Chairman's REPORT
Dear Members,
As we move into the early months of 2026, it is pleasing to see DOGS NSW continuing to make steady and positive progress across a wide range of activities. Your Board and Executive remain focused on strengthening the organisation, improving transparency and ensuring DOGS NSW is well placed for a sustainable and inclusive future.
One of the most important pieces of work underway is our strategic planning process. The Strategic Planning Committee has now held its third workshop and remains on track to deliver a comprehensive Strategic Plan in March 2026. This Plan will guide decision-making, investment and priorities over the coming years. Once endorsed by the Board, it will be shared with members at the first Town Hall meeting for 2026.
Open and genuine communication with members remains a priority. Four Town Hall meetings are planned during the year, providing opportunities for members to hear directly from Directors, ask questions, share ideas and provide feedback in a respectful and constructive environment. These sessions are an important part of strengthening engagement and ensuring your voices are heard.
The Board has also continued to focus on improving governance . A formal Board Action List is being introduced to clearly track decisions and responsibilities, helping maintain momentum on agreed priorities. Work is also underway on a Board Calendar to improve Director visibility and engagement at key events across the year. A key priority in the coming months will be a governance review that the Board will lead with an assembled governance team, under the “Governance Framework Working Party”.
Member involvement continues to be one of DOGS NSW’s greatest strengths. I would like to thank members who have already expressed interest in the Organisational Knowledge Tree and the Coalition of the Willing volunteer register . These initiatives recognise the valuable skills, experience and goodwill within our membership and will play an important role in supporting projects, implementing strategy and helping the organisation grow.
At Orchard Hills, the Board has approved an important upgrade to the underground mains power supply. This investment will significantly improve reliability and capacity across the site, particularly in performance and sporting areas, and better support events, exhibitors and clubs. We are also pleased to advise that further news will be shared shortly regarding the return of herding activities to Orchard Hills.
As we head into a busy year, including the wonderful Sydney Royal and other major events, I would like to take a moment to acknowledge the dedicated office staff, volunteers and committees who support our members every day. Respect, kindness and patience in all interactions are essential to maintaining a positive and supportive community. Please ensure we look after one another and treat each other as we would expect to be treated ourselves.
Thank you for your continued support and engagement. Together, we are building a stronger, more contemporary DOGS NSW for the benefit of current and future generations.
Kind Regards
Ross Sinclair

Editor's
MESSAGE
25, 50 & 60 Year Members
This month welcomes the second year of the Canine Sports Spectacular on Saturday 7 March, and I do hope that members come along to enjoy all of the different sports on offer throughout the day. Last year's event was really fun and this year is shaping up to have lots of the general public coming along to give their dog a go at what's on offer. Do come along and support this great event and join in the fun!
The Australia Day weekend proved to be action-packed, (despite the hot weather), not only with the Australia Day Championship Show and festivities, but also with the Grounds Development Committee's Championship Show and hosting of the ScentWork and SprintDog™ Trials.
Coverage of the Australia Day Show and festivities commences on page 8. The Grounds Development Committee Championship Show coverage commences on page 13 and ScentWork and SprintDog™ commences on page 25.
Not many members have the opportunity to take their dog to work with them, but DOGS NSW member Leanne Duval is the exception to the norm. Leanne works at Santa Sophia Catholic College in Western Sydney, as the College’s Teacher Librarian, and brings her Wire Fox Terrier 'Carlo' to work with her each day, where he supports students from Kindergarten through to Year 12. Read Carlo's story and how he is helping young people to learn, connect and care, commencing page 16.
We also have a most informative article on Pet Proofing your home and being aware of some of the hidden, and not-so-hidden dangers to your dog and/or puppy, in both the inside and outside areas of your home. There are also many links to further reading on different topics, as well as links to downloadable emergency fact sheets. The feature article commences on page 31.
The spotlight feature for March is the pint-sized Shetland Sheepdog, small is size, but with a keen intelligence and aptitude to training, which makes them suitable for many performance disciplines. They are affectionate, with a easy going personaity and thrive on attention and praise.
Finally, the winner of January's 'Vetnex' Competition is Janelle Woodward. Congratulations Janelle!

