“It’s a funny world. Last week I was asked by our efficient magazine editor in the office, Ms Barbara Cumming, if I could draft my PM for Dog World this week due to February being a short month. Little did I realize that it would in fact be my last message as the President of Dogs Queensland.

The ballot for the election of 6 directors closed at 5pm last Monday, 20 February 2023 at 5pm. After finalisation by the independent Returning Officer and consideration of the results by the scrutineers the results came through just before 6pm. I was not one of the six.

For those who have not caught up with the election results, the elected directors are as follows: -

• Barb Murfet (Zone 1)

• Tabitha Young (Zone 1)

• Vyvyan Mannion (Zone 1)

• Duncan McAllister (Zone 1)

• Katrina Santas (Zone 2)

• Gordon Mayne (Zone 3)

Congratulations to Mrs Barb Murfet being returned as a director, Mr Gordon Mayne being elected unopposed as the Zone 3 director and Mrs Katrina Santas as the Zone 2 Director. Dog Sports are well represented in this line up with Mrs Barb Murfet being joined by Ms Vyvyan Mannion and Ms Tabitha Young. Congratulations to these ladies and also Mr Duncan McAllister on his re-election after missing out at the election before.

And particular thanks to the other outgoing directors, Miss Ainslie Carius and Mrs Patrice Johansen who have contributed to the good governance of our company, Canine Control Council (Qld) Ltd.

Ainslie’s contribution as a former President and a director, and generally as a member is well known and was recognised not long ago by the conferral of a life membership. She has a magical touch behind the scenes quietly making gala show weekends happen with flair. Her legal background, deep understanding of our wider dog world and common-sense approach

And being a director of our company is all about good governance. We may have a background in dog showing and breeding and/or one or more of our dog sports and come from one of our three Zones but the role of a director is not to just “represent” that dog discipline or the members in just that zone but to look after the interests of all our members and our wider dog world throughout Queensland. The objects of Canine Control Council (Qld) Ltd are set out in our Constitution which you can find on the Dogs Queensland website. Importantly, director duties are mandated under the Corporations Law. It is important that directors understand these duties that include confidentiality, dealing with conflicts of interest and duty and other important obligations.

As those nominating for director positions were advised, ASIC requires a director to apply for and obtain a director number with certain checks being undertaken.

It’s my hope that the new Board will undertake a one-day director training program with Board Matters early in its new term. This has been a very productive exercise in the past.

Let’s remember that we are a member organisation with over 6,200 members. Sadly, only 1269 members voted in this last election down from 1715 members at the election before.

There are many things that I am proud of in my period as President of Dogs Queensland over the last 4 years with two consecutive Boards.

I think that members would appreciate that there have been lots of challenges for Dogs Queensland over the last 4 years. We did hit a low point just over 4 years ago when the then Board advised the members that they were going to buy the former Masters site at Parkinson as our new home and sell the Durack grounds, without a vote of members. Members will recall the wide-ranging concerns expressed about such a step. One very experienced long-standing member of the dog world approached Andrew and me and said that we were the only people who could stop this happening.

In the result, we took steps to convene a Special

General Meeting of members to propose motions that any sale of Durack or purchase of the Masters property had to be approved by members. The members voted overwhelmingly in support of those motions. The Board apparently was concerned about the long-term financial health of Dogs Queensland and were looking to the purchase and sale as a solution. Unfortunately, the business case left a lot to be desired, as was pointed out in an analysis provided to the Board.

This whole process had quite a wounding effect on Dogs Queensland on many fronts and was immediately followed by a fresh election process for 6 directors on the Board. I successfully nominated as a director and to my surprise was elected President by the Board for that 2-year period and again for the last 2 years. It was a matter of rebuilding trust and good outcomes for our dog world whilst maintaining good governance at Board level. There have been considerable challenges along the way, including the Covid19 pandemic, but board decision making has been grounded in an assessment of the facts and where appropriate, legal advice. It has been a priority to keep members informed of important developments. As I joke to people, it has been my “full-time unpaid job”.

There are many things I am proud of during my period with Dogs Queensland. I will simply mention the following:

• Getting our message out to the wider Queensland and Australian community about our wonderful dog world, our many dog activities and the importance of dealing with our reputable breeders. There was particular demand for these messages of course during the Covid period.

• Seeing our wonderful grounds preserved and maintained.

• Those grounds being extended and improved with a big clean-up operation on the Lure Coursing field and the sourcing of a huge amount of quality, certified fill that was levelled by Mr Craig Drury and the Grounds team. Thank you to Craig for the tremendous work he undertook at no cost to Dogs Queensland. The fill was estimated to have a value in excess of $1M and was sourced progressively for just over $100k, including equipment hire.

