President’s Message

T“he month of May has certainly been a month of engagement.

On 8 - 10 May 2026 we saw a collaboration between Caboolture Kennel Club and the Conformation Judges Committee to hold mentored shows for our open show judges. These shows were very well supported and play an integral part of our judges training. There was also educational seminars conducted to provide further education to our judges. I’d like to acknowledge the judges and mentors who gave their time and shared knowledge with our trainees. Thank you to all those who contributed to the events success.

Dog Lover’s Festival was held on 16 and 17 May 2026 at the Ekka Showgrounds. This was a fantastic opportunity to showcase our dog world to the dog loving general public. Our breed clubs and breeders had wonderful breed stands providing information on their breeds to attendees. The Dogs Queensland stand proved very popular with staff and volunteers providing information and friendly loveable dogs for the public. There was no shortage of hugs and pats for the dogs on display. Fantastic

demonstrations included Dances with Dogs, Scent Work and Obedience. Our gratitude to everyone who contributed to the weekend.

On Saturday 16 May 2026 we held a Member’s Forum for Zone One. This forum provides an opportunity for members to discuss various issues and concerns directly with members of Board of Directors. Thank you to the members and Directors who attended on the night.

One of the highlights of the show calendar is Brookfield Show Society double championship shows. This year was no exception. The shows were held on 23 and 24 May 2026 in perfect weather. Andrew and Ulla Greenwood ensure the day includes commentary of events to make the public part of the day. Members were encouraged to interact with the showgoers in what is a prelude of the upcoming Queensland Ekka.

TITLE APPLICATIONS ACCEPTED BY EMAIL

The Dogs Queensland Board has approved an immediate change to the requirements for title and award applications. Applicants are no longer required to submit the original Certificate of Registration with their application. A clear copy of at least the front page of the Certificate will now be accepted.

To make the management and processing of emailed title applications easier please follow the following Guidelines. The email address to send your titles to is: titles@dogsqueensland.org.au. You will receive an auto response if your email is successfully delivered to the Titles mailbox.

Please include the following information in your submission:

Subject: Subject to include dog registration number and registered name and title applied for.

Title attachments (Format is preferably PDF Document) to include:

DOGS QUEENSLAND DRAFT SHOW DATES 2027

The draft Show Dates for 2027 appear in the link below, which are to be read in conjunction with the revised Show Dates Policy. The policy is quite detailed and should be read thoroughly but we ask that you note 2 particular provisions from the policy;

•Affiliates have until 30 June of each year to request date changes for the following calendar year, so for 2027, 30 June 2026.

•In special and exceptional circumstances affiliates and Agricultural Shows may apply for an additional show. The request must be made in writing to the Board of Directors, whom

have the discretion to approve or decline the request, currently all Agricultural Shows have been allocated 1 Show.

APPROVAL OF 2026 NATIONAL SHOW – BOXER

CLUB OF NSW: POSTONEMENT

Dogs Australia have notified Dogs Queensland that the Boxer Club of NSW have postponed their National from the 6 and 7 June 2026 to the 12 and 13 June 2027 to be held at Bill Spilstead Complex for Canine Affairs, 44 Luddenham Rd, Orchard Hills.

CONFORMATION RING STEWARD'S COURSE

The Event Managers and Stewards Committee is taking Expressions of Interest for an upcoming faceto-face/online blended Conformation Ring Steward’s course. The course will be held at Durack for those attending in person.

The course will be held on Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 June 2026. Expressions of interest must be in by COB on 12 June 2026, and numbers are limited.

This updated course now include a module on the use of the Show Manager’s Steward App, including how to fix some input errors.

Requirements for these courses include:

•The ability to scan and upload documents using your phone or other personal device

•Indicating in your EOI any special Language and Literacy needs or lack of technology skills

You will be required to bring your own device/s (laptop and/or iPad/Tablet), large enough to allow you to split the screen to make working online easier, as well as a red and blue biro to enable you to complete the required paperwork and upload it onto the online site for marking.

The course will run from 8:00am to 4:00pm on Saturday and 8:00am to 12:00 (approx.) on Sunday. For those who attend at Durack, catering will be provided.

Once you complete all the theory, you are then required to organise and complete some supervised and unsupervised practical appointments to complete the Accreditation.

AGILITY COMPETITORS – CHANGE OF RULES 2026 FOR HEIGHTS OF DOGS

Please note: Only approved measuring tools may be used to measure dogs heights for agility.

4.3. Height Card

Prior to a dog competing in a trial for the first time, an Official Height Card, signed by TWO (Dogs Australia) Agility Judges or other persons approved by the Canine Control specifying the height or the height category of the dog must be obtained. The height of the dog is to be measured at the highest point of the withers at no earlier than 16 months old. The Height Card is valid for the life of the dog if it meets any of the following criteria:

• The dog is over 2 years old

• The dog is measured into the 600 Height category

• The dog is at least 20mm below the height cutoff for the next height category above.

If the dog doesn’t meet the above criteria it will be issued with a temporary height card and the dog will be required to be remeasured when the dog is 2 years of age. A permanent Height Card would then be issued. Any pass cards issued to the dog during the period of the temporary height card will remain valid.

