Congratulations to the newly elected members of the Board. In the Northern region we have Rosemary Privett replacing Alan Lee, who is retiring. In the Southern region we have Simon Mills replacing Jan Seary, who is also retiring.
In the Illawarra & South-East region we have Kyle Charnock who was voted in over Russell Britten, in Newcastle/Hunter region we have Glen Vernon who was voted in over Myron Arthur and finally in Metropolitan region we have Angus McIlrath who was voted in over Lynnette Brown. To the five new members of the Board, I offer my congratulations and hopefully we can all work productively in the coming year.
To the five Directors leaving the Board, I would, on behalf of the Board and DOGS NSW members, like to thank these hard working individuals, who have collectively served this organisation very well and faithfully in many different portfolio situations over quite a range of years. They leave the organisation in a very enviable state financially; up to date in maintenance and with a smooth and very efficiently run office. Personally, I would like to thank these outgoing Directors for all their help and support over the last two years, making my Presidency far easier to manage.
On the COVID front, it looks like we may be able to finally get out and about by mid to late October. Once the NSW population reach the 70% fully vaccinated status, the opportunities to get out and about open right up. The finer points still have to be detailed by the Government but they are talking about numbers as high as 500 people in outdoors activities, if the people are fully vaccinated.
DOGS NSW is updating the COVID-Safe protocols to adapt to the new conditions. Once these new conditions are solidified, we can look forw ard to having shows again, albeit under more restrictive conditions. We’ll keep you all informed as soon as we know anything definite in the Weekly Woof, Facebook and DOGS NSW app.

DOGS NSW Animal Welfare and Community Liasion Officer, Deirdre Crofts, has written an informative article about ‘enrichment’, which discusses not only the many aspects of social, environmental, cognitive and age status of our dogs, but also how to adapt these to all age groups, taking into consideration our canine companions age. The article commences on page 8.
We also have some expert training tips for puppies on topics such as potty and crate training, training with other dogs and lead training. There are quite a few other tips which you may not have considered, however for those with new puppies, a refresher course could be just the thing, even if you know what you’re doing. The article commences on page 20.
No one ever want to hear the ‘c’ word when it comes to any diagnosis, whether it be for humans or pets. Morris Animal Foundation are constantly doing research on cancer; identifying nutritional, genetic and environmental risk factors for cancer and other important diseases in dogs. Two articles have been written by the Foundation and feature in this edition; the first being ‘Understanding Histiocytic Sarcoma in Dogs’ (commencing page 26) and the second, ‘Tips to keep your Pet Healthy and Actions you can take to stop Cancer furever’ (commences page 13).
The first is about an uncommon, but aggressive cancer in dogs, Histiocytic Sarcoma (HS). Histiocytic sarcomas develop when specialised white blood cells, called histiocytes begin dividing uncontrollably. Because white blood cells are found in many different tissues, HS can arise almost anywhere and spread quickly. The disease affects particularly middle aged to older dogs and was first described in Bernese Mountain Dogs in the late 1970s. It has since been noted in six other breeds.
The second article discusses ways to keep your dog living a long and healthy life and includes 12 preventative measures to protect your pet against cancer, along with 10 cancer warning signs to look for. We only have our pets for a short time so let’s do what we can to prevent loosing them early to disease.
New laws came into effect on Wednesday, 25 August 2021 stopping strata schemes from passing by-laws that unreasonably prevent owners and occupiers from having companion animals. From now on, an application to keep an animal can only be refused if it ‘unreasonably interferes with another occupant’s use and enjoyment’ of their property, thanks to the hard work of the Animal Justice Party member, Hon. Emma Hurst MLC. For further news on this topic please turn to page 10.
The spotlight feature this month is the American Staffordshire Terrier, a lively, alert and intelligent breed with a courageous, confident nature. The breed is extremely strong for its size and they are quite agile, despite being very muscular and stocky in stature. With correct training and socialisation the Amstaff can become a loving, devoted and reliable member of the family. Further information on the breed can be found on page 18.
Finally, the winners of August’s ‘Woofwear’ competition, was Michelle Oldfield, Karen Hobson, Marilyn McAuliffe, Susan Turner, Rosa Lee Fratturo, Kathy Drew, Anita-kaye Malby, Korina Valentine.
Congratulations to all winners!
Congratulations to those members listed below who have reached their 50 and 25 year membership status. We would like to acknowledge these members and thank them for their continuing support of our organisation.

