After a long dry spell, the weather gods have finally smiled on South Australia, delivering some much-needed rainfall. Fortunately, the rain held off for the Dogs SA Winter International, our premier conformation event. With entries exceeding 1,200 on most days, this showcase once again proved that a well-executed event can attract strong participation from both local and interstate exhibitors.
Unfortunately, the State Agility Trials held the following weekend at Munno Para Obedience Dog Club weren’t as lucky, with competitors braving heavy rain, wind, hail, and even lightning. The event had to be cancelled on Saturday afternoon due to the extreme weather. However, in true dog sport spirit, competitors returned on Sunday under much clearer skies. The event still saw an excellent turnout, with strong support from both local and visiting participants.
The long weekend was certainly a busy one. I had the privilege of being the SACA Representative for the German Shepherd Club on Saturday and Sunday, before heading to the State Agility Trials on Monday. It was fantastic to see the enthusiasm and energy at the trials — the dogs were clearly having a blast (even if their handlers occasionally looked ready to pull their hair out!). Agility participants were also featured in a live radio interview, and a story covering the event appeared in The Bunyip newspaper — a great show of community representation and spirit.
Later on Monday, I was back at Dogs SA David Roche Park, cooking up a sausage sizzle for attendees at the Conformation Judges Practical Handling Day. Despite the weekend’s weather, there was a good turnout of dogs and handlers — a testament to the dedication of our community.
The Adelaide Lure Coursing Club also ran Sprint Dog trials while the Riverland Shows took place in Barmera with great success. Unfortunately, the scheduled Lure Coursing on Sunday had to be cancelled due to unsafe ground conditions. That said, combining multiple dog disciplines at the same venue is a powerful way to engage members, encourage cross-discipline participation, and provide more variety for spectators.
We are continuously working to accommodate all disciplines at DRP. Over the past month, we’ve hosted Trick Dog Tests, Mock Trials for trainee judges, and regular Dances with Dogs training sessions. Evening Trick Training, Show Training, and Obedience Classes by the Rottweiler Club and Dogs SA also remain active. Discussions are ongoing about installing a Sprint Dog track at DRP to further expand our offerings.
Those who have returned to DRP since the Winter International will have noticed some wear and tear on the grounds, but overall, they’ve held up very well. Thank you to everyone for your cooperation and understanding around the careful placement of mats and equipment — your consideration makes a big difference in keeping the grounds usable for all.

(a) A Member acting in an abusive or disrespectful manner towards an employee or official of the SACA
13. A Member, including an Affiliate Member, who fails to remove an electronic communication posted on any of, but not limited to, social media sites, all and other electronic forms of communication, when requested by the Executive Officer or their representative
14. A Member shall not to contact a Judge after the announcement of that Judge’s appointment by any means that may be interpreted as promoting that Member or Member’s Exhibits. This includes social media sites, email and all electronic forms of communication as well as traditional forms of communication. Should a Judge receive such an approach, they must report the matter to the appropriate Member Body and disciplinary action may be taken against the Member.
15. A Member
(a) forges the signature of another Member or person on any document relating to the activities of the SACA;
(b) provides false or misleading information on or in relation to any official document relating to the activities of the SACA;
16. A Member or Affiliate Member, when requested to provide information or documents, relating to the activities of the SACA, to Council, a Dogs SA Investigator or Dogs SA Inspector or an Affiliate Member, unreasonably fails to do so without just cause,
17. Where a Member or Affiliate Member, is indebted to the SACA or an Affiliate Member and that debt remains outstanding for more than sixty days after that date on which it was due without the approval of the Executive Officer, that person or Affiliate Member
18. 16. It shall be a breach of these Rules for an Exhibit at any Exhibition to attack another dog or a person or display any undue aggressive or savage disposition or aggressive or savage tendency towards another dog or person and the Owner/s and/or Handler of the Exhibit
(a) Any Judge, Exhibition Official or Member of the SACA or other Controlling Body who witnesses an exhibit or exhibitor acting in breach of the Constitution and Rules of the SACA must forthwith report the incident in writing to the SACA Representative.
19. No Member shall own, use or otherwise deal with a knobbed, spiked, pronged or electric collar.
20. Any member who breaches Clause 19 (2)(a) of the Constitution by failing to cooperate or assist with a Conciliation process, the Investigation Committee, the Disciplinary Committee or the Appellate Committee 6 months and/or $500 5 years and/or $2000
21. Any member who breaches Clause 19 (2)(b) of the Constitution by making a malicious, frivolous or vexatious allegation to the Executive Officer or SACA Representative
Where 2 or more members are jointly found guilty of an offence any penalties will be applied individually to all parties.