DOGS QUEENSLAND 2027 DOGS SPORTS DRAFT CALENDAR

Rules 2026

RULES FOR THE CONDUCT OF QUEENSLAND DOG OF THE YEAR COMPETITION IN 2026

GENERAL

RULES

1. The Queensland Dog of the Year Competition will be sponsored, promoted and run by Dogs Queensland, commencing on Thursday, 1st January 2026 and ending on Thursday, 31st December 2026.

2. The Dog of the Year Final will be judged on Saturday evening, 6th February 2027.

3. In the event that a cash prize is awarded for the Competition, the prize will be awarded in the name of the Queensland resident owner/s of the winning exhibit. Where an exhibit is held in joint ownership with a current financial member of the ANKC, that member must be financial as of 1st January 2026 up to and including 6th February 2027.

4. Finalists in the competition will receive a memento from the Events Committee.

5. Catalogues for the Competition will be available for a fee.

6. The Committee is authorised to take steps to verify the eligibility of Competition finalists. Should an exhibitor or exhibit not meet all the specific criteria for eligibility, the exhibit in question will not be permitted to compete in the Competition Final.

7. The Events Committee reserves the right to alter any Competition rules should it be deemed necessary.

8. The Dogs Queensland Board of Directors is the final arbiter of disputed issues in respect to this Competition and exhibitors acknowledge that, by entering this Competition, they agree to be bound by the Rules and they further agree to indemnify Dogs Queensland against all claims arising from any actions associated with this Competition.

ELIGIBILITY TO COMPETE

In order to qualify for Dog of the Year, the exhibit must reside in the State of Queensland from 1st January 2026 or born during 2026 and reside in the State of Queensland and must remain resident in the State until the Competition date, 6th February 2027.

The exhibit must be registered to a Dogs Queensland member either solely or in partnership during this period (General Rules 3).

To reside means the dog is to physically live at the address on the Certificate of Registration. The term ‘exhibitor’ means owner/s, as recorded on the Certificate of Registration.

INELIGIBILITY TO COMPETE

All Events Committee Members and any other individual closely involved with the Competition or closely associated with persons involved with the Competition shall be excluded from entering at the discretion of the Events Committee. Sponsors are eligible to enter at the discretion of the Events Committee.

The decision if any person and/or exhibit should be excluded is to be decided upon the facts of each case with the final arbiter being the Events Committee.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

The following eligibility requirements must be adhered to:

1. If an entrant has ownership transferred during the Competition period, its results remain valid if the ownership of the dog remains valid (Refer to Eligibility to Compete) and providing the exhibit continues to reside in Queensland.

2. Any exhibit leased/transferred out of Queensland during the Competition period, or any exhibitor who moves Interstate or Overseas during the Competition period, automatically loses all entitlements to compete in the Competition.

3. All fees paid by an Exhibitor to enter in the Competition (including fees paid by an Exhibitor who falls under General Requirements 2), will not be refunded.

4. Any exhibitor who transfers to Queensland, permanently, from another Country / State will be eligible to compete:

(i) providing they join and/or hold current membership of Dogs Queensland: a) at their permanent address in Queensland; and b) during the eligibility period and is prior to and includes the end date of the eligibility period (Refer to General Rules 1)

(ii) providing the exhibit is transferred to that Queensland address and resides there, referred to in (i), for the majority of the eligibility period (majority referring to more than half of the time of the eligibility period) .

QUALIFICATION FOR ENTRY AS A FINALIST

1. For the Dog of the Year Competition an exhibit over the age of 6 (six) months is required to be awarded a minimum of 1 (one) Best in Show at any All Breeds Championship Show, Agricultural Show , Group / Multi Breed Championship Show where a Best in Show is awarded, or a Breed / Multi Breed Specialty Championship Show held in Queensland during the qualifying period (Refer General Rules 1).

2. To enter the Final, exhibitors will register their exhibit for a fee of $50 per exhibit through Show Manager prior to the advertised closing date, 7th January 2027. Late entries received after the closing date, 7th January 2027 and up to and including 14th January 2027 the entry fee will be $70 per exhibit through Show Manager

3. All rules under the General Rules apply

4. For cataloguing purposes, the following is required of the qualifying exhibit by 14th January 2027 and to be submitted through Show Manager :

(i) Photocopy of the Exhibits registration

(ii) Owners Name

(iii) Breed of exhibit

(iv) Date of birth of exhibit

(v) Name and date of the qualifying show

Note:

The Events Committee reserves all rights to include or exclude an exhibit which they feel does or does not meet any of the criteria listed within these Rules.

The Norwegian Elkhound is a powerfully built, medium-sized dog. Males stand between 20.5 and 22 inches, and females between 19.5 and 21 inches. The breed has a broad skull with mobile, pricked ears, dark eyes, and a high-set tail. The body is square and well-proportioned, covered by a harsh, weatherproof double coat in shades of grey, which typically sheds once a year.

