October 2026

This month’s issue is filled with so many wonderful stories from around our community. In recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we’re proud to highlight WINGS and its resale shop in Niles, along with the important work WINGS does to support individuals and families impacted by domestic violence. We’re also celebrating the Park Ridge Panhellenic Club and its incredible 90-year history, along with another inspiring Positively Park Ridge feature. And be sure to enjoy our Back-to-School Bash recap and all the photos! What a wonderful time we had bringing families together. We truly love creating these community gatherings at no cost to attend, while giving everyone an opportunity to support a local charity if they choose. Together, through the generosity of our Stroll community, more than $275,000 has been donated to local charities over the years. That is something we can all be proud of. And speaking of community, I’d love to meet you for coffee! If you’ve ever wondered how you can be part of Stroll Park Ridge, have a family story you’d love to share, or know of a local charity or organization we should shine a light on, please reach out. I’m always happy to connect, hear your ideas, and learn more about what matters to you in our community. Coffee is on me! Wishing you a beautiful fall and a very happy and safe Halloween!

PRECIOUS PETS

JOSIE BY RESIDENT DANIEL MICHNIUK

What’s the one trait or behavior that makes your pet stand out from the rest? Josie has the eyes of a movie star. They are a

brilliant green hue.

How long has your family lived in the community? We bought our house one year ago. The sense of community is the best part. What’s your pet’s name, age, sex, and breed / type? Josie is an American Short Haired cat. She turned 10 years old on July 4th this year!

When and how did your pet come to join your family? My wife adopted Josie as a kitten from a Philadelphia radio show host who found her roaming the streets of Allentown, Pennsylvania.

Is there a story behind your pet’s name? Josie’s full name is Josephina. Its regal, just like her.

Does your pet have any unique talents or tricks? She is so fast! She will always catch a fly in her house.

Does your pet have any favorite toys or treats? She loves

You deserve to feel at home in your body again.

catnip (the special farm kind from Kriser’s on NW highway) and the Greenies chicken flavor treats.

Tell us about your favorite memory with your pet. Josie is usually waiting for us to get home which is more of a dog’s trait than a cat. She sits by the window and greets us at the door. Where does your pet love to hang out in the neighborhood? Josie loves to spend time in our backyard meowing at the birds that fly by and lounging on the comfy deck chairs in the sun.

If your pet could choose any adventure to go on, what would it be? She is very content living at home with her family. She has all her favorite things like food, water, treats, a king size bed and good cuddles.

What is your pet’s “pet peeve”? She does not like to be picked up but she loves a good scratch behind the ears.

LIFE IN THE DAD LANE

Not All Heros Wear Capes…They Sit on Hold for Hours and Do Paperwork. BY RESIDENT SCOTT CASTELLANOS

R ECO R DS AN D FO R MS AN D D E AD LI N ES, oh my! My household feels like it has been dominated by administrative tasks for the last year. To be fair, I usually have the easiest job on the admin side. I print whatever needs to be printed, and if it’s tax related, I look up whatever number is pertinent for whatever form is being filled out. The heavy lifting is done overwhelmingly by my wife. I would like to say she has a knack for it and the patience for it, but I won’t because I am sure she has a different take on it and I want to stay out of trouble. Either way, she is the one that gets it done. As many of you know, my oldest just started college and the amount of admin work that came with that was crazy, which I am sure many of you are aware. I did less paperwork when I enlisted into the Marine Corps and utilized my veteran’s benefits combined. A side note from an earlier article- a few tissues were definitely needed after we dropped him off. Honestly, this month I seriously wanted to vent about it all, but it really made me think of how lucky I am to have a partner that not only takes on the tasks, but really did all she could to make sure every rock was turned over, all I’s were dotted and T’s crossed. I know there was frustration with the process and with us along the way, I am sure but, she did it and she continues to do it with love (for the kids not the paperwork). Now the question is, how do we show the proper amount of gratitude for all she has done? For my son, it’s simple; work hard in college and don’t forget to text and call your mom as often as possible. For me, I am sure an occasional foot rub on the couch should just about cover it, right? 22

