The biggest event on the horizon is the Adelaide Royal Show, commencing Saturday 30 August and culminating with General Specials on Sunday 7 September. Throughout the week, there will also be sporting competitions including Agility, Obedience, and Dances with Dogs, and on the final Sunday, an Agility demonstration in the main arena. Let’s all get behind the Agility team and show our support! This is a fantastic opportunity to showcase to the public what Dogs SA has to offer—not only through pedigree dogs but also as a welcoming community for family pets. Best of luck to all competitors across every discipline. Remember, it’s a sport and a hobby—so let’s all have fun!
Over recent weekends, we’ve noticed an increase in campers staying on the grounds without advising the office. Camping is a free service provided by Dogs SA for members with self-contained caravans or campers. However, campers must notify the office of their intention to stay and obtain a gate key for emergencies. A $100 deposit applies for the key, which is fully refundable on its return. If members continue not to advise the office, Council may have no option but to review this policy.
You may also have noticed the canteen was closed at recent shows. Unfortunately, Margaret was unable to secure club volunteers to staff it. The canteen provides a valuable fundraising opportunity for clubs, with the potential to earn up to $380 per day—a welcome boost for clubs managing rising costs. The canteen is open to all Dogs SA clubs, so please consider taking advantage of this. While food vans have attended, feedback on quality and affordability has been mixed, and all profits go to the vendors. Council will be reviewing the operation of the canteen to see if better arrangements can be made rather than relying solely on clubs and a manager.
Once the weather clears, the groundsman will begin weed spraying across the property. The office will notify members when this is scheduled, and some areas may be closed for a couple of days. Please keep an eye out for notices and avoid restricted areas.
Although the weather is still chilly, warmer days are just around the corner— along with the usual summer challenges of heat and snakes.

Certificates – as from 1st July 2025
Due to certificates now being available from either Easydogs or Show Manager, it is no longer a requirement for Conformation Clubs to print certificates for exhibitors that do not require a hard copy.
Application for Conformation Titles can now be applied for with the point list from either of the online providers and there is no requirement for the hard copy certificate when lodged in this manner.
As from 1st July 2025, Conformation Certificates may only be available upon request at the event, on the day.
This enables exhibitors to continue applying for titles in the same manner they are familiar with if this is the preferred option.
If an exhibitor does not pick up their certificate on the day, the Club is not responsible to issue another one but can cooperate if they choose.
Australian Champion Stardayne Starlight Serenade A Little Dog with the Heart of a Lion
At the age of three and a half, Australian Champion Stardayne Starlight Serenade, the Dachshund belonging to Valerie Tapp, Breeder and Owner of Stardayne Kennels South Australia, and very successfully shown by Junior Handler Mikala Bonham, had the world at her feet.
Now at age 5 years she is a beacon of light giving hope and enabling Dogs, Animals and People worldwide to receive feet, limbs and a normal life.
How?
Serenade handled by Mikala winning Baby in Group under International Judge Mr. M Anderson of South Africa in 2018. Serenade went on to win Baby in Show under International Judge Mr. Noe Aburto Velazquez of Mexico.
Serenade, after a white tail spider bite needed to have her back left leg amputated. A considered solution was to have a velcro attached ‘Captain Cook Bucket’!!!!! It lasted 30 seconds.
Dachshunds being long in back and only having three legs, make it near to impossible for balance and movement. Such a solution is even inappropriate for humans long term.
The Solution for Serenade
Fellow Dachshund owner Pamila Sinclair, exploring options for a baby boy born with no fingers on his left hand at the time, was referred by a Prosthetics Company in Victoria, to Dr Matthew Breeds a Human & Veterinary Chiropractor and Co-Founder of The Animal Rehab Klinik (ARK), NSW. His Rottweiler Sunday, requiring a back left leg amputation one day after being born, became one of the first dogs in the Australia to receive a prosthetic implant designed for humans via cutting edge surgery, osseointegration into the tibia.
Dr Breeds subsequently referred Serenade to Veterinary Surgery Specialist Dr Daniel James Sydney Veterinary Emergency & Specialists (SVES) NSW.
