The German Shepherd Dog is recognised for is its excellent character, marked by its courage, intelligence, devotion and nobility. They require lots of contact with people, particularly in the early formative stages (up to 20 weeks). Training should be consistent, kind and firm, giving them boundaries for acceptable behaviour.

Chairman's REPORT
Dear Members,
The last few months have showcased many of our promotional shows to the general public with the successful double weekend of the Dogs On Show Open Day on Saturday 15 June, hosted by the DOGS NSW Events Committee. It was followed by the Library & Archives Committee double Championship shows on Sunday 16 June.
The organisers of the Dog Lovers Festival will be revving up to host their event at Sydney Olympic Park on Saturday and Sunday, 24-25 August, which should prove to be a great event. DOGS NSW will be in attendance with not only an Information Stand but a dedicated Sports Stand, Ask the Breeder Stand and a DOGS NSW media wall where visitors can have their photo taken with our members’ wonderful purebred dogs. A busy weekend for DOGS NSW Public Relations Committee and its volunteers who will be manning these stands as well as our attending Breed Clubs.
As we have had a long-standing association with the organisers of the Dog Lovers Festival, they are offering a 30% discount on tickets to the Sydney event for DOGS NSW members. Members can access the discount at the following link: https://bit.ly/4eLURGh and typing in the code DOGSNSW.
The K9 Natural 2024 Dogs Australia Agility Nationals was run at Orchard Hills last month from 9-14 July, a massive six-day event which was of great interest, as the public and media turned up to watch and become more involved in a most popular dog sport. Over 450 competitors from all over the country made their way to compete in the event, vying for the chance to become a National Champion Judges came, not only from around the country, but from Slovakia, Hungary and New Zealand. Coverage of the Agility Nationals will appear in an upcoming edition of DOGS NSW magazine so make sure to look out for it.
The Media & Government Legislation Committee is continuing with face to face meetings with the NSW Government Members of Parliament, and again we urge all DOGS NSW members to keep following on with letters to their MPs on how the Companion Animals Amendment Bill (Puppy Farms) 2024 will adversely affect the average family in acquiring a pet that suits a specific size, temperament and coat traits from responsible, registered DOGS NSW breeders.

Dear Members,
Editor's MESSAGE
Although Saturday 15 June proved a wet and somewhat bleak day, the new DOGS NSW Events Committee pressed on to host another colourful and spectacular Dogs on Show Championship Show and Open Day. Armed with a team of volunteers, a host of sporting demonstrations and breed stands and Dr Rob Zammit as MC, the day proceeded well, and the rain held out long enough for visitors to arrive and experience the day’s proceedings. Please turn to page 10 to enjoy the four-page coverage of this annual event.
Closely following Dogs on Show (the next day, in fact) on Sunday 16 June, the DOGS NSW Library & Archives Committee held their double Championship Red and Yellow Shows with, fortunately, much better weather. With coverage of both shows featured, please turn to page 14.
The Earthdog season also commenced over the weekend of June 15 and 16, with the Dachshund and Border Terrier Clubs hosting four tests and attracting over 110 entries. For more information about Earthdog and upcoming tests please turn to page 22.
Royal Canin has kindly allowed DOGS NSW to reproduce some of their veterinary articles, which I’m sure most of our members will find most informative. The first of the articles is about “Your dog’s diet and their digestive health,” which appears on page 24.
Other articles featured this month are ‘The Dog Down Under’ winners of the Most Talented, Everyday Hero, Hardest Working, Sporting Legend and Oldest Dog; ‘Surprising Facts about Dogs’ and ‘Pets in Business’, commencing from page 26.
The spotlight breed this month features the German Shepherd Dog. There are many reasons why German Shepherds stand in the front rank of canine royalty, with their noble character and high intelligence; however, experts say their defining attributes are loyalty, courage, confidence, the ability to learn commands for many tasks and the willingness to put their life on the line in defence of loved ones. To read more about the breed please turn to page 18.
The winner of June’s competition, to win a K9 Swim Package, was Darien Northcote. Congratulations Darien!
