For those that visit David Roche Park you would have noticed there are several areas which are currently not being watered by the current irrigation system. We recently had an audit conducted of the system by an irrigation specialist and they have provided us with a cost to rectify the issue. Works for this will be commencing at the end of January so there will be some disruptions on the grounds whilst this work is being completed. If you come to the grounds whilst the works are being completed, please obey any instructions given by the contractors as it will be for your own safety.
The extreme hot weather is also causing issues with the gum trees losing branches. Unless you consider it absolutely necessary I would advise against parking under them. The branches are being cleared as they fall however this does not make best practice for parking.
On the 31 January 2026 there is a meeting of the members to discuss the proposed changes to the Dog and Cat Management Regulations and the Standards and Guidelines for Breeding and Trading in Companion Animals. Although there are quite a number of amendments to both, there are only a couple of amendments that may have a significant effect on the operations of Dogs SA and our members. As responsible breeders many of these changes we already have in our Code of Ethics. The principal changes which may affect us are as follows:
• Surgical artificial insemination (SAI) must not be performed on bitches or queens under any circumstances for the purpose of breeding.
• All animals must have a general health examination by a veterinarian at least annually.
• A bitch or queen must not be mated after reaching six (6) years of age.
• Breeder licensing and method of recording.
There are also a number of unknowns which were not articulated in the information packages made available by the Dog and Cat Management Board.
Dogs SA is urging all members to get onboard and complete the survey at https://yoursay.sa.gov.au/breeder-regulations-standards . Also talk to family, friends and acquaintances to complete the survey as this survey is not just for us or other breeders, any person can make representation on the survey including those which consider the keeping, breeding and owning of companion animals should be banned.
After the meeting on the 31 January Dogs SA will also complete a consolidated response to the proposed amendments which will be sent direct to the DCMB and the Minister for the Environment the Honorable Lucy Hood. The Survey closes 13 February 2026.
The hot weather is well and truly upon us so stay safe and ensure your animals are kept well sheltered and watered. For those living in a bush fire area, ensure you have a survival plan and rehearse it.

Dogs SA AGM Agenda
18 March 2026
Due to updates to Dogs Australia Regulations, the Dogs SA Constitution has been removed from the Agenda for the Annual General Meeting to be held on 18 March 2026.
As the amended Dogs Australia Regulations may impact the proposed By-Laws that accompany the Constitution, these documents cannot be finalised until the preceding regulatory matters are resolved.
Dogs SA Council anticipates that a Special General Meeting will be convened later in 2026 to consider the Constitution once all relevant documents have been finalised.

Many improvements were implemented throughout 2025, including the installation of extensive additional solar panels and batteries.
New bright blue benches made from recycled plastic were installed around the showrings, giving the venue a fresh and modern appearance.
LED lighting was installed in both the Hall and the Judges Training Room.
The hot water services in the Marsula kitchen and the Bar were replaced, and the Canteen’s boiling water unit was upgraded. Further improvements to the main building included the installation of evaporative air conditioning in the Canteen and a sliding door separating the Canteen from the Bar. A standing freezer was also purchased for the Canteen, allowing chest freezers to be dedicated to storing fried goods. In addition, a second defibrillator was purchased and installed in the Kerry Loo, with the original unit relocated from the Bar foyer to the Marsula Brine building.
The Hospitality Centre continues to be managed by Margaret Bush, and the organisation extends its sincere appreciation for her ongoing and highly valued volunteer service. The combined profit generated by the Canteen and Bar was approximately $12,550 with a further $17,870 paid to affiliated Clubs in commission.
Council ran a Working Bee in December for the first time in many years, which was considered a great success. Councillors Brian Parker, Peter Thompson, Brian Fielder, John De Lucia, Nick Gouzos and Richard Chapman-Stevens were all in attendance, with extensive clean-up works undertaken in the gardens and sheds. Council would like to express its sincere appreciation to the members who volunteered their time and efforts, contributing to the success of this initiative. The Dogs Australia Conference was held in Melbourne in October and the AGM and Board Meeting was attended by President Brian Parker and Vice President Peter Thompson. For the first time, Dogs SA achieved 10% of the Australiawide ANKC membership, thereby securing the entitlement to appoint a second Director to the Dogs Australia Board. Executive Officer Cheryl Currie attended the Dogs Australia Administrators’ Conference.
The Investigation Committee heard a total of 21 hearings during the year compared to 16 hearings the year before. Dogs SA acknowledges and sincerely appreciates the tireless and often unrewarding nature of the role undertaken by Committee members. Their dedication, professionalism, and commitment in often trying circumstances is to be highly commended.
Council extends its sincere appreciation to the Conformation Judges’ Training Panel for delivering lectures via Zoom across more than fifty evenings collectively. In addition, two Practical Handling days were conducted to complement the theoretical component of the program. This training program relies entirely on the dedication of volunteers who generously provide their time and expertise to facilitate learning. Both the Theory and Practical exams were held a month earlier than usual this year. Seventeen Trainee and Aspirant Judges sat the Theory exam, with six achieving a pass, while the Practical exams were more successful, with eight of ten candidates passing.
