We should be cheerful at how well we have all weathered the pandemic, with the vast majority of our population staying safe and healthy. While we are doing so well, spare a thought for all our overseas fellow enthusiasts, where, in most countries they are still in lockdown, or at best, have very limited movement. Australia and New Zealand have done extremely well to control the pandemic and are now reaping the benefits.
The State Borders are opening and this will enable much freer movement of people, dogs (and Judges) between states. Up until this time, movement of dogs between states has been extremely limited, and getting semen transported and bitches mated has been problematic. Puppies have been moving reasonably well with the limited flights, but that is usually a one way trip.
Shows and Trials are being held successfully and our members are being very responsible with social distancing and other restrictions. Clubs are continuing to assist with ongoing puppy socialisation as well as Obedience and Show Training.
I cannot emphasise how important it is that we continue to work with this generation of puppies, that has had limited exposure to normal conditions during their early days. While most are getting pretty good in public, there are still some that are very fearful of close contact with strangers and different situations.
The Royal NSW Health & Welfare Charity Limited is now set up to assist with disasters and other emergencies with pens and funds (to be used carefully). So far there have been limited needs placed on all the welfare charities, due to the huge uptake of dogs, cats and other pets during the lockdowns. The concern many in the welfare sector have, is that there may be an upsurge of abandonments once we all return to work.
While many people hope to move around during the Christmas period, movement will probably be limited and hopefully pets will not be left unattended.
The next Charity Show will be held in July next year with another Auction. Regifting unwanted Christmas presents (and other items) to the Charity Auction will all be gratefully received.

2020 will go down as a very sad year indeed, due to the COVID pandemic, both with the loss of lives and the impact lockdown restrictions has had on many Australians, both with lifestyle changes and economically.
As restrictions ease, it makes us appreciate our way of life and how lucky we are to live in a sensible country whose government acted quickly to combat further outbreaks.
It is therefore, heartwarming, that in this month’s edition we can cover the first show results since the COVID crisis emerged, for ‘DOGS NSW Indoor Arena Fundraising Championship Show’, held on 27 September. There was a wonderful display of support for this show, where the dog community banded together to show that the future of dog showing is still positive, with everyone on the day doing their best to produce the efficient running of the event under COVID guidelines. Coverage of the event commences on page 10.
This edition concentrates on a number of veterinary articles: from the Morris Animal Foundation’s report of a little known but deadly disease, ‘Immune Mediated Anemia’ and their research into combating it, to Veterinary Sports Medicine Specialist, Chris Zink DVM PhD DACVSMR, who discusses the anatomy, functions and arguments for the keeping and removal of dewclaws. Both articles are very informative, with the former commencing on page 15, the latter on page 22.
In addition, we are running a series of Canine First Aid articles over the next few months, written by Joanne Bibby, who developed the Fursafe Emergency Dog First Aid Kit and Guide. The first in the series discusses Paw Injuries, the anatomy, trauma and conditions, safety precautions, signs and symptoms and the correct action to take before taking your canine friend to the vet. The articles are extractions from Joanne’s Emergency Dog First Aid guide and this issue’s article commences on page 24.
This month’s breed feature is the Finnish Lapphund, a beautiful, friendly breed with an incredible joyful nature. They are friendly with strangers and are a soft and gentle breed, good with children, elderly and disabled. They are suitable for individuals and families who want to involve their dog in their life and activities and who are committed to weekly, thorough grooming and regular, consistent training.
As Christmas is nearly upon us, I would like to wish our members a very Happy Christmas! Here’s to a New Year that will bring us all a more normal way of life, a much anticipated vaccine to combat any further COVID outbreaks and the return of more shows!
Winners of the ‘Eukanuba’ competition were Louise Bennett and Paula Gray.
Winners of the ‘How to love and survive your teenage dog’ book competition in October’s magazine were: Veronica Sewell, Veronica Collins Smith and Margaretha Coetzer.
The DOGS NSW Board of Directors and Staff would like to wish all Members and their families a very Merry Christmas and a Happy, Safe New Year.