Finally, the Sydney Dog Lovers Festival is taking place this month at Sydney Olympic Park (see ad on page 9) and the organisers have offered our members 30% off ticket prices! To access this offer, please use the link and code below:

Research reveals longest-lived and shortest-lived dogs
WORDS: Adam Vidler
Everybody wants their beloved pooch to live a long and healthy life, and major new research out of the UK could help owners and breeders maximise their dog’s years on earth.
A study of more than 580,000 individual dogs from more than 150 different breeds aimed to establish which dog breeds had the most longevity - and which the least.
Kirsten M McMillan, from Dogs Trust UK, led the research, which was published in Scientific Reports. It found that small, long-nosed dog breeds such as Whippets and Dachshunds had the longest life expectancies in the UK, with a median maximum age of 13.3 years.
Medium-sized flat-faced breeds, such as British Bulldogs, had the lowest life median life expectancy of 9.1 years for males and 9.6 years for females.
Amongst the 12 most popular breeds, which accounted for more than 50 per cent of all recorded pure breeds in the database, Labrador Retrievers had a median life expectancy of 13.1 years, Jack Russell Terriers had a median life expectancy of 13.3 years, and Cavalier King Charles Spaniels had a median life expectancy of 11.8 years.
Purebred dogs had a higher median life expectancy than crossbreeds (12.7 years compared to 12 years), while female dogs had a slightly higher median life expectancy than males (12.7 years compared to 12.4 years).
“This information provides evidence to inform discussions regarding pedigree health, whilst helping current/prospective owners, breeders, policymakers, funding bodies and welfare organisations improve decision making regarding canine welfare,” the study authors said.

OPEN DAY
Presented by DOGS NSW Events Committee
Photography: Daniel Harmis
The Annual Dogs on Show Open Day was held at DOGS NSW Orchard Hills grounds on Saturday 15 June, and this was the first time the event was run by the newly-formed DOGS NSW Events Committee. It was a spectacular visual event visually, with so many things to look at, and the time and effort spent by so many people on this show is truly humbling. I would like to thank all the committee members for their huge contributions, especially Susie Kearnes and Kerry Christofi, for their meticulous work.
Dr Rob Zammit was wonderful as MC in the main ring, and the work of John Mclean in setting up, packing down and interacting with the public was tremendous. A huge thank you to all the volunteers who assisted John on the day: Tom Mangan, Lyn Mansfield and Sylvia Brackman.
Big thanks also to the Judges and Stewards who worked so hard to ensure the event ran smoothly and finished before dark.
While the weather was against us, a considerable amount of public that came to see what was on show, and those who saw the Pageant of Breeds would have been blown away by the wonderful costumes worn by the entrants. This was competition was difficult to judge as they were all so good. Congratulations to the winners. The ultimate winner was the entry for the the English Toy Terrier, closely followed by the Chow Chows, and the Irish Irish Wolfhounds came in third.
There were also special presentations to two DOGS NSW members who had been members for over 60 years: Marcia McAdam and Colleen Mitchell. Marcia (pictured right receiving her certificate from Events Committee Chair John Bryson) was an avid Breeder of British Bulldogs under her prefix GATELY and has been a member for 78 years (since 1946).
Colleen Mitchell has been a DOGS NSW member since 1964, and both she and her husband, Jim, were generous donors to the Royal Agricultural Society of NSW and DOGS NSW for many years. Colleen was a former All Breeds Judge and a former Director of DOGS NSW in the 1980s. An avid writer and publisher of many breed books, Colleen also has a vast library of dog books and was a keen breeder of Papillons for many years under her prefix WAIWURRI.
The winner of the breed stands went to the British Bulldog Club Inc. for a wonderful display of everything British. Second place went to the Pomeranian Club of NSW, then third place to the Gordon Setter Club of NSW Inc.
There was so much to see and do on the day with Agility, Dances With Dogs, Trick Dog, Earth Dog, Retrieving, Jack Russell Racing, Junior Handlers for the public to try, and, of course, one of the crowd favourites, Duck Herding.
At the conformation show, the Best in Show was awarded by Judge Mr Mick Wilkinson from Victoria, to his ultimate winner, the Puli RUSTUFARION RHYTHM N BLUES, owned by Royson Valore.
