So, have you made a will?

Members may think that this is an odd question to be asking but it is an important question to consider. The New Year is a time of making resolutions and “getting your house in order” and ensuring that there is a will in place that states your wishes should be a part of that too. It’s also a question to ask your family and friends. And being “dog people” we have special responsibilities on that front.

I was recently listening to an ABC radio interview of a solicitor who stated that a study had shown that only one in every two Australians have made a will. That’s a pretty alarming situation.

So, what is involved in making a will?

You meet with your solicitor to discuss your situation and can let him or her know what you would like to provide in your will. These would include the following:-

• Who you would like to appoint as executor or executors of your will. This will be the person or persons responsible for carrying out the wishes contained in your will. The executors are responsible for paying all the debts and taxes out of your estate and distributing your estate in accordance with the provisions contained in your will.

• The appointment of guardians for any young children.

• We generally all have dogs, and it is important to make provision for their care and to state your intentions in that regard.

• To name the key beneficiaries of your estate.

• Considering any particular gifts or bequests to friends or family.

President’s Message
4 DOG WORLD February 2023

• Any provision you would like to make to a charity or other organisation that is important to you.

• Express your wishes about funeral arrangements.

The solicitor will then prepare a will in accordance with your instructions and will then make an appointment for you to attend the office and sign the will in the presence of two independent witnesses. Your original will can then be held in their security area. If you don’t have a solicitor you can ring the Queensland Law Society on 1300 367 757 and ask for a recommendation of a solicitor skilled in this field in your area. There is a cost with the solicitor but it is a good investment.

An alternative is to use the free will making service with the Public Trustee of Queensland. If you go down that track you can name your own executor rather than naming the Public Trustee as executor. That is a really good option. The Public Trustee previously charged a percentage of the value of the estate for administering it but now charges for the time expended in administration.

So, what happens if you or someone close to you dies without a will?

It is said that you or they have died intestate and the Public Trustee takes over the administration of your estate unless someone else applies to the Supreme Court of Queensland for what is called Letters of Administration. That deals with the administration of the estate.

Who benefits under the estate where there is no will?

The Queensland Rules on Intestacy are set out in the Succession Act 1981 and the Second Schedule is the law on this. This schedule follows my message and it sets out clearly who will benefit. It is interesting reading. Issue are children and there are set allocations for a widow or widower, any children, surviving parents and next of kin.

If you have not made a will and you are not survived by issue, by a parent or next of kin then your estate goes to the Crown i.e the State Government.

I hope this message highlights for you the importance of anyone over 18 years making a will. And for those of you who have a will do remember that it is important to have it updated as your circumstances change e.g getting married or entering a de facto relationship.

I have always been interested in Succession Law and estate administration. Most recently the concern about the impact of not having a will was brought home to me. An Australian friend living overseas recently died intestate and I am assisting the overseas lawyers in the complexity of obtaining relevant documents here. Complexities that simply would not have happened had a will been made.

Wishing you and your families all the best in 2023.

GOLDEN RETRIEVER

The Golden Retriever is overall a confident, effortless and methodical worker and not a racehorse .... a dog for all seasons and a dog for all reasons.

Breed Feature 8 DOG WORLD February 2023

– The Golden Retriever Club of Queensland, compiled

The Golden Retriever is beautiful, smart, athletic, gentle and kind. Whilst originally bred to be Gundogs, their intelligence supports a versatility which enables them to accommodate anything their masters’ desire – be it Obedience, Conformation, Working, Agility, assisting the blind and the deaf, therapy, search and rescue, drug detection and a myriad of other skills. Golden Retrievers have the ability to excel in one or many of these endeavours.

OVERVIEW

As quoted in the Golden Retriever Breed Extension, the first impression of a Golden Retriever should convey that of an unexaggerated, medium sized, balanced, powerful and active Gundog.

The head and his kindly expression are key breed characteristics. Any unprovoked aggression or timidity to either humans or dogs, be it in the show ring or general community, is totally unacceptable and should be severely penalised. His neck is a key visual guide to overall balance. It flows smoothly into the dog’s correctly laid shoulders with no abrupt angles or dips. The Golden Retriever’s forelegs should be set well under the body.

He is short coupled and deep through the heart. The topline appears absolutely level when standing or moving. Well bent stifles and a short distance between the hock and the ground will help create the desired movement.

The feet of the Golden Retriever are cat like, with a correct slope of pastern for shock absorbency. The tail, which is heavily muscled at the base, is set level to the back and is a continuation of the spine, which enhances the level topline.

The Golden Retriever is overall a confident, effortless and methodical worker and not a racehorse. The coat is also a characteristic of the breed. A thick water resistant undercoat is essential and provides protection for the dog in all weather conditions and swimming – it should never hide the outline of the dog. A long silky setter-like coat is not typical of this breed.

Finally, a Judge should be no way influenced by a personal preference of colour and always be mindful of colour allowance in the breed.

Here is what the founder of the UK Golden Retriever Club, Mrs Charlesworth, had to say in 1932 “Breeders should concentrate on sound dogs fore and aft, good second thighs, strong hocks, good shoulders well laid back, long necks, powerful loins, short backs, broad heads and a strong foreface. Lucky is the breeder who gets one perfect specimen in a lifetime.”

THE HISTORY OF THE GOLDEN RETRIEVER

We are most fortunate that there is a documented history of the Golden Retriever breed thanks to the tireless work of many, not least Mrs Elma Stonex, of Dorcas Kennels in the UK, who spent 10 years researching and then finally dispelling a myth that the Golden Retrievers came from Russian Circus Dogs.