Council extends its sincere gratitude to the many volunteers whose efforts enable the Trial Advisory Committees to provide judge training and mentorship programs. Their extensive contributions to the trial community include supporting State Championships, Nationals, and contributing to National Rule Reviews. Thanks to their dedication, most disciplines continue to flourish, and the ongoing support from volunteers, judges, and trainers ensures the continued growth and success of the sport.
Finally, Council acknowledges the generosity of members who provided their dogs for Judge training and exams at these events. Without their support, the training program could not take place. Dogs SA sincerely thanks all members who contribute to the ongoing success of these schemes. Dogs SA Committees conducted multiple Conformation events throughout the year, all of which were highly successful. The Junior Handler Committee Shows, including the Junior Handler State Final, were once again exceptionally well run and received high commendation. The DOTY, POTY, and NOTY Committees hosted their Fundraising Shows, with their Main Events proving popular and thoroughly enjoyed by the qualified competitors.
The “Best Show in Australia,” the BlackHawk Winter International, once again drew a record-breaking entry from across the country, with perfect weather adding to the spectacle. For the first time in South Australia, a grooming competition was held alongside the show at Dogs SA, turning five days of dog excellence into an unforgettable celebration and competition for competitors and spectators alike.
The Dogs SA Committees continue to deliver world-class events. We commend all organisers and volunteers for their exceptional dedication, enthusiasm, and effort in upholding the high standards that have become synonymous with Dogs SA.
Dogs SA promotion activities proved popular with the public, with the Royal Show stand operating for the entire duration of the Show. Dogs SA staff manned the stand on weekdays alongside a volunteer, while volunteers staffed the stand across both weekends. This level of exposure, and the opportunity to educate the public and showcase the vast and diverse range of activities Dogs SA offers dog lovers, is unsurpassed. In addition to the Royal Show, Dogs SA also hosted stands at the Adelaide Animal Expo and Dogs Day Out, both of which were managed by Councillor Brian Fielder. Knose Pet Insurance continues to be a highly valued sponsor of Dogs SA, delivering tangible benefits to Members through discounted pet insurance rates and the provision of complimentary pet insurance for puppies as they leave for their new homes. This outstanding initiative offers registered breeders an excellent opportunity to add real value for new puppy owners, ensuring puppies are supported from day one with their new families. Knose Pet Insurance was a major sponsor of the Dogs SA Winter International during the year, and Dogs SA is pleased to confirm this valued partnership will continue into 2026.
The Dogs SA Office farewelled Finance Officer Mahajabin Nova in March after nearly three years of dedicated service. We warmly welcomed our new Finance Officer, Nigel Callaghan, who commenced in April and has quickly become a valued member of the team. Earlier in the year, Ann Farndell continued working on a casual basis for two days each week but has now retired permanently following the arrival of a new puppy. She is enjoying her time with her Shelties and tending her garden, though we appreciate she remains available to provide advice if needed. We take pride in our knowledgeable and dedicated staff, who combine expertise with a welcoming approach, always ready to support you whenever required.
Dogs SA successfully leased the front carpark to a local business for a four-month period late in the year, generating additional weekday income. As the grounds and facilities continue to be developed, it is anticipated that similar opportunities will be welcomed in the future.
With ongoing enhancements, Members will benefit from an even wider range of training opportunities on Dogs SA grounds. Currently, regular training is offered in Show Handling, Obedience, Dancing with Dogs, Tricks, and Hoopers. Both training and competition opportunities are expected to continue growing in the coming years, as additional activities make use of our expanding facilities.
2025 OBEDIENCE ADVISORY REPORT
2025 has been a good year for the OAC with strong involvement and significant events in the development of the next versions of the Obedience and Rally Rule books to take effect on 1 January 2026. Again, it is great that there have been new faces in the earlier trial classes and I look forward to their ongoing participation and involvement in the sports of Obedience and Rally trials and Endurance tests. I thank very sincerely the OAC members: Julie Brown; Peter
Dynan; Annette Railz, Sue Laidler and Lyn Fielden. Julie’s support in managing our social sites (Facebook and Web) is a major role. I thank Council and the staff of DogsSA for ongoing support. Annette has been a strong contributor taking on the role of trial manager for the State Championships. Lyn Feilden’s ongoing work as the Trial Secretary for the State Championships and as the Registrar have meant significant involvement.
Annette and Lyn were instrumental in delivering another successful State Championship, our major event of the year. Again, thanks also to the SAODC for their outstanding support of the State Championships.
This year we have been active in the following areas: Obedience and Rally rules reviews; completion of a draft Stewards Guide for Obedience and Rally; and Judges training.
