President’s Message

“

O

ur dog world has evolved and continues to evolve as the years pass.

When I first became a member of the organisation, there were very few options with competitions. Conformation Showing, Obedience, Tracking and Retrieving were available. Not everything was a good fit for everyone. No neuters being shown and no “associate” register dogs competing. Thankfully over the years, with hard work and dedication from many, many people, we now have more options available. This gives members the opportunity to find a sport that suits their dog’s specific strengths and preferences. Whilst I hope our conformation showing continues to grow and thrive, adding a sport to the mix can be fun and rewarding. The importance of sourcing a sound, healthy puppy with good temperament, is always paramount, regardless of your choice of discipline. Our breeders play a crucial part by breeding quality purpose bred puppies. I encourage members to consider adding dog sports to their competition goals. Our sporting community is very supportive and inclusive. We have juniors through to seniors, those able-bodied and those who need a little extra support. I have been truly honoured to be present for some special achievements over the last few months. Not all titles are gained easily. It takes perseverance and dedication, picking oneself back up, digging deep and finding another training

method to attain the outcome with your dog. Congratulations to everyone who has achieved and continue to achieve titles with their dogs. And our ongoing gratitude to those who judge, steward, clubs and members who hold events across the State. Special mention to Shani Euler and Scout who recently gained their Rally Master title. A little dog with a huge personality and a great following of fans. Jamie Ivy with Gracie who continues to hit her goals meeting challenges head on, gaining titles in numerous sports. A true inspiration to us all. Cassandra Dark (owner and handler) and Becky Thomas (co-handler) with Vixen the Labrador Retriever, who recently became a Scent Work Champion at nearly 11 years old. These achievements don’t just happen. It’s as a result of love, dedication and team work. With over 16 sports and more in the pipeline, in addition to Conformation Showing, and with Canine Grooming all on offer, there is something for everyone. We have many sporting, breed and kennel clubs affiliated with Dogs Queensland. A list of all affiliated clubs can be found here https://www.dogsqueensland.org.au/clubs/allaffiliated-clubs/ Congratulations to all those teams who keep on inspiring others with their determination and accomplishments.

Board and Governance Review As members will be aware, the Dogs Queensland Constitution and Rules Committee has been undertaking a comprehensive review of the Constitution to ensure the organisation’s governance framework is contemporary, fit for purpose and supports Dogs Queensland into the future. During the Board’s consideration of the initial draft revised Constitution, broader questions were identified regarding the future size, composition, capability and governance structure of the Dogs Queensland Board, and whether the current arrangements remain appropriate for the future needs of the organisation. The Board determined that these matters should not be considered in isolation and resolved to obtain independent governance advice before finalising those aspects of the draft revised Constitution. To support this work, Dogs Queensland has engaged Peakstone Global, an independent board and governance advisory firm, to undertake a Board and Governance Review. What will the Board and Governance Review consider? The Review is broader than Board size and composition. It will independently assess the Board’s governance across three key areas: •

effectiveness in fulfilling its governance functions and responsibilities;

•

efficiency of governance structures, systems and processes; and

•

culture and behaviours, including Board dynamics and decision-making.

The Review will also consider the size, composition and capability of the Board within this broader governance assessment and will benchmark Dogs Queensland against the Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD) 2024 Not-for-Profit Governance Principles – Third Edition. No decision has been made regarding any future change to the size, composition or structure of the Board. How will the Review be undertaken? Peakstone Global will undertake an independent governance maturity assessment through: •

review of key governance documents,

including the draft revised Constitution; •

confidential surveys and individual interviews with Directors and Management; and

•

assessment against recognised contemporary governance principles.

At the conclusion of the Review, Peakstone Global will provide its findings and recommendations to the Board. What does this mean for the Constitution Review? The Board and Governance Review does not itself result in any change to the Dogs Queensland Constitution. Its purpose is to provide an independent evidence base to assist the Board in considering the most appropriate governance framework for Dogs Queensland into the future. If the Board proposes amendments to the Constitution following consideration of the Review, members will be consulted through the Constitution Review process before any proposed changes are put to a vote. No constitutional changes will occur without member consultation and approval by Special Resolution in accordance with the Constitution and the Corporations Act 2001. Transparency and Member Involvement The Board recognises the importance of keeping members informed throughout this process. Once the independent Review has been completed and considered by the Board, members will be provided with information regarding the key findings, recommendations and proposed next steps. Where any recommendation may result in a proposed constitutional change, members will have the opportunity to consider and provide feedback on that proposal before it is put to a vote. What happens next? The Board and Governance Review is now underway. Members will be kept informed at key stages of the process, with further updates to be provided as the Review progresses and as the Constitution Review moves towards formal member consultation.