Park Ridge Halloween, 1980s

H ALLOWE E N I N PAR K R I D G E has always been a time for children to dress up, have fun, and celebrate. These two photos, taken more than 50 years apart, show that tradition in action. From a Halloween contest featuring witches, ghosts, and funky creatures circa 1928 to Power Rangers, Lion King lions, and princesses in the 1980’s. The costumes may have changed over the years, but the tradition of celebrating Halloween together has remained a part of Park Ridge for generations. Have a fun and safe Halloween, Park Ridge! DID YOU KNOW? BY RESIDENT JOAN MATTINGLY

Did you know…….there are several hidden treasures in Park Ridge that help to tell the history of our community? One such treasure is a large brick house hidden behind Atlas Auto Service on Higgins Road. In a book titled Park Ridge, Illinois: A Photo History, this brick home is shown with farm buildings surrounding it and is identified as part of a large dairy farm complex. The book indicates that Higgins Road at that point in time was a “plank road,” paved with wooden planks! The house is now over 100 years old, painted a dark gray color, and still in use. Note the cornice decorations!

WHAT’S COOKIN’ PARK RIDGE?

Julie’s Pumpkin Crescents BY RESIDENT JULIE BLACK

Savor the season with these irresistible Pumpkin Crescents. Resident Julie Black has been making these since 1982 and they have become a family staple. Full of cozy flavor, they’re the perfect addition to any fall or holiday table.

INGREDIENTS:

• 1 package active dry yeast • 1 cup warm water (105-115°) • 1 cup canned pumpkin • ½ cup shortening • ⅓ cup sugar • 1 egg • 1 ½ teaspoons salt • 5-6 cups all-purpose flour • Margarine or butter, softened

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Dissolve yeast in warm water in large bowl. Stir in pumpkin, shortening, sugar, egg, salt, and 3 cups of flour. Beat until smooth. Stir in enough remaining flour to make dough easy to handle. 2. Turn dough onto lightly floured surface; knead until smooth and elastic, about 5 minutes. Place in greased bowl; turn greased side up. Cover; let rise in warm place until double, about 1 hour. Dough is ready if indentation remains when touched. (I always preheat the oven to 350° and then turn it off, let it cool down a bit and place the bowl in the oven with the oven door slightly open for the first rising.) 3. Punch down dough; divide into 3 equal parts. Roll each part into 12-inch circle on floured surface. Spread with margarine; cut into 12 wedges. Roll up tightly beginning at rounded edges. Place rolls with points underneath on greased cookie sheet; curve slightly. Cover each cookie sheet with a kitchen towel and place in warm oven for second rising. Let rise until double, 30-45 minutes. Heat oven to 400°. Bake until golden brown, 15-20 minutes. 32

“I started making the pumpkin crescents for my family for Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners and they immediately became a hit. To this day, our grown kids request them and now make them themselves.” —JULIE BLACK

WINGS Resale Store: Great Finds, Greater Purpose BY KRISTEEN MALDONADO, WINGS RESALE NILES STORE MANAGER

Store manager Kristeen and Sales Associate Michelle highlight a few of the unique finds at WINGS Resale Shop.

O

ctober is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. WINGS is the largest provider of domestic violence services in Illinois. The mission is to provide housing, life changing services, and advocacy to end domestic violence. WINGS Resale’s stores, located in Niles, Arlington Heights, and Schaumburg, provide critical funding and resources for survivors. Resale stores offer donated, high-quality items at affordable prices. Last year nearly three million was generated in sales.

What does WINGS Resale offer? As many survivors flee with only the clothes on their back, Resale provides clothing and other necessities needed within hours of request. Resale also provides furniture and housewares within days and with free delivery. Last year, Resale provided about $68K worth of essentials.

What challenges has WINGS resale encountered along the way? We are

date for our monthly sales (the last full weekend of the month) where our entire store is 50% off. Also, every day select items are 50% off. We are hosting a Sip ‘N Shop one evening in December at WINGS Resale in Niles, stay tuned!

the planet and for those who are on a fixed income or shopping on a budget. However, the most rewarding part is seeing survivors pick out furniture and housewares for their new life. It provides dignity and agency to someone who previously hasn’t had control of different aspects of their life.