The judges training program this year has attracted 2 new aspiring judges for Novice and CCD - Sharon Kolze and Alex Capes, with Karen Moralee as an aspiring Utility judge. We also have an aspiring Open and Rally judge in Donna Vigor. Thanks go to Brian Fielder and Lynn Stapylton for being a judge’s trainers and Tony Brennan for the involvement on the Judges assessment panel.
I thank all of our Club’s and their committees and volunteers, particularly those that offer obedience and rally trials, those that keep our sport active through their competing, our judges who ensure that competition is maintained and the staff of Dogs SA for their support and assistance.
I take this chance to urge and invite anyone interested in maintaining the future of our sports to consider becoming more actively involved in OAC activities either on the committee, as a steward or judge. Obedience has been a key sport in the canine world for over 70 years in South Australia and its future without the support of Dogs SA, our clubs and you as a collective of individuals who value what it offers by way of competition and comraderie is limited. I believe we need to make access to a pathway for judges more appropriate and accessible as do other dog sports.
I take this opportunity to thank the membership and the OAC committee for their support this year. I look forward to seeing you as we move into the next season with introductory sessions on the new rules beginning in December .
Neil MacDonald Chair OAC
2025 AGILITY ADVISORY REPORT
2025 was a busy year for the AAC. This report gives a very brief overview of our activities.
Measurement of Dogs
The committee and in particular Lyn Fuller were responsible for organising and measuring 47 dogs.
State Agility Jumping and Games Trials
The State Agility and Jumping Trial, held on the June Long weekend was a success with 1633 entries, despite the cancellation of the second half of the first day due to storms. We attracted many interstate competitors. There were many things which the committee learned from the experience, which have been recorded and will be handed on to the next committee, to assist in continuing to improve the event. I
would like to particularly thank Eleanor for all her hard work in organising and running the State trials. Jenny for arranging sponsorship and the rest of the committee for their hard work on the days prior to and after the trial. The Port Lincoln crew certainly worked hard throughout the whole 3 days.
Timing Gates
The timing gates were all tested at the beginning of the year and we investigated the possibility of having them serviced. However, we were advised by experts that there was no advantage to servicing the gates as they are electronic not mechanical devices. But the Committee began the process of investigating the purchase of new gates in a scheduled fashion.
Preparation for the Nationals
The committee has spent much time investigating possible venues and this work continues. It is planned to establish a subcommittee in 2026, but this will be a responsibility for the new committee.
Injury Reporting form
The committee has developed a form which has just been approved by council to report injuries occurring to dogs in training or competition. These will be anonymously recorded, results collated and any possible contributing factors analysed. Interestingly we began this process prior to discovering several International organisations were in the process of doing the same thing. This form with instructions will be loaded online and also sent to all clubs. Completed forms can be sent to the secretary.
Agility Safety Guidelines
The Agility Safety Guidelines have been rewritten and will be updated in accordance with the new rules. They will then be submitted to DogsSA for approval and then be available online.
ANKC Rules review
A lot of work was put into the ANKC rules review. A meeting was chaired by Peter Dynan for competitors and the views of the SA agility community as represented at the meeting was painstakingly recorded by Eleanor, and taken to the National meeting by myself as the SA delegate. Delegates from other states also had clear voting instructions from their communities. The process continued well after the National meeting with the rewriting of the rule book. It is important to note that no changes can be made to a rule without a proposal being submitted and passed by the majority of states as well as the majority of votes. For the first time SA had two votes due to its membership numbers. There will be many changes for 2026, not all supported by SA. However, there are many new rules which I believe will advance the sport and increase safety. The rule review process was time consuming and a process of some compromise as no one state’s proposals were uniformly supported. It is a very useful process to aid in the understanding of the challenges the sport is facing across Australia. I was also asked to be on the committee to review Overseas judges’ courses for use in Australia. This process is to ensure that the courses comply with the ANKC rules. At this stage the rules are still pending.
Royal Adelaide Show Dogs SA Agility Fun Day
This year for the first time an event to show case dog agility and encourage the participation of young handlers was held in the main arena of the Royal Adelaide Show. Eight dogs
and their handlers participated in the event. There was a good range of sizes of dogs and breeds. The dogs included a Terrier, Cocker Spaniel, Kelpie, Corgi, Poodle and three Border Collies. There were three sessions which each lasted about 45 minutes. Children from the crowd over the age of 10 were asked if they would like to run a dog with the handler. The short course was made up of 4 jumps, a tunnel, a hoop and weavers. The sessions were extremely popular, and many children wanted to run more than once. Some returned for all 3 sessions. Many children entered the ring looking very shy and nervous but after their run with the dog were very proud of themselves and happy. The event was a success, and we anticipate it introduced the sport to a new generation of agility handlers.
Judges Training
The committee are in the process of developing a judges training scheme for 2026. This work will be handed on to the new committee.
