FEBRUARY THOUGHTS

The snow may fall and blow

But there is one thing I know February brings sweet joy

To every girl and boy

Knowing Valentines will come filling hearts with love

But there are other special days too that touch us all in everything we do

George Washington fought a war of independence and more

He led by example showing the way people could be free to this very day

He was offered a leader’s crown but after eight years stepped down a man of his times with a few flaws

But he lead us in a righteous cause

We celebrate him still you see because he fought for all our liberty for decades after he was gone America’s leaders carried on Adams, Madison, Jefferson

Steering the cause of true freedom wars came again to try to part democracy from it’s fragile start

The worst in our history

Civil war that split America’s family Abraham Lincoln answered the call

That held the union from it’s fall

He held that all people were equal when he freed all from slavery calling us to be the best we could be

165 More years have passed

Yet those leaders ideas have lasted

Terrible wars have come and gone more challenges, yet we carried on America has swung left and right as we all go through dark of night

Having faith in the morning light so we honor Lincoln on the twelfth

And Washington the twenty second

We named our schools for them both they are honored among the most

So President’s Day is not just a day off but a day to remember the cost

Of the freedom we all share

Because Washington and Lincoln were there!

Come out and enjoy a good craic! Another year of fun, corned beef & cabbage, music, Irish Dancers and more! A suggested $25 donation will be collected at the door to benefit Kiwanis Club of Park Ridge. Please rsvp to Strollparkridgeevents@gmail.com Join us for the wearin’ o’ the green! Everyone Needs to Realize Why Estate Planning Matters

According to a survey by NAEPC Journal of Estate; Tax Planning two-thirds of Americans don’t have a will or any other form of estate plan in place. This means that over 60% of adults are leaving the fate of their assets, dependents, and healthcare decisions up to the state. There are several reasons why Americans delay their estate planning.

Misunderstanding the Need: Too many people believe estate planning is only for the wealthy. The truth is if you have children, property, or assets—no matter the size—an estate plan is essential. The NAEPC survey highlighted that nearly 70% of Americans think estate planning is only for those with significant wealth.

Incomplete Plans: The NAECP survey revealed that over 30% of people who begin estate planning never complete it by signing their documents, making their plans legally invalid. Often, this happens because they get stuck on the final steps or don’t have access to a notary or witnesses when they need them.

Procrastination and Fear: Some people avoid thinking about end-of-life planning because it feels uncomfortable or overwhelming. Others simply believe they have plenty of time. But life is unpredictable, and without a plan, your family could face lengthy legal battles and added stress.

Complexity and Cost: Traditional estate planning can seem intimidating and expensive, often involving multiple meetings with attorneys and costs that can easily run into the thousands. According to the American Bar Association, many are deterred by the high cost.

Healthcare and Advance Directives: Nearly 40% of Americans over age 55 don’t have an advance healthcare directive, leaving their healthcare wishes unclear if they become incapacitated.

Everyone should recognize the importance of creating an estate plan. Unfortunately, without this crucial step, people leave their loved ones vulnerable and unprotected. Let us help you get started. If you already have one started, bring it in for review and updating and we will be sure it is legally binding. Contact Anthony J. Madonia & Associates at info@madonia.com or (312) 578-9300.

WHAT’S COOKIN’ PARK RIDGE?

Tamra’s Greek Sheet Pan Chicken

Savor

INGREDIENTS

“This is a great recipe for a busy weeknight because you can do all the vegetable chopping prep the night before and put in a ziplock bag until ready to cook. I really like this recipe because you can swap out the vegetables and use what you like or have on hand. You can also swap out the Chicken pieces you like I use bonein skin on thighs.”

• 1 Package Chicken Thighs ( bone-in, skin on)

• 2 medium Zucchini medium chopped

• 2 Peppers (Red and Orange) medium chopped

• 1 medium Red Onion medium chopped

• 1 Yellow Crook Neck Squash

FLAVOR

• 1 jar Marinated Artichoke Heart, drained

• 1/2 cup Kalamata Olives

• 1/2 cup Crumbled Feta Cheese

• 1 Cup Grape Tomatoes

• 1/2 Cup your favorite Greek Vinaigrette (my favorite is Strompolos Authentic Greek Dressing)

• Salt & Pepper to taste

• 2T Oregano

• 2T Chopped Parsley

*Recipe serves 4*

PREP WORK

2 / Place in a bowl with the Greek Dressing and 1T Oregano and set aside.

3 / On a large 18x13 Sheet Pan place the chicken pieces. Salt and pepper and sprinkle both sides with 1T oregano.

4 / Arrange the vegetables around the chicken and bake at 350 for 40 minutes.

5 / After 40 minutes add the artichoke, olives and tomatoes, feta cheese and bake until the chicken is cooked through 165 degrees.

