Adelaide Royal Show entries have closed and again SA has bucked the trend of declining numbers. Overall the numbers for the Dog Section are up on 2024 which is very pleasing to see. As a special note the Dog Committee are working with the Agility fraternity to host an Agility demonstration on the main arena on the final Sunday of the show. This will be a great opportunity to promote the sport and Dogs SA to the general public.
As from 01 July 2025 clubs are no longer required to print Best of Breed or Challenge Certificates unless requested. This regulation was introduced by Dogs Australia due to the online entry providers now being able to produce a list of challenges for your dogs which can be used to apply for your dogs titles without the physical certificates. It is also in consideration of reducing the costs on clubs as purchase of the certificates was considerable and many were just left after the show and not picked up. Although as an exhibitor you may not see a reduction in entry fees, it will assist clubs in not increasing fees.
The Adelaide Animal Expo was again a great success for Dogs SA and many of our affiliated clubs and individual members. Many thanks to Brian Fielder who was our chief organizer for the event. The demonstrations provided over the weekend were also well received from the public in attendance. There was also a competition held at the Expo by Dogs SA for the best presented exhibits. 1st Place was the Bernese Mountain Dog Club of SA, 2nd The Shiba Inu Exhibitors and 3rd The Welsh Corgi Club of SA. I am sure this will be a hotly contested award for next years event.
The Riverland Dog Training and Kennel Club again held a very successful weekend of Dog Sports at the Riverland Exhibition Centre. This follows the previous event there where the club hosted a Lure Coursing and Sprint Dog event in conjunction with other disciplines. Just shows what can be done by a relatively small club.
For those jetting off to the World Dog Show in Helsinki, Finland during August have a great time and safe travels.

Recently we have been experiencing issues with the A2O Show results documentation which we forward to the A2O Secretariat for processing. The Secretariat has advised the total number of entries appearing in the catalogue is required to be the same as the total number appearing in the top right-hand corner of the spreadsheet/word results document.
We have now received advice from the A2O Secretariat that whatever the total number of entries appears in the catalogue will be used for billing purposes. No exceptions will be allowed. The Secretariat further suggests as an alternative; clubs should supply separate A2O Show catalogues to other shows held in conjunction with the A2O Show.

A.CODE OF ETHICS FOR MEMBERS
Each Member shall comply with the following Code of Ethics and any Member who fails to do so shall be guilty of an offence against these Rules. Maximum Penalty $5000 (07/22)
As a Member of the South Australian Canine Association:
1. I shall ensure that at all times all dogs under my control are properly and effectively contained by fencing or enclosure, and are properly housed, fed, watered, exercised and given proper Veterinary attention if and when required.
2. I shall not allow any dogs under my care to roam at large, and, when away from home, ensure they are kept fully leashed and under effective control, or otherwise under effective control at all times. (01/16)
3. I shall breed only for the purpose of improving the quality of the breed in line with the breed standard and strive to eliminate hereditary diseases in the breed/s that I produce.
4. I shall strive to have all my breeding stock tested, where tests are available, for hereditary diseases.
5. The health and welfare of a bitch being bred from is of paramount importance and I will adhere to the following minimum standards. (01/20)
(a) No bitch owned by me and/or under my control be mated before she is twelve months of age or older as prescribed in the ANKC Ltd Regulations Part 6 (04/25)
(b) No bitch can be whelped more than twice in any 18-month period without the prior approval of the SACA. (04/25)
(c) No mother/son, father/daughter or brother/sister matings are allowed. Puppies from such matings will be registered on the Limited Register and flagged never to be upgraded. (04/25)
(d) No bitch is allowed more than 5 litters in her lifetime. Puppies from such matings will be registered on the Limited Register and flagged never to be upgraded. (04/25)
(e) No bitch over 8 years of age can be bred from unless at the time of mating there was a current veterinary certificate stating that the bitch is in good health. The veterinary certificate must be presented at the time of registering the litter resulting from this mating. A current veterinarian certificate is defined as a certificate dated within the three months prior to the mating. (04/25)
6. I shall not knowingly permit any of my pure bred dogs to be mated to a dog of a different breed, to a cross bred dog, or to an unregistered dog of the same breed, or to a dog of the same breed which is entered on the Limited Register, unless specific permission is given by the SACA.
7. I shall not sell or otherwise transfer from my care any puppy under eight weeks of age, thus allowing for vaccination to be given at six weeks of age and thereby allowing for the ten to fourteen days for the vaccine to take effect. Upon the disposal of the dog, I shall provide the owner with a current vaccination certificate of that dog issued by a Veterinary Surgeon. Accepted Veterinarian vaccination certificates are C3 12/36 months, C4, C5 or an annual Titre Test accompanied by a Veterinarian letter. (01/19)
8. I shall not knowingly sell or otherwise transfer from my care any dog that is not in good health.
9. I shall ensure that any puppy that is to be exported shall be a minimum of eleven weeks of age and micro-chipped. (01/12)
10. I shall ensure that all persons acquiring dogs from me clearly understand their responsibility for the care and welfare of the animal as defined in Clause 1 and 2 above. I shall not knowingly misrepresent the characteristics of the breed, nor falsely advertise, or mislead any person regarding the performance of any dog. I shall provide to all purchasers of dogs or those placed by me, written details of all dietary and vaccination requirements and responsible dog ownership and/or an appropriate publication relating to such requirements.
11. I shall not sell any dog to commercial dog wholesalers, retail pet dealers, or directly or indirectly to allow a dog to be given as a prize or donation in a contest of any kind or to be auctioned. (01/12)
12. I shall ensure that every dog in every litter I breed will be registered as required in the SACA Rules. (07/22)