Handover
The committee has endeavoured to ensure that the various roles and what they entail is clearly recorded for future committees, so a more seamless handover is possible and we all learn from past experiences.
Survey
The current rules for the end of year awards need to be reviewed. In order to do this we created an online survey. It was constructed using Sogolytics. Current SA Agility Competitors were invited to opt in through a FB posting. All SA agility clubs were also sent a message to notify any one not on FB who wanted to participate to contact me. There were a total of 122 possible participants identified using catalogues. Of those by the 14/10, sixty one people had responded. A response rate of 50%. The responses will be used to rewrite the rules according to majority view.
Congratulations to our three new agility Champions
Katie Warland’s Albajail Fair Maiden Agility Champion 500, Deb Karutz’s Archer Agility Champion 400 and at the end of this year Nat Mudge and Aurora Agility Champion 500.

2025 TRACKING ADVISORY REPORT
I would like to thank the Committee I worked with in 2025, Teresa Shanahan our Secretary, Ian Murrell, Nick West and Allison Wells.
Tracking Discipline
There was an anomaly noted by the Committee in the new Tracking Rules in the area of Judges practical and the Committee through dogssa requested the National Committee resolve this. (Type of tracks that trainees were to be examined on had not been updated to reflect the inclusion of a Tracking grand Champion Title). This has now been fixed. The training Manuals for both Tracking and Track and Search have been updated to reflect the new 2025 Rules.
In South Australia for the 2025 season five dogs achieved the title of Tracking Grand Champion, Six dogs gained Championship Titles, one gained a TDX title, and three, TD titles. Four trials were run in South Australia.
Track and Search Discipline
For the 2024 season, Six dogs achieved Track and Search Grand Champion, there were 4 dogs that achieved a Championship title, seven TSDX , four TSD titles and one TSD title.
Only the Tracking Dog Club of SA Inc conducted Tracking or Track and Search trials in 2025. No new Judges or trainees were added to the roster, if anyone has an interest in Judging in either or both of these disciplines please approach any of the Advisory Committee members.
I would also like to thank the EO Cheryl Currie and her staff for all the assistance provided to the Advisory in 2025.
Josie Miller Chair TAC
2025 SCENTWORK ADVISORY REPORT
Scent Work in South Australia continues to go from strength to strength, with participation continuing to grow. In the period 1st January 2025 to 31st October, 25 Scent Work trials were held in South Australia, noting that some of those trials were held over two or more days to accommodate as many classes as possible. We also have a number of trials coming up, making the last two months of the year very busy one.
The biggest trial for the year was the very successful South Australian State Trial held in June where we offered all 17 classes and had 612 entries. It really was a massive event and thanks to all of the members of the SWAC for their incredible effort and hard work to bring the trial together. In particular massive thank you to Carmel Nottle who undertook the role of Trial Secretary, while Donna Golding and Julie Wallis ‘tagteamed’ as Trial Managers. The trial attracted competitors from near and far, with the interstate competitors turning up in good numbers to support the trial. Everyone was very positive, with a number of people who had not seen this sport commenting on how supportive everyone was of each other and how positive the vibe was with the competitors in the car park. Well done to all the competitors who competed and contributed to a fun three days.
We were very fortunate to have great sponsors who were
very generous in their support of the StateTrial as well as so many people who donated rosettes. The first two days were held here at the Dogs SA grounds and many thanks to the Dogs SA staff who were so helpful in making sure we had everything we needed for the trial to run smoothly. We were able to use a new venue for part of the Trial, with Gumhaven Aqua allowing us to use their property on the Sunday. A huge thank you to Tony Wallis for the use of this venue and Donna Golding who facilitated this.
At the end of last year the Scent Work Advisory Committee (SWAC) decided to focus on how we could better support competitors and judges so that we can continue to grow and improve in this sport. We recognised this was not just about encouraging new people into the sport, but also about helping competitors move through the higher levels of competing with their dog, about judge training and about supporting instructors at Dogs SA Affiliated Clubs. Carmel Nottle took on the role of Training and Judges Training Coordinator and will report separately on the many training events the SWAC have held this year. Many thanks to Carmel for all of her work in organising the program of workshops and mock trials and also for the “Rule Check Wednesday” on the Facebook page which has proven to be a great source of valuable information for everyone.
The Scent Work SA Facebook page is very active and continues to be the source of “all things Scent Work’ in South Australia. At the start of the year we made changes to the page so that members could post direct to the page without waiting for admin approval – this has meant posts appear immediately and has facilitated the flow of information. A huge thank you to Fay Mullan who has maintained the calendar of trials and demos on that page.
Congratulations to everyone who achieved a Scent Work title with their dog this year. In March the SWAC introduced title sashes which have proven very popular. Thank you to Julie Wallis who organised the raffle in conjunction with the State Trial to fund this initiative. We have recently reordered Novice, Excellent, Masters and Advanced title sashes and if anyone is due a title sash and has not received one, please speak to me after the meeting.
