The Boxer has a great sense of humour and is an intelligent dog that enjoys learning. It is an easy breed to train and particularly enjoys Agility, where its splendid jumping skills and athletic ability come to the fore.
Boxers are wonderful family dogs and you will find their favourite place is by the side of the children, with whom it is intrinsically patient.

Welcome to the August magazine, which showcases several wonderful events celebrating the many ways purebred dogs enrich our community.
Leading the edition are two outstanding community events: Dogs On Show, the DOGS NSW Public Open Day, and Paws in the Park, held at Camden.
Dogs On Show, held on Saturday 13 June, combined a Championship Show and Group Show with a variety of canine sporting activities that members of the public could not only watch but also experience firsthand. The Dachshund Club of NSW hosted an Earthdog Trial, while the Border Collie Club of NSW conducted an Agility Trial, providing visitors with a fantastic insight into the diverse activities available through our sports. Coverage of this exciting event, featuring outstanding action photography by Sam Bradshaw Photography and Vero Fojt Photography, begins on page 14. Congratulations to the DOGS NSW PR Events Committee for delivering another successful public showcase.
DOGS NSW was also well represented at Camden's Paws in the Park, held on Sunday 14 May, with an information stand and the ever-popular Sprint Fun Runs attracting plenty of interest throughout the day. Volunteers from numerous affiliated clubs, the DOGS NSW Public Relations Committee, and many individual members, generously gave their time to support the event, promote responsible dog ownership and showcase the many activities available through DOGS NSW. Coverage begins on page 7.
Also featured in this edition is the DOGS NSW Library & Archives Double Championship Shows, held on Sunday 14 June. With a delightful "Once Upon a Time" theme, members, their children and their dogs enthusiastically embraced the occasion, creating a magical atmosphere both in and out of the ring. DOGS NSW SPRINTS TO CAMDEN
There is something genuinely special about seeing the DOGS NSW family out in force on community soil, and 'Paws in the Park' at Camden delivered exactly that. With more than five thousand members of the public moving through the grounds across the day, our team had the rare and rewarding opportunity to put purebred dogs, responsible breeding and the everyday joys of dog sport directly in front of the people who matter mostthe wider community.
On Sunday, 17 May 2026, the DOGS NSW Public Relations Committee stand was a hub of activity from the moment the gates opened. Families stopped to chat, ask questions, and meet the dogs face to face, and our volunteers were on hand to talk through everything from choosing the right breed for a household, to the pathways into showing, obedience, scent work, and beyond. For so many visitors, this was their first real conversation with a registered breeder or a club member, and the warmth and curiosity in those exchanges was a reminder of why community days like this matter. Education, in our world, almost always begins with a friendly hello and a wagging tail.

The volunteers were representatives from the Irish Wolfhound Club of NSW, Field Spaniel Club of NSW, All Star Dog Sports Club, Fast Paws Sydney, Basenji Club of New South Wales, Australia, The Afghan Hound Club of NSW, Golden Retriever Club of NSW and the many DOGS NSW members who attend to support, participate and enjoy the day.
With approximately 3,000 people attending throughout the day, it was incredibly rewarding to hear from Camden Council Event Staff that Sprint Fun Runs were one of the highlights of the event. Thanks must go Rachel Mills of the All Stars Dog Sports Club, who helped bring the Sprint Fun Runs to life.
The track was a magnet for crowds all day long, with spectators cheering on dogs of every shape and size as they powered down the lane. The Sprint Dog Fun Runs gave visiting pets a chance to have a go too, and watching first-time competitors discover the sheer joy their dog could have on the track was easily one of the highlights of the day.

By the end of the afternoon, we had spoken with loads of dog lovers, handed out countless resources, made new friends, and very likely planted the seed for the next generation of show, sport and breed enthusiasts.
Days like 'Paws in the Park' remind us that the work of educating, advocating and celebrating purebred dogs doesn't only happen in the ring or at the trial ground. It happens at the picnic blanket, at the sprint track, and at the corner of a club stand where someone asks, "What breed is that?" and a conversation begins.
A special mention also belongs to the Camden community itself. The warmth and enthusiasm with which locals embraced the event, turning up in their thousands, often with the family dog in tow, speaks volumes about the kind of community Camden has built. It is a place that clearly loves its dogs, and that love was felt by every volunteer, handler, and club representative who spent the day on the grounds.

