Designated Appletini Mocktail INGREDIENTS:
• Granulated sugar, for rimming • 1/4 cup freshly pressed apple juice • 1 tablespoon simple syrup • 1/2 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice • Apple slices, for garnish
DIRECTIONS:
• Rim a chilled cocktail glass with the sugar. • Pour the apple juice, simple syrup, and lemon juice into a cocktail shaker filled with ice. • Shake well. • Strain into the prepared glass. • Garnish with apple slices. Serve and enjoy.
• 1/4 cup seville (bitter) orange marmalade • 1/2 cup cranberry juice • Juice of 1 lime • Lemon twists for garnish
DIRECTIONS:
• Place the marmalade in a strainer over a small bowl. • Gradually add 2 tablespoons boiling water as you force the jelly, not the peels, through the strainer. • Stir it. • Place marmalade syrup in a mixing glass. • Add lime juice, cranberry juice and ice. • Stir well. • Strain into two chilled stemmed cocktail glasses and garnish with twists.

CHAR DOG & SUNNY BY RESIDENT MIKE OLIJNYK
When and how did your pets come to join your family? Char Dog in 2017, Sunny in 2023. Both were rescued Chicagoland Lab Rescue. Is there a story behind your pets’ names? Char Dog was
originally Charlie but he has this high energy personality and love of food that we began calling him Char Dog. Sunny was already her name when we fostered her, it is so fitting to her personality. She is so loving and affectionate. She is our Puppy Sunshine. Kids who are scared of Char Dog jumping around are happy to pet her because of her calm demeanor.
What’s the one trait or behavior that makes your pets stand out from the rest? Char Dog’s love of kale, broccoli and other
vegetables. He picks his own in the garden too. Sunny is a lab of love. She loves to cuddle and competes for attention if we pet Char Dog. While she’s friendly to people, she is the enforcer in the yard, going after squirrels and chipmunks that dare to trespass.
Do your pets have any unique talents or tricks? Char Dog
specializes in stealing food off the kitchen counter in creative ways. Sunny can stand on her hind legs to get our attention.

Do your pets have any favorite toys or treats? Char Dog loves rubber squeak balls. Sunny likes stuffed animals.

fritter sometimes. And Sunny is well known at the PNC Bank on Devon, where they offer her a bank envelope full of treats on our visits. Char Dog is too rambunctious to come along to the bank though.
What are your pets’ “pet peeves”? Char
Dog hates baths. He also doesn’t like his paws touched. Sunny has a hard time going up and down stairs because of a physical deformity she had when we got her.

Frigid temps couldn’t stop the holiday cheer! 2nd Annual Park Ridge Christmas Stroll

n December 13, 2025, Stroll Park Ridge hosted the 2nd Annual Park Ridge Christmas Stroll, and even single-digit temperatures couldn’t keep the community away. Bundled-up families filled Uptown Park Ridge for a day of festive fun. Residents strolled to the Park Ridge Public Library for winter wonderland crafts, the Pickwick Theatre for a viewing of Elf, St. Paul of the Cross to hear the angelic sounds of the adult & children’s choirs, Park Ridge Community Church for countless performances including a children’s Christmas pageant, Hodges Park for friendly snowball fun with Buddy the Elf. Residents also strolled over to the Santa House (Stroll Park Ridge office) to visit with Santa where hot chocolate and Mrs. Claus’ cookies were served along with vintage train displays and table crafts. The Great Hall at the Park Ridge Community Church was all aglow with trees decorated by area not for profits. Congratulations to Rainbows for all Children for winning the most votes for favorite tree. A heartfelt thank you goes to the more than 100 volunteers who braved the cold to make the day run smoothly, and to the Kiwanis Club of Park Ridge, the beneficiary of this beloved community event. Special thanks to Paul Hansen for sharing his beautiful vintage train displays at the Santa House, delighting visitors of all ages. FROSTY START, FESTIVE FINISH: PARK RIDGE TURNS OUT FOR THE INAUGURAL SANTA STROLL 5K Single digit temperatures didn’t freeze the holiday spirit at the Inaugural Park Ridge Santa Stroll 5K, Stroll Mile & Jingle Jog on December 13, 2025. The Santa Stroll was a benefit for The Harbour. More than 200 residents registered for the event, but only about half actually showed up (who could blame them; it was COLD!) to brave the cold and run for a cause with Santa Clause! A DJ played holiday tunes, inflatable15 foot Santa and Snowman greeted runners, and everyone enjoyed a light breakfast (the bananas unfortunately froze solid) before taking on the challenge wearing Santa hats and beards; kids wore reindeer antlers and Rudolph noses and wore bells from Santa’s sleigh. Mr. & Mrs. Claus lead the countdown to the Falala Finish line and Park Ridge’s spirit warmed hearts once again!

