President’s Report Easter was again a very busy long weekend for our dog lovers with the Mt Gambier Easter Dogfest getting very good entries and the Blue Lake Obedience Dog Club holding trials in Mt Gambier over the same weekend. Congratulations to all of the winners and hope you had safe travels. It was a pity that Port Pirie could not hold it’s usual Easter weekend shows due to travel restrictions being still in place and finding it hard to contract judges. Here’s hoping everything will be back to normal in 2023.

Most members will already know that Anne Raymond has retired as the Breeder Services Manager for Advance Dog Food. Anne has over the years provided very good support through her position with Advance gaining quite a bit of sponsorship for conformation and other disciplines as well as the National Junior Handlers. Anne is retiring to what she thought would be a relaxing time however I am sure little Isabella will put paid to that idea very quickly. On behalf of Dogs SA members, I am sure we all wish Anne the best in her retirement and look forward to seeing her, Kate and Isabella at shows in the future. I would also like to welcome Kaye McGhie as the new Breeder Services Manager and hope that Dogs SA clubs will see good support from Advance into the future.

As we move into May/June it only gets busier for our clubs and committees with several major events on the horizon, such as the Winter International Shows with the FCI CACIB show on the Friday and the A2O show on the Sunday. There is also the State Agility Championships being conducted in Morphett Vale and a raft of other activities so there is plenty for everyone.

As the COVID restrictions are slowly being wound back there is still no place for complacency when out in the public. As recommended by the Chief Health Officer it is still beneficial for everyone to have their initial two vaccinations as well as the boosters and the flu vaccinations. Don’t just think about yourselves but also those around you who may not have the same level of immunity as yourself due to either age or illness.

As all of the club secretaries and presidents would be aware by now, Council has elected to hold a Secretaries and Presidents meeting in early June. It has been a number of years since one has been held so it is timely that another is programmed. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss matters which are affecting our affiliates and what can be done to assist them in maintaining their viability as without them Dogs SA has no future. If you have a subject you wish discussed, please inform the office prior to the meeting so an informed response can be provided by Council and not just have it referred to future.

Remember all to stay safe and look after our four legged friends as it does not matter what the discipline or where your dog finishes, you are still taking the best dog home.

Rule change effective 1st July 2022 PART IX JUDGES 12/(c) A Judge may enter and act as a Handler for a dog/s registered in his name/s at an Exhibition for Tracking, Retrieving, Field, Dances with Dogs, Lure Coursing, Trick Test or Scent Work, at which they are appointed to judge.

12.(i) For Scent Work a Judge may enter a dog registered in their name or handle a dog in one or more elements provided that they are not judging that element at that trial.

Albert was a founding member of the Bull Terrier Club of South Australia Inc, he was our club patron, and a life member and remained an active member until his ill health prevented him attending club functions.

He was patron of the Terrier club, and life member of the Marion Kennel Club.

He was also a well loved member of the Irish Wolfhound Club. Albert loved and adored his wife Gale, his children and his grandchildren and of course his Bull Terriers.

He was a very well respected Terrier man (in the Terrier world this is praise indeed).

He was loved and respected around the world.

DOG / PUPPY / NEUTER OF THE YEAR COMPETITION RULES 2022 The Dogs SA Show Dog / Puppy / Neuter of the Year Competition will be conducted on a date to be approved by Council each year.

• Qualifying period shall commence on the first Monday after the Adelaide Royal Show and will • •

conclude on the final day of the following Adelaide Royal Show Qualifying wins for Show Dog, Puppy and Neuter of the Year will be all Championship shows sanctioned by Dogs SA and held in South Australia All owners of dogs must be financial members of their controlling body with at least one being a financial member of Dogs SA at the time of the qualifying win/s and reside in South Australia

