The renewal of the fences is still awaiting the final sign off from the powers that be, so that the work can commence. It is a very convoluted path apparently, this department hands off to requisitions, however, despite all this, we are told it is very close to happening. Similarly, we are awaiting final figures for our lease arrangements. The (reduced) site has finally been valued and we await the final figure that will become the annual lease. Again, as soon as we know more, you will be informed.
With the current mouse plague, there are suggestions the mice numbers may be heading towards the more heavily populated areas. With the newer drugs that have been released by the Government to counter the plague in agricultural areas, you must be extremely careful, as you should with any rodenticide. These new ones act so fast that one feed is sufficient to kill. Unfortunately, one feed of a dead mouse travels this drug up the food chain. Birds, dogs, cats, etc will die very rapidly from eating mice or rats killed by these extremely toxic drugs.
Even with the older conventional warfarin (and 2nd generation warfarin) type products, there are large numbers of dogs being treated in country practices, having ingested mice killed by these products. These drugs cause internal bleeding within a few days. Very pale gums, coughing and bringing up blood, reluctance to move around can all be symptoms of poisoning. At least with these older products, the dogs usually live long enough to at least reach the veterinary hospital for treatment, which consists of vitamin K1 (specific antidote) and blood transfusions. If there are increased mice and/or rat numbers in your area, I would consider getting your dogs vaccinated for Leptospirosis. This is done by giving 2 vaccinations of the C2i vaccine 2-4 weeks apart.
Many people are confused about what is required and, in some cases, are under vaccinating which can leave your dogs open to infection and serious disease. Equally, you do not wish to over vaccinate your dogs, especially the older ones. The DOGS NSW website has a copy of the recommended vaccination protocols under the Code of Ethics. This explains what “core” and “non-core” vaccines are and the normal schedules that should be used. Core vaccines are essential for average situations, non-core are used for specific situations or when under threat such as the Leptospirosis vaccine during a mouse plague. If you wish to look at the reasoning behind these schedules more closely you can go to WASAVA Vaccination Guidelines which gives an excellent outline and more understanding as to the reasoning behind the schedules.
The Jack Russell Terrier survey has finally come out: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/6SNPY82 I strongly urge any person who owns a Jack Russell Terrier to vote in the positive for the change, which will bring us into line with other Jack Russell breed standards worldwide. It is a very small change in the wording which will correct the proportions in regards to length of body in the breed.

The 2021 Sydney Royal Easter Show coverage features in this edition and, after last year’s absence, it is wonderful that the event was able to proceed this year. Despite the fact that there were no international judges, our local judges did a tremendous job and entries were of an exceptional standard. The feature is located in the second half of the magazine, commencing on page 18.
The Sydney Dog Lovers Show is yet another event which was affected by COVID-19 in 2020, however, the show will be going ahead next month with DOGS NSW in attendance with their Information stand, Ask-the-Breeder talks, along with many of our affiliated Breed Clubs and their wonderful dogs. Please turn to page 8 for what to expect at this jam-packed, fun event. The Show will be held at Sydney Showground, Sydney Olympic Park on Saturday and Sunday 7 and 8 August.

Finally, this month’s breed spotlight is the Sealyham Terrier; a happy, friendly and outgoing breed, with a loyal, clownish, loving personality. Sealies (as they are affectionately known) were very popular in the 1920s and 1930s and they had some old school Hollywood celebrity owners, such as Cary Grant, Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, Gary Cooper, Bette Davis, Humphrey Bogart and Alfred Hitchcock.
Alfred Hitchcock had his Sealyham Terriers appear in his films. In his film ‘Suspicion’ in 1941, one of his Sealyhams made an appearance and in his 1963 movie ‘The Birds’, his two Sealyham Terriers, Geoffrey and Stanley, were also appeared with him. It was a cameo appearance in the beginning of the
movie where Hitchcock is seen walking the two Sealyhams out of a shop as lead actress, Tippi Hedren walks in. See pictured below. Hitchcock is also said to have had a third Sealyham that went by the name of Mr. Jenkins. See Alfred Hitchcock pictured above with two of his Sealyham Terriers.