When did you first start playing hockey? I started to play hockey at the age of 3. My dad and grandpa both played hockey growing up so one day my parents took me to the Skokie Skatium and ever since that day I loved hockey. What schools did you attend and what was it like growing up in Park Ridge? I went to Washington for 3rd grade and went to
Maine South High School.
Who were your hockey heroes growing up? Growing up I always watched Sidney Crosby and Patrick Kane but as I got older I started to like the grinders like Andrew Shaw and Darren Helm. Is there a particular coach, teammate, or family member who had a big influence on your career? I’ve came across a lot of
amazing and inspiring coaches through the years but a couple that really made me the player I am today is Pat Ferschweiler, Jim Rosequist and Nikos Tselios.
What’s your go-to meal before or after a big game? Go to meal
before a game is Chipotle and then chicken and pasta after the game.
Who is someone you admire? I admire my parents. Without them this dream of playing hockey wouldn’t be possible so I owe everything that I’ve become in this sport to them. They’ve made so many sacrifices for me to be able to play this sport so it’s really a no-brainer that they’re my heroes. What message do you hope to share with young athletes Always have fun. I play hockey because I love it and it’s still really fun to compete and play every day. No matter the outcome of a game or if you make a bad play you have to remember that you’re playing a game so never take that for granted. Remember to have fun!
When you’re not on the ice, how do you like to spend your time? Outside of hockey I enjoy playing golf and fishing. I also like to give back to the community by coaching at local ice rinks in Illinois.

How long have you lived in Park Ridge? Except for a ten year stint in the city, I have spent my entire life in Park Ridge.
Tell us about your family. I met my husband Mike in freshman
year Spanish at Maine South. We have three boys, Mac, Jack, and Collin, who has MED13L, a condition so rare it does not have a name beyond the gene itself. The diagnosis has shaped our journey and helped us find incredible support in this community.

Who is your inspiration? Watching Collin work so hard for
every milestone and doing it with joy has changed the way I see everything. Mac and Jack inspire me too in how they love and protect their brother, one with humor and one with heart. Somewhere today a parent is hearing a diagnosis for the first time
or sitting in the car after an appointment trying to catch their breath. I want them to know another parent has stood where they are. They are not alone, their voice matters, and they can build something powerful out of something hard.
What do you think makes Park Ridge unique? Park Ridge is
a town where people show up without being asked. Last year I hosted a fundraiser for MED13L and 500 people came out on a freezing January night to support Collin, MED13L, and children they had never met. After Collin’s diagnosis we saw that same spirit in countless ways. Stroll Magazine organized a Rare Bear Hunt, featured Collin and the foundation, and helped raise awareness. Girl Scouts made Rare Bears for Mac and Jack to bring to a MED13L meet up. Local restaurants hosted Dine and Donates, stores donated proceeds, and MSW directed its Stroll contest donation to MED13L. Kids even made bracelets for our research conference. That generosity is what makes Park Ridge special and why I love Stroll Magazine.
What is your favorite season? Summer is my favorite season. I love the uptown events at Hodges Park and dinner outside on Main Street. What are you looking forward to? I am excited for The
Road Full of Promise fundraiser at Joe’s Live on January 24th benefitting families with MED13L.
As a positively Park Ridge person - what is your advice on how to be a good neighbor or friend? Collin spends countless
hours in therapies learning how to navigate this world. Thank you for teaching your children how to navigate it with him. Invite questions. Model language that is inclusive and affirming. Tell us about this organization. Selah Freedom’s mission is to end sex trafficking and bring freedom to the exploited. Selah Freedom has five arms that help spread this mission. Those arms include; Awareness, Residential, Outreach, Prevention and Consulting. Prevention educates youth and adults in efforts to prevent sex trafficking from ever happening in the first place. Prevention works with child welfare, schools and community organizations by bringing specialized developmentally appropriate training to youth. Prevention in Illinois is currently under contract with DCFS to provide trainings to youth in care of all ages. These trainings inform youth on how to stay safe and the realties of human trafficking, along with other important topics relevant to trafficking. Why is it so important to our community? It is incredibly
important in the community because Illinois ranks 5th for sex trafficking in the country as of 2024. Areas that are high for sex trafficking within the state are the Northern Chicago area that includes Lake and Cook County. Other areas that are high for trafficking are Rockford, Peoria and Champaign. In Illinois the highest venues for sex trafficking are commercial residentials such as organized brothels and private family homes.