Enrichment is a term referred to more and more these days in relation to the appropriate care of our dogs. It is extremely important that as our puppies grow, they need exposure to day to day noises and also to be occupied with various activities that also serve to minimise destruction of lawns, gardens, furniture and prevent barking from boredom.
encompasses:
Status
Always ensure typical household noises continue around any litters that you are raising, including noises from television, radio, vacuum cleaner, hair dryer, washing machine, dishwasher, lawn mower, etc. These all help a puppy to become adjusted to noise, but environmental enrichment also extends to the dog’s other senses of touch, sight, smell and taste. Stimulation of these senses have proved very worthwhile in preventing boredom.
Provide your dog with various surfaces to walk on, toys made from a range of different sizes, shapes and textures and kong toys with different treats used. When puppies find their way to a new companion home, they will be presented with very different surroundings and experiences. Having already exposed puppies to environmental enrichment in the initial ‘Imprint Period’ (7 to 16 weeks) is especially important with the readjustment in a new home.
Many breeders also build a ‘Puppy Play Station’ with which their young puppies can interact. These can be as big or small as you think suitable and are only limited by your imagination as to what tactile objects you hang from the frame. The image on the right shows a play station with a number of different objects including chewable toys, but you can add small lightweight metal buckets and metal cupcake tins, mixed in with various toys: the clanging of the metal objects helps your puppies adjust to different noises. The pvc piping, three way connectors, plastic chains, etc are all readily available through your local hardware store or the internet.
When suitably vaccinated, you can enrol your puppy in ‘Puppy Pre-School’ conducted at many Vet Clinics. These classes are conducted by qualified trainers that are experienced in helping achieve acceptable puppy behaviour and interaction. As your puppy grows, a simple walk to the park and back will provide short physical activity for both you and your dog, but meetings with other dogs at dog parks is also an excellent opportunity for your dog to interact. Caution should be exercised at dog parks, to establish that other dogs in the area are safely controlled by their owners, before you step into the off-leash area.
To give your dog a chance to use its attributes, consider some basic obedience, trick training or scent work classes for example. There are opportunities for your dogs to test and expand their skills through training classes offered by Obedience Clubs and training organisations. There are many disciplines that your dog could undertake should they show the aptitude. Some others are:
These activities enable your dog to use its skills, whether instinctive or learned, and to also gain the social stimulation from interacting with other dogs in a controlled environment.
With advancing years, or if your dog has been left with permanent damage from an injury, it is crucial to adjust enrichment activities to suit your dog.
Dogs developing arthritis will not benefit from chasing after a Frisbee or a ball at the park if it is going to cause them any degree of pain. They may need a more tactile surface to walk on to prevent slipping. If failing eyesight is a concern, maintain the dog’s environment to ensure your dog can safely move around in an area that is familiar, thus preventing injury from bumping into unexpected objects.
Each dog is unique, therefore it is important to cater activities that your dog enjoys and is interested in. Do not force your dog to exercise beyond its comfort level. If your dog is not enthusiastic to engage in an activity, try looking for some other stimulation that your dog is keen to participate in. Snuffle mats can provide interest to dogs whose mobility is waning, for one reason or another. Monitor your dog’s weight to avoid undue stress on arthritic joints, as excessive weight will limit the activities your dog can comfortably perform.
Enrichment is an essential welfare matter for dogs and their owners and can have far-reaching benefits for both.

New laws spearheaded by Animal Justice Party MP Emma Hurst came into effect on Wednesday, August 25 2021, stopping strata schemes from passing by-laws that unreasonably prevent owners and occupiers from having companion animals.
From 25 August, strata schemes will not be able to impose blanket bans on animals in apartment complexes, and an application to keep an animal can only be refused if it ‘unreasonably interferes with another occupant’s use and enjoyment’ of their property.
The Hon. Emma Hurst MLC says, “Until now, strata complexes in New South Wales have been allowed to have by-laws that prevent people having a companion animal in their care, with nothing stopping strata management from retrospectively creating restrictions for residents who live under a strata scheme. The Animal Justice Party has changed that.
There are many reasons these laws needed to change. Thousands of animals are killed in pounds every year and by-laws were stopping families from rescuing these animals and providing them a safe and loving forever home.
Animal ban by-laws were even being brought in retrospectively - recently Colin and his greyhound Bu were facing losing their home because of a retrospective by-law that meant Colin couldn’t live with Bu in the property he owns.