EARTHDOG
Earthdog
As the popularity of dog sports continues to grow, there is little knowledge among the widespread dog population about Earth Dog.
So what is Earth Dog?
Many smaller terrier breeds and Dachshunds were originally bred to hunt, chase and go to ground (enter dens) to bolt quarry (causing prey like foxes and vermin to run).
Today, the sport of Earth Dog puts these instincts to the test in a safe, simulated, hunting environment. Dogs locate a den entrance, enter and navigate an underground maze until they find and work the quarry (non-live prey) by digging, barking, growling, lunging and biting at it. Dogs work off-lead in a safe fenced area.
As the underground tunnels are 23cm square, only Dachshunds, small terriers and some other approved breeds are eligible to participate, unlike several other dog sports which are open for all DOGS NSW registered dogs.
Earthdog has a limited season each year, commencing with education and training days in April, then monthly tests from May till August, hosted by the DOGS NSW Earthdog Working Party, The Border Terrier Club of NSW and the Dachshund Club of NSW. The May 2026 tests were successful with many first time testers and experienced dogs attending and earning qualifications towards Earth Dog titles. Please see the participants and winners below. Next-Generation Breeding with MyDogDNA™
The science behind Wisdom Panel’s testing
Wisdom Panel is a veterinary genetics company founded in 2005, offering purpose-bred dog breeder testing since 2011. Wisdom Panel’s MyDogDNA testing uses modern Illumina microarray (“panel”) technology.
This method provides affordable testing for thousands of DNA markers, tailored to the needs of each breed, with a single DNA sample. The resulting reports include broad-spectrum disorder screening, genetic diversity and physical trait testing, and internationally standardised DNA profiling for self-serve parentage testing.
What Wisdom Panel has learned in the last 10 years
Mapped dog genomes and microarray technology represent a step change in dog genetic research in the last 20 years, giving birth to the current era of “big data” and rapidly increasing the pace of discovery. In 2023, Wisdom Panel published the “1 million dog paper,” representing over 200,000 purebred dogs from 150 countries, as well as 800,000 mixed-breed dogs, surveying their genetic disorders and the clinical relevance of each disorder using linked medical records. The findings include:
Genetic disease isn’t rare. 57% of all dogs tested, whether purebred or mixed breed, carried at least one genetic disease risk variant. Not all dogs will go on to develop disease due to additional factors, but it’s valuable information in planning to reduce disease risk.
Some disorders are actually more common in mixed-breed dogs. However in purebreds, dogs with two copies of recessive mutations are often more common, because they come from a common gene pool.
Some disorders reliably produce disease regardless of breed background while others are more complex and may express differently depending on the dog’s ancestry, suggesting additional environmental or genetic factors.
MyBreedData
Wisdom Panel launched a free, public website in 2018 called MyBreedData.com. On this site, breeders can view global breed diversity and disorder frequency statistics closer to real time from worldwide Wisdom Panel breeder testing, allowing breeders to participate in the research and surveillance process in their breed.
In common breeds it is often unclear how widespread a genetic disorder may be, and many breeds are rare enough that very little organized research has been done. With global data from MyBreedData, these discoveries power the recommendations and breed-specific findings highlighted in MyDogDNA.
The fabulous world of canine traits
The physical traits a dog displays do not necessarily indicate the sum total of what that dog carries in their genotype, leading to surprises in litters of puppies. By testing for more than 50 physical trait variants, breeders can detect their breeding dogs’ potential to produce desirable or undesirable traits in litters.
Genetic diversity and the breeder’s role
Many dog breeds have average COIs equivalent to the mating of full siblings if COI is calculated back to founders. Genetic diversity testing is the next generation in diversity management, with several benefits over the limitations of COI. Low genetic diversity is known to contribute to:
Shorter lifespan
Decreased litter sizes
Decreased fertility
Increased puppy mortality
Increased rate of genetic disease
MyDogDNA includes genetic diversity scores for all tested dogs, using markers spread across all chromosomes, and compared against averages for the breed when available, to provide valuable context for the breeder, regardless of COI depth or availability.
DNA profiling and parentage testing
DNA profiling, also known as genetic ‘fingerprinting,’ is the foundation for reliable parentage testing to protect pedigree integrity. MyDogDNA uses the newest international standard panel, ISAG 2020 (SNP), to uniquely identify each dog tested. Breeders can then conduct self-serve parentage analysis and generate certificates, comparing profiles between puppies and candidate parents in their account. Parentage analysis confirms that a puppy’s DNA markers either are or are not consistent with those of its sire and dam. Profiling and parentage are increasingly required by registration bodies, but are also used optionally to confirm sires in dual-sire litters, for imported dogs, frequently used sires, and for frozen semen.