Australia’s favourite fur-festival makes a triumphant return to Sydney Olympic Park this August with more than 800 dogs representing over 120 breeds The team behind the Dog Lovers Show has revived and re-invigorated its iconic program to celebrate the seventh Sydney festival, marking a huge milestone on the national event calendar.
After an extremely challenging year, CEO of Event Management International and Show Founder, Jason Humphris, says the Show’s return is an important step forward in the recovery of the Australian event industry.

Using fluffy plush toys, budding vets can learn how to care for animals big and small in a mock clinic by SASH. Inside the new KIDS ZONE, presented by NSW Animal Welfare League, little ones can look like their favourite breed at the face painting station and families can snap memories at the new Glitter Selfie Wall .
Attendees will be spoiled for choice with hundreds of Australia’s best pet brands exhibiting new products, services and dog tech with exclusive Show deals. An array of Sydney’s best bites will fill the outdoor food truck area
With the safety and wellbeing of visitors the utmost priority, the organisers have worked closely with the venue to establish a NSW government approved Covid-Safe Plan.
Head vet Sean McCormack, from tails.com says “As lockdown begins to ease, your pooch may have missed out on some of the usual socialisation during the last year, so being around other dogs and people can be scary and could lead to aggressive behaviours. However, even the most well-trained and socialised dogs can be aggressive if they feel threatened, trapped and afraid.”
“The first step to take would be recognising when your dog is feeling either stressed or anxious, then take some time to help train your pooch to avoid and prevent any incidents.”
Dog anxiety is usually caused by triggers in their environment. It stems from fear of the unknown, so if your dog wasn’t well socialised as a young puppy, they can develop stress and anxiety around new encounters like people, animals, new places and even objects around the home.
Our dogs rely on body language and behaviour to communicate with us, so keep an eye out for some of the more common behaviours a stressed or anxious dog might display.

• Restless or at high alert
• Destructive behaviour
• Loss of appetite
• Shaking, cowering or hiding
• Panting
• Growling or baring teeth
• Biting or snapping
• Barking or howling
• Unwillingness to interact
If these behaviours are frequent and ongoing, it’s important to speak to a vet or behaviourist to help you identify the source of your dog’s anxiety.
We encourage gradual socialising for your dog, especially if your pooch is a rescue dog. Dogs with a history of abuse may have unpredictable triggers, and you could seek expert help from a behaviourist for specific advice. Dogs that are familiar with other dogs and people are less likely to be aggressive.
A very effective way to de-escalate a stressful situation, where your dog could become aggressive, is dog training. It all comes down to building up a trained-based bond with your dog. They are more likely to trust you and respond to recall commands. Training can also help you identify your dog’s moods, behaviour and triggers.
Using a lead is essential when you and your dog are in a new or unfamiliar situation, e.g. a busy park. This will make it easier to control your dog, but can also be useful evidence that you have taken the precautions necessary to prevent an incident, should one occur.
As mentioned earlier in reward based-training, you should be more aware of your four-legged friend’s mood and triggers. Be cautious of other dogs and people around you. If you recognise your dog’s triggers, try your best to avoid them.
Be aware of your surroundings and how it is affecting your pooch. If you notice signs of stress or aggression from your dog, warn people who may approach you and remove your dog from the environment or situation.
The breed was developed between 1850 and 1891 by Captain John Edwardes at Sealyham House, near Wolfscastle in the Welsh county of Pembrokeshire. Originally the breed was used for pest control, to hunt small game and to eliminate vermin, particularly badgers, which he usually relocated. The Welsh Corgi, Fox Terrier (Wire), and the now extinct English White Terrier all played a part in the makeup of the Sealyham, although Edwardes did not keep records. He wanted a small, white dog with a strong jaw and a wiry coat. The white coat was particularly prized, as it meant that the hunter in the field could distinguish the dogs from the quarry. 1.
Sealyham Terriers have a white double coat which requires regular brushing with a wire comb in order to prevent matting. It has a dense undercoat, while the outer coat is wiry and weather resistant. Markings on the face can be in a variety of colours including lemon, black, brown, blue, and badger, which is a mix of brown and black. Heavy body markings or patches or excessive ticking on the coat are discouraged Sealyhams are low to the ground and in muddy weather their long coats can become quite dirty. Sealyham coats are groomed by hand stripping, in order to keep the coat from becoming too soft. 1.
Sizes: Ideal weight: Dogs approx. 9 kgs (20 lbs). Bitches approx. 8 kgs (18 lbs). Height: should not exceed 31 cms (12 ins) at shoulder. 2.
Although happy in the company of others, they are fine if left alone. Sealyham Terriers are suited for both the town and country. They can be stubborn, vocal, and boisterous but also full of personality. While they make for loyal family companions, they can be trained to be working dogs, making them excellent mousers or ratters. They can also be taught as a puppy to get along with other animals, including cats and birds. 1.
‘The long, profuse, double, weather resisting coat needs regular combing right down to the skin. The coat on the back can be stripped or clipped, and grooming must be done on a regular basis.’
‘If your Sealyham Terrier becomes overweight, he can develop back problems. Be sure to monitor his food intake and give him regular exercise to keep him in shape.’
‘Sealyhams have a wonderful sense of humour and are always ready to play. Because they were bred to hunt in a pack, they typically get along well with other dogs in the home, as well as people. Although loyal and affectionate with their families, Sealyham Terriers can be a bit reserved around strangers and therefore make good watchdogs. Their bark is surprisingly loud and deep, but they can be trained to be quiet on command. They are fond of chasing rabbits, birds, and even other dogs and cats. Be sure to keep your Sealyham Terrier on leash when he’s not in a secure area.’
‘Although Sealyham Terriers do well outdoors when it’s cool (they don’t like heat), they should be kept in your house when you can’t supervise them.’
‘Sealyham Terriers are happy little dogs, but they can have a dominant personality if not kept in check by a firm, consistent master. Successfully training them requires firm, consistent handling. They respond well to positive reinforcement techniques such as food rewards, praise and play. All Terriers are rambunctious, even the laidback Sealyham. This breed is best suited to families with older children who understand how to handle and interact with dogs. Sealies are generally good with other pets, including cats, especially if they’re raised with them, however, they can be aggressive toward dogs they don’t know.’ 3.