Winners of the ‘Paw Print’ competition to win a double pass to the Sydney Dog Lovers Festival were Morgan Takerei and Kristy Filewood.
Finally, a big thank you to everyone who was involved: the volunteers, the ground staff, the members and clubs who proudly promoted their breeds, the people from the sporting clubs and committees who performed their fantastic demonstrations and, of course, everybody who entered on the day - without you we would have nothing to show.
~ John Bryson, Chair DOGS NSW Events Committee

RED & YELLOW SHOWS ~16 JUNE 2024 SHOWS
The day dawned relatively warm and sunny and was an even busier day for the Committee than is typical for any double show. Members of the Committee got the show ‘on the road’ and continued the excellent work of the previous day manning the Library & Archives display and book sales. The day was not quite as busy as at DOGS on SHOW, but we still brought our important message to the members and public. We exist and have an important place in the dog world.
For those of us who attended Dogs on Show the day before, the 10.00am start was very welcome for workers and exhibitors alike.
A big thank you to all of the exhibitors for your entries, and well done to all our judges and stewards for making the day a success. Also many thanks to our sponsors Royal Canin and Delete.
Our photographers, Sandra Patterson and Barbara Killworth captured great memories for the winners on the day, and we hope all of you simply enjoyed our hobby in a relaxed atmosphere with your friends.
We invite you to come along on our open days to see what we have in the Library/Research/Education building and welcome your continued support of our shows, by way of donations and assistance in the future.

SPOTLIGHT
German Shepherd Dog
History
The German Shepherd Dog (GSD) or Deutsche Schäferhund originated from herding breeds in Germany in the late 1800s, under the guidance of Captain Max von Stephanitz. People soon realised this was a dog of extraordinary intelligence suited for working. In 1899, a breed society known as Der Verein für Deutsch Schäferhunde (The Club for German Shepherd Dogs) was formed in Germany. The first registered dog in the studbook was Horand von Grafath.
Early imports of GSDs, known as ‘German sheepdogs’ reached Western Australia around 1904. Two of these were Freia vom Park and Stephen vom Park. Others were imported to Melbourne around 1925, with other states soon following. In October 1928, the Federal Government banned the importation of GSDs. During the ban, which continued for another 43 years, a number of GSDs were smuggled into the country. The ban was lifted in 1972, with some restrictions remaining until 1976. The breed then enjoyed a surge in popularity, with record numbers of GSDs being shown at national shows during the 1980s. The popularity peaked during the 1990s when the GSD became the most common breed in Australia in terms of registrations of puppies. Today, the breed is still one of the most frequently registered.
In 2011, the GSD standard was amended to include the Long Stock Coat variety, previously ungraded in the show ring. From 1 January 2012, Long Stock Coats were separately registered, could be exhibited as such, and compete independently from Stock Coat varieties. The standard for both varieties is identical except for coat description, representing a major change in breed history. From 2023, interbreeding was permitted between the Stock Coat and Long Stock Coat varieties. 1.
Appearance
The GSD is medium-sized, slightly elongated, strong and well-muscled; the bones are dry, and the overall construction is firm. The length of the body is greater than the height at the withers by about 10 –17 per cent. 2.
The Stock Coat GSD (normal coated) should carry a thick undercoat, and the outer coat should be as dense as possible and be made up of straight, hard, close-lying hairs. The correct coat is weatherproof, allowing the dog to work in all conditions.
The Long Stock Coat GSD (long-haired) has longer outer hair. The trousers are long and thick, and the tail is very bushy. A Long Stock Coat without an undercoat is not permissible.
The top coat should be long, soft and not close fitting, with feathering on the ears and legs, bushy breeches and bushy tail forming flags below. It should be short on the head, including the inside of the ears, the front side of the legs, and the feet and toes. It is longer and heavily coated on the neck, almost forming a mane. The hair lengthens on the back of the legs to the pasterns or hock joints, and on the back of the thighs, it forms distinct breeching. 3
The colour of the GSD is ideal as camouflage, for working either in the field, or blending into the background at night. Black and tan (gold) with the black saddle pattern and black mask on the face, is the most common colour. Sable dogs (red or grey) would be the next most common colour. These dogs have black tipping of the coat in a similar saddle pattern, but it can be more extensive over the body.
