PUBLISHER’S NOTE
November
So grateful to you Park Ridge! T HE R E I S SO ME T H I N G ESP EC I ALLY ME AN I N G F U L about sharing the stories of people and organizations that make Park Ridge such a caring community, and this month, we are truly honored to feature Avenues to Independence residents that call the “Obazaki House” their home. Avenues helps adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities live fuller, more independent lives through residential programs, employment opportunities, education and community connection. In this issue, we introduce you to a special group of residents who share a home, friendships and a wonderful sense of community. Their story is a beautiful reminder of the importance of belonging. We are also thrilled to bring you the Third Annual Park Ridge Christmas Stroll and the Park Ridge Santa Stroll on Saturday, December 12. The Christmas Stroll benefits the Kiwanis Club of Park Ridge, with proceeds helping Kiwanis provide mental health kits for students at our local high schools. The Santa Stroll benefits Avenues to Independence. The day will be filled with Christmas fun! Visit Santa at our Stroll offices, transformed into a festive Santa House, and enjoy hot chocolate, caroling and vintage train displays while you wait. At Hodges Park, Elf will be back for some snowball fun. The Christmas Stroll activities are free for families. We created the day so families could simply come together, be present and make memories without the added expense. Donations to the Kiwanis Club of Park Ridge are warmly welcomed. The morning begins with the Santa Stroll 5K, Stroll Mile and Jingle Jog for the kiddos. Registration is required, and participants will receive a T-shirt along with festive Santa or reindeer gear. Be sure to visit our Christmas Trees of Charity, where local nonprofits will decorate trees representing their missions. Vote for your favorite, and the winning charity will receive a $500 donation. Many thanks to Park Ridge Community Church, St. Paul of the Cross, the Park Ridge Park District, the City of Park Ridge, and our major sponsors, Sue Hall at @properties and John Tunnell Insurance Agency, for helping make it all possible. Details for both events are inside this issue. We hope you’ll join us for a day of community, giving and a little Christmas magic. Wishing you and your family a very happy and blessed Thanksgiving. Enjoy the Stroll!

POSITIVELY PARK RIDGE
POSITIVELY PARK RIDGE PERSON OF THE MONTH: Nancy Ciemins Nancy Ciemins has lived in Park Ridge for 13 years and has lent a helping hand to our community since day one. We are proud to call her our Positively Park Ridge Person of the Month!
Tell us about your family. My husband, John, is a neuroradiologist, and my amazing, smart, handsome, and sweet son, Dylan, is a varsity volleyball player and junior at Maine South. We also have two adorable basset hounds, Marley Rae and Roxy Lou.
Who is your inspiration? My wonderful parents. They are loving, caring, and always taking care of everyone. They have inspired my siblings and me to be great parents and giving people. I hope to give my son the same example.
What do you think makes Park Ridge unique? It has a small-town feel but offers so much more.
How have you been involved in the community? I love helping and giving to others. I lend a hand to elderly neighbors and young families with childcare. I belong to a group of women who support our community through donations and volunteering. Last year, we delivered more than 100 wrapped presents to less privileged kids in Chicago. I volunteer for Teacher Appreciation Week and with the nonprofit Lights Out Volleyball. I fight for the less privileged, bullied, and LGBTQIA+ community.
Why do you think community involvement is so important? Always help if you can. You never know when you will be the one who needs help.
What advice would you give newer residents looking to get involved? Volunteer at your children’s schools or church or join local events looking for help.
As a Positively Park Ridge person, what is your advice on how to be a good neighbor or friend? Be open to helping, listening, and sharing your time or what you have.
Scan the QR code to nominate our next Positively Park Ridge Person of the Month.
“Nancy is the first to volunteer with no expectations in return. I’m so thankful for people like her.” Nancy with her son, Dylan and husband, John on vacation. 20

The home has an especially meaningful history. Ed (59), grew up there, and his mother generously donated the family home to Avenues to Independence. Her gift made it possible for Ed to remain in the house he has known his entire life while also creating a home for his housemates, Brendan (50), Rengle (67), and Dan (80). Today, the Okazaki House is a place where the four residents can enjoy friendship, independence, community involvement, and the support they need to live full and active lives. Their story also reflects Avenues’ deep roots in Park Ridge and its