These new laws will also help some of the most vulnerable members of our communities. Accommodation for victims fleeing violence with animals is one of the major reasons people delay leaving dangerous situations. Over 90% of victims report a lack of animal friendly accommodation as a barrier for fleeing violence and nearly 50% delay leaving because of issues trying to find alternative accommodation with animals.
Strata schemes were also reportedly requiring people to prove that an animal is an assistance animal in contradiction to section 9 of the Disability Discrimination Act.
Animal companionship has dramatically increased during lockdowns and by-laws could have created a threat to many families and animals across NSW if strata schemes were allowed to impose blanket animal bans, leaving families and their animals nowhere to go.
We are a nation of animal lovers, and our state must become more companion animal friendly this is the first step. Companion animals are family members and no one should have to face losing their home, especially now while we are still in the midst of a pandemic, simply because of a by-law.”

Cancer is a word no one ever wants to hear, especially when it comes to your pet’s health, yet, every year, more dogs and cats are diagnosed with cancer. Morris Animal Foundation, with your help, is working to change that. They envision a future where all cancers are treatable and more cures are possible. That’s why they invest in researchers around the world working toward better treatments, diagnostics and even cures for cancer.
There are also steps you can take now to help protect your pet from cancer. Here are some ways you can help your pet live a longer, healthier life:
1. Avoid second hand smoke. Does your pet live in a household with smokers? Evidence suggests cancer risk is increased in pets exposed to environmental tobacco. Keep your home a smoke-free zone.
2. Monitor your pet’s weight. Research suggests that obesity is a risk factor for cancer. Feeding a poor quality or imbalanced diet also may be linked to an increase in cancer risk.
3. Become an expert on your pet’s breed. Did you know that certain breeds of dogs and cats are more prone to different diseases, including cancer? Become an expert on the diseases that are common in your pet’s breed.
4. Have regular veterinary checkups. Would you see your doctor once every five years for a checkup? Skipping a yearly checkup with your pet would be similar. Regular checkups allow your veterinarian to perform a complete physical examination, which can identify abnormalities as well as establish a baseline that can be used for later comparisons.
5. Avoid long-term exposure to sunlight. As in people, light skin pigmentation combined with lots of time outside, can increase the risk for some cancers. Make sure your pet can get out of the sun and avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight when it is strongest, around midday.
6. Avoid exposure to asbestos. Just like people, there are reports of cancer related to asbestos exposure in animals. If removing this product from a home, keep pets away from the area for the duration of the process.
7. Add vegetables to their diet. At least one provocative study has suggested that adding vegetables may help decrease cancer risk.
8. Examine your pet once a month. Look in your pet’s mouth and ears, run your hands along their body and note any changes once a month; early detection is the best way to treat many diseases, including cancer.
9. Avoid exposure to lawn chemicals. Keep your pet away from applied lawn products when possible. There is some evidence for an increased cancer risk in pets exposed to applied lawn chemicals.
10. Exercise your pet regularly. Get them moving. Regular exercise will keep your pet mentally stimulated, in shape and helps lower their risk of health problems.
11. Avoid exposure to paints and solvents. One recently published study suggests a possible association between exposure to these chem icals and cancer. Try to keep your pets outside or in another room when using these substances.
12. Get to know your pet. Behaviour changes often signal a pet isn’t feeling well. Watch your pet, learn their likes and dislikes, and their sleeping and eating habits. A change in routine or demeanor could be an early sign of disease.
With these helpful tips, along with regular checkups with your veterinarian, you can help keep your pet as healthy as possible.
You can download the Pet Cancer Prevention Checklist and Pet Cancer Signs as a reminder of what you can do to help prevent cancer in your pets, including 10 common warning signs of cancer in your cat or dog: https://www.morrisanimalfoundation.org/sites/default/files/filesync/Pet-Cancer-Prevention-Checklis t.pdf
If you see any of these signs in your dog or cat, consult your veterinarian.