It was in 1864 that the foundation dog of the Golden Retriever breed was born.Dudley Coutts Marjoribanks (DCM), the first Lord Tweedmouth, was walking in a field in Brighton England and chanced upon a yellow wavy haired retriever and offered to buy it from its owner, a pedlar.

Apparently, the pedlar had received it from a keeper of Lord Chichester in payment of a

9 DOG WORLD February 2023

debt. DCM took the dog ‘Nous’ to his beautiful country estate “Guisachan” in Scotland. The Golden Retriever fraternity is lucky that DCM kept accurate records of all his matings so we know that Nous was put to a now extinct Tweed Water Spaniel, which he had obtained from his cousin, David Robertson, who had lived on the Scottish borders in a village named Ladykirk. It was in 1868 that the first litter was born.

Puppies were named Primrose, Cowslip and Crocus. Lord Tweedmouth continued to record all his matings until 1890, a few years before his death.

(The record book can be viewed at the Kennel Club in London). It is interesting to note that when the breed first began, all the dogs were jealously guarded by members of the aristocracy and landed gentry. They were never sold, only given away to close family and friends.

It was in 1908 that the first Golden Retrievers were exhibited by Lord Lewis Harcourt. Mrs Charlesworth of the famous Noranby Kennel

began a fledgling Club in the UK in 1911 but it was not until 1913 that The Golden Retriever Club was officially recognised by the Kennel Club.

A detailed account of the Foundation of the Golden Retriever at Guisachan features on pages 16-19.

INTRODUCTION OF GOLDEN RETRIEVERS INTO AUSTRALIA

The first documented evidence of a Golden Retriever in Australia was in 1937 with the registration in Victoria of ‘Grakle of Tone’ bred by Miss F. Newton-Deakin of Dorset England. His owner was Miss Grice, who lived at Mt Macedon –the property was destroyed by bushfires in 1983.

Also arriving at the same time was a bitch named Temeraire, who was to become the breed’s first Champion in Australia. At that time, there was cooperation with folk from New Zealand, who had introduced Golden Retrievers in 1925. In the early 1950’s, Alexander of Arbrook and Krystina of Kuldana were imported into South Australia from England by Mrs Arnfield.

10 DOG WORLD February 2023

Patroness, Mrs Elsie Dodd, was the first to bring Golden Retrievers into Queensland after emigrating from the UK in 1953. It is interesting to note that when she entered Ch Molyneux Gina Edwina (Imp UK) for the first time at the Brisbane Royal in 1954, her Golden Retriever was classified as AOV (Any Other Variety).

Mrs Dodd refused to leave the ring until her beloved Golden Retrievers were classified as a separate breed. Mr Spencer from Harkaway in Victoria, imported from the UK in 1954 two very high quality Goldens, those being Boltby Comet and Halsham Hazel. These Goldens founded the famous Bonspiel Kennel. Highly respected All Breeds Judge from NSW, Mr Bob Philp, purchased two bitches from this mating – Bonspiel Goldgleam and Bonspiel Goldglint. Luckily, Goldglint was able to be mated to a lovely dog from England, Benedict of Goldconda, before he returned to that country with his school teacher owner.

This combination produced Australia’s most famous Golden Retriever of all time, Ch Kyvalley

Kyva, belonging to Bob Philp. Although Kyva was born in 1959, no other Golden has sired as many Champions since.

As mentioned, Bob was greatly respected and is still affectionately referred to in this country as ‘Mr Golden Retriever’. In the 1960’s, shortly after Kyva was born, Breed Clubs began to spring up around the world and Golden Retriever numbers spread rapidly.

THE FORMATION OF THE GOLDEN RETRIEVER CLUB OF QUEENSLAND

In August 1971, a group of 20 people, all sharing a common bond – the love of the Golden Retrievers – met to discuss the formation of a Club in Queensland. Application was made to the CCC (Qld) and permission to begin as a Social Club was granted.

The first meeting has held on 9 September 1971, with 42 members present. After operating as a Social Club for three successful years, the Club became affiliated with the CCC in 1974 and later in 1996, became incorporated. The aim of the

11 DOG WORLD February 2023

Club was to promote the welfare of the Breed and to improve the quality of all the aspects of the Golden Retriever. In those early times, there was little recognition of the breed, so one of the first aims was to promote public interest in Golden Retrievers. In this, again, the Club was hugely successful and numbers grew. The inaugural Parade was held on 28 September 1974 at Brookfield Showgrounds. There were 85 entries, which showed the strength and quality that was now in the breed. A surviving catalogue and the critique given by the Judge (Mr Peter Cousins) are reminders that some of the Goldens exhibited on that day went on to great successes.

The first Championship Show was held on 27 July 1975, again at Brookfield, with Mrs M. Evans (Vanrose) from New Zealand officiating as Judge and an entry of 70. Again, the strength of the breed was evident, the progeny of the great sires and dams of the time proved their worth then and later and the breed became dominant in the show ring. Field Trials were organised and run successfully, although regretfully they eventually ceased and more emphasis was placed on Conformation Shows. Importantly, Obedience Trials are held in conjunction with the Conformation Shows.

The 10th Anniversary Show was held in July 1985 with an entry of 150 Golden Retrievers, with Mrs Lucille Sawtell (Yeo Kennels) UK as Judge as

12 DOG WORLD February 2023

testimony of the strength and development of the Club.

The Club has a recovery service, which is devoted to finding new homes for those Golden Retrievers who may be in need of them and produces a monthly Newsletter, which keeps members informed of Club activities and which publishes articles of interest.