DOG WORLD October 2026

“Originally bred to be vermin catchers from

the rugged highlands of Scotland they have become beloved companions.

”

The Cairn Terrier is one of the most adaptable of all Terriers. They are a lively, energetic, intelligent small dog who should look alert and ready for anything. Their shaggy appearance and fearless, independent spirit along with a joyful personality makes them a wonderful companion dog for all ages. They are small enough to pick up and be carried but tough enough to have a good play or a long walk which they enjoy. The Cairn Terrier loves the company of humans and is devoted to their family and is usually not quarrelsome as they were bred to work in packs as a working Terrier in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland. They are assertive – not aggressive. They are a Terrier which means an earth dog and were born to dig. If you are concerned about your lawn or garden it is best to give him a place to dig, perhaps a sandbox or area

in the garden. ORIGINS The Cairn is not a man-made breed but evolved naturally over hundreds of years in the Highland and Islands of Scotland. Their ancestors were kept to hunt and kill vermin. Each Scottish laird had his own “cullach de madaidhean” (pack of dogs) and crofters had their own “madah” or house dog. They were used to flush out foxes, otters and rodents from rock piles which are called cairns. They were originally grouped with other regional types as “short-haired Skye Terriers”. After much discussion, not all friendly, they received their official name and recognition in 1912. This was to reflect their tenacious hunting style in tight places in stone heaps (Cairns) where their quarry hid. In 1911 a Standard of Points for the Cairn Terrier was drawn up and this was a basis for the present-day standard. COLOURS Colours in puppies can be deceptive as most are born with dark baby fluff which is usually

removed around 12 weeks. Their actual colour will then be seen. The accepted colours of Cairns are Cream, Wheaten, Red, grey and nearly black and Brindles in all shades. Dark points, ears and muzzles are typical. Brindle is where black hairs mingle with the base colour while brindle Cairns usually darken with every moult and by the time they are five or six years old they may appear quite dark.

comes through. The usual dog maintenance of clipping nails and tidy feet, bottom and ear tips keep them looking tidy.

CARING FOR A CAIRN TERRIER

Their approximate size is 28-31 kms (11-!2) inches. The ANKC standard is based on country of origin and is the same around the world except for the United States which maintains an older standard of 91/2 to ten inches.

Cairns are considered low maintenance as they shed very little. A good comb and brush every week maintains the coat. As a double coated breed they have a dense undercoat with a harsh topcoat that is wonderfully weather resistant. When the top coat dies it is important that it is hand stripped to allow the new coat to come through. Most pets are clipped to maintain a tidy appearance. When clipped the coat looses part of its texture and rich colour as this is part of the new hair as it

DOG WORLD October 2026

A Cairn is active and intelligent and is not the dog for you if you want to leave it alone all day. This will result in barking, digging and other destructive behaviour. They are a real people dog that enjoys company. SIZE

FEATURES One of the key features of this breed is its well furnished head showing a soft but intelligent expression. The balance of a slightly shorter muzzle with a good scissor bite, good stop with dark hazel eyes and small pointed well

HEALTH The Cairn Terrier is a relatively healthy breed with a life span of average 12-15 years and even longer. One of the major health issues is porto systemic shunt (PSS) which is a disease of the liver. A DNA marker has not been found though much research has been ongoing. A bile acid test performed on puppies around 6 weeks of age will prove a healthy liver function. All reputable breeders should be testing

their puppies and breeding stock and results should be available for new owners. Another area of growing concern is Ocular melanosis, a condition linked to the Cairn Terrier’s distinctive thickening of the eye pigmentation. While many Cairns remain unaffected for most of their lives an increase in cases of dogs over seven years of age has been seen. This condition can lead to glaucoma. The American Cairn Terrier Club have been doing ongoing research and hopefully testing will soon be available here in Australia. Cairns around the world and here in Australia are described by enthusiasts as “the best little pal in the world” and are increasingly becoming involved with dog sports as well as in conformation showing. TRAINING Positive reward-based training is essential to build a strong working relationship with them and to channel their natural hunting instincts. They do not respond well to repetitive training. Short and positive keeps them from being bored and finding other outlets. Scent Work, man trailing, SprintDog, Agility, Rally, Barn Hunt are but a few of the activities Cairns can excel at.