The Competition and Consumer Act came into force
The beautiful dogs you will see within these pages come with a long history: many breeds originated hundreds of years ago, some even thousands. These breeds evolved not only to protect families and their other animals, they helped humans survived by hunting the food they needed to stay alive.

At its recent meeting, the Board of Directors resolved to amend DOGS NSW Regulations Part XIII-Code of Ethics, in particular the following Clauses:-

A bitch shall not be bred from unless it is in good health and has reached adequate maturity and, in any case, no matings shall be permitted before the age of 18 months for bitches of Breeds specified in the Schedule of Adequate Maturity for Giant and Large Breeds below or before the age of 12 months for any other bitch breed Any litter resulting from the mating of a bitch under the minimum specified age at the time of mating is only eligible to be registered on the Limited Register and flagged “not to be upgraded to the Main Register”. Members are reminded that, in accordance with DOGS NSW Regulations Part II-Show, Clause 12.7, which reads as follows:-
12.17 (a) If a dog has been in a kennel affected with distemper, canine hepatitis, parvovirus or any other virulent contagious disease, it shall not enter a showground or remain on a showground for a period of three months after the date of the first diagnosis. (10/18)
(b) If a dog has been in a kennel affected with or diagnosed with kennel cough, it shall not enter a showground or remain on a showground for a period of three weeks after the date of the first diagnosis. (10/18)
Any dogs displaying symptoms of illness or a communicable disease, in particular Kennel Cough, are not allowed to enter or remain on a showground.

Celtic dogs will be judged in alphabetical order in their group. If the BIG or RUBIG is not a Celtic Breed then best Celtic will be judged by the group Judge after Group Specials. This also applies to Celtic Puppy of group.
Celtic Specials All BIG Celtic and RUBIG Celtic will be judged by the General Specials Judge. If the Best in Show is a Celtic Breed, the BIG Celtic winners will still be judged for RUBIS Celtic. If the BIS is a Celtic puppy then this will be the Best Celtic Puppy in Show.

