Who can believe we are now going into November - 2025 has just flown past. It has been a fast-paced year with several disciplines completing their 5-year rules reviews and commencing the implementation. We also have Scent Work and Sprint Dog disciplines out performing all expectations since their inception. Although we do need to encourage these new disciplines we also need to continue with the current ones as well. Through Dogs Australia and other member bodies we are seeking ways of changing some of the regulations to make these more appealing to the younger generation.
The Dogs Australia AGM and Main Board Meeting were concluded in October and as much as I would like to give you a breakdown of the results of the conference this is not possible until the minutes are ratified. A brief of the conference will be publicized on the Dogs SA Website, Facebook Members Page and in the Journal. Suffice to say the results of the meeting were very fruitful with the Board listening to the concerns of the membership and starting to implement changes to our hobbies to retain and entice members. Once the briefs are released and you have concerns or ideas, please feel free to come and discuss with either Peter Thompson or myself.
The Dogs Australia Administrator, Ms Tracey Barry, has tendered her resignation with effect 31 March 2026. On behalf of the Dogs SA Council and members I did wish her all the best for her retirement and sincerely thanked her for 23 Years of exceptional service. The position will be advertised through the member bodies and on SEEK shortly. A full position description will be advertised and although the position is currently in Brisbane it is open to be conducted from anywhere in Australia. The base criteria will be to have exceptional secretariate skills with the ability to work autonomously, very good communication skills at all levels and a reasonable knowledge of our disciplines. Once advertised and you believe you have the necessary attributes, please feel free to submit an application.
As I alluded to last month, I would like to organize a working bee for the grounds in early December. An indication of the works we would like completed is cleanup of the grounds particularly around the fence line, cleaning out the sheds which contain a large amount of equipment which is no longer used (this will need the assistance of the respective disciplines and members whose equipment is stored so we only dispose of stuff no longer required). A skip will be hired for the weekend to dispose of rubbish or no longer required objects. Your assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Notice to Members – Temporary Carpark Arrangements
Dogs SA advises Members that for the months of October, November and December, the bitumen carparks will be leased on weekdays (Monday to Friday) to a local company whilst renovations to their own carpark are undertaken.
Parking by the company will occur from early morning until 3.45pm each weekday. To ensure continued access for Members:
The front row of carparks directly opposite the office will remain reserved exclusively for Members attending the office.
Two carparks at the Off Lead area will be allocated for the use of Members whilst utilising that facility.
Extensive parking continues to be available elsewhere on the grounds, and these arrangements will not impact parking around the Showrings or Marsula Brine for Members wishing to use those areas during the week. Dogs SA appreciates the cooperation and understanding of Members during this temporary arrangement.

(a) Where an Exhibition is to be held by an Affiliate Member a copy of the draft schedule for the Exhibition shall be lodged with the SACA not later than three months prior to the proposed date thereof, except in the case of Retrieving, Field, Tracking, Lure Coursing, Scent Work, Sled Sport and Grooming Exhibitions which shall be lodged not later than two months prior to the date thereof, for consideration by the Executive Officer (01/25)
PROPOSED CHANGE:

RATIONALE:
The proposed changes reduce the timeframe for the provision of the draft schedule to Dogs SA from 3 months to 2 months. It can be quite difficult to book suitable venues for Dances with Dogs Competitions and often Trick Dog Tests are held the next day to assist with the financial viability of the DWD.
2. CURRENT RULE: PART VIII EXHIBITIONS
Hot Weather Rules for Conformation, Obedience, Agility, Earthdog, Herding, Dances with Dogs, Lure Coursing, Scent Work and Sled Sport
10. The following Exhibitions must be postponed or cancelled or the commencement time amended to not before 7.00pm when the forecast temperature at 10.00am from the bom.gov.au site (or app) two days prior for (02/23)
(a) Conformation Exhibitions, is 35 degrees Celsius or higher; (02/23)

RATIONALE:
Trick Dog Tests are their own, stand-alone trial and are conducted by numerous Clubs such as SAODC, Southern Districts and Noarlunga who do not hold Dances with Dogs competitions. As such Clubs and competitors are not aware that Trick Dog Tests fall under the auspices of Dances with Dogs. To ensure all Clubs and competitors are aware of the Dogs SA Hot Weather Rules as they apply to Trick Dog Tests, we ask that Trick Dog Tests be specified in 10.(b).
3. CURRENT RULE:

No Member of a judge’s family or household shall exhibit or handle a dog at any Conformation Exhibition at which the Judge officiates or in the same ring or test at a Obedience, Retrieving, Endurance Test, Tracking, Field, Herding, Agility, Earthdog, Dances with Dogs, Lure Coursing, Scent Work, Sled Sport and Grooming Activity. (01/25)
PROPOSED CHANGE:
8. No Member of a judge’s family or household shall exhibit or handle a dog at any Conformation Exhibition at which the Judge officiates or in the same ring or test at a Obedience, Retrieving, Endurance Test, Tracking, Field, Herding, Agility, Earthdog, Lure Coursing, Scent Work, Sled Sport and Grooming Activity.
8 (a). For Dances with Dogs competitions and Trick Dog tests, no member of a judge’s family or household shall handle a dog in the ring when that judge officiates but may be judged in Dances with Dogs by a panel of up to three different judges and in Trick Dog Tests by a different judge.
RATIONALE:
The rationale for this proposed change is that Trick Dog Tests are covered under 12(h) for judges and 12(f) for Dances with Dogs Judges. It is therefore unfair to prevent a family member of that judge from also being able to compete at the Test/competition. Given the judge can compete under a different judge, this amendment simply extends that to the family members of the judge. DWD and Trick Dog Tests are a small dog community who work together and often undertake multiple roles at events, and this clause is a significant disincentive for a judge who has family involved in the discipline to accept judging appointments.