There have been a number of Scent Work demonstrations held this year. Demonstrations are very important opportunities to show what our dogs can do, to encourage people to have a go at a dog sport with their own dog and to continue to promote dog ownership and activities to the general public. Thank you to Jean Milnes who organised the demo teams and all who participated in the demos held at Mt Barker Show in March, the Royal Adelaide Show and Callington Show. The support of Dogs SA in purchasing matching shirts for the members of the demo team is acknowledged and the team members really did look great at the Royal Show on the Main Arena on the last day of the Show.
We will shortly move into the agenda item for nominations for the SWAC for next year. Two members of the SWAC have advised they will not be continuing next year - Helen Irving and Jean Milnes. Helen joined the SWAC last year and we thank her for her work throughout the year. In addition to the SWAC, Helen is incredibly busy running trials at Southern Districts. Helen has advised she believes Scent Work is in a good place and has decided to stand for a different Advisory Committee next year. Jean Milnes has been a member of the SWAC for a number of years and has decided it is time to stand down. Jean has served as our secretary, organiser
of demonstration teams and demonstrations, hosted our interstate judge for the June trial and so many other roles. Jean is not lost to us as Jean has advised she is happy to continue to help with organising the demo teams for us. Thank you Jean and Helen for your work on the SWAC and we wish you well in the future.
Finally I’d like to thank all of the many volunteers who help out at Scent work events, whether its trials, workshops or demonstrations – without you we could not do what we do, so a very big thank you for so willingly giving up your time for this sport and because of you, Scent Work has a bright future.
Lynne Stapylton – Chair SWAC
2025 DANCES WITH DOGS & TRICKS ADVISORY REPORT
As we draw 2025 to a close, I am pleased to present this report on the activities and achievements of the Dances with Dogs and Trick Dog Test community in South Australia. This year has been marked by strong participation, and continued growth across all aspects of our disciplines.
I would like to begin by acknowledging the dedicated members of the DWD Advisory Committee: Tegan Whalan, Lynne Stapylton, Michelle Smith, Jane Di Fava, Elaine Kennedy, and Jeannine Lampe. Their ongoing commitment, dedication, and reliability have underpinned everything we have accomplished this year.
A special acknowledgement goes to Lynne Stapylton, who served as our Dogs SA delegate to the ANKC National DWD Committee (incorporating TDT). Lynne has given exceptional service in this role, and she has also led the Trick Dog Judges Training Program with professionalism and enthusiasm. By the end of the year, four judges’ training sessions will have been delivered for our ANKC judges—two each for DWD and TDT. Sincere thanks go to Jane Di Fava for coordinating and running the DWD training sessions, and to Lynne Stapylton for leading the Trick Dog Tests judges’ training. A great deal of time and care has gone into selecting suitable dates and preparing high-quality content for discussion. Thank you also to the judges for their participation and for their commitment to developing and refining their skills.
This year we were delighted to welcome four trainee Trick Dog Test judges: Penny Pardoe-Matthews, Michelle Smith, Alan Kennedy, and Angie Shepherd. Under Lynne Stapylton’s leadership, they undertook an extensive training program. We thank the mentors and the trainees for their dedication. Nine mentoring sessions where run by Lynne in total. Competitors at all levels generously attended to provide dogs for judging practice—even braving a night of voracious mosquitos.
Theory exams were held on 1 November, with practical exams scheduled for 24 and 27 November. We wish them all the best.
This year saw numerous DWD competitions and Trick Dog Tests conducted across the state. We formally thank the following Clubs for hosting and supporting these events:
• Dances with Dogs Club of South Australia
• Gawler Dog Training Club
• Royal Agricultural & Horticultural Society
• Riverland Dog Training and Kennel Club
• South Australian Obedience Dog Club
• Southern Districts Kennel & Obedience Dog Club
• Noarlunga City Obedience Dog Club
• Para District Obedience Dog Club
• Blue Lake Obedience Dog Club
• Border Collie Club of South Australia
Our sport is built on the combined efforts of many individuals, and I wish to formally recognise the clubs, trainers, officials, and volunteers whose work enables our competitions and tests to take place. Their generosity in providing training, organising events, mentoring, judging, stewarding, and supporting competitors is invaluable. We sincerely thank the clubs who hosted competitions and tests throughout the year. Congratulations to all the competitors and their amazing dogs who competed and trained.
State Championships in both DWD and TDT were held this year. Despite the unexpected challenge of securing a new venue at short notice, the Championships proceeded successfully at the Virginia Community Centre on 12 April and at David Roche Park on 13 April. My thanks go to the DWDAC, with special mention going to Tegan Whalan, Michelle Smith and Lynne Stapylton for their management and our gratitude to the judges, officials, ring crew, volunteers, and of course the competitors, whose skill and sportsmanship ensured the success of the events. The Trick Dog Test State Championships were held under challenging weather conditions, though ran smoothly thanks to thorough planning by Lynne Stapylton and the teamwork of the committee and many helpers.