A. CODE OF ETHICS FOR MEMBERS
Each Member shall comply with the following Code of Ethics and any Member who fails to do so shall be guilty of an offence against these Rules. Maximum Penalty $5000 (07/22)
As a Member of the South Australian Canine Association:
1. I shall ensure that at all times all dogs under my control are properly and effectively contained by fencing or enclosure, and are properly housed, fed, watered, exercised and given proper Veterinary attention if and when required.
2. I shall not allow any dogs under my care to roam at large, and, when away from home, ensure they are kept fully leashed and under effective control, or otherwise under effective control at all times. (01/16)
3. I shall breed only for the purpose of improving the quality of the breed in line with the breed standard and strive to eliminate hereditary diseases in the breed/s that I produce.
4. I shall strive to have all my breeding stock tested, where tests are available, for hereditary diseases.
5. The health and welfare of a bitch being bred from is of paramount importance and I will adhere to the following minimum standards. (01/20)
(a) No bitch owned by me and/or under my control be mated before she is twelve months of age or older as prescribed in the ANKC Ltd Regulations Part 6 (04/25)
(b) No bitch can be whelped more than twice in any 18-month period without the prior approval of the SACA. (04/25)
(c) No mother/son, father/daughter or brother/sister matings are allowed. Puppies from such matings will be registered on the Limited Register and flagged never to be upgraded. (04/25)
(d) No bitch is allowed more than 5 litters in her lifetime. Puppies from such matings will be registered on the Limited Register and flagged never to be upgraded. (04/25)
(e) No bitch over 8 years of age can be bred from unless at the time of mating there was a current veterinary certificate stating that the bitch is in good health. The veterinary certificate must be presented at the time of registering the litter resulting from this mating. A current veterinarian certificate is defined as a certificate dated within the three months prior to the mating. (04/25)
6. I shall not knowingly permit any of my pure bred dogs to be mated to a dog of a different breed, to a cross bred dog, or to an unregistered dog of the same breed, or to a dog of the same breed which is entered on the Limited Register, unless specific permission is given by the SACA.
7. I shall not sell or otherwise transfer from my care any puppy under eight weeks of age, thus allowing for vaccination to be given at six weeks of age and thereby allowing for the ten to fourteen days for the vaccine to take effect. Upon the disposal of the dog, I shall provide the owner with a current vaccination certificate of that dog issued by a Veterinary Surgeon. Accepted Veterinarian vaccination certificates are C3 12/36 months, C4, C5 or an annual Titre Test accompanied by a Veterinarian letter. (01/19)
8. I shall not knowingly sell or otherwise transfer from my care any dog that is not in good health.
9. I shall ensure that any puppy that is to be exported shall be a minimum of eleven weeks of age and micro-chipped. (01/12)
10. I shall ensure that all persons acquiring dogs from me clearly understand their responsibility for the care and welfare of the animal as defined in Clause 1 and 2 above. I shall not knowingly misrepresent the characteristics of the breed, nor falsely advertise, or mislead any person regarding the performance of any dog. I shall provide to all purchasers of dogs or those placed by me, written details of all dietary and vaccination requirements and responsible dog ownership and/or an appropriate publication relating to such requirements.
11. I shall not sell any dog to commercial dog wholesalers, retail pet dealers, or directly or indirectly to allow a dog to be given as a prize or donation in a contest of any kind or to be auctioned. (01/12)

History
The Cocker Spaniel has been helping to provide food for the table and filling the life of those who love him with joy and happiness. The breed’s cheerful disposition is infectious. From its ever-wagging tail and big shimmering pool eyes to its easy-going nature, it’s no wonder the breed was the most popular dog in England in the first half of the 20th Century for two decades.
The Cocker Spaniel is still one of the top-ranked breeds in popularity. The breed has been sharing its affection and love of life for over seven hundred years.
A breed of gun dog, the Cocker Spaniel is believed to have originated in Spain. However, it was in England, where the breed that we know today as the Cocker Spaniel was developed and was used extensively as a hunting companion. The original Spaniels were classified according to size, with the smaller Toy Spaniels kept as companions and larger “Cocking” Spaniels used for hunting.
Today, most Cockers still retain their instinctive hunting abilities and are very good when it comes to agility and field work, but they are predominantly companion dogs and thrive most when taken in as part of the pack.
Named for its talent for hunting woodcock, the Cocker Spaniel is fiercely loyal to its companion. These dogs just love to love you.
General appearance
Merry, sturdy, sporting; well balance; compact; measuring approximately same from withers to ground as from withers to root of tail.
Characteristics
Ever-wagging tail shows a typical bustling movement, particularly when following scent; fearless of heavy cover.
Temperament
Gentle and affectionate, yet full of life and exuberance.
This breed is loyal, lovable and devoted. They are cheerful, easy-going dogs that love to please their owners.
Suitability &Care
The breed is rarely aggressive, so is well-suited to families. In addition to their playful personality and ever-wagging tail, the breed’s gentle and tolerant temperament will bode well with children.
Cockers are also appropriate for energetic singles who spend a lot of time at home. Cockers will sound a warning bark when strangers are around; however, they are more likely to cover people with kisses than anything else.
Most Cockers still retain their instinctive hunting abilities and are very good when it comes to obedience, agility and field work, but they are predominantly companion dogs and thrive most when taken in as part of the pack.
A daily check of the coat for any mats is highly suggested paying particular attention to the area under the front legs and elbow, if knots are found gently brush them out.
A full groom and bath is required weekly to keep your Cocker in tip top condition. Remove any dead hair, make sure that ears are cleaned and dried and trim any excess hair from around the feet. Always speak to your breeder regarding your dog’s grooming needs, as breeders are only too happy to help in any way that they can, even where to go if you decide to have you Cocker “pet Clipped”.
As with all dogs, heart worming and flea control is required monthly and in summer you will also need to treat your dog against ticks.
Health
Bought from reputable breeders Cockers are very sturdy, healthy little dogs. Over the years some cases of the following hereditary diseaseshave been recorded, including Progressive Retinal Atrophy and hip dysplasia. Dedicated reputable breeders are now able to utilise DNAtesting for many of these diseases, epilepsy, auto-immune diseases and deafness have also on occasions been recorded in the breed.

Clubs interested in gaining commission by working in the Dogs SA Canteen on All Breeds Championship Show days are invited to contact the Canteen Manager, Margaret Bush on 0447 478 371 to arrange suitable dates.
Clubs must provide at least five people with three preparing food and serving in the canteen and two cooking and serving the BBQ. It is possible for 2 Clubs to work together to provide enough volunteers.