They should be brushed regularly – about twice a week, and daily when shedding. With consistent grooming, you should be able to strip out the dead coat fairly quickly. It may be worthwhile to have them professionally groomed during heavy shedding periods, as a groomer can achieve more in a single session than you might manage in several hours at home. With proper grooming you will find they have no doggy odour.

The Elkhound is naturally independent and extremely intelligent, performing well in activities that require mental engagement, such as Obedience, Tracking, showing, and Scent Work.

Here in Australia we have been very successful in breeding healthy Norwegian Elkhounds. Most breeders only need to visit the vet for annual vaccinations. Historically, the most common health issues have been hip dysplasia, Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA), and sebaceous cysts, but no cases have been reported since the 1980s. As with all animals your dog will occasionally suffer from coughs, colds, bronchitis and pneumonia which is easily treated by your vet. Elkhounds need to be wormed regularly to treat internal parasites such as roundworms, hookworms, whipworms and tapeworm – your vet can supply you with correct worming treatment. External parasites such as fleas, ticks, lice also need to be treated.

If your dog has a discharge from his eyes treat him by wiping his eyes and if it continues a visit to the vet for treatment is needed. Hard chewing toys will serve as a tooth brush and prevent accumulation of tartar on their teeth. Clip your dogs nails with specially designed nail clippers taking care not to cut the quick as this will cause bleeding.

Temperament is one of the main reasons people choose Elkhounds. Many owners say that once they’ve had an Elkhound, they never want to be

without one. It’s common for families to own three or four Elkhounds over the years. They usually live peacefully with other dogs, cats, and household pets and are unlikely to attack without serious provocation. An Elkhound should not display nervousness or aggression.

Travelling with an Elkhound: Elkhounds generally love travelling and quickly become excited about going in the car. For long trips, it is advisable to use a crate. A crate also makes an excellent sleeping space, especially when visiting friends or camping. Because they become so accustomed to it as their “den,” they rarely bark when crated for sleep.

HISTORY OF THE BREED

Often referred to as the dog of the Vikingsthe Norwegian Elkhound is one of the ancient northern spitz type breed of dog and is the National dog of Norway. They have served as a hunter, guardian, herder and defender. In the land of sub – zero temperatures, deep snow, thick forests and rugged mountains only the hardiest of breed could evolve to preform the variety of jobs the Elkhound excels at. It is known for its courage in tracking and hunting moose and other large game such as bear or wolf. During the Viking era, Norsemen sailed

the seas with their favourite dog at their side. The Elkhound was a steady companion and a working member of the crew, both on land and at sea.

When a commander or king was wounded or killed in battle, he was carried aboard his Viking ship along with his dog and sent out to sea toward Valhalla – the home of brave and courageous Vikings in the realm of Odin and Thor. Kings were buried with their ships, weapons, tools, and of course their dogs. At Vistehulen, Professor Brinchmann discovered relics including four dog skeletons similar in bone structure to the modern Elkhound. Archaeologists date these remains to around 4000–5000 BC.

In Norse history, the years 1825 to 1845 are known as the “Wolf Period.” Wolves poured into Norway from Finland and northern Sweden, hunting in large packs and killing livestock, horses, and even people. In central Norway, on 14 February, 1842, a major fight involving nine of the toughest Elkhounds and local farmers resulted in most of the wolves in that valley being killed.

THE HUNTING ELKHOUND

The Elkhound is primarily used for hunting big game such as moose, bear, mountain lion, wolf, fox, rabbit, and even large upland birds. Hunting moose in the dense Norwegian forests without a dog would be nearly impossible.

The moose hunting season starts in late September and lasts five to ten days, or until the quota is filled. Every kill must be reported, and the season ends once the quota is reached. Each hunting party must have a dog to track any wounded moose so that the animal does not suffer a long, painful death.

There are two main methods of hunting with an Elkhound: Loshund and Bandhund.

• The Loshund works on a long lead, keeping constant contact with the hunter.

• The Bandhund is released into the forest to follow the scent of the moose. Once he finds the animal, he follows silently until the moose makes a stand. At that point, the dog begins to bark, allowing the hunter to follow the sound and locate the moose.

If the moose is only wounded, hunters usually wait about two hours before trailing it, to ensure a clean and humane end. Moose hunting is demanding and requires special qualities in a dog:

1. An excellent nose

2. Steady nerves

3. A deep, far-carrying voice

4. Intelligence and good judgement

OWNING AN ELKHOUND

The Norwegian Elkhound is adaptable to various climates and living situations, but does require adequate exercise and mental stimulation. He is happiest when included in family activities. A secure, fenced yard or other safe

means of confinement is important, especially in urban areas, to protect him from traffic and other hazards.

Without enough activity and engagement, an Elkhound can become frustrated and may develop nuisance behaviours such as excessive barking, which can upset neighbours. You need to decide whether you want a dog or a bitch. There is not a lot of difference between the sexes but you know bitches come into season usually twice a year and will drive a male dog crazy if there is one around. Perhaps you might want to desex a bitch but not necessarily a male. Desexing should be done at about a year when the dog or bitch has stopped growing – doing it before this time may interefer with its development and cause physical damage to normal growth.

