President’s Report
President’s Report
As we continue on with 2020, the year that will be remembered for all the wrong reasons, Dogs SA is slowly getting back to some form of normality. In August we have seen many events occurring in different disciplines and training resuming for many of our obedience clubs and sporting disciplines. The clubs and members have had to accept change if we want to continue. The events have lost some of the social atmosphere due to social distancing and we now have COVID Marshals at our events. I thank those people who have willingly volunteered to assist our clubs by acting as Marshals. Contrary to several posts on Face Book these people are not power trippers but are very much appreciated volunteers so we can continue to hold events. As this is a SA Legislative requirement, the Marshals are considered an official of the event and their directions must be adhered to. Dogs SA is continuing with the recruitment of a new Executive Officer to replace Wolfgang. Applications have closed and an external recruitment agency is currently shortlisting the applicants. It is hoped that a preferred candidate will be endorsed by the end of September. Over recent months there has been problems contacting the office by telephone. This has been due to a Telstra issue with the lines and the office has been in constant contact with Telstra and the Ombudsman to have the matter resolved. It does look as though this has now been remedied by transferring from the traditional fixed line communication to VoIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol). In simple terms the telephones work over the internet. This is also a more cost-effective means of using the telephone as there are no call charges. Several months ago, Council endorsed the installation of a 15Kw solar system for Dogs SA. This has been installed and the first accounts have come in with a significant saving in electricity costs. It is estimated the solar system will pay for itself within 3 – 4 years. The Festival of Dogs Day which is being held on 22 November 2020 is gaining good momentum with a lot of interest from breed clubs and individual breeders. It will be a very interesting and action-packed day so spread the word to all of your friends as it is a free day out for the family. In closing I would again like to express our thoughts and concerns to friends in other states who are still being significantly affected by the COVID 19 crisis. NOMINATIONS FOR COUNCIL With nominations being called for in September/October 2020 for the election in February 2021 for half of the officers of the SACA Council, required to serve for a three year term, it is relevant to provide the following information for interested members. SACA is a member of the Australian National Kennel Council Ltd (ANKC) and is the controlling canine body for the State. It is responsible for matters relating to breeding standards, the registration and exhibition of pure-bred dogs as well as the promotion and encouragement of recreational, sporting, training, and trialling activities of SACA registered dogs. SACA is a non-profit organisation. It relies heavily on the support and voluntary involvement of many people to service its members and affiliated club organisations. SACA is governed by an elected Council comprising a President, Vice-President and nine Councillors. The Council determines policies and procedures within the limits imposed by the SACA Constitution and Rules, the ANKC Ltd Rules and the regulatory environment of Common Law and legislative obligations associated with State and Local Government bodies. The officers of Council and members of supporting Committees are not renumerated for their services or travelling expenses. Any member considering nomination to a position on the Council should understand that regular evening meetings must be attended, and one must have available time to commit to the work involved including participating in various Council Committee meetings and activities. You must be prepared to serve as a team player and be able to offer to Council with enthusiasm, skills and experience required to help chart and drive the future viability of the Association. How to Motivate your Dog with Positive Training by Joe Law - 20 January 2013
To
train your retriever you must understand what motivates him. If your dog, knowing that you have food in your possession, approaches you with beseeching eyes it will be obvious what he is seeking. You will also know that he is trying to devise a way to convince you to part with that food in his favour. At that moment you will be in a position to do some collective bargaining and all you will need to do is devise a way of communicating your part of the deal. In this situation food is used as a primary motivator for getting the response you want. In retrieving breeds that have a strong prey drive, the opportunity to retrieve or even to take hold of some favourite object can be used as a primary reinforcer for achieving the response you desire. Secondary reinforcers (also referred to as conditioned reinforcers) are those things that a dog learns to recognise as valuable because of their association with primary reinforcers. When a dog hears the sound of a dish being scraped or of a bag being rattled and then sprints towards that sound it is because he has learnt the sounds are associated with food. If your dog will come running to those sounds it should be possible to train your

dog to respond to any distinct sound as long as it perceives there is some reward for doing so. By assessing your dog’s personality and social inclinations secondary reinforcers such as praise, affection or simply the joy of being with you can all be used as motivators. An important technique in the art of positive training is sometimes referred to as bridging. The main purpose of the bridge is to mark a specific behaviour letting a dog know that a reward is coming. In conjunction with a consistent and repetitious course of training, a “click” or “one syllable word” will become a conditioned reinforcer in its own right. That one syllable bridge word ( such as Yes! or Good! ) delivered in an upbeat fashion is the lynchpin in positive retriever training. This enables the trainer to mark behaviours at a great distance and then administer a reward once the dog has returned to you. It is only by building up the power of secondary reinforcers that you will be able to teach a dog to perform consistently at a distance without resorting to force methods.

The Labrador Retriever Club of SA conducted their weekend of trials on 25th and 26th July at the property Cordola in Morgan. A totally South Australian affair again still due to border closures.