Mrs Hope Phillipson, foundation and Life Member, explains in her own words about these early days of the Golden Retriever Club of Queensland.

“Clubs are formed for various reasons: competition, knowledge, social activities, etc. Looking back, I suspect that an underlying reason for our Queensland’s Golden Club’s existence in the beginning might just have been that the Golden owners wanted to indulge in their strong desire to enjoy the companionship of fellow admirers of their Golden Retrievers!”

There was a strong group of members from the Toowoomba area, led by Les Carlsson, Margaret Kirton, the Gourley family and others and this contingent was very important indeed to the progress of the Club. The first Christmas Party was held at our Brookfield home, with Santa visiting the group of adults and children on the one flat area of the property, though even then during one of the sack races, one member did come to grief with a damaged shoulder.

The Foundation of the Golden Retriever at Guisachan

Unlike many other breeds, the lovers of the Golden Retriever are fortunate to have access to its rich history, thanks to the conscientious documentation of the original matings by the breed’s founder, Sir Dudley Coutts Marjoribanks (DCM), the First Lord Tweedmouth.

The birthplace of the Golden Retriever is the famous “Guisachan”, a beautiful country estate at Tomich in the Scottish Highlands, belonging to DCM from the year 1854. Whilst the manor house is now just a ruin, it is thought of as a magical place for Golden purists.

Guisachan consisted of a dining room, drawing room, breakfast room, smoking room, business room, billiards room, library, boudoir, conservatories, 15 bedrooms, 5 bathrooms, 16 servants’ rooms and extensive domestic offices, cellars and storage. It is said that during DCM’s lifetime, Guisachan housed one of the largest collections of Wedgwood jasperware in the world.

This was later sold by his son and can be viewed at the Lady Lever Art Gallery in Liverpool.

After his death, the house was bought by the 6th Earl Portsmouth, whose widow later sold off many of the furnishings. When Lady Islington later purchased the property, she stripped the insides and removed the roof. This led to the state in which it is now.

Haddo House in Aberdeenshire, now owned by the National Trust and open to the public, is similar to Guisachan in its heyday as it was built by the same architects and belonged to DCMs daughter.

In addition to erecting a recent statue and soon to be stone marker to commemorate the breed at Tomich, Friends of Guisachan have worked hard to raise funds to stabilize part of the ruin for future generations. Lord Tweedmouth’s former kennels which are nearby have been turned into a private home.

One of the famous Gatherings at Guisachan.
16 DOG WORLD February 2023

Many people travel from different countries around the world to make a pilgrimage to this historic site. In fact, there have been a number of memorable gatherings organized by the Golden Retriever Club of Scotland for celebrations and anniversaries of the first Golden Retriever litter.

Housed in the Kennel Club Library in London is a record book of DCM’s dogs and matings since 1835, from when he was just 15 years old, until a few years before his death in 1894.

In this book was entered a dog Nous in 1865. Nous, a yellow sport from two black parents, was obtained from the estate of Lord Chichester in Brighton. Apparently, he was chanced upon and admired by DCM and his son one day, whilst being walked by a pedlar. The pedlar had obtained him from Lord Chichester’s keeper in payment of a debt. Nous was purchased from his owner and taken from Brighton to Guisachan in beautiful Glen Affric, by Lord Tweedmouth.

The family spent approximately six months of the year there, when parliament was not sitting. They all travelled by train from London, where they had a home in Brook Street, to Beauly near Inverness, and then by coach to Tomich.

Lord and Lady Tweedmouth had four sons and three daughters, Edward, Archie, Coutts, Stewart, Mary, Ishbell and Annie. Edward, who later became 2nd Lord Tweedmouth married the aunt of Sir Winston Churchill. It is said that a young Winston learned to drive a car at Guisachan. Mary married Viscount Ridley and Ishbell married Lord Aberdeen. Coutts and Archie did not have titles so were set up by their father on ranches in Canada.

It is known that at least two Golden Retrievers went to Canada with the boys, those being Sol and Lady Sol died in Canada but Lady returned with Archie some time later. Daughter Annie lived only for a short time and is buried in the family plot at Kensal Green Cemetery in London with DCM. It was when Ishbell was at boarding school that her favourite brother Stewart died of Scarlet Fever. Records indicate that DCM suffered greatly after the loss of his son.

A cousin of DCM, David Robertson, who lived at Ladykirk on the Scottish borders, gave him a now extinct Tweed Water Spaniel named Belle, and in

1868 the first litter of three Golden Retrievers was born to Nous and Belle.

Lord Tweedmouth kept Cowslip and Primrose and his son Edward, later the Second Lord Tweedmouth, kept Crocus. In 1872 the mating was repeated producing Ada, who belonged to the nephew of DCM, Lord Ilchester.

He methodically bred down from the original mating between 1868 and 1890, using another Tweed Water Spaniel, and outcrosses of 2 Black Retrievers, an Irish Setter (and it has been said, a sandy coloured Bloodhound). Around this time these gundogs were jealously guarded and only given to family members and friends.

It was the next Lord Ilchester who, in 1952, wrote the famous article in Country Life in the UK, confirming the origin of the breed, using DCM’s stud book as evidence. Prior to the publication of this article, many old timers believed in a romantic story that Lord Tweedmouth’s first yellow retriever was obtained from a Russian circus which had been performinton.

Ten years of research on the breed’s history carried out by famous Golden Retriever breeder Mrs Elma Stonex of Dorcas Kennels supported Lord Ilchester’s story. The founder of the GRC, the

autocratic Mrs Charlesworth, believed vehemently in the circus dog story and as a result, there was no love lost over the years between these two famous ladies.