Please contact registered breeders in order to see if this is the breed for you. Also viewing at dog shows where they may be shown will give you a better perspective. For more information about the Cairn Terrier, please contact Cathy Scotton at joymont@icloud.com.

Dogs Are Good For Us Too

The health benefits of sharing our lives with dogs We spend plenty of time thinking about the health and wellbeing of our dogs – what they eat, how much exercise they get and whether they are happy and healthy. But the relationship works both ways. Sharing our lives with dogs can be good for us too. They keep us moving Perhaps the most obvious benefit of dog ownership is that dogs give us a reason to get

up and get moving. Walks, training, playing in the backyard, attending shows or dog sports – even the everyday jobs involved in caring for a dog all add movement to our day. The benefits don’t necessarily require a strenuous workout either. A regular walk around the neighbourhood provides exercise for both ends of the lead.

Unsplash

Research consistently suggests that dog owners tend to be more physically active than people without dogs. An Australian study published in 2025, Dog Ownership, Physical Activity, and Mental Health in Mid-to-Older Aged Adults: Findings From the HABITAT Cohort Study. Adams, E.K., Murray, K., Bauman, A. & Christian, H. (2025). Journal of Physical Activity and Health) found dog ownership was associated with greater walking and physical activity in middle-aged and older adults.

•

Male dog owners reported 20.4 additional minutes of total walking and 24.1 additional minutes of recreational walking per week.

•

Over time, dog ownership was positively associated with maintaining several measures of walking and physical activity.

•

Importantly, dog owners who did not walk their dogs had similar physical activity levels to people who didn’t own dogs.

The mental-health results were much less clear, with the researchers finding only small and mixed effects. Their main conclusion was that dog walking, rather than simply owning a dog, appears to help middle-aged and older adults maintain regular physical activity. Companionship matters Dogs are also very good company.

What the study actually found The researchers used data from the HABITAT (How Areas in Brisbane Influence Health and Activity) study, following Brisbane adults over nine years, from 2007–2016. It was a substantial cohort: 4,587 men and 5,996 women were included in the analyses.

•

Female dog owners reported 17.4 additional minutes of total walking per week, 25.8 additional minutes of recreational walking, and 24.4 additional minutes of total physical activity.

Pexels

At baseline, compared with people without dogs:

They greet us when we come home, follow us around while we complete everyday jobs and somehow seem to know when it is time to sit quietly beside us.

Unsplash

That companionship can be particularly valuable for people who live alone or spend significant amounts of time at home. Dogs provide routine, interaction and a sense that someone is always pleased to see you. Research into the mental health benefits of pet ownership is still developing, and the results are not always consistent. However,

training create routines and encourage us to spend time outdoors and engaged with something beyond ourselves.

Dogs connect people

Of course, owning a dog isn’t a prescription for good health. Dogs require time, money, training and a lifelong commitment, and responsible ownership means making sure their physical and emotional needs are met as well as our own.

There is another benefit that can be easy to overlook: dogs help us talk to other people.

The human–dog partnership

But for millions of people, the rewards are enormous. Dogs get us outside. They encourage us to move. They introduce us to people. They provide companionship, routine and plenty of reasons to smile. We often talk about everything we do to give our dogs a good life. Take a dog for a walk and conversations can happen naturally. Attend a dog show, obedience class, agility trial or breed club event and suddenly there is an entire community built around a shared interest.

Perhaps every now and then, it is worth remembering just how much they give us in return.