Dogs on Show was held at Orchard Hills on 13 June, marking another successful year as part of the Sydney Show calendar since 2010. We were fortunate to have a beautiful winter's day to showcase our various canine activities.
The event featured two conformation shows with over 900 entries, alongside demonstrations in Agility, Rally, Obedience, Dances with Dogs, Trick Dog, Earthdog, Drafting, Scent Work, Junior Handling and Retrieving. Attendees enjoyed themed club displays and the Pageant of Breeds, which was a personal highlight. Additionally, the Macarthur Dog Training Club provided obedience and rally displays and try-outs, while the Agility Club of NSW Inc presented Agility demonstrations as well as try-outs on the day.
This event was made possible by our major sponsors, Royal Canin, as well as Knose Pet Insurance, Marellan Show Ribbons, Sydney Dog Lovers Festival and Dog News Australia.

UTILTY & UTILITY EXCELLENT AWARDS OF EXCELLENCE
Only one medallion per class, the highest, will be awarded to any dog. All eligible entrants MUST notify Christiane Diebler, via email at cdiebler@iinet.net.au, of their eligibility to be awarded the medal on the prescribed form by no later than Friday 18 September 2026. Failure to do so will mean no medal can be awarded.
PERPETUAL AWARDS
For the purpose of these awards (except for the Beale Stitt Memorial Award) trials must be between Saturday 4 October 2025 and Friday 2 October 2026 inclusive. ALL applications for Perpetual Awards MUST be lodged with the Scorer, or nominee, no later than 1.00 pm on Saturday 3 October 2026 on the prescribed form.

THE JACK LOTZKES AWARD
For highest total aggregate scoring UD dog/bitch who must qualify on Saturday 3, Sunday 4 & Monday 5 October 2026. Should there be no dog/bitch that gains 3 qualifying scores then a dog/bitch will require 2 Open and 2 Utility qualifying scores to be eligible. If the conditions in the first two instances cannot be met to determine a winner, then a dog/bitch will require 3 qualifying scores in the Open Class of 185 points or more.
STATE TITLES MEDALLIONS
For Novice, Open, Utility & Utility Dog Excellent - To be eligible, must enter all three trials held on Saturday 3, Sunday 4 & Monday 5 October 2026. The qualifying scores from either trial held on 3 or 4 October 2026, plus the qualifying score from the NSW Obedience State Titles on Monday 5 October 2026, will be counted.
COMMUNITY COMPANION DOG AWARDS
1st, 2nd & 3rd will be awarded on the total qualifying aggregate score from either trial held on 3 October or 4 October, plus the qualifying score from the NSW Obedience State Titles on Monday 5 October 2026.
TRIPLE QUALIFIER MEDALLIONS
For competitors who qualify with the same dog in the same class at the Eastern Suburbs Dog Training Club Trial held 3 October, the Penrith Kennel & Obedience Club Trial held 4 October and the State Titles Trial held 5 October 2026.