Black-coated dogs are less commonly seen these days. The undercoat is, except in all-black dogs, usually grey or fawn. Black-coated GSDs with additional colour are generally referred to as a Bi-Colour.
Small white markings on the chest as well as a lighter colour on the insides of the legs is permissible but not desirable. The nose must be black in all colour types. The colour white is not permitted in the standard. White is a recessive colour that virtually never seen in the current bloodlines. Early on, white was undesirable as it was too easily seen at night and could not be readily distinguished from the sheep. 4.
Temperament
The GSD is of a well-balanced temperament, steady of nerves, self-assured, absolutely ‘at ease’ (except when provoked), good-natured, attentive and easy to train. It possesses instinctive drive, resilience and self-confidence and is suitable as a companion, watchdog, protection, service and herding dog.
The GSD is recognised for its excellent character, courage, intelligence, devotion and nobility. GSDs love human companionship, and owners will find that this breed just wants to be with and please them. GSDs have a distinct personality marked by an intelligence and fearlessness that does not generally tend to make immediate friendships. Although it is normal for these dogs to appear aloof, they should be approachable and never hostile when with their owners. GSDs have a keen sense of humour and enjoy playful games that keep their active minds alert. Once you accept this breed into your family, you will gain an intelligent, loyal pet that will give you a lifetime of love, affection and fulfilment. 5.
Maintenance
The GSD is relatively easy to maintain by brushing and combing each week; however, the Long Stock Coat GSD requires more grooming. GSDs are a double-coated breed, with a coarse, water-resistant, outer coat and a heavy, woolly undercoat. The outer coat hairs are shed regularly, while the inner coat hairs are shed twice a year, more heavily in spring, and may require daily or weekly combing when dropping coat. The breed requires no clipping and only occasional baths. 6.
Suitability
GSDs are generally very good with children. Adult GSDs will generally tolerate a degree of rough play from young children. Of course, all play should be supervised, particularly when strange children are mixing with the dog’s own family’s children.
The GSD requires lots of contact with people, particularly in the early formative stages (up to 20 weeks). With poor socialisation, or a lack of firm and consistent handling, they can become spoilt and unruly. With a GSD, one should be consistent, kind and firm, giving them boundaries for acceptable behaviour.
Adult GSDs are active and will require regular exercise. Puppies, on the other hand, should not be over-exercised. Gradually increase the exercise over time until, as young adult dogs, they are being taken on regular walks. GSDs also need a lot of space, such as a fenced yard or decent-sized dog run. As with most working dogs, GSDs can become easily bored and even destructive if not given adequate outlets for their energy. They are known as “Velcro dogs” as they prefer to be close to their master or mistress. 7.
Health
As with most breeds, there are genetic diseases, but responsible breeders do regular health checks before breeding. Please contact the German Shepherd Dog League of NSW Inc. for further information.

Your dog’s diet and their digestive health
E ach component of your dog’s food has a role to play in helping support their digestive health. Learn more about the role of diet in managing digestive sensitivities in your dog.
Just like humans, dogs can suffer from digestive problems that cause discomfort, unpleasant symptoms, and sometimes wider-reaching health issues. Their diet is an important part of helping manage digestive sensitivities and maintaining a healthy digestive system.
How a dog’s digestion works
Along each stage of the digestive system, your dog digests and absorbs nutrients from its food. One of the main organs that does this is the small intestine, which has a very large surface area with different types of cells to make nutrient absorption as effective as possible. In the small intestine, your dog absorbs fats, vitamins, carbohydrates and minerals and completes the digestion and absorption of protein, which begins in the stomach.
Across these organs, microflora – also known as ‘beneficial’ bacteria – contribute to a healthy and functioning digestive system. The bacteria present in the gastrointestinal tract are regulated by genetics and other factors, including diet. In the small intestine, these beneficial bacteria are accompanied by cells that act as a protective immune response against foreign bodies or ‘bad’ bacteria.
Your dog is naturally tolerant of its microflora, but if it develop an intolerance, this can lead to chronic gastrointestinal issues. Similarly, if the immune response cells begin to react to things it would normally tolerate, your dog’s digestive system may start to develop an intolerance to normally harmless elements, such as food.