To qualify for this event: Your Show Dog must have been awarded one of the following:• All Breeds Best in Show • All Breeds RU Best in Show, or Deemed to be one of the top 3 dogs in your group, excluding dogs already qualified under the first 2 dot points. This will be calculated on a point score of 2 points for Best in Group or Best in Show Specialty and 1 point for RU Best in Group or Specialty. The points to be calculated at the end of the qualifying period with the top 3 dogs deemed the qualifiers (excluding BIS and RUBIS winners) Your Puppy must have been awarded: • All Breeds Baby, Minor or Puppy in Show • Puppy Qualifiers Must be over 6 months of age at the completion of the qualifying period for the current year, i.e. the final day of the Adelaide Royal Show Your Neuter Dog must have been awarded: • All Breeds Best Neuter in Show • All Breeds RU Best Neuter in Show Judges: All Judges must not have judged in South Australia for a minimum of 12 months prior to the event Judging Format: Order of Judging for the event will commence with Neuter of the Year, then Puppy of the Year, followed by Show Dog of the Year • The first round for competitors in each category shall be by random ballot • Where an exhibitor has 2 dogs in the same category, these dogs cannot draw each other in the first round • Judging is a knockout competition with the 3 judges assessing each dog and independently selecting the winner. The winner will then advance to the next round until the eventual winner is declared

SUMMARY OF THE DOGS AUSTRALIA SPECIAL BOARD MEETING HELD VIA ZOOM VIDEO CONFERENCING ON 12 FEBRUARY 2022 At the February 2022 ANKC Ltd Special Board meeting, Directors resolved/considered the following: 1. * ANKC Ltd Regulations Part 5 – Conformation Shows It was RESOLVED that Clauses 10.6.2 and 10.6.3 of ANKC Regulations Part 5 - Conformation Shows be amended to read: 10.6.2 Points shall be allotted for exhibits six (6) months of age and over exhibited in a Neuter Class as follows: (Amended 02/22, 5.1 Effective 01/07/22) a. Neuter Certificate winner – Dogs and Bitches Five (5) points plus one (1) point for each Neutered dog of the breed over the age of six months exhibited at the fixture. b. Best of Neuter Certificate winner Five (5) points plus one (1) point for each neuter dog and bitch of the breed over the age of six months exhibited at the fixture. c. Best Neuter in Group winner Each winner of the recognized seven (7) groups or ten (10) at CACIB shows – five (5) points plus one (1) point for each Neuter dog and bitch over the age of six months and exhibited in the Group at the fixture. d. Runner up to Best Neuter in Group Each Runner Up in the recognized seven (7) groups or ten (10) at CACIB shows – ten (10) points less than the Best Neuter in Group Winner or breed points whichever is higher, with the minimum being six points. e. Best Neuter in Show winner Five (5) points plus one (1) point for each Neuter dog and bitch exhibited in the Show or breed points whichever is higher, with the minimum being six points. f. Runner up to Best Neuter in Show Ten (10) points less than the Best Neuter in Show Winner or breed points whichever is higher, with the minimum being six points.

10.6.3 The points awarded under (a), (b), (c), (d), (e) and (f) above shall not accumulate and shall, in no case, exceed twenty-five (25) points at any one Show.

Note: This amendment to the regulations will be effective 1 July 2022.

2. * ANKC Ltd Regulations Part 6 – The Register & Registration It was RESOLVED that Regulations Part 6 – The Register & Registration be amended with the inclusion of new Clause 8.16 to read: May 2022

8.16 Afghan Hound (Added 02/22 – 6.1) The Minimum Breeding Age for Afghan bitches is 24 months at the time of mating (unless a veterinary certificate is produced stating that for health reasons the bitch should be mated before 24 months).

The Minimum Breeding Age for Afghan Hound bitches, breeders of litters whelped on or after 1st June 2022, will be required to comply with the requirements as a prerequisite to registration of any litter on the ANKC Ltd Main Register. Litters which do not meet the above requirements will only be able to be placed on the Limited Register and will be flagged not to be upgraded. and the existing Clauses 8.16, 8.17 and 8.18 will be renumbered.

Note: This amendment to the regulations will be effective 1 July 2022.

3. * ANKC Ltd Regulations Part 13 – Regulations for the Conduct of National Breed Councils It was RESOLVED that Regulations Part 13 – Regulations for the Conduct of National Breed Councils clauses 2.3.1 be amended to read: 2.3.1 The Membership of a National Breed Council must be comprised of at least two (2) Specialised Breed Clubs, each affiliated with a separate Member Body of the ANKC Ltd. And the removal of Clause 2.3.2.

Note: This amendment to the regulations will be effective 1 July 2022.

4. Tenterfield Terrier – Extension to the Breed under Development It was RESOLVED that the Tenterfield Terrier Breed under Development be extended for five years from 1 January 2022.

