Park Ridge

Local Artist captures the magic of Christmas in Uptown Park Ridge
“A Christmas Stroll in Park Ridge” was drawn and painted by local artist and art teacher Natalie Whalen. Natalie enjoys drawing and painting, and loves to share that passion with her students. “I’ve been drawing and painting for as long as I can remember. Art has been a constant in my life. It’s something that I can never master; I will always be learning about new artists, styles, and media. That infinite quality is what excites and inspires me,” Whalen said. She has murals at Lurie Children’s Hospital, Stroger Hospital, and in various pediatric offices, retail stores, restaurants, schools and private homes. What was fun about making this piece of art for the Christmas Stroll? I love art that brings you into it. You can see yourself in the scene and can feel the cold, see the
glowing lights, and feel the warmth of the season. Once a painting gets to that point, it becomes more complete and it’s really fun to create.
What inspired you to accept this request? I love whimsical illustration and watercolor is my favorite medium. Christmas is such a warm and happy time so as soon as I found out about the Christmas Stroll idea, I immediately had visions in my head! I was inspired for the Christmas Stroll art by my children. They are getting older now, 12 and 13, and I miss their younger days when Christmas was so exciting and mysterious. The anticipation on Christmas Eve was so thrilling and seeing their faces on Christmas morning was the best.
We are so excited and thrilled to feature Natalie’s artwork of our beautiful Park Ridge. No other artwork of its kind better captures the magic and whimsy of the holiday season here in our town. Stroll Park Ridge Publisher Dolly McCarthy commissioned Ms. Whalen this past summer to begin the project in the hopes of capturing a Norman Rockwell moment in our town and Natalie exceeded expectations. Many thanks to Natalie for dedicating her time and sharing her talents for all to enjoy this beautiful piece! You can get your own signed copy of “A Christmas Stroll in Park Ridge” on December 14th at the Park Ridge Community Church for $10. Meet Natalie from 12-1 PM. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to Kiwanis Club of Park Ridge.

A FAVORITE TRADITION for my family every holiday season is to gather around the TV together, pop some corn and watch Christmas movies. White Christmas, It’s a Wonderful Life, anything on the Hallmark channel, and of course, who could miss National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation?! As the holidays approach, Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase) wants to have a perfect

family Christmas. Clark tries to make sure everything is in line, including the tree and house decorations despite his continual bad luck. Poor Clark....
The holidays just wouldn’t be complete without the traditions we hold dear.
Whether it’s watching holiday movie favorites, baking Christmas cookies, building a gingerbread house, decorating a tree, or participating in an ugly sweater competition, all traditions give us time to pause and cherish time with family, friends and community.
Stroll Park Ridge is about to present an event that we hope will become

Enjoy the sights and sounds of the season with your broader family - our Park Ridge community. We have been busy planning, preparing, setting up and coordinating a grand Christmas Stroll for all! Like Clark Griswold, we have had some hiccups, a few shorted lights, but unlike poor Clark, we have had a lot of community support and enthusiasm and we are ready for you Park Ridge! Pignoli cookies are an Italian tradition made at Christmas time. The volcanic soil in southern Italy produces some of the world’s best almonds and pine nuts. This makes this dish especially popular in the southern regions like where our family is from in Calabria. This is a cookie our family bakes every year!
INGREDIENTS:
• 2 boxes of almond paste
• 2 egg whites
• 1 cup of sugar
• Pine nuts for topping
DIRECTIONS:
1 / Preheat oven to 350 degrees
These cookies are so simple with only 4 ingredients but are bursting with flavor. This is a recipe for any level of baker and is fun to make with your kids to create memories year after year.
From our family to yours, Buon Natale & buon appetito!
— MARY MERANDA

3 / Form into 1.5 inch balls and place onto baking sheet
4 / Then pick up and roll the dough in your bowl of pine nuts to coat the top of the cookie and place back onto baking sheet
5 / Take a small glass and press down to flatten the cookie
6 / Place in the oven and bake for 15 minutes
7 / Let cool before transferring