Your dog’s diet and their digestion
The food you give your dog can affect their digestion and the microflora in their gut. A varied diet can cause unnecessary strain on your dog’s digestion and cause problems.
Their food needs to be highly digestible to avoid digestive sensitivities, and should contain easily absorbed essential nutrients. One dietary component is protein, commonly provided by animal sources, such as chicken; high-quality manufactured foods will use proteins which are more easily digested and less likely to trigger digestive problems. For example, wheat gluten is highly digestible and is a highly concentrated protein source.
Fibre
Fibre is an important part of your dog’s diet but needs to be balanced. Fibre can be used as part of their diet to help regulate movement in their large intestine and improve stool quality, which is particularly helpful if your dog has digestive sensitivities or poor stool quality.
Fibres can support healthy gastrointestinal function and help your dog feel full after meals. Prebiotics are a type of fibre and can help beneficial bacteria grow and thrive in your dog’s system.
Carbohydrates
Carbohydrates are an important component of your dog’s food, as they provide a great source of energy and carbohydrate sources in your dog’s food should be highly digestible.
Fat can be a useful element in managing your dog’s digestive sensitivities. High-fat diets can be effective in giving your dog the energy it needs without it having to consume large quantities of food. However, lower-fat diets can help in instances of stomach sensitivity or when your dog is sensitive to dietary fat.
If you’ve recognised your dog is suffering from a digestive issue, make sure to visit your vet; they will be able to advise you about a diet for your dog which can help maintain a healthy digestive system.
Spotting signs of digestive problems in your dog
If you’ve recently noticed some changes to your dog’s behaviour when it comes to eating or bowel movements, they may be a sign of digestive problems. If you’ve noticed changes in your dog’s digestion, bowel movements or eating, it’s important to take them to your vet so they can conduct a full examination. However, there are also many signs you can look out for which may indicate specific digestive problems.
Understanding your dog’s digestion and what’s ‘normal’ for them when it comes to bowel movements and other bodily functions is useful, as you’ll be able to quickly spot if something isn’t right.
Diarrhoea and digestive problems in dogs
Diarrhoea is a common symptom of digestive issues, particularly in the large or small intestine. If your dog has diarrhoea, they will need to move their bowels more frequently and do so regularly. Their stool is likely to be more liquid-like than solid and may contain mucous. Large intestine conditions result in your dog having small volumes of diarrhoea but passing these very frequently.
Constipation in dogs
Constipation is another common symptom of digestive problems and can have a number of potential underlying causes. If your dog is constipated, their faeces will be hard or dry, and they will move their bowels infrequently. They may also show signs of increased straining when attempting to move their bowels.
Vomiting and regurgitation in your dog
Some digestive problems can result in your dog regurgitating or vomiting, which are two different bodily functions with different causes. Regurgitation is a passive activity that can happen soon after swallowing, resulting in your dog bringing up undigested, solid food. They may also show pain when swallowing. Vomiting is a reflex action accompanied by nausea, retching or hypersalivation; food and liquids are brought up, and food may be partially digested in stomach acid. These symptoms are most often associated with digestive problems, such as issues with the transport of food to the stomach via the esophagus and with the stomach or broader gastrointestinal system itself.
Your dog’s behaviour and appearance
In addition to diarrhoea, constipation, vomiting and regurgitation, your dog may exhibit changes in their behaviour and appearance which can signal digestive problems. For example, chronic digestive issues can cause an inability to absorb all the nutrients the body needs, leading to weight loss and a dry, dull, brittle coat.
Appetite changes, along with flatulence and abdominal discomfort, may be a sign of problems in the small intestine. I f your dog exhibits any of these symptoms frequently, this could indicate they are suffering from chronic gastrointestinal problems.
Getting to know your dog’s eating habits and other bodily processes is the first step in recognising when they may have a digestive issue. If their behaviour has changed significantly, including showing signsofvomiting, constipationor diarrhoea, it’s crucial to visit your local vet so they can advise you on the best c ourse of action.
Australia’s most Heroic, Talented, Sporting, Hard Working and Oldest Dogs revealed
The search for Australia’s most pawsome pooches in the inaugural The Dog Down Under campaign has ended, revealing the incredible tales of bravery, resilience, dedication and tail-wagging love Australians across the country share with their dogs.