longstanding commitment to helping adults with disabilities live, work, grow, and belong within their communities.
Where do the residents work? Ed, Rengle, and Brendan attend the Center for Independence in Wheeling, where they participate in day programs designed to build skills and prepare participants for opportunities in community employment. Their days also include activities such as art, music, Zumba, and cooking classes. These programs give participants opportunities to develop new skills, explore their interests, socialize with others, and continue building greater independence.
What are their interests and hobbies? Ed loves to dance and takes weekly classes at Arthur Murray Dance Studio. He also participates in Maine-Niles Association of Special Recreation (M-NASR) activities, including bowling and track and field, and attends Our Lady of Ransom. Brendan enjoys sports, video games, board games, bowling, volleyball, and M-NASR activities.
Dinner is a team effort, with Ed happily helping in the kitchen.
Ed and Brendan enjoy a little friendly competition over a game of Titanic: The Board Game.
Rengle enjoys relaxing at home with a favorite movie or television show and also likes going bowling. Like any household, each resident has individual interests and favorite activities, but spending time together and participating in the community are an important part of life at the Okazaki House.
What are your favorite places to visit around the community? The Sandlot, Starbucks in uptown, Jewel on Busse Hwy and Walgreens on Touhy.
Do you participate in any social activities or events in the neighborhood? * Ed attends church at Our Lady of Random. Dan attends church at United Methodist Church and the Fourth of July fireworks at Maine East as well as the Taste of Park Ridge.

wonderful example of what an inclusive community can look like: neighbors knowing one another, taking part in community life, and creating opportunities for everyone to belong. As Thanksgiving approaches, the Okazaki House reminds us that home is about far more than a house. It is friendship, shared meals, laughter, and having people to count on. Family can take many forms, and for Ed, Brendan, Rengle, and Dan, having a place to call home and people to share it with is something to be thankful for every day.
“My favorite part about living here is the people. I like going to work with my housemates, playing games, and talking with people.” - Ed Rawkski
How will the residents celebrate Thanksgiving together? Thanksgiving at the Okazaki House will include a family-style dinner and festive decorations, with help from Avenues staff. The celebration is made even more special through the generosity of Jewel on Busse Highway, which donates Thanksgiving dinner for the residents. It is a tradition that brings everyone around the table and gives the house an opportunity to celebrate the holiday together. Rengle says: ““I am looking forward to spending time with my friends and housemates, staff, and eating good food for Thanksgiving.”
Personalized Treatments. Natural Results.
What makes the Okazaki House feel like home? Rengle says: “My friends. It’s nice and clean, and I like my house and my recliner.” Ed says: “I am proud of being friends with people. All of the barbeques and going out with people makes my house fun. I like when we go out to eat together.” Their answers capture something simple but important: home is often about the people you share it with, the friendships you build, and the everyday moments that become traditions.

What would you like your Park Ridge neighbors to know about you? Rengle says: “We’re nice and we’re good friends.” Ed says: “I enjoy living in a nice, quiet neighborhood and all the activities in the community. I would like to be involved in more Park Ridge community activities.” For neighbors who may not be familiar with Avenues to Independence, the residents of the Okazaki House offer a

DID YOU KNOW? BY RESIDENT JOAN MATTINGLY
Existing Brick & Mortar building built by George Penny.
Did you know... That there are lots of hints of Park Ridge history all around us? Do you know the white BRICK & MORTAR building on Northwest Highway uptown? That building, constructed of Brickton brick, was built by George Penny to be a store and our community’s post office. We owe a great deal to George Penny! He and his partner, Robert

Meacham, opened a brickyard, which at its height, manufactured 5,000,000 bricks annually. The community was for a time called Pennyville in Penny’s honor, but the name was changed to Brickton. In 1873 the community was re-named Park Ridge. Mr. Penny arranged for the railroad to create a stop in PR to haul his bricks. Would life be different if there was no Metra stop here? The train depot
facilitated the growth of Brickton. Some built summer homes, away from the heat, noise and smells of Chicago. After the Chicago Fire, George Carpenter, among others, moved their families to Brickton to live permanently. He had a large home facing Northwest Highway. In 1873, a city government was formed with a President and Trustees. Carpenter was the first President.