5. Recognition of the Sport of Canine Disc It was RESOLVED that the agreement between Dogs Australia and Canine Disc Australia Ltd be endorsed in principle and for it to be referred to the National Legislative Committee for any necessary amendments in liaison with the Canine Disc Australia Ltd. 6. Breeders Terms Contracts It was RESOLVED that all Member Bodies review the transfer of dogs in their State and Territory in the context of breeders terms contracts and other guardianship arrangements and provide feedback to the October 2022 Board meeting; and for Dogs Australia to obtain legal advice from a legal specialist in the context of sale of goods/ consumer protection legislation for distribution to Member Bodies. * New or Amended regulations, policy statements, procedures, publications and listings will be made available from the ANKC Ltd website.

AGILITY NEWS Points system for State Championships All classes have 3 rounds.

The best two results per class will be used to calculate the dogs’ points score for that class.

One result must be a qualifying round to be eligible.

Dog must be entered in two rounds to be eligible.

Agility & Jumping and Strategic Pairs Points will be determined by the place attained and any faults. A disqualification round or withdrawing/scratching counts as 50 points.

Dog with lowest State Champion Points, that meets eligibility criteria, will be named the State Champion. e.g If a dog competed in Novice Agility 500 and received the following results Round 1: First Place no faults = 1 point Round 2: Third Place with 10 faults = 13 points Round 3: Disqualification = 50 points State Champion Points = 14 points

Snooker & Gamblers Points will be determined by points accumulated plus bonus and deduction points as follows: Bonus Points for placings (dog must have a qualifying round to achieve bonus points): 1st Place = 10 point 2nd Place = 9 points 3rd Place = 8 points 4th Place = 7 points 5th Place = 6 points 6th Place = 5 points 7th Place = 4 points 8th Place = 3 points 9th Place = 2 points 10th Place = 1 point

Deduction Points A non-qualifying round counts as minus 10 points A disqualification round or withdrawing/scratching counts as minus 50 points Dog with highest State Champion Points, that meets eligibility criteria, will be named the State Champion.

First SA Scentwork Trial deemed a great success The Scent Work Advisory Committee conducted South Australia’s first scent work trial on Saturday, 2 April 2022.

For a new sport, we attracted a very respectable entry.

There were 27 dogs entered in the Novice Vehicle class, judged by Sharon Gahan, 29 entries in the Novice Interior class, judged by Narelle Medlicott, and 27 entries in the Novice Exterior class, judged by Kate Lloyd.

There were 16 passes in Novice Vehicles, and the class was won by Helen Edwards and Ch Lidlriva Arya Stark RN TK.S, with a search time of 15.34 seconds.

Novice Interior had 20 passes, and the class was won

by Pat Fickling and Cassie CCD RN with an extremely impressive search time of 3.99 seconds. This was also the quickest search of the day.

The final search for the day was Novice Exterior, where there were a whopping 24 passes, and the class was won by Helen Edwards and Ch Lidlriva Arya Stark RN TK.S, with a search time of 5.68 seconds.

A big thank you to all who entered and made the day a resounding success. To the judges – your courses were awesome and a lot of fun. An especially big thanks to all the stewards and helpers. And last, but by no means least, to Noarlunga City Obedience Dog Club for the use of their grounds.

The camaraderie and support of all in attendance was astounding. We look forward to watching this sport prosper in SA. Bron Gascoigne Secretary, Scent Work Advisory Committee

Stories around the a*-Ɯre 4ith All Breeds Dog Judge, John e4ington Chinese restaurant Sydney In 1997 we had an Irish wolfhound called Kaos (Ch Eaglestone Falcon).

He was an import from New Zealand and was out of a bitch I had given best in show at their specialty. The big dog had done a lot of winning in South Australia including a couple of best in shows all breeds, so when I was offered a ride to Sydney the weekend of the N S W Specialty by a good friend of mine, I was happy to accept the offer.

We left Adelaide at 3.00 am on Friday the 4th October and drove straight through to Sydney, a trip of some eighteen hours in my friend’s panel van with her whippets in the trailer and big Kaos in the back of the van (I will not put Wolfhounds in a trailer). We arrived safe and sound at Denise’s friend’s beautiful home at 9 pm where we would be staying for a couple of nights. I took Kaos for a long walk we even found a Giraffe house the previous owners had owned a pet giraffe called legs, then there was just enough time for a couple of beers and hit the sack.