1. Recent lump or bump that persists or grows in size 2. Sores or wounds that do not heal 3. Weight loss with or without change in food consumption 4. Change in appetite or water consumption 5. Bleeding or discharge from any body opening 6. Offensive body odours 7. Difficulty eating, chewing, grasping or swallowing food 8. Reluctance to exercise or loss of stamina in dogs and reclusive behaviour in cats 9. Persistent lameness 10. Difficulty breathing, urinating or defecating

Poseidon Animal Health, has launched a groundbreaking new gut health product for dogs. Digestive K9 is the first product to launch for Poseidon Canine, part of the Poseidon Animal Health family. It’s a gut health supplement designed in consultation with a leading team of dog health experts, with natural gut health-boosting ingredients to support your dog’s overall health and wellbeing. Not only does Digestive K9 feature natural ingredients, which are scientifically proven to support good gut health, it also features BioK9, a powerful bespoke prebiotic, postbiotic and para-probiotic created for Poseidon Canine by international dog health experts. Not only is it your go-to product for supporting your dog to thrive, but it is easy to use, and dogs actually LIKE IT!
Linda Goldspink-Lord, co-founder of Poseidon Animal Health (see pictured above), has worked with a highly-skilled team, including a holistic veterinarian, pet nutritionist and animal naturopath, and an animal microbiologist, to formulate Digestive K9. They’ve researched the most powerful natural ingredients to boost a dog’s gut health, with many trial users reporting their dogs are more relaxed, less stressed, less anxious, with better skin, coat condition and better sleep patterns. Even older dogs got a new spring in their step. The power of the gut in impacting overall health and wellbeing is truly amazing.

One of the world’s best known American Staffordshire Terriers was ‘Pete’, who starred in the popular 1930s television program The Little Rascals and was one of the first Amstaffs registered with the American Kennel Club (AKC).
The Amstaff also featured on American propaganda posters during World War 1 with the caption “I’m neutral but not afraid of any of them”. Certainly the Amstaff is a very courageous dog and was well chosen to represent and motivate the American soldiers.
While the ancestry of the American Staffordshire Terrier dates back to the beginning of the 19th century, they were not officially recognised until the mid 1930s. During their long and sometimes confusing evolution, this breed has been known by many names including American Bull Terrier, Yankee Terrier, Staffordshire Terrier, Half and Half, and Bull and Terrier.
After the American Civil War ended in 1865, many British workers immigrated to America due to financial difficulties. They took their Bull and Terrier dogs with them and, in a very short period of time, the breed was popular among American citizens. The Bull and Terrier continued to be bred in America and over time the style of the dog changed, as did its name. In 1936 The Staffordshire Terrier Club of America was founded and the AKC officially recognised the Staffordshire Terrier.
As years went by, the differences between the British and American versions of the Staffordshire Terrier became very distinct, so in 1972, the AKC changed the name of the Staffordshire Terrier to ‘American Staffordshire Terrier’, and the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, with a standard of its own, was admitted to the AKC Stud Book.
Although the ancestors of the American Staffordshire Terrier were fighting dogs, selective breeding since the 1930s has always been moving this breed away from its fighting ancestry.
Such were the efforts of Amstaff fanciers to move away from dog fighting that, by the 1950s, the Staffordshire Terrier Club of America expelled any member who bred fighting dogs.
Dog fighting is now illegal, fortunately, but it is sometimes incorrectly cited as the early purpose of the Amstaff. In fact, it was developed as a general family and farm dog.
Early on, they were used for general farm work, hunting wild pigs, bears and other large game, and guarding the homestead. They have always been bred as a companion and family dog.
Although rarely used on the farm now, the talents that made them good all-purpose dogs are still found in the breed today.
The modern American Staffordshire Terrier, also known as the ‘Amstaff’, is highly desired as a companion dog for its love, devotion and reliability, especially with children
The Amstaff is not suited to all households. It must have a home that is willing to train and socialise it, provide regular exercise, and allow it to be a part of the whole family, then it will devote itself to all, including children.
The Amstaff is the ultimate canine athlete. It should give the impression of great strength for its size, but not be bulging with muscles like a body builder. A well put together dog, it is muscular, agile and graceful.
It is an animal of beauty and balance that allows for agility, power and elegance with smooth, flowing lines. There should be no exaggeration in any one of its attributes, nor should it lack in any of the foregoing points.
The Amstaff’s short and shiny coat is easy to maintain. A brush to remove dry skin and dead hair twice a week is ample, and a bath is only required if the dog is smelly or muddy once a fortnight is usually often enough.
The Amstaff is a highly active and affectionate dog, requiring regular exercise and activity, as well as plenty of time to interact with its human family. Socialisation and training are very important, and should begin as a puppy.
