President’s Report On behalf of Dogs SA Council, Staff and Members I would like to welcome aboard Deb Lee who has joined us as the new Executive Officer. Deb has a wealth of experience in the position of Executive Officer for Not-for-Profit organizations and I am sure she will fit in very well. Yes she has two Portuguese Water Dogs. Please when you see her say hello and make her feel welcome. A short copy of her Bio and picture has been loaded to the Dogs SA website and other media and in this Journal. The Dogs SA Council elections have concluded with an average number of members taking the time to vote. Hopefully by the next election members will have the option of electronic voting as well. I would also like to thank the candidates who came forward and nominated for positions, not all could be elected but it was a strong turnout. I would like to welcome three new Councillors taking office at the AGM on 02 March 2022, those being Connie Redhead and Nick Gouzos for 3 year terms and John Delucia for a 2 year term. As we have three new Councillors that means we have also lost three existing Councillors being Joy Lim, Tracie Edwards and Roberta Crouch. On behalf of Council and the members thank you for your time on Council and trust that you will still remain contributors to Dogs SA and the Dog world in general. European Wasps are again an issue at David Roche Park and although Council is doing its best to reduce the numbers to make it safe and enjoyable for people and dogs, they are virtually impossible to eradicate. Remember do not leave dog bait, food or drinks uncovered as these attract them in large numbers. If you see them on the grounds notify the SACA Rep so it can be included in their report. Over the next few weeks you will see a number of short videos and messages being circulated by Dogs Australia on social media and where possible other media in relation to the banning of certain breeds. When you see them disseminate them as widely as we can. This is an issue that will not only affect the current breeds under attack but into the future of the pedigree dog world as a whole. We need to keep the campaign positive about the benefits of ethical breeding and owning a pedigree dog. We must also be mindful that not every one wants a pedigree dog so don’t rubbish them but educate them. I you have any negative comments on the campaign please don’t voice them all over social media as many keyboard warriors do, contact me either by email or messenger so it can be discussed. Remember it takes 1,000 positive comments to rectify the damage 1 negative comment can make. And one final message, I hope to see you all at the 70th Annual General Meeting of the Association being conducted on 02 March 2022 at 8PM at David Roche Park. “Maddi”

At the tender age of only 14 months Maddi continues to impress. Winning Best in Show and backing it up with Runner Up Best in show at the recent ADSS shows in January, Maddi has smashed goals from the moment she stepped in the ring. She gained her Australian Champion title in only three weeks at just six months of age. Now Maddi is over halfway to her Grand Champion title and Supreme Champion title having won multiple Best in Group, Runner Up Best in Group, also winning multiple Class in Show and Class in Groups as well. We would like to thank all the judges along the way that have awarded Maddi so highly and recognised her beautiful qualities and for their lovely comments. A special thank-you to Klaudia Senator for your amazing artwork and to Josie Haseldine, Ingrid Matschke and Madeleine Matschke for always taking the time to capture beautiful photos of Maddi.

I am a qualified Social Worker by background, having spent over 30 years working in the community, predominantly in the area of health and community services. My journey into management was accidental, fulfilling a need. To my great surprise I loved it! I moved, over time, from managing a small team and mental health program delivery through to Deputy CEO and then CEO of the same organisation and then the CEO of the Adelaide Primary Health Network.