Hosted by Lara Shannon, Author of World of Dogs and Eat, Play, Love (your dog) and Host of Channel 10’s Pooches at Play and 7TWO’s Animal SOS Australia, the initiative began with a national Call for Entries, followed by six weeks of interviewing and filming entrants to sniff out the final Top 10* for each category.
Finalists for the Most Talented, Everyday Heroes, Hardest Working, Sporting Legends and Oldest Dogs categories as well as the Overall Winners have now been announced on social media.
Shannon said, “After reading all 550 plus entries, I was blown away by how many of our canine companions are literally saving lives, protecting the community and bringing together people from all walks of life through a common bond and love of dogs. Meeting many of them along the East Coast of Australia and with more states to come, it is very clear that for many Australians, our dogs are more than just pets. They are important members of the family, providing protection, inspiration and companionship, helping people to keep going when times get tough.”
“The judges and I could never have imagined how hard it would be to select just ten finalists, and we will be sharing as many of the stories as we can on social media and other platforms throughout the year to recognise and celebrate the important role dogs play in our lives and the wider community.”
The stories of the Top 10 Finalists for the Most Talented, Hardest Working, Everyday Heroes and Sporting Legends categories, as well as Australia’s Oldest dogs of all shapes and sizes, will be shared in a five-part TV series ‘The Dog Down Under’, airing on Channel 10 from 7 September 2024.
The Overall Winners include:
MOST TALENTED
Bunny, the soulful pianist and singer (NSW)
Bunny, aka Bunsoo the little Boston Terrier, is an incredibly talented pianist and singer. She sings her owners an original composition on the piano every morning and enjoys taking her show on the road to the retirement home, where she swaps her instrument for a keyboard. A video of Bunny’s soulful performance went viral last year, with nearly 7 million views! Bunny is not only a very talented and sweet girl, she’s as cute as a button too. TikTok account: @bunsoobaby.
EVERDAY HERO
Ni nna, the life saver (QLD)
Ninna is a 14-year-old Staffy that plays many roles. She’s a nursing home and mental health ward therapy dog and personal Assistance Dog to her guardian, Alyssa, who writes, “Ninna helps me navigate the world, being my eyes and trusted partner.”
“Ninna tells me when my chemicals are changing due to Septo-optic dysplasia, which caused my blindness. She also saved my life during a traumatic road accident, which saw myself and two others trapped in a car that had rolled over the side of the Killarney Range, Qld, ten years ago, by licking us constantly to keep us conscious and connected. She also helped me to become the first blind person to pursue a dog training career in Australia”.
HARDEST WORKING
Kaos , Queensland Police Dog Hero (QLD)
Kaos has since retired. Living at home with his handler, James, and family, Kaos continues to help raise awareness about the important role Police Dogs play in keeping the community safe. Kaos was based in Brisbane but was deployed across Queensland regional areas, successfully locating and apprehending hundreds of offenders.
In February 2020, PD Kaos was stabbed in the throat while apprehending two serious offenders in North Brisbane, receiving a 12cm deep laceration into his throat, cutting his larynx and oesophagus and missing his carotid artery by millimetres. What makes this story even more incredible is that after sustaining this injury when apprehending the first offender, he was redeployed, apprehending the second offender whilst seriously injured. Kaos required multiple surgeries, but after a few months of recovery, he was able to return to full operational duties. Before his injury, police dogs and horses were only protected under the Queensland Animal Welfare Act. A new law has since been passed to provide additional penalties for police dogs and horses, ensuring Kaos’ legacy lives on.
SPORTING LEGEND
Roxy, the extraordinary dog sledder (SA)
Hurtling down rugged and windy trails at 25-30km/h with sledding teams all around her, the pressure to perform goes beyond just winning for Siberian Husky, Roxy. She has a lot more at stake. Her sled-racing partner and guardian, Lilyana, is legally blind.
In 2022, after spending three weeks on her deathbed in hospital and being diagnosed with an autoimmune disease, Lilyana decided that life was too short not to pursue her passion for dog sledding.