Congratulations to all competitors at the State, fantastic to watch the dog work, I really enjoyed it as a unwell spectator who got sent to stay in the car so that no-one would catch my germs!
Thanks to our judge Greg Playdon (V), SACA Rep Lynne Webster, Trial Manager John Nairn and all of those who helped before, during and after the Championship. Without the assistance of the interstate competitors who helped life would not have been so easy. The judge’s wife Anna our assembly steward, Neville Stewart who came from Victoria to help but wasn’t entered, with most of the competitors assisting in some way or another on throwers, gun steward, pick up dog, game drag, game relocation plus the local ones Gail and Rob Phoenix, Lynne Webster, Michael Mason, Jadine MacKenzie, Ray Ashenden and RAFT members Jeff Patrick and John Nairn, some of whom helped Greg set up the trial on Friday as well.

The Herding State Trials were held on Friday 22nd, Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th of August 2025, the first state trials in quite a number of years.
A fabulous time was had by all with some lovely work by some exceptional dogs and their handlers. We had 53 entries over the course of the weekend.
There was some friendly rivalry with some interstate competition and a great deal of camaraderie.
The committee would like to thank all the support and help for the 3-day double trials with A and B course Sheep, A course Cattle and A & B course Ducks offered. The stock was well conditioned and our venues were top notch.

PART XV CODES
A. CODE OF ETHICS FOR MEMBERS
Each Member shall comply with the following Code of Ethics and any Member who fails to do so shall be guilty of an offence against these Rules. Maximum Penalty $5000 (07/22)
As a Member of the South Australian Canine Association:
1. I shall ensure that at all times all dogs under my control are properly and effectively contained by fencing or enclosure, and are properly housed, fed, watered, exercised and given proper Veterinary attention if and when required.
2. I shall not allow any dogs under my care to roam at large, and, when away from home, ensure they are kept fully leashed and under effective control, or otherwise under effective control at all times. (01/16)
3. I shall breed only for the purpose of improving the quality of the breed in line with the breed standard and strive to eliminate hereditary diseases in the breed/s that I produce.
4. I shall strive to have all my breeding stock tested, where tests are available, for hereditary diseases.
5. The health and welfare of a bitch being bred from is of paramount importance and I will adhere to the following minimum standards. (01/20)
(a) No bitch owned by me and/or under my control be mated before she is twelve months of age or older as prescribed in the ANKC Ltd Regulations Part 6 (04/25)
(b) No bitch can be whelped more than twice in any 18-month period without the prior approval of the SACA. (04/25)
(c) No mother/son, father/daughter or brother/sister matings are allowed. Puppies from such matings will be registered on the Limited Register and flagged never to be upgraded. (04/25)
(d) No bitch is allowed more than 5 litters in her lifetime. Puppies from such matings will be registered on the Limited Register and flagged never to be upgraded. (04/25)
(e) No bitch over 8 years of age can be bred from unless at the time of mating there was a current veterinary certificate stating that the bitch is in good health. The veterinary certificate must be presented at the time of registering the litter resulting from this mating. A current veterinarian certificate is defined as a certificate dated within the three months prior to the mating. (04/25)
6. I shall not knowingly permit any of my pure bred dogs to be mated to a dog of a different breed, to a cross bred dog, or to an unregistered dog of the same breed, or to a dog of the same breed which is entered on the Limited Register, unless specific permission is given by the SACA.
7. I shall not sell or otherwise transfer from my care any puppy under eight weeks of age, thus allowing for vaccination to be given at six weeks of age and thereby allowing for the ten to fourteen days for the vaccine to take effect. Upon the disposal of the dog, I shall provide the owner with a current vaccination certificate of that dog issued by a Veterinary Surgeon. Accepted Veterinarian vaccination certificates are C3 12/36 months, C4, C5 or an annual Titre Test accompanied by a Veterinarian letter. (01/19)
8. I shall not knowingly sell or otherwise transfer from my care any dog that is not in good health.
9. I shall ensure that any puppy that is to be exported shall be a minimum of eleven weeks of age and micro-chipped. (01/12)
10. I shall ensure that all persons acquiring dogs from me clearly understand their responsibility for the care and welfare of the animal as defined in Clause 1 and 2 above. I shall not knowingly misrepresent the characteristics of the breed, nor falsely advertise, or mislead any person regarding the performance of any dog. I shall provide to all purchasers of dogs or those placed by me, written details of all dietary and vaccination requirements and responsible dog ownership and/or an appropriate publication relating to such requirements.
11. I shall not sell any dog to commercial dog wholesalers, retail pet dealers, or directly or indirectly to allow a dog to be given as a prize or donation in a contest of any kind or to be auctioned. (01/12)
12. I shall ensure that every dog in every litter I breed will be registered as required in the SACA Rules. (07/22)

Best of Breed / Challenge Certificates – as from 1st July 2025
Due to certificates now being available from Show Manager, it is no longer a requirement for Conformation Clubs to print certificates for exhibitors that do not require a hard copy.
Application for Conformation Titles can now be applied for with the point list from either of the online providers and there is no requirement for the hard copy certificate when lodged in this manner.
As from 1st July 2025, Conformation Certificates may only be available upon request at the event, on the day.
This enables exhibitors to continue applying for titles in the same manner they are familiar with if this is the preferred option.
If an exhibitor does not pick up their certificate on the day, the Club is not responsible to issue another one but can cooperate if they choose.