So far, no cases of hereditary ataxia have been reported in Australia, but it is a concern for the breed. Genetic testing is available to identify carriers of the condition so that they can be removed from breeding programs.
Cardiac disease, hip dysplasia and elbow problems can affect the breed, so it is important to purchase puppies only from registered breeders who can provide evidence of health testing.

As pet parents, we’ve all dealt with the task of teaching our dogs to help them adapt to our ways of living. It can be a time-consuming task to take on your own, especially if you´re not an expert. That’s why we’ve gathered a group of professional dog trainers to help you with the most common questions new pet parents have, from potty training to puppy nutrition. Read on for their expert advice:
That would depend on the breed of puppy, its temperament and what you plan to do with the puppy. Large-breed, active dogs might need training for the first few years of life. Most young dogs need plenty of exercise. Active dogs love having a job. Continued training keeps the dogs sharp and interested. I think of training as more of a lifestyle than something that ends.
Some dogs are very smart, active, and will take charge if the owner does not, so most dogs should be trained from 3 weeks old on. – Deer Creek Animal Hospital 1.
It depends on your puppy and you. How dedicated are you to being with your puppy round the clock? What is your strategy? With a solid crate training and watching regimen, you have the greatest chance of success. If you two are working together consistently and staying in a relatively confined space, your likelihood of efficient, successful training increases. In a crate, a dog can hold its bladder and bowels for its age in months + one (so, if your dog is three months old, it will likely, if well trained, be able to “make it” for four hours). With dedication and patience, the average puppy will likely be trained in 7-10 months. – Philly Unleashed 2.
Crate training can do a lot to teach young puppies their boundaries. It’s an essential part of housebreaking and taps into a canine’s instincts. Dogs prefer to have cosy “safe spaces” that they can retreat to when things get stressful. Because no animal wants to turn their relaxation spot into a den of filth, they will do their best to avoid accidents and destructive behaviour.
The key to proper crate training is to make it as comfortable and inviting as possible. Get creative and go all out! Add a nice bed, some cosy blankets, and fun toys. Anything that entices your dog to get inside is a big plus.
After gently introducing your pup, coax them in with some treats and positive language. Let them investigate on their own and encourage them to climb in when they see fit. You don’t want to force anything or dive head-first into hours of confinement. Build up to it!
Let your puppy spend some time in there with the door wide open. Then, try providing some meals and play toys with the door closed. Start with small 10-minute sessions alone before gradually increasing their crate time. Before long, your puppy should have no problem staying in a crate for several hours while you’re away.
The most important part of crate training is to keep it positive! Don’t turn the crate into a punishment zone, otherwise, your canine companion will never want to get in! Keep things light and introduce some verbal commands as they meander inside. You want to use positive reinforcement to ensure that your puppy feels good about entering and staying. Daily Dog Stuff 3.
So as long as your older dog has been well trained and has a solid bond with you, it can make training a puppy that much easier. Dogs are pack animals that instinctively pick up behaviours from other dogs in their pack, so a new puppy will learn a lot from the actions of your older dog. In this sense though, it can help to assess the current behaviours of your older dog thoroughly and address any necessary changes ahead of time. Just like older siblings teach younger children both good and bad habits, so too can dogs.
As well as the puppy naturally observing and mimicking your older dog in general, you can also proactively use your already trained dog to demonstrate behaviours and responses that you wish to teach your pup. When they see another dog being rewarded for positive behaviours, it can only increase their desire to follow suit.
It is also helpful to consider picking complementary breeds though. Matching a tiny, snappy dog with a large rambunctious dog and expecting harmony is a tall order, and whilst they may form a firm friendship, in the end, the likelihood of injury is high. It also typically helps to go for the opposite sex when bringing a new puppy into the mix. That said, your new dog will have its own personality and unique temperament, so it’s important not to expect to identically clone the responses of your older dog into the new addition. Give them time and consistent teaching and otherwise let them be themselves! Our Fit Pets 4.
Clever humans house train puppies remembering that they are dogs, and they are babies. House training is a human requirement, and not a dog’s natural behaviour. A new puppy needs help knowing where is “good to go” and where isn’t! So, we decide on their toilet place, use positive reinforcement and give them plenty of opportunities to visit that designated toilet area, wait with them whilst they go in the right place then party with them (including great snacks) when they do. Every two hours, plus after sleeping, drinking, playing, and eating are all good times to take them out if they toilet indoors YOU are getting it wrong and you need to be better! Clever humans don’t punish puppies, after all, we were in nappies for ages before we learned and if we consider that, even the slowest learning puppy is way quicker than we were. – Canine Principles 5.