The Result
Serenade became likely the first Dachshund in world to receive a prosthetic implant via osseointegration!
Assessed to be suitable for the ground breaking procedure after a CT scan (in SA) organized by Dr Daniel James, Serenade was flown to Sydney to be cared for by fellow Dachshund owner Janice Sharp for the entire procedure …. three surgeries and scans.
Serenade received a titanium implant (made in Italy) performed by Dr Daniel James and his team in conjunction with Orthopedic Surgeon Professor Munjed Al Muderis. Next it was rehabilitation with Dr Matthew Breeds. Serenade’s first steps on the computerized treadmill were classed as BRILLIANT.
With Serenade’s muscles and nerves attached to her implant, osseointegration for Serenade is permanent and comfortable. As well Serenade can walk and run knowing the difference between grass concrete carpet water.
This amazing procedure has given Serenade a second chance of having a normal life.
Gratitude
Thank God for people who care for animals and humans, and incredible medical teams who are focused on animals as well as humans.
Not only has Serenade a new lease on life, she has confirmed Australia as a world leader in osseointegration.

DOG / PUPPY / NEUTER OF THE YEAR COMPETITION GUIDELINES
Dogs SA Show Dog / Puppy / Neuter of the Year competition will be conducted on a date to be approved by Council each year.
Qualifying period shall commence on the first Monday after the Adelaide Royal Show and will conclude on the final day of the following Adelaide Royal Show.
Qualifying wins for Show Dog, Puppy & Neuter of the Year will be all Championship Shows sanctioned by Dogs SA and held in South Australia.
The qualified Dog, and at least one owner of the dog, must reside in South Australia and be a financial member of Dogs SA at the time of the qualifying win/s and at the date of the event. All other owners must be financial members of their controlling body.
To Quality for this event:
Show Dog of the Year – your dog must have been awarded one of the following:
• All Breeds Best in Show
• All Breeds RU Best in Show
• Deemed to be one of the top 3 dogs in your group, excluding dogs already qualified under the first 2 dot points. This will be calculated on a point score of 2 points for Best in Group or Best in Show Specialty and 1 point for RU Best in Group or Specialty. The points to be calculated at the end of the qualifying period with the top 3 dogs deemed the qualifiers (excluding the BIS & RUBIS winners)
Puppy of the Year – your puppy must have been awarded:
• All Breeds Baby, Minor or Puppy in Show
NOTE: To be eligible for POTY all Puppy qualifiers must be 6 months old as at the closing date of entries for the Puppy of the Year competition.
Neuter of the Year – your neuter must have been awarded:
• All Breeds Best Neuter in Show
• All Breeds RU Best Neuter in Show
Judges:
• The judging panel must consist of at least three ‘All Breeds’ Judges.
• No more than two judges to come from the same jurisdiction.
• It is preferable that all judges have not judged in South Australia in the preceding 12 months.
• All judges will remain anonymous until the date of judging.
* *The committee reserve the right to alter or amend the above requirements in unforeseen circumstances.
Judging Format:
• Order of Judging will commence with Neuter of the Year, then Puppy of the Year, followed by Show Dog of the Year.
• The first-round draw in each category will be by random ballot and may be subject to multiple dogs as required (no single dog rounds unless unavoidable).
• Exhibitors with more than one dog in the same category cannot draw each other in the first round.
• Judging is a knockout competition with the judges assessing each dog independently. The winner of each round will advance to the next round until the eventual winner is declared.
Flyball:Flyball is a relay race for dogs
Any dog can participate in Flyball regardless of breed, size or shape. Though a good recall will help.
Each team consists of 4 dogs with up to 2 reserve dogs that can be interchanged between heats. There can be either 3 or 5 hearts in each race. This is determined prior to the competition starting. There is a light system (similar to drag racing). When the light goes green, the 1st dog in each team crosses the line, jumps the 4 hurdles, triggers the flyball box, retrieves the ball, carries the ball back over the 4 hurdles then as it crosses the start / finish line the next dog goes until all 4 dogs have retrieved the ball. If a dog missed a jump or drops the ball, without re picking it up, must run at the end of the team forfeits the heat.