Many members may have recently read about the German Government’s plans to legislate mandatory exercising of their residents’ dogs. News headlines across the media were expressing dismay at a law being implemented, requiring dogs to be exercised daily. Reports varied on the details of the exercise regime, but in essence it will call for dogs to be exercised on a lead twice daily for at least an hour in total. The ‘Exercise’ headline drew a lot of comment, as it is quite logical that such a blanket law without consideration of the health and environment of the dogs, could possibly lead to detrimental outcomes for some. We know it is never advisable to exercise our dogs when they are either unwell or if the weather is extreme, but it appears no consideration has been given to these important factors in the drafting of the proposed new law.
Most, if not all of our members, would be well aware that exercise is already written into DOGS NSW Regulations and the Animal Welfare Code of Practice for Breeding Dogs and Cats, however, as a reminder, our dogs should be allowed a minimum of 30 minutes free exercise twice a day, OR 15 minutes minimum lead walking twice a day, under DOGS NSW Regulations Part 14 Clause 10.2.
To refresh your memory and to further understand the DOGS NSW exercise guidelines, please see link: https://www.dogsnsw.org.au/media/1734/part-14-guide-for-care-mgmt-july-18.pdf. We have given due consideration to factors that will impact the safe exercising of our dogs.
As with ourselves, exercise has many benefits that help with enrichment and that also extends to our dogs. Dogs with high energy benefit from being exercised regularly to help prevent bad habits like nuisance barking, hole digging, destruction of property, etc that comes around from boredom. Certainly some dogs require less exercise than others but unless there is a veterinary diagnosis for nil, or very little exercise, all dogs should have some form of exercise daily. It is also very fortunate that NSW has managed Covid-19 very well and mostly has not adversely affected our ability to go out and exercise our dogs.
With the warmer weather coming upon us very quickly and the harsh heat in Australia, exercise should be limited to the cooler parts of the day to prevent heat stress, which can escalate to a serious situation rapidly.

For Suzan Koleda and her husband Peter, their West Highland Terriers are more than just dogs. They consider the two of them, Bonnie and Chloe, their “fur children” and treat them with the same importance. The couple are now reaching a time in life where they are starting to think about the future; about all those uncertainties that tend to accompany getting older. What will happen to their home? Their belongings? Their dogs? “My biggest fear is that if something happens to us, our dogs won’t be looked after in the way that they are used to,” Suzan told RSPCA NSW. In order to dispel that worry, Suzan decided to sign up for the RSPCA NSW Home Ever After (HEA) program.
The program serves to rehome the pets of people who have passed away, either prematurely or from old age, become permanently physically incapacitated, or have had to relocate into a non-pet friendly care home.
The first important part of the HEA process is collecting crucial information about each pet, creating a pet profile. “Our team endeavours to learn everything there is to know, including such things as favourite toys, preferred foods, sleeping habits, vet history, whether they like to be scratched behind the ear…. all the things only a doting pet owner would know after years of love and care”, Home Ever After Coordinator, Lisa Gledhill explained. Enrollees in the program are provided with resources, such as wallet card and fridge magnet, so emergency services would know who to call, plus a letter for the estate executor providing instructions on the pets’ long-term care.
In the event that the pet does need to be taken into our care, RSPCA is notified, and the pet is collected and assessed for any medical needs. They are then rehomed with an appropriately matched family, using all the information provided by the owner, ensuring the pets retain all the things they are accustomed to. The Home Ever After team also keeps in touch with the adoptive family to make sure everything is running smoothly.
“When owners enrol their pets in the program, they are safeguarding their future by creating their next forever home with the knowledge of the person who knows them best,” Home Ever After Coordinator Lisa Gledhill said. “The Program may never be needed but it’s so important to have a plan and be prepared just in case it ever is.”
The HEA program can also help reopen a door once considered closed by many senior pet lovers. With HEA now as a future care plan option to consider, the possibility of bringing a pet back into a senior pet lovers’ home is a reality. As the pet owning community already knows, there are multiple studies which show there are an array of health benefits associated with owning a pet, especially later in life. These include reducing loneliness through increased sociability, reducing stress, lowering blood pressure and cholesterol, and lowering the risk of heart attacks. Owning a pet also gives people a purpose and routine something that can fade in our senior years. RSPCA NSW even finds it helps to increase senior pet adoptions when we match seniors with seniors.