Celebrating Leaders in One Health, One Welfare and Professional Practice
The Veterinary Practitioners Board, New South Wales, have announced the recipients of the prestigious 2025 Centenary Awards, recognising veterinary excellence across the many fields that protect the health of animals, people and the environment. The awards were presented at the Board’s Annual General Meeting on Monday, 17 November, honouring John House, Tanya Carter and Ian Lean for their outstanding contributions to the pillars of One Health, One Welfare and Professional Practice.
While Bondi Vet may be the familiar face of the profession, veterinarians across NSW shape public health and safety through critical work in food safety, biosecurity, research, academia, emergency response, military service, shelter medicine, wildlife conservation and more.
“Veterinarians don’t just care for animals; we safeguard people, communities and the environment. Our work sits at the intersection of science, ethics and public wellbeing,” said Dr Magdoline Awad, President of the Veterinary Practitioners Board.
The Centenary Awards were established in 2024 to mark 100 years since the Veterinary Surgeons Act 1923 formalised veterinary registration in NSW. Following the centenary celebrations, the Board recognised the need for an ongoing program to promote excellence across diverse fields of veterinary practice. For the 2025 Awards, recipients were selected by a Board-appointed committee with expertise in One Health, One Welfare and Professional Practice, following a robust nomination and review process.
“This year’s honourees showcase the enormous contribution veterinarians make to NSW – an impact that is all too often overlooked in national honours awarded to other medical professions,” said Dr Awad. “Each of the recipients represent the best of what our profession stands for: rigorous scientific expertise, ethical leadership and a deep commitment to the welfare of animals and the people who care for them.”
Congratulations to the 2025 Centenary Award Recipients
Adjunct
Professor Dr Ian Lean – Professional Practice Award
University of Sydney Adjunct Professor Dr Ian Lean is the Managing Director of Scibus and Cows R Us. He has provided consulting and research services to support ruminant production businesses, government and industry. In addition to significant contributions to the peerreviewed scientific literature in agriculture and veterinary science, he is acknowledged nationally and internationally as a leading dairy scientist and has received numerous awards, including the Gilruth Prize in 2009, leading to the awarding of a Doctor of Veterinary Science.
Veterinarian Dr Tanya Carter – One Welfare Award
Veterinarian Dr Tanya Carter is honoured for establishing and successfully managing a community orientated veterinary practice, the Haberfield Veterinary Hospital in Sydney. Additionally, she has served as President of the Animal Welfare and Ethics special interest group of the Australian Veterinary Association, attained post-graduate qualifications and published in animal welfare, ethics and law. She has also received both national and international recognition for her contributions.
Associate Professor Dr John House – One Health Award
University of Sydney Associate Professor Dr John House is recognised for his outstanding contributions in the areas of advanced veterinary diagnostics, disease prevention, herd health, animal welfare and food system resilience. The Committee noted, in particular, his contributions to research, antimicrobial stewardship, education, and mentorship.
A Century of Service and Community Impact
Over the past century, more than 11,700 veterinarians have served across NSW, protecting the health of animals and communities alike. Today, almost 5,000 veterinarians are currently registered with the Board.
“Whether it’s disaster response or pro-bono local initiatives, vets regularly volunteer their time and skills including in regions with fewer resources. Many also help upskill colleagues internationally so communities can sustainably care for animals – work that often goes unrecognised,” she said. Together, the 2025 recipients demonstrate the breadth and resilience of modern veterinary careers, spanning everything from research and teaching to community practice and ethical leadership.
“A Day of Aussie Summer Fun” was the theme of the 2026 Australia Day Show, organised by the DOGS NSW Library and Archives Committee, and, with the sun shining and the sound of happy kids filling the air, the day was a great success!
The Committee’s aim for the day was to bring a spirit of joy and celebration back to dog shows, recognising that they can sometimes become overly serious, but acknowledging Australia Day is a day of togetherness and celebration, and an ideal opportunity for us to remember we are a community with so much to unite us.
With something for everyone, the day featured a highly successful Great Aussie BBQ, a slip-and-slide plus other water activities and games, face painting, backyard cricket, soccer for the whole family, free Zooper Doopers and slushies, a colouring-in competition and best of all, fun throughout the day with our very special guest, Bluey. It would be hard to find a show all year with a more family-friendly and fun-filled atmosphere. Bluey took her role of spreading joy very seriously, attracting a large following of delighted children wherever she went, meeting dogs and exhibitors, posing for selfies, and even handing out hugs to the Judges! Australia’s favourite dog celebrating Australia Day with dog people - it doesn’t get much better than that.
Congratulations to our panel of judges, the majority of whom were judging their groups for the first time. They clearly enjoyed their assignments and produced a wonderful line-up for Mrs Vickie Harris (NSW), judging her first ever General Specials. Best in Show was awarded to Thompson and Power’s Boxer, American Ch / Supreme Ch South Willow’s Shake N Bake (IMP USA). Runner-Up Best in Show was also awarded to a Utility Group exhibit: Steele, Burton, Taylor and Turay’s Siberian Husky, A20 Ch / C.I.B Ch/ Supreme Ch Taejaan How the West Was Won (AI). Congratulations to all the winners.
The Library and Archives Committee is a newly formed Committee, appointed in late November 2025, and it has already proven to be an incredibly hardworking and enthusiastic team. We are committed to rejuvenating and promoting the DOGS NSW Education Centre as a vibrant hub of knowledge, information and support for anyone wishing to learn more about pure bred dogs, their history and their purpose. We are also committed to engaging children in our community to assist our organisation’s sustainability for the future.
A big thank you to this wonderful new Committee for all their hard work putting together a hugely successful show in such a short time frame. Thanks also to the judges, hard-working stewards, our chief steward Tony Tau and official photographer Barbara Killworth, as well as our kid wranglers and raffle sellers - the children of the Weber, Duval and Ballard families - whose leadership and hard work bodes well for the future of dog shows.