6 / When the sheet pan comes out of the oven sprinkle with the chopped parsley.

7 / Enjoy.

Family member names: Ben Backsmeier, Jennifer Backsmeier, Jordan Rosa (15), Joshua Backsmeier (6), Jacqueline Backsmeier (3), Athena (dog)

Street: Hoffman Avenue.

How long have you lived in Park Ridge? Since 2017.

Is there anything your neighbors might know you for?

On our front wrap around porch we routinely hang a variety of flags ranging from the US Flag, Army Football, Chicago Cubs, and Maine South Football. The flags rotate with the seasonal sports teams we cheer to victory.

Many neighbors know that Ben graduated from West Point due to our many banners, flags, and cheering on during the annual Army-Navy football game.

How long have you been with your spouse and how did you meet? Ben and Jennifer met while both working for the same company. They were married in Park Ridge in 2018, shortly after moving to the community.

What are your professions: Ben Backsmeier is a Major in the United States Army Reserves. Additionally, he is a Vice President at Medcor, an occupational healthcare company running the Telehealth business

division. Jennifer is an Associate at JP Morgan Chase where she works in Global Banking. She oversees internal procedures and process reviews ensuring banking compliance.

Tell us about your kids. Jordan Rosa is a sophomore at Maine South High School where he plays football and baseball for the Hawks. Jordan also plays travel baseball for the Bo Jackson’s Sparks. Joshua is a first grader at Franklin Elementary and is active in Park Ridge baseball and flag football. Jacqueline is in PreK at Kiddie Academy Park Ridge and is active in the Park District tumbling and dance programs.

Tell us something interesting, unique, or unusual about your family. Although we are a proud military family, most neighbors may not know it. Ben’s military service began before our marriage and Jennifer continues to keep the family running from event to event while away on military orders. Jennifer’s father, Jerry, is a proud Marine Corps veteran. Adam, Ben’s brother, continues to serve in the Marine Corps Reserves. Both Ben’s grandfathers served in the United States Air Force and Marine Corps. Jennifer’s uncle and grandfather both served in the United States Army.

Describe your perfect day in Park Ridge as a family. Our perfect day begins with heading to the Park Ridge Farmer’s Market to get fresh donuts, seasonable vegetables, and our favorite local honey. We spend the morning attending our children’s activities at one of the variety of parks across town. We head to Easy Street Pizza for dinner. We end the evening jumping on our trampoline and roasting s’mores in the backyard.

Favorite Park Ridge Restaurant? Easy Street Pizza

Favorite Park Ridge Park? Prospect Park

Favorite Park Ridge historic establishment: Pickwick Theater, we love the Art Deco.

Are you passionate about any charities? Ben Backsmeier is a Board member of Orion Military Scholarships. Orion Military Scholarships supports active duty military families by providing support and continuity to military children through the opportunity to attend partner boarding schools. Jennifer is active in JP Morgan Chase’s internal military spouse, and veteran business resource groups. Our family is active in supporting military family and veteran nonprofits.

Are you involved in the community at all? Our family is active in Park Ridge Baseball, Park Ridge Football, and members of the St. Andrews Lutheran Church.

A STROLL DOWN MEMORY LANE

“It Tastes Better!”

“IT TASTES BETTER!” Some readers may remember the familiar jingle for Brown’s Chicken, a popular carryout restaurant located at 960 Busse Highway. From humble 1949 beginnings in a Bridgeview trailer, it spread as a franchise with wide appeal in northern Illinois and locations across the U.S. The brainchild of farmer John Brown and his wife Belva, Brown’s became a favorite stop for hungry Park Ridge residents, and was an employer for many local high school students. The author was one of those workers. He met farmer Brown, as well as Frank Portillo (yes, that Portillo – a brother) when the two businessmen became partners in the early 70s.

I DON’T THINK FEBRUARY is a popular month, it’s cold, it’s short, and has us longing for better things to come. I have never heard anyone say, I can’t wait for February, and for most of my life, it was always the least busy time of the year. We were generally between sports, the weather had us stuck indoors, and we were on the edge of our seats waiting for spring to arrive. However now, as I review my ever-filled calendar, I notice that the shortest of months has me quite busy and as I step back a bit further, I realize that February is quite the month, and pound for pound, it stacks up with any other month in the year. Personally, I have plenty to look forward to, my oldest son’s birthday and my youngest son’s basketball season take up a huge piece of the calendar, so my dance card starts full. Zooming out a bit further though, I see that February offers fun for the masses. I won’t get into the silly National Days of fill-in-the-blank, although if you’re a

Meet Joe Breisch owner of Northwind Exteriors

MY NAME IS JOE BREISCH and I grew up in River Grove as the youngest of three boys. We were active and competitive, with supportive parents who taught us to work hard and be respectful. I attended East Leyden High School and studied business and marketing at St. Norbert College, where I played football for four years.