I have solid experience in tender and grant writing, responsible for writing the winning tenders for both the Medicare Local and then the Adelaide Primary Health Network, alongside a significant number of small grants. I also have a Masters in Business Administration which has inspired my passion for innovation, great strategy and ensuring a positive culture in organisations. I have a passion for community engagement and providing innovative solutions - working alongside team members, rolling up my sleeves. My great passion is dogs! I have had the pleasure of many over my lifetime and am currently blessed with two Portuguese Water Dogs, Sebastian who is 3 and Izzy who is 11 weeks old. Together, Sebastian and I have attained Level 5 Obedience and he immensely enjoys both Rally and Scent Work (as do I!). I am very much looking forward to including Izzy in our team work! I am super excited about leading Dogs SA as their new EO and feel that I have huge amounts to learn from both the staff, the Council and the members! I am sure that my very transferable levels of expertise will help to enhance the organisation and I very much look forward to meeting you, learning and working alongside you, understanding what it is you want from Dogs SA. RESULTS OF DISCIPLINARY HEARINGS CODE OF ETHICS FOR MEMBERS Each Member shall comply with the following Code of Ethics and any Member who fails to do so shall be guilty of an offence against these Rules. As a Member of the South Australian Canine Association: 1. I shall ensure that at all times all dogs under my control are properly and effectively contained by fencing or enclosure, and are properly housed, fed, watered, exercised and given proper Veterinary attention if and when required. 2. I shall not allow any dogs under my care to roam at large, and, when away from home, ensure they are kept fully leashed and under effective control, or otherwise under effective control at all times. (01/16) 3. I shall breed only for the purpose of improving the quality of the breed in line with the breed standard and strive to eliminate hereditary diseases in the breed/s that I produce. 4. I shall strive to have all my breeding stock tested, where tests are available, for hereditary diseases. 5. The health and welfare of a bitch being bred from is of paramount importance and I will adhere to the following minimum standards. (01/20) (a) Not allow any bitch owned by me and/or under my control to be mated before she is twelve months of age. (01/20) (b) Breeding - A member shall not breed with a bitch causing it to whelp more than twice in any eighteen (18) period without the prior approval of the SACA. (01/20) (c) Not permit a bitch to have more than five litters in her lifetime unless at the time of mating there was a current veterinary certificate stating that the bitch is in good health. The veterinary certificate must be presented at the time of registering the litter resulting from this mating. (11/21) (d) Not conduct or permit mother/son, father/daughter or brother/ sister matings. Puppies from such matings will not be registered unless approval from the SACA was provided prior to the mating. SACA will only provide approval where scientifically proven welfare or veterinary reasons exist. (01/20) (e) Not breed a bitch over eight years of age unless at the time of a mating there was a current veterinary certificate stating that the bitch is in good health. The veterinary certificate must be presented at the time of registering the litter resulting from this mating. A current veterinarian certificate is defined as a certificate dated within the three months prior to the mating. (01/20) (f) A current veterinary certificate is defined as a certificate dated within three months prior to the mating. ( (11/21) 6. I shall not knowingly permit any of my pure bred dogs to be mated to a dog of a different breed, to a cross bred dog, or to an unregistered dog of the same breed, or to a dog of the same breed which is entered on the Limited Register, unless specific permission is given by the SACA. 7. I shall not sell or otherwise transfer from my care any puppy under eight weeks of age, thus allowing for vaccination to be given at six weeks of age and thereby allowing for the ten to fourteen days for the vaccine to take effect. Upon the disposal of the dog I shall provide the owner with a current vaccination certificate of that dog issued by a Veterinary Surgeon. Accepted Veterinarian vaccination certificates are C3 12/36 months, C4, C5 or an annual Titre Test accompanied by a Veterinarian letter. (01/19) 8. I shall not knowingly sell or otherwise transfer from my care any dog that is not in good health. 9. I shall ensure that any puppy that is to be exported shall be a minimum of eleven weeks of age and micro-chipped. (01/12) 10. I shall ensure that all persons acquiring dogs from me clearly understand their responsibility for the care and welfare of the animal as defined in Clause 1 and 2 above. I shall not knowingly misrepresent the characteristics of the breed, nor falsely advertise, or mislead any person regarding the performance of any dog. I shall provide to all purchasers of dogs or those placed by me, written details of all dietary and vaccination requirements and responsible dog ownership and/or an appropriate publication relating to such requirements. 11. I shall not sell any dog to commercial dog wholesalers, retail pet dealers, or directly or indirectly to allow a dog to be given as a prize or donation in a contest of any kind or to be auctioned. RETRIEVING AND FIELD TRIAL RULES REVIEW 2022 As part of their routine rules review, this year the ANKC will be reviewing the Rules for the Conduct of Retrieving Ability Tests for Gundogs and the Retrieving Ability Test for Gundogs Judges Training Scheme. Other disciplines are also being reviewed but SA is ineligible to participate in those discussions. States have been asked to suggest any changes they feel would be appropriate. The SA RAFT Advisory wishes to give all retrieving enthusiasts the opportunity to contribute their ideas, especially those who have competed in or are currently competing in RATG’s. If you have suggestions for changes to either of these documents we would welcome your input. Submissions must be made in writing or via email to the RAFT Secretary – Jessie Hughes PO Box 168 PROSPECT SA 5082 or Jessie.h@adam.com.au Separate submissions should be made for the rules and the regulation and should include the following detail: 1. the current rule number and rule detail; 2. the proposed amendment; 3. a full rationale for the proposed amendment; 4. list any current rules which could be affected as consequential change/s resulting