RSPCA NSW does not ask for payment for this service, but respectfully requests that enrollees leave a Gift in their Will instead. These future gifts will ensure that RSPCA NSW can continue offering community programs to pet owners in need, plus provide vital care and much needed assistance to vulnerable animals across the state.
If you’ve ever asked yourself the question, “If something happens to me, what will happen to my pet?”, the RSPCA Home Ever After program is able to provide an answer.
For more information on the program, see www.rspcansw.org/hea-dogsnsw or call 02 9782 4419.
After a long hiatus from shows, due to COVID 19 restrictions, the events calendar in NSW resumed with much enthusiasm. With an entry approaching a thousand dogs, unprecedented in recent times for local judges, it was wonderful to see the beaming smiles on so many DOGS NSW members as they came through the gates to attend their first dog show in nigh on six months. This wonderful show of support has been a shot in the arm and proof positive that the future of dog showing in NSW is still bright and positive.
Exhibitors arrived to find the grounds in magnificent condition, amenities recently upgraded and painted, along with new undercover canopies located at all rings. The Ground Staff, Chris, Dave and Matt, worked tirelessly, both in the weeks leading up to the show and on the day, to ensure that the members enjoyed the best possible experience. Thank you to Director Peter Cutler and his Grounds Committee for assisting in bringing all these upgrades to fruition. The planning and scheduling of Judges, endorsed by the Board of Directors, largely proved to be positive, with very few problems arising on the day.
Firstly, thank you to the exhibitors and handlers, who abided by directions and on the whole did a very good job of following the physical distancing guidelines.
Thank you to all the Judges, each and every one of whom gave freely of their time, working extremely hard to get through the judging of this magnificent entry and to have Group winners entering Ring 1 at 4pm for the judging of Best In Show!
Thank you to Director Nancy Keck and Debbie Meagher for their efficient running of the office, producing a continual stream of challenge certificates that were gratefully received by the members. The recent purchase of a golf cart proved to be invaluable in getting to all the rings, including those on the German Shepherd League area, in picking up slips and delivering certificates to ringside for exhibitors to collect. Affiliates will be able to hire the golf cart as well for a reasonable charge.
Thank you to the Stewards and COVID Marshals who came to assist and worked extremely hard feeding the exhibits through to the Judges and to the COVID Marshals, who ensured that those who had finished being judged, moved on in a timely fashion, to allow the next round of exhibitors onto the grounds. This was a very important function on the day, in considering the necessity to keeping the people on the ground at any one time under 500.
Thank you to Rob and Deb Habin, who kept tally of the people flowing through the gates and kept them moving in an efficient and timely fashion.
Last, but not least thank you to our Operations Manager Anthony Khamis, our Company Secretary Virginia Gagan-Wilson, our Committee Secretary Lisa Hadley and our Digital Specialist, Abby Davis, for giving up their time on a Sunday to assist me as Secretary of this event. I’m sure all members will join with me in acknowledging the commitment of our staff to providing optimum customer service to our members and particularly in this instance, above and beyond!
This event raised approximately $8,800 and is the first monies to go into the kitty to realise our long held dream of building an indoor show facility. Yes, we have a long way to go, but it certainly is a very positive start!

August 6, 2020 – Wiley was a tough, happy and mischievous beagle. She suffered from a seizure disorder, hypothyroidism and Addison’s disease, but with the help of her devoted owners Brenda and Keith, Wiley enjoyed an active, wonderful life.
However, when Brenda found Wiley lying outside one night, she had no idea that Wiley was about to begin a fight neither of them could win.
Early the next morning, Brenda and Keith got Wiley immediately to her veterinarian. After a few tests, Wiley was diagnosed with Immune-mediated hemolytic anemia (IMHA). Brenda and Keith had never heard of the disease before and the prognosis was grim. Despite beginning treatment, Wiley’s condition continued to deteriorate and Brenda and Keith had to make the heart-breaking decision to say goodbye.
“It’s like someone hit you in the gut with a baseball bat,” said Brenda. “With IMHA you have to act so quickly. There’s not much information out there about the disease.”