The committee ran four workshops this year, starting with Judy Gamet via Zoom with live participation in the King’s Room, followed by a workshop with Maree Field and Loretta Rabbit during the State Championships, a day of one-on-one sessions with Tegan Whalan tailored to individual competitors, and an introductory session for DWD newcomers, delivered via Zoom and in person.
Looking forward, preparations are underway for our 2026 State Championships and—most notably—for hosting the 2027 Dances with Dogs and Trick Dog Test National Championships, following Dogs SA’s successful bid for the event. We thank Dogs SA for supporting our proposal. The Tanunda Show Hall has been secured as the spacious and exciting venue for this prestigious event.
This year also marks a change within the committee. Tegan Whalan, after eight years of exceptional service—including time as Chair—will be stepping down. We sincerely thank her for her dedication and are grateful that she will continue contributing through workshops and training sessions. Her next workshop Strong Starts and Flashy Finishes will be held on 18 January.
In closing, I wish to formally thank Cheryl Currie, Simon, Nigel, Rachael, and the entire Dogs SA Office team. Their support, responsiveness, and professionalism are essential to our operations, and we value their assistance greatly. We are also grateful to the Dogs SA Council for their continued support.
Thank you to everyone—competitors, judges, helpers, trainers, clubs, and committee members—for your contributions to an exceptionally successful year. Your commitment and enthusiasm continue to strengthen our sport, and I look forward to the opportunities ahead. Thanks again to the DWDAC Team.

2025 LURE COURSING ADVISORY REPORT
During the 2024/2025 financial year, the Adelaide Lure Coursing and Racing Club has continued to be the sole club hosting lure coursing events in South Australia. The club has seen new younger people heavily involved in the implementation and running of the trials.
Over the past twelve months, South Australia has welcomed two newly qualified judges, and three more individuals have entered the Judges Training Program, reflecting strong interest in the continued development of the sport’s officiating capacity. A new judges examination has been developed to align with the 2025 rules. Additionally, the Lure Operators (Drivers) Training Program has been strengthened to ensure the safety and consistency of trial operations.
The Lure Coursing State Advisory has remained active, meeting regularly to implement infrastructure and strategic planning aimed at securing the long-term future of the sport. Their efforts have laid important groundwork for the sustainable expansion of lure coursing across the state.
One of the most encouraging developments has been the continued high participation of new participants. This inclusivity has been further boosted by the introduction of Sprintdog™, which has attracted a broader base of participants and generated increased interest in Lure Coursing. Non-Sighthounds are still the main participant in South Australia however over the last 12 months we have had some new and rare Sighthound breeds enter trials.
Trials over this period have featured a combination of local and interstate judges, enhancing the quality and diversity of officiating. Several South Australian members have also taken part in lectures led by international lure coursing Judge Per Nordahl, organised by Queensland, bringing valuable insights back to the local community.
Interstate competitors have been warmly welcomed, contributing to the vibrancy and competitiveness of South Australian events. In total, five successful trials have been conducted across two fields during the 2024/2025 financial year. South Australia continues to engage in continuous improvement with several new strategies being implemented this year.
To address this, the Adelaide Lure Coursing and Racing Club continues to explore new locations to host future events. “Come and Try” days have proven especially effective in attracting newcomers, and we are seeing a steady increase in new participants eager to course their dogs. The club’s committee continues to work tirelessly to deliver outstanding trials. With a diverse membership of both Sighthound and non-Sighthound owners, the committee maintains a strong focus on inclusion and participation. The club fosters genuine friendships among members, offers delicious catering, presents creative and fun rosettes, and creates an energetic and competitive atmosphere that keeps participants coming back.
Dogs SA staff have remained closely involved with the Lure Coursing State Advisory and have been highly supportive of the sport’s development. Their engagement and commitment have played a vital role in ensuring the ongoing success and visibility of lure coursing in South Australia.
SprintDog
South Australia held 8 trials in the 2024/2025 financial year,
with 4 trials scheduled for September 2025. The popularity of Sprintdog™, along with new clubs coming on board, is expected to result in a significant increase in trials.
We have 4 judges in South Australia, with another 3 completing their logbook and expected to be qualified judges in the foreseeable future.
The Lure Coursing State Advisory, which has primary responsibility for Sprintdog™, has met several times and continues to resolve matters informally via an active group chat.
The Sprintdog™ judges examination was developed in collaboration with Dogs SA.
The Sprintdog™ Lure Operators training program has been constructed, with several trainees currently involved.
In 2024, we had 1 club running trials; in 2025, we have 3 clubs running trials and another 2 in the process of preparing.
SprintDog™ has had a demonstrable uptake across all groups, with a particular notable presence of rare and endangered breeds participating.