Distinguished Service Award Mrs Bernadette Merchant
Well-known community member and pioneer breeder and exhibitor of Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dogs, Bernadette Merchant , was presented with a Distinguished Service Award by DOGS NSW Vice-President, Christina Rafton during the lunch break. A well-deserved and significant moment not only for Bernadette and family, but also her many friends across the dog world.
Below is what was read to those in attendance at the Australia Day Show for the award to Bernadette:
I am here today on behalf of the Board of Directors of DOGS NSW to present one of our highest awards to a very deserving member, who joined the then RASKC on 1 August 1986, and then bred her first litter of Border Collies on 18 October the next year.
But Border Collies were not to be the breed that she would become the ‘doyen’ of. It was another in the Working Dog group that she is an authority on, having bred her first litter of Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dogs on 21 December 1992.
Her involvement in the breed began long before that date, as an integral member of a development register which was formed in our bi-centennial year of 1988, the first breed in the World (it is believed) to be resurrected by a ‘grading scheme’ from various specimens from across the whole continent. Quite literally, before this, the breed was almost on the verge of extinction with as few as 50 specimens on the ANKC database. Then, in May 1999, a three year moratorium was placed on any change to this breed’s name and a survey was initiated by ANKC. It was because of the intense support and wide-reaching lobbying by Bernadette and friends that produced recognition of the breed’s heritage, with the addition of ‘Australian’ to the name on 1 January 2002.
Her involvement reached far beyond compiling and presenting lectures, writing breed notes and very importantly, the submissions for acceptance and recognition of the breed by FCI which was approved on 25 October 1995.
Bernadette has exported 13 dogs, bred 21 Champions, 6 Grand Champions and 2 Supreme Champions. But the dog that will never be forgotten is GRAND.CH. AMBAJAYE HIGH TAIL IT aka ‘Legend.’ He not only won Best Australian Working Dog in Group, but also the ‘Best Exhibit in the Working Dog Group’ at one of Australia’s most prestigious shows, Sydney Royal 2007.
It gives me the greatest pleasure to present the DOGS NSW award for ‘Distinguished Service’ to Mrs Bernadette Merchant.

Lastly, our heartfelt thanks to John Comerford for his invaluable assistance.
Our show started with sweepstakes and a fabulous entry of handlers including Tiny Tots, who were extremely pleased with their prizes donated by Karen West of Blingy Dog Leads.
We were fortunate to have secured very generous sponsors namely Royal Canin, Knose Pet Insurance, Di-Vetelact, Delete, Orivet, Dogzonline, Blingy Dog Leads, Debbie’s Doggie Creations, IV San Bernard Australia, Eye Envy and Marellen Show Ribbons. Our officials received a beautiful pin from Rachel Wray of Perrault Rosettes UK, who also donated rosette key rings to the Best in Show and Runner Up Best in Show winners. They are something just a little bit special.
The raffle was won by Tracy Farrell, second place Liz Nelson and third place Michelle Martin.
We were pleased to be able to again add support to the Share the Dignity Charity which is a passion of our member and friend Tanya Scales.
Thanks to Harry from Harry’s Kebabs, we hosted a slushy happy hour that was a big hit during the warm evening.