Immune-mediated hemolytic anemia occurs when the body suddenly perceives red blood cells as foreign invaders. The immune system attacks the red blood cells and destroys them much the same way, as if the cells were a virus or bacteria. The disease comes on quickly, with many dogs only having noticeable signs for one or two days at most. A sudden collapse like Wiley’s is a frequent finding.
Wiley and Brenda’s story is all too common for dogs with this disease. As red blood cell numbers plummet to dangerously low levels, all body systems are affected by a concurrent lack of oxygen, which is carried by red blood cells. Dogs with IMHA are prone to forming blood clots, which can lodge in any organ. The combination of blood clots and low red blood cell numbers tragically can result in organ failure and death.
IMHA can strike any dog, although some breeds have a higher predisposition to the disease than others. Breeds at higher risk include:
• Beagle
• Cocker spaniel
• Shih Tzu
• Bichon Frise
• Old English Sheepdog
• Collie
• Miniature Schnauzer
• Maltese
• Labrador Retriever
• Poodle
• Dachshund
• English Springer Spaniel
• Jack Russell Terrier
IMHA typically is a disease that affects middle-aged to older dogs, although it’s been reported in dogs as young as 1 year old.
Signs of immune-mediated hemolytic anemia are secondary to low red blood cell counts and can include:
• Pale gums
• Panting or laboured breathing
• Yellow colour to gums or whites of the eyes
• Sudden collapse or fatigue
• Anorexia
These signs tend to come on suddenly and are dramatic. Most owners quickly recognise that something is wrong and seek veterinary care.
Diagnosis is generally straightforward. Low red blood cell counts are the hallmark feature and other red blood cell abnormalities often are present.
Treatment is aimed at stopping the immune system from destroying red blood cells. Drugs that suppress the immune system, such as steroids, are a first line of treatment. Many dogs require blood transfusions to try to raise their red blood cell counts temporarily until the medications begin to quiet the immune system.
Because dogs with IMHA are at risk for abnormal blood clot formation, anticoagulant medications, commonly known as blood thinners, are recommended.
Almost all the therapies used have serious side effects, making treatment a lot like walking a tightrope. Unfortunately, IMHA has a high mortality rate, even in dogs that receive prompt treatment, with 50% to 70% of dogs dying of the disease in the first few weeks after diagnosis. In addition, there are reports that as many as 20% of dogs that recover from IMHA will relapse within the first year.
More effective therapies with fewer side effects are desperately needed to improve survival and quality of life for dogs with IMHA. A Morris Animal Foundation-funded team at Cornell University is currently enrolling dogs in a clinical trial testing a new treatment for IMHA. The team is using a targeted approach for suppressing the immune system that wouldn’t have the debilitating side effects of standard therapy. The Cornell team is focusing in on a particularly deadly subtype of IMHA known as intravascular IMHA. If successful, this treatment could be a breakthrough for dogs suffering from IMHA.
The Foundation understands that better treatment is needed for this terrible disease. That’s why in the last 20 years they’ve invested more than $1 million in 16 studies focused on novel treatments for IMHA.
The Morris Foundation’s work has helped veterinarians improve the care of dogs suffering from IMHA, but they have still got a long way to go.
Morris Animal Foundation is an animal health charity based in Colorado, United States. The Foundation advances veterinary medicine and funds veterinary research for companion animals, horses and wildlife.
The Morris Animal Foundation was established in 1948 and was built from royalties of one-half cent per can of food; money dedicated to science and research as a means to advance animal health. The founder was veterinarian Dr Mark Morris Snr.
Today, Morris Animal Foundation remains one of the largest and most highly respected animal health organisations in the world. Since its creation, the Foundation has invested more than $136 million toward 2,700+ studies that have led to significant breakthroughs in diagnostics, treatments, preventions and cures benefitting companion animals, horses, and wildlife worldwide.

A long life is considered a life well-lived, and the same goes for our four legged friends. In this heartfelt new collection from award-winning author Laura Greaves, we meet fifteen elderly dogs who, despite their age, are doing extraordinary things all around the world.