The Irish Wolfhound Specialty was at Castle Hills show grounds along with a number of other shows including the Hound club, Whippet and Greyhound club and the Borzoi Specialty. Not a bad day for us at the show. When my friend Denise had finished showing her whippets, she got back just in time to take Kaos round the ring in open dog. Kaos took out reserve dog and best interstate exhibit, although he did play up a bit strutting round the ring with his tail up which seemed to annoy the judge.

We won a nice trophy so we had a good weekend.

After the show we went back to the home of our host. After walking the dogs and checking out the coach house on the property we were invited to go out for dinner with the lady of the house to a Chinese restaurant that she told me was the best Chinese in Sydney. I love Chinese food so that was a real treat. The restaurant was very upmarket, lovely décor and the food and service was superb.

There was a small stage at one end of the restaurant and after a half an hour or so and man walked out and started singing Frank Sinatra songs (I am not a Sinatra fan). The waiter who was very attentive came over and asked if everything was okay. I said the food and service was excellent, but I had come to the restaurant to have a quiet meal and to talk to my friends and did not appreciate having to put up with some bloke singing Frank Sinatra songs.

A short while later the singing stopped, and the waiter came over a said on behalf of the management we like to apologise and the owner said he would not be singing any more tonight. WHOOPS!

Meet the Juniors MILA PIKE

Hi everyone, my name is Mila Pike and I turned 8 Years old in April.

I live on a farm at Forreston in the Adelaide Hills, with my Mum, Dad and little brother Hunter, and our little miniature schnauzer Oscar. We have chooks, sheep, horses and Alpacas and I love that I get to spend lots of time playing outdoors.

My favourite things to do are riding my pony Sparkles, playing with my brother, riding my new bike, playing with the dogs, having friends come over and just hanging with my family.

I always love going to the dog shows with grandma and I started in Tiny Tot handlers when I was four years old where I got lots of help from grandma, my cousin Dylan, Alana and Abbey. I was very excited when I got to go into the Junior Handler classes on my own where I get to show different dogs and make new friends and have fun with the other juniors.

I really love going to Dog Shows with my grandma as I get to see my friend Lilly and I just love spending time with the dogs. I like lots of different breeds of dogs, but I especially like Huskies.

I really like helping grandma bath and groom the dogs and I especially liked going away to a dog show with Grandma and Pop in their caravan. I also had the best time when I went into the State final last year with all the other juniors.

I want to say thank you to everyone who let me show their dog in handlers and I can’t wait to go to another dog show and learn lots more about showing dogs as I really want to get better and have lots more fun with the dogs.

C. CODE OF CONDUCT FOR EXHIBITORS Dogs SA Exhibitors Code of Conduct (01/20) 1. By entering an Exhibition, all exhibitors acknowledge that they will do their utmost to comply with this Code of Conduct.

2. Exhibitors shall at all times and in all communications, including electronic media; (a) Be familiar with and commit to abide by ANKC Ltd and Member Body rules and regulations, and the rules covering the Exhibition both in word and in spirit. (b) Consider the health and welfare of their dog(s) to be of prime importance. (c) Consider the health and welfare of other peoples' dogs as if they were their own and not commit or allow their dog(s) to commit any act that may put other people or their dogs at risk. (d) Commit to fair play, sportsmanship, honesty and integrity within a competitive spirit and display good grace whether successful or otherwise. (e) Commit to being civil and courteous at all times to other exhibitors, Judges, the Exhibition management, stewards and other officials. (f) Commit to having control over their dogs at all times. (g) Be respectful of decisions taken by judges and the Exhibition Manager and refrain from open displays of dissent. (h) Respect constructive criticism of the performance or behaviour of themselves or their dogs. (i) Be respectful and constructive should they feel the need to comment on aspects of the running of an Exhibition, decisions made by Judges, or the performance or behaviour of another exhibitor or their dog. (j) Be respectful and constructive should they feel the need to comment on a dog entered in the Exhibition by another exhibitor. (k) Do nothing to adversely affect the impartiality of the Exhibition management or judges at the Exhibition. (l) Take responsibility for the actions and behaviour of their dog(s), family members or guests whom they invite into the precincts of the Exhibition. (m) Be welcoming and encouraging towards newcomers to the sport and assist them in understanding both the letter of and the spirit of the rules and the code of conduct for exhibitors. (n) Ensure that they have trained their dog(s) to a standard that will give them every chance to compete safely and successfully.