If you decide to get an Elkhound, it is best to obtain a list of breeders from your state controlling body (e.g., Dogs Queensland). A reputable breeder often becomes a long-term

family friend and should be your first point of contact if any issues arise.

Your puppy should come with registration papers and a health certificate. We always advise buyers to take their new puppy to the family vet for a thorough health check shortly after purchase, to confirm he is in good health and to get advice on worming, vaccinations, diet, and general care.

Elkhounds make wonderful family dogs: loving, protective, intelligent, and playful. They enjoy attention and treats, and the time and care you invest in them is well rewarded.

Temperament: The Norwegian Elkhound is both friendly and fiercely loyal – one of the breed’s most endearing traits. Proper socialisation and plenty of exercise are essential. Regular exposure to new people and situations helps produce a confident, well-mannered dog. Trips to parks, shopping areas, and having visitors at home all contribute to building ease around strangers.

Highly intelligent and resourceful, Elkhounds make excellent family companions. They can sometimes be challenging in formal training because of their independence, so you must be firm but never harsh. They respond very well to praise and rewards but are sensitive and may become aloof if treated unfairly or punished too severely.

The key is consistent, kind leadership:

• Be firm and clear about what you expect.

• Reward the behaviours you want with plenty of praise, affection, and treats.

Although bred as hunting dogs, Norweigan Elkhounds are essentially friendly, loyal, and devoted. With the right upbringing, they make ideal additions to the family.

Breeding dogs in Queensland comes with clear legal and welfare responsibilities. The Queensland Animal Welfare Standards and Guidelines for Breeding Dogs and their Progeny set the minimum requirements that all breeders must meet. Use this condensed checklist as a quick reference to ensure you are meeting your obligations – and providing the highest standard of care.

NexGard SPECTRA® Next Level Glow-Up – New Farm, Brisbane

In April 2026, NexGard SPECTRA® brought the Next Level Glow-Up experience to Brisbane, transforming a section New Farm markets into a vibrant celebration of dogs and the people who love them. Part of a national campaign, the event was all about celebrating pet owners who go above and beyond – while raising awareness of the importance of parasite protection.

Dog owners who joined us on the day were treated to a fun, interactive experience designed with both pets and their humans in mind. At the centre of the event was the Glow-Up station, where dogs received a light groom – brush, spray and a little “zhoosh” – to get them looking their best.

Freshly styled, pups then took to the blue carpet for their very own “puparazzi” moment, posing for

photos in front of a branded backdrop. Owners received a shareable digital keepsake, making it easy to capture and celebrate their dog’s “next level” moment.

Beyond the fun, the event created a relaxed and welcoming space for pet owners to connect, learn and enjoy time with their dogs. It also provided an opportunity for one-on-one conversations about parasite protection, helping owners better understand how to protect their pets year-round.

Attendees also received goodie bags, packed with treats and surprises to take home as well as a free sample of NexGard SPECTRA. A special thanks goes to local pet store Mooeys, who contributed additional items and were a valued local partner in bringing the event to life for the New Farm community.

The Brisbane event was further supported by local influencer activity, helping spread the word and share the experience with even more dog lovers across the region.

Whether you joined us on the day or missed out, the Next Level Glow-Up was all about celebrating the joy of being a devoted dog owner – and showing how small moments of care, including parasite protection, can make a big difference for your pet.

A Service to Remember

As the afternoon light softened over the grounds, exhibitors, judges, stewards, dignitaries, and guests gathered for the ANZAC Dusk Service – an occasion that proved to be one of the most moving moments many in attendance had experienced at a

The welcome address was delivered by myself as Chair of the Dogs Queensland Events Committee and event manager for the day – my carefully crafted words drew a thread between the courage of Australia’s military working dogs and the dedication of those who breed, raise, and care for pedigree dogs today.

The address told the story of Tiber, a Labrador Retriever who served as a Combat Tracker Dog

with the Australian infantry units during the Vietnam War. In the dense and unforgiving jungle, dogs like Tiber were sent forward after enemy contact, following faint scents across broken ground, guiding patrols away from ambush and toward adversaries who were often only metres away. Their work, conducted in silence and at extraordinary personal risk, saved lives.

At Fire Support Base Coral in 1968, during one of the most intense enemy attacks Australian forces faced in that conflict, Tiber became separated from his handler in the chaos. He survived – but like many of those who served, he carried the weight of what he had endured. In later years he became more withdrawn, more sensitive to loud sounds, a quiet testament to the lasting toll of war.

Retired in June 1970, quarantine laws prevented his return to Australia, and he lived out his remaining years with a couple at the Australian Embassy in Saigon. His story is one of absolute loyalty, extraordinary service, and quiet sacrifice.

It was a story that resonated deeply with the assembled crowd. As the address concluded, the gathering stood in reflection, reminded that the greatness of the working dog – and the companion dog beside us today – is born from generations of careful stewardship by people who care passionately about what these animals are and what they can become. Lest we forget.