Why Education about Pedigree Dogs Matter
How 'Carlo the Wire Fox Terrier' Is Helping Young People Learn, Connect and Care
At Santa Sophia Catholic College in Western Sydney, learning doesn’t stop at the classroom door. Alongside literacy, well-being and personal development, students are also discovering something often misunderstood: what responsibly bred pedigree dogs are, why they exist, and how they can positively contribute to the community.
At the heart of this learning is Carlo, a registered Wire Fox Terrier and DOGS NSW member, who quietly demonstrates that education about dogs, especially from an early age, plays a vital role in building empathy, understanding and responsible attitudes that last a lifetime.
Education Begins With Exposure
Carlo, registered as Beagelee Kingsman, was bred by Leanne and Christophe Duval with careful attention to temperament, health and breed type. Leanne Duval, the College’s Teacher Librarian, brings Carlo to work with her each day, where he supports students from Kindergarten through to Year 12.
Named after St. Carlo Acutis, Carlo embodies joy, calm and connection, qualities that make him a natural fit in a school environment. Since his first official visit in December 2025, he has become a familiar and reassuring presence. Students who once counted down the days to meet him through colouring-in competition now understand his role as part of the school’s wellbeing and learning framework.
Importantly, Carlo also provides a real-world opportunity to talk about what “pedigree” actually means. For many children, and adults, this is their first chance to learn that registered purebred dogs are not just about appearance, but about predictability, purpose and responsibility.
Why Learning About Pedigree Dogs at School Matters
Schools are uniquely placed to shape lifelong attitudes. Teaching children how dogs are bred, trained and cared for, especially through lived experience, helps them understand:
• why temperament and health matter
• how selective breeding supports predictability and safety
• the difference between responsible breeding and unplanned production
• how dogs have been developed for specific roles and environments
Carlo’s consistent, calm behaviour allows students to see these lessons in action. His reliability is not accidental; it is the result of generations of thoughtful breeding, reinforced by training and professional oversight from Dr. Robert Zammit (see pictured right with 'Carlo').
Rather than being an abstract concept, pedigree education becomes tangible, relevant and engaging, especially when students interact with the dog daily.
Learning In Action: Carlo's Roles at School
Kindergarten Welcome Ambassador
For new students, school can feel overwhelming. Carlo helps soften that transition. His manageable size, predictable responses and friendly presence help nervous children feel safe and seen, often before words can do the same.
Learning In Action: Carlo's Roles at School
Reading Dog in the Library
Carlo supports literacy by offering a calm, non-judgmental audience. Children who struggle with confidence often read more willingly when he is present, learning that patience and encouragement, traits shaped through breeding and training, matter just as much as academic skills.
Positive Behaviour Rewards
Across year levels, time with Carlo has become a motivator for positive behaviour. Because his temperament is stable and interactions are consistently safe, teachers can confidently use him as part of behaviour-support strategies.
Dog Club Leader
Dog Club provides structured education around:
• safe and respectful interaction
• basic care and responsibility
• understanding different breeds and their purposes
Students don’t just learn about Carlo, they learn how to behave around all dogs, building knowledge they carry into the wider community.
Emotional Regulation Support (K-Year 12)
From early childhood to senior years, Carlo helps students manage stress and emotions. His predictability is especially important here; knowing how a dog will respond creates trust, which is essential when children are learning to regulate big feelings.
Education Through Responsible Breeding
Carlo’s presence gently challenges common misconceptions. He shows that dogs bred to a standard are not limited to show environments, nor are they detached from everyday life. In fact, the very traits selected for responsible breeding: soundness, confidence, adaptability and temperament, are what make dogs like Carlo suitable for demanding roles in schools.
This is a powerful educational message, especially in a culturally and linguistically diverse school community where students may have very different experiences with dogs. Carlo becomes a shared point of understanding, cutting across language and background.
A Continuing Legacy of Learning
Carlo follows in the footsteps of Arlo, the groodle well-being dog who has supported Santa Sophia since 2020. Together, they represent a thoughtful approach to animal education: one that values preparation, suitability and welfare above trands or assumptions.
As Carlo matures, students in leadership and enrichment programs take increasing responsibility for his care and routines. In doing so, they learn that good outcomes with dogs, like good outcomes in life, come from knowledge, consistency and respect.
Why this Matters for the Future
Education about pedigree dogs is not about promoting one type of dog over another. It is about giving young people accurate information so they can make informed, compassionate decisions as future dog owners, parents and community members.
Carlo’s story shows that when children understand why dogs are bred, trained and handled responsibly, they grow into adults who value welfare, safety and accountability.
Carlo reminds us that pedigree dogs have an important place beyond the show ring, as educators, companions and contributors to society. Schools provide a powerful platform to share this understanding early, when curiosity is high and values are still forming.
*At Santa Sophia Catholic College, a registered purebred is quietly shaping hearts and minds every day. Not through debate, but through experience. Not through explanation alone, but through presence.
From his distinctive wiry coat to his confident, steady nature, Carlo is unmistakably a Wire Fox Terrier. More importantly, he is proof that education, especially early education, can change how the next generation understands dogs, breeding and responsibility for the better.