For many people, dogs create friendships and social connections that may never have happened otherwise. A reason for routine Dogs don’t particularly care if it is Sunday morning, if you’ve had a busy week or if you would rather stay in bed. They still need breakfast. That daily responsibility can provide valuable structure. Feeding, walking, grooming and

NEWLY APPOINTED ALL BREEDS JUDGES

– Toni Dennis (Tarrendayle)

In 1999 I decided to start my Judges Training in Queensland with Gundogs. My journey took me to NSW where I completed my Gundog Licence and with encouragement from other friends continued on to complete a further 3 groups, then halfway through a 4th group, COVID hit and it was time to come home to Queensland where I have continued my judges training journey. I am so proud to have now completed all my final group and achieve the title of All Breeds Judge. Cocker Spaniels have always been my main breed and remain at the heart of my journey. I have bred and exhibited dogs successfully achieving Supreme Champions, many Australian Champions, All Breeds and Specialty Best in Show winners and Royal winners. I have also successfully owned and shown English Springer Spaniels, Fox Terrier Smooths, American Cocker Spaniels, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and a Chihuahua and been involved with Bichon Frise and Weimaraners. One aspect of my judging journey of which I am particularly proud is my involvement with the Judges Training Scheme itself. I believe strongly in the scheme and in the responsibility experienced judges have to help develop those coming behind us and am very proud to be a Gundog Practical Trainer for our trainee judges in Queensland. Thank you to the many people who have been on this journey with me...previous Group

Co-ordinators who spent endless Thankless hours ensuring we learn as much as possible about the breeds at hand, Assessors over the years, Breeders and Exhibitors who have brought their dogs for examinations and allowed kennels visits, fellow judges who have shared their knowledge, friends who have encouraged me, previous study buddies who have kept me going and my ever suffering but supporting husband who has been there every step of the way. I will wear my All Breeds Judging badge with enormous pride, not simply because of what it says I have achieved, but because of the journey, the dogs, the knowledge, the friendships and all the people who helped me earn it. The licence may now say All Breeds, but the learning will never be finished.

Titles applications can be submitted via email at info@dogsqueensland.org.au Please include your certificate of registration, qualification details and the correct postal address as per the Dogs Australia database.

NEWLY APPOINTED ALL BREEDS JUDGES

– Lesley Roebig

What a journey it has been to become an All-Breeds judge! I never intended to reach this stage; originally, I thought I would simply obtain my Group 3 and Group 2 licences. I didn’t come from a dog-showing background. In 1994, we decided to get a dog for our daughter. At the time, we didn’t know which breed to choose, so we began looking for something similar to a stray dog that had come home with me from my place of employment and had sadly passed away. We eventually settled on a Cairn Terrier for our daughter, which also marked the beginning of her dog-showing career. It was a big learning curve, and after a while I decided to get a Cocker Spaniel. Dog showing is a wonderful hobby. You meet like-minded people, make lifelong friendships and have the opportunity to travel to places all over the country while seeing some truly amazing dogs. After some time, I decided that I would like to become a judge. I obtained my Junior Handlers licence initially, partly to experience what it was like to be the centre of attention in the ring at a dog show! When I began the journey towards becoming a judge, I really didn’t appreciate just how much study, dedication and effort is involved. I have been fortunate to be challenged to truly understand the

hallmarks of each breed and, importantly, why the people who wrote the breed standards all those years ago placed such importance on understanding the original purpose for which each breed was developed. That knowledge has been an invaluable part of my education as a judge. After gaining my Group 3 and Group 2 licences, I was encouraged to continue my judging education to obtain further groups. What began as something I never expected to take this far has finally led me to achieving my All Breeds licence. I am incredibly proud of this achievement. Thank you to everyone who has supported, encouraged and educated me throughout this wonderful journey. Dogs Queensland congratulates Toni Dennis, Lesley Roebig and Maxeen Hobson on obtaining their All Breeds Judges accreditation. We wish them every success as they continue their judging journeys.

Dogs Queensland now accept all Transfers via email at info@dogsqueensland.org.au Please ensure front and back of certified pedigree has been completed and that all parties have signed if there are any other conditions listed ie not for breeding, not for export.

– Maxeen Hobson (Kintail Cocker Spaniels

I owe my involvement in purebred dogs to my Grandmother, who bred Cocker Spaniels, Irish Setters, English Setters and later in life, Pugs. My love for Cocker Spaniels was enhanced by walking three Cockers to shows, watching them being showed by Grandma and coming home with a basket of prizes and ribbons. Later in life, I bred Afghans, Rottweilers and Labradors; however, my love for Cocker Spaniels enabled me to become friends with Dorothy Mayne. Dorothy bred Cockers under the prefix Kintail, We became partners and successfully bred beautiful Cocker Spaniels together. I have since inhered Kintail. Thank you to the CJC for putting the lectures on Zoom, which helped me beyond words. Living in Zone 2 it was not easy to attend lectures and field days prior to this.

