I trust everyone had a very enjoyable Easter Break. There were many activities conducted over Easter including Shows at Port Pirie and Shows & Trials at Mount Gambier. I attended the Pt Pirie Easter Shows which were very well run and it was good to see the comradery between the exhibitors. Win or lose many appeared to have a good time. The weather must have come from Melbourne as we had all 4 seasons over the break. I must also congratulate the Port Pirie Club on the condition of the grounds as although a little rough there was sufficient grass for the rings. Having so much grass would not have been easy with the Mid North area being declared drought affected and the farmers receiving Government assistance.
The Executive Officer and I attended several meetings with both the Department of Environment & Water (DEW) and the Dog and Cat Management Board (DCMB) to push the case for Dogs SA members in relation to the proposed changes to the Dog and Cat Management Act and the Standards and Guidelines for the Breeding of Companion Animals. At this stage there is little progress to report however we will continue to work with DEW and the DCMB and report back to members through electronic media and journal as we know more.
After a review of the lighting in the hall (much of which is not working) Council has considered the option of upgrading both the hall and the Judges Training Rooms to LED. A quotation is received and approval has been given to proceed. This will make the areas more fit for purpose with the increased lighting levels and reduced operating costs.
Over the past months the Executive Officer with Council has been attempting to grow turf in the areas around rings 4 – 6. This has been relatively successful however more work is required and the areas will be cordoned off until at least the Winter International at the end of May. Further reseeding/turfing will be completed after winter as the weather starts to warm again for the optimum growing season.
As the Executive Officer has posted previously Nova Mahajabin has resigned from her position and Nigel Callaghan has been recruited as the new Finance Officer. Nigel will commence work on 29 April 2025. In the meantime, please be patient when doing business with the office as they are short staffed one member and need to train Nigel in the idiosyncrasies of the dog world.
The Adelaide weather finally appears to be cooling so remember it is not just you who may feel the cold but many of our furry friends do as well, so please ensure they have plenty of warm shelter and rugs to keep warm.

Requirements for Registration
We wish to advise the Dogs Australia Board of Directors have agreed to accept Murray River Retriever dogs for re-registration if the owner provides a three-generation pedigree and positive identification, and the owner must be a financial member of a Dogs Australia Member Body.
Requirements for the Registration of a litter of Murray River Retrievers.
1. Dam owner/s must be a financial member/s of a Dogs Australia State or Territory Member Body.
2. The Dam owner/s must hold a Dogs Australia prefix.
3. Sire and Dam must be registered on the Dogs Australia main register.

A. CODE OF ETHICS FOR MEMBERS
Each Member shall comply with the following Code of Ethics and any Member who fails to do so shall be guilty of an offence against these Rules. Maximum Penalty $5000 (07/22)
As a Member of the South Australian Canine Association:
1. I shall ensure that at all times all dogs under my control are properly and effectively contained by fencing or enclosure, and are properly housed, fed, watered, exercised and given proper Veterinary attention if and when required.
2. I shall not allow any dogs under my care to roam at large, and, when away from home, ensure they are kept fully leashed and under effective control, or otherwise under effective control at all times. (01/16)
3. I shall breed only for the purpose of improving the quality of the breed in line with the breed standard and strive to eliminate hereditary diseases in the breed/s that I produce.
4. I shall strive to have all my breeding stock tested, where tests are available, for hereditary diseases.
5. The health and welfare of a bitch being bred from is of paramount importance and I will adhere to the following minimum standards. (01/20)
(a) No bitch owned by me and/or under my control be mated before she is twelve months of age or older as prescribed in the ANKC Ltd Regulations Part 6 (04/25)
(b) No bitch can be whelped more than twice in any 18-month period without the prior approval of the SACA. (04/25)
(c) No mother/son, father/daughter or brother/sister matings are allowed. Puppies from such matings will be registered on the Limited Register and flagged never to be upgraded. (04/25)
(d) No bitch is allowed more than 5 litters in her lifetime. Puppies from such matings will be registered on the Limited Register and flagged never to be upgraded. (04/25)
(e) No bitch over 8 years of age can be bred from unless at the time of mating there was a current veterinary certificate stating that the bitch is in good health. The veterinary certificate must be presented at the time of registering the litter resulting from this mating. A current veterinarian certificate is defined as a certificate dated within the three months prior to the mating. (04/25)
6. I shall not knowingly permit any of my pure bred dogs to be mated to a dog of a different breed, to a cross bred dog, or to an unregistered dog of the same breed, or to a dog of the same breed which is entered on the Limited Register, unless specific permission is given by the SACA.
7. I shall not sell or otherwise transfer from my care any puppy under eight weeks of age, thus allowing for vaccination to be given at six weeks of age and thereby allowing for the ten to fourteen days for the vaccine to take effect. Upon the disposal of the dog, I shall provide the owner with a current vaccination certificate of that dog issued by a Veterinary Surgeon. Accepted Veterinarian vaccination certificates are C3 12/36 months, C4, C5 or an annual Titre Test accompanied by a Veterinarian letter. (01/19)
8. I shall not knowingly sell or otherwise transfer from my care any dog that is not in good health.
9. I shall ensure that any puppy that is to be exported shall be a minimum of eleven weeks of age and micro-chipped. (01/12)
10. I shall ensure that all persons acquiring dogs from me clearly understand their responsibility for the care and welfare of the animal as defined in Clause 1 and 2 above. I shall not knowingly misrepresent the characteristics of the breed, nor falsely advertise, or mislead any person regarding the performance of any dog. I shall provide to all purchasers of dogs or those placed by me, written details of all dietary and vaccination requirements and responsible dog ownership and/or an appropriate publication relating to such requirements.
11. I shall not sell any dog to commercial dog wholesalers, retail pet dealers, or directly or indirectly to allow a dog to be given as a prize or donation in a contest of any kind or to be auctioned. (01/12)
12. I shall ensure that every dog in every litter I breed will be registered as required in the SACA Rules. (07/22)