Shetland Sheepdog
History / Country of Origin - Scotland
Shelties are small, long-haired, working dogs of great beauty, originally bred to herd sheep in the rugged terrain of the Shetland Islands, north of the United Kingdom and west of Norway and were settled by the Norse (Vikings) in 920AD.
These settlers brought with them cattle, sheep and dogs; and archaeological remains of the dogs indicate they were of typical Spitz descent, resembling what we now know as Buhund and related breeds. These dogs were an all purpose dog, useful around the crofts or farms, but with no specific role, in what was a hard windswept environment where only low and sparse vegetation could grow and few sheep, cows and ponies could exist; a hard and poor environment for man and animals alike to survive.
It is thought, that with the importation of some sheep to increase the vigour of the flocks, in 1760, a dog(s) was also introduced, being of what then was called, The Scottish Shepherd Dog, which is the ancestor in part of both the Collie (Rough) and the modern day Border Collie. It was not until 1914 that the English Shetland Sheepdog Club was formed and today boasts the largest membership. By 1914, astoundingly, the breed was recognised by the UK Kennel Club and the first breed standard was approved. Much development to standardise the wildly varying type took place over the next 20 years, with one faction wanting to preserve the more ‘traditional’ Shetland dog and a rival faction, whose aim was to produce a Collie (Rough) in miniature. Inevitably the Collie (Rough) influence, through repeated outcrosses to the breed and intense inbreeding, won the often acrimonious battle over the rather fewer in number ‘traditional’ dogs. In 1914 a dog named Woodvold was shown and achieved his title in 1915. His dam was a Collie (Rough) named Greta and together with a dog called Wallace, whose unregistered sire Butcher Boy, become a founder of the breed as we know it. In 1915 the first ever Challenge Certificate was won in the UK by a black and white bitch, Frea, and in the same year the tricolour male Clifford Pat became the breed’s first Champion, winning the first CC at the breed’s first appearance at Crufts in 1916.
The first Shetland Sheepdog Championship show held in Australia was conducted by the Shetland Sheepdog Club of NSW in November 1960 in conjunction with the Great Dane Club and was judged by Mr Wes Stacey. Dog Challenge and Best in Show was CH. Supiter of Shelert (Imp UK); Bitch Challenge and Best Opposite Sex in Show was CH. Almaroy Apple Blossom.
Appearance
Their appearance resembles that of a small Collie (Rough), but they are indeed an individual breed with features, apart from size, that distinguish them from their larger relatives. They are a small, long-haired, working dog of great beauty, free from cloddiness and coarseness; action lithe and graceful. Outline symmetrical, so that no art appears out of proportion to whole. Abundant coat, mane and frill, shapely head and sweet expression.
Head and skull: head refined and elegant with no exaggerations; when viewed from top or side a long, blunt wedge, tapering from ear to nose.
Eyes: Medium size; obliquely set; almond shape. Dark brown except in the case of merles, where one or both may be blue or blue flecked.
Colour: Sable; Tri-colour; Blue Merles; Black and White; Black and Tan.
Sizes: dogs 37cm at withers; bitches 35.5cm at withers.
Characteristics
Alert, gentle, intelligent, strong and active.
Temperament & Trainability
The Australian Breed Standard summarises the Shetland Sheepdog’s temperament as “affectionate and responsive to his owner, reserved towards strangers, never nervous”.
Shelties are hardy, durable little sheepdogs which thrive on attention and praise. They are gentle dogs, making them great companions for children and adults alike. Like all working dogs they are quite active but, because of the smaller size, suit the average suburban-size backyard while also enjoying walks or excursions. They make superb house pets and are very adaptable.
Shelties possess a keen intelligence and aptitude to training, which makes them suitable for many performance disciplines. They perform at the highest levels of Obedience, Agility, Herding and many other dog-sports activities. Their easy going nature makes them great companions for other pets. As with all dogs, socialisation and training from a young age is highly recommended.