• Moving from a position of some financial constraint four years ago to one where we have averaged an annual net profit of $500,000 over the last 3 years, resulting in moneys on deposit in excess of $4m.

• Providing financial and in-kind support to members impacted by natural disasters both in Queensland and interstate.

As one of the two Queensland directors on our national body, the Australian National Kennel Council Ltd, I have had a voice on key issues impacting on our dog world and an involvement in the recent launch and marketing of ANKC Ltd as Dogs Australia. Whilst there is lots more to be achieved on that front, I have enjoyed the collegiate approach of that Board and I have been happy to be on its Executive for the last 2 years. Most recently we had a productive meeting on Saturday 11 February 2023 with certain initiatives decided that I will need to step away from progressing.My ANKC Ltd directorship will come to an end with the changeover of our Board after the AGM on Wednesday 29 March 2023. Two new directors will then be nominated by the Dogs Queensland Board.

Many people have contributed to the good outcomes over the last number of years. I would like to thank those people and you, the members, for the support and productive feedback you have provided on many occasions. We have a super Dogs Queensland office, and I would like to specially thank them and in particular, our General Manager, Mr Rob Harrison, for his unfailing professional support to me and to the entire Board.

Wishing you all the best. I have enjoyed making a contribution to Dogs Queensland over the last 10 years.

UPDATED REGULATIONS PART 9 –NON-RESIDENT AND OVERSEAS JUDGES APPLICATION FORM

BORDER COLLIE – BREED EXTENSION UPDATED

The National Breed Standards Coordination Group (NBSCG) received a submission from the National Border Collie Council (Australia) to update the breed standard extension for this breed to bring it in line with the current breed standard.

After reviewing the submission, the NBSCG agreed for the existing breed standard extension on the Dogs Australia website to be replaced with the attached.

DOGS QUEENSLAND – 2023 FLOOD ASSISTANCE

It is believed that some of our clubs/members may have sustained serious property damage as a result the recent rain event in Central Queensland.

Whilst insurance cover may eventually go some way towards replacing the essential items, we also realise that the need for immediate access to funds to ensure that our members’ dogs are kept safe and in good order becomes absolutely critical. The

cost of temporary boarding, feeding, replacement of secure fencing/kennel runs, Veterinary care and transport are all very real expenses confronting our members across the State.

We invite our clubs/members who have been directly affected by this event to apply for immediate financial assistance using the previously established Dogs Queensland Disaster Fund. Please use the attached Dogs Queensland application form to submit your request for assistance and it will be processed as a priority.

MEASURING DOGS POLICY

For disciplines which require the dog to have been measured and issued a height card. The only exemption is Agility which has its own requirements written in the Agility Rules.

Dogs are required to be measured by two officials. Officials consist of:

1. A licensed ANKC judge and

2. Either:

a) Another licensed ANKC judge or

b) A Club Official appointed by that Club

2024 NATIONAL SHOW APPROVAL – BORDER COLLIE CLUB OF QUEENSLAND INC

Dogs Australia has advised Dogs Queensland of an error that occurred in the commencement date for the Border Collie Club of Qld Inc 2024 National Show. Please note the approved dates for this show is 30 August 2024 to 1 September 2024 at the dogs Queensland Sports Grounds, Durack.

Members are also advised of a Restricted to Breed Herding Trial and Restricted to Breed Scent Work Trial to be held on the 29 September 2024.

2024 NATIONAL SHOW/RESTRICTED TRIALS APPROVAL – POODLE CLUB OF VICTORIA INC

Dogs Australia previously advised Dogs Queensland of the approval of the application received from the Poodle Club of Victoria Inc via Dogs Victoria to conduct a National Show with a Restricted Obedience trial to be held on

23 to 24 September 2023 at KCC Park, Skye, Victoria. Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria has confirmed these dates will not clash with the breed judging at the 2023 Royal Melbourne Show.

Members are to note that a Restricted to Breed Rally Trial has been added/incorporated into this event.

RESPIRATORY FUNCTION GRADING SCHEME

Health screening test rolled out for brachycephalic dog breeds.

The University of Cambridge and the Kennel Club (UK) Respiratory Function Grading Scheme provides an assessment for brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome. to objectively measure the severity of brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome in dogs and help make a clinical diagnosis.

The objectives of the scheme in Australia are:

• To identify dogs at risk/subject to BOAS to allow for the best care and treatment for managing such conditions.

• To give the breeder/owner the best available information in terms of the appropriateness of using a dam/sire in a breeding program.

• To give other breeders the information resource of dogs affected and unaffected by BOAS to allow for the selection of the most suitable stock for breeding purposes.

• To provide data and statistics in terms of BOAS to monitor the frequency and progress in the breed affected for ongoing research for the overall improvement of the relevant breeds.

Health screening test rolled out for brachycephalic dog breeds.