Distinguished Guests

The significance of the occasion was reflected in the calibre of those who attended. Joining members of the Board of Directors, Life Members, fifty-year members, staff, and the broader Dogs Queensland community were several prominent dignitaries, including The Honourable Milton Dick MP, The Honourable Margie Nightingale, Councillor Steve Griffiths, and Councillor Charles Strunk. Members of the Forest Lake RSL and recipients of the Assistance Dogs Program were also present, providing the service an added layer of significance and connection to the veteran community the event aimed to support. The TS Vengeance Naval Cadets, whose commitment to the ANZAC spirit added a further layer of authenticity and reverence to the service were also in attendance.

The Honourable Milton Dick MP offered a deeply thoughtful address, speaking to the service of the many men and women who have represented Australia in conflicts throughout the nation’s history, and extending that tribute to the animals who served alongside them – from tracker and patrol dogs to therapy animals and the stray pets who, in their simple presence, provided comfort to soldiers in the most difficult of circumstances. His words were warmly received and served as a fitting complement to the day’s tone of remembrance and gratitude.

The Championship Show

With the solemnity of the Dusk Service providing a meaningful backdrop, the All Breeds Championship Show proved to be a celebration of the very best of the fancy. A total of 446 entries were received across the seven groups, with an exceptional panel of judges specifically appointed to reflect the spirit of ANZAC comradeship – bringing experienced eyes from across Australia and New Zealand together for a shared occasion.

Officiating across the groups were: Ms Roni Oma (WA) in Group 1 Toys; Ms Karen McIntyre (NZ) in Group 2 Terriers; Mrs Danielle Dryburgh (NSW) in Group 3 Gundogs; Mrs Pauline Hartwell (NSW) in Group 4 Hounds; Mrs Heather Morrison (TAS) in Group 5 Working Dogs; Mr Steve Warry (WA) in Group 6 Utility; Mr Richard Watson (TAS) in Group 7 Non Sporting; and Mrs Heather Morrison (TAS) officiating at Best in Show.

Judges’ Reflections

Steve Warry - Western Australia

Steve spoke warmly of the ANZAC service, describing it as “beautifully done and a wonderful reflection of the service that dogs performed during war times and beyond.”

The judges were generous in their praise of both the quality of exhibits and the spirit of the event.

Richard Watson – Tasmania

Richards' career in judging spans more than 55 years since obtaining his first Championship Licence, noted that it was only his second time judging in Brisbane – his previous appearance dating to 2015.

He was particularly moved by the ANZAC service, describing it as conducted “with genuine reverence and atmosphere,” and shared that two distant cousins had died at Gallipoli, making the occasion personally resonant.

He commended the efficiency of his stewards, the quality of the organisation, and the warmth of the hospitality extended throughout the event.

Among the exhibits that caught his eye was a Minor Puppy Labrador Retriever, Bonnsway A Few Best Men, whom he awarded Runner-Up in the Gundog Group – a rare honour for a dog so young, but one he felt entirely warranted given the puppy’s outstanding quality and future promise and one whose future career he intends to follow with keen interest.

Judging the first Best in Show of the weekend, he found himself with a stellar line-up of high-quality exhibits to assess. His BIS winner, a Dobermann, impressed with his strength, masculinity, excellent structure and majestic movement. The Reserve BIS, a Bedlington Terrier, was commended for coat, presentation, overall shape, and true terrier character.

He also took particular note of the sportsmanlike conduct of exhibitors throughout the event – a reflection of the quality of the Dogs Queensland membership.

Karen McIntyre – New Zealand

Karen described the ANZAC service as “particularly moving” and noted it would remain a lasting memory.

She found the overall standard of exhibits very high, with several reserve exhibits of a calibre equal to the eventual group winners. The Working Dog Group impressed her with its exceptional depth, while the Utility Group was led by the same Dobermann she described as displaying the balance of strength and elegance she most admires.

Her Reserve in Show at the final show, a Hungarian Vizsla, demonstrated correct hunting character paired with effortless, graceful movement. Her Best in Show was awarded to the Bedlington Terrier, selected for embodying true breed character – a natural showman with terrier spirit evident yet well controlled, correct in balance and sound in movement.

Her “find of the weekend” was a French Bulldog bitch whose beautifully proportioned and balanced head, combined with an exquisite expression, she selected as her pick of the future - in a breed under health scrutiny, a dog displaying essential characteristics for a sound and sustainable future.

Karen extended particular appreciation to her stewards and to the staff and directors of Dogs Queensland for an exceptionally wellconducted show weekend.

Roni extended warm thanks for the invitation to what she described as a special show weekend, noting that while she has judged in Queensland many times, this was her first time in Brisbane.

She was delighted by the overall quality and standard of presentation and handling, describing the judging task as a genuinely happy challenge.

The ANZAC service gave her pause to reflect not only on the devastation of war but specifically on the sacrifice of “our special furry friends”, and she was moved to see service dogs and their owners present at the service.

She noted the clear and special relationship between Dogs Queensland and the Forest Lake RSL and broader service community in support of Paws Aid. A highlight she will carry with her: the experience of judging and cuddling the six wriggling baby Dogue de Bordeauxs.

