UPDATE – PEMBROKE & CARDIGAN BREED STANDARDS EXTENSION
The National Breed Standards Coordination Group received a submission from the National Welsh Corgi Council to update the breed standard extensions for the Cardigan and Pembroke to bring them in line with the Royal Kennel Club standard. After reviewing the submission, the NBSCG has agreed for the existing breed standard extensions on the Dogs Australia website to be replaced with the following:
THE WELSH CORGI (PEMBROKE)
THE WELSH CORGI (CARDIGAN)
AMENDMENT TO REGULATIONS 5 SECTION 9
RULES FOR THE CONDUCT OF FCI/CACIB SHOWS
Dogs Australia has amended Section 9, Clause 9.3.1 Regulations 5 – Conformation Shows to align with current FCI requirements.
9.3.1
Applications to hold a CACIB International Dog Show sanctioned by Dogs Australia and subsequently by the FCI, must be sent in the first instance to the Member Body of Dogs Australia where the show is planned to be held no later than 18 months prior to the intended show date and, if the application is supported by that Member Body, is then to be forwarded to Dogs Australia for consideration. If approved by Dogs Australia the application is then to be forwarded to the General Secretariat of the FCI no later than 12 months prior, and no earlier than four calendar years prior, to the proposed date of the show. Applications must be accompanied by the Application Fee. The application fee will be refunded if the application is not approved. (Clause 9.3.1 Amended 02/23, 5.11 –Effective 01/07/23)
Whilst the FCI reads:
Applications to get an FCI-CACIB International Dog Show sanctioned by the FCI must be sent to the FCI Head Office latest 6 (six) months before the show or earliest four calendar years before the show. This timeframe can be altered in justified cases accepted by the FCI Head Office.
The Executive, under the ANKC Constitution clause 34A.2, have determined that this error must be corrected and have approved the Regulations to be amended to mirror that of the FCI.
With great regret, Dogs Australia announce Dr Roger Lavelle’s retirement as Chief Panellist and reader for the Dogs Australia Canine Hip and Elbow Dysplasia Scheme.
The other readers listed on the Dogs Australia website will continue to be available and in the near future there will be new radiologists joining the scheme.
This change will occur from 1 July 2026.
We wish Dr Lavelle and his wife Annie a very happy, healthy and long retirement and thank him for his outstanding contribution to the training of veterinary surgeons in Australia over many years and to the health and welfare of all dogs, including Dogs Australia registered dogs and countless service dogs through the Australian Veterinary Association hip and elbow scheme and subsequently the Dogs Australia CHEDS.
APPROVAL OF 2029 NATIONAL DANCES WITH DOGS COMPETITION AND NATIONAL TRICK DOG TEST
Dogs Australia are pleased to advise the approval of the 2029 National Dances with Dogs Competition to be held on 30 June 2029 and the National Trick Dog Test to be held on 1 July 2029 at the Dogs Queensland Showgrounds, 247 King Avenue, Durack, Qld.
EXPRESSION OF INTEREST – SPRINTDOG JUDGES & LURE OPERATORS
The Board extends its congratulations to all those involved in the growth of SprintDog both nationally and especially here in Queensland. This sport has become one of the most rapidly expanding
areas of Dog Sports, with demand for trials often exceeding supply. As a result, many members are unfortunately missing out through ballots due to the limited number of available events. There are also instances of regional events having to be cancelled due to lack of locally trained Judges and Operators.
To support this continued growth, the Board has identified a need to increase the number of trained SprintDog Judges and Lure Operators. By expanding the pool of qualified officials, we aim to enable more clubs – particularly those not currently hosting events – to offer additional trials for our members.
We are now calling for Expressions of Interest (EOIs) from members who would like to train as:
• SprintDog Judges
• Lure Operators
Training more officials will help ensure the sport can continue to thrive and meet the growing demand.
The link to the Application form appears below. We strongly encourage interested members to submit an Application form to help support the future of SprintDog in Queensland.
If you have any questions or require further information, please contact the DQ office or email your completed forms to rob@dogsqueensland. org.au.