Street you live on: Bonita Drive
School you attend and grade you’re in: I am in 6th grade at Mary, Seat of Wisdom.
What sports do you play? I’m an equestrian who rides horses multiple times a week all year long. I have been riding for 3.5 years.
What inspired you to get started with your chosen sport? I’m always trying to learn new things and find new interests. When I found out a friend of mine was taking riding lessons, I thought it would be fun to try too. My parents surprised me with lessons for my next birthday and I fell in love with horses and riding.
What is your riding style? I ride English style and spend most of my time working on jumping courses, but I’ve also tried dressage and even horse vaulting. This year, I joined an
Interscholastic Equestrian Association team through my riding stable that will allow me to participate in several horse shows this year.
What do you enjoy most when riding? Spending time with my favorite animal. Riding makes me happy and it has helped me to become more confident in what I can do.
What is your proudest moment? My proudest moment was earning my first 1st place ribbon in a horse show.
Who do you have to thank for helping you get there? I am thankful for my trainers and for my mom, who is there for every practice and every show, supporting me 100%, giving me feedback, and working hard to give me the best opportunities to reach my dreams.
Who is someone you admire? I admire my former trainer, Tina Sommer, because she followed her dreams and opened up her own riding school, and that’s something I hope to do someday.
What advice do you have for others looking to get into your chosen sport? When you fall, dust yourself off and get back up again.
Beyond sports, what do you like to do? I love to read and have my own personal library of over 400 books. I also have my own beading business and love to paint and cook.
If you were to continue riding, what do you hope to accomplish someday? I hope to compete in the Olympics someday, and maybe even become the first female jockey to win the Kentucky Derby.

Administering a trust or an estate is an important responsibility. In addition to keeping track of all relevant assets, income and expenses, executors must honor the interests of the beneficiaries while still grieving themselves. To help ease the situation, review these common mistakes and avoid them when possible.
1 / Consider Carrying Costs
Carrying costs can quickly accumulate and eat away at the value of an estate. The executor should ensure that ongoing costs such as property taxes, insurance and lawn care or snow removal are met, while acting decisively to liquidate assets that cost the estate money.
2 / Failure to Consider Opportunity Costs
There are opportunity costs to leaving assets in an estate. Inflation will inevitably diminish the value of assets held in an
estate. A prudent executor will work quickly to gather and distribute all assets.
3 / Sentimentality Clouding Decision Making
As the executor of a loved one’s estate, you will need to process your own grief while also making practical decisions. It may be helpful to think of your role as an executor as a professional responsibility.
4 / Not Hiring Professional Help
Many individuals adopt a “do it yourself” approach to administering an estate instead of hiring professionals, such as accountants, appraisers, lawyers, and contractors. If you unknowingly violate building codes, miss deadlines, or simply fail to acquire necessary licenses or permits, beneficiaries may seek to impose liability.
5 / Watch the Calendar
Be sure to keep track of tax filing dates, real estate cycles, and seasonal costs. For most clients, filing estate and trust income tax returns on a calendar year (vs. fiscal year) basis makes the most sense.
Navigating the path between action and careful consideration can prove tricky without the guidance of a seasoned professional. To better understand the process, contact Anthony J. Madonia & Associates, Ltd. at (312) 578-9300 or info@madonia.com.
BY RESIDENT NOMI (AND ROSEMARY) WOLFE
Breed: I am a rescue dog and I am mostly Yorkie.
Age: 4 1/2 years old.
Family members names: John, Rosemary, Josie and Evie Wolfe.
Street you live on: Park Plaine Ave.
Please introduce yourself: My family adopted me from Woof Gang Rescue Animal Shelter in Wisconsin. My family was really desperate for a dog, and they found out I was up for adoption from my mom’s friend here in Park Ridge. That family adopted my brother, so there are two of us in Park Ridge! My family drove 2 hours to meet me the first time to see if they were a good match for me, and boy was it love at first sight! I am a social dog. I LOVE to say hi to everyone when I’m on walks. I have the biggest “smile” when people stop to say hi and pet me. If you say “cheese,” I’ll smile even bigger! It almost looks like I’m mad when I smile because I’m showing so many of my teeth, but that couldn’t be farther from the truth.
Is your pet an angel or a bit of a troublemaker? I am very spoiled. I even get steak mixed in with my dog food. For the most part, I am a VERY good dog, but I can get in trouble once in a while when I’m not getting enough attention. I’ve been known to piddle on the rugs. My mom does NOT like when I do that, but she still loves me! I can win anyone over with my charm and cuteness-no one can get mad at me.
Does your pet have any specific talents or tricks? I am very motivated by treats, and will happily perform my tricks (I can sit and stay, give paw, lay down and I’m working on waving and rolling over).
Is there anything other neighbors or pets would know your pet for? I love my neighborhood! My girlfriend Winnie, lives a block away, we sometimes go on walks, and I love to say high to my friends Luna, Monty and Sammy to name a few. My best friend is Alfred, and he is the dog
of the lady that takes care of my when my family goes out of town. She always takes us on long walks and gets us my favorite treat-pup cups!
Has your pet ever run away or gotten into trouble? I have ran away a couple of times, and my owners always catch me. I think we are playing a fun game of chase, but my family doesn’t think it is a game! One time I made it like half mile away down the train tracks. My mom was so upset when she finally caught me! It was 20 degrees outside and she was very cold and out of breath. I would never run away for good, I love them so much. It’s just that my curiosity gets the best of me. I’m so grateful for my family - their love, pets, treats and comfy beds!
What is Nomi’s favorite Park Ridge park? Maine Park