3. The use of threatening, abusive or aggressive language or behaviour towards any other person attending an Exhibition, including but not limited to, judges, exhibition officials, other exhibitors or visitors will not be tolerated under any circumstances.

Breaches of the Code of Conduct 4. Any competitor who witnesses a breach of this Code of Conduct is encouraged to report the matter to the SACA Representative at the earliest possible time.

CODE OF ETHICS FOR MEMBERS Each Member shall comply with the following Code of Ethics and any Member who fails to do so shall be guilty of an offence against these Rules.

As a Member of the South Australian Canine Association: 1.

I shall ensure that at all times all dogs under my control are properly and effectively contained by fencing or enclosure, and are properly housed, fed, watered, exercised and given proper Veterinary attention if and when required.

2.

I shall not allow any dogs under my care to roam at large, and, when away from home, ensure they are kept fully leashed and under effective control, or otherwise under effective control at all times. (01/16) 3.

I shall breed only for the purpose of improving the quality of the breed in line with the breed standard and strive to eliminate hereditary diseases in the breed/s that I produce.

4.

I shall strive to have all my breeding stock tested, where tests are available, for hereditary diseases.

5.

The health and welfare of a bitch being bred from is of paramount importance and I will adhere to the following minimum standards.

(01/20) (a) Not allow any bitch owned by me and/or under my control to be mated before she is twelve months of age. (01/20) (b) Breeding - A member shall not breed with a bitch causing it to whelp more than twice in any eighteen (18) period without the prior approval of the SACA. (01/20) (c) Not permit a bitch to have more than five litters in her lifetime unless at the time of mating there was a current veterinary certificate stating that the bitch is in good health. The veterinary certificate must be presented at the time of registering the litter resulting from this mating. (11/21) (d) Not conduct or permit mother/son, father/daughter or brother/ sister matings. Puppies from such matings will not be registered unless approval from the SACA was provided prior to the mating.

SACA will only provide approval where scientifically proven welfare or veterinary reasons exist. (01/20) (e) Not breed a bitch over eight years of age unless at the time of a mating there was a current veterinary certificate stating that the bitch is in good health. The veterinary certificate must be presented at the time of registering the litter resulting from this mating. A current veterinarian certificate is defined as a certificate dated within the three months prior to the mating. (01/20) (f) A current veterinary certificate is defined as a certificate dated within three months prior to the mating. ( (11/21) 6.

I shall not knowingly permit any of my pure bred dogs to be mated to a dog of a different breed, to a cross bred dog, or to an unregistered dog of the same breed, or to a dog of the same breed which is entered on the Limited Register, unless specific permission is given by the SACA. 7.

I shall not sell or otherwise transfer from my care any puppy under eight weeks of age, thus allowing for vaccination to be given at six weeks of age and thereby allowing for the ten to fourteen days for the vaccine to take effect. Upon the disposal of the dog I shall provide the owner with a current vaccination certificate of that dog issued by a Veterinary Surgeon. Accepted Veterinarian vaccination certificates are C3 12/36 months, C4, C5 or an annual Titre Test accompanied by a Veterinarian letter. (01/19) 8.

I shall not knowingly sell or otherwise transfer from my care any dog that is not in good health.

9.

I shall ensure that any puppy that is to be exported shall be a minimum of eleven weeks of age and micro-chipped. (01/12) 10. I shall ensure that all persons acquiring dogs from me clearly understand their responsibility for the care and welfare of the animal as defined in Clause 1 and 2 above. I shall not knowingly misrepresent the characteristics of the breed, nor falsely advertise, or mislead any person regarding the performance of any dog. I shall provide to all purchasers of dogs or those placed by me, written details of all dietary and vaccination requirements and responsible dog ownership and/or an appropriate publication relating to such requirements.

11. I shall not sell any dog to commercial dog wholesalers, retail pet dealers, or directly or indirectly to allow a dog to be given as a prize or donation in a contest of any kind or to be auctioned.