The team to compete the heat in the fastest time wins the heat. Flyball encourages handlers and spectators to encourage the dogs and cheer on their teams.
Currently in SA there are 2 clubs that compete in Flyball, Para District
Obedience Dog Club and Dover Gardens Kennel & Obedience Dog Club. Both clubs are happy to assist any other club start up Flyball if they are interested.
Dogs must be at least 12 months old to start training in Flyball. They should have a good recall and must be able to be near other dogs and it helps if they like a ball.
Flyball will be show cased at this years Royal Adelaide Show on Sunday 7th September on the main arena where SA will be hosting 5 teams from Victoria.
We will be racing under Australian Flyball Association rules with any titles gained being recognised by Dogs SA.
The racing will be fast and close with handicapped racing to ensure an even playing field.

Sprintdog ™ NEWS
What is Sprintdog™?
Sprintdog™ is an exciting and inclusive sport designed for all breeds of dogs. The concept is simple: dogs run a 100-metre straight track, either chasing the lure or being recalled by their owner. Each dog has two runs per trial, and their average speed over the distance is measured to calculate a final point score.
Handicap System
A handicap system is applied to ensure fairness across different sizes of dogs. The handicap is based on a dog’s height at the withers:
• Dogs under 30 cm receive a 1.5x score.
• Dogs under 45 cm receive a 1.25x score.
• Dogs over 45 cm receive no handicap.
Dogs must be officially measured before competing. An approved Dogs Australia Height Card (for Sprintdog™ or another Dogs Australia discipline) is required to confirm a dog’s height. If no Height Card is presented, the dog will be recorded as over 45 cm. Affiliates provide official measuring almost at every trial, and once measured, the dog is issued with a Height Card.
Titles
Titles are earned through the accumulation of points. Below are the Sprintdog™ titles and their requirements:
• N.SPRD — SprintDog™ Novice — 100 points
• SPRD — SprintDog™ — 250 points
• SPRD.A — SprintDog™ Advanced — 500 points
• SPRD.X — SprintDog™ Excellent — 750 points
• SPRD.M — SprintDog™ Master — 1000 points
• SPRD.Ch. — SprintDog™ Champion — 1500 points
The Sport in South Australia
As a new and volunteer-driven sport, Sprintdog™ requires significant investment in equipment—up to $6,500 worth of specialised machinery. The Adelaide Lure Coursing and racing club has been providing equipment at a
reasonable hire cost to clubs and Dogs SA have been a fantastic support for the establishment of Sprintdog™.
In the first 12 months, South Australia successfully hosted 8 trials. The second year is already looking promising, with 7 trials scheduled for the months of September and October.
Looking Ahead – nothing good happens overnight
We appreciate the patience and enthusiasm of Dogs SA members as this sport grows. Sprintdog™ is truly for everyone—whether your dog is lightning fast or simply enjoys the thrill of the run, the focus is on participation, fun, and shared enjoyment between dogs and their people. As we continue to build infrastructure, provide information, train judges and officials we appreciate your on going patience as demand outweighs our capacity.
In 2024 we had 1 club running trials with 2025 now having 4 clubs running trials. We are growing at a steady manageable pace and we look forward to having some fantastic Sprintdog™ events in 2026.

Dogs SA Child Safe Code of Conduct Policy
Caring for children and young people brings additional responsibilities for employees and volunteers of our organisation. All employees and volunteers of our organisation are responsible for promoting and protecting the safety and wellbeing of children and young people by:
• always sticking to the Dogs SA child safe policy and taking all reasonable steps to ensure the safety and protection of children and young people
• treating everyone (this includes staff, volunteers, students, children, young people and parents) including those of different race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, social class, physical ability or attributes and religious beliefs with respect and honesty and ensure equity is upheld
• being a positive role model to children and young people in all conduct with them
• setting clear boundaries about appropriate behaviour between yourself and the children and young people in Dogs SA – boundaries help everyone to understand their roles
• listening and responding appropriately to the views and concerns of children and young people
• being always mindful about bullying behaviours and responding promptly and appropriately
• ensuring another adult is always present or in sight when conducting one to one coaching, instruction, or other activity
• being alert to children and young people who have been harmed, or may be at risk of harm and reporting this quickly to the Child Abuse Report Line (13 14 78)
• responding quickly, fairly, and transparently to any complaints made by a child, young person, or their parent/ guardian
• encouraging children and young people to ‘have a say’ on issues that are important to them.