The first Golden Retrievers were shown at Crufts in 1908 by Lord Harcourt who had obtained the first two of his dogs from a keeper living at Kerrow House. (Remains of the kennels can still be seen in the grounds of Kerrow which is now a B&B). The literature states that these two puppies were grandchildren of Archie’s Lady. The Weekes family made a great discovery of the Harcourt pedigrees when searching Lord Harcourt’s papers which are housed at Oxford University.

Shortly after Lord Harcourt started showing, the late great Mrs Charlesworth became involved with the breed. She was instrumental in creating the Breed Standard and the formation of the Golden Retriever Club which were instrumental in creating the popularity of the wonderful breed we love today.

What a legacy Lord Tweedmouth of “Guisachan” has left the Golden Retriever world.

100 Metre Sprint At Durack

You may ask, “What is this all about?”

On the evening of the 10 December 2022, a few enthusiasts put on a “Come and try” event at Durack.

The event was 100 metre Sprint in a straight line with dogs of all types chasing a plastic lure.

An amazing entry of 50 dogs were entered within 24 hours of entries opening for the first event, demonstrating that there is great interest in getting this new discipline up and running.

The second event (14 January 2023) sold out on the night with a total of 75 dogs entered.

The dedicated team involved will be looking at increasing the number of entries for their third event on 4 February 2023 (the original number of spots which have all been taken was 50). Keep an eye out on the American Staffordshire Terrier Club

of Qld’s Facebook page for the announcement. Everyone who was present including competitors, visitors and volunteers worked well together to ensure the evening went well and the safety of dogs and handlers was monitored extremely efficiently by all.

Each dog was given two runs on the night and those who needed encouragement to run were given a chance to learn during the tea break.

Dogs Queensland have put the sport on the Agenda for the next ANKC/Dogs Australia meeting for approval for a working party so that this event can become an official sport with dogs able to obtain titles.

There will be more opportunities for our members and friends to come and try in the near future. Dates will be published on the club pages and entries via ShowManager.

Pastel Pets: Dog Portraits

PET PORTRAITS

Treasure your beloved pet for ever with a beautiful lifelike portrait

Creating pet portraits is a real joy for me – it’s so rewarding to see the pleasure that a portrait brings to pet owners. Pastel Pets started in 2016 resulting from my love of drawing and animals.

I create lifelike portraits that are a true representation of a dearly loved pet. Pastels are my preferred medium to use which are ideal for capturing the softness of fur. I use a variety of soft pastels, along with pastel pencils for details, on a high quality Pastelmat surface. Completion of a portrait takes approximately 15 – 30 hours, depending on size and complexity.

Fees start from $300 for an unframed portrait with a plain background and gift vouchers are available.

Portraits are painted from a good quality photo. Initially an image of the composition is sent to the client for review. The portrait begins with the background and from there the head is worked on to an almost finished state. Once this part of the artwork has been approved the rest of the portrait is then completed.

It’s a happy event presenting a finished portrait to a delighted pet owner but occasionally it is tinged with sadness when the pet is sadly no longer with us.

New Illuminated Sign And Entrance Clean-up For DQ

– Nic Mather

On Saturday 14 of January 2023, some of the Grounds Committee members (Mandy Schelbach, Garth Goodwin, Vicki Schneider, Nic Mather and Ian McLean) gave the entrance to our grounds a much needed facelift.

The brickwork had grown quite substantial mould over time (as had the main sign when you enter the gate) and some areas required 2 – 3 soaks of 30 Seconds Outdoor Cleaner to help lift it off. The ‘Before’ and ‘After’ shots speak for themselves!

As the sprayer purchased for the mower still had chemicals in it and there were no taps with any water pressure near the entrance, the work required a bit of backyard mechanics (220L water drum, water pump, generator for water pump and petrol pressure cleaner). Unfortunately the pressure cleaner decided to give up the ghost and we were able to hire an all in one unit which made it a much easier prospect for a future working bee cleaning up around the grounds.

The old signage was retired and a new sign installed which is illuminated so Dogs Queensland will be visible to passers by on the street at night.

Those involved worked hard but the effort was well worth it.

If any members have noticed any areas in need of repair or a tidy up, please contact Mandy (Chair of Grounds Committee) via email at bluemooska2@ bigpond.com

Before After 23 DOG WORLD February 2023

At this time of year snakes are about and a lot of pets die from their bites, so what do you do if you find your dog has baled up a snake or worse, you think they may have been bitten.

The first thing you should do, not only for the safety of your dog but yourself and your family, is know your snakes.

There is a big difference in how to handle a snake interaction if the snake is venomous or nonvenomous and as well the nature of your dog’s interaction with a serpent.

So, be able to identify venomous snakes such as the Brown, Taipan, Death Adder, Red -Bellied Black or Tiger snake and keep your distance from them.

Stuart McKenzie from Sunshine Coast Snake Catchers 24/7 explains that if your dog has already got the snake in its mouth, or if they’re entangled, you need to leave it alone.

“If the dog’s running around with an eastern brown in its mouth, and the eastern brown’s still alive, then you shouldn’t approach your dog. If your dog’s being bitten, then so be it. It’s not worth getting humans

Snake Bites

bitten as well” he says.

Similarly, if the dog’s got the snake into a corner where the only escape route is past you, then you probably need to stay clear.

“A lot of dogs will just stand about a metre back and bark at it, maybe do a bit of lunging but never actually grab it, they’re just sussing it out, so get the hose out and just spray the dog vigorously with water.”