Roni Oma – Western Australia

Pauline Hartwell – New South Wales

Pauline thanked Dogs Queensland and Committee for the invitation, and praised the show as exceptionally well organised across the entire weekend.

She judged across four groups, finding quality throughout. Across the Utility Group, she selected the Dobermann Sup Ch Ebondobe Eternal Fire (AI) as her Group winner, praising his balance, correct structure and strong movement, with the Bernese Mountain Dog as Reserve.

In Non Sporting, a Japanese Spitz, Ch Teikora Venus Goddess of Love, claimed the Group on the strength of her correct nimble movement and pure coat, with a Toy Poodle, Ch Farefire Black Diamond, pushing her closely. Pauline noted she had never encountered such a beautiful example of the breed.

In the Hound Group, a Whippet, Ch Shawthing Prudy with Jacuzzi, impressed with graceful, powerful movement, ahead of a Beagle, Ch Lunars Lend a Paw

In the Working Dog Group for the Paws Aid Show, she awarded Group to an outstanding American-bred Australian Shepherd, Am Gr Ch Br Ch Bailiwick Audacious Coca (Imp USA), with the Reserve going to a beautifully presented Old English Sheepdog, Am Ch Sup Ch Wynsilot Rhythm’s Gonna Get You (Imp USA) – a breed close to her heart and one she herself has been breeding for many years.

An event of this nature does not come together without the efforts of many, and it is with sincere gratitude that we acknowledge all those whose involvement made the ANZAC Day Fundraising Dog Show the truly special occasion it proved to be.

Breeder Alert –Puppy Scam Websites

Dogs Queensland has become increasingly aware of Puppy Scam Websites using legitimate Dogs Queensland Registration and Queensland Breeder Identification (BIN) Numbers to sell puppies. Dogs Queensland Registration Numbers are obtained from legitimate websites such as Dogs Queensland or DogzOnline, where they are displayed as required by the Queensland Government.

Please see the Queensland Dog Breeder Fact Sheets for regulations and guidelines for Queensland Dog Breeders.

An example of a typical scam is:

• A Dogs Queensland Membership number is lifted from current advertising on the internet.

• The scammer researches and obtains personal details of the breeder including name, suburb, prefix.

• A domain name similar to the Kennel prefix is registered on an offshore registry.

• Once the breeder has ceased advertising the litter of puppies a new website is published.

• No physical address or phone numbers are advertised on the website.

• The seller avoids permitting you to physically see the cyber puppy and only sends non genuine pictures.

• The seller insists on only accepting payment by a crypto currency or a funds transfer.

As a breeder what can you do to avoid being an unknowing victim of a Puppy Scam:

• Regularly Google search the internet for websites using a similar Domain Name as your Prefix.

• Put a warning notification in your online advertising to alert buyers to check any website they are looking at is legitimate.

• Encourage puppy buyers to verify breeder information with Dogs Queensland and make direct inperson contact with you.

• Ensure puppy buyers check communications are made with verified contact details.

• Encourage puppy buyers to meet the puppy and breeder before handing over payments.

As a buyer what can you do to avoid being a victim of a Puppy Scam:

• Verify breeder information with Dogs Queensland.

• Ensure communications are made to verified contact details.

• Meet the puppy and breeder before handing over payments.

• If paying online, use a credit card or PayPal where you have a degree of buyer protection.

• Check website is an established site with a website security certificate.

• Avoid websites without physical address or phone numbers.

• A sk for proof, including ANKC registration papers and veterinary health records for any puppy.

Western Suburbs Kennel Club Championship Shows

The Western Suburbs Kennel Club hosted three Championship Shows and one Open Show over the weekend of Saturday 2 May and Sunday 3 May 2026 at the Dogs Queensland Sports Grounds, Durack. The event proved to be a highly successful and enjoyable weekend for exhibitors, officials, volunteers, and spectators alike, showcasing the dedication and passion shared within the dog show community.

A distinguished panel of judges officiated throughout the weekend, bringing with them a wealth of experience and expertise across a variety of breeds and groups. Judges included Mr C Moore, Mr S Cassingena and Mr B Manglesdorf from Victoria, Mrs R Ralphs from New South Wales, together with Queensland judges Mrs R Brown, Mr S Yiannou and Mr L Wright. Their professionalism, knowledge, and thoughtful assessments were greatly appreciated by all exhibitors.

The event attracted an outstanding number of exhibitors, with an exceptional standard of purebred dogs showcased throughout the weekend.

Congratulations to all the winners! We also sincerely thank all exhibitors for presenting their breeds, our experienced judges for their expertise, and the many dedicated volunteers whose hard work contributed greatly to the success of the event.

Calling For Ekka Volunteers

Dogs Queensland is calling for volunteers to come and work at the DQ Ekka stand.

You'll be promoting the organisation to the wider canine community by telling them about our wonderful dogs, the activities they can get involved in, what DQ can assist with, encouraging memberships and assisting them to downloading the DQ App to stay in contact with us. You will also help liaise with exhibitors in regards to bringing their dogs to the stand for the public to interact with.

There are two shifts available - 8am to

12.30pm and 12 noon to 5pm each day from Saturday 8 August 2026 through to Sunday 16 August 2026. Volunteers can also put their hand up for full day shifts.