No matter how old they are, dogs improve our general wellbeing, keep us fit and active, boost our mental health and reduce our stress. Yet it’s all too common for senior dogs to be dumped at shelters or passed off to new homes once they reach a certain age; some of us see caring for an ailing or elderly dog as a burden rather than a reward. This collection aims to challenge this by showcasing the incredible lives of older dogs including:
• Haole (pictured below), who battled cancer, learned to surf and changed the lives of dozens of young children with disabilities at a surf therapy organisation.
• Maya, the conservation detection dog who sniffs out important koala habitat. Her work and talent paved the way to establish the team of dogs that were involved in koala recovery during the Australian Black Summer fires.
• Maggie, the Australian Kelpie from a small farm in Victoria considered to be the world’s oldest dog.
• Chilli, who started his acting career later in life and was most notably featured in A Place to Call Home.
• Chaser, the dog described as ‘the smartest dog in the world’.
Uplifting and truly incredible, these elderly dogs have saved lives, helped the disabled community, inspired stunning artworks, and survived against the odds, proving time and time again that age is just a number. Above all, they teach us the secret to living to a ripe old age is simply to be happy, to love and be loved in return.

The Finnish Lapphund is a Spitz breed originating from Lapland; a region that now spans the North of Finland, Sweden, Norway and parts of north-western Russia. This region is inhabited by the Indigenous Sami people. The dogs of this region adapted over thousands of years as a landrace to suit the harsh climate, work and lifestyle needs of the Sami people.
In ancient times the dogs assisted with hunting in the forests and tundra. Eventually the Sami transitioned from hunting to reindeer herding. Their dogs also transitioned from hunting companions to reindeer herding specialists. The Sami’s dogs were an integral part of their life, not only assisting with the reindeer herds, but also acting as close companions to their families. The families lived in ‘lavvus’ (the spelling differs depending on the dialect) Lavvus were temporary tepee-type structures. The dogs could often be found inside, keeping the children company. They would also hunt rodents and other small animals around the camp area and bark at potential predators. They were an all-round useful dog, whose company was greatly enjoyed by the entire family. In artwork depicting this time, Lapphund-type dogs can often be seen sitting with the children or adults, barking at birds and generally being a constant presence in the camp area.
Reindeer herding is entirely different to herding sheep and other commonly seen livestock. The Lapphund herding style is not well suited for herding sheep. Unlike the Disney depictions of reindeers, actual reindeer are stubborn, flighty, not domesticated and have antlers and hooves that can do serious damage. To herd reindeer requires great courage and agility. The dogs must also be able to quickly make their own ecisions and work well independently.
Reindeer herding was not an everyday activity for the Sami, with the reindeer living free on the tundra for most of the year. Practises differed among Sami family groups and regions but generally the reindeer were only captured and corralled, a couple of times a year, for animal husbandry purposes. Outside of these occasions very large herds consisting of hundreds, if not thousands, of reindeer would be moved to fresh pastures at different times of the year. Circa 1960s to 1970s, the Sami herding techniques evolved to the use of snowmobiles for herding the reindeer. As a consequence, the Lapphund-type dogs fell out of favour with the Sami.
In the 1970s to early 1990s, much work was carried out by modern breeders in Finland and Sweden to establish the standards of the breed. The breeders would travel to Lapland to purchase suitable dogs from the Sami people and operated breeding programs to preserve the breed.
Today, the Finnish Lapphund is among the five most popular breeds in Finland. The Finns take great pride in this dog and consider them one of their national breeds. It is now rare to find Lapphunds performing reindeer herding as a ‘job’ in Lapland, and modern Sami people are living a different way of life. Some Sami people have retained or reinstated aspects of their heritage, but very few use Lapphunds in their work. The Sami people remain forward thinking and accepting of new technology, with helicopters and drones often utilised for herding their reindeer.
The Finnish Lapphund was introduced to Australia in 1995. At time of writing (October 2020), there have been approximately 1,700 Finnish Lapphunds bred in Australia.
Finnish Lapphunds are a very friendly breed with an incredible, joyful nature. They are friendly with strangers, particularly those that give belly rubs! They are a soft and gentle breed that are good with children, the elderly and disabled people. They very much want to be involved in their families day to day life and activities.