The University of Cambridge and the Kennel Club (UK) Respiratory Function Grading Scheme provides an assessment for brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome to objectively measure the severity of brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome in dogs and help make a clinical diagnosis. The intent of the scheme is also to improve understanding of the condition, increase awareness, and ultimately reduce the incidence of BOAS, the scheme has been accepted widely around the world as a viable way of repeatable way of grading dogs for respiratory function.

Dogs Australia (ANKC) with its affiliated State and Territory Members Bodies is the peak body in Australia responsible for Registered Pure Bred dogs and is a not-for-profit organisation advocating for the preservation of purebred dogs through ethical breeding. dedicated to promoting the health and welfare of companion animals through a reduction in the incidence of genetic disease, joined this international effort just prior to COVID and after being delayed by the pandemic is currently rolling out the RFG Scheme in Australia.

As part of its agreement with the Kennel Club, Dogs Australia has appointed Dr. Arthur House BSc BVMS Ph.D. Cert SAS DECVS as Australia's Chief Assessor for the RFG Scheme, an internationally recognized specialist small animal surgeon in both Australia and Europe Arthur recently visited the UK to be briefed on the supervision of the Scheme by Dr. Jane Ladlow the Cambridge University Principal Investigator into Non-invasive Assessment of Respiratory Function in Unrestrained Conscious Brachycephalic Dogs Pre and Post Upper Airway Surgery. Dr. Ladlow gave evidence in the case at which the Norwegian Court of appeal overturned the Bulldog breeding ban.

Dr. House is currently training veterinarians to become approved assessors to carry out respiratory function grading, a number have already been trained and appointed in Victoria, Queensland, and South Australia, and in conjunction with the State and Territory Member Bodies, training will take place in other states in coming months. The response to the launch of the RFG Scheme in Australia has been excellent and the National British Bulldog Breed Council is instituting respiratory function grading as one of its health screening tests.

Member’s Tale Heart Dog Saxon

I often hear people say “he is my heart dog” –here is the tale of a true one.

On 20 June 2022 I was sitting at the computer when I felt a dull pain in my chest, started to perspire profusely and lost some of my sight. I made my way to my bedroom and laid on the bed. Saxon, my English Setter, who NEVER gets on the bed when I am there jumped up and laid across my chest banging his head up and down. I grabbed my phone, called triple zero and the ambulance arrived within 15 minutes. Saxon then got off the bed and sat at the foot watching. I was rushed to hospital and was there for 3 days.

When I came home the first thing Saxon did was put his head on my chest – a ritual he now does every morning when I wake up, then gives me a lick and wags his tail.

Even the ambulance crew said he was doing CPR and probably saved my life.

So do not misjudge an English Setter – they are certainly NOT dumb. He truly is my ‘Heart dog’!

To all my friends who have supported me over the last 8 months I thank you from the bottom of my heart, which is still beating better than it has for years.

A LITTLE HISTORY OF THE BOSTON TERRIER

The big little dog, affectionately known as the American Gentleman, has come a long way in the last 100 years – in fact, in just 25 years, particularly when it comes to education of this tuxedo coated dapper little dog

There are few dogs, having the disposition of the Boston Terrier. Their kind and gentle disposition have won them the name of the American Gentleman, a name rightfully given, and as companions or house pets, they have few equals. Breeders must take great care in the selection of breeding stock, as the future of the breed lies in the careful breeding of our present generation.

Much progress has been accomplished in the breed since the year 1900 in the developing of different strains by scientific breeding, and some inbreeding, that has produced some very fine dogs, with clean cut short heads, snow white markings, dark soft eyes and the happy medium body leaning more to the Terrier that the Bulldog.

The question is often asked, “How did the Boston Terrier originate?” Briefly stated it may be said to have resulted from a cross between the English Bulldog and the white English Terrier, and then to have been considerably inbred. Incidental peculiarities of the first dogs used as sires are partly responsible for the present type.

...Mr. Robert C. Hooper, of Boston came into possession of a dog named Judge. This dog, which he purchased of Mr. William O’Brien of the same city, was undoubtedly imported from England. Judge, commonly known as Hooper’s Judge, was destined to be the ancestor of almost all the true modern Boston Terriers. He was a cross between an English Bulldog and a white English Terrier. He was a strongly built, high stationed dog of about thirtytwo pounds weight. In colour he was a dark brindle, with a white stripe in the face. His head was square and blocky, and he resembled the present Boston Terrier in that he had a nearly even mouth. Judge was bred to Burnett’s Gyp (or Kate). Gyp was a white bitch, owned by Mr. Edward Burnett, of Southboro, MA. She was of about twenty pounds weight, had a fine three-quarter tail, and was quite low stationed. She was of stocky build, showing considerable strength in her make-up. Her head was good, being short and blocky.