The breed possesses a unique combination of confidence, elegance, animation and attitude that sets it apart from every other member of the Toy Group.
Among the world’s toy breeds there are few dogs that possess the confidence, presence and unmistakable charisma of the Miniature Pinscher. Small in stature but enormous in personality, the breed has earned the enduring title of the “King of the Toys,” a nickname that reflects not only its elegance and spirited nature, but also the selfassurance with which it carries itself.
To the casual observer, the Miniature Pinscher may resemble a scaled-down Dobermann. In reality, nothing could be further from the truth.
The Miniature Pinscher is a distinct and much older breed, with roots extending deep into the history of Germany long before the development of the Dobermann in the late nineteenth century. Indeed, the Miniature Pinscher stands as one of Germany’s oldest native dog breeds and remains a living link to the early pinscher dogs that once worked throughout central Europe.
The story of the Miniature Pinscher begins with the small smooth-coated farm dogs of Germany. These dogs were valued for their ability to control rats and mice in stables, homes and workshops. While exact records from the earliest centuries are scarce, canine historians generally agree that the breed developed from a combination of the German Pinscher, small smooth Dachshunds and Italian Greyhounds.
During the nineteenth century, these little dogs became known as the “Reh Pinscher” (often written as Rehpinscher). The German word Reh refers to the roe deer, and the name arose because the sleek red dogs bore a striking resemblance to the small deer found in the forests of Germany. Their elegant outline, alert expression and graceful movement contributed to the comparison.
References to the Reh Pinscher become increasingly common from the 1860s onward. By approximately 1870, breeders in Germany were deliberately breeding these small red pinschers as a distinct type rather than simply selecting smaller examples from working farm stock. Dr. H.G. Reichenbach, one of the early authorities on the breed, later described the Reh Pinscher as a recognised purebred dog by this period.
Unlike many toy breeds that were developed primarily for companionship, the Reh Pinscher retained a practical purpose. It was an energetic vermin hunter with exceptional agility and courage. The combination of working ability and elegance would become a hallmark of the breed throughout its history.
The latter decades of the nineteenth century saw the rapid development of organised dog breeding throughout Europe. Germany was no exception.
Dog exhibitions began appearing in Germany during the 1860s, and by the early 1880s Reh Pinschers were being exhibited in significant numbers. Records indicate that Reh Pinschers were shown in Switzerland by 1882, while registrations of Miniature Pinschers were being maintained by German kennel authorities by 1883.
The broader Pinscher family was formally recognised in the German canine world during this period. In 1880, pinschers were recorded in the Deutsches Hundestammbuch (German Stud Book), one of the earliest organised canine registries in Germany. A formal breed standard for pinscher varieties followed shortly afterwards.

An important milestone occurred in 1895 with the establishment of the Pinscher Klub, later known as the Pinscher-Schnauzer Klub. The club brought together breeders of the smooth and rough-coated pinscher varieties and laid the foundations for systematic breeding programmes.
Among the earliest documented Miniature Pinschers were dogs carrying names that would become familiar in German pedigrees. Historical accounts mention influential breeders such as Josef Berta and notable dogs including Max v. Klein-Paris, whose intelligence and temperament were widely praised. Berta’s enthusiastic writings about his dog helped encourage interest in the breed among other fanciers.

was, and remains, a fitting description for a dog that never seems aware of its modest size.
The first Pinscher-Schnauzer stud books, published in the early twentieth century but containing registrations dating back to the 1880s, reveal that Miniature Pinschers already existed as a recognised and distinct variety. One early stud book contained eighty-three registered Miniature Pinschers, demonstrating that the breed was already firmly established by the turn of the century.
The title “King of the Toys” emerged during the breed's rapid rise in popularity in the years before the First World War.
While many toy breeds were bred primarily as decorative companions, the Miniature Pinscher projected an entirely different image. It was proud, fearless, athletic and independent. Its characteristic hackney-like gait, carried head, and alert posture gave the impression of a much larger dog trapped in a small body. Observers frequently remarked that the breed behaved as though it ruled every room it entered.
By the early twentieth century the nickname "King of the Toys" had become widely associated with the breed and remains in common use today. Rather than referring to royal ownership or aristocratic patronage, the title celebrated the breed's commanding personality and self-confidence. It
The period between 1900 and 1914 is often regarded as the first golden age of the Miniature Pinscher.
Speciality exhibitions attracted large entries, and breeding became increasingly organised. Historical records note a special Reh Pinscher show in Germany in 1900 featuring ninety-three exhibits. Black-and-rust dogs were common, although red specimens remained highly prized. Chocolate, blue and other colour variations were also seen during this period.
As industrialisation spread through Germany, the breed adapted easily from rural farms to urban homes. The Miniature Pinscher's compact size, cleanliness and lively nature made it an ideal companion for city dwellers while still retaining its traditional vermin-hunting instincts. By the eve of the First World War, the breed had become one of Germany's most fashionable companion dogs.
Like many European breeds, the Miniature Pinscher faced significant challenges during the two World Wars.
The First World War disrupted breeding programmes throughout Germany. Food shortages,
economic hardship and social upheaval reduced dog breeding across the continent. Nevertheless, dedicated breeders preserved the best bloodlines and maintained the breed through the difficult post-war years.
The inter-war period saw a recovery in numbers and renewed enthusiasm. During the 1920s and 1930s the breed spread beyond Germany, particularly into the United States and several European countries. American fanciers began importing dogs around 1919, and the breed steadily gained recognition overseas.
The Second World War again threatened the survival of many established bloodlines. Breeding virtually ceased in some regions, and numerous kennels disappeared entirely. Yet the Miniature Pinscher proved remarkably resilient. Following 1945, surviving breeders in Germany and abroad rebuilt the breed using the remaining quality stock. The careful preservation efforts undertaken during this period are largely responsible for the sound and recognisable breed we know today.
Following the Second World War, the Miniature Pinscher entered a new phase of international development.
The breed's popularity increased dramatically in North America during the 1950s and 1960s. Enthusiasts were drawn to its elegance, intelligence and spirited temperament. Recognition by major kennel clubs and the establishment of active breed clubs further accelerated its growth.
Today the Miniature Pinscher is found throughout Europe, North America, South America, Asia, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. Although fashions in dog breeds rise and fall, the Miniature Pinscher has retained a loyal following worldwide. Its appeal lies not only in its appearance but also in its unique character – a blend of confidence, devotion, curiosity and humour that few breeds can match.
The modern Miniature Pinscher remains remarkably true to its historical roots. Beneath the polished show-ring presentation lies the same alert little ratter that once patrolled German stables more than a century ago.
The history of the Miniature Pinscher in Australia is remarkably well documented for a breed that was relatively unknown in this country until the middle of the twentieth century. The establishment of the breed can be traced to a small number of dedicated fanciers whose imports and breeding programmes laid the foundation for virtually every Australian Miniature Pinscher seen today.
The generally accepted beginning of the breed in Australia dates to the late 1950s when Sydney dog fancier George Byron imported a pair of red Miniature Pinschers from England. The imported bitch, Brazen of Tavey, arrived in whelp and produced two bitch puppies shortly after her arrival. These dogs were of predominantly American bloodlines and represented the first significant foundation stock for the breed in Australia. Their arrival provided the breed with an immediate breeding base and marked the beginning of organised Miniature Pinscher breeding in the country.¹
Among those captivated by these early imports was Mrs Margaret Spira, whose enthusiasm for the breed would prove instrumental in its future development. Supported by her husband, the well-known Sydney veterinarian, dog judge and canine authority Dr Harry (Harold) Spira, Margaret acquired Tasso Little Red Eva and Tasso Simba from

