich! The fresh-cut French fries were the perfect side. We also sampled the single burger. For those with a bigger appetite, they even offer triple and quadruple versions!

Beyond their flavorful burgers, we enjoyed their handbreaded chicken sandwich—both the regular and spicy versions were equally satisfying. We also tried the BaconBacon Lettuce & Tomato sandwich and the Classic Chicago Hot Dog loaded with all the fixings. To wash it all down, there’s a variety of drinks along with outstanding ice cream shakes, malts, and Sandstone Mixers. Sundaes, cones, and root beer floats are available as well. Next time you’re hungry, head to The Sandlot for mouthwatering burgers, crispy fries, cool desserts, and a dash of movie nostalgia!

Young Hands, Big Hearts: Akin for Action

By focusing on kid-forward, familyfriendly volunteer activities, your whole family will learn, grow, and inspire together. Akin For Action is all about an ever-growing variety of volunteering opportunities that gives children interactive ways to participate in their communities while developing sense of self and community. Akin For Action gives children and families a space to learn and discuss what community building means and looks like in action. We are a family of families working to build a stronger village.

How long have you been doing this and tell us how it started? Established in September 2024 – We’re local parents who wanted opportunities for our young children to learn about and do community service in meaningful ways. So many great opportunities out there are tailored for older teens and adults. We wanted to create a village that would grow with us.

Why is it so important to our community? Our Co-Founder and Treasurer are Park Ridge residents, while our other Co-Founder and Secretary reside in nearby Norwood Park and are active participants in the Park Ridge community. Park Ridge is a vibrant and growing community. How can we feel connected, cared for, and welcome? How do we foster sense of family? With a beautiful and diverse population of young families, we knew there’s an eager group looking for a place to create and maintain purposeful relationships in an enthusiastic and inclusive community. Akin For Action gives children in Park Ridge and the surrounding areas the power to learn about and participate in community service and fully includes them in brainstorming and developing our activities.

Is there a way that others can get involved or support your organization? Families are the bedrock of Akin For Action. Our programs are free and open to families with children of all ages. Follow us on Instagram @ AkinForAction to stay up to date on our projects! Feel free to check out our website: AkinForAction.org. UR MOM: PARK RIDGE’S LOCAL BAND YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT!

WE’RE UR MOM (pronounced “your mom”), a rock quartet from Park Ridge. We perform regularly throughout the Midwest, in 2024 opening for ZZ Top and Lynyrd Skynyrd at Ravinia, and this year at Summerfest in Milwaukee.

What prompted you to start your band? Ur Mom is comprised of Maura Wolf (vocals/guitar), Andrew Vucsko-Cameron (bass), Tommy Hinds (guitar), and Alex O’Malley (drums). In elementary

school, Tommy (guitarist) and Alex (drummer) met on the local baseball team and frequently talked about music together. Eventually, they started a band called “The Hustle” during lunch at Emerson Middle School. I (Maura Wolf) was more of a latebloomer when it came to music. When I signed up for “Guitar 1” at Maine South, everything changed. It was there that I met a few classmates and started my first band. The lineup shifted a few times, as most bands do, and through mutual friends and engaging in the local music scene, the four of us found each other.

Tell us a little about your band. Ur Mom is eager to bring back the importance of raw instrumentation. Blending our wide range of influences, we’ve created a fresh, high-energy sound. We’re thrilled to announce the release of our debut album “Shrinks for Suburbanites” — a wry, heartfelt take on the “struggles” of suburban life.

How long have you lived in the neighborhood? We all were raised in Park Ridge!

Do you have any upcoming events? Yes! Our album release show for “Shrinks for Suburbanites” is on Saturday, September 6th at Chicago’s renowned Martyrs’ (3855 N Lincoln Ave). You can get your tickets on our website: weareurmom.com/shows If you can’t already tell, the album title “Shrinks for Suburbanites” has a touch of self-deprecating humor. Since we’re from the suburbs and have each gone to therapy at one point or another, I thought it’d be a clever title. One stand-out track on the album is, “Sushi (With Your Ex)”. The opening line goes, “Sushi with your ex, pretty fancy for high school”. Getting sushi in high school is pretty ridiculous. It’s obviously being funded by someone’s parent - soooo suburban.

Brittany’s Bites of Heaven

It’s a wonderful chewy chocolate chip cookie, made with whole wheat flour and organic ingredients! It’s delicious and this recipe makes 2 massive cookies, but I can double, triple, quadruple the recipe when needed!!

• 2 tbsp organic sugar

• 4 tbsp organic brown sugar

• 1 tsp organic vanilla extract

• 1/4 cup whole wheat flour

• 4 tbsp chocolate chips

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees

4. In a small bowl, combine butter and sugar, then add salt and vanilla and stir.

5. Add in egg yolk and stir until well combined.

DID YOU KNOW?

AS ONE WALKS, OR DRIVES, around Park Ridge, one cannot help but be struck by the wide variety of styles of construction of single-family homes. Closer to the center of the city large frame

construction homes can be found, many of which date from the early years of our city’s history.

As more families moved to suburban Park Ridge, more housing styles began to appear. Kit homes, such as were manufactured by Sears, Montgomery Ward, and others, offered a variety of home designs. One could select the desired design and then order all the components necessary to assemble in place. A 30,000-piece delivery was not uncommon. Many of these “kit” homes can still be found here and are an important part of Park Ridge’s history.

The bungalow was one of the styles available in these kits. One could also purchase bungalow plans from a catalog. Bungalow homes are typically rectangular, single-story or oneand-a-half story homes, with wide overhangs, large windows, a low-pitched roof and a front porch. The second story is smaller than the first floor. Brick bungalows are very common, but frame bungalows, some with “craftsman-style” features, are also found. Bungalows are known for their practical design. First appearing in California, thousands of these homes were built throughout Chicagoland between 1915 and 1940. Their design made them affordable for young families.

One of Park Ridge’s bungalows was recently recognized by Park Ridge’s Historic Preservation Commission as being 100 years old. Among the documents provided by the owner, Stephen Derfiny, was an annotated aerial view photo showing the Pickwick Theatre under construction. The theater opened in 1928 as a vaudeville theater and movie palace. The Derfiny bungalow is shown in place on Wisner. The Derfiny’s bungalow home tells a part of the story of Park Ridge’s past and is one of Park Ridge’s treasures at present.

Is your home 100 years old? Would you like a “birthday card” to celebrate your home? You can complete the form at this link: https://parkridgeil.rja.revize.com/forms/2042

SEPTEMBER BRINGS SUMMER’S END

September brings summer’s end

As children head back to school again

Amid the studies memories flood in

Teachers ask all to tell what they did

The stories are different for each kid

Some went away to summer camp

Others skateboarded up and down the ramp

Many went with families to the lake

Creating memories that were great

Still more rode bikes all over town

Every day riding all around

Baseball pick up games still were found

Days of shooting hoops at the park

Trying to stay out until it was dark

Hanging out at the pool

Was one way to stay cool

Concerts under the stars

We did not have to go far

Now as fall is a few weeks away

Football and soccer kids will play

Autumn will bring new fun

So enjoy those memories every one!