...From Judge and Gyp descended Well’s Eph. This dog was of strong build, and like his dam was low stationed. His weight was about twenty-eight pounds. He was of dark brindle color, even white markings, and like Judge, had a nearly even mouth.

...Eph was mated with Tobin’s Kate. This bitch was of small size, weighing only twenty pounds. She had a fairly short head, was of golden brindle color, and had a straight three-quarter tail.”

From these dogs it can be traced to the start of the Breed, the Boston Terrier.

Dogs were bred and exhibited by these Fanciers as Round Heads and as time went on these Fanciers met with numerous obstacles, but they would not give up after years of hard work. In 1891, the Boston Terrier Club of America was organized and being a Boston bred dog the name was changed from the Round Heads, to the Boston Terrier.

In the year 1893 occurred the most momentous event in the history of the Boston Terrier. After two years of trying to have the breed recognized, The American Kennel Club admitted the breed to recognition for registration in the Stud Book, and the Club as a member of the American Kennel Club.

THE BOSTON TERRIER IN A NUTSHELL

The Boston Terrier standard has undergone many changes over the years in its Country of Origin –USA. The thing that never changes is the fact that this American Gentleman should be seen as a clean cut, short backed bodied dog, coupled with the unique characteristics of his square head and jaw, and his striking markings have resulted in a most dapper and charming American original.

He is a smooth coated, compact, well balanced dog built with a series of ‘squares.’ The head is square, the body is square, the eye placement is wide and is set square into the skull as well as forming a square with the strong small ears. The outside corners of the eyes are on a line with the cheeks when viewed from the front. His bite is sufficiently undershot to square the muzzle – so how undershot is acceptable? As long as the teeth don’t show and as long as you have a square jaw, it is up to your interpretation. Personally, I still like to see a wide straight regular undershot bite and no repandous upswept jaw like a Bulldog as this would indicate a rounded mouth which does not allow a squared jaw making him more ‘Boxer-like’.

The expression should indicate a high degree of intelligence with those beautiful large round dark eyes that pull you in with a kindly look. Although many times showing disgust in what you might be expecting them to do or making you feel guilty with a look of ‘how could you?’ – which they are masters of. Part of his attractive look is completed with his colour and markings. Often referred as black and white, the correct colour is brindle – ranging from light golden brindle to dark seal brindle. Often a light brindle puppy will darken and a seemingly black puppy, will develop the red golden sheen within his colouring as he grows and develops. We are often told that a dog that looks black will show his red golden sheen when a piece of black velvet is placed alongside the coat.

Markings are often a hot topic of debate with breeders and judges. Essentially all a Boston needs to fulfil the standard is the white muzzle band, white blaze between the eyes and white forechest – AND THAT IS IT as ‘Required markings’. The white collar, white on part or whole of forelegs and hindlegs below the hocks are simply – the icing on the cake.

Majority of other points are standard – a good length and crest of neck to ensure the breed is a Boston and doesn’t look French Bulldog like, good chest, straight front legs, good spring of rib, good tight feet, well-muscled angulated hindquarters and above all, a clean cut outline.

Topline is another contentious feature of the Boston Terrier. The topline is level and curves slightly to the set on of tail which is set low. The breed does not have a roach and the curve comes from the rump not the back. The topline is finished off with a short, fine and tapering, straight or screw tail. It is important that no part of the tail is carried above the horizontal as this spoils the outline.

Movement varies around the world as to how the Boston is presented in the show ring. Like most breeds, there should be no paddling or hackney gait. The Boston should present itself as a sure footed, straight gaited dog, moving with grace and power. The legs do not lift of the ground and should have good reach and drive. He is not a wind-up toy but should still have a style of high order.

Lastly but definitely not least is Temperament. As one of the world’s top ranking family pets, the Boston must have a friendly disposition and should be full of intelligence. Boston’s make a great couch dog, lap dog, companion, Obedience/ Agility/Flyball competitor, boating and surfing/ SUP companion, fancies himself as a farm dog and has even been known to be seen in the cockpit with his pilot owner. He is the ultimate and incomparable companion for all ages and members of the family. Above all, he is most happy when he is with you doing what you are doing.

Whether your Boston is a show dog and/or family pet, please remember, that at the end of the day, this is a brachy breed. So, as it should be with any dog, do not walk or run your Boston in the heat of the day and in Summer, don’t take your Boston out between the hours of 10am and 6pm and keep him in a cool environment. But be warned, when things cool down, witching hour starts and every toy will be brought out of the toy box or, if they have access, will sit and look at the door and lead insisting that you take them out.

Oh and they are collictable! Once you get one, you will never stop.