A big thank you to all the people who helped me with advice and mentoring. The CJC has shown leadership by implementing the mentoring shows. The judges I had were both helpful in advice and showing me better technics in going over the dogs. It is a long journey requiring resilience, dedication and contribution from so many. The breeders, exhibitors, judges, mentors, CJC and loved ones – I thank you. I now look forward to continuing judging the beautiful purebred dogs we all love so much.

New Light Towers At Durack Members may have noticed the new light towers near Rings 1 and 3 at the Dogs Queensland Sports Grounds, Durack, with installation completed this week.

while also keeping future options open should the Board consider progressively replacing other towers and upgrading to newer lighting technology.

During a routine engineering inspection of all the existing towers, it was identified that the towers adjacent to Rings 1 and 3 were showing significant corrosion around their bases and had the potential to become unsafe. Given the nature of the issue, the Board considered that prompt action was necessary.

With the installation now complete, work is continuing around the affected areas to restore the grass where trenching was required. We are also looking at giving part of the old towers a second life, with plans to repurpose the remaining tower “stumps” into tables for Members to use around the grounds.

After reviewing the available options, the Board agreed that the most practical and cost-effective solution was to remove the three existing towers servicing Rings 1, 2 and 3 and replace them with two new towers positioned near Rings 1 and 3. Following consultation with a lighting specialist, the new towers have been positioned closer to the rings and the existing light fittings have been retained and reused. This approach allowed the work to be completed as cost-effectively as possible,

Breeder Alert – Puppy Scam Websites

An example of a typical scam is:

Dogs Queensland is offering all breeders the opportunity to advertise in the Dog World magazine Breed Features at the discounted rate of:

The following dog breeds are planned for the coming months: • November 2026: Field Spaniel • December 2026/January 2027: Saluki • February 2026: Pyrenean Mountain Dog • March 2027: Schipperke • April 2027: Yorkshire Terrier Booking and material required no later than 2nd of the month prior to publication issue.

• A Dogs Queensland Membership number is lifted from current advertising on the internet. • The scammer researches and obtains personal details of the breeder including name, suburb, prefix. • A domain name similar to the Kennel prefix is registered on an offshore registry. • Once the breeder has ceased advertising the litter of puppies a new website is published. • No physical address or phone numbers are advertised on the website. • The seller avoids permitting you to physically see the cyber puppy and only sends non genuine pictures. • The seller insists on only accepting payment by a crypto currency or a funds transfer.

As a breeder what can you do to avoid being an unknowing victim of a Puppy Scam: • Regularly Google search the internet for websites using a similar Domain Name as your Prefix. • Put a warning notification in your online advertising to alert buyers to check any website they are looking at is legitimate. • Encourage puppy buyers to verify breeder information with Dogs Queensland and make direct in-person contact with you. Brisbane Ekka 2026 A Showcase Of Queensland's Canine Excellence The Brisbane Ekka, held from Saturday 8 August to Sunday 16 August 2026, once again provided a wonderful showcase of Queensland’s purebred dogs and dog sports, bringing exhibitors, breeders and canine enthusiasts together for one of the most anticipated events on the annual show calendar. Often regarded as one of the pinnacle shows of the year, the Ekka provides exhibitors with a wonderful opportunity to present their dogs before highly respected and knowledgeable judges, while also introducing thousands of visitors to the diversity, beauty and versatility of purebred dogs. Throughout the event, a wide variety of breeds were well represented, with exhibitors proudly taking to the rings in pursuit of top honours. The competition culminated in the coveted Dog Of The Show award, with Ch. Starpacer Double O Seven, an Old English Sheepdog triumphing to take home the prestigious award. Dogs Queensland congratulates the Dog Of The Show winner, together with all of the winners who achieved success throughout the Ekka. Congratulations must also go to every exhibitor who stepped into the ring and proudly showcased their breed.