Maintenance
Shelties are double coated, with a harsh, longer outer coat and a soft, dense undercoat; these were developed to be durable and weather resistant when the dogs worked stock on the Shetland Isles. While regular maintenance is necessary, this is not as much work as may first be assumed. Most breeders recommend a thorough 10-minute brushing about once a week to keep the lovely coat free from knots and tangles, with particular attention paid to legs, stomach and behind the ears. Regular baths will also help keep the coat in good condition. Shelties will shed their undercoat approximately every six months.
Suitability
Shelties will suit almost any family or home situation that can give them the love and attention they deserve. Their size makes them suitable to many families and their gentle, intelligent and affectionate nature also makes them loyal and endearing pets.
Health
Shelties are primarily a healthy breed of dog, with an average lifespan of between 12 to 16 years and only a few known congenital conditions, as with all animals (and humans).
Some Shelties may be affected by an eye condition called Collie Eye Anomaly. Collie Eye Anomaly (CEA) is a congenital, recessively inherited eye defect that affects the development of the choroid (an important tissue under the retina) and is also found in other breeds.
Responsible breeders strive to decrease the incidence of such eye conditions in the Shetland Sheepdog through careful breeding plans and by supporting further veterinary research.

Australia Day weekend
A Celebration of Canine Excellence at DOGS NSW
Words: Kath Purkis
The DOGS NSW Grounds Development Committee hosted three Trials that showcased the abilities of our community over Australia Day long weekend. The festivities kicked off on Saturday, 24 January 2026, with both a Scent Work Trial and a SprintDogTM Trial running at DOGS NSW.
The weekend continued with additional SprintDog TM Trials on Monday, 26 January , marking the Australia Day weekend a true celebration of canine sport and dedication. We had a very large kangaroo come to pay us a visit trackside on Australia Day, before our SprintDogTM Trial started.
Both events highlighted the incredible bond between handler and dog, built through countless hours of training and mutual trust. The Scent Work Trial demonstrated the commitment required in this sport, with early check-in opening at 6:15am and judging commencing at 7:00am sharp. Teresa Kernahan and Tracie Donnelly, both experienced NSW Judges, judged competitors in Excellent Vehicles and Excellent Containers elements, with dogs working to detect the scents of birch, clove, and cypress. Congratulations to all our Scent Work exhibitors who qualified and got a place in our trial. Royal Canin, Snout Snacks and BX Earth also generously donated Judge's pick prizes.

A Celebration of Canine Excellence at DOGS NSW
The two SprintDog™ Trials , overseen by Judges Michelle Gurney, Ally Turnbull and Kath Purkis on Saturday and Monday, represented another facet of canine talent. The trials celebrated the natural athleticism, drive and the bond between dogs and their owners. Lure Driver, Daniel Blackwell ensured exhibitors, new and seasoned, all had a fun time with their dogs in the trial. Gordon Setter, 'Richard' had his first SprintDog TM Trial and his whole family had a great time at the event.
A big thank you for all our volunteers at our three Trials. Without our volunteers we couldn’t run our Scent Work and SprintDog TM Trials. Special thanks to our BBQ team, who ensured exhibitors were well fed for our SprintDogTM Trials. Also thanks to Karen Magick for donating Australia Day themed items, which we used to decorate the SprintDogTM Trial on Australia Day. Many thanks to the DOGS NSW staff and Grounds staff for the continued dedication to improving the grounds for exhibitors. Special thanks to our Trial Secretary across three trials, Steph Betts.
The SprintDogTM Trial saw many breeds fly down the track including Field Spaniels, Gordon Setters, Brittanys, Finnish Lapphunds, Griffon Bruxellois, Salukis and Hungarian Vizslas. With over 290 entries over the weekend, the three trials were a flying success for the DOGS NSW Grounds Development Committee.
The qualification opportunities available through these trials also serve an important purpose, allowing dogs and handlers to progress through the SprintDogTM and Scent Work titles of their chosen discipline, working toward titles that represent genuine achievement and the bond between owners and dogs.
What truly made the Australia Day weekend events special is the sense of community they fostered. From SprintDogTM newcomers observing their first trial, to seasoned competitors pursuing advanced titles, these trials brought together people united by their love of dogs and appreciation for canine sport.