YOU WANT TO BUY A BOSTON TERRIER PUPPY

While Boston Terriers make a wonderful pet and are always in high demand with both families that have owned and loved the breed before or to the new owner that has researched the breed, you need to plan and get to know the breeders to find the perfect match for you.

Due to the health issues, whelping issues and small gene pool, breeding Boston’s is not for the faint hearted. Due to the popularity of the breed, the normal ‘waiting’ time for your puppy can be up to 12 months or more. Plus, it is pertinent to keep in mind that with the number of enquiries breeders get, not all breeders keep a waiting list.

The keen passionate potential owners that keep abreast of things and keep in the loop with breeders themselves on a regular basis, are more

likely to get their prized Boston puppy.

So why is it that there are not many available each year?

One of the biggest commitments from reputable breeders around the world, is on health, soundness, and health testing. The dedicated and committed breeder will only breed from health tested and cleared stock.

So before you purchase your puppy – we recommend that you check with the breeder for the certification that the sire and dam are clear of the health issues that many breeders worldwide are fighting to eradicate from the breed. Even the puppy you have purchased should come with certificates in eyes and patella’s if possible (due to location of the breeder, this may not always be possible). Just ensure the sire and dam have had relevant testing as a base minimum.

So, what does this mean? Here are some of the very costly tests breeders should try to invest in before they even breed from their dogs or bitches, or even before they sell any puppies:

DNA testing for Juvenile Cataracts – this involves taking swabs from the dogs, purchasing the special packs from reputable facilities and sending the swab off to be tested and recorded on the DNA database. This can be done with breeding stock and puppies from 8 weeks (as they have to be microchipped first).

BOAS Testing (Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome) – from a reputable tester for the parents.

Patella testing – preferably by a registered specialist in small animal surgery, This check and grading can also be done with x-rays through the Breeders veterinary clinic.

Eye Checks – by registered specialist opthalmologists for animals. Some breeders have new puppies checked by one of these specialists before they go to their new homes and provide certificates as to the condition of the pup’s eyes for divergence, cataracts etc.

Some breeders also do Hip, Spinal, Trachea and Heart testing. BAER (deafness) testing is also recommended, but as we only have one tester

available at Massey University, it is not always possible to have this done.

So as you can see, a great deal of investment goes into ensuring Boston Terriers as a breed are healthy and sound, and as such, due to the small gene pool, breeders have also had to import a lot of stock and frozen semen from health tested breeders from around the world.

If you are keen on purchasing a Boston Terrier puppy, you can not expect to ring a breeder and have one available immediately, as a Christmas present or birthday present next month – because chances are, that just isn’t going to happen.

Just as breeders plan carefully any litters they breed, so must any potential owner of this amazing little breed plan to work hard on a breeder to show that you are going to provide a fantastic home and continue the love, commitment and investment into your puppy that has in turn gone into bringing it into this world.

Oh and the best advice we can give you…… do not get a Boston unless you want a devoted house dog and companion – Boston Terriers are not an outside dog.

As breeders of a brachy breed in this current climate, we owe it to the preservation and future of the Boston Terrier to do all we can to show an enduring commitment to proving and improving on the health, soundness and welfare of this wonderful breed.

Spotlight On Junior Handlers

Over the Festive Fiesta cluster of shows and the recent Beenleigh Districts & Kennel Club Inc shows Cotonrun was blessed with some wonderful memories.

On the first evening of the Festive Fiesta

‘Junior Handlers’ competition Nevada Appleby (7 to under 10) and 10-year-old Lexi Holmes (10 to under 13) came looking for a challenge, wanting to handle a Toy breed in their ‘Junior Handler’ categories. Lexi took charge of Carbonebianco Jasper (HRV.JR.CH) and Nevada handled Carbonebianco Honey (CH) –both excelled.

There were no statues going through the motions, instead the girls expertly handled the boys work in the ring. We saw that worldfamous happy Coton de Tulear’s temperament on show along with other world-famous attributes – their flowing cotton coat, light airy gait, arched top line and dark pigmented lips,

nose, eye liner and pads.

It has been an absolute joy to watch these talented young girls bringing out the very best in Honey and Jasper, exhibiting that important harmonic relationship between dog and handler that must be present in the ring despite not having a pre-existing relationship. Along the way they’ve taught me a few tips as well.

I’d like to extend a heart-felt congratulations to Nevada who, with only 18-months experience, won her ‘Junior Handler’ class three nights in a row and Best of Breed at the Open Show on 30 December 2022 and Champion Show 1 January 2023, with Honey at Festive Fiesta. At the Beenleigh Districts & Kennel Club Inc she won her ‘Junior Handler’ class and Best of Breed in the Champion show under Mr Ian Rasmussen.

