Robin’s connection to Dollar spans more than seven decades. He still recalls the kindness of teachers and friends, and the joy of playing rugby and cricket. Boarding life shaped him: “It was up to you to write your story on a blank piece of paper. And I found Dollar to be a very supportive place – people helped me along the way.”

That compassion and sense of belonging have inspired his generosity to the school. Robin’s giving began in the early 1990s, supporting rugby tours and training. “I started giving every year – sometimes for coaching, sometimes for trips. That’s how my donations began.” Rugby remains a special passion: “You can see the impact gifts have. The quality of schoolboy rugby is so much higher now than in my day – the talent that’s coming through is amazing.”

Equally close to his heart is the Dollar Academy Pipe Band. “It’s a very emotional experience to listen to the pipes,” he explains. His late wife Sheila, also a Former Pupil (1957), loved them too, and together they created the Sheila and Robin Wight Pipe Band Prize, awarded not to the ‘best piper’ but to the pupil who makes the greatest contribution. “Sheila didn’t want it to be for the best player. She wanted it to recognise dedication, commitment, improvement – the spirit of the band. That was important to both of us.”

Robin is also a major supporter of the Futures Institute at Dollar Academy (FIDA), an initiative he believes is vital for the next generation. “When I first heard about it, it just sounded such an interesting and rewarding project– innovative, something completely different. I thought, that’s well worth supporting. I can’t see it being anything other than a success.”

At 86, Robin remains a regular visitor to the school. He values being kept informed and connected. “Communication is important. I like to know what’s going on and to feel involved. That’s what makes giving so worthwhile.”

I’m proud of the school. Proud of what it has achieved and where it’s going. I’m proud to say that I went to Dollar. It’s a wonderful place, and I’m glad I can give something back.

The School is sincerely grateful to Robin for his longstanding generosity and commitment, which have strengthened our community across sport, music, and now through the Futures Institute. His loyalty to Dollar exemplifies how our Former Pupils continue to shape and inspire the next generation.
