The Executive Officer, Dogs SA P.O. Box 844, Prospect East 5082. Phone: 8349 4797
For the first time in the history of Dogs SA we have achieved greater than 10% of the Dogs Australia National membership. We now have two directors on the Dogs Australia board which gives us equal voting rights to Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria. The Dogs SA Council confirmed the second Director representing Dogs SA will be the Vice President Mr Peter Thompson.
Some may have noticed the benches around the rings were replaced. Council directed the Executive Officer to purchase new benches to be installed on concrete pads in a similar location to the previous benches and for those which had plaques on them, the plaques are removed and reinstalled on the concrete pads.
In March, I attended the Dog News Australia Top Dog awards in Sydney. Again, I was extremely pleased to see Dogs SA come away with most of the awards. For those that missed it Dogs SA won the following awards:
• Australia’s most popular Judge – Mr Aramis Joy Lim (2 years in a row),
• Australia’s most popular show – Dogs SA Winter International (5 years in a row),
• Australia’s most popular Royal Show – Adelaide Royal Show.
Just goes to show what a State can do when we all work together. Well done to all of those concerned – let’s go for the clean sweep next year.
At the meeting of Dogs SA Council conducted 26 February 2025 it was unanimously confirmed:
1. Dogs SA will not be requesting reimbursement from the affiliates for the Public Liability or Directors Insurance for 2025 which forms part of the annual fee structure. Estimated cost to the Association $39,000.
Rationale:
Dogs SA again received a very good return on investments and considered that it should make a return to the affiliates to help ease the current financial burdens they are feeling through cost-of-living pressures.
2. To provide Members with the courtesy of advance notice: Item 9, Notice of motion to amend the SACA Inc Constitution, proposed by Dogs SA, is removed from the 2025 AGM agenda.
Rationale:
Although Council considers the Constitution to be completed and would be acceptable to the majority of members, it does not consider the By-Laws (rules) which are integral to the adoption of the Constitution ready to be presented to the members. It is anticipated the Constitution and By-Laws will be presented to the members either later this year as a Special General Meeting or held over to the 2026 Annual General Meeting.

Best of Breed / Challenge Certificates – as from 1st July 2025
Due to certificates now being available from either Easydogs or Show Manager, it is no longer a requirement for Conformation Clubs to print certificates for exhibitors that do not require a hard copy.
Application for Conformation Titles can now be applied for with the point list from either of the online providers and there is no requirement for the hard copy certificate when lodged in this manner.
As from 1st July 2025, Conformation Certificates may only be available upon request at the event, on the day.
This enables exhibitors to continue applying for titles in the same manner they are familiar with if this is the preferred option.
If an exhibitor does not pick up their certificate on the day, the Club is not responsible to issue another one but can cooperate if they choose.

PROCEDURE FOR RESERVING OF SITES FOR COMMERCIAL MARQUEES
When it is intended to book and erect a commercial marquee an application must be made to the Dogs SA office no less than 10 working days prior to the event. The booking must be made on the application form (available on Dogs SA website or office) and the non-refundable prescribed fee of $50.00 must be paid at this time. The booking will not be accepted without a complete form and payment. Commercial marquees are to be erected 2 days prior to the event to avoid conflict with other exhibitors and allow sufficient working space for the erectors. If a commercial marquee is not erected 2 days prior, then the reservation is forfeited, and other members may set up within that site.
Only commercial marquees are to be erected on booked sites. No personal gazebos.
Please be vigilant with your dog details as provided on paper entries, Easydog entries or Show Manager (and any other online provider).
The owner of the dog & the dogs titles must match the pedigree, or the dog may face disqualification.

The judge will then reassess the selected dogs and choose the overall winner. If a tie persists, group winners will continue competing until the ultimate winner is determined.
Option 2:

FCI Asia, Africa & Oceania Champion Title (FCI A20 Ch.)
Many FCI countries around the world award ‘Regional Titles’, for example in the FCI Americas Section there are regional titles such as Pan American Champion and Latin America Champion. The regional Australian FCI title is the Asia, Africa & Oceania Champion, in the short form FCI A20 Champion (FCI A20 Ch.), which came into effect 17th June 2019.
Due to the structure of the ANKC and the way individual States Bodies manage and run their own affairs, dispensation is given to Australian exhibitors to qualify for FCI A20 Section titles, in that A20 CAC’s won in different countries be replaced with individual States counting as different countries.
Requirements to attain Asia, Africa & Oceania Champion Titles in Australia:
To obtain the title of Asia, Africa & Oceania Champion: A dog/ bitch who is already an Australian Champion or Champion of an FCI member country, must win EIGHT A20CS CAC’s dog/ bitch at any FCI

At least THREE of the twelve A20CS CAC must be won in different States of Australia.
Awarding of A20CS CAC’s
The A20CS CAC’s are awarded to the Best Dog & Best Bitch OR Dog CAC & Bitch CAC at a Championship Show. The Show does not have to be a CACIB/International Show and the awarding of the A20CS CAC’s follow the ANKC Rules with the regards to the awarding of the Best Dog & Best Bitch OR Dog CAC & Bitch CAC.