“The level of trust Roxy and I have for one another to keep each other safe is beyond words. It is an incredibly difficult sport to compete in with limited eyesight, but if Roxy thinks I’ve called the wrong turn, she will slow down to give me time to look around, as she knows which way other teams have gone. It’s the little things like this that really solidify my trust in her. Roxy is a very sensitive, well-behaved dog with a heart of gold. I might look after her, but she looks after me more. If it wasn’t for our loving bond, I wouldn’t be able to do the sport we have both come to love so much!”
OLDEST DOG Phil, the 19.5yr ’pirate’ (QLD)
Phil’s tale is a Cinderella story with a fairytale ending. At 13 years of age, Phil found himself at the RSPCA in Perth after experiencing a neglectful home and then navigating some health issues. He spent six months at the shelter, wondering if his forever home would ever come along and give him a second chance at life. Meanwhile, in Brisbane, two Veterinarians, Mina and Anthony, received a call about Phil, as they were looking to adopt a well-mannered senior dog and would have no trouble managing him medically - so the match was perfect!
Phil quickly became a loved family member and shares his home with three children, two cats and another older doggo, Elizabeth. At age 15, Phil sadly developed a very rare form of dry eye in both eyes, resulting in the left eye being surgically removed. Phil enjoys the simple things - cuddles with the family, stealing every toy in the house for himself, day naps, and going for long walks so he can read and reply to his ‘pee mail’. Phil is due to celebrate his 20th birthday this August and is still in excellent health.

Dogs have shared life with human for thousands of years, and we may think we know our canine friends well. However, our animal companions are full of surprises. Read on to learn more about the fascinating history and science of these pets.
“Lap dogs” were once used for personal protection
A recent article in National Geographic explains that the Pekingese dog was originally bred in Imperial China as an “ornamental accessory” for emperors and members of the royal court. The dogs became known as “sleeves” because royals would carry them around in the roomy sleeves of their garments. The dogs would scare off any threat to their owners’ safety, serving as “an ancient Chinese version of mace.”
Dogs can recognise over 150 words
Be careful what you say around your dog - he or she might understand more than you think! Research by Stanley Coren, PhD, of the University of British Columbia, suggests that dogs can understand as many as 250 words, count up to four or five, and understand basic arithmetic. Coren says dogs’ mental abilities are close to those of a child aged two or two and a half. According to Coren, Border Collies, Poodles, and German Shepherds are the most intelligent in the working and obedience categories. Chaser, a Border Collie in South Carolina, reportedly learned over 1,000 nouns; her skills earned her an appearance on NBC’s TODAY Show.
A dog’s nose print is unique, like a human’s fingerprint
According to the U.K.-based International School for Canine Psychology and Behaviour, no two dogs have the same nose print. “Dogs’ nose prints are as unique as a human’s fingerprints and can be used to accurately identify them,”
says an article on the school’s website. A brief paper in Veterinary Quarterly describes how Romanian researchers created a software program allowing them to identify dogs by their nose prints. The paper says the software may be used to identify lost, stolen, or disputed dogs.
The right nose for the job
It’s no secret that dogs have an exceptional sense of smell - 10,000 to 100,000 times better than humans, the PBS show Nova explains on its website. That ability is comparable “to catching a whiff of one rotten apple in two million barrels,” according to one dog scientist. Humans have put dogs’ exceptional noses to work sniffing for drugs. Nova recounts that one sniffer dog ‘found’ a plastic container packed with 35 pounds of marijuana submerged in gasoline within a gas tank.” Dogs have also been trained to sniff for cancer, detect epileptic seizures, and to sniff out low blood sugar levels in diabetics. According to the American Kennel Club, dogs have also been trained to sniff out sewage leaks that could threaten human health.
Petting a dog can lower your blood pressure
Scientists at the University of South Carolina concluded in a 1988 study that talking to and petting a dog can lower a human’s blood pressure and heart rate. Owning a dog may also reduce the risk of heart disease, according to a 2013 article in the Harvard Health Blog. Although there’s no ironclad scientific proof that dog ownership impacts cardiovascular disease rates, an evidence review by the American Heart Association found that dog owners were more likely to exercise, and regular physical activity is key to maintaining a healthy heart.