Another heart-felt congratulations to Lexi, the youngest competitor in her ‘Junior Handler’ group, who skilfully won Best of Breed on Friday

30 and Saturday 31 December 2022 over the Festive Fiesta Shows with Jasper.

We can’t wait to see what these two ‘Junior Handlers’ achieve in the future and look forward to being part of it.

And congratulations to Tiny Tots handler, 6-yearold Charlie Shannon who had a wonderful time with Cotonrun Sippin on Rose’ (who is the daughter of Carbonebianco Quantana (HRV. JR.CH. ROM.JR.CH), and Carbonebianco Jasper (right). Rose’, having won Best of Breed Thursday 29 December 2022 and multiple Runnerup of Breed continued to strut her stuff in the ring, demonstrating that happy Coton temperament with her wagging tail, while taking good care of Charlie.

It’s clear Charlie and Rose’ enjoyed themselves: “I didn’t need to be in the ring…next time they can go in by themselves,” said Rose’s mum Gabby Carter.

A big thank you to all the judges who were part of this wonderful experience.

Queensland Trick Dog Judges introduce Tasmania to Trick Dog Tests

Recently, two Queensland Judges, Director Barbara Murfet and Dances With Dogs (DWD)/ Trick Dog Sub-Committee Chair Coral Pethers, travelled to Launceston to officiate at the inaugural Tasmanian Trick Dog Tests.

In October last year Coral was invited to Launceston to conduct a two day workshop on the relatively new sport of Trick Dogs. During the course of the workshop a mock test was conducted with some 33 handlers and their dogs. It was from this exposure to the sport that the Canine Performance Association of Tasmania invited Barbara and Coral to judge an official Dogs Tasmania Trick Dog Test consisting of four separate Tests.

While the organizers expected some 20 entries, they actually received 47 for each test which was conducted over 2 days. The venue for the competition was Quercus Park – an agricultural display precinct some 20 minutes south west

of Launceston – where there are three irrigated grass rings developed for Conformation Show judging. These proved perfect for setting out the two Trick Dog Test areas needed.

Saturday morning saw handlers on site early to set up their gazebos, settle their nerves and get their dogs ready for the big event. A Director of Dogs Tasmania – Mrs Tul Luttrell – was on hand to read a welcoming message from the President of the State body Mr David Sales, and the Judges and Stewards were introduced prior to the event commencing. The Test Manager was Mrs Lani Smith – the Chair of the Herding Sub Committee in that State.

After two days, four tests, and some 14 hours of judging for each judge overall, there were some very happy competitors who received the first 28 titles to be issued in Trick Dogs at Starter Level in Tasmania. In all, 120 qualifying certificates were handed out with three competitors receiving the

top score of 60 out of 60 and several getting in the 58-59 region.

Judges were impressed with the overall standard of performances especially considering the sport was totally new to the State. Organisers, competitors and Judges all went home very happy with the two day event – though all were a little weary and slightly sunburnt after the perfect weather experienced.

The Dogs Queensland Dances With Dogs (DWD) and Tricks Subcommittee will be conducting Trick Dog Tests on 5 March 2023 at Caboolture and 1 July 2023 at the Durack Sports Grounds.

Reducing And Recognising Stress In Dogs

Stress and stress situations are not restricted to any one particular breed. It is one of the most debilitating diseases a dog has to handle.

The problem of stress can be linked to many training and behavioural methods. It can be linked to man’s misunderstanding of what makes his or her dog tick.

It is something that almost every dog will suffer from at some stage of its life, and will certainly be at different levels – some with very small stress situations and others, unfortunately, will live with stress possibly forever.

The Positive Method of training, can in many ways reduce the level of stress for the dog, but often even the most positive method can produce stress levels. Fear, anxiety and confusion are the instigators of stress, and these can occur even with the best of intentions.

Of course physical problems can also create stress. Ageing, poor diet, illness, heat waves, very cold spells can all add stress at a physical level. Mental stress can cause physical traits. These can usually be diagnosed fairly easily nad can include loss of appetite, diarrhea,

loss of energy, a temperature and fits of depression. “My dog is just not itself” is a common comment from the owner.

SOME SIGNS OF STRESS OF A MENTAL BASED STRESSED SITUATION

To identify stress in our dogs, we need to look at the whole dog.

1. Are his ears back?

2. Are his pupils dilated?

3. Is its tail down and under?

4. Is its body lowered (as though it is cowering)?

5. Is it sweating through its paws?

6. Is it panting rapidly with the corner of the mouth back?

7. Does it tremble when you take it out for a training session?

8. Is its body hard?

9. Is it shedding hair or dandruff ?

10. Is it vocalising by whining, or repetitious barking?

11. Scratching?

15. Avoiding eye contact?

The above are some of the things that denote stress in our dogs. You may know of others.