With the holiday season upon us, it’s easy to get swept up in the rush of gifting, party planning and that endless to-do list. But the true magic of this time of year isn’t found in perfectly wrapped presents or extravagant gatherings — it’s in the connections we build and nurture with the people in our lives who matter most.
Human connection is more than simply a feel-good sentiment; it’s essential to our emotional and physical well-being, especially during the holidays.
BY SHAUNA OSBORNE, NATIONAL EDITOR
In a season where the focus often shifts to material gifts, one of the most valuable things you can offer is your attention.
There’s something profoundly bonding about sitting around a table with loved ones, enjoying a meal and savoring each other’s company. Whether a traditional holiday feast or a cozy weeknight dinner, these shared moments foster a sense of belonging and togetherness. Take time to slow down, be present and engage with your guests. Make meal preparation a collaborative effort — invite friends or family to cook with you, allowing for spontaneous discussions and laughter.
In a season where the focus often shifts to material gifts, one of the most valuable things you can offer is your attention. Engage in thoughtful conversations that go beyond small talk; ask open-ended questions, share stories and listen deeply. These heartfelt exchanges can open doors to greater understanding and connection, reminding us of the joy found in simply being with one another.
Sometimes, the simplest gestures can make the biggest difference. Next time you’re grabbing a holiday treat for yourself, think of someone else who might appreciate it, too — pick up an extra muffin or coffee for a coworker or neighbor and watch their face light up with surprise and gratitude. Use your downtime, like sitting in traffic, to reach out to loved ones with a quick call or message. Even a brief checkin can make someone feel valued and remembered this time of year.

RIDGE POETRY
BY RESIDENT PAUL HANSEN
Christmas memories for me begin so long ago
Thoughts of those holidays always included snow
An advent calendar made by me in kindergarten
As I opened each for a difficult word picture within
We learned early all those Christmas songs
And throughout the season we would sing along
We learned of baby Jesus who came to save us all
I also learned of Santa bringing gifts for little Paul I tried to be a good boy, good as I could be
Hoping that Santa would bring a train for me
In those early days only one gift for each child
Santa seemed forgiving even for the wild
I remember what the others got to this very day
There were doll houses, dolls, trucks and cars
Pretend phone switchboards, and microscopes too
Globes, and chemistry sets, oh what they could do
Lincoln Logs, and buggies, and what do you know
One year Tommy even got a real bow with arrows
Another year Mike got a telescope to see the stars
Then the toy gun sets for we cowboys riding far Army sets were also a big deal for many a year
Forts and tanks, canons and jeeps parked near Pedal cars that we could sit in and drive around Bikes, wagons, and scooters we rode all over town
But the best gift that we all did receive
Was the magic of the season we all did believe
The magic was so special and still is today
It has kept the child in me alive so I can say With all the childhood innocence with great delight MERRY CHRISTMAS to all and to all a good night!!