George Byron. These dogs became the cornerstone of the newly established Pindom Kennels, one of the most influential Miniature Pinscher kennels in Australian history.¹
The contribution of Harry and Margaret Spira to the breed cannot be overstated. At a time when Miniature Pinschers were virtually unknown in Australia, the Spiras actively promoted the breed, imported additional stock and encouraged other exhibitors and breeders to become involved. Through both their breeding programme and their willingness to place quality dogs with respected exhibitors, they established bloodlines that spread rapidly throughout the emerging Australian population.¹ ⁴
One of the most significant beneficiaries of the Spiras’ efforts was the respected Victorian dog identity Frank Longmore and his wife Stella Longmore. The Longmores became involved with the breed through dogs obtained from the Spiras, most notably Pindom Lady Davina, whelped in August 1962. Successfully campaigned by the Longmores, Lady Davina produced Victoria’s first recorded litter of Miniature Pinschers in November 1964. Through this litter and the Longmores’ active promotion of the breed, Victoria became firmly established as an important centre for Miniature Pinscher development.⁵
The Longmores would remain influential figures in the breed for many years. Stella Longmore later became Patroness of the Miniature Pinscher Club of Victoria and a foundation member of the club, while Frank Longmore, already well known in Australian purebred dog circles as a judge and official photographer, helped raise the breed’s profile throughout the country.⁵
At much the same time, Miniature Pinschers were beginning to establish themselves in Queensland and other states as further imports arrived from both the United Kingdom and the United States. These imported dogs broadened the available gene pool and strengthened overall breed quality.¹
Among the most influential early kennels to emerge from the Pindom foundation stock was Minelphi Kennels, established by Phillip and Elaine Cross in 1961. The Cross family obtained their first Miniature Pinscher from Harry and Margaret Spira and quickly became one of Australia’s most successful and enduring breeders. The kennel was founded upon three important dogs: Australian Champion Pindom Lady Fiona, together with the United Kingdom imports Australian Champion Shumah Kiltie (Imp UK) and Australian Champion Shumah Perry (Imp UK).⁶
The importance of these dogs is difficult to overstate. From them came Champion Minelphi Calamaty Jane, a bitch whose influence extended through generations of Australian pedigrees. Even today, her name can be found deep within the ancestry of many successful Australian Miniature Pinschers. Over subsequent decades Minelphi produced more than fifty champions and became one of the defining kennel names in Australian Miniature Pinscher history.⁶
The development of organised breed activities followed naturally as numbers increased. Interest generated by breeders such as the Spiras, Longmores, Cross family and other early enthusiasts culminated in the formation of the Miniature Pinscher Club of Victoria in 1972. The club provided a focal point for breeders and exhibitors, encouraged education and helped preserve breed type at a time when the Miniature Pinscher was still establishing itself in Australia.⁵
By the early 1970s, the foundations of the Australian breed had been firmly laid. The combination of

the original Byron imports, the Pindom breeding programme, influential imported stock from Britain and America, and the emergence of successful kennels such as Minelphi created a population of Miniature Pinschers that was both genetically diverse and recognisably true to type.
The Miniature Pinscher possesses a unique combination of confidence, elegance, animation and attitude that sets it apart from every other member of the Toy Group. While the Miniature Pinscher is known for its characteristic Hackney gait, experienced breed specialists consistently caution that movement alone does not define a quality dog.
The ANKC Breed Standard describes a dog that is square, compact, smooth-coated, well-balanced and structurally sound. Above all, the breed should project fearless animation, complete self-possession and spirited presence. It must be remembered that a Miniature Pinscher is generally a “One Person Dog”, and do not like their space being invaded.