Their dedication and commitment play an important role in promoting purebred dogs to the wider community and helping visitors learn more about the individual characteristics, history and purpose of the many breeds on display. A heartfelt thank you is extended to the judges, officials, volunteers, workers and everyone behind the scenes whose time, knowledge and commitment contributed to making the 2026 Brisbane Ekka such a successful and memorable event. One of the highlights of the stand was, of course, the dogs themselves. A variety of purebred dogs were on display throughout the event, giving members of the public the opportunity to meet different breeds up close and, importantly, enjoy plenty of pats! Owners were on hand to chat with visitors, answer questions and share their knowledge and first-hand experience of their respective breeds. Additional supplies were quickly replenished to meet demand; however, the enthusiasm continued and the Show Bags once again sold out before the Ekka had finished. The strong response to the Show Bags and merchandise was a fantastic result and reflected the level of interest and engagement from visitors throughout the event. Thank you also to everyone who stopped by the stand, met our wonderful dogs, asked questions, collected information or purchased a Show Bag or merchandise. We look forward to continuing to share our passion for purebred dogs with the wider Queensland community.

Original Australian Dog Breeds Club of Qld Inc Open & Championship Shows and a Double Trick Trial – Louise Wilson (Club Vice President) and Kath Williamson (Club Secretary) The Original Australian Dog Breeds Club of Qld Inc conducted a Native Australians dual event in early August 2026, with Open & Championship Shows and a Double Trick Trial (all breeds). Bringing together eight Australian dog breeds from five ANKC groups with a substantial entry of 84 individual exhibits, Best in Show at the Championship Show under judge Miss M Davis was the NSW exhibit Gr Ch Alittletail Amazing Adventure SWN (Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog), with Runner Up in Show also going interstate to the South Australian Gr Ch Barokamurray Cowboy Tequila (Murray River Retriever). General Specials at the Open Show was handled by Ms J Pilchowski with the local Gr Ch Justpuremac Its Hot To Trot NBT (Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog) going Best In Show and Runner Up in Show being the Murray River Retriever again, Gr Ch Barokamurray Cowboy Tequila. The trick trials reached capacity numbers well before the closing date and the Club aimed to offer a safe trialling environment for dogs lacking confidence, nervous owners and reactive dogs. We are granted permission by Dogs Queensland to utilise the Lure Coursing Field and the SprintDog Club of Qld kindly loaned us the use of their orange temporary fencing and posts. This meant we could erect 2 large trial rings a good distance apart, that allowed room for dogs to “leave” the trick

ring whilst being safely contained. The rings were erected well away from each other, and handlers generally respected the spirit of what the club was working to achieve on the day. Trial judges Mechalle Anderson and Daphne Sellwood were able to select and award judges choice awards for their rings, as well as trophies and prizes for the highest scoring Australian breed of dog in each trial. Trial 1 was awarded to a Sporting register Kelpie “Frank” and trial 2 was awarded to an ACD “Cinna”. The Club would like to congratulate all of the place getters and thank our sponsors and prize donors for all the great prizes and awards we were able to offer. Special thanks to all the wonderful volunteers who assisted in making both shows and our first sport trials for our club a success. The major sponsor, True Blue Aussie Pet Foods, was incredibly supportive of our native Australian breeds showcase. This Club for Australian developed breeds has recently regained affiliation after a lengthy hiatus and is working on promoting our Australian dog breeds within an inclusive and welcoming membership. Club President Andrew Ziebell said the hard working members were a credit to the club and the success and overall friendly outlook on the day, along with wonderful weather, led to a hugely successful event. The following pages (56 and 57) showcase a selection of images taken during the dual event.