SprintDog™ has been called “The gateway sport” with the accessibility and culture serving to promote other sports such as scent, tricks and lure in South Australia.
Sprintdog™ has been held in Roseworthy, Salisbury Plain, Bucklands Park, Noarlunga, and Barmera (Riverland).
Special mention to the Adelaide Lure Coursing and Racing Club, who have made their equipment available at an affordable hire fee to other clubs.
Dogs SA continue to investigate the establishment of a Sprintdog™ track on their grounds which would be a welcomed infrastructure for the running of the sport.
Dogs SA continues to be a huge support in the establishment of Sprintdog™ in South Australia. With such support, the future of Sprintdog™ in South Australia is bright.

2025 RETRIEVING & FIELD ADVISORY REPORT
The Retrieving and Field Advisory Committee administers for several small sports, but unfortunately the Field disciplines have generally disappeared in this state. However, a few hardy souls compete in Field interstate, and there has been interest in redeveloping a local Field competition subject to appropriate support from DogsSA. The two surviving disciplines are Retrieving Trials for Gundogs and Retrieving Ability Tests for Gundogs (RATG).
The Gundog Club organised a weekend of 4 RATG trials. These trials are a stepping stone to the more demanding Retrieving trials. The Retrieving and Field Trials Club of SA (RAFTCOSA) also ran two RATG trials on the one day. Retrieving trials have been held in this state for at least 60 years, but the breed clubs that originally supported the sport have dropped out one by one owing to the difficulties of running the trials. The main club running trials is RAFTCOSA. A small committee has worked hard to run eight days of trialling (four weekends). The Weimaraner Club also ran a day on the June long weekend in conjunction with RAFTCOSA. Breeds competing this year include Springer Spaniel,
Hungarian Wirehaired Vizsla, Murray River Retriever, German Shorthaired Pointer, Weimaraner, Golden Retriever and Labrador Retriever. Dogs competing in Retrieving trials must be pure bred and from Group 3. This rule is relaxed a little for RATGs to allow approved group 3 dogs on the Associate Register to compete. It should be noted here that following the last rule changes Associate Registered Dogs who have obtained an Open Retrieving Ability (ORA) title shall be permitted to compete in Retrieving Trials up to and including Restricted Stakes.
Every year Dogs SA holds a Retrieving State Championship. This year it was held on the grounds of Barmera and Moorook Field and Game with Greg Playdon (Vic) judging. The trial was won by Russell Best (Vic) with his Labrador bitch Richfields Rubys A Gem. Thanks go to John Nairn for the arduous task of Trial Managing, and the hardworking team of organisers and stewards.
Last year much time was taken over a major revamp of the rules, and this was carried over into this year. Luckily this was completed in time before our trials started here in SA. We need to run the trials on properties that have the scope to allow several stakes to be run simultaneously, and some of the retrieves can be up to 150 metres in length. Large areas are needed and swimming water is also required for each stake. For many years our trials have only existed because of the generosity of property owners who allow us to roam (and even camp). We would like to hear from anybody who thinks they may know of a property that may be suitable. The low number of SA judges is a major problem. We are indebted to interstate judges who supported us this year. I am pleased to notify that Chistine Hayes has been approved to judge RATG trials.
Two of our RAFT Advisory members were unfortunately unable to complete the year leaving the Committee short of numbers. I would personally like to thank Lynne Webster and Jessie Hughes for the help they have given although not official members.
The way most triallers cheerfully helped out with stewarding at trials was most encouraging and necessary for the sport’s survival. Many thanks to all those who have supported retrieving in South Australia this year.
Jeff Patrick - Chair RAFTAC
2025 EARTHDOG ADVISORY REPORT
The Earthdog community in South Australia as well as the advisory committee are in a ‘healthy’ place, and this is due to the work of the voluntary committee of the advisory.
In particular, thanks must be given to Stephen Janes who has provided exceptional support to the EDAC over the last two years. Stephen has taken on treasury and secretary functions for the committee, which is a substantial amount of work in which I am most grateful. Stephen also did the majority of the work on organising our new fence. This has been an excellent face lift for our earthdog area and of course has been highly functional as well.
Thanks are also owed to Brianna Mollison (nee Mackay) for her role as trial secretary throughout the year. Brianna is new to these functions and has taken on the role exceptionally, including giving the schedules a much needed ‘face lift’ and
also bringing the committee into the current era by organising Top Dog Entries for our events.
I would like to acknowledge outgoing committee member, Clynton Whalan, who has contributed significantly to the division of Strong Dog in South Australia. Clynton built the specialised curved tunnels for this division, and has made many prototypes for the quarry. This has included Clynton hand-stitching pelts with weight inside! And making many changes as required. Without Clynton’s contribution to Strong Dog, it’s unlikely that this division would have been embraced as it has in South Australia. Clynton has decided not to renominate for the committee next year and we extend our thanks for his contributions to the sport.