On the 3rd December 2020, the 2021 Sydney Royal Easter Show was officially given the approval to proceed after the 2020 Sydney Royal Easter Show was cancelled, due to the COVID 19 Global Pandemic.
The Sydney Royal Easter Show was set to be the biggest event in the world to go ahead since the start of the pandemic.
Sydney Royal drew an entry of just over 2000 across all dog competitions, including Conformation, Obedience, Agility, Sweepstakes and Handlers. This was a great outcome considering the uncertainty of the current times. The quality of exhibits entered received much praise from the fantastic panel of Judges (pictured middle right)
We received many positive comments referring to Sydney Royal Stewards and it is their professional approach to the Show which ensures the Show’s success. Edward ‘Ted’ Pickering was awarded the most prestigious of awards for the Sydney Royal Easter Show, being the 2021 Sydney Royal Show Legend. Ted has been an active member of the Sydney Royal official panel for over 30 years. His humour and fun personality makes everyone smile. We thank Ted for his ongoing service and look forward to him continuing with us for years to come. Please see the photo of Ted (right) taken by Kerry Afford, giving his acceptance speech.
The office staff worked tirelessly to ensure the days flowed without a hitch. This was appreciated by exhibitors and vendors. Rebecca, Hannah, Katrina and Felicity, along with the Pavilion staff, were integral in making the show a success.
The 2021 RAS Canine Hero Awards, sponsored by the Australasian Animal Registry, were presented on Best in Show day. The AAR Service Dog Award was presented to Ryan Tate and English Springer Spaniel ‘Taylor’ and The AAR Companion Award was presented to Labrador Retriever ‘Maple’ owned by Sandra Merhi. Congratulations to them both.

Having lost not only the Royal but most of 2020 to the dreaded COVID -19 pandemic, it was very exciting to be back at Homebush once again. The Sydney Royal Obedience Trial lets the general public see what can be achieved by building a relationship with your dog through obedience training and to watch excellence in a top level competition. The trial was held on the first day of competition, Thursday 1st April 2021, on the dog lawns at the Howie Pavilion, commencing early morning at 8.30am in two rings. Mrs Dawn Ayton from Victoria judged Best in Trial, the UDX and Open classes and our own Mrs Sue Fedoryschan judged the UD and Novice classes.
We had two rings in 2019, but each trial is a little different. The RAS moved onto digital recording of results on an Ipad, which worked quite well, and a step forward in process management. Our team of stewards Louise Patterson, Maryanne Fazekas, Kathie Minton, Dori Leadle, Sandra Gluck, Judith Walder, Marilyn McMahon and Lyn Mansfield ensured that the trial finished in good time for the Breed classes to commence after lunch. Though we suffered, like the whole show, with a reduced entry we still had the top dogs and triallers competing on the day.
As always, Open was the largest class and, of the four dogs aiming for a qualifying score in the group exercises, three were successful. Winner of the Open Class for the third trial running was O.CH.RO.CH.FS.CH.HTM.CH. Nahrof Zypperty CDX, UD on a score of 198 points, owned and handled by Penny Dalzell. In 2nd place was O.CH. RO.CH. PRANKSTA LADY MIA RAE. ET. UDX. owned by Mandy Choice on 192 points and in 3rd place was Henke Plancke with DUAL CH (O) Rowenglen Locki UD on 181 points.
Following breed judging Henke also received a 4th Goldstein Gold Medallion for ‘Loki,’ bringing Henke’s total medallion count since 1982 to 12: 7 Gold, 3 Silver and 2 Bronze Medallions. Conditions at the Royal are often quite challenging, with amusement rides, announcements and general public always moving around. Those that have trust in their dog are, more often than not, rewarded with a good result. Handlers were given the opportunity to complete all exercises and presentations of prizes took place at the conclusion of each class. The support, by way of prizes, donated by various dog obedience clubs, was much appreciated and a recognition that competing at the Sydney Royal is still highly regarded.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, it was only a few days before General Specials Day that the go ahead was received for the presentation of the Goldstein Medallion and Best in Trial to take place in front of a packed public and ‘canine’ gallery. Penny Dalzell and ‘Zypperty’ gave an outstanding free routine for the audience, including heeling, directed retrieve, distance control and recall. A very comprehensive and smooth performance in a noisy and challenging space. Henke followed up with ‘Loki’ enthusiastically performing an obedience routine and finishing with a conformation ‘round the ring,’ representing both aspects of qualifying for the Jack Goldstein Medallion.

Firstly, thanks to Mr Bruce Havord (Jumping Classes) and Mrs Lucy Williams (Agility Classes) for officiating. Courses were smooth, fun, challenging (WOW), but perfect for the conditions and grounds that we run on. I wish more competitors would have entered just to experience the courses.