Boxer
History
The Boxer was developed in Germany in the late 1800s from the combination of early Bullenbeiser dogs (Mastiff type) and English Bulldogs.
Early Boxers were bred to serve a varied purpose – that of a guard, escort and companion dog, full of strength and energy. The Boxer excels in all of these areas, and has an outstanding reputation as a family pet, loyal companion, tractable guard and an impressive show dog.
John P. Wagner, author of The Boxer, says of the breed, “Other breeds have pronounced specialised talents…hunting, herding, trailing and so on, but for a combination of the outstanding virtues of many with the faults of few, our Boxer is the most gifted of canines. For the man, woman or child who wants an all-round dog, he has no equal. No other dog is more individual in appearance, more keenly intelligent or sanely even-tempered.”1.
Appearance
The Boxer is a medium-sized, smooth-coated dog, with a sturdy and square frame. It is muscular, yet retains elastic and energetic movement and a distinct degree of elegance. The Boxer’s head imparts a unique stamp in complete balance with the body, with its upturned chin, forward-facing dark eyes and black mask in relief to its attractive fawn or brindle colouring, often with white markings.
Temperament
The Boxer is renowned from olden times for its great love and faithfulness to its master and household, as well as its alertness and fearless courage as a defender and protector.
The Boxer is docile, but distrustful of strangers; this makes it an equable guard dog. It is bright and friendly in play, but brave and determined when roused.
SPOTLIGHT
Health
This breed generally keeps very good health. Responsible breeders will screen for inheritable diseases, particularly for heart diseases such as aortic and pulmonic stenosis as well as cardiomyopathy. Unfortunately, the biggest health issue in Boxers is cancer; tumours are the main cause of early loss. On the whole though, the Boxer is healthy and hardy with a normal life span being 10 - 12 years.
Maintenance
With its short, smooth coat and clean ways, the Boxer is a relatively low-maintenance dog. The coat is easy to clean and has no major odour. A regular bath and a quick brush to remove any loose hair is all that is required.
The Boxer is very active, and both requires and enjoys regular exercise with its owner, such as walking, jogging or running loose at a dog-friendly park. A good-sized, well-fenced yard is also essential, where dogs can play with toys, spend time with the kids and wander at will. This breed is relatively easy to house-train and will soon understand where its ‘inside bed’ is. If living outside, an elevated bed in a warm and draft-free place is required. Boxers are generally great eaters and should be fed a healthy, balanced diet.
Suitability
The Boxer is the quintessential family dog.
It has a great temperament and is active, loyal, hardy and clean. You will find its favourite place is by the side of the children, with whom it is intrinsically patient and stoic.
The Boxer also has a great sense of humour and is an intelligent dog that enjoys learning. As such, it is an easy breed to train. It particularly enjoys Agility, where its splendid jumping skills and athletic ability come to the fore.

The DOGS NSW Library and Archives Committee's 'Once Upon a Time' Championship Shows proved to be a fairytale success, bringing together exhibitors, families and dog enthusiasts for a day packed with competition, learning, fun and community spirit on Sunday 14 June 2026.
Despite winter weather shifting from cold and drizzly to warm and sunny throughout the day, the positive atmosphere never wavered. Thanks to an outstanding committee, a hardworking team of stewards and a wonderful panel of Judges from across Australia and New Zealand, the event delivered something for everyone.
At the AM Blue Show under Judge Ms Roni Oma (WA), Best in Show was awarded to E & M Borg's English Springer Spaniel, Sup Ch Silvaspring Emerald Sky . In the afternoon Red Show , Mrs Kay Eldred (NSW) awarded Best in Show to Gibson, Hardwicke, Ward and Valdez's Italian Greyhound, A20 Sup Ch Jayveeque Sunday . Congratulations to all winners and exhibitors on the quality of dogs and their outstanding sportsmanship on the day.
Beyond the rings, the event was alive with activity. The colourful 'Once Upon a Time' Dog and Owner Book Parade delighted spectators, while the Scavenger Hunt kept participants entertained throughout the grounds. The ever-popular BBQ was busy all day, and the Jumble Sale was an overwhelming success. Thanks to the generosity of donors, bargain hunters discovered everything from books and memorabilia to dog-related treasures, proving once again that one person's trash really can become another person's treasure. The committee looks forward to bringing the sale back again in the future.
A particular highlight was the Junior Handler Workshop. Twenty-two young handlers participated, gaining valuable new skills, confidence and encouragement to remain involved in the dog world for years to come.