Employees and volunteers must not:
• engage in rough physical games
• develop any ‘special’ relationships with children and young people that could be seen as favouritism such as the offering of gifts or special treatment
• do things of a personal nature that a child or young person can do for themselves, such as toileting or changing clothes
• discriminate against any child or young person because of age, gender, cultural background, religion, vulnerability, or sexuality.
Reporting a Breach of the Code of Conduct
Any reports of breach of the Code of Conduct should be made to the Executive Officer, Dogs SA.
Consequences of Breaching the Code of Conduct
Any breaches of this Code of Conduct will be investigated promptly by the Executive Officer and further investigation may be undertaken by the Investigations Committee which could lead to Disciplinary action. Complainants will be informed of the outcome as soon as possible.
PART XV CODES
A. CODE OF ETHICS FOR MEMBERS
Each Member shall comply with the following Code of Ethics and any Member who fails to do so shall be guilty of an offence against these Rules. Maximum Penalty $5000 (07/22)
As a Member of the South Australian Canine Association:
1. I shall ensure that at all times all dogs under my control are properly and effectively contained by fencing or enclosure, and are properly housed, fed, watered, exercised and given proper Veterinary attention if and when required.
2. I shall not allow any dogs under my care to roam at large, and, when away from home, ensure they are kept fully leashed and under effective control, or otherwise under effective control at all times. (01/16)
3. I shall breed only for the purpose of improving the quality of the breed in line with the breed standard and strive to eliminate hereditary diseases in the breed/s that I produce.
4. I shall strive to have all my breeding stock tested, where tests are available, for hereditary diseases.
5. The health and welfare of a bitch being bred from is of paramount importance and I will adhere to the following minimum standards. (01/20)
(a) No bitch owned by me and/or under my control be mated before she is twelve months of age or older as prescribed in the ANKC Ltd Regulations Part 6 (04/25)
(b) No bitch can be whelped more than twice in any 18-month period without the prior approval of the SACA. (04/25)
(c) No mother/son, father/daughter or brother/sister matings are allowed. Puppies from such matings will be registered on the Limited Register and flagged never to be upgraded. (04/25)
(d) No bitch is allowed more than 5 litters in her lifetime. Puppies from such matings will be registered on the Limited Register and flagged never to be upgraded. (04/25)
(e) No bitch over 8 years of age can be bred from unless at the time of mating there was a current veterinary certificate stating that the bitch is in good health. The veterinary certificate must be presented at the time of registering the litter resulting from this mating. A current veterinarian certificate is defined as a certificate dated within the three months prior to the mating. (04/25)
6. I shall not knowingly permit any of my pure bred dogs to be mated to a dog of a different breed, to a cross bred dog, or to an unregistered dog of the same breed, or to a dog of the same breed which is entered on the Limited Register, unless specific permission is given by the SACA.
7. I shall not sell or otherwise transfer from my care any puppy under eight weeks of age, thus allowing for vaccination to be given at six weeks of age and thereby allowing for the ten to fourteen days for the vaccine to take effect. Upon the disposal of the dog, I shall provide the owner with a current vaccination certificate of that dog issued by a Veterinary Surgeon. Accepted Veterinarian vaccination certificates are C3 12/36 months, C4, C5 or an annual Titre Test accompanied by a Veterinarian letter. (01/19)
8. I shall not knowingly sell or otherwise transfer from my care any dog that is not in good health.
9. I shall ensure that any puppy that is to be exported shall be a minimum of eleven weeks of age and micro-chipped. (01/12)
10. I shall ensure that all persons acquiring dogs from me clearly understand their responsibility for the care and welfare of the animal as defined in Clause 1 and 2 above. I shall not knowingly misrepresent the characteristics of the breed, nor falsely advertise, or mislead any person regarding the performance of any dog.