Professions: Mike works in transportation and logistics at a company called Forward Air as a Vice President of Sales and Strategy. I spent about 11 years working as a Clinical Social Worker in private practice working with kids and young adults, but at this time I am a stay at home mama.
How long have you been with your spouse? Mike and I have been together since 2010. We were married in July of 2013.
How did you meet? We met when Mike was working in the same office with my aunt. She introduced us and the rest is history!
Tell us about your kids. Our 2 girls, Luca and Violet, attend 4th and 2nd grade at Field School. Luca is on the Junior Team, while Violet is on the Mini Team, for Park Ridge Competitive Cheer and they both participate in Flag Football. In addition to this, Luca also plays travel soccer with FC Stars. Leo is in a Pre-K classroom at both Park Ridge Park District Preschool and Jefferson Preschool. He plays t-ball through the Park District, and is patiently waiting until next year when we can play football! As a family, we spend a lot of time cheering one another on at whichever sporting event one of the kids is in. When we’re not doing that, you can usually find us hanging out with friends and neighbors or walking over to Uptown for some dinner at a yummy restaurant! We also really love to travel places together. Whether it’s somewhere that’s a close drive, or a long plane ride, we enjoy getting to take a trip and spend time as a family.
Are you involved in the community at all? In addition to staying at home with the kiddos, I am one of the Directors of Park Ridge Spirit Cheer. My dear friend, Shannon Hickey, runs it with me and we have had the best time getting to be a part of this program for the last few seasons. We have a record number of cheerleaders this season (450!) and it’s a
really great way to be involved in the community, as well as something that our kids are involved with as well. Mike also coaches a 4th grade Girls Flag Football team. The girls division is new this year, and it’s really exciting to see it come together!
What are your favorite things to do around town? We love walking to Uptown and visiting some of our favorite places — Holt’s, Pennyville, Beer on the Wall, where the kids love to play some old school Nintendo!, and of course, Chipotle (you might find us here at least once a week).
What are your favorite TV shows, sports teams? Now that it’s winter, we’ll do our best to watch the NFL as a family. We’re pretty diverse in our fandom — Bears, Giants, Chiefs, Dolphins, and Chargers all get some love in our home!
Why did you choose to live in this neighborhood? We chose to live in our neighborhood because of it’s proximity to Uptown, as well as our kids’ school. And we’re so thankful that we chose the neighborhood — specifically the street — that we live in, because we have the very best neighbors a family could ask for!
What is one of your favorite family holiday traditions? One of the things we love to do during the holiday season is head over to Easy Street in Park Ridge when it’s transformed into all things Home Alone! They do such a great job decking it out and making it fun for everyone.

BY REV. CAROL HILL, SENIOR MINISTER AT PARK RIDGE COMMUNITY CHURCH
When the Community gathers together, something special happens. We’ve all experienced it in a plethora of settings (sporting events, marathons, vigils, etc).
Park Ridge is a community with many different religious and spiritual expressions, several high schools, a multitude of community organizations, people from a variety of backgrounds, and over 37,000 residents. Even with all of our differences (maybe especially because of our differences) when the community gathers together, something special happens. I’ve seen it when we gathered for the September 11th and Police Memorial Services. I’ve seen it when we collected clothing, toys and money for the victims of the fire at Bristol Court. I’ve seen it as individuals, groups, and churches have worked together to provide a weekly free, hot meal through Sunday
Night Suppers. Christmas is a holy day in the Christian tradition, but December is also when the Winter Solstice/ Yule, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa are celebrated. Beyond that, many who do not identify with these religious traditions have created their own family and cultural celebrations, exchanging presents, gathering with loved ones, and finding that “something special” in community.
On December 14, there will be a new opportunity for us to gather as a community: A Christmas Stroll through Park Ridge. In the aftermath of a contentious presidential election, while wars are raging in multiple parts of the world, and following the isolation of covid-lockdowns, we need community now more than ever. That “something special” that happens when people gather may feel like JOY as we have a snowball fight in Hodges
We may find that something special really does happen when all of us gather, united through kindness and the shared human experience.
Park. It may feel like WARMTH as we sip hot chocolate with neighbors at the Chase Bank. It may feel like HOPE as we watch the children’s pageant and listen to the Middle and High School choirs at Park Ridge Community Church. As we gather with our neighborsfriends and strangers alike - we may find that we have more in common than we realized. We may find some of our despair and cynicism heal. We may find our spirits feel lighter. We may find that something special really does happen when all of us gather, united through kindness and the shared human experience. This Christmas, I hope and pray that Park Ridge will gather, celebrate, and connect with each other as we rediscover the beauty found only in community.