The first thing to know about leash training a puppy is patience. You may be asking yourself how soon you can leash train your puppy. I’m a dog trainer, not a veterinarian so be sure to run health questions by your vet. From my experience, you can train an 8-week old puppy about the leash, but you must start off with the proper first step this is crucial. This is because most puppies will protest the new and strange feeling of the collar on their neck. To make it no biggie to the pup you need to teach leash pressure. This simply means conditioning the puppy that when it feels slight pressure to go with it, not against it. If this foundational training isn’t done you will get a puppy that puts the brakes on when it walks, alligator rolls at the end of the leash, or hops up and down. Most new puppy owners stop the leash pressure drill once the pup protests, but this is where the patience comes in. Relax, take a deep breath, bend down, sound inviting to the pup and give a treat once the dog comes towards you.
World of Dog Training
There are a few different kinds of training you’ll want to do with your new puppy. The first, and by far the most important, is socialising! Puppies’ brains are like sponges and they are learning all about their world. They are learning what is safe and what is unsafe. To ensure that our puppies grow up to be confident and joyful adults, we want our puppies to learn that people of all shapes and sizes are good news. Expose your puppy carefully, and with a lot of food rewards, to as many people as you can. You’ll also want your pup to learn that the sounds and sights of their new home and city are safe and predict threats.
You’ll also need to house train your puppy. Take them outside every few hours to start, giving them time to go. When they do, reward them with a nice treat to say “thanks for making the right call!”. When you’re inside, have your puppy either under your direct supervision, or contained in a puppy-proof space to prevent inside messes.
And finally, you’ll want your puppy to start to develop good chew-toy habits. Prevent access to anything that isn’t a chew toy, using either supervision or a puppy-proof pen in your home, and give them a nice supply of different chew toys to experiment with. Once you see what your pup likes, stock up! We want to develop good, strong chew toy habits before we start allowing our puppies more access to our homes. – Kristi Benson Dog Training 7.
Puppies younger than 12 weeks don’t have good control over their bladder and bowels. In fact, for the first few weeks, the mother licks her puppies to stimulate them to go to the bathroom. However, once your puppy is between 12 -16 weeks, they’re ready for housetraining, and you should start as soon as possible. Allowing puppies to become comfortable with eliminating in a cage/ house will make potty training challenging. – Dog Vills 8.
Puppies bite for many reasons. One is too much pent-up energy. Puppies need lots of exercise. Make sure your puppy gets the proper amount of physical and mental exercise. - Tether Tug 9.
If you had to look at dog breeds and their effect on training, on the whole, the simple answer would be no. Puppy training methods have been crafted for dogs in general, regardless of size, breed, or temperament. However, with that being said, different breeds have varying tendencies, which make some dogs easier to train than others, so it’s important to keep this in mind.
So it’s day 1: it’s just you and your puppy’s first day in your home. The first thing you should teach your pup is all good things come from his new human family members! These good things are food and praise! So make sure you feed them from your hands and not the bowl! Make sure you show them love in your tone of voice, pleasant petting, and touching! Now you’re off to a great start! - USK9 11.
Puppy proof your house by removing all tempting chew objects such as wires, shoes and paper objects from reachable areas, as well as any dangerous objects, such as glass or metal. Also, having an appropriate sized kennel/crate can provide a great foundation for potty training, preventing bad behaviours and providing a comfortable safe place for your puppy to relax and stay under control. Start good habits early! KC Dawgz 12.
A blind dog is very trainable. There are definitely more challenges when senses are impaired but a blind dog’s smell and hearing are going to be key to training. Dogs need consistency and repetition to understand.
I personally would use treats or a clicker for reward, voice commands (very clear simple words), and physical touch to show him/her the desired action until the dog understands the commends you are training. I would always use a leash when in public. - Pheasant Bonanza 13.
When I’m home and available, I set my timer and I take my dog to the correct potty spot on a regular schedule to ensure that she is in the right place when the need presents itself. I want to be present for as close to 100% as possible of all potties that occur, so that I can praise and reward my dog for going in the right place. This way she will learn that it’s safe and rewarding to potty in front of me and won’t feel a need to sneak off and go in my closet when I’m not looking.