RETRIEVING & FIELD TRIAL “HALL OF FAME”
2025 Nominations
In the first twenty two years of elections, Dogs Australia has received nominations for 60 dogs and 47 people to be considered for induction into the Retrieving & Field Trial Hall of Fame. From the nominations received 38 outstanding dogs and 30 exceptional people have been inducted.
The criteria for the two categories for selection are the following:
1. Outstanding Gundogs (must be permanently retired from further competition and have not competed for the past 12 months, or be deceased)
(a) Their record as a winning dog i.e., CLUB – STAKE – DATE –JUDGE – PLACE and/or
(b) Their production record.
(c) The eligibility for a dog should be based on its entire competitive career and previous record as a producer, not merely for a particular win or for a heroic deed within the field and retrieving trial sphere.
(d) Subject to the receipt of a formal application, dogs that have been awarded the title of Grand Champion and have gained a total number of points equal to, or greater than, twice the total number required for that award, shall automatically be inducted into the Hall of Fame. Such applications must include full particulars and a brief resume of the dog’s career.
(e) Subject to the receipt of a formal application, dogs winning at least two National Championships in the same discipline shall automatically be inducted into the Hall of Fame. Such applications must include full particulars and a brief resume of the dog’s career.
2. Prominent Persons:
Their record of a broad combination of accomplishments as:
(a) Club official
(b) Judge
(c) Owner
(d) Handler
The distinction of nomination should be accorded to those who have made outstanding contributions to the field or retrieving game. Nominees should be givers to the sport and not takers.
Nominations are now being called for the current year. In addition to applications submitted in relation to Outstanding Gundogs 1 (d) and 1(e), a maximum of two other outstanding gundogs and two prominent persons may be elected each year.
Nomination:
1. Clubs or Members may nominate DOGS and PEOPLE considered worthy of awards, including full details of accomplishments within the above categories and with verification. In the case of dogs, nominations should include the full name, title, owner and date of birth.
[Please note it is a condition of nomination that the nominator/s provides accurate written material supporting the nomination. In the absence of such accurate supporting material, or should the supporting material later prove to be inaccurate in areas of significance, the Selection Panel for the Dogs Australia Retrieving & Field Trial Hall of Fame reserves the right to reconsider its decision and if appropriate, delete the name of the Prominent Person or Outstanding Dog from the list of inductees.]
2. Nominations shall close on the 31 May 2025 at respective Member Body offices for forwarding to Dogs Australia.
3 Please use the proforma nomination forms that are available from all Member Body offices and the Dogs Australia website at https://dogsaustralia.org.au/members/hall-of-fame/ retrieving-field-trial-hall-of-fame-2025-nominations/.