A SHOUT-OUT TO Mr. Generosity!
At this time of year when everyone takes stock of the year and is grateful for our community and the many individuals that help to make Park Ridge such a special place in which to live, it is good to give a shout-out to some of those people.
Thank you so much to Mr. Ted Sigg for his amazing gifts of time and talent (and treasure) so generously offered to Park Ridgians of all ages. He always makes his basement workshop available and designs easy projects for centenarians as well as Cub Scouts to tackle. He obtains materials, pre-cuts the wood, arranges the projects and invites groups of all sorts to come. and spend a few hours in his workshop.
Paint is provided so that finished projects can be personalized.
Local Cub Scouts are regular visitors. Ted will offer tips as they create their Pinewood Derby cars or assemble their sailboats for the Raingutter Regatta. Seniors will create birdhouses or other similar projects. A simple decorative napkin holder is one of the latest projects. He is always on the lookout for something new that people would like to do and prepares kits so that the work is as easy as possible for everyone.
His home-made little slice-ofbread cutting boards are especially useful in the kitchen!
THANK YOU, Ted! You are POSITIVELY PARK RIDGE!!!
Do you know a POSITIVE person in Park Ridge? We bet you do! Nominate them to be featured and honored! Email strollparkridge@ gmail.com
1 / Ted often helps groups assemble bird houses. From experience he has learned that birds prefer unfinished homes, but lots of folks like to decorate their birdhouses.
2 / Ted’s slice-of-bread cutting board!
3 / Christmas is coming all too soon! Ted distributes little creche scenes that children can play with, moving the characters around. Of course, they can paint Mary, Joseph and Baby Jesus and then decorate their star!
my side, usually. Traditions are hard to squeeze in.
BY RESIDENT SCOTT CASTELLANOS
The holidays are upon us and with that comes traditions.
I am someone that has always been on the fence about traditions. I appreciate and enjoy some, but I do not like to be bound by them either. My family is a fly by the seat of their pants kind of crew. If you have read Life in the Dad Lane
over the years, you know we are always busy and on the go, so it is not always easy to stick to traditions fully. We feel it is important to keep them alive as best we can, but we are realistic in knowing that we have some hurdles to clear.
First hurdle is TIME. I don’t care what the Rolling Stones sang, time is not on
Second hurdle, ENTHUSIASM. My kids, like most teenagers, find everything boring and, let’s face it, a lot of traditions can be boring, by today’s standards.
Third hurdle, PLEASING EVERYONE. As you know, you can’t, so that means someone will have an issue with something.
To address these and the many other unnamed hurdles, we have taken the approach of only holding ourselves to the “spirit of the tradition”. Meaning, if we can’t do it on the day it is supposed to be, we do it when we can. If it isn’t fun, we add some fun by
any means necessary, including bribes, adding silliness and, of course, adult beverages. As far as pleasing everybody, hopefully that was addressed by the preceding steps and if not, we have adopted the old tried-and-true approach of “too bad, so sad” and “fake it till you make it”.
that has stuck and that is cutting down our Christmas tree. This one really hasn’t had to deal with the hurdles. We drive to the country; we cut down a tree, sing Christmas songs, drink hot cocoa, and we all look forward to it. Knock on wood.
you can’t be traditional, be TRADITION-ISH.