When she passed away unexpectedly during her presidency, the club honored her memory by creating a scholarship in her name. How does the club give back? The annual benefit raises funds for scholarships awarded to outstanding young women attending Maine Township high schools. We recognize academic achievement, leadership, and service. The benefit is a celebration of community, mentorship, and the belief that women supporting women can create lasting change. What are some ways community members can support the club and its mission? Today, the club continues to honor its

PARTNER SPOTLIGHT

UPTOWN MED SPA Helping Patients Choose How They Age

The Uptown Team shortly after winning Best of Park Ridge Med Spa 2026.

BY PARK RIDGE RESIDENT & OWNER DR. KATHRYN PODGORNY

Dr. Katie (Left) with nurse MJ, RN.

“If you are looking for a med spa that not only provides some of the greatest and most innovative services, but also professionals who genuinely care about what will work best for you, look no further.” —ERIN E. 40

October 2026

As the owner and founder of Uptown Med Spa, tell us about yourself. I moved to Chicago from North Carolina for medical

school. I earned my medical degree in 2004 and completed my residency in 2008. Our family has lived in Park Ridge for 16 years.

What is your mission? We opened in 2021. Our mission is to help patients look and feel their best. We believe confidence starts from within and our philosophy is “Choose How You Age.” What services do you offer? Bioidentical hormone

replacement therapy, IV hydration, vitamin therapy, peptide therapy, and medical-grade skincare to help patients feel balanced, energized, and healthy. Also, Botox, dermal fillers, Sculptra, and personalized injectable treatments.

What’s unique about your business? We want our patients to look like the best version of themselves. We want to understand their goals, lifestyle, and concerns. Also, we have expanded our focus to include hormone health. My goal is for women in Park Ridge and the surrounding communities to know they don’t have to navigate perimenopause alone. How does your business connect with and contribute to the local community? We proudly support local organizations, school fundraisers, sports teams, silent auctions, and community events, including Stroll. We donate gift cards and skincare baskets to raise money for local causes. Supporting Park Ridge is personal because it is our community too.

Every business faces challenges. Can you share insights into any challenges your business has overcome? Education. With

HOCUS POCUS, LEARNING IS OUR FOCUS!

too much information online, it can be difficult for patients to know what is accurate and safe. That challenge has inspired us to become educators as much as providers.

What’s your vision for the future of your business? Wholeperson wellness. We are passionate about helping women and men feel better, age confidently, and live healthier lives. What advice do you have for our residents? Always make

time for self-care.

The magic goes beyond the classroom this month! Festive learning, seasonal activities, and family traditions like our annual Trunk or Treat make fall a season to remember at Christie’s!

HEALTHY LIVING

ALL IN How maxxing helps form healthier habits. BY NICOLE LETTS

" M AX X ING" is having a moment online, with wellness trends like sleepmaxxing, fibermaxxing, and gymmaxxing all riffing on the same idea: pick one part of life and optimize it as much as possible. The versions gaining real traction skew practical rather than extreme (think blackout curtains and consistent bedtimes for sleepmaxxing, or swapping in more whole grains and lentils for fibermaxxing).

FIND YOUR MAXIMAL SELF Science-based treatments to help ou reclaim your passion and purpose. • Testosterone Health • ED • Peptides • Vitamin Injections • Weight Loss

October 2026

The trend originated with “min-maxing” in gaming, where characters were built for optimized effects. It later took hold on social media as “looksmaxxing,” which unsurprisingly focused on physical appearance before eventually evolving into a gentler cousin of the idea that prioritizes self-care. The overall theme is that “maxxing” is less about quantity and more about quality. Gymmaxxing, for example, encourages consistency in workouts over high-intensity results. Proteinmaxxing follows a similar logic. Rather than chasing protein gram counts with powders and bars, the practical solution means adding one real protein source to a daily diet. For example, incorporating eggs or nuts into a meal that didn't already have protein. The appeal is that “maxxing” turns a single, boring habit into something that feels like a game with a scoreboard. There are many low-lift ways to borrow the "maxxing" mindset to build one small habit at a time. Pick a single, unglamorous target, such as a phone-free hour before bed, a short walk after lunch, one extra glass of water in the afternoon, and repeat it daily. That small, visible win tends to snowball into a habit that sticks.