VOCALIZATION

This barking, whining, can be caused by different stress situations. The owner has gone and left the dog alone. The dog finds that by barking it releases the endorphin in the brain which gives it a sense of calm. It can be the dogs’ way of covering up an unpleasant situation. People who have to work through the day, often have a barking dog, which then becomes the neighbourhood menace. These owners then have to look for alternate ways to reduce the stress in their dog which has been created by being left alone. They have to provide their pooch with an alternative, and a feeling of security.

PANTING

If the weather is cool (not hot) and you see a lot of panting and drooling from the dog , this can be stress related. Remember though, panting is natural for the dog which has just been exercised, or excited in some way. Even after light training the dog may naturally pant. However, this should be not excessive or cause drooling.

SWEATY PAWS

If you see wet foot prints across your floor and it’s not raining outside, or your dog has not just put his feet in a bucket of water to cool off, remember this can be a sign of stress in your dog.

HARD BODY

If you put your hands on your dog and it feels very hard, or you watch your dog move across an area and it appears very tense or if the jaws appear clenched, these can all be signs of stress in the dog.

SHEDDING HAIR OR DANDRUFF

These occur when the body is tense from stress. Of course dogs shed hair at other times. During winter to summer, hair comes off. An extremely hot bout of weather can often make a dog shed. This is normal. The stressed dog sheds hair at times when it is not normal for the dog to shed coat.

DILATION OF THE EYES

This is a dead give away of stress. If the light is

normal, but you see your dog with obviously dilated eyes, you can be pretty sure something is stressing him/her.

The natural instincts of a dog are Fight, Flight, Bite and Hunt.

Some dogs will show they are stressed by freezing in one spot. It can be fear which has caused the stress. Fighting can be caused by stress. Unsocialized dogs find it very hard to communicate in an appropriate manner when confronted by other dogs. They stress. Then fight. Flight. How many times has your dog run away from you or from a stressful situation? Biting. Dogs will bite when frightened or stressed. There is no such thing as a dog which will not bite given the provocation of stress or indeed any other reason which promotes provocation.

Look to yourself as the owner on every occasion your dog show signs of stress, and work out what is causing the stress to build in your dog.

SCRATCHING

If the dog, on a sit or down stay scratches, don’t automatically think it has fleas. No, most times it is stress related. The dog needs to have confidence in you the owner that you are going to return to it, and that there is nothing for it to be concerned about.

YAWNING

Like sniffing, the dog will yawn. It’s not tired. It is stressed. Of course dogs yawn and scratch when they are bored, tired or just plain itchy. You must understand and read the difference.

SHAKING OFF

Not after a swim or something of like ilk. Relief can

be achieved by the dog from a stress situation by Shaking. Calm them down by stroking backwards. A long firm stroke is required here. Go the full length of the dogs body several times. This disturbing of the coat will cause the dog to give a good shake, but the actual stroking will calm the dog down.

WHAT CAN WE DO TO REMOVE STRESS?

CALMING SIGNALS

Calming signals are a wonderful way to alleviate the stress in the dog. There is a small book written by a Norwegian called The Work of Turid Rugaas Calming Signals. She tells of several ways you can recognise and give calming signals to the dog.

Some signs of calming you will see in dogs are:Turning the head away from another dog which wants to confront it. You can do this to your dog when you want to diffuse a situation as well.

MOVING IN AN ARC

Normally when dogs approach each other they very rarely approach nose to nose. They will move in an arc or curved line, and walk past the nose to sniff rear ends while standing side to side. This is very common particularly in the Border Collie or any of the working breeds.

MOVING SLOWLY

If a dog wants to give signals to another dog when it sees it, if normally starts to move slower. This slow movement is a calming signal on its own. “I don’t want to worry you or cause you concern, I am no threat to you.” We can use this signal for calming often. Approach a dog you don’t know or you are concerned about in a slow walk, but positively. Don’t slink along as though you are afraid. This movement could have the opposite effect to the one desired.

Watch, when a young dog or an inexperienced dog bounds up to another dog, possibly wanting to play, but not giving the calming signals first – there can be a problem. The dog which is being approached in this boisterous manner can see this as a threat, and treat the situation accordingly. We can now have a brawl on our hand. All because the calming signal wasn’t given first.

FREE RUNNING AREAS

Ever wondered why there are very few altercations in a ‘leash-free’ area where the dogs are running about. This is because of several reasons, but mostly

because the dog is stress free. It does not have an owner standing over it, lead in hand all the time. It is now free to give to those other dogs, the body language required to diffuse most situations. Of course there are always exceptions to every rule, and you may come across a dog that is a natural bully, and lets fly at anything that is there. Normally, however the dogs will run freely together. Sit and watch their body language as it can be fascinating. They play, bow, jump on each other without aggression, and just naturally run and play. It is very good for the dogs to be able to interact with one another, without human intervention. It is great socializing, especially for the dog which is heavily into Obedience work. It relieves many different forms of stress in a natural way. You will possibly have more dramas from the humans within this ‘leash-free’ area. They can often be difficult to handle, particularly if they feel their dog can never do anything wrong.