borzoi
History
Borzoi have been an integral part of Russian national culture and history for nine centuries. The Russian nobility bred and hunted wolf, fox, hare and sable with them. Often a particular aristocratic family’s Borzoi could be distinguished by their distinctive colour, markings and head shape.
From the time of the first Tzar to the abolition of serfdom in 1861, hunting with Borzoi reached the level of the national sport of the aristocracy, with hunts consisting of a hundred Borzoi or more, accompanied by mounted huntsmen and packs of foxhounds used to flush out the game.
Borzoi also began to be shown with the first Borzoi Show being held in Moscow in 1873, followed by shows in Britain. One Borzoi in particular, who was given to Queen Alexandra by Tsar Alexander II, was successfully exhibited on a number of occasions becoming undefeated champion.
In later years, during the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods, Borzoi were often used in artistic works as their elegant shape complimented the flowing lines of those movements.
Temperament
Borzoi are a quiet, sensitive and very gentle breed. They are very loving and attentive to their owners but can be aloof with strangers. Typical of sighthounds, they tend to spend most of their time lounging about. One should never forget though, they are a hunting
hound with very fast reflexes and can run incredibly fast if something catches their attention.
Health
Borzoi tend to be a remarkably healthy breed. However, in common with other large, deep chested breeds, bloat and osteosarcoma can occur. Hip dysplasia is virtually unknown in the breed. DM (degenerative myelopathy) can be found in some bloodlines and breeders do test for it.
Suitability
The Borzoi is a devoted and loyal family pet. When raised with children, most Borzoi make good companions, but they are not a breed that will readily tolerate the rough and tumble of a young child.
Borzoi can live quite happily outside but love being with their family and do make excellent housedogs.
They are quiet and clean by nature and when inside, tend to curl up in a corner where they can keep an eye on their owners.
They tolerate the cold very well and in those parts of Australia where it snows, they can be seen contentedly stretched out in it snoozing. Owners do need to be mindful of them overheating in hot weather and provide suitable cool areas for them.
Although Borzoi don’t require a large amount of exercise, they do enjoy a good gallop and can walk for kilometres with more active owners. However, they are extremely fast runners and should not be let off lead unless they are in a securely fenced area.

Neville Cox
My love for agility goes way back to 1986, when Agility first started in South Australia. And from then on, I was hooked. I was entered in the very first agility trial held in SA in 1987. I have owned 4 agility dogs in the past, I started with my 7 year old Labrador, Cher, who became one of the first dogs in SA to gain an AD Title, then later with another Labrador, Jade, she was small, only 440mm in height, but held her own amongst the bigger dogs, she got her AD title and went on to become an Obedience Champion.
I have competed successfully with two Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers, and trialled my daughters Aussie Shepherd, who gained his ADX, JDM, SD & GD titles before being retired. I gained my Agility Judges Licence in 1996; I love judging and have judged in all States of Australia. I think I’m a fair judge and it gives me a great thrill when I see dogs that I’m judging walk out of the ring happy, whether they qualify or not. For me, it’s all about having fun with our dogs!
I’m looking forward to judging Games at this year’s State Championships. Good luck to everyone entered.
Lyn Madden
Lynn Madden is from Parkes NSW and has been involved with agility for the last 12 years. She has done all of her training in rural NSW and became a OneMind dogs instructor in 2017 to help teach agility at her local club.
This has turned into a full-time job for Lynn now both being a coach for OneMind dogs program as well as teaching seminars all over Australia. In 2024 Lynn did her judges training and is now started Judging in many states.
Lynn competes with her 2 border collies Rain and Drift and her handling style is calm, decisive, and deliberate. She decides on a handling plan and executes it to the best of her abilities. Her strengths lay in the ability to think on her feet. “My goal is always to stay connected, choose handling plans that are smooth, and handling the dog I have on the day.”
Lynn’s courses aim to test the dog’s ability to collect and extend through the course. She likes the courses to flow and has a good understanding of the dog’s lines on course well and has the team’s safety upmost in mind when designing.

My name is Karen, and I am from Cairns in Far North Queensland. I got hooked on agility back in 2007. I have been judging agility for 6 years now and it is quickly becoming an obsession. My course design style is fast and flowy but technically challenging. I thank Jan EE and Petr P for their guidance over the years. Highlights include Judging at the 2024 NSW Agility Nationals and twice now at The Sydney Royal Show.
Agility to me is a game of trained skills, good handling choices and teamwork. If you can do these 3 things on my courses you will not only have fun you will feel that adrenaline rush, we are all here to get!

I am still developing my course style, but I tend towards fast, flowing courses.

Since becoming an Agility judge in the late 1980s I have judged extensively throughout South Australia as well as in most other States and Territories, including State Championships, Royal Shows and Nationals.
Some years ago, I took the plunge and competed with my German Shepherd for a while, gaining our Novice titles in both Agility and Jumping before realising that our best days were probably behind us and making a strategic retirement.
I am looking forward to judging at this year’s State Championships and wish the Committee and all competitors the best of luck for a successful event.

The test is open to dogs aged between two (2) and under eight (8) years but not have reached the birth date of eight (8) years on the day of the trial. A Veterinary Certificate issued within fourteen (14) days immediately prior to the date of the test must be submitted for each dog on the day of the test. It shall cover such things as the general fitness, temperature, standing heart rate, condition of the pads and muscle tone of the dog. (For bitches the certificate is also to state the bitch is not in whelp)