However, breed specialists repeatedly emphasise that type extends beyond individual features. A correct Miniature Pinscher should immediately convey confidence and authority. The dog should command attention without appearing exaggerated.
When evaluating the Miniature Pinscher, the first impression should be one of balance and authority. The dog should appear as a naturally athletic, elegant and self-assured individual. It is not a refined Italian Greyhound, nor a miniature Dobermann. It is distinctly a Miniature Pinscher.
The outline should be unmistakably square, with the length of body approximately equal to the height at the withers. The neck should be clean and slightly arched, flowing smoothly into well-laid shoulders. The topline should be level or exhibit a slight slope from withers to croup. The tail set is high and contributes significantly to the breed's proud carriage.
The head is an important component of type. It should be proportionate to the body, appearing narrow and tapering when viewed from the front. The skull is flat, the stop slight but definite, and the muzzle strong with adequate underjaw. The expression should be keen, alert and intelligent. Dark, bright eyes combined with an attentive expression contribute greatly to the breed's characteristic presence.
Perhaps the most overlooked aspect of judging the breed is temperament.
The ANKC Standard describes "fearless animation, complete self-possession and spirited presence." These words are critical. The Miniature Pinscher should never appear timid, hesitant or lacking confidence. It should enter the ring believing it owns it.
Breed authorities frequently note that many Min Pins are active, curious and constantly aware of their surroundings. They may not stand perfectly still for extended periods, nor should they be expected to. Their alertness and curiosity are part of their charm and breed character.
For many people, the Miniature Pinscher is recognised for its elegant outline, spirited personality and distinctive Hackney gait in the conformation ring. Yet ask anyone who lives with one and they will tell you there is much more to the

breed than appearance alone.
The Miniature Pinscher was developed as an active, intelligent and determined little dog. Those qualities that once made it an efficient hunter of vermin now make it an enthusiastic participant in a remarkable range of modern dog sports. Across Australia, Miniature Pinschers are proving that they can excel in activities that challenge the mind, engage natural instincts and strengthen the partnership between dog and owner.
Perhaps one of the greatest joys of dog sports is that success is measured not only by ribbons and titles, but by the relationship developed along the journey.
The Miniature Pinscher is often described as a “big dog in a small body.” It is curious, energetic and highly intelligent. Owners quickly discover that these dogs enjoy having a job to do. Without mental stimulation they can invent their own entertainment, often to the amusement – or frustration – of their families.
Dog sports provide a productive outlet for this intelligence. Training sessions encourage problemsolving, concentration and self-control while building confidence in both dog and handler. Regular training also develops communication
skills, teaching the dog to understand and respond to subtle cues while strengthening trust between dog and owner.
Few sports suit the Miniature Pinscher better than Scent Work.
A Miniature Pinscher possesses a keen nose and a natural desire to investigate its surroundings. Scent Work allows dogs to search for hidden odours in a controlled environment, rewarding them for using their natural abilities.
Many owners are surprised to discover how focused their lively Min Pin becomes when working scent. The sport encourages independent thinking while simultaneously strengthening teamwork. It is also one of the most accessible sports for people of all ages and physical abilities because success depends far more on the dog’s nose than the handler’s athletic ability.
For older owners or those with mobility limitations, Scent Work provides an inclusive way to enjoy meaningful competition and training with their dog.
If there is one sport perfectly suited to the Miniature Pinscher’s personality, it may be Trick Dog.

Min Pins love interaction and thrive on attention. Teaching tricks such as spins, retrieving objects, targeting, weaving through legs or more advanced routines channels their intelligence into fun and rewarding activities.
The sport encourages creativity and positive reinforcement training while building confidence in both dog and handler. Many owners find Trick Dog an ideal entry point into dog sports because it can begin at home and progress at the dog’s own pace.
Agility showcases the athleticism hidden inside the Miniature Pinscher’s compact frame.
Watching a Min Pin confidently negotiate jumps, tunnels and contact obstacles demonstrates just how capable the breed can be. Agility requires speed, coordination and responsiveness, but above all it requires teamwork.
The dog learns to trust its handler’s guidance while the handler learns to read and support the dog. The result is a partnership built on communication and mutual confidence.
Australian Miniature Pinschers are increasingly earning agility titles, demonstrating that the breed is capable of competing at a very high level.

Dogs bred by the Weronar kennel have achieved significant success in Agility competition, including state and national recognition.¹
Rally and Obedience reward precision, focus and teamwork.
The Miniature Pinscher’s intelligence and enthusiasm make it well suited to both disciplines when training remains positive and engaging. Rally is particularly attractive to newcomers because handlers are encouraged to communicate with and support their dogs throughout the course.
Dogs Australia describes Rally as a sport that promotes a positive relationship between dog and owner while providing an enjoyable introduction to competitive dog sports.²
For many handlers, Rally becomes the gateway to other activities, helping develop confidence before progressing to more advanced disciplines.
Although small, the Miniature Pinscher is remarkably athletic.
SprintDog allows dogs to run a timed 100-metre