If you work out of the house all day and can’t be home every few hours to take your pup potty, there are options. One option is to hire a dog walker who can stop by 2-3 times per day to take your dog for a brief potty walk. Maybe a retired neighbour would be interested in walking your pup mid-day.
Doggie daycares are great options for many dogs, especially those who are naturally social and enjoy spending time with other dogs. If these options aren’t available to you, or at least not options for every day, then this is my favourite solution. It includes creating a space in the house that provides the dog a safe space to rest and play, have access to water and toys, and also an acceptable area on which the dog can potty without undermining the overall potty training process. Easy, right?
After a week or so, you’ll find that your dog chooses an area far from the bed as their go-to potty spot in this confined area. After a week or so, you can make a little space (about 150mm) between the bed and the nearest potty pad, so now there are about 150mm of the floor exposed. Every few days as the dog shows consistency, you can expose a little more floor between the bed and the potty pads until you’re down to just 2 pads at the far side of the ex-pen.
First and foremost, recognise that your deaf puppy or dog is a very capable learner. The obvious difference is that you have to get your dog’s attention, i.e., get them to look at you in other ways as you cannot just throw your voice around.
With that in mind, as with hearing abled dogs, teaching basic obedience such as sit, down, stand, stay and come with visual cues (aka, hand signals) is a good place to start. With your awareness of what your dog is willing to work for and an understanding and use of non-confrontational body language, training your deaf dog flows from there! - The Cooperative Dog 15.
Surprisingly, it is not difficult to train dogs with disabilities. Dogs are excellent at adapting to situations and appear not to be bothered by their disabilities.
The difficulty arises in being able to “think outside the box” about how to train these dogs. A blind dog still has its sense of smell and sound as well as touch. You can use traditional training methods to teach commands, but using unique aromas can work to help this dog with its environment. By placing a few drops of essence, you can “show” the dog the difference between the front door and back door, what rooms it can and cannot go into, as well as where its toys are all can improve the dog’s life.
Very seldom are blind dogs taught to be off-leash, since they have a diminished reaction time. A deaf dog can learn hand signals for commands and feel you stomp on the floor to get its attention. I have found it much easier to train deaf dogs since they seldom react to distractions around them, allowing them to concentrate more on training than on their environment.
Many times deaf dogs are trained using a stimulation collar and a morse code type signal for commands, including recall. Here again, these dogs should not be allowed outside independently due to reaction time to dangerous situations.
Knowing what the dog’s disabilities are will determine what training method to use to teach them. Then modifying how you go about training them provides them with a communication line toward achieving the results wanted. – Laura Pakis, Certified Professional Dog Trainer and Cynologist at Acme Canine 16.
A puppy should drink the same amount of water during potty training as during any other time in their life; however much they want.
Puppies, like all life forms, need water to survive and be healthy and they are very good at knowing how much water they need to drink. However, if you are using a crate to potty train your pup, which is by far the easiest way, then you should keep track of how much water your pup drinks and when, as well as how much your pup pees and when. If your pup drinks a great deal of water right before they go into their crate, and it’s been some time since your pup has gone pee, they will need a trip to their potty sooner than if they haven’t had much water lately or recently went pee. Dunbar Academy 17.
When finding the best fit for an older client, we take many things into consideration. A calmer German Shepherd can be an excellent companion, along with Golden Retrievers, Labradors, Standard Poodles, just to name a few. -Taylor Made Working Dogs 18.
There are many stereotypes when it comes to breeds in general. Many of these stereotypes do not apply to the individual dog’s personality and temperament. The considerations that may apply to breed are the size of the dog when fully grown and the typical energy level of that breed. What was that dog bred to do? There are some things we cannot/should not expect to change when it comes to genetics: For example, herding dogs are likely to herd the children. There are many breeds to consider in a home with children.
All dogs are capable of training but some breeds are more likely to do well. Within those breeds, each dog should be considered as an individual. I caution parents when choosing a dog based on breed alone. Animal Manners 19.
• Please note that all puppy/dog owners should be reminded never to leave their puppy and/or dog alone and unattended (no matter what breed) with very young children.
No specific time is necessary. It can be at any moment of the day or broken up throughout the day. Short and fun sessions are the best! It is best to incorporate behaviours learned into everyday life to get your dog to generalise the behaviours. - PetSuites of America 20.
