Our Exclusive Doll Costumes Dollmasters first introduced its exclusive line of doll costumes ten years ago with a simple white baby gown lavished with rows of tucking and lace — just like an original baby gown made about 1890. Since that time we have added more than 400 different designs to our line of doll costumes for antique dolls.

What makes Dollmasters costumes different than others you might find? Two things. First, we insist that costumes only be re-created from actual original clothes — rather than from patterns. We search the archives and attics of Europe and America for antique doll costumes, study their construction, fabrics, and ornamentation, and copy our costumes exactly from those.

Secondly, we use the very same fabrics that would have been used in 1870 or 1890 or 1920. Only pure fine cottons, silks and woolens are used for Dollmasters costumes, and only in the authentic colors of the era.

Many collectors are knowledgeable about which styles are proper for their dolls — but many are not. If you need help in selecting the proper style and size for your doll we are anxious to help. We have a sample of each costume right at hand and can offer whatever additional information you need.

Length: Lay your doll flat on table and measure from the top of the forehead to toes.

Shoulders: Put arms flat at side. Measure from top upper shoulder on one side to the other.

Waist: Measure circumference all around.

Some Tips for the Perfect Fit 1. Remember, just like fitting clothes for real people, each doll is different. It is normal to expect that minor alterations may be needed. You may need to shorten a hem, open a seam at the cuff, or change a button in order to achieve a perfect fit. These are normal fitting adjustments that are to be expected — just as you would do with your own ready-to-wear wardrobe.

2. Many of our costumes have been constructed with drawstring or elastic waist, neck and cuffs for easiest fit.

Hem: Lengths vary with style. About 1-2" below the knee allows for enough length, but may need shortening.

3. Many of our costumes are displayed at conventions, auctions, and shows. You are welcome to bring your doll for a fitting, if convenient.

4. Ask your local doll shop to carry our costumes (see wholesale program below) so you can conveniently visit that shop for a fitting.

How To Make a Costume Unique Although our costumes are produced in very small quantities — seldom more than 25 of each costume — you might wish to modify a costume to make it uniquely yours. This can be achieved by adding a variation of lace or by changing the color of a silk ribbon. You might add a bébé brooch or pin. We have seen some lovely hand-embroidery added to the collar or hem. You might combine a Dollmaster costume with elements of an antique costume that you own — a pretty blouse with an antique skirt, or a pinafore over an old dress (especially if you need to disguise an old spot in that dress). Some collectors prefer an aged look to their costumes and they employ a technique of tea-dyeing the fabric to age it just a bit.

Returns will be accepted within 30 days, and although you don’t have to tell us the reason, we would appreciate knowing why, as it helps us improve our product. Ernestine Jumeau was able to design bébé dresses in the 1880 era that had layer-on-layer of froth and finery, but never too much. This dress is the same.

Its alternating plain weave and shadow-pane silk in a soft sand color features skirt lappets with self-covered decorative buttons, shirred yoke with self-cording and wide lace trim that is repeated on the collar. Little details such as contrasting shadow-weave piping on the edges of the turn-up cuffs and detachable sash add panache. Fully lined and with built-in petticoat.