The retrieving trialling season will be all but over when you read this. 3 week-ends in August in the Riverland and only the Novice Teams Cup to go, after that where our aspiring judge may be tested for her licence.

SUSPENSION Ukrainian Kennel Union (UKU) informs the FCI members and contract partners that Mrs Yuliana ANTONENKO has been suspended as UKU breeder (FCI kennel name: YULIANT) for a period of 1 year, from 6/03/2020 until 5/03/2021. She is not allowed to breed with her dogs and use her kennel name during this period. SUSPENSION Ukrainian Kennel Union (UKU) informs the FCI members and contract partners that Mr Oleksandr Bereza has been suspended as exhibitor and handler. He is not allowed to enter or handle any dogs in FCI international events for a period of 1 year, from 23/07/2020 until 22/07/2021.
The Dances with Dogs Handlers-Only Workshop was an outstanding success! Attendees appreciated the opportunity to focus entirely on themselves without distraction from their dogs. Here is some of their Feedback. “I learned a lot and thoroughly enjoyed myself. My brain continues to explode with new knowledge and ideas”. Jeannine “Thought-provoking. I now feel better informed/armed to participate in DWD”. Shauna “I had so much fun listening to people’s music and when we were dancing as a group”. Jane “So much useful information in such an enjoyable format”. Sandy “As someone new to this sport I gained a lot of knowledge and confidence.” Carolyn “Felt quite inspired to get our groove on and keep training.” Charmaine As a result of this exercise, it is anticipated we will be seeing more confident performances and a greater participation rate in DWD Competitions in the future. In response to attendees’ comments, a similar Workshop – with some differences - is under consideration for early next year. Workshop attendees wearing their hats for one of the ‘acting out’ exercises.
On Sunday 2nd August a group of 12 participants enjoyed a full day of learning about the wonderful world of DWD – without their dogs! The purpose was to help handlers gain greater knowledge of this unique dog sport and give them more confidence to enjoy competing and gaining good scores. Topics covered were: Focussing on mind and body; Finding your inner rhythm; Rules and Guidelines; Score Sheets and Judges Tips; Choreography; Routine Design; Scripts; Floor Plan; Musical Interpretation; Selecting Music and Costuming. There was also a practical component where everyone took to the floor and danced!

This is a part of New Zealand that I had not had an opportunity to visit before and people told me it was a very beautiful part of the North Island. I was not alone on this trip, my co-judges were friends Joy and Pauline Lim who I had known for a number of years. They were already in Auckland having a few days holiday before our judging assignment. I arrived at Auckland airport and cleared customs – no problem. It was around lunchtime but there was nobody there to meet me. I tried a couple of phone calls but had no luck and decided to take a cab to the hotel where I met up with Joy and Pauline. A quick walk down the road so we could pick up a case of the local brew, Red Lion, and we were in business. It was a lovely warm afternoon so shorts and singlets were the most sensible clothes to wear while sitting on the balcony sampling the beer. A couple of hours later a phone call that Pauline answered from the Secretary of the dog club to say that Mr Lewington had not arrived on the flight. Pauline explained that I was already there and she must have had the flight times confused. The lady said she would call in to the hotel and welcome us to New Zealand. About an hour later there was a knock on the door and a very prim and proper lady came into the room. She looked rather shocked to see Joy and me sitting on the balcony enjoying a quiet beer. She said a quick hello and welcome to New Zealand and took off again. We thought no more of it. Later that day, there was another knock on the door and it was a man by the name of Barry Madden who was President of the North Island Dog Club. He explained he would be picking us up in the morning and taking us up to Wangara. We gave him a bottle of beer and he sat chatting and he told us that he had phoned the Secretary earlier that day and he asked her had the judges arrived, she responded with “Have they arrived? They arrived alright, we have a crazy Chinaman and a mad Pom who looks like he has just come out of jail and they are both drunk” which of course we were not. We did laugh and Barry thought was hilarious but confessed he was a little worried with her explanation of us. Barry drove us up to Wangara the next day where we rented a small car and drove up to the Bay of Islands. We spent a pleasant day exploring the small seaside towns and finished off with a boat trip across the bay. But the story doesn’t end there. Show day and the Secretary, same lady, was to pick us up at 8 am from the Motel and take us to the show. So Joy and I decided that we should get our own back on her for her comments when she first met us. When the poor lady arrived to pick us up Joy and I were standing outside our motel rooms in suit jacket, shirt and tie, waistcoat and board shorts. The look on her face when she pulled up was just wonderful. She looked absolutely horrified and asked why we were dressed as we were, we told her we always dress like that when we judged overseas. Luckily, Pauline was on hand and explained it was just a joke and calmed the lady down. We had a wonderful days judging but the Secretary kept right away from us all weekend and it was unlikely we would get an invite back there again. It just shows you never know what will happen when you go away on a judging assignment.