If your dog is bitten or if you even think it may have been do not hesitate, do not wait take the animal to the nearest vet, immediately.

According to Mark Haworth from UQ’s School of Veterinary Science, “The biggest trap people fall into is waiting to go to the vet, either because they think it’ll be cheaper to wait and see, or because the animal

24 DOG WORLD February 2023
(ABC News: David Hudspeth)

appears to be ok.”

Dogs may show little signs of envenomation at first, or will often collapse, then get up, walk around and appear to be perfectly fine, “That’s what we call pre-paralysis signs. They tend to recover over a few minutes and then they might walk around for a few minutes and then they rapidly deteriorate” said Mark.

Unfortunately, once they start showing signs of deterioration it can already be too late, “I’ve seen animals that haven’t even made it to the medical centre. The owners have put them in the car and by the time they make it to [us] the animal has died” Dr Haworth says.

Almost all vets will carry antivenom, and the sooner your pet can get treated, the greater its chance of survival.

You may not know your dog has had an unsuccessful interface with a snake but if your beloved canine shows signs of rapid breathing, vomiting, diarrhoea and wobbly legs paralysis from the neurotoxic venom has started its potentially deadly path and rapidly shuts down the animal’s ability to breathe.

“When the snake paralyses them, they’re fully awake, [the neurotoxin] is just a neural muscular blocker” Dr Haworth says.

If your dog stops breathing, apart from rushing them to the vet, you’ve only got one “hail Mary” option left. “If they’re completely paralysed, and you’re not too squeamish, you can put your hand directly over their mouth and breath directly into their nose. But you have to be very careful. They can be freaking out and give you a bite if they’ve got a little bit of energy left” Dr Haworth says.

Failing mouth-to-mouth, chest compressions can also work at a rate of 10-15 breaths per minute and you just want to see the chest rise and fall a little bit. If your pet survives, they may well need days to weeks in the hospital, depending on how severe the damage is.

So, the very best advice is avoid snake contact and if that fails, get to a vet, pronto.

Snake Attack

On having grabbed its tail, what do you do next as your beloved pooch howls like a banshee?

Well, you shake it up and done much like using the heavy rope in a cross fit exercise.

Amanda put her back into it and finally the snake eased its grip and Ferrari flew through the air, landed and took off through the scrub down to the beach and ran like blazes or her namesake into the distance.

Now what?

Amanda may not have dreamed of competing in the field events of an Olympics but suddenly she lifted and spun around and around as in the hammer throw and tossed that python into the nearby creek.

The crowd, if there was one, would have applauded.

Amanda Taylor was walking through the forest in the Noosa Woods on her daily dog walk with her two-year-old Pomeranian named Ferrari when suddenly, to her horror, what she claimed to be a three-metre coastal carpet python grabbed Ferrari and proceeded to wind itself around the pup’s head.

“It was just unbelievable how fast it happened … it was like an alien movie,” said Amanda.

No doubt when satisfied with his grip a suffocated dinner was on the menu.

So, what did Amanda do?

Well, she grabbed that snake’s tail because it was available and grabbing a snake’s head is something our DNA discourages. Pythons aren’t venomous but their bite can have consequences similar to crocodiles with a hire load of bacteria.

Amanda, heart beating sweat dripping, went off to find the petrified Ferrari who, as it turned out, had just a couple of small snake bites to her ear and face.

She is doing fine, but now may well be petrified of trees and the household door snake.

Bystander Kirsty Williamson, who witnessed the attack, said Ms Taylor was a “real snake wrestler”. Definitely an Olympic contender.

DQ Members’ Dog Wash Service Aids Proston Scout Group

– Kerry McNamara

In early 2019 we were trying to come up with some different fundraisers ideas for my daughter, Aleesha, to help with the cost of her trip to the USA and Canada to attend the World Scout Jamboree. As we live out of a small rural town in the South Burnett there isn’t a lot of opportunities for huge fundraisers.

Proston Scout Group is a small group that has given the local kids a place to meet weekly, learn new skills, make new friendships and attend weekend camps and get-togethers with other groups within the region and beyond. Over the years many Cubs and Scouts from our small group have attended not only Australian Jamborees but many World Jamborees.

Community fundraisers such as chocolate and pie drives have been the norm for many years so we thought we’d try a dog wash where the locals could bring their dogs for a hydrobath.

After speaking with Proston Rural Supplies we organized a Saturday morning to bring in our hydrobath, grooming table and a heap of dog towels.

As Proston is off the main thoroughfare there aren’t services such as a dog wash or grooming available in town. Residents are usually forced to travel to Kingaroy if they wanted to have their dogs washed. If mobile services did come to the town, it came at a high price. We decided to offer a hydrobath with Fido’s flea/tick wash and towel dry for the low price of only $10 per dog.

The first wash was a great success with most asking when we would be back!

In July 2019, Aleesha and one other girl from the Proston Scout Group headed to America for the World Scout Jamboree, then on to Canada for the Australian Contingent Post Trip. They were

away from home for about a month – an absolute unbelievable experience for all involved.

Since then we’ve held a monthly dog wash in town (except for the few cold months over Winter). We have our regulars who are often waiting for us the pull up in the morning and new people with their dogs who call in from time to time.

It’s a pleasure to bring a service to a small community and the dogs that might not get a bath otherwise. It’s become a bit of a social meet-up for the locals and their dogs.

A massive thank you to owners of Proston Rural Supplies – Dave and Tracie, for allowing us to use their facilities. We also enjoy grooming their gorgeous Siberian Huskies for them.