course, either chasing a lure or running towards their owner. The sport focuses on individual achievement and personal improvement rather than direct competition against other dogs.³
Lure Coursing similarly taps into natural preydrive instincts, encouraging dogs to pursue a mechanically operated lure over an unpredictable course. While traditionally associated with Sighthounds, Dogs Australia provides opportunities for all breeds to participate.⁴
For many Miniature Pinschers, these sports are pure joy. The excitement of running flat-out across a field allows them to express their natural athleticism in a safe and controlled environment.
Tracking and Earthdog activities appeal directly to the breed’s historical roots.
The Miniature Pinscher’s ancestors were valued for locating and dispatching vermin in homes, farms and stables. Activities that encourage searching, problem-solving and persistence allow modern dogs to utilise these instincts constructively.
These sports reward determination rather than speed, often revealing talents that owners never realised their dogs possessed.
One of the greatest strengths of dog sports is that participation does not require championship ambitions.
Across Australia, clubs conduct training classes, social events and introductory activities that welcome newcomers. Whether attending a weekly Rally class, participating in a Scent Work workshop or simply trying a SprintDog event for the first time, owners become part of a supportive community of like-minded dog enthusiasts.
Many lifelong friendships begin beside a training ring or at a club training ground.
The physical and mental health benefits are equally significant. Regular activity encourages exercise, social interaction, routine and goal setting. For retirees, seniors and people living with disability, dog sports can provide meaningful social engagement and an opportunity to remain active within a welcoming community.
The true reward of dog sports is not the title suffix or the ribbon.
It is watching a Miniature Pinscher eagerly anticipate training night. It is seeing the excitement in their eyes when they solve a difficult scent problem, complete a Rally course, race towards the finish line or master a new trick.
Most of all, it is the partnership that develops along the way.
The Miniature Pinscher has always been a clever, energetic and determined little dog. Dog sports simply provide an opportunity for those qualities to flourish. Whether your goal is a national title or simply spending quality time with your dog, there has never been a better time to discover what your Miniature Pinscher is capable of achieving.

Internationally, brachycephalic breeds are under increasing scrutiny. In some countries, this has already resulted in breeding restrictions, court challenges, show limitations and, in some cases, breeding bans. These developments show how quickly welfare concerns can move from breeder education to external restriction, court action, show restrictions and breeding bans when breed organisations are not seen to be leading the conversation.
Key examples:
• Netherlands: introduced strict breeding criteria for short-muzzled dogs, including a craniofacial ratio requirement of more than 0.3cm, along with nostril, eye and breathing criteria.
• Norway: the Supreme Court upheld a ban on breeding Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, while the English Bulldog was not fully banned but remains under significant scrutiny.
• United Kingdom: The Royal Kennel Club recommends RFG testing before breeding, and Crufts now requires French Bulldogs, Bulldogs and Pugs to have RFG assessment before competing. Dogs graded 3 or untested are barred from the ring.
• Germany: “torture breeding” laws already exist, with increasing pressure to strengthen enforcement against breeding traits that cause suffering.
Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS) is a condition that affects a number of short-muzzled dog breeds and can significantly impact a dog’s ability to breathe comfortably. While many brachycephalic breeds are loved for their unique appearance and temperament, it is important that breeders and owners understand the potential respiratory challenges associated with these breeds and work proactively to improve health outcomes.
BOAS is caused by a combination of anatomical features that restrict airflow through the upper airway. Dogs affected by BOAS may experience
noisy breathing, snoring, exercise intolerance, gagging, overheating, disturbed sleep, or respiratory distress. In more severe cases, affected dogs may struggle to cope with normal daily activities or warm weather conditions.
Importantly, BOAS is not simply “normal for the breed.” Dogs should be able to breathe freely and comfortably, and responsible breeding practices play a key role in improving respiratory health across future generations.
The Royal Kennel Club’s Respiratory Function Grading (RFG) Scheme continues to expand as more breeds are identified as potentially at risk of BOAS. Dogs Australia recently released an updated list of breeds that may be assessed under the Respiratory Function Grading (RFG) Scheme, following advice provided by Dr Arthur House, Chief Assessor Australia for the RFG Scheme.
The currently recognised breeds include:
• Boston Terrier
• Chihuahua
• Shih Tzu

• Boxer
• Dogue de Bordeaux
• Staffordshire Bull Terrier
• British Bulldog
• French Bulldog
• Affenpinscher
• Japanese Chin
• Pekingese
• Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
• King Charles Spaniel
• Pomeranian
• Griffon Bruxellois
• Maltese
• Pug
The Respiratory Function Grading Scheme is an internationally recognised assessment program designed to evaluate the breathing function of dogs that may be at risk of BOAS. The Scheme is licensed to Dogs Australia through the Royal Kennel Club and is currently the only officially recognised respiratory grading program used within Australia for BOAS assessment.
The purpose of the Scheme is not to exclude breeds, but to provide breeders with a practical and evidence-based tool to help improve respiratory health through informed breeding decisions.
An RFG assessment is performed by an approved veterinary assessor and involves:
• A physical examination of the dog
• Obser vation of breathing at rest
• A controlled exercise test
• A ssessment of recovery following exercise
• Evaluation of respiratory noise, effort, and distress
Dogs are then assigned a respiratory grade from 0 to 3:
• Grade 0 – Clinically unaffected by BOAS
• Grade 1 – Mild signs but clinically functional
• Grade 2 – Moderate signs of BOAS
• Grade 3 – Severe signs of BOAS
Dogs graded 0 or 1 are generally considered suitable candidates for breeding, while Grades 2 and 3 indicate increasing levels of respiratory compromise and should be carefully considered in breeding programs.
Dogs Queensland believes it is far better for breeders and breed organisations to take a proactive, practical and evidence-based approach now. In the coming months, Dogs Queensland will be introducing a new BOAS Screening Risk Assessment Tool designed to support breeder education and awareness surrounding respiratory health indicators in brachycephalic breeds. This initiative has been developed with a strong welfare focus and