They can become reactive towards other dogs when on leash, particularly in urban areas, if not provided with proper training in their two years of life.
They are relatively trainable compared to other Spitz breeds, with Lapphunds training and competing in obedience, rally obedience, agility, flyball, nose work, tracking, track and search, weight pull and dancing with dogs. It is important to note, however, that they are more of a challenge to train than other common working breeds. Due to their herding background, they retain an instinct to chase. In our modern context, that often means chasing birds or other animals.
The breed is smaller than medium sized, slightly longer than the height at the withers: males 49cm; females 44cm, plus or minus 3cm. The coat is profuse; the males especially exhibit an abundant mane. The guard coat is long, straight and harsh; the undercoat soft and dense. Any colour coat is permissible, but the basic colour must be dominant.
Their coat requires weekly brushing. Owners need to be equipped with appropriate brushes and combs and should be prepared to spend up to an hour weekly brushing hrough their profuse double coat. Each spring they will experience a large “coat drop” of the undercoat. This requires extensive brushing to remove or the assistance of a professional groomer.
As a Spitz breed, they do not develop a ‘doggy’ odour. In their home country they are very rarely bathed, perhaps only once a year to once every few years. Dirt is easily brushed out from their coat once dry.
The Finns are passionately adamant that this breed is to remain a natural breed resembling those once found on the tundra. As such, a Finnish Lapphund coat should not be highly ‘styled’ with grooming products. Nor should they be trimmed or shaved.
The Finnish Lapphund is generally a healthy breed. Their working-dog ancestry in harsh and freezing cold conditions has ensured that the modern lapphund is a hardy and robust dog. Expected life span is 12-15 years, with some living beyond this. When purchasing a puppy, potential owners should ensure the breeder supplies the following health testing records for each parent:
● An ACES eye certificate dated in the 24 months prior to the mating.
● Hip score test results, ideally from the ANKC CHEDS hip scheme.
● Elbow score results (may not be available where sire is from imported semen)
● DNA test results for Prcd-PRA and GSD II carrier status.
Finnish Lapphunds are suitable for individuals and families who want to involve their dog in their life and activities and who are committed to weekly, thorough grooming and regular, consistent training. As a versatile breed, they are well suited to those who would like to partake in various dog sports.

As a veterinary sports medicine specialist, I work extensively with canine athletes, developing rehabilitation programs for injured dogs or dogs that required surgery due to performance-related injuries. I have seen many dogs, especially field trial/hunt test and agility dogs, that have chronic carpal arthritis, frequently so severe that they must be retired, or at least carefully managed, for the rest of their careers. I noticed that very few of those dogs had dewclaws and began to wonder whether these appendages might, in fact, protect a dog from injuries. What I learned might surprise you.

Miller’s Guide to the Anatomy of the Dog, a veterinary anatomy text, has an excellent figure depicting the muscular anatomy of the distal forelimb. There are 2 functional muscles, the extensor pollicis longus et indicis proprius and flexor digitorum profundus, which are attached to the front dewclaw by 4 tendons (Figure 1). Each of those muscle/ tendon units has a different function in movement. That means that if you cut off the dew claws, you are preventing the muscles that were attached to the dewclaws from functioning.
In contrast, rear limb dewclaws do not have muscle/tendon attachments, so their removal might be appropriate, except in the breeds such as Briards and Beauceron in which they should be retained.
Figure 1 (left)

Figure 2 (right)
In this galloping, the dewclaw is in touch with the ground. If the dog needs to turn to the right, the dewclaw will dig into the ground to stabilise the lower leg and prevent torque.
If there are muscles and tendons attached to the dewclaws, then they most likely have a function. Broadly speaking, dewclaws have at least two different functions:
1. Grasp the ground when the dog is turning to prevent torque on the forelimb. Each time the front foot lands on the ground, particularly when the dog is cantering or galloping (see Figure 2), the dewclaw is in touch with the ground. If the dog then needs to turn, the dewclaw actively digs into the ground to stabilise the lower leg and prevent torque. In Figure 3 (opposite page) you can clearly see the dewclaw of a Corgi herding a sheep extended, ready to grip the ground. And in the image at the top of this article, you can see the dewclaws of a dog extended, ready to grip the water!