At the June 2025 Dogs Australia Special Board meeting, Directors resolved/considered the following:
1. * Regulations Part 5 – Conformation Show, Clause 4.1.1
It was RESOLVED that Regulations Part 5 – Conformation Show, Clause 4.1.1 be amended as follows: Current Regulation:
4.1.1 No person shall exhibit a dog in any sanctioned conformation exhibition at which a judge who is a member of the competitor’s immediate family, or who resides at the same address, or who has had a proprietary interest in such dog whether solely or in partnership is scheduled to officiate Amend to read:
4.1.1 No person shall exhibit or handle a dog in any sanctioned conformation exhibition where at any stage during the competition it is possible for the dog to progress to a position where it will be officiated on by a judge that is scheduled to officiate. Where;
a. they are a member of the competitor’s immediate family; or
b. they reside at the same address; or
c. they have/had a proprietary interest in such dog whether solely or in partnership in the previous 12 months.
Effective from 1 January 2026.
2. * Regulations Part 5 – Conformation Show, Clause 9A.1.4
It was RESOLVED that Regulations Part 5 – Conformation Show, Clause 9.1A be amended to include a new clause 9A.1.4 as follows: 9A.1.4 The Best in Show Judge(s) of the A20CS MUST be from the FCI Asia, Africa & Oceania member country.
Effective from 1 July 2025.
3. * Regulations Part 6 – The Register & Registration, Clause 8.8.4
It was RESOLVED that Regulations Part 6 – The Register & Registration, Clause 8.8.4 be amended as follows: Current Regulation:
1.1.4 For all German Shepherd litters born from 1 January 2017:-
a. Both parents of every litter must be screened for Hip Dysplasia through an official Hip Dysplasia Control Scheme. Where the parents have been born after the 30th June 2015, they must record a score of no more than eight (8) on either hip, with no more than three (3) in any one area, or in the case of imported dogs, a grading that is deemed to be acceptable for breeding in their country of origin.
b. Both parents of every litter must be screened for Elbow Dysplasia through an official Elbow Dysplasia Control Scheme. Where the parents have been born after the 30th June 2015, they must record a grading of Normal, Near Normal or Grade One on both elbows, and must be free from the condition of UAP (Ununited Anconeal Process).

8.8.4 For all German Shepherd litters born from 1 January 2017:-
a. Both parents of every litter must be screened for hip dysplasia through the Dogs Australia Canine Hip & Elbow Dysplasia Scheme (CHEDS) and/ or the GSDCA Hip and Elbow Dysplasia Breed Improvement Schemes or in the case of an imported dog through a recognised hip dysplasia screening scheme if the dog has been screened before arrival in Australia.
b. Both parents of every litter must be screened for elbow dysplasia through the Dogs Australia Canine Hip & Elbow Dysplasia Scheme (CHEDS) and/ or the GSDCA Hip and Elbow Dysplasia Breed Improvement Schemes or in the case of an imported dog through a recognised elbow dysplasia screening scheme if the dog has been screened before arriving in Australia.

2.2 Notwithstanding the provisions in 2.1 the following Regulations are currently applied by individual National Canine Organisations. Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI)
In accordance with FCI Show Regulations 2 e, judges from FCI National Canine Organisations may under no circumstances agree to judge a breed at any show for which they are not approved by their own NCO (National Canine Organization) and for which they are not listed in the FCI Judges Directory. The same applies for judging at Best in Group and Best in Show level. When seeking approval to judge at an FCI International Show in Australia, a Non-Resident Judge may only apply to award the CACIB to breeds for which they are individually listed in the FCI Judges Directory, failing to comply with this requirement will result in the FCI invalidating the confirmation of the CACIBs incorrectly awarded. For non CACIB breeds listed in Appendix A to these Regulations, including the Australasian Bosdog, Murray River Retriever and Tenterfield Terrier, approval may be granted to award Challenges after the judge completes an ANKC Ltd Open Book Examination* on those breeds. It was RESOLVED that a separate Dogs Australia Conformation Judges Contract for Performance Events. Effective from 1 January 2026.

It was RESOLVED that the commencement date of the Overseas Judges register to be established on the Dogs Australia website of all overseas judges approved to judge in Australia be amended to 1 July 2026.

History
The Black and Tan Coonhound is a breed of hunting dog. Developed in the United States from crosses between the Bloodhound and the Black and Tan Virginia Foxhound, this scent hound runs its game entirely by scent and is used primarily for coon hunting.
Appearance
The coat is short, dense and glossy. The eyes are hazel to brown, the ears are extremely long, wide, and thin, are set low and far back on the dog’s head, and hang well down the neck. The black and tan markings are similar to the Dobermann and the Rottweiler.
The Black and Tan Coonhound’s bark is loud and baying; it has been described as a deep howl. The breed standard includes muscular legs that are long in proportion to body length. The tail is set slightly below the natural line of the back.
Temperament
The Black and Tan Coonhound is first and fundamentally a working dog, a trail and tree hound, capable of withstanding the rigors of winter, the heat of summer, and the difficult terrain over which he is called upon to work. Used principally for trailing and treeing raccoon, the Black and Tan Coonhound runs his game entirely by scent.
The Black and Tan Coonhound makes a suitable pet: it is mellow, amiable, calm, and unobtrusive indoors; outdoors, its strong hunting instinct takes over and it can be difficult to turn it from tracking after it starts trailing. As befitting a dog with its heritage, it is strong, independent, and stubborn.
This breed is gentle and tolerant with children, but it may be too independent to satisfy a playful child. It is reserved with strangers and in their presence may bay and howl.
The Black and Tan Coonhound can run for miles although it is usually content with a moderate jog or long walk, with an occasional excursion into the field. It can wander if it catches a scent, so a safe area is mandatory.