aims to support breeders in making informed, evidence-based breeding decisions while also demonstrating that our members are taking proactive steps to improve respiratory health outcomes within these breeds.
While some jurisdictions are moving toward mandatory RFG requirements for all breeding dogs prior to litter registration, Dogs Queensland’s approach is focused on education, participation, data collection, and encouraging gradual uptake in a practical and achievable way for breeders.
Prior to the official release of the BOAS Screening Risk Assessment Tool, Dogs Queensland will be hosting a webinar for Breeders to attend that will:
• Explain how the screening tool was developed and how it works
• Demonstrate how measurements are taken
• Discuss how results are interpreted
• Explain how the data will be used
• Answer breeder questions and gather feedback
Initially, the project will focus on:
• French Bulldogs
• British Bulldogs
• Pugs
We encourage all breeders of French Bulldogs, British Bulldogs and Pugs to participate. The stronger the breeder involvement, the stronger our ability to demonstrate that voluntary health screening, education and responsible breeding practices can deliver improved welfare outcomes without the need for compulsory testing requirements before litter registration.

Wisdom Panel is a veterinary genetics company founded in 2005, offering purpose-bred dog breeder testing since 2011. Wisdom Panel’s MyDogDNA testing uses modern Illumina microarray (“panel”) technology.
This method provides affordable testing for thousands of DNA markers, tailored to the needs of each breed, with a single DNA sample. The resulting reports include broadspectrum disorder screening, genetic diversity and physical trait testing, and internationally standardised DNA profiling for self-serve parentage testing.
Mapped dog genomes and microarray technology represent a step change in dog genetic research in the last 20 years, giving birth to the current era of “big data” and rapidly increasing the pace of discovery. In 2023, Wisdom Panel published the “1 million dog paper,” representing over 200,000 purebred dogs from 150 countries, as well as 800,000 mixed-breed dogs, surveying their genetic disorders and the clinical relevance of each disorder using linked medical records. The findings include:
Genetic disease isn’t rare. 57% of all dogs tested, whether purebred or mixed breed, carried at least one genetic disease risk variant. Not all dogs will go on to develop disease due to additional factors, but it’s valuable information in planning to reduce disease risk.
Some disorders are actually more common in mixed-breed dogs. However in purebreds, dogs with two copies of recessive mutations are often more common, because they come from a common gene pool.
Some disorders reliably produce disease regardless of breed background while others are more complex and may express differently depending on the dog’s ancestry, suggesting additional environmental or genetic factors.
Wisdom Panel launched a free, public website in 2018 called MyBreedData.com. On this site, breeders can view global breed diversity and disorder frequency statistics closer to real time from worldwide Wisdom Panel breeder testing, allowing breeders to participate in the research and surveillance process in their breed.
In common breeds it is often unclear how widespread a genetic disorder may be, and many breeds are rare enough that very little organized research has been done. With global data from MyBreedData, these discoveries power the recommendations and breed-specific findings highlighted in MyDogDNA.
The physical traits a dog displays do not necessarily indicate the sum total of what that dog carries in their genotype, leading to surprises in litters of puppies. By testing for more than 50 physical trait variants, breeders can detect their breeding dogs’ potential to produce desirable or undesirable traits in litters.
Many dog breeds have average COIs equivalent to the mating of full siblings if COI is calculated back to founders. Genetic diversity testing is the next generation in diversity management, with several benefits over the limitations of COI. Low genetic diversity is known to contribute to:
Shorter lifespan
Decreased litter sizes
Decreased fertility
Increased puppy mortality
Increased rate of genetic disease
MyDogDNA includes genetic diversity scores for all tested dogs, using markers spread across all chromosomes, and compared against averages for the breed when available, to provide valuable context for the breeder, regardless of COI depth or availability.
DNA profiling, also known as genetic ‘fingerprinting,’ is the foundation for reliable parentage testing to protect pedigree integrity. MyDogDNA uses the newest international standard panel, ISAG 2020 (SNP), to uniquely identify each dog tested. Breeders can then conduct self-serve parentage analysis and generate certificates, comparing profiles between puppies and candidate parents in their account. Parentage analysis confirms that a puppy’s DNA markers either are or are not consistent with those of its sire and dam. Profiling and parentage are increasingly required by registration bodies, but are also used optionally to confirm sires in dual-sire litters, for imported dogs, frequently used sires, and for frozen semen.

STR vs SNP testing-InfogeneNZ can do both types of testing for parentage analysis.
(STR has a faster turnaround of only 5-10 working days whereas SNP can take up to 4 weeks).
STR (Short Tandem Repeat) and SNP (Single Nucleotide Polymorphism) are two different types of DNA markers used in DNA testing, each with its own strengths and weaknesses.
STRs are short, repeating sequences of DNA that vary in length between individuals, making them useful for distinguishing between people, especially in forensic cases.
SNPs, on the other hand, are single-base variations in the DNA sequence and are more stable over generations, making them suitable for tracing ancestry and identifying specific lineages.
Here's a more detailed comparison:
STRs (SHORT TANDEM REPEATS):
• What they are:
STRs are repeating sequences of DNA, like a code with repeated patterns (e.g., AGCTAGCTAGCT). The number of repeats varies between individuals.
• How they are used:
• Forensic Science: STRs are commonly used in

criminal investigations to match DNA found at a crime scene to a suspect.
• Paternity Testing: STRs can be used to establish biological relationships between individuals.
• Ancestry Testing: While less common, STRs can provide some information about ancestry, but SNPs are generally preferred for this purpose.
• Advantages:
• High Variability: STRs are highly variable between individuals, making them good for distinguishing between people.
• Established Technology: STR analysis is a well-established and widely used technique in forensic and paternity testing.