If a dog doesn’t have dewclaws, the leg will twist on its axis, creating increased pressure on the carpal bones, as well as the elbow, shoulder and toes. A lifetime of this kind of torque and the result can be carpal arthritis or injuries to and subsequent arthritis in other joints of the forelimb, such as the elbow, shoulder, and toes.
Remember, the dog is participating in the activity regardless, so there will be concussive pressures on the leg, and if the dewclaw does not help to stabilise the leg, those pressures will be transmitted to other areas of the leg, especially the joints.
2. Grip objects. We have all seen dogs using their dewclaws to grip an object, such as a ball or bone (Figure 4). I’ve even seen many photos of agility dogs gripping the teeter for stability (Figure 5). But did you know that the dewclaws’ gripping ability can, in fact, save your dog’s life? Check out the video, “Dewclaws Do Have a Purpose” at the following link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r4XflsMEk-k&t=9s for “gripping” views of dogs attempting to get out of water onto ice without the help of those ice picks on the inside of their legs. The video also shows dogs using their dewclaws to grip the ice and escape from a potentially fatal situation. I have known several dogs that drowned after falling through ice in the winter. None of them had dewclaws. If they had, perhaps they would have survived and spared their owners the incredible heartache of watching their dogs die unnecessarily.

Figure 4
1. The dewclaws will get injured. This is the most common reason I hear for removing dewclaws. A friend of mine had such a severe dewclaw injury in one of her dogs that she swore she would remove them on all the dogs she bred subsequently. But the data indicates that dewclaws are not injured very often. A study published in 2018 showed that the dewclaw was the LEAST likely toe to be injured in agility dogs, in which landing and turning from jumps and other obstacles put the toes at risk for injuries. Thus, it makes no sense to remove the dewclaws because of risk of injury. And, of course, no one would consider removing the 5th digits in the front feet, which are by far the most commonly injured toe.
2. Owners forget to trim the dewclaws. Surely this is a matter of education. Do we really want to remove a functioning digit in all dogs, just because some owners need to be reminded that they must trim the dewclaws?
3. Dewclaws make the forelimb look less straight when viewed from the front in conformation. The AKC states: “The breed standard describes the characteristics of the ideal dog to perform the function for which it was bred.” While we could have long discussions about the veracity of this statement, it is interesting to note that there are VERY few breed standards that require dewclaw removal.
So, here’s a plea to retain dogs’ dewclaws. They are a functioning digit. They are the toe least likely to be injured. Isn’t this enough to convince us not to do the dewclaws?

There is no question that dog paws take a beating and just like our own feet can be injured or impacted by random events or accidents; dogs can be clumsy and may injure their paw/s from minor slips, trips and falls. However, it is also possible for your dog to experience a serious injury which could potentially cause a permanent disability.
It is our job as dog owners to recognise abnormalities to our dog’s paws and treat them as soon as possible, to ensure the injury or condition is not exacerbated by excessive licking, or continued use, and thereby increasing the risk of infection or permanent disability.
The paw is made up of the following parts and injury to any or all parts can cause extreme pain and discomfort for your dog:
1. The claw their nails help with traction and help a dog dig in the ground and tear at prey;
2. Digital pads padding the toes, Metacarpal pad padding the foot, and Metatarsal bones assist with load bearing and shock absorbing when running and jumping;
3. Dew claws the odd nail found on some dogs which appear to have no use, however it will, if snagged or ripped out, still cause extreme pain; and
4. Carpal pad the pad behind the foot, helps with skid and traction on a slope or while stopping.
Paw pads provide a level of protection:
• to bones and joints impacting hard surfaces;
• by providing insulation for low to medium temperatures when walking;
• to the deep tissue within the paw; and
• to the sweat glands which assist in a dog’s cooling process.
Impact to your dog’s paws can vary from minor to life threatening; it is therefore recommended that all dog owners attend training in wound management to ensure they manage the injury or condition in the most appropriate way.