What do you find most fulfilling about what you do? It may sound
strange, but my favorite and most fulfilling part of my job is not being needed anymore. The point of what I do is to help my clients develop these skills and be able to apply them independently, so as bittersweet as it is, the sessions that I remember most fondly are almost always the sessions where we say goodbye, because I know that person is confidently moving forward well-equipped to handle whatever life throws at them.
How are you involved with the community? I work with the Park Ridge chapter of Rainbows for All Children. Additionally, I provide discounted and/ or pro-bono services for low-income families, especially for children with special needs.

10, 9, 8 ... Happy New Year! After Auld Lang Syne plays and we make our way around the room, hugging and kissing our loved ones, it is time to start the new year. A lot of us start by making resolutions or setting goals because starting something new is the perfect opportunity to make a change. Pressing the reset button is a great feeling and gives us hope that no matter how it is today, it can be better tomorrow. I have been wishy-washy on the whole New Year’s resolution thing because, traditionally, I have been a procrastinator. Leading up to New Year’s, it was great because it gave me a reason to put off the change, then after New Year’s, would say things like, “I won’t start today, I’ll start on Monday”, or after my birthday, because

I want to have fun on my birthday. The list of reasons to put off things is endless for a seasoned procrastinator like me. Then, a few years ago, I ran into the archnemesis of a procrastinator, accountability. Accountability in this case came in the form of teenagers (aka my kids). You can’t tell them you are going to do something and not do it; they will call you out, and mine definitely do. I have found the perfect counter to accountability, and that is redemption. I learned that I don’t need a calendar to tell me when to improve. Just because I didn’t start on January 1st, it doesn’t mean I can’t start on March 3rd. So, what I am trying to pass on to my teenagers as they approach young adulthood is: 1. You can change whenever you want to, and 2. It isn’t how you start; it’s how you finish. So, Happy New Year, and I hope you meet all your goals, no matter when you get around to them.

D I D YO U K N OW. . . that one of the early projects of the Park Ridge Improvement Association, founded in 1912, was the installation of street signs? These signs are said to have been made of wood and painted white. As Park Ridge grew, and more tax dollars were available to cover civic needs, the Improvement Association reinvented itself as the 20th Century Club, which still exists today. In 1933, it was reported “that there was a need for street signs in the 3rd Ward.” Council deferred a vote on installation of new signs in the 3rd Ward, requesting that all aldermen “have time to check on the need for street signs in their respective wards.” Cost data for the signs was also requested. (The Park Ridge Herald, 9-15 1933). In 1939, when an area on the northwest side of Park Ridge was asking for mail delivery service to their homes, the postmaster indicate that service could be provided if the city would purchase and install “proper street signs.” (The Park Ridge Herald, 8-11- 1939). The 3-7-1941 Herald reports that 155 new concrete post street signs were installed on arterial streets “financed through the use of gasoline tax funds.” The City proceeded with installation of similar signs at remaining intersections using WPA funds. The WPA project called for “the purchase and installation of 1200 more of the new steel reinforced concrete signs” which were “made by WPA workers in a shed on Meacham Avenue.” Ten feet tall, the posts are set 4’ into the ground. In 1941 all posts had “the embossed street names printed in black thus making the signs more easily read.” (The Park Ridge Herald, 3-7-1941) Nowadays the vertical street signs have green metal attachments with reflective lettering. Did you know that LaGrange has similar street signage? The federal government has since established standards for the “more standard reflective green horizontal signs.” Park Ridge’s vertical concrete signs do not comply. However, for the time being, the current concrete signs will remain in place and “will only be replaced with new horizontal signs if they are damaged.” (The Park Ridge Herald, 2-15-2015)