• Disadvantages:
• Mutation Rate: STRs can change relatively frequently over generations, which can complicate tracing ancestry.
• Degraded DNA: STR analysis can be less reliable with degraded or low-quality DNA samples.
• What they are:
SNPs are single-base changes in the DNA sequence (e.g., changing an A to a G).
• How they are used:
• Ancestry Testing: SNPs are commonly used to trace ancestry and build family trees, especially for deep ancestry.
• Disease Prediction: SNPs can be associated with an increased risk of certain diseases.
• Forensic Science: SNPs can be useful in cases where DNA is degraded or when tracing specific lineages.
• Advantages:
• Stability: SNPs are very stable and don't change much over generations, making them reliable for ancestry tracing.
• High Throughput: SNPs can be analyzed using high-throughput methods, allowing for the analysis of many SNPs at once.
• Disadvantages:
• Lower Variability: SNPs are less variable than STRs, so they may not be as effective for distinguishing between closely related individuals.
• Degraded DNA: SNP analysis requires high quality DNA and can be less reliable with degraded or low-quality DNA samples.
• Cost: SNP testing can be more expensive than STR testing, especially for large-scale analysis.
IN SUMMARY:
STRs are generally preferred for forensic and paternity testing due to their high variability, while SNPs are more suitable for ancestry testing due to their stability and ability to be analysed in large numbers.

Dogs Queensland is calling for volunteers to come and work at the DQ Ekka stand.
You'll be promoting the organisation to the wider canine community by telling them about our wonderful dogs, the activities they can get involved in, what DQ can assist with, encouraging memberships and assisting them to downloading the DQ App to stay in contact with us. You will also help liaise with exhibitors in regards to bringing their dogs to the stand for the public to interact with.
There are two shifts available - 8am to 12.30pm and 12 noon to 5pm each day from Saturday 8 August 2026 through to Sunday 16 August 2026. Volunteers can also put their hand up for full day shifts.
Entry passes and a meal allowance will be provided and parking / train costs will be reimbursed, but volunteers must be committed to the DQ stand for the entirety of their shift.
If you would like to join us, email Rob Harrison rob@dogsqueensland.org. au with your availability no later than Monday 3 August 2026.

Ulla Greenwood
Chief Dog Steward, Brookfield Show
Well, it’s a wrap for the 2 very successful days of Advance Sponsored Dog Shows at the Brookfield Show Society on 23 and 24 May 2026 with Esk on the Friday. We were so blessed with perfect sunny days from the Wednesday before through to the Sunday. The rain started again early Monday morning. Somehow this weekend of shows was extra special.
I have been really touched by the appreciation and thanks from exhibitors about the shows. They loved the people flowing through and the atmosphere. I announced both days, explaining what was going on in the 3 rings. It's all about demystifying our conformation show process and talking about our wonderful breeds. It was great seeing members of the public sitting and watching for extended periods of time and also interacting with exhibitors and breeders on the grounds. Our agricultural shows, culminating in the Ekka, are a gilt edged opportunity to engage with the public and let them know all that is on offer in our wonderful dog world.
A big thanks to the exhibitors for their entries and their support of our objectives. We were very happy with an entry of over 300 each day, including sweepstakes. The Saturday show was in memory of Sam Robertson and how wonderful that the family was there with father Ian presenting the $500 BIS prize. The family have committed to sponsoring this BIS prize for the dog show on an ongoing basis for the next 10 to 20 years. The Brookfield community is so supportive of our Brookfield Show. It’s known as the biggest little country show in the city!
Our judges were great. Thanks to Mark Johnston, Dayna Johnston, Julie Keenan and Steve Yiannou for their professionalism and clear enjoyment of the event.
A big thank you to our Show Manager, Trevor Sully,
and the invaluable Andrew Ness, and our other stewards, Graham Kerr (and Brian), Lesley Roebig and Margaret Carr. And Joy Lanham was her usual effective support behind the scenes. They all did a great job. A big thank you also to Wayne Carter. who took on a caretaker role overnight on the Friday and Saturday nights.
A huge thank you to all on the Brookfield Show Society executive. The support from Rowena, Cath, Ros and Treasurer, Charles, was yet again outstanding. Advance is our fabulous major sponsor of both shows and do a wonderful job with their ambassadors on so many fronts. Thank you. And thanks to Kenmore Fresh and Delete for their much appreciated sponsorship.
Our excellent photographer was Julie Legg from Hoofprintz Photography.
These dog shows could not be run without the unfailing support of Andrew Greenwood and Harold Greensill.
On a final note, I will share lovely feedback from one kind exhibitor to me –
"Congratulations on your input and efforts involved in the running of the Canine section of the Brookfield Show. Your commentaries are absolutely fabulous, especially so for the public. It’s a shame you cannot go to all the country shows and do the same at all of them."
Perhaps we could get a panel of announcers organised for that very purpose.
All images appearing on pages 54 and 55 are courtesy of Andrew Greenwood, while images showcased on pages 56 through to 58 were provided by Julie Legg of Hoofprintz Photography. To view additional images or to make a purchase, please click on the link above.