Puppies have baby teeth
Encyclopaedia Britannica explains that dogs, just like human children, have two sets of teeth: baby teeth and permanent teeth. According to the American Kennel Club, puppy teeth, which can be very sharp, develop when a dog is about three weeks old. When the dog is around four months old, the puppy teeth are replaced by adult teeth, which grow behind the puppy teeth and eventually push them out. Don’t worry about the tooth fairy coming to get your puppy’s teeth; as it says puppies tend to chew and swallow their own baby teeth.
Dogs were venerated in ancient societies
In ancient Egypt, dogs, like cats, were kept as pets. Associated with the dog god Anubis, they were carefully mummified and “buried with great ceremony” when they died, according to the Ancient History Encyclopedia. When a dog died, human family members would shave their entire bodies, including their eyebrows, in a highly visible sign of mourning. Dogs were often buried with their masters so that the two could remain together in the afterlife.
The opposite of a beauty contest
History Extra states that dog owners have entered their canine companions in shows and contests for over 150 years. One contest in Petaluma, California, however, is different - the Sonoma-Marin Fair gives an annual prize for the “World’s Ugliest Dog.” Mugly, a Chinese Crested Dog, won the award in 2012.
Humans have kept pet dogs for at least 14,000 years
According to the Ancient History Encyclopedia, the earliest evidence of people keeping dogs as pets dates back millennia.
The Natufian Grave, a burial site in Israel, is considered the oldest archaeological evidence of domestication; an older man was buried there beside a puppy in 12,000 BCE.
The Epic of Gilgamesh, the oldest story from the Middle East, dated to between 2,150 and 1,400 BCE, describes the goddess Innana travelling with “seven prized hunting dogs in collar and leash.”
Pets IN BUSINESS
A pet-friendly policy could be the boost for a happier and more productive workplace
In recent years, employers are increasingly welcoming pets into the workplace to reduce stress and improve employee retention. After all, studies show pet-friendly companies are more likely to attract, engage and retain employees.1. Pets in the office also improve productivity and collaboration and alleviate employee stress and anxiety with their calming presence.2.
In the lead-up to Take Your Dog to Work Day (June 21), leading national animal welfare charity Companion Animal Network Australia (Australia CAN or CANA) officially launched its Pets in Business program to help employers set-up pet-friendly policies that meet the needs of the business, non-pet owners and pet-owning staff.
“Now more than ever, pets are an integral part of our lives,” says Trish Ennis, CEO of Australia CAN. “With many companies continuing to have employees split their working week between home and the office, it’s no surprise people want to bring their pets to the workplace too.”
Consumer research shows 85%3. of Australian dog owners would go into the office more if they could take their pets. Plus, 63%3. of employees in pet-friendly workplaces are “very satisfied” with their work environment (and that is nearly twice as many as those in workplaces where pets are not allowed).
“With work being a leading source of stress worldwide, employee satisfaction and morale are top-of-mind for most HR leaders, and pet-inclusive policies can help,” says Ms Ennis. However, many workplaces are not prepared to have animals on site, with 64% of workplaces not having policies in place to support pets joining them, according to a global published study* .
“Creating a pet-friendly workplace involves carefully balancing the interests and rights of all employees, ensuring the welfare of the animals and managing the associated liability risks,” says Ms Ennis.
“Plus, not every workplace is suitable for pets; for instance, a warehouse or other area that operates high-risk machinery. Some animals are also prohibited, such as snakes, spiders and uncaged bunnies who can chew up cords!
All pets need to be trained and not cause disruptions, such as reactive dogs that tend to bark at other people or animals.”
CANA’s Pets in Business program provides FREE resources to support the workplace, such as Pet Resume, Pet Friendly Workplace and Pet Free Zone Posters, Rules for Pets and Humans, and Office Pet Roster.
For a donation, CANA can also set up employers with a branded Pets In Business kit that includes rules and regulations that meet the needs of everyone in the workplace. All donations go towards supporting the work of CANA member agencies.
“As some companies struggle to persuade employees to spend more time working onsite, implementing a pet-friendly policy might be the perfect solution for creating happier and more productive workplaces!” says Ms Ennis.