I met my wife, Jacqueline, before my senior year of college in 2009, and we’ve been together ever since. We moved back to the suburbs 12 years ago, got married, and started our family. We live in Rosemont with our children, Aiden (8) and Everly (5), and our dog Maisy (11). Everly was diagnosed with Type1 diabetes and celiac disease at age 2, which requires constant care. Despite these challenges, she remains resilient, and our family is committed to giving her a normal life.

My career has always been rooted in construction and marketing. After working in various roles, I found my passion in sales at ABC Supply, focusing on roofing and siding. This experience led me to start Northwind Exteriors, a company dedicated to providing highquality materials and expert installation with integrity.

Northwind Exteriors played a significant role in helping the Park Ridge community after last year’s hailstorm. We provided storm damage inspections, guided residents through the insurance claim process, and ensured that high-quality roofing and siding systems were installed. Unlike other contractors, we use impactrated Malarkey shingles to help homeowners avoid future damage from similar storms.

At Northwind, we strive to make home improvement easy and stress-free. We offer instant roof quotes online and provide personalized estimates for siding projects, all without highpressure sales tactics. Our goal is to help homeowners love their homes again.

In addition to my work with Northwind, I am a co-owner of Velocity Cabinet Supply, offering custom cabinets, countertops, & more. I’m passionate about giving back to the community, coaching youth sports teams, and sponsoring local events in Park Ridge and Rosemont. I am grateful for the support of my family and community, and I hope to continue helping homeowners with their projects for years to come!

Family Members: Rachel (Mom) and Jeremiah (Dad)

Is your pet an angel or a bit of a troublemaker or spoiled? He is spoiled! He always wants to be with his humans, he loves car rides and visiting people. People say “he’s so handsome.” and he would reply “I know”.

Does your pet have any specific talents or tricks? He knows his basic commands: sit, stay, rollover, but is also obsessed with puzzle toys.

Is there anything other neighbors or pets would know your pet for? He is always out and about and walking around the neighborhood, visiting the Farmer’s Market in the summer/fall, eating at dog friendly patio’s and shopping at dog friendly stores.

How would your pet tell the story of the day they met you and your human family? It was a scary situation being away from the place he was born but he knew his new humans loved him and would take care of him forever. Once they brought him back to the house, he saw his new little pen surrounded by toys and his humans got on the floor to play with

him he realized it wasn’t so scary. By that night he was spread across his bed snoring away.

Has your pet ever run away or gotten into trouble? Never. He’s a mama’s boy through and through and stuck to his humans like glue. The closest he gets to trouble is tearing up his new stuffed toys (that’s what they are there for).

What are his personality traits? He is extremely confident and so incredibly stubborn, very social, adventurous, noisy, opinionated, very loving and clingy. He loves to sit on a human’s lap.

What is your pet’s favorite Park Ridge park? Hodges Park because there are always people around to give him attention and lots of places to sniff.

What is his pet peeve? He has many pet peeves. Some are: being told it’s time to go back inside, a mediocre leg hammock for sleeping, going shopping and nobody pays attention to him, when mom takes too long getting ready for a walk and being inside all day.

Mar’s Bars

I SPECIALIZE IN a variety of freshly baked delicious bars and tasty shortbread cookies - no fork needed! I work personally with clients to customize the flavors, varieties and presentation of each order.

How long have you been in business?

I officially launched Mar’s Bars in August 2022.

What prompted you to start your own business? I have always loved to bake and share treats with friends and family. For many years, I donated gift certificates for my homemade desserts to school fundraisers and local charity events. Friends always said I should start a baking business and I decided to give it a go!

How did you decide on this industry? I work as an assistant principal and while I love my day job, baking is a stress-relieving activity for me. I want to make entertaining easy and have customers enjoy my fresh desserts rather than buying something with additives and preservatives that has been sitting on a grocery store shelf.

How long have you lived in the community? My husband Mark and I moved to Park Ridge almost 30 years ago and have loved raising our kids, Elizabeth and Griffin, here.

Does your business support any local charities? I frequently offer my desserts as a silent auction item for such groups as the Maine South

Parents Scholarship Club, Park Ridge Newcomers Labor of Love, On Your Feet Foundation, Baby Spirit Foundation, etc. I truly love supporting these local organizations who are helping others in need, while also sharing my desserts with even more people.

How can residents contact you?

I am on Facebook (Mar’s Bars and other sweet treats) and Instagram (Marsbarsinpr). I can also be reached at marsbarsinpr@outlook.com

Do you have a business you would like to feature? Send us an email at Strollparkridge@gmail.com

Thank you Mar’s Bars for your very generous donation of your bars to the bake sale at the Christmas STROLL.