The Cairns City Kennel Club recently held its first-ever Bale Seek event, attracting 24 enthusiastic dogs and their handlers from across the region, with competitors travelling from as far away as Cardwell to take part.
The event welcomed a wonderful mix of pedigree and rescue dogs, with participants ranging from just under six months of age to nearly thirteen years old. It was fantastic to see dogs of all ages, breeds, and experience levels enjoying the challenge of searching amongst the hay bales.
While many of our Scent Work members
attended, the event also attracted handlers from a variety of dog sports, along with several newcomers keen to give Bale Seek a try for the first time.
The positive atmosphere and enthusiastic participation made the day a great success, and we are grateful to the Cairns Show Association for their ongoing support and the use of their venue.
Following the success of this inaugural event, the CCKC is already planning its next Bale Seek event, which is expected to be held in late July 2026. We look forward to welcoming even more dogs and handlers to this exciting and inclusive canine sport.

On Sunday 7 June 2026 the Cairns City Kennel Club hosted our very first Dances With Dogs (DWD) competition, and what a success it was!
Not only was this a historic event for our club, but it was also just the second DWD competition ever held in Regional Queensland. We were thrilled to welcome competitors from across the region, including the Tablelands, to be part of the day.
One of the highlights of the day was the support from the public. We welcomed more spectators to this event than any other dog sport competition our club has hosted. The cheers, encouragement, smiles, and enthusiasm from ringside were wonderful to see and helped create a fantastic atmosphere throughout the night.
A special shout out goes to the teams who stepped into the DWD ring for the very first time. Trying something new takes courage, and we are incredibly proud of every one of you. You are helping shape the future of DWD at our club, and
we can't wait to watch your journey unfold.
We are also excited to celebrate a special achievement, with one of our members becoming one of the first at our club to earn both her Freestyle Starters Title and Heelwork to Music Starters Title (pending Dogs Queensland). Congratulations on this fantastic accomplishment!
Congratulations to every team who qualified and to every team who stepped into the ring and gave it a go. DWD is all about the partnership between handler and dog, having fun, and celebrating what can be achieved together. We think every team captured that spirit beautifully.
Thank you to our competitors, volunteers, judges, stewards, spectators, and supporters for helping make our inaugural Dances With Dogs competition such a memorable occasion.
Here's to the future of DWD at our club!

The Ingham Kennel and Obedience Club is proud to reach a remarkable milestone – our 90th Anniversary. The club was founded on 21st May 1936 under the name of the Herbert River Kennel Association and held its first dog show on Saturday 25th July 1936. For nine decades our club has supported the advancement of purebred dogs under the guidance and affiliation of Dogs Queensland. Please join us in celebrating this milestone between our 2 shows on Saturday 12 September 2026.

Dogs Queensland has become increasingly aware of Puppy Scam Websites using legitimate Dogs Queensland Registration and Queensland Breeder Identification (BIN) Numbers to sell puppies. Dogs Queensland Registration Numbers are obtained from legitimate websites such as Dogs Queensland or DogzOnline, where they are displayed as required by the Queensland Government.

Please see the Queensland Dog Breeder Fact Sheets for regulations and guidelines for Queensland Dog Breeders.
An example of a typical scam is:
• A Dogs Queensland Membership number is lifted from current advertising on the internet.
• The scammer researches and obtains personal details of the breeder including name, suburb, prefix.
• A domain name similar to the Kennel prefix is registered on an offshore registry.
• Once the breeder has ceased advertising the litter of puppies a new website is published.
• No physical address or phone numbers are advertised on the website.
• The seller avoids permitting you to physically see the cyber puppy and only sends non genuine pictures.
• The seller insists on only accepting payment by a crypto currency or a funds transfer.
As a breeder what can you do to avoid being an unknowing victim of a Puppy Scam:
• Regularly Google search the internet for websites using a similar Domain Name as your Prefix.
• Put a warning notification in your online advertising to alert buyers to check any website they are looking at is legitimate.
• Encourage puppy buyers to verify breeder information with Dogs Queensland and make direct inperson contact with you.
• Ensure puppy buyers check communications are made with verified contact details.
• Encourage puppy buyers to meet the puppy and breeder before handing over payments.
As a buyer what can you do to avoid being a victim of a Puppy Scam:
• Verify breeder information with Dogs Queensland.
• Ensure communications are made to verified contact details.
• Meet the puppy and breeder before handing over payments.
• If paying online, use a credit card or PayPal where you have a degree of buyer protection.
• Check website is an established site with a website security certificate.
• Avoid websites without physical address or phone numbers.
• A sk for proof, including ANKC registration papers and veterinary health records for any puppy.
Importantly you should report any suspect sites or advertising to the ACCC ScamWatch website. Please let us know about any suspect websites too by contacting Dogs Queensland on 3252 2661 or by email at info@dogsqueensland.org.au.