THREE COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT MILK REPLACERS
1.
2. “Should a milk replacer be part of my maternity toolkit?”
There are several reasons why milk-replacers may become necessary, either as a ‘top-up’ or as the sole source of nutrition. As you know, some first-time mothers may struggle with their maternal instincts. Alternatively, the bitch may be unwell or unable to produce enough milk, especially if she has a large litter. Toxic milk syndrome occurs when some puppies in a litter develop diarrhoea or colitis, despite the dam showing no clinical signs of mastitis. Studies suggest this may be linked to subclinical mastitis, which can be detected by examining the milk for increased neutrophils¹.
Even if the bitch appears to be managing well, it is crucial to closely monitor the puppies, as inadequate weight gain can often be the first indicator of a problem, suggesting that additional support is needed. We recommend weighing your puppies daily after birth to track their progress. Recent studies show that any puppy losing more than 4% of its birth weight within the first 48 hours has a significantly higher risk of mortality and may benefit from supplemental feeding¹-³.
Other risk factors for neonatal mortality may include:
• A low birth weight and low Apgar score ²,⁴. If you aren’t currently Apgar scoring your pups it is definitely worth looking up how to do this, as it will really help you to identify any potential weaker puppies so you can offer them immediate additional nutritional support.
• Litter heterogeneity (weight difference between biggest and smallest puppies in a litter) - If a significant weight variation is observed within the litter, it should be considered potentially at risk.
• Puppies from large litters. If the litter size is bigger than is typically expected for that breed, the puppies are more likely to be of low birth weight.² Using supplemental milk replacers from birth in this instance can provide nutritional
support for these puppies.
“All milk replacers are the same.”
A common misconception is that any milk will suffice for newborn puppies. However, canine milk is unique: it’s more energy-dense, is twice as rich in protein, fat, calcium, and phosphorus compared to other species, all of which contribute to healthy growth. Cow and goat milk, being higher in lactose, may be harder for puppies to digest. Human milk replacers should be avoided as they contain starch, which puppies can’t digest during their first few weeks. Homemade formulas are also risky due to the difficulty in replicating the nutritional balance of canine milk and ensuring sterility.
Osmolality, the osmotic pressure from dissolved particles, is crucial in milk replacers. If a milk replacer has high osmolality, it can lead to osmotic diarrhoea, a serious condition for newborn puppies who are 84% water⁵. Ensuring the milk replacer has the right osmolality is essential, and formulas designed specifically for puppies are made with this in mind.
While there are many milk replacers available, not all may meet the puppies’ nutritional needs. Some formulas contain beneficial components like DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), prebiotics, and maltodextrin, supporting cognitive development, digestive function, immune health, and overall growth. The bitch’s ability to produce DHA during lactation is limited¹, so supplementing newborn puppies with DHA has been shown to aid in the development of cognitive and ocular functions. Some milk formulas contain prebiotics, like fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS), which help promote digestive health and contribute to immune system development by supporting a healthy balance of microbiota.
When using a milk replacer, always remember to check the puppy’s body temperature first. Newborn puppies have a limited ability to regulate their body temperature, and if they are too cold, their digestive system won’t function properly. Ensure that the environment is warm, and if the puppy is cold, gently warm before feeding.
Reconstitution errors are the most common issue when preparing powder-based milk replacers. Follow the manufacturer’s water-to-powder ratio, as more is not always better. Mixing with other milk types, such as goat’s milk, may alter osmolality and cause digestive issues. Don’t forget to stimulate the puppy to urinate and defecate after feeding.

3. “Diarrhoea during weaning is only of viral or bacterial origin.”
Diarrhoea can slow growth rates and increase the risk of mortality⁶, as gastrointestinal issues are a leading cause of death in puppies under one year of age⁷. But diarrhoea during weaning isn’t always caused by viral or bacterial infections. At this stage, puppies are still developing their digestive systems: they lose the ability to digest milk but haven’t fully adapted to digesting starch. Environmental factors such as stress, high temperatures, or excessive humidity, as well as changes in diet, can contribute to diarrhoea during weaning. It’s also important to consider that certain parasites, like coccidia and Giardia, can also be implicated.
At weaning, which typically begins around 4 to 4.5 weeks of age, it’s important to ensure a smooth transition from milk to solid food. If kibble is introduced, it should be rehydrated in the first few weeks to make it easier for puppies to eat and digest. Using a canine milk replacer instead of water during the first week can help ease this process.
During weaning, puppies’ digestive systems are still immature and more fragile than in adults. Therefore we want the diet to be as digestible as possible. Digestive safety is essential for puppies because puppies are very sensitive to dehydration, a common consequence of diarrhoea.
Avoid free feeding during weaning, as this is a recognised risk factor for weaning diarrhoea. Research has shown that feeding puppies four meals per day during weaning improves stool quality by reducing digestive workload⁸.
For steady and healthy growth, BABYDOG MILK is formulated to closely match the bitch’s milk, with high energy and protein levels. Its unique formula dissolves instantly and completely, leaving no sediment and creating a smooth, homogenous mixture. Enriched with DHA, an omega-3 fatty acid, it aids in brain development and helps an immature immune system. It also has the right amount of lactose and prebiotics for optimal digestion.
OUR STARTER MOTHER & BABYDOG range offers tailored nutritional solutions to support puppies during weaning, from 1 to 2 months of age. Enriched with DHA for brain development and learning, it also contains a blend of prebiotics, and highly digestible proteins to promote a healthy intestinal balance. The formula supports a strong immune system with nutrients including Vitamins E and C. Additionally, the STARTER range meets the high energy needs of the bitch during late pregnancy and lactation.