Aleesha has been around the show rings since birth and now holds her own prefix for breeding and exhibiting Australian Silky Terriers. She’s always up to giving anyone a helping hand if needed.

The Earl Of Dogs: Update

We’ve had a big response to our Earl of Dogs article featured in the previous December 2022-January 2023 Dog World magazine.

The staff at the UK Kennel Club’s Museum and Art Gallery who were so helpful, loved it.

One reader in South Australia, Geoff Sauer, has informed us that The David Roche Foundation House Museum in Adelaide has 6 paintings by Maud Earl and 2 by her father George.

Geoff, who acts as a guide at the Museum, said that these paintings can be seen by visiting the David Roche Foundation website (www. rochefoundation.com.au), or by booking a tour of the house museum should people be visiting Adelaide. The late Mr David Roche was a wellknown breeder (Kerry Blues, Afghans, Smooth Haired Fox Terriers) and judge – indeed, he was the first non-English person to be invited to judge “Best in Show” at Crufts in 1969.

Paintings showcased on this page are on display in the UK Kennel Club’s Museum and Art Gallery.

I started showing German Shepherds in the late 60’s and have been involved over 50 years.

I gained my German Shepherd National Council Specialist Judges Licence in the early 90’s.

I ventured into the All Breeds ring in the early 8O’s. I continue to show and breed English Cocker Spaniels under the Cobalt Kennel Prefix.

I achieved my All Breeds Status after years of Study and have judged all over Australia, NZ and the world. I take my position seriously with a great deal of love and passion.

I have a strong passion to protect the future of the pure bred dog from the “designer dog breed” movement. Together, we can improve and promote the misconception amongst the public and educate about the benefits of the pure breed dog.

I am currently actively involved in two clubs being the Show Manager for the German Shepherd Dog Club of QLD as well as held the position of Breed Affairs Co-ordinator; and I am also the President of the Sporting Spaniel Club of QLD.

Extremely passionate and dedicated to the pure breed dog, I have the necessary energy, dedication and love required to lead, support and promote our beloved pure breed dog.

I love the dog world and I believe being on the board and working for our members is just another way to give back to a sport that has given me so much.

I am a sitting board member, currently on the Rules and Constitution, Dog of the Year and Junior Handlers’ Committees. I am the nominated Director involved in assisting in the running of DQ Shows.

Club roles include President - The Basset Hound Club, President - Yuggera Canine Club, SecretaryGundogs & Heavy Breeds and Assistant Secretary of the Dachshund Club of Queensland. I actively contribute to the running of shows and regularly steward and show manage for clubs.

I also have the great honour bestowed on me of being made a life member of Dogs Queensland. I have bred and owned Basset Hounds with my mother and I am currently housekeeper for two beautiful dachshunds Greta and Wilson who remind me of why I love dogs and became involved in our dog fancy.

Professionally I am the HR Manager at QEII Jubilee Hospital with qualifications in Law.

I would be humbled and honoured to continue to work with members for the betterment of our great organisation.

44 DOG WORLD February 2023

–TONI DENNIS

I have been a part of the dog world for over 30 years, successfully breeding and exhibiting Cocker Spaniels.

I am passionate about Purebred dogs and what we stand for. I believe it’s important that we educate the Public and new comers to our hobby. There is always room to improve what we do and I’m always open to discussions and ideas from others to achieve ‘a better way’. I enjoy speaking with people to learn, understand and appreciate their views, ideas and thoughts.

I have held various Club positions over more than 20 years, giving me experience in many areas of Club administration and operation. I’m currently Coordinator for the Gundog Group Trainee Judges.

My Work life has given me knowledge and experience to assist in my role on the BoD. I have dealt with many sensitive matters requiring discretion and privacy, and always conduct myself in a professional and appropriate manner.

I’ve worked for Qld Health: Oral Health, Finance, WPH&S, and Human Resources Departments, NSW Premiers Dept: Regional Manager, Responsible Pet Ownership Program: Public Speaking, Education of the program, regular communication with managers, superiors on program improvements and have successfully owned/run a number of Businesses.

CRAIG DRURY

I believe I have a wide range of practical and professional skills.

I have over 30 years in civil construction. During that time I have managed my own business as well as been involved in operations management roles in a number of large companies. I am an active member of Dogs Queensland and a member of the Staffordshire Bull Terrier Club for close to 35 years. As well as Staffordshire Bull Terriers I have owned and shown Bull Terriers.

Over the last 4 years I have built strong working relationships with the General Manager, Grounds Manager and grounds staff volunteering my time assisting with grounds work. I believe these insights working with the grounds team can only be of assistance to the board.

I believe I have strong verbal communication skills and my work history shows that I can be strong and collaborative team member. I firmly believe that I can contribute in assisting DQ to move forward and it is my passion to contribute to the future of our sport. I would relish the opportunity to help contribute as a member of the board to increase our reach into the community and help continue to grow our sport.

– GARTH GOODWIN (ZONE

1)

I am a retired manufacturing and logistics manager and have held executive positions with various breed and All breeds clubs for over 40 years.

In 2002 to 2012, I held the position of Councillor under the auspices of the RNA the predecessor of Dogs Queensland. My portfolio was chairperson of the grounds Committee and supervisor for Durack Food handling.

Being retired and having the Management experience I feel that I can direct all my energies and time into being a hard-working Director with my priority to have Durack grounds and amenities re-invigorated and to become a showpiece for all members and visitors.

“I intend to give the highest priority to the following areas.

• Review and oversee the tender processes for Durack facilities to ensure they are fair and transparent to the members.