AVERTING EYES OR BLINKING

Any experienced handler will tell you that it is easier to gain a dogs confidence, especially when it is worried, by avoiding direct eye contact. An even better method is to turn the head or even the body away from the dog. You can even go as far as turning the side or back to the dog. Slitting of eyes is common when one dog confronts another. This can also be a calming signal. Don’t make a mistake and misread it.

LIP LICKING

When the dog is stressed it will often give a quick little flick with the tongue. We often miss this little sign, but it is the dogs way of saying calm down to everybody.

Removing the cause of the dogs stress is of course the answer. Sounds easy. It is if we know why the dog is stressed. We really have to have a wonderful relationship with our pet, and have bonded with it and understand it totally, before we find relieving stress easy. It’s not an easy thing to do. However often stress can be alleviated by removing the cause of the stress. For example:- The dog who barks every time the children next door come out into their yard. Ever watched those children. They may be poking sticks or hands over the fence, causing your dog to stress.

You can’t remove the children, so you have to move your dog away. Bring him in when the children are outside. The dog will be happy as it’s now inside

with you. If you are outside working in your garden, put the dog on a lead and stake him out next to you. He’ll be happy to be next to your side while you work anyhow.

The dog who barks as soon as you leave for work... Sometimes just changing your pattern of leaving will stop the stress from developing. Change when you pick up your car keys, leave by the back door instead of the front, stop saying goodbye to the dog, anything that has formed a pattern of leaving may need to be changed. We are creatures of pattern, so we may need to look hard at just how we do leave. Think about it, you will possibly solve your own problems if you start to think DOG.

Lots and lots of things that happen daily in our own lives, as well as in the lives of our dogs are stress related. Sometimes, it is easy to call things that happen, stressful. It is a term, I believe, that often is very loosely used.

If we remain calm, confident and above all quiet in the manner in which we deal with things, then our stress will be less, and its amazing, but so will the dogs level of stress drop.

When we yell all our commands to our dogs, dogs like people can develop selective hearing. Remember, a dogs’ hearing is so much better than ours, but we continually speak or yell loudly in the presence of our dogs. THEY DON’T NEED US TO DO THIS. A quiet word will get us a much better response from the dog and will lower, not only our blood pressure, but everyone else around us also.

There is so much that can be written on this subject, but I hope this small amount may give someone out there a little hope and understanding when dealing with stress related dog issues.

Breeder Alert –Puppy Scam Websites

Dogs Queensland has become increasingly aware of Puppy Scam Websites using legitimate Dogs Queensland Registration and Queensland Breeder Identification (BIN) Numbers to sell puppies. Dogs Queensland Registration Numbers are obtained from legitimate websites such as Dogs Queensland or DogzOnline, where they are displayed as required by the Queensland Government.

Please see the Queensland Dog Breeder Fact Sheets for regulations and guidelines for Queensland Dog Breeders.

An example of a typical scam is:

• A Dogs Queensland Membership number is lifted from current advertising on the internet.

• The scammer researches and obtains personal details of the breeder including name, suburb, prefix.

• A domain name similar to the Kennel prefix is registered on an offshore registry.

• Once the breeder has ceased advertising the litter of puppies a new website is published.

• No physical address or phone numbers are advertised on the website.

• The seller avoids permitting you to physically see the cyber puppy and only sends non genuine pictures.

• The seller insists on only accepting payment by a crypto currency or a funds transfer.

As a breeder what can you do to avoid being an unknowing victim of a Puppy Scam:

• Put a warning notification in your online advertising to alert buyers to check any website they are looking at is legitimate.

• Encourage puppy buyers to verify breeder information with Dogs Queensland and make direct inperson contact with you.

• Ensure puppy buyers check communications are made with verified contact details.

• Encourage puppy buyers to meet the puppy and breeder before handing over payments.

As a buyer what can you do to avoid being a victim of a Puppy Scam:

• Verify breeder information with Dogs Queensland.

• Ensure communications are made to verified contact details.

• Meet the puppy and breeder before handing over payments.

• If paying online, use a credit card or PayPal where you have a degree of buyer protection.

• Check website is an established site with a website security certificate.

• Avoid websites without physical address or phone numbers.

• A sk for proof, including ANKC registration papers and veterinary health records for any puppy. Importantly you should report any suspect sites or advertising to the ACCC ScamWatch website. Please let us know about any suspect websites too by contacting Dogs Queensland on 3252 2661 or by email at info@dogsqueensland.org.au.