As winter sets in, colder weather, shorter days and seasonal household hazards can put pets at greater risk of illness, injury and discomfort, making it important for owners to take extra steps to keep their animals safe and healthy throughout the cooler months.
New claims data highlights the added health pressures winter can place on pets, with a notable spike in mobility and joint-related conditions during the colder months. According to RSPCA Pet Insurance CEO Brad Smith, claims for these ailments increase significantly in winter, with the average vet visit costing $2,462.
“We know that the top five issues resulting in vet visits year-round are ingestion of foreign objects, skin allergies, ear infections, gastroenteritis and vomiting, but during winter, the most noticeable rise in claims is for mobility and joint issues,” says Smith. These conditions can worsen in colder weather, making prevention and early care especially important.
Smith also warns that winter routines can contribute to seasonal health issues for pets. “We all feel the pull of the couch after work when the days are shorter and cooler, but less exercise, reduced fresh air, cold weather and drier indoor environments can affect pets too by increasing the risk of weight gain, stiffness, skin irritations and infections such as kennel cough.”
COLD TOLERANCE
Dr Melissa Meehan, Director of Veterinary Services, RSPCA Victoria, says that in the chillier regions, which include Tasmania, anywhere south of Sydney, the high plains, and the Australian Alps (which include the ironically named Mount Hotham in winter), several risks arise. “Among them are hypothermia, frostbite and chemical poisoning.”
Dr Meehan says smaller breeds, short-haired pets, puppies and kittens as well as senior pets are particularly vulnerable to cold weather, as they struggle to regulate body temperature and have less body fat. “Where possible, it’s best to keep pets indoors during winter,” she says, adding that short-haired breeds may benefit from a jacket or sweater, while outdoor pets need warm, dry shelter and bedding.
Pet owners should also watch for signs of hypothermia, including shivering, reluctance to walk, whining, hunched posture or tucked tails, especially in underweight animals. discomfort and stiffness in joints,” she explains.

COLD TOLERANCE
She says colder weather can also worsen joint stiffness and mobility issues in pets. “Cold weather doesn’t cause joint problems, but it does result in reduced circulation, muscle tightening and thicker joint fluid which increase discomfort and stiffness in joints,” she explains.
While pets often begin showing signs of joint disease at the age of 7 years, claims data show that many pets visiting vets for mobility and joint-related conditions are even younger, highlighting that these issues are not limited to older animals and are something all pet owners should be aware of.
SNIFFLES, COUGHS & RESPIRATORY ISSUES
Dr Meehan says pets are more prone to winter illnesses such as kennel cough during colder months, with claims rising as dogs pick up infections at parks, daycare and boarding facilities, while cats can be affected in poorly ventilated indoor spaces.
She recommends keeping vaccinations up to date, in particular Bordetella and Canine Parainfluenza virus, which cause kennel cough and ensuring pets have warm bedding and well-ventilated shelter. Owners should watch for symptoms including coughing, nasal discharge, lethargy and noisy breathing, and seek veterinary advice if symptoms develop.
WINTER ITCH & SKIN HEALTH
Heated homes and lower humidity during winter can dry out pets’ skin, worsening allergies, itching and infections, with skin-related claims remaining consistently high throughout the colder months.
Dr Meehan recommends regular brushing to maintain natural oils, limiting baths, and using moisturising shampoos when needed. She says winter can also increase the risk of ear infections, particularly in floppy-eared breeds, due to dampness and reduced airflow indoors. Owners should avoid getting water in ears, dry pets thoroughly after bathing and watch for signs including head shaking redness, odour, discharge or excessive scratching.
For pets, as with people, prevention matters. A balanced diet, regular exercise and consistent grooming can help protect their health through winter, but Smith urges owners to act quickly if something seems wrong.