Sprint Marshal Alison Minnett said:
“As we celebrated Australia Day weekend this year, we also celebrated the dedication of the handlers, the remarkable abilities of their dogs, and the community that comes together to support and encourage excellence in canine sport.”
“I love the Sprint Marshal role because it allows me to support every dog and handler as they run, whether they are new to the sport or experienced. Over the weekend I watched 200 dogs of all breeds. It is a genuine joy to see the happiness SprintDogTM brings to both humans and their canine best friends alike, and a sincere thank you to the Grounds Development Committee for hosting such a well‑organised and fun event.”
Ally Turnbull, SprintDog™ Judge said:
“The Australia Day Weekend of SprintDogTM hosted by the DOGS NSW Grounds Development Committee was another success for the sport. Comradery amongst the Trialers was high and an absolute joy to watch the many different breeds from all registers, sprint the chute.
Congratulations to every dog that gained a qualification or Title. Acknowledgement also to Kath Purkis, Steph Betts and the DOGS NSW Grounds Development Committee, who pulled the weekend together. Special mention also to the many volunteers, Lure Driver and Sprint Marshals that make the SprintDogTM Trials happen.”

Pet Proofing Your Home A Room-by-Room Guide to Keeping Curious Paws Safe
Pets are cherished members of the family, and much like small children, they explore their surroundings with enthusiasm rather than caution. From sharp tools and toxic plants to tempting food scraps and loose cords, everyday household items can quickly turn into hazards. The good news? With a little planning and awareness, you can create a safe, pet‑friendly environment that supports a long, happy, and healthy life for your furry companions.
THE BACKYARD
For most pets, the backyard is an exciting outdoor playground, but it can also be one of the most dangerous spaces if it’s not properly managed. Begin by checking fences and gates for gaps, weak spots, or loose panels that could lead to escapes or injuries. Choose pet-safe lawn treatments, avoid toxic fertilisers, and research plants carefully before adding anything new to your garden. Ensure that your pool fencing is secure and is council approved. Also be mindful of bites from spiders, ticks and snakes, particularly if you live in the country or close to bushland.
Standing water should be removed to prevent mosquito breeding, while rubbish bins and compost containers should be secured with tight-fitting lids to stop curious pets from climbing inside. With regular inspections and mindful garden choices, your yard can remain a safe and stimulating place for pets to explore.

• Pet-Safe Garden Planning: Creating a pet-safe garden involves careful planning and thoughtful plant selection to balance safety and beauty. Key considerations include:
1. Plant Selection: Choose non-toxic plants such as camellias, bottlebrush, snapdragons, marigolds and bamboo palm. Avoid toxic plants like oleander, lilies, and azaleas.
Resources: 37 Plants that are Poisonous to Dogs: https://morningchores.com/plants-poisonous-to-dogs/ Toxic and Non Toxic Plant List to Dogs – https://www.aspca.org/pet-care/animal-poison-control/dogs-plant-list
2. Fencing & Gates
3. Raised Garden Beds
Install sturdy fencing that suits your pet’s size and breed. Cat owners may consider netting to prevent climbing escapes. Check with your local council regarding fence heights and restrictions. Many dogs are natural-born diggers. However, you can also utilise deterrents or install physical barriers that complements your fence. For example, planting shrubs around the fence line or installing landscaping rocks can do the trick. Some more permanent methods involving simple underground barriers are also available (see pictured right).
Raised garden beds protect plants, particularly seedlings, while keeping pets’ paws out of delicate soil.
4. Digging Zones
5. Water Features
DECKS AND PATIOS
Provide a designated digging area, such as a sandpit, to redirect natural digging instincts.
Safe fountains or shallow ponds can provide hydration and cooling while enhancing your garden’s atmosphere. A shallow kid's wading pool placed in a shady spot in the garden can also provide a cool release for your dog on a warm to hot day.
Decks and patios are natural gathering spaces for families and pets alike, but they often contain hidden dangers. Sharp furniture edges, exposed nails, fire pits and outdoor chemicals should be carefully managed. Keep clutter to a minimum, store cleaning products and lighter fluids in locked, weatherproof containers, and regularly inspect decking boards for splinters or loose fastenings.
Electrical cords should be covered, grilling utensils stored out of reach, and hot surfaces carefully monitored. Whether you’re hosting a barbecue or enjoying a quiet evening outdoors, a few safety checks can help your pet relax alongside you without risk.