• Work with Durack Grounds Committee to further develop amenities policy with a committee that is consultive, listens to the members and respects their views.

• To be a Director that is respected and approachable with the ability to converse with the members.

• Review of the current Disciplinary and Media Policies.

– ULLA GREENWOOD

(ZONE 1)

My dog world involvement dates from the 1980s initially with the Afghan Hound breed but mainly with showing and breeding Whippets and ultimately becoming an All Breeds Judge 5 years ago.

I am a lawyer with an extensive 25-year background in the Queensland government including Senior Executive roles in Emergency Services, Justice and Attorney General and in the role of Commissioner of Fair Trading. This led to my input in 2011 on a draft constitution and my role in our corporation in 2012, drafting a new constitution and having member consultation sessions across Queensland.

My priority is keeping members informed and involved in the decision-making process.

Since 2012 I have been a director for all but a 2-year period. In late 2018 my husband Andrew and I took steps to facilitate a Special General Meeting to give members a vote on whether the sale of Durack and purchase of a former Masters property should be decided by members.

I have been President this last 4 years and have enjoyed working with successive boards to achieve good governance and especially pleasing budgetary outcomes. Raising the profile of our dog world in Queensland and nationally has been a key priority.

Dogs QLD need your ideas, energy and passion and as a Board of Director I will be humbled and privileged to advocate for you, the members.

As Chair of the Dog of the Year Committee we have redeveloped the qualification process to ensure equitability amongst eligible exhibits. The finale for this new format will be held in July 2023.

As Secretary of Yuggera Canine Club (an inclusive conformation and sporting dog club) we held a successful show and sporting weekend this year and next year plan to have a full international panel to host our first FCI CACIB show.

Working with the Conformation Judges Committee we have streamlined and defined the process which supports the education of emerging judges. This is a work in progress and feedback from trainees will always beconsidered moving forward.

Should I be elected, I would commit to:

• Ensure that all members have a voice at the Director’s table which is valued with no submission or request being unanswered.

• Raise funds and seek grants for an under-cover area at Durack;

• Develop the members education portal to be an interactive resource for all Dogs QLD members;

• Implement strategies to actively engage, develop and retain members including Junior members.

– LAWRIE KNAUTH (ZONE

I have been a member of the Canine Control Council of Queensland (DQ), since 1975

I was appointed as a senior obedience judge in 1988. I am also a qualified judge in Tracking, Rally, Agility, Endurance and Tricks.

I have been a member of the Qld Dog Sports Committee for several years as well as a member of the Obedience judges training panel. I am the current chair of the Obedience judges training scheme.

I have also served on Grounds Committee, Event managers and Stewards, ADSS Working Party and I am the current deputy Chair of RAFT.

I have previously served as a Director on the Board of Dogs Queensland and as a result I do have experience in the vacant positions.

Promises are sometimes hard to keep depending on the circumstances. However, the only thing I will promise if elected to the Board will be to give it my all and work hard for all the members of Dogs Queensland.

I feel with my experience and knowledge I still have a lot to offer Dogs Queensland members and I hereby tender this short resume for the vacant positions on the Board of Directors.

I am a long-term participant in the Dog World in a variety of activities (breeding, conformation, dog sports and judging; and as a volunteer and office bearer for clubs.

This, and being a regionally based member has given me a broad appreciation of opportunities and challenges that are presented to members and the organisation.

I am motivated to offer myself for election as a Director as I am passionate about consolidating our organisation, building on our strength to become more engaging and responsive to our members and operating environment.

Some of the key priorities I believe are critical to achieving this strategy include:

1. Engagement and inclusiveness with members and clubs in our operation and direction;

2. Objectivity and common sense in the development and application of our rules, regulations and policies;

3. Quality, responsive service and value for money;

4. Empowerment of members and clubs through education and support frameworks

– VYVYAN MANNION

(ZONE 1)

I have been an active Member of Dogs Qld for 37 years and involved in several Clubs (both Dog Sport and All Breeds), holding Committee and Executive positions. I have been honoured to receive Life Membership from Murrumba Dog Obedience Club (aka Caboolture Sports Dog Obedience Club) & Nanango Kennel Club. In 1992, I assisted in forming Pine Rivers Dog Obedience Club and I’m very proud to be a Foundation Member. When acting as Assistant Show Secretary for Nanango Kennel Club I was introduced to the organisation of Conformation Shows. I have exhibited several breeds and am an Accredited Writer.

I’ve been fortunate to have competed in Dog Sport events with several different breeds of dogs and successfully achieved titles in different disciplines. Golden Retrievers were my passion for twenty years and I now have Tibetan Terriers. I have bred several litters so am familiar with the challenges faced by breeders today.

I hold full panel Obedience, Endurance Test, Dances with Dogs, Rally and Trick Dog Licences. I have judged extensively and have had the honour of judging Royals, Nationals and State trials. I believe my extensive experience in the dog world places me in an excellent position to represent the Members.

– GORDON MAYNE (ZONE 3)

In recent years I to have visited every club in Zone 3. The diversity, comradery and kindness of Zone 3 clubs and members reflect my own personal values.

I have an interest in non-for-profit governance and am a member of the Australian Institute of Community Directors. I have qualifications in project management, risk management, management systems auditing, and completed the Governance Institute of Australia course: Not-ForProfit Officers, Directors and the Board.

My career includes senior management and leadership roles in hotel management, print media, and health (operational support and policy development).

As a member Cairns City Kennel Club, I have been actively involved in leading the club in recent years. Currently, as President, I am leading the review of the club’s rules of association and implementing the club’s core values: Respect, Responsibility, Teamwork and Sportsmanship.