Entry passes and a meal allowance will be provided and parking / train costs will be reimbursed, but volunteers must be committed to the DQ stand for the entirety of their shift.

21.1 A member who breeds a litter of dogs, the parents of which are registered or eligible for registration with the CCCQ Ltd or other recognised canine controlling body must:

(1) Register such litter, including all of the living progeny in such litter at one (1) and the same time within eighteen (18) calendar months of the date of whelping or prior to sale or rehoming (see Rule 28). No litter will be registered after twelve (12) months of age without the approval of the CCCQ Ltd;

(2) Comply with CCCQ Ltd Rules and correctly complete all forms required by the CCCQ Ltd;

(3) Pay such fees as are determined from time to time by the CCCQ Ltd. A standard fee will be set for registrations received by the office on a date within four (4) months of the date of whelping and a higher fee for registrations received by the office on a date between four (4) and six (6) months or between six (6) and twelve (12) months of the date of whelping;

(4) Where the breeder wishes to register a puppy with the breeder’s name as part owner, an Agreement signed by the purchaser of the puppy is to be attached to the application to register the litter. Only official CCCQ Ltd Partnership Agreement forms are to be used;

(5) Where the breeder wishes to register a puppy on the Limited Register, an Official CCCQ Ltd Limited Register Agreement statement from the purchaser stating that the implications of the Limited Register are understood is to be attached to the application; and

(6) A breeder may, at time of registration on the General Register, endorse registration ”Not to be exported”.

Paralysis Ticks

Tick Season is coming…

Paralysis ticks are one of the most serious tick hazards for dogs in Australia, especially for those residing or visiting coastal areas along the East Coast. Ixodes holocyclus (the eastern paralysis tick) is found along the Australian Eastern seaboard throughout the coastal areas of Queensland, through New South Wales and all the way down to Northern Victoria. In Queensland and Northern New South Wales, tick cases can still occur throughout the year.

The Eastern Paralysis Tick is one of the most toxic ticks in the world. The tick injects a powerful toxin while feeding. Envenomation may lead to weakness, breathing difficulty, paralysis and, in severe cases, death. Just one tick may be enough to cause fatal paralysis.

PREVENTION

If you live in a tick-prone area, dog(s) should be checked after bush walks, time in long grass or visits to areas frequented by wildlife. When walking your dog(s), keep your dog(s) on a lead, stay on the path and avoid long grass and wildlife areas altogether.

The best protection is prevention. There are reliable tick prevention products. Use as recommended by your veterinarian and apply or administer it in accordance with the directions provided. Daily tick checks are also important, especially around the head, ears, neck, lips, under the collar, between the toes and around the tail.

Knowing the signs, checking your dog(s) and using effective prevention all year round can greatly

reduce the risk. However, preventive treatment is not 100% effective. Efficacy may be reduced towards the end of the period of coverage.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

• Voice changes

• Wobbliness or weakness, often starting in the back legs

• Vomiting, retching or regurgitation

• Drooling or trouble swallowing

• Fast or laboured breathing

• Lethargy, collapse or inability to stand

WHAT TO DO IF YOU FIND A TICK

If you find a tick on your dog(s), remove it as quickly as possible and contact a veterinarian straight away for advice. Check your dog(s) carefully. Where there is one, there may be more.

After removal of a tick, symptoms can still appear or worsen over the next 24 to 36 hours, so a veterinary assessment is important. Symptoms can worsen quickly. If your dog shows any sign of breathing difficulty, increasing weakness or collapse, seek emergency veterinary treatment immediately.

TREATMENT

Since 1945, there has been a tick antiserum (TAS) available to treat tick poisoning. The tick antiserum works by mopping up the toxins that are circulating in the bloodstream of the dog(s) thereby relieving the symptoms to a point where hopefully the dog’s immune system and other physiological coping mechanisms allow the dog(s) to recover. The earlier treatment is commenced, the better the prospects of recovery. In most cases, a tick clip will be

recommended. If refused, it is highly likely that you will be required to sign a waiver.

Data from veterinary hospitals and clinics on the east coast of Australia indicates that approximately 50,000 dogs are taken to a vet each year for veterinary treatment for tick paralysis (Barker et al. unpublished data). The cost of treatment is very high and there is no guarantee of success. One in 10 of these 50,0000 dogs (i.e. approximately 5,000 dogs) will not recover from tick paralysis or will die by euthanasia because the dog is unable to be saved.

The above figures are despite the availability of tick preventative products. In the absence of such products, the number of dogs affected and deaths would be far higher.

For those dogs that do recover from tick paralysis, there are often long-term effects. For example, the long QT syndrome (LQTS) which often leads to sudden and unexpected death sometime well after tick paralysis hospitalisation (Atwell & Campbell, 2008), cardiovascular sequela and other long-term side effects (Campbell 2002).

RISKS – SUPPLY OF TAS

One of the greatest ongoing risks for future treatment is a reliable supply of TAS. Due to drier weather conditions in late 2022 and early 2023, there were way fewer ticks in the environment. While this seems great, this affected the supply of ticks to manufacture the Tick Antiserum.