PRECIOUS PETS
What’s the one trait or behavior that makes your pet stand out from the rest? LilyBear is a Whoodle, (a Soft-Coated
Wheaton Terrier and Mini-Poodle mix). Wheaton’s are known for their “Wheaton Greetin’” and that is LilyBear. Everyone who comes to our house is for her - UPS, the dry cleaner, Amazon, the girls friends, our neighbors and LilyBear believes you have arrived just so she can give you licks, likely jump, and throw her ball or play tug!
What do you and your pup like most about living in Park Ridge? LilyBear has made many dog friends and loves going to the
Park Ridge Farmer’s Market. She loves walking around Fairview and Cumberland then heading to Mushy Face in the market to get treats for the week! Park Ridge has a special feel to it.
When and how did your pet come to join your family?
Meet Lilybear the Whoodle! BY RESIDENT GWEN ORTEGA
You deserve to feel at home in your body again.
LilyBear joined our family as a Covid dog - we got her in July 2020. She was a great companion to have when the world was locked down and provided motivation to get outside each day.
How did you com up with Lilybear’s name? When she was a puppy she looked like a little bear which sounded close to LilyBear and it stuck. Does your pet have any favorite toys or treats? LilyBear loves mini tennis balls and any stuffed animal that squeaks!
Tell us about your favorite memory with your pet. Our daughters, Sofia and Sienna, were born in April 2023, and their friendship with Lilybear is so touching. It was a bumpy road at first, especially when they would pull on her fur, but once they learned how to share their food with her, their friendship exploded! When the girls were 2.5 years old they had the idea that we were all going to be Lilybear for Halloween! Most people guessed they were sheep but sure enough, we were all Whoodles! Are there any local businesses or parks your pet particularly enjoys visiting? LilyBear loves going to
NorthEast Park by Field school, the Park Ridge Farmer’s Market, and enjoys a Pup Cup at Starbucks.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Outreaching efforts by Sandy Godinez, Jessica Wright, and Melody Rose at the Park Ridge Pride celebration.
The Harbour - Providing Hope, Building Futures BY STROLL STAFF AND THE HARBOUR PROGRAM DIRECTORJESSICA WRIGHT
For more than 50 years, The Harbour has helped over 5,500 youth facing homelessness and instability. It’s a growing crisis in both urban areas and suburban communities, and can be related to abuse, conflicts, violence, trafficking, and rejection of LGBTQ+ identities. In recognition of November’s National Youth Homelessness, Outreach, Prevention, and Education (HOPE) Month, Program Direction Jessica Wright tells us more about The Harbour’s mission.
What types of services does The Harbour offer? Transitional housing,
education assistance, medical needs, mental health support, and year-round trauma-informed care. Also, life skills such as job readiness, financial literacy, cooking classes, and tutoring.
What inspired you to dedicate your time and effort to the Harbour? My
passion for working with young people started early in my career and I was compelled to work alongside populations that are too often overlooked. I grew up in a rural area, and The Harbour did not

exist in my community. That experience drives my desire to ensure all young people know they have a trusting place to turn.
What challenges have you encountered and how have you overcome them? Cuts in grants, government funding and SNAP and Medicaid changes. However, we now have a Youth Advisory Board (YAB) who participate in Lobby Day at the state legislature in Springfield to advocate directly with lawmakers. YAB also hosts voter registration drives to get more youth ready to vote in the mid-term elections.
How have your efforts positively impacted our community? I’ve had Jessica unpacks cleaning supply donations given to The Harbour.

LIFE IN THE DAD LANE
Food, Football and…Fir Trees BY RESIDENT SCOTT CASTELLANOS
T
here’s a crisp in the air, leaves on the ground, football on the TV and at some point, a turkey on my table. It’s that special time of the year between mowing the lawn and shoveling snow (hopefully). It’s Fall, or Autumn or whatever you like to call it, and the calendar says Thanksgiving’s coming, and family gettogethers/ activities will be front and center. This means my wife will be extra happy because she’s surrounded by loved ones. My kids will be happy because they’re hanging out with cousins. Grizz, our dog, is happy because the little ones are dropping food on the floor, and I am happy because this is when so many of my favorite family traditions kick in. Since it’s turkey day, that, of course, means food and one of my favorite menu
48
November 2026
items is cornbread. Not because I am a cornbread enthusiast or anything, but because it was a Thanksgiving dish I made for years and around ten years ago, my boys took over. I love that they do it together and that they use my recipe. I may not be as involved in the actual prep anymore, but it does make me feel connected, and I hope they continue making it when they have their own families. One of the biggest events is something we did not start doing as a whole family until we had kids, and that is our family Turkey Bowl on Thanksgiving morning. The game has grown, as our families have grown. The teams consist of family and friends, including broken-down, out-ofshape old timers, like me, all the way to preschoolers. The smack talk is epic, and the laughs are non-stop. Lastly, is cutting down our Christmas tree. I love it, because the Castellanos crew loads up in the minivan, heads out into the country with a saw in hand and claims our trophy to decorate and display in our front window for the next month or so. Ok, that may have been a little dramatic, but it does make me feel pretty cool to cut my own tree down.