I’m proud to have served on the Board and the Constitution and Rules Committee in 2022 and to have made a positive impact on our organization. Highlights include preparing submissions regarding amendments to the Animal Care and Protection Act and the Associations Incorporation Act.

My strengths in governance assurance, compliance, quality assurance, consultation and analytical skills make me an ideal candidate for Director.

49 DOG WORLD February 2023

– DUNCAN McALLISTER

(ZONE 1)

The last 2 years have not changed my views and my desire to help shape our Dog World into a better, more enjoyable place. The 4 years I spent on the Board taught me so much and showed me many things that need improvement and I think I have plenty to offer in that regard.

We still have no direction and no real sense of who we are. Our Breeders are facing more and more barriers and they need more help and support than ever before. Our Dog Sports are growing and increasing our public image yet we do very little in this area.

Conformation is slowly dropping in numbers and yet there seems to be no clear idea as to why. Nor is there a concentrated effort to identify areas where we can improve. Communication has dropped even more and there seems to be a disconnect within our ranks.

I cannot promise that I have the answers but my hobby since childhood IS the dogworld rather than just telling people how they should behave. Given the chance I would push for more openness and try to listen more to the membership, after all this is meant to be fun.

– JOHN MITCHELL (ZONE 1)

Have been Involved with DQ for over 30 years.

Conformation:

Began showing Chihuahuas

Exhibited Bouviers for over 25 years

Member of Ipswich Kennel Club

Herding:

Believe working dogs should be able to work in some capacity.

I have trialled dogs to advance level titles. Competed in all three ANKC Courses

Actively involved with Continental Herding Club (a founding Member)

Judge all courses at all levels in ANKC Herding

Actively support the club in training beginners

Judges Training:

Have been involved in the CJC for several years as a trainee and am a Championship judge in 3 groups

Regularly found stewarding (and giving stickers!)

Work History (40 years, including)

20 years Special Education Teacher

10 years as Advisory Teacher in Disability

I feel that the future of our passion lies in supporting our young ones to come through the ranks as exhibitors and hopefully go on to continue breeding.

I feel I have a good insight into understanding the diverse learners amongst us and think there are ways we can better support our trainee judges to express their knowledge.

I also feel there must be ways we can support new exhibitors through the introductory phase, to become active members of DQ.

TABITHA YOUNG (ZONE 1)

I, Tabitha Young become involved with Dog sports, mainly Obedience In the mid 80’s a member of the German Shepherd Dog Club. A member of Brisbane Dog Obedience Club, a class instructor and found a love for competition trialling. After obtaining my UD Title with my Border Collie when he was 3, I became a judge in obedience.

Over the years I have competed with many dogs and have obtained many titles including Obedience and Rally Champion and Grand Obedience Champion. I have also gained titles in DWD, and Agility. This has been achieved with different breeds of dogs including Border Collies, German Shepherds, Golden Retriever and Belgian Shepherd Malinois.

Currently, and for the past 5 years, I am an active member of the dogs sports Committee, and head the State & National Trials SubCommittee. We organise many activities, but my highlight each year to present awards for high achievements in the dog sports.

Over 25 years, I have seen the vast changes in people’s perspectives and the need to change and be the forefront in areas of Dogs in general, without loosing the foundation of what Dogs Qld stands for in responsible breeding and training.

Kind regards Tabitha Young

Breeder Alert –

Puppy Scam Websites

Dogs Queensland has become increasingly aware of Puppy Scam Websites using legitimate Dogs Queensland Registration and Queensland Breeder Identification (BIN) Numbers to sell puppies. Dogs Queensland Registration Numbers are obtained from legitimate websites such as Dogs Queensland or DogzOnline, where they are displayed as required by the Queensland Government.

Please see the Queensland Dog Breeder Fact Sheets for regulations and guidelines for Queensland Dog Breeders.

An example of a typical scam is:

• A Dogs Queensland Membership number is lifted from current advertising on the internet.

• The scammer researches and obtains personal details of the breeder including name, suburb, prefix.

• A domain name similar to the Kennel prefix is registered on an offshore registry.

• Once the breeder has ceased advertising the litter of puppies a new website is published.

• No physical address or phone numbers are advertised on the website.

• The seller avoids permitting you to physically see the cyber puppy and only sends non genuine pictures.

• The seller insists on only accepting payment by a crypto currency or a funds transfer.

As a breeder what can you do to avoid being an unknowing victim of a Puppy Scam:

• Regularly Google search the internet for websites using a similar Domain Name as your Prefix.

• Put a warning notification in your online advertising to alert buyers to check any website they are looking at is legitimate.

• Encourage puppy buyers to verify breeder information with Dogs Queensland and make direct inperson contact with you.

• Ensure puppy buyers check communications are made with verified contact details.

• Encourage puppy buyers to meet the puppy and breeder before handing over payments.

As a buyer what can you do to avoid being a victim of a Puppy Scam:

• Verify breeder information with Dogs Queensland.

• Ensure communications are made to verified contact details.

• Meet the puppy and breeder before handing over payments.

• If paying online, use a credit card or PayPal where you have a degree of buyer protection.

• Check website is an established site with a website security certificate.

• Avoid websites without physical address or phone numbers.

• A sk for proof, including ANKC registration papers and veterinary health records for any puppy. Importantly you should report any suspect sites or advertising to the ACCC ScamWatch website. Please let us know about any suspect websites too by contacting Dogs Queensland on 3252 2661 or by email at info@dogsqueensland.org.au.