from a proposed new rule or an amendment to a current rule. Only submissions set out in his manner will be accepted. Email submissions to be in Word format please. Closing date for submissions is 31st March 2022. After submissions have been received a meeting will be held on Tuesday 5th April commencing at 7 pm at Dogs SA to consider what proposals SA RAFT will put forward to ANKC. Members interested in attending the meeting but not wishing to send in a rule change should contact Jessie by the close of submissions date so that she can provide more information prior to the meeting. AGILITY NEWS The Dogs SA Council has requested that any issues that members feel need Council attention are managed through Advisory Committees. To help facilitate this the Agility Advisory Committee have established a process that we feel will give members the ability to raise any concerns or opportunities for improvement and know how they will be reviewed and actioned. Dogs SA Rules Reviews - We must all abide by the rules as written and it is every members responsibility to be familiar with the rules as they impact us and the discipline/s we are involved in. If any member does not feel a rule is constructed well, is not fair or could be improved in a way that does not open up the Association or individuals to possible legal action, then you can write a proposal to the AAC in the following format: Current Rule: New Rule: Rationale: The AAC will then survey the members to get a feel for support. If it receives majority support with this group, we can then survey clubs/judges for their perspective and consideration. If we still have majority support and no major road blocks that were not considered in the original proposal, we can then put the proposal to Council with all of this supporting evidence. The Agility Advisory Committee will ensure the final decision made by Council is communicated with the members. Members must understand that Dogs SA rules cannot override or undermine ANKC rules and ANKC rules have their own review process. Opportunities for Improvement – The Agility Advisory Committee welcome any member suggestions that could help improve our discipline. Please clearly outline your proposal including: What are you looking to accomplish and how Background information to explain the current situation Does it have any cost attached? If so how much. Who would need to be involved to implement the solution proposed Agility Community consultation will be undertaken as required and if determined the proposal is supported then the AAC will determine whether this is a Council issue or and issue that the Agility Community can manage via the Agility Advisory Committee. Concerns or Complaints – we understand that sometimes issues arise that members feel are not appropriate. There are processes in place if members feel the issue needs to be raised officially and reviewed by the Disciplinary Committee, the Advisory Committees are not involved nor consulted in these matters. However, if you wish to raise a concern, that you believe is not required to be reported to the Disciplinary Committee, but does warrant some discussion/communication/ clarification please clearly outline your concern and include as much detail as possible and the Agility Advisory Committee will determine the best actions to attempt to resolve these issues. Stories around the campfire with All Breeds Dog Judge, John Lewington Kuala Lumpar A number of years ago I was invited to judge two shows in Borneo, to be honest I had no idea that they held dog shows in that part of Asia. I thought about it for a while and then decided I would not get another opportunity to visit that part of the world, so I signed the contract and hoped for the best. I flew Adelaide to Kuala Lumpar and was met by a very charming member of the Malaysian Kennel Club (I believe she was the President). She had parked her black Mercedes car in the no parking area outside the Airport but there was no problem as three or four armed police were waiting at the car and saluted me when I got close to them. One of them put my suitcase and bag in the boot and said good evening Sir, I asked Natasha what that was all about and she told me when she had pulled up in the car to pick me up, they had told her you cannot park there. She informed them I am picking up a Judge from Australia he cannot walk to the car park that would be very rude. It’s a good job they didn’t find out I was just a dog judge (not the real thing) otherwise we may both have been in trouble. The drive to the hotel in the centre of the city took an hour in heavy traffic so it was 10 pm by the time I checked in. Natasha then asked me if I would like to go for a drink, so we set off for a night club in the city. I ordered a beer she settled for Vodka the beer was terrible so I stuck to the Whisky. The club was very lively lots of singing and dancing going on but it was hard to tell the boys from the girls. We left the club around 3 am and my new friend paid the drink bill over $200. From there we went to a restaurant for a meal this time my treat. I was dropped back at the hotel by taxi at 5 am and told that members of the Malaysian Kennel club would collect me in the morning at 10 am for our flight to Kuching but that’s another story. That most certainly was a welcome with a difference not that I am complaining but I don’t think that will ever happen again.

Meet the Juniors PATRICK CHAPMAN-STEVENS

Although these are old photos, I had to include my boy and girl. I’m 15 and have been showing dogs since I was 7. My family have been involved in dogs since before I was born and have been showing for most of my life. Our first show dog was my boy Finn, Aust.Ch & Aust Neut.CH Snowbrook Royal Jester, who my parents showed until I was old enough to take over. Soon after we got him, we got our first Newfoundland, I said to my mum I was only going in the ring if I could take her even if she was twice my size. I love being in the ring and working with dogs. Over the years of handling as a junior, I have been lucky enough to be given the opportunity to exhibit and campaign several different breeds, from Samoyeds and Newfoundlands to Bergamascos, German Spitz and a range of gun dogs including one I was lucky enough to co-own, Aust.CH & Aust Neut CH Sunfire Hannah Montana (Cordelia). I have competed at the Royal Show in Adelaide and have competed in Juniors in other states as well. One of my favourite memories is taking out my age class in the Estrella Cup at the Winter International and taking runner up best Junior Handler overall. I look forward to continuing my development as a handler and learning about all the different breeds of dog out there.