Our other committee members have also supported the sport in South Australia. This includes Christine Koch undertaking judging appointments, Julie Hocking and Barbara Chapman helping on test days, including Barbara’s fundraising efforts this year. Thank you to all committee members, who have approached the meetings and our sport with a good attitude and a commitment to the sport and its success.
Thank you also to Daniel McLoughlin who has judged at numerous events and also helped provide Strong Dog training alongside Brianna Mollison during this season.
Thanks also to Lisa McGinn (Tasmania) who judged in South Australia this year.
Summary of Entries and Titles
The Earthdog Advisory Committee has run 3 test days, totalling 9 tests. Each test included the division of Strong Dog. I also supported the Terrier Club of SA Inc in holding 2 test days totalling 6 tests.
There were a total of 166 entries across the 15 tests, seeing an average of just over 11 entries per test. This is slightly higher than last year.
This year, there was far more diversity in the breeds entered in tests. We had a number of associate as well as pedigree dogs participate, with breeds including:
• Border Terrier,
• Dachshund,
• Jack Russell Terrier,
• Miniature Pinscher,
• Parson Russell Terrier, and
• Tenterfield Terrier.
Over the course of the year, 10 South Australian dogs earned their Earthdog titles. There were two titles gained at all levels of Earthdog and at Strong Dog Instinct level. No champion or grand champion titles were awarded this year, but two dogs are close to their championship titles at the end of the 2025 season.
This year in South Australia, we had 5 Strong Dog Instinct passes. There are more passes in this division than seen previously, showing that there is potential for success and growth in this division.
Training
The committee ran two training days on Saturday 10 May and Sunday 11 May. These days were well attended and generated income for the committee.
The committee also offered smaller training days, just for Strong Dog, on Thursday 4 September and Thursday 11 September. This training was only offered to dogs who had
participated in earthdog throughout the season to ensure that numbers attending were manageable. Thank you to Daniel McLoughlin and Brianna Mollison for your role in this training.
Bale Hunt Subcommittee
Late this year, the inaugural meeting of the Bale Hunt Subcommittee was held. At this stage, the subcommittee is led by Jane Humphrey, with the subcommittee composed of: Belinda Hameister, Georgi Roberts, Jo Webb, Michelle Horne, Moira Hicks, Sue Swalling, and Tammy McClelland. The advisory committee has identified many logistical problems with Bale Hunt and hope that the new committee can find creative ways to resolve these issues and make the fledgling sport a success in South Australia.
2026 and Beyond
Dogs SA is currently building a SprintDog track that runs abutted to the Earthdog area. The committee is hopeful that the new fencing for this track will allow for the Master Earthdog walkup to be conducted in an enclosed space, improving competitor safety. Ongoing liaising will be necessary by the incoming committee.
There are still very few judges for Earthdog in South Australia, and the committee would encourage anyone who is eligible to consider applying.
For myself, I have decided not to renominate for the committee in 2026. I have been involved in Earthdog’s establishment as a sport in South Australia, working with Brigitte Walkey since at least 2008. The Advisory Committee was formed soon after, and I have been an active member on the committee since then. That is, I have been active in the establishment, maintenance, and promotion of Earthdog in South Australia for approximately 17 years. I have competed with approximately 13 different border terriers in the sport, with approximately 37 individual titles across those dogs. This includes multiple champions and two grand champions. I intend to continue to participate in Earthdog as both a competitor and a judge. Further, I hope to continue to work as trial secretary for Earthdog tests run by the Terrier Club of South Australia. I wish the advisory committee and the sport of Earthdog all successes in the coming years. It should also be noted that the role of state representative will also be left vacant with my decision to not nominate. The new committee will need to establish a new state representative. Despite vacating this role, I will assist with local rule review processes in 2026 if required by the new committee.
Tegan Whalan - Chair EAC
2025 HERDING ADVISORY REPORT
The Herding State Trials were held on Friday 22nd, Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th of August 2025, the first state trials in quite a number of years. A fabulous time was had by all with some lovely work by some exceptional dogs and their handlers. There was some friendly rivalry with some interstate competition and a great deal of camaraderie. The committee would like to thank all the support and help for the 3 day double trials with A and B course Sheep, A course Cattle and A & B course Ducks offered. The stock were well conditioned and our venues were top notch.

Best of Breed / Challenge Certificates – as from 1st July 2025
Due to certificates now being available from Show Manager, it is no longer a requirement for Conformation Clubs to print certificates for exhibitors that do not require a hard copy.
Application for Conformation Titles can now be applied for with the point list from either of the online providers and there is no requirement for the hard copy certificate when lodged in this manner.
As from 1st July 2025, Conformation Certificates may only be available upon request at the event, on the day.
This enables exhibitors to continue applying for titles in the same manner they are familiar with if this is the preferred option.
If an exhibitor does not pick up their certificate on the day, the Club is not responsible to issue another one but can cooperate if they choose.