• Nail loss
• Wounds
• Sprains / strains
• Fractures
• Amputations / de-gloving
• Allergic reaction from bites and stings
• Cysts, ulcers and other Growths
• Ligament damage
• Nerve damage
• Fungal and bacterial infections
• Malnutrition which causes adverse impact on bone health
• Burns from extreme heat conditions
• Paw and joint trauma from strenuous activity
• Chemical burns from treatment of icy pavements or roads
• Burns from frostbite from extreme cold conditions

Sometimes things just happen; it is not always easy to see a hole/s in a park the size of a football field; it is not always easy to anticipate a piece of glass hiding in long grass, however you can take some simple precautions that may reduce the risk of injury when your dog is out and about.
• Test road temperature:
Place your bare foot onto the road and see if it is too hot for you, because if it is hot for you then it will likely be for them. If you are wearing shoes place the back of your hand on the road and test for 10 seconds.
Carry small dogs if too hot; get dogs to walk on the grass where it will be a little cooler or try to limit to shady areas for walking.
Go out early morning or early evening when temperatures are a little cooler and the sun hasn’t had chance to heat up the roads and footpaths.
• Protect from icy surfaces:
Consider investing in a pair of dog booties to protect from the ice and or chemicals / salts used on icy footpaths and roads.
Keep paw hair short to reduce hair from getting wet and freezing.
• Scan ahead of the dog walking on a leash.
• Consider the surrounding environment; has there been a drought, and if so, there is a higher risk of cracks and holes in the ground; is it a Sunday morning, the night after weekend pub activity, if so there is a greater risk of broken glass on the ground and avoid at all costs.
• Is your dog use to exercising at a pace when you are jogging on the road or the footpath?
If not, take it easy until they acclimatise, this will reduce the risk of the paw becoming cracked and split.
Exercise early mornings and early evenings to limit running on hot surfaces.
• Is your dog regularly groomed? Long nails reduce the traction and causes toes to spread impacting on the paws structure and stability.
Keep nails short
Keep hair short in between toes and pads; this also helps reduce seed build up and potential infection.
• Keep your dog’s foot pads moisturised to help reduce cracking and splitting; this is an excellent time to check for parasites and other abnormalities.
• Keep dog from potential falls and access to moving vehicles.
The following signs and symptoms are a general guide, however there are 4 key signs which will help you to start your assessment:
1. Severe bleeding
2. Obsessive licking of the paw
3. Awful smell coming from paw
4. Limping or lameness
You may notice initially an issue with one paw but remember there are usually 4 paws and what can affect one can also impact the others.
• Obsessively licking and chewing their paw
• You may notice that your dog’s paw has an awful smell
• Crying or whimpering
• You may notice your dog limping or unwilling to walk on the paw
• Bright red and inflamed paws with the top layer of the pad missing
• Inflamed lesions / sores with discharge
• Swollen toes or pads
• Hair loss from burns; this will also smell, you will likely see blisters forming
• Lacerations and abrasions causing severe bleeding
• Cracked, torn or missing nails
• You may notice part of the paw pad missing
• Cysts, Ulcers and parasites could be seen between toes
“If you know what healthy looks like, you will know what unhealthy looks like”
• Clean wound and remove any foreign objects
• Control bleeding by applying pressure with sterilised wound pad
• Apply rolled bandage to secure pad in place
• Apply Vet Wrap over the bandage; this keeps bandage dry and stops dog from chewing at the wound
• Splint paw if obvious fracture or dog is not self supporting their leg, if there has been nerve damage a dog will not be able to support their leg; secure splint using Vet Wrap or tape but make sure you apply tape either side of wound, never over wound.
• If the paw is swollen manage with ice; ensure ice or ice pack is wrapped in fabric before placing on wound or place paw into a bowl of cold water, especially if bitten by an ant.
• For burns, always run cool water over paw for a minimum of 15 minutes to help stop the burning process.
• If you have a Cone from previous vet treatments then place on dog to stop dog from touching wound or trying to remove bandages.
• Transport your dog to the Vet for clinical assessment; make sure you wrap your dog when transporting in a blanket or towel to keep warm and support while in the car.
• Always manage for Shock and always prepare for potential need of CPR while being transported.