GARAGES & SHEDS
These storage areas often contain the most dangerous substances in a home. Antifreeze, paint, solvents, pesticides, and cleaning products can be lethal to pets, even in small amounts. Store all chemicals in locked cabinets or on high shelves, never on the floor, and regularly check containers for leaks.
GARAGES & SHEDS
Common Pet Poisons found in garages and sheds include:
• Antifreeze (Ethylene Glycol)
• Boric Acid (often found in ant bait)
• Coolant containing toxic glycols
• Lead from batteries or old materials
• Fertilisers with toxic compounds
• Wild mushrooms
• Pesticides
For further reading:
Promptly clean up spills and ensure good ventilation to prevent harmful fumes from building up. Reducing clutter also minimises the risk of pets chewing on cords, ingesting small objects, or becoming trapped. It’s essential to keep these substances well out of reach and understand their risks.
Kitchens are full of irresistible smells and tempting leftovers, making them particularly risky for pets. Foods such as chocolate, onions, garlic, grapes and xylitol-sweetened products can be deadly. Secure food storage, sealed rubbish bins, and strict “no table scraps” rules are essential. Like childproofing, kitchen safety also means preventing burns and electric shocks. Keep pets away from hot stovetops and unplug small appliances when not in use.

• Foods That Can Be Poisonous to Pets:
The food we eat is delicious, but some of it can be toxic to our pets. When your dog or cat enjoys occasional treats from the dinner table, a home-cooked diet, or even gets into food not meant for him or her, please keep in mind that these following foods are not safe. This is even more important during the festive season when family and friends can often think they are doing your dog a favour by feeding him a special treat. https://www.dogsnsw.org.au/media/2943/december-2016-toxic-foods.pdf

LIVING ROOMS
Living rooms often double as play areas, which means extra vigilance is needed. Electrical cords should be covered or secured, candles kept well out of reach, and fragile decorations placed safely away from curious tails and paws. Heavy furniture should be anchored to prevent tipping. These simple adjustments help create a calm, shared space where both people and pets can relax safely.

BATHROOMS & LAUNDRIES
• Medications: Both human and veterinary medications can be toxic to pets. Pets should only be given medications that are specifically designed for them, and any medication should be stored in a locked cabinet to prevent accidental ingestion.
• Pesticides & Insecticides: These products can be harmful to pets, especially if ingested. It's important to use these products with caution and keep them out of reach of pets.
• Zoonoses: Pets can carry germs that can make people sick, such as salmonella. Maintaining good hygiene and keeping pets away from areas where they may carry these germs is essential.
By being aware of these hazards and taking precautions, pet owners can help ensure a safe environment for their furry companions.
Helpful Resources:
These rooms often contain highly concentrated detergents, cleaning products and medications. Always store these items in locked cabinets and keep toilet lids closed, as toilet water may contain harmful chemicals. Hot tools such as hair straighteners and curling irons should be unplugged immediately after use. Ventilation during cleaning is also important, as strong fumes can affect pets even if products aren’t directly ingested.
• Cleaning Products: Regular cleaning sprays, bathroom detergents, and laundry products can contain ingredients that can harm pets if ingested or inhaled. It's crucial to store these products securely to prevent accidental access.
• Toxicoses from Household Cleaners & Personal Care Products in Australia
Exposure of animals, particularly pets, to certain household cleaners and personal care products can cause a variety of clinical signs. Household hazards that are concerning for exposure include detergents, soaps, shampoos and bleaches. https://www.msdvetmanual.com/toxicology/toxicoses-from-household-hazards/toxicoses-from-householdcleaners-and-personal-care-products-in-animals
• What are Zoonoses?
Zoonoses, or zoonotic diseases, are diseases that can spread from animals to humans. Animals may carry germs without showing any signs of being sick. However, some of these germs may be harmful to humans. https://www.health.nsw.gov.au/Infectious/factsheets/Factsheets/staying-safe-around-pets-and-animals.pdf
BEDROOMS
Bedrooms may seem safe, but small items like jewellery, pills, cosmetics and cords can pose choking or poisoning risks. Secure blind cords, keep personal items out of reach and always check drawers, wardrobes and hampers before closing them. Providing pets with a comfortable, designated sleeping space can discourage unsafe burrowing and give them a secure place of their own to relax and sleep without disturbing your sleep.