The best environment in which to train your puppy depends a lot on his or her temperament. Group classes can be a valuable piece of your pup’s socialisation process but how much actual training can you expect to be done? Very shy puppies often get overwhelmed and can go into shut-down mode, while overly gregarious and rambunctious types may become over-excited and have difficulty controlling their impulses. Training your puppy individually has the advantage of allowing her to work in an environment without too many distractions that could sabotage your results and cause both of you to feel frustrated. You also get the added benefit of the trainer’s undivided attention.
ever route you choose it’s very important to know that behaviourists and modern trainers believe that proper socialisation (meaning appropriate for your puppy’s personality one size does not fit all) and establishing a relationship based on trust and love (as opposed to force and dominance) are the top priorities for very young puppies between the ages of 8-16 weeks to reach their potential, as well-adjusted adult dogs. Of course, we want to teach them basic obedience commands but always remember that there’s a reason it’s called puppy kindergarten and not puppy college. - The Trained Canine 21.

Histiocytic sarcoma (HS) is an uncommon but aggressive cancer of dogs.
Histiocytes are a type of white blood cell that reside within the tissues of almost every organ in the body and are an important part of the immune system. They help get rid of invading pathogens and stimulate other cells of the immune system.
Histiocytic sarcomas develop when these specialised white blood cells begin dividing uncontrollably. Because white blood cells are found in many different tissues, HS can arise almost anywhere and spread quickly.
Histiocytic sarcoma was first described in Bernese Mountain Dogs in the late 1970s, but it has now been noted in other breeds including:
• Flat Coated Retrievers
• Miniature Schnauzers
• Rottweilers
• Labrador Retrievers
• Pembroke Welsh Corgis
• Golden Retrievers
Histiocytic sarcoma is more common in middle aged and older dogs, although there are reports of the disease in dogs as young as 3 years old. Males and females are affected equally.
Unfortunately, the most common signs of HS are similar to many other diseases and include:
• Lethargy
• Poor appetite
• Swelling and lameness (in cases of bone or joint involvement)
• Coughing
• Breathing difficulty
• Vomiting
• Diarrhoea
Diagnosis usually is made based on a combination of clinical signs, bloodwork results, and biopsy or a fine needle aspirate of abnormal tissue. Additional tests, such as ultrasound or X-ray, often are used as adjunctive diagnostic tests and as a means of assessing the extent of disease.
Histiocytic sarcoma can take many forms, and clinical signs and prognosis vary with different subtypes. Three recognised subtypes are: localised, disseminated and hemophagocytic:
• Localised HS is confined to one organ and usually is treated with surgery followed by chemotherapy. In many cases, patients can live more than one year (and occasionally longer), depending on the success of the surgery.
• Disseminated HS affects many different organs. Chemotherapy can be used to slow progression of disease, but prognosis is poor with most patients only living a few months.
• Hemophagocytic HS is the most aggressive subtype. No effective treatments exist and survival times are only one to two months.
There is evidence a genetic component may play a role in HS. The only other risk factors identified to date are a history of orthopedic disease and inflammation when HS is localised to a joint.
The Golden Retriever Lifetime Study is carefully tracking all cancers reported in the Morris Animal Foundation’s Study participants, including histiocytic sarcoma. In fact, they’ve added HS to the primary endpoint cancers in the Study (osteosarcoma, hemangiosarcoma, lymphoma and mast cell tumor), due to a higher level of occurrence than originally expected at the outset of the Study.
As of June 2021, Morris Animal Foundation recorded 20 cases of histiocytic sarcoma in their cohort of dogs. The Study team is monitoring all of their cancer cases, including histiocytic sarcoma, as a first step toward looking for risk factors associated with the development of this terrible cancer.
The Morris Animal Foundation are advancing diagnostics, treatments and cures to improve and to give hope to dogs and their people affected by this aggressive, and poorly understood, cancer.
The Golden Retriever Lifetime Study is one of the largest, most comprehensive prospective canine health studies in the United States. The Study’s purpose is to identify the nutritional, environmental, lifestyle and genetic risk factors for cancer and other diseases in dogs. Each year, with the help of veterinarians and dog owners, the Foundation collects health, environmental and behavioral data on 3,000+ enrolled Golden Retrievers.
The Study will help identify nutritional, genetic and environmental risk factors for cancer and other important diseases in dogs. Results will provide comprehensive data on diseases and other health challenges, including cancer. Findings will be used as a launching point for multiple health studies in dogs.