SCENT WORK

QUEENSLAND STATE TITLES 2026

– Kim Dawson On the weekend of 27-30 August 2026, teams from throughout Queensland and interstate gathered at the Caboolture Showgrounds and Caboolture Historical Village on Brisbane’s northside to participate in the Dogs Queensland Scent Work State Titles. In what was the largest Scent Work Trial held to date in Queensland, judges from Queensland and Interstate officiated over 1400 searches across the four days of competition. Searches were conducted across all four elements – Containers, Interior, Exterior and Vehicles – and from Novice class up to Masters, and three offerings of Ultimate Class. The beautiful venues provided many novel and exciting search areas. Showcasing the high level of skill and teamwork amongst those at the highest level of competition, there were over 180 entries total in the Ultimate class across three days of competition. Ultimate class requires teams to find an unknown number of hides and target odours between four (4) and ten (10); the search will include a minimum of three (3) elements in a search area between 200m2 and 500m2 and with search times between seven (7) and fifteen (15) minutes. Teams must ignore a variety of distractions in challenging search configurations including “blank” areas, and areas containing challenging scent puzzles within the allocated search time. The high level of teamwork and training was on display, and consequently there were many qualifiers amongst the competitors in the fun and challenging searches held at the Caboolture Historical Village and Caboolture Showgrounds. Many teams achieved Element Titles in Container, Interior, Exterior and Vehicle elements, in addition to Scent Work Novice, Advanced, Excellent, Master Class and Ultimate titles. Congratulations to everyone who competed over the massive weekend of Scent Work fun!

DOG WORLD October 2026

Excitingly, there were multiple teams who qualified for the Title of Scent Work Champion title over the weekend of

searching. Huge Congratulations to those teams on your success at the very highest level of our sport! Thank you to Judges Sonja Needs (VIC), Tracey O’Neil (WA), Cassandra Dark (QLD), Natalie Kirkwood (QLD), Yvonne Handy (QLD), Emily Brunning (QLD), Tara Devonport (QLD), Barb Murfet (QLD), Kellie-Ann Gunnis (QLD), Emma Mulligan (QLD), Erin Elliott (QLD), Gab Schilli (QLD), Rosemary Sehl (QLD), Sandra Pitcher (QLD) and Eva Deli (QLD) for the marathon effort put in over the weekend, and a very heartfelt thank you to the Working Party of Kim Dawson, Bec Dimitrov, Michele Cook and Heather O’Connor, and to all of the stewards, timers, scribes, marshals and everyone else who stepped in to help over the weekend. A huge thank you to our very generous Sponsors - Royal Canin, Kurgo, Plush Puppy, Denver Designs, Antinol, Loyalty Pet Treats, Canine Fitness Station, Labradorable, Surf Dog Australia, Chew Proof Dog Beds, Mind, Body & Bowl, Snacket, The Outbark, Dog Games Australia, Scentsational Pet Supplies, Hal-Mins Performance, Toni’s Pet Station, Prosperity Pets, Dog by Dr Lisa, Canine Ceuticals and Petstock North Lakes. Thanks also to our official photographers, Top Dog Photography, Tell Tail Photography, Canine Reframed, Koarlie Studios and Penny Parker Photography!

TEAM CHALLENGE Wholeheartedly supported by the competitors, the extremely light-hearted State Titles Team Challenge provided an amazing display of construction ability, inventiveness, enthusiastic teamwork and community spirit. The Team Challenge encouraged competitors to form groups with themed Team names, costumes and activities. Team scores were calculated on performance at a class and placement level, construction challenges, scavenger hunt performance, trivia quizzes, team spirit, inclusiveness, inventiveness, dedication to theme and just good old-fashioned “bribery” to the event officials. It was wonderful to see the community spirit and the way that

seasoned competitors ensured newcomers to the sport were included. The very hotly contested State Titles Team Challenge was won by the local team “The Odour Seekers” (Team Captain Becky Thomas), by a narrow margin over the fiercely competitive “Department of Odour Affairs” and the tiny but highly competitive northern team “Tropicolfacors”. A huge thank you to everyone who participated in the Team Challenge and made the trial such an incredibly fun experience! 1st – The Odour Seekers 2nd – The Department of Odour Affairs 3rd – Tropicolfactors (Cairns/Townsville)

ABOUT SCENT WORK Scent Work is a sport that is based on the task of working detection dogs to locate an odour and communicate to the handler that the odour has been found. Detection is done in a variety of environments and often during changing weather or environmental conditions. Scent Work is a positive, challenging activity that allows dogs the opportunity to use their strongest natural sense in a way that is fun, engaging, and builds and strengthens a foundation of trust between the handler and dog. Dogs are trained to recognise specific odours, and to alert their handlers when the odours are detected. The dog and handler must work together as a team, using body language and verbal encouragement to ensure all sections of the search area are covered, directing the dog’s search only when necessary and indicating to the Judge when the dog has found the odour. Communication with and praise of the dog during the search are encouraged. A selection of images and results appear on the following pages.