So, when conditions became wetter and more favourable to ticks, there was a critical shortage of Tick Antiserum. Veterinary practices around the country could not buy the Tick Antiserum that they needed. Following crisis-meetings, in the end just enough Tick Antiserum was available in most parts of Queensland, and so only a small number of dogs died because of the lack of supply of the Tick Antiserum. A major crisis was averted, thankfully. But this shortage highlighted the precarious nature of the Tick Antiserum supply-chain in Queensland.

It seems inevitable that soon, another shortage of female paralysis ticks in the environment, and the subsequent shortage of Tick Antiserum will threaten the clinical treatment of dogs by veterinary practices along the east coast of Australia, particularly those in Queensland, New South Wales and Northern Victoria.

RESEARCH TO ENSURE SUPPLY OF TAS FOR AUSTRALIA

Dogs Queensland is currently funding important research by Professor Barker at the University of Queensland to ensure a reliable supply of critical tick antiserum around the country. Come along to our upcoming seminar to hear from Professor Barker (tick guru) about ticks and the research currently being conducted to save the lives of our precious dogs and about how you can best reduce the risk to your dogs.

Professor of Parasitology at the University of Queensland, St Lucia, Brisbane. Professor Barker has been studying ticks and other ectoparasites at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia, for over 25 years. Recent and current activities include:

(i) a monograph (670 pages), with his wife Dayana on the “Ticks of Australasia”; and

(ii) research directed to ensuring supply of Australian paralysis ticks (Ixodes holocyclus) for the production of tick anti-sera and new and improved immunological therapeutics to treat tick-paralysis in dogs.

The Seminar will cover the following topics:

• The Australian Eastern paralysis tick (how it ticks) and other ticks.

• Effects of paralysis tick toxin – short and long term.

• Current Treatment.

• Research work being conducted at the University of Queensland (funded by DQ).

• Warning Signs and When to Seek Help.

• Prevention and minimising risk.

Introducing a New Dog Sport to Australia: BALE SEEK

Dogs Australia is pleased to welcome this new dog sport to Australia. The name may be new, but a similar sport has been enjoyed in a few other countries over the past 10 to 14 years.

The conditions and code of ethics in Australia dictate that the rules and sport be different from its overseas origins, in the props used, classes offered, and non-live quarry/scent tubes.

The sport derives its roots from farm dogs ridding sheds and storage areas of vermin that damaged food. This involved searching, scenting and agility to access where the vermin hid. If a dog could not reach the vermin, it would alert its master to the location, and together they could remove the vermin.

The sport has been unofficially promoted for the past 3 years in Western Australia through fun practice days, led by Brigitte Walkey, who is a past judge in the related discipline of Barn Hunt in North America. Ms Walkey also titled 3 of her own dogs in that discipline.

We are pleased to note that Dogs Australia has appointed Ms Walkey to become the Chair of the National Bale Seek Working Party. This will unify and standardise the sport of Bale Seek across Australia. Currently, there are 6 states getting involved – WA, QLD, NSW, TAS, SA, and VIC.

The sport is open to all breed of dogs and Associate Registered dogs. The sport is held in a well fenced area and involves bales of straw or hay (7-9 bales in

the Instinct level, and up to 50 bales in the Master level) set out in specific patterns that include a tunnel made of bales and support boards.

The novice class has a short, straight tunnel, but in the highest class, Master, the tunnel will contain 3-4 turns! The amount of hidden PVC tubes varies per class, from 3 tubes in Novice to 8 tubes in Master.

The Locker Valley Dog Training Club recently hosted practice sessions over 2 days at the Laidley showgrounds. Many different breeds and sizes of dogs, tunnelled, climbed and sniffed their way around the course to locate the hidden tube and indicate to their handlers where the “quarry” was hidden. Some dogs quickly tapped into their natural instinct, while other needed a little bit of help and encouragement.

If you have had the chance to watch this sport or participate, you know just how much fun the dogs are having! They get to use their best attribute – their noses! The scented tubes are hidden in strong PVC tubes that are lightly covered with loose straw so that neither the dog nor the handler can see them, yet the dog can smell them. Once the dog indicates the find (through touching the tube with their nose, pawing at it, staring, and /or vocalising) then the handler must call it so the judge may confirm it, or it might be an empty tube! That’s where training helps, so the dog and handler work as a team. The sport challenges the team to work together.

There are titles to be earned in 6 regular classes and Veteran classes, plus an unofficial, fast paced class called Super Seven Snuffle.

WA is leading the way with training Foundation Judges. Other states are not far behind because last year Ms Walkey already visited TAS, NSW, and QLD to promote Bale Seek through fun practise days. There is a huge interest in participation and welcoming this new sport officially across Australia. We hope you and your dog will come join the fun at the next Bale Seek event.

Ultimate Classes are split between two Judges (“A” and “B” searches) to allow additional entries. Competitors will be randomly allocated to either Judge after close of entries. Searches will run simultaneously. Ultimate entries capped at forty (40) per Judge.